Usually when a team changes head coaches, it means a stark adjustment for the program. For Manhattan men’s soccer, their new coach is actually a calming presence. Jorden Scott, who has been the Jaspers top assistant the last three seasons, took over his new role in December of 2012 and is prepared for his first campaign as head coach.

“I think this has allowed me to be more hands on with the team,” said Scott. “The biggest change in the program is the amount of time I’ve been able to give on a daily basis and the results in the spring showed that.”

After enduring a rough start in Riverdale, Scott has helped oversee a strong turnaround for the Jaspers including an appearance in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship game in 2011. Last season, the team finished with a 3-12-1 overall record and a 2-5 conference mark. This season, Manhattan looks to build upon their recent upward trend and continue to challenge for a league title.

“I want to stick to one plan, both as an attacking force and as a defensive force,” explained Scott. “I’m not saying it’s the only way, but it’s going to be the Jasper way. We are going to recruit players based on that way, bring in coaches who think that way and have our current players buy into that way.”

What ‘the Jasper way’ will look like has a lot to do with the way Manhattan plans to integrate new technologies into their planning and preparation. As most teams do, the Jaspers will put the best team out on the field each time, but that can be altered based upon matchups and game situations. It’s a new process that Scott feels will help his players better understand the style of play his staff is looking to implement.

“We’ve brought in several new methods of how to show the players what we are looking for from them using video and data analysis,” he says. “With that we are able to interpret the data, bring it back to the field, and work from there.”

COACHING STAFFJoining Scott on the sidelines will be a trio of coaches that

bring more than a decade of experience coaching in the New York City area. Gary Adair will be Manhattan’s top assistant in 2013 after spending two seasons as an assistant at Bloomfield College in New Jersey. A tireless worker, Adair earned much of his success at the club level leading the Jersey Crew Tornadoes Boys team to a national championship in 2011.

Dean O’Leary joins the Jaspers as a goalkeeping coach for the fall and will be charged with the task of helping Manhattan cement that position. In 2012 he was the head coach at The King’s College in New York after spending a couple seasons at Bergen Catholic High School in New Jersey. For three seasons, O’Leary was the Director of Goalkeeping at the Soccer Domain Academy in Montclair, N.J.

The fourth member of the coaching staff is Chris Weeks, who will serve as the Director of Soccer Operations. Weeks had a successful playing career at John Jay College where he became and assistant upon graduating. In 2009 he was awarded the

2013 PREVIEWhead coaching position, which he held for four seasons. His primary duties with the Jaspers will include travel organization, video analysis and preparing the teams training regiment.

GOALKEEPING

With the graduation of George Ellis, Manhattan’s last line of defense will be an intense, daily competition. Despite having former MAAC All-Rookie team member Christopher Lands as a senior, two other keepers will fight for considerable playing time.

Lands played in just four games last season and posted a 1-1 record with his lone win being a shutout. Sophomore Robert Maffei is ready to be in the mix after sitting out his freshman year to learn and adapt to the college game.

“Chris has been here long enough and Robbie had a year to learn,” says Scott. “Everything is still up for grabs and it will depend on who arrives ready and able to go.”

However, there is another arrival to the team in freshman Alex Coates McDowall. The 6’1” keeper from York, England is one of the Jaspers top recruits and could challenge for immediate playing time.

“Alex has been hand-picked for us and we hope he can come in and hit the ground running,” Scott notes. “Those guys will be going at it every day and that will benefit our program.”

DEFENSELast season, the Manhattan defense combined to hold

opponents to a 2.26 Goals Against Average. This year, a rotation of nine different players will look to improve upon that number and be a steady rock of the Jaspers back line.

A healthy Brandon Alvarado, who missed all of 2012, and freshman Andrew Melitsanopoulos are expected to be two of the anchors at central defense, helping to increase the pace of each game. Meanwhile, returning stars like Jake Scavetta, Sean Towey, Samuel Howard, Stefano Carlacci and Carlo Giachino will also work into the mix at fullback joining freshman Dean Habeeb.

“We will need all of them because the style we play makes us need players who can rotate in and push the speed of the game,” says Scott. “We think we have some depth and leadership at that position that will really help us this year.”

One player that Manhattan will be keeping a close eye on is senior Erick Montinard who suffered a severe leg injury in the spring and is determined to make it back onto the field.

“Everyone is so thrilled that he was able to survive and even walk again,” praised Scott. “There is no expectation for Erick. If he shows up and can play great for us. I wouldn’t put it past him but at the same time I don’t want to put pressure on him.”

MIDFIELDThe Jasper midfield will be led by senior co-captain Daniel

Festa, who has appeared in all but one game since arriving in Riverdale as a freshman. He will be at the center of a group who has spent the entire offseason improving their communication and endurance.

“The improvement made in the spring from a cardio and fitness point of view was huge,” says Scott. “I think we have so many options (at midfield) that it’s frightening.”

Joining Festa will be juniors Andrew Santos and Reese Akers along with sophomores Alex Shackley, Josh Binfield and Alex Recinos while Giachino will also work into the rotation. Last season, Shackley was second on the team in both goals (2) and points (5).

Others who look to compete for immediate playing time will be a group of five newcomers including sophomore Tylor Borgeson and four freshmen: Eli Bunton, Brian DeLaurentis, Timmy O’Driscoll, and Dominic Chavez.

“The key to the midfield for all of our players is to be truly flexible,” explains Scott. “They are all technically gifted and can play multiple positions. Our job as a coaching staff will be to find the best combination of the field based on our game plan and game situtations.”

FORWARDA trio of forwards for Manhattan will include two juniors

who have played their entire careers together and a incoming freshman with a high ceiling.

“The nice part about all our players coming in is they are all smart players,” noted Scott. “They know what they are walking into and they know how to fit into a system we play in.”

Co-captain Tommy Amos returns for his third season after leading the Jasper offense in 2012. As a sophomore he tallied a team high four goals and ten points. He will be joined up front by fellow junior Eugene Heerschap who finished second on the team with two goals, adding an assist as well.

“Eugene has been applying his trade as a winger/forward for the past two years and he’ll be the first to admit he wants to be the guy the team relies on to score,” admits Scott. “This is his time to step up and take on the mantra that he and the team want for him. Tommy was recruited here as a striker, we changed some of the ways we do things so we altered his game a little bit. He was unbelievable his freshman year and I truly think he has matured to be that everyday player we wanted him to be.”

Joining them up front will be highly touted recruit Daniel

Laguna Kennedy. A native of Madrid, Spain, he played much of his club career competing against some of the top talent in the country with Atletico Madrid. A heavy goal scorer, he will be relied upon as that for both the immediate and long-term future.

“Daniel is coming in with a bit of a target on his back,” Scott said. “We’re all expecting big things from him, but I think that he’ll enjoy playing with us because we have a style that fits how he played growing up.”

SCHEDULEThe 2013 slate consists of eight home matches, a top-25

team from a year ago, and an expanded conference schedule. Manhattan begins play on Sept. 2 as they travel to Army to kick off a three game road trip which includes Delaware (Sept. 6) and Syracuse (Sept. 9). The Orange finished last season as the #17 team in the country, reaching the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

After opening up their home schedule on Sept. 13 versus LIU-Brooklyn, the Jaspers will travel to Columbia (Sept. 18) before hosting back-to-back games at Gaelic Park against St. Francis (NY) on Sept. 22 and Fordham (Oct. 2). From there, a new and expanded MAAC schedule, which includes new opponents Monmouth and Quinnipiac, kicks in with a trip to Canisius on Oct. 5.

Manhattan’s first home conference game will be on Oct. 9 as Fairfield travels to Riverdale. The team then visits St. Peter’s (Oct. 16) and Rider (Oct. 19) in consecutive games before welcoming in Quinnipiac (Oct. 23) for their first meeting as conference rivals. Three of the team’s final five games will be at home with matches against Monmouth (Oct. 30), Marist (Nov. 2) and regining league champions Niagara (Nov. 9). Their two road contests in that span will be at both Siena (Oct. 26) and Iona (Nov. 6).

With the addition of two new schools, Manhattan will now play 10 conference matches. This also changes the scheduling to include a Wednesday-Saturday rotation as opposed to Friday-Sunday as in years past.

“I think the changes will affect every program,” Scott says. “From a Jaspers point of view, it’s nothing but positive. Having an extra day to analyze game footage, rehab and recover, and set up a game plan for the next opponent with make us that much better.”

Jorden Scott was named the eighth head coach in Manhattan men’s soccer history on Jan., 23, 2013 after spending three years as an assistant coach on the Jaspers staff. Scott brings over 10 years of coaching and playing experience to Riverdale.

Scott has served as the Academy Director at Sports Domain Academy in Montclair, N.J. for the past four years, and he has coached within the organization since 2003. In this role, he trains players 18 years and under across the tri-state region. During his tenure at Sports Domain Academy, several of Scott’s teams have earned state and national recognition. He coaches the Montclair Gauchos (U16 boys) who last season reached the U.S. Youth National Championships in Phoenix, after winning the New Jersey State Cup and capturing the Region 1 title with a dramatic 4-3 overtime win against Olney Maryland.

From 2004-2008, Scott worked as the Football for Life Program Director in Maun & Kasane, Botswana (Africa) training over 300 children ages 7 to 15 living in poverty.

In the United Kingdom, Scott was the head coach of the University of Glamorgan (1st Team) from 2001-03 which competed at an elite level within British University Sport. He also spent two years as the head coach of the men’s and women’s national teams at the University of Wales Athletic Union.

Scott played five years (1993-97) as a youth professional with Ayr United FC in Scotland. At the collegiate level, he was the team captain of the first team at University of Glamorgan and for Wales Universities.

Scott earned his bachelor’s degree in sports psychology from the University of Glamorgan in 2002. He is working toward a master’s degree in physical and special education at Montclair State University. Scott holds a UEFA B coaching license and a NSCAA Premier Diploma.

Gary Adair is in his first season as the assistant men’s soccer coach. His main duties include recruitment, team training and the annual camp schedule.

Adair comes to Riverdale after two years as the assistant coach at Bloomfield College. There he helped with the recruitment and year round training of athletes as the Deacons went 17-13-4 in his tenure. Prior to his time in Bloomfield, he was the head coach of two youth club teams in New Jersey for six seasons. He coached the Jersey Crew Tornadoes Boys team to a National Championship in 2011 while leading the Independence Girls Squad to #5 ranking in the state.

GARY ADAIRHis experience also goes to the high school level where he was the

varsity boy’s soccer coach at Madison High School in Madison, N.J. There he earned a 51-28-3 record in four years, including a Morris County Championship in 2009 and three separate “Coach of the Year” honors.

A native of England, Adair holds an NSCAA Premier Diploma and a USSF National ‘B’ License. He graduated from the University of Central Lancashire with a degree in Sports Science/Physiology.

Dean O’Leary is in his first season with Manhattan after extensive coaching experience in the New York City area. O’Leary will work primarily with the Manhattan goalkeepers after spending a year as the head coach of The King’s College in New York.

Prior to his time with King’s, he had a successful stint leading the boy’s soccer team at Bergen Catholic High School. A long time club coach, the majority of his success has come with the Match Fit Chelsea Football Club in Mercer County, N.J. There he led the squad to the semifinals of the Disney Showcase in both 2010 and 2011 before winning the tournament in 2012.

Leading the U17 & U18 teams with Match Fit, his teams also won

DEAN O’LEARYthe Jefferson Cup Showcase and PDA College Showcase in 2012 while reaching the semifinals of the Super Y League National tournament. From 2007 to 2010, O’Leary was the Director of Goalkeeping at the Soccer Domain Academy in Montclair, N.J. While his coaching career began in 2005, O’Leary spent five years as a professional and semi-pro player in his native England, playing at the highest level of semi-professional soccer in the country.

He also holds a UEFA ‘B’ License and an NSCAA National Goalkeeping Diploma. He graduated from Essex County College in 2010 with an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration.

Chris Weeks enters his first year with the Jaspers. Weeks will serve as the Director of Soccer Operations and is responsible for the day-to-day planning of the program including the organization of travel and field set-up.

Since 2009, he was the head coach at John Jay College earning 20 wins in that time. Weeks also coached eight student-athletes who received CUNYAC All-Star honors as well as five CUNYAC Scholar-Athletes that maintained a grade point average of 3.2 or higher.

CHRIS WEEKSPrior to being named the head coach at John Jay, he served as the

assistant for one year assisting in recruiting as well as the team’s strength and conditioning programs. A 2007 graduate of John Jay, he played four years of collegiate soccer and continues to play with the Irish Rovers in Hicksville, N.Y.

After a surprising run to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) championship game in 2011, head coach Ashley Hammond and the Manhattan men’s soccer team looked to prove it was not a fluke happening. Despite solid experience returning to the pitch, the Jaspers struggled to a 3-12-1 overall record, 2-5 in conference play.

The season began with a five match losing streak, including a trip to Spokane, Wash. to compete in the Gonzaga Nike Classic against the Bulldogs as well as Oregon State. That tournament began a stretch of nine straight games away from Gaelic Park for the Jaspers who played just four home matches all year.

Manhattan’s skid would come to an end on September 21 when they battled to a 1-1 draw at St. Francis (NY). Sophomore Eugene Heerschapp scored the lone goal for the Jaspers, tying things up in the second half, while senior George Ellis made seven saves in net. Their next two contests would be nail-biting losses as they couldn’t overcome a 2-0 road deficit to Bryant, before falling 1-0 in overtime at Fordham in the “Battle of the Bronx”.

The Jaspers did rebound after the losses, opening MAAC play with a 1-0 road win over Marist. Sophomore Reese Akers contributed the goal for Manhattan and looked to take some momentum into the rest of the conference slate. Unfortunately, it would not be so as the Jaspers dropped their next four games including a heartbreaking overtime loss at Iona.

Yet again, the team found a way to get back on the right track. A return to their home pitch saw Manhattan earn a key non-conference victory, defeating Army 1-0 on October 23. Daniel Festa provided the score on a penalty kick in the 61st minute while junior Christopher Lands posted seven saves in the shutout.

That confidence boost led to a second consecutive win three days later when the team traveled to MAAC opponent Rider. Freshman Alex Shackley had three points on the day, scoring a goal and assisting on another, while Ellis got his second shutout of the year in a 2-0 victory. Manhattan looked for a third straight win but was denied when they visited regular season champion Loyola.

Hurricane Sandy brought an abrupt end to the season, cancelling the final two games of the year and ending the careers of both Ellis and fellow senior CJ Dragovich. Throughout the year, Manhattan’s offense showed promise for the future as 10 of the 12 goals were scored by underclassmen. Tommy Amos led all players with 10 points, including four goals.

In the classroom, seven different Jaspers were awarded for their academic success. Akers, Festa, Heershapp, Ellis, Sam Howard, Jake Scavetta and Stefano Carlacci were all named to the MAAC All-Academic Team with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20.

Following the season, Manhattan announced that Coach Hammond would be stepping away from the program and assistant Jorden Scott would take over beginning in 2013.
