SEASON OUTLOOK

The Manhattan women’s soccer team enters the 2011 campaign prepared to vie for the MAAC title with a balanced roster consisting of a variety of experience. Under the direction of second year head coach Brendan Lawler, the Jaspers look to build on a transition season behind new leadership last year. Manhattan finished strong in 2010 playing its best soccer of the year down the stretch by picking up three of its five wins in the last three weeks of the season, despite being challenged with an injury plagued roster.

With one year under their belt in a new system, Lawler believes this group can position itself in the top of the conference to have a shot for the championship come November.

“We fully expected our players to enter preseason more fit and ready to play than ever before,” Lawler explained. “With their heightened fitness levels and tactical awareness of our system, it allowed us to hit the ground running this season, instead of starting with a blank slate like last year. If we can find some luck in the injury department and a renewed focus from everybody working hard for each other, we fully expect to challenge for a top-four spot in the MAAC.”

Manhattan returns a blend of skilled players at each position, along with a crop of talented newcomers. The Jaspers bring back eight starters, including senior captain Devon Lutz who is the only returnee to start in all 19 games last season. Lutz and fellow captains Marissa Greco and Nicole Landes are expected to bring leadership to a roster that welcomes eight new faces to the program.

FORWARDManhattan still has several weapons up

front, despite the graduation of Caroline Morse who was one of the top offensive threats to come through the program finishing her career with 57 points. Lutz will help offset the loss with her transition to the forward position, after starting 50 of her 56 career appearances in the back. Lutz has a wonderful attacking presence, which she put on display over several occasions throughout her career compiling six points from the defensive end.

Upperclassmen Tara Gleason and Kayla Howden, along with sophomore Martine Diamond are also expected to be significant contributors to the Jaspers’ offensive attack. Gleason appeared in all 19 games last season and ranked second on the team firing 31 shots. She brings phenomenal speed and energy to the attack.

Howden enters her junior campaign with significant experience under her belt playing in 36 games over her first two seasons at Manhattan. Howden adds a dangerous dimension to the front line with her unique combination of speed, strength and balance, along with a knack for finding the net. Diamond made a splash during her rookie campaign as she displayed her ability to create off the dribble and make tremendous runs. In 12 games as a freshman, Diamond finished third on the team in points, including a game winning goal and assisting a game winner.

The Jaspers add even more depth on the offensive end with sophomore Janie Schlauder transitioning to the front line, along with the addition of sophomore transfer Lexi Kearns. Schlauder appeared in 18 games as a freshman. She is a savvy player with good technique who can break down defenses well off the dribble. Kearns is a Warwick, N.Y. native who played in nine matches for Western Carolina last year. She gives Manhattan even more speed in the attack and strikes the ball well.

“When we play in high pressure this group will be able to win the ball quickly and create a lot of scoring opportunities for us,” explained Lawler.

MIDFIELDManhattan brings back an experienced

midfield, which will be anchored in the center by Greco, Landes and sophomore Brittany Egan. All three players are healthy and looking to rebound from injuries after being sidelined for the majority of the 2010 season.

“Marissa, Nicole and Brittany have the ability to help our team be more dangerous in attack and solidify us defensively,” explained Lawler.

Greco remains one of the Jaspers most consistent players at both ends of the field. The Long Valley, N.J. native has appeared in 37 games and posted four points over her career at Manhattan. Her 2010 campaign was cut short when she went down in the second match of the year, after she assisted the game winning goal in the Jaspers’ season opening win at Gaelic Park.

Landes saw action in four games in 2011 following a promising freshman campaign, before catching the injury bug. When healthy, she is a physical player with good speed who works hard on both sides of the ball. Egan has returned to form after experiencing an abbreviated 2010 season. She brings stability to the middle with her high soccer IQ that she has displayed at both ends of the field over her 29 career appearances.

Manhattan welcomes two newcomers in freshman Kiersten McGarty, who is expected to contribute to the offensive production out of the center, as well as transfer Jordan Luithle who has a quick technical ability and can provide a physical presence in the middle. McGarty comes to Manhattan from Monroe, N.Y. where she was selected a Times-Herald Record All-Star as a senior at Monroe-Woodbury High School. Luithle is a 5’11” junior who brings Division I experience to the unit after playing in 19 games during two years at Towson, including 15 last season.

The Jaspers return a great deal of experience, pace and ball striking ability out wide with senior Megan Lavecchia and junior Allison Pfeiffer. Lavecchia is coming off the top offensive season of her career, finishing second on the team with two goals and two points. Lavecchia brings an amazing work rate to the midfield and she uses her energy to pressure opposing defenses into mistakes. Pfeiffer has 35 games of experience after her first two years with the program. She excels in creating scoring chances in the attacking third and is another weapon for the Jaspers up front. Pfeiffer scored the second game winning goal of her career last season lifting Manhattan to a season opening victory over Fairleigh Dickinson.

DEVON LUTZ


SEASON OUTLOOKJunior Sara Jones and sophomore Alex

Iovine stepped up in the spring according to Lawler, as he expects them to be a great help in the wide positions. Jones, Iovine and freshman Shannon Garrity provide the Jaspers great depth on the outside due to their great deal of fitness which is a necessity in this role.

Playing primarily out of the back in 2010, Jones started 12 of 17 appearances and contributed to all four of the Jaspers’ shutouts. Jones is a tough defender with an offensive mindset who likes to get involved in the attack. Iovine is the most experienced of the last year’s freshman class as she was the only rookie to appear in all 19 games. Iovine is a versatile player who started in 12 matches and recorded an assist in the Jaspers’ victory at Iona. Garrity comes to Riverdale from Massapequa High School where she helped guide the program to a 19-0-1 overall record and the 2010 New York State Class AA Championship. Garrity offers a great work ethic and understanding how to defend and attack from any wide position.

BACKManhattan will rely on senior Claire

Reinhard to continue anchoring the back line, especially with the graduation of two-time team captain Kara Bucci. Reinhard brings an excellent technical presence to the field, while also possessing good composure and an ability to control the tempo. In 2010, Reinhard received the starting nod in all 17 appearances and she dished out a team-high two assists.

Shannon Barry and Keara Hunt made long strides in adapting to the collegiate game during the spring and should bolster the Jaspers’ defense. The sophomore tandem joins Reinhard for a backline that will be difficult to score against. Barry is a versatile player who has a good understanding of the game. She appeared in five games last season, after enjoying a successful career at Arlington High School, where she was a two-time All-Section honoree. Hunt played in 16 games for the Jaspers in 2010. She brings a phenomenal work rate to the field.

Freshman back Rachel Tomashosky is expected to have an immediate impact on the Jaspers’ defense. Tomashosky comes to Manhattan after a very successful career at John Jay High School where she helped the program win back-to-back New York State Class AA Championships (2008 & 2009). She adds terrific individual defending skills and a tactical understanding to the defense.

Freshmen Emily Teepe and Elisa Cullaro will add depth to the Jaspers backline. Teepe is a hard-nosed defender with a high soccer IQ. She was a four year starter at Northport

High School who earned All-Conference honors and was named the team’s Most Valuable Player as a senior. Cullaro, a native of New City, N.Y., started all four years at Clarkstown South High School.

“In our final six conference games last year we did not give up more than one goal per match,” explained Lawler. “We have no doubt our back line will allow us to improve on that stat in 2011.”

Sanzari possesses tremendous athleticism and has terrific hands. She offers a precise outlet throw that can spark counterattacks.

SCHEDULEManhattan is scheduled for a competitive

18-game regular season in 2011. The Jaspers will host seven contests at Gaelic Park, including Manhattan's home opener with cross-Bronx rival Fordham on Sept. 9.

Manhattan's lineup also consists of opponents from the Patriot League, Ivy League, America East and Northeast Conference, in addition to the always challenging Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference slate. The 2011 MAAC Women's Soccer Championships will be held Nov. 4 & 6 at Loyola University in Baltimore, Md.

Manhattan opens the regular season with a two-game road series, which begins at Atlantic 10 member Rhode Island on Aug. 26. One week later, the Jaspers will face off with Bryant (Sept. 2).

Manhattan will play four of its next five games in Riverdale, beginning with its highly anticipated Friday night contest with cross-town rival Fordham (Sept. 9). After visiting Fairleigh Dickinson on Sept. 11, the Jaspers return to Gaelic Park for three straight non-conference matches, starting with Sacred Heart on Sept. 16, which is the second game of a doubleheader with the Manhattan men's team. The Jaspers travel to Staten Island to face Wagner on Sept. 18, and then return home for Albany on Sept. 21.

The Jaspers will travel to Lafayette on Sept. 25, before opening the league schedule on their home turf hosting Canisius (Sept. 30) and Niagara (Oct. 2) at Gaelic Park. Manhattan will play two road contests the following weekend at defending MAAC Champion Siena (Oct. 7) and Marist (Oct. 9).

Manhattan returns to Riverdale on Oct. 14 to meet Fairfield, and will then play its final home game on Oct. 16 against Iona. The Jaspers finish out their last four games on the road when they visit Saint Peter's (Oct. 21), Columbia (Oct. 24), Loyola (Oct. 28) and Rider (Oct. 30).

For the second straight year, Loyola will play host to the 2011 MAAC Women's Soccer Championships (Nov. 4 & 6). The top four teams in the conference will qualify for the tournament. The league champion will receive an automatic bid to the 2011 NCAA Tournament.

GOALKEEPERJunior goalkeeper Kara Davis followed up

her 2009 MAAC All-Rookie campaign with a superb performance in her second year with the program. Maria Sanzari, a 5’9” product of North Haven, Conn., will serve as the back up for Davis in 2011.

“Kara is one of the most solid goalkeepers in the conference,” explained Lawler. “The coaching staff and her teammates have all the faith in the world that Kara will make all the saves she should, plus make the great saves that will turn losses into ties and ties into wins. Kara has the physical and technical ability to be the difference for us this year.”

Davis started 15 of 16 appearances in 2010, finished third in the MAAC with 96 saves and fourth with an .828 save percentage. She posted three shutouts, increasing her career total to eight, and she received credit for all five victories. In nine MAAC matches, Davis led the league with

Brendan Lawler enters his second season as head women’s soccer coach at Manhattan College. After just one year at the helm, Lawler has rejuvenated the Lady Jaspers program through strong local recruiting in the tri-state area. Lawler guided Manhattan to five wins during his collegiate head coaching debut in 2010 with a youthful roster that showed much promise for the future.

Lawler brings eight years of coaching experience to the turf, including previous collegiate coaching stints at the United States Military Academy and Marist College. A graduate of Saint Peter’s College, Lawler was a goalkeeper for the Peacocks’ men’s soccer program.

Lawler came to Riverdale from Marist College where he served as an assistant for the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 seasons under head coach Elizabeth Roper. The Newburgh, N.Y., native was responsible for assisting with the coordination of training sessions, recruiting student-athletes and scouting opponents. During his time with the Red Foxes, Lawler mentored a goalkeeping unit which recorded eight shutouts and he helped develop four All-MAAC Rookie Team selections in his two seasons. Lawler also worked with the Marist men’s soccer team’s goalkeepers in 2009.

In three years at West Point working with former men’s head coach Kurt Swanbeck, Lawler primarily trained the goalkeepers and defensive unit from 2006-2009. In 2007, the Black Knights posted their highest win total in over 10 years.

BRENDAN LAWLER

Lawler has been a member of the goalkeeping coaching staff for the United States Soccer Federation Region I Olympic Development Program since 2007. Working within the Town of Wallkill Soccer Club in Middletown, N.Y. for five years, Lawler was the head coach of the girl’s under-18 Red Devils premier team. Since 2005, Lawler also served as a girls Olympic Development Program head coach within Eastern New York Youth Soccer.

At the high school level, Lawler was the head girls varsity coach at Pine Bush from 2003-2005. In 2005, he led the program to the school’s first-ever Section IX Championship.

Lawler played Division I soccer and graduated cum laude from Saint Peter’s College earning a bachelor’s of arts in political science with minors in secondary education and history in 2002. Lawler was a teacher at Pine Bush High School for four years before pursuing a master’s degree in political science.

Lawler holds a United States Soccer Federation A License and a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) advanced national goalkeeping diploma with distinguished pass. He currently serves as an instructor for the NSCAA Goalkeeping Academy.

ALICIA TIRELLI Alicia Tirelli enters her second season as assistant women’s soccer coach at

Manhattan College. Tirelli’s duties include player skill development, recruiting and scouting.

Tirelli was a standout forward at Florida Atlantic University and went on to play the last five years at the professional level within the USL W-League. She also brings several years of collegiate, high school and club coaching experience to the Lady Jaspers soccer program.

Tirelli spent the 2008 season as a Division I assistant coach at her alma mater where she helped Florida Atlantic advance to the Sun Belt Conference semifinals. During her one-year term with the Owls, Tirelli mentored three players who received All-Sun Belt honors, and 14 of her student-athletes were named to the Dean’s List.

Prior to Florida Atlantic, Tirelli coached within the club level working for Quickstrike FC recreational and premier teams in New Windsor, N.Y. In 2006,

she served as the head coach of the junior varsity team at Coral Springs High School in Florida before spending two years as an assistant club coach in Boca Raton, Fla., for Team Boca’s U14-U15 premier teams.

Tirelli received All-Conference accolades in each of her four years as a student-athlete at Florida Atlantic. A two-time team captain, Tirelli was named First Team All-Sun Belt and Sun Belt All-Tournament Team her junior year, after leading the Owls in goals and helping the team advance to the conference semifinals. Tirelli repeated as a First Team All-Sun Belt selection as a senior and finished her career with 66 points on 27 goals and 12 assists.

The Tampa, Fla. native currently plays professionally for the New Jersey Valkyries, following a two year stint with the Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues of the USL W-League. She started her career in the W-League playing two seasons with the Cocoa Expos (2006-2007) and played the following year with the Tampa Bay Hellenic (2008).

AARON ANDERSON-WINCHELLAaron Anderson-Winchell returns for his second

season as an assistant coach for the Manhattan women’s soccer team.

The native of Bloomingburg, N.Y., brings over 10 years of club and high school coaching experience to

Riverdale, including his most recent position coaching within the Red Bull New York youth program. Anderson-Winchell also has coaching experience with Quickstrike FC and serving as an assistant coach for the Quickstrike Lady Blues of the Pro-Am W-League. Additionally, he spent seven years coaching the Town of Wallkill Soccer Club and coached Pine Bush High School for three seasons.

Anderson-Winchell played two years at the University of Rhode Island where he helped the Rams win consecutive Atlantic 10 championships and NCAA College Cup berths. He completed his collegiate career at the State University of New York at Cortlandt leading the Red Dragons to back-to-back SUNYAC titles. As a senior, he received All-SUNYAC and All-Regional All-America honors.

Anderson-Winchell was also a member of two Section IX championship teams at Pine Bush High School. He is a Certified Personal Trainer and Performance Enhancement Specialist through the National Academy of Sports Medicine. Anderson-Winchell holds a USSF “B” coaching license.

With 10 institutions strongly bound by the sound principles of quality and integrity in academics and excellence in athletics, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference is in its 31st year of competition during the 2011-2012 academic year.

The MAAC was founded in 1980 by six charter members: the U.S. Military Academy, Fairfield University, Fordham University, Iona College, Manhattan College and Saint Peter’s College. Competition followed one year later in the fall of 1981 with members competing in the sports of men’s cross country and men’s soccer. On January 2, 1982, Army traveled to Iona for the first MAAC men’s basketball game and the MAAC story had begun.

Today, Conference members include: Canisius College, Fairfield University, Iona College, Loyola University Maryland, Manhattan College, Marist College, Niagara University, Rider University, Saint Peter’s College, and Siena College. In addition, associate members include the University of Detroit Mercy, Jacksonville University and Virginia Military Institute in men’s lacrosse. St. Francis (N.Y.) College, Villanova University, VMI and Wagner College are all associate members of the MAAC Women’s Water Polo League. Drake University, Robert Morris University and Sacred Heart University compete in women’s rowing, while the University at Albany, Boston University and the University of Hartford began competition in women’s golf in the spring of 2010. The MAAC will support 24 sports and championships during the 2011-2012 academic year.

The MAAC Basketball Championships move to Springfield’s MassMutual Center to host the 2012-2014 championships. By having an excellent working relationship with various facilities, the MAAC has been able to attract a number of NCAA Championship events. Most recently, the MAAC and Rider co-hosted the 2011 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. The MAAC, Canisius College and Niagara University successfully hosted the 2010 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship First and Second Rounds at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo, New York. All three parties hosted the event in 2004 and 2007. The MAAC and Rider University co-hosted the 2009 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship Regional at the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, N.J., after recording the third highest attendance figure for the women’s championship with the First and Second Rounds in 2006. The MAAC and Rider will work together to co-host the 2012 NCAA Rowing Championships at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, New Jersey.

MAAC ASSOCIATE SPORTSIn June of 1995, the MAAC continued to develop opportunities for student-

athletes as the conference announced the formation of the MAAC Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse Leagues. The men’s league began competition in the spring of 1996, while the women’s league commenced in the spring of 1997. The men’s league consists of four MAAC schools -- Canisius, Manhattan, Marist, and Siena – and three associate members – Detroit, Jacksonville and Virginia Military Institute. The women’s league consists of MAAC institutions Canisius, Fairfield, Iona, Manhattan, Marist, Niagara and Siena.

In 2002, the MAAC added the MAAC Women’s Water Polo League. The league is currently made up of three MAAC schools – Iona, Marist and Siena – as well as four associate members, St. Francis (N.Y.), Villanova, VMI and Wagner.

Sacred Heart started participating in MAAC Women’s Rowing in the spring of 2008. Drake University joined the league for the 2010 MAAC Championship, while Robert Morris began competition in the spring of 2011.

In the summer of 2009, the MAAC added three associate members – Albany, Boston University and Hartford – to women’s golf, with the programs starting competition against MAAC members Fairfield, Niagara and Siena in 2009-2010.

ACADEMICS AND ATHLETICS

The MAAC prides itself on the accomplishments of its student-athletes in the classroom, as well as on the field. Mary Beth Riley, a 1991 graduate of Canisius, was the first recipient of the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. In the fall of 1998, Erin Whalen, a member of the Iona women’s rowing team, was awarded one of the nation’s 32 Rhodes Scholarships for academic achievement and civic leadership. Jose Vargas, a Loyola student, was also awarded a Rhodes Scholarship in 1999.

First-class facilities are the rule with MAAC schools, as teams regularly play in top-notch arenas,

such as Madison Square Garden, the IZOD Center, HSBC Arena, Times Union Center, the Arena at Harbor Yard and the Sun National Bank Center. The other MAAC championships boast their share of outstanding locales as well, such as the Reverend Harold Ridley, S.J., Athletic Complex at Loyola, where the women’s soccer championship will be contested in the fall of 2011, and Joe Bruno Stadium in Troy, New York, home of the 2012 MAAC Baseball Championship. This year, the MAAC will take its men’s championship to Orlando, Florida, where it will conduct its post-season event at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The MAAC Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships will be held at Disney’s Magnolia Golf Course.

In the past several years, a number of the MAAC schools have also enjoyed success in NCAA Championships. MAAC schools have made a total of 77 NIT appearances and 47 NCAA appearances. In addition, Iona and Rider participated in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament, with the Gaels advancing to the championship game. The Manhattan women participated in the Women’s Basketball Invitational, reaching the semifinal round of the tournament. The MAAC currently possesses 13 automatic bids to NCAA Championships in men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s lacrosse, and women’s water polo. In 2007, the Marist women’s basketball team advanced to the Sweet 16 before falling to the eventual National Champion, the University of Tennessee. In the fall of 2009, the No. 11 Iona men’s cross country team finished tied for eighth place at the NCAA Championship race, extended the Gaels’ streak to eight straight Top 10 national finishes. Iona softball, Manhattan track, Manhattan baseball and Loyola lacrosse have also flourished on the national stage.

The MAAC has also been a leader in the forefront of technology, expanding the notoriety of the league into cyberspace. In 2007, the league reached an agreement with JumpTV, Inc., now NeuLion, Inc., to design the MAAC web page. MAACSports.com has been a great success, providing fans with up-to-date contest results, live and on-demand video and an online merchandise store. The MAAC, in conjunction with NeuLion, launched an iPhone app in February 2011. The league is looking to expand its offerings with Android and iPod apps, scheduled for release during the 2011-12 academic year.

The MAAC President for the 2011-2012 academic year is Rev. Jeffrey von Arx, S.J., the President of Fairfield University. The Vice-President is Dr. Eugene J. Cornacchia, Ph.D., the President of Saint Peter’s College. Jim Paquette, Director of Athletics at Loyola University Maryland, will chair the Committee on Athletic Administration, and Theresa Berg, Associate Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator at Niagara University will serve as Vice Chair.

Dr. Brennan O’Donnell is the 19th president of Manhat-tan College, having assumed the responsibilities of the position July 1, 2009.

Dr. O’Donnell comes to Manhattan from Fordham Col-lege at Rose Hill, Fordham University’s oldest and larg-est school. As dean of Fordham College, he was the chief academic officer of a College of Arts and Sciences enrolling about 3,200 students under a faculty of more than 200.

Before coming to New York, Dr. O’Donnell spent 17 years at Loyola College in Maryland (now Loyola University Mary-land), where he served as a professor of English and, from 1999-2004, as director of the university-wide Honors Pro-gram. An active scholar, his teaching and research interests focus mainly upon poetry, especially of the British Romantic period, and on religion and literature, particularly contem-porary American Catholic writers. He has authored two books on the poetry of William Wordsworth and co-edited The Work of Andre Dubus, a collection of essays published as a double issue of Religion and the Arts. In addition, Dr. O’Donnell has published articles, essays and reviews in some of the leading journals in his field. At Manhattan, he will continue to hold a faculty appointment, as he had at Fordham and Loyola, as professor of English.

As the first president of the College not to be a member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, Dr. O’Donnell is treading new ground at Manhattan College. He has experi-ence in such transitions, however, as he was also the first layperson to serve as dean of Fordham College at Rose Hill.

His publications and lectures demonstrate a keen engage-ment in issues of faith and education, specifically Catholic higher education. From 1994–2000, he served as editor of the national magazine Conversations on Jesuit Higher Education, and he was a member of the National Seminar on Jesuit Higher Education from 1993–2000. In addition, he has served as a board member for the Lilly Fellows Program and for Collegium, a consortium of Catholic universities that strives to strengthen faculty understanding of and participa-tion in the mission of Catholic higher education.

A native of Pennsylvania’s Wyoming Valley, Dr. O’Donnell earned his B.A. with highest distinction and Honors in English at The Pennsylvania State University in 1981, where he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He earned an M.A. and a Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in English and American Literature and Language. He is the recipient of numerous fellowships, grants, awards and honors.

Dr. O’Donnell is married to Angela O’Donnell (formerly Alaimo), a poet and writer who teaches at Fordham, where she serves as associate director of the Francis and Ann Cur-ran Center for American Catholic Studies. The couple has three sons: Charles (a graduate of Saint John’s University, Minnesota, and a teacher in the St. Paul, Minnesota, public schools), Patrick (a 2009 graduate of Columbia Univer-sity, currently pursuing graduate studies in philosophy in Leuven, Belgium), and Will (a senior English major at Fordham).


A 1968 graduate of Manhattan College, Byrnes en-ters his 24th year as director of athletics.

Since his arrival back to Riverdale in May of 1988, Byrnes has presided over a renaissance period in Manhattan College athletics. During his tenure, the men’s and women’s basketball programs have earned eight NCAA Tournament bids (four women, four men). Additionally, the Jaspers have appeared in five postseason and preseason National Invitational Tournaments (NIT). Women’s soccer and men’s and women’s lacrosse began competition at the Division I level under Byrnes, and 14 different teams have won conference championships-men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor track, men’s and women’s outdoor track, men’s and women’s basket-ball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, volleyball, men’s tennis, softball and baseball. In addition, to date, 26 student-athletes have received All-America honors for both athletic and academic achievements.

Before returning to Manhattan, Byrnes spent 13 years with the Morrison-Knudsen Company, one of the largest engineering and construction firms in the nation.

A native of Garrison, New York, Byrnes earned his undergraduate degree in physical education with a minor in biology. He also holds an M.B.A. from City University in Seattle, Washington.

As an undergraduate, Byrnes was a member of the Jaspers’ club football team. Byrnes served as team captain and played both defensive tackle and offensive

end. He spent one season as an assistant coach and helped guide Manhattan to a 6-2 overall record in 1969.

Upon graduation, Byrnes began a teaching and coaching career at Queen of Peace High School in North Arlington, New Jersey. He also served as the school’s director of athletics from 1970-73. Under his leadership, Queen of Peace registered state tourna-ment appearances in baseball and basketball, while also capturing the Parochial “B” State Championship in football (1972).

In addition to his responsibilities at Manhattan, By-rnes served two stints (1997-99, 2004-06) as president of the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Basketball Associa-tion, at one time the sponsoring body of the NIT. He also served on the NCAA Championship Committee in 1999-2000. He is currently the chair of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Men’s Basketball Committee and the Committee on Athletic Admin-istration, as well as a member of the ECAC Officials Negotiating Committee. In recognition of his years of outstanding contributions to Jasper athletics, Byrnes was inducted into the Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004.

Byrnes resides in Croton-on-Hudson, New York, along with his wife, Rosemary. He is the father of five children: Bob, Carolyn (Manhattan ’97), Brian (Man-hattan ’99), Darren and Brigid.

Doug Straley was promoted to Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine in August 2009, after serving as Manhattan's Director of Sports Medicine for the previous six years. Straley supervises the athletic training of the 300+ student-athletes who compete for Manhattan’s 19 Division I athletic teams.

Prior to his arrival in Riverdale, Straley served as the director of sports medicine at Manhattanville College in nearby Purchase, NY. At Manhattanville, he coordinated the rehabilitation, prevention, and management of athletic injuries for over 250 intercollegiate NCAA Division III student-athletes.

Before his tenure at Manhattanville, Straley worked for three years as the assistant director of sports medicine at Assumption College. He assisted with the medical care of the athletic program’s 19 Division II varsity sport teams.

Straley, a 1998 graduate of Northeastern University, worked as a student athletic trainer during his undergraduate years. In 1999, he received a master of science degree in athletic training from University of

Tennessee at Chattanooga. Additionally, Straley served as the head athletic

trainer for the Westchester Wildfire, a United States Basketball League (USBL) team coached by former New York Knick John Starks.

Straley had been published on numerous occasions, and has made several presentations based upon his research in the field of Athletic Training.

Straley holds Athletic Training licenses in New York, Massachusetts, and Georgia, and is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He is certified as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist, as an Athletic Trainer, and in CPR and First Aid. A decorated Eagle Scout, Straley won the Koko Kassabian award while at Northeastern for outstanding achievement in leadership, scholarship, and professional development.

A native of Newton, Mass., Straley currently resides in Dobbs Ferry, NY with his wife Jennifer and their daughter Annabelle.

Lindsay Darcy enters her second year as academic advisor for the Manhattan College Athletic Department. Darcy manages the academic support for Manhattan’s 300+ student-athletes, a role which has helped the department rank among the nation’s best according to several NCAA measures of academic success. Darcy’s duties include assisting student-athletes in class scheduling, monitor their academic progress, oversee the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and coordinate tutoring and other special needs.

Prior to this appointment, Darcy worked as

Manhattan’s compliance coordinator since the 2007-2008 academic year. In this role, she was responsible for monitoring and regulating NCAA eligibility.

Darcy (nee Peirson) earned a bachelor’s degree from Syracuse University in 2005. She was a four-year letterwinner for the Orange field hockey team, and earned a Big East Scholar-Athlete selection all four years. In 2001, she earned All-America honors from the National Field Hockey Coaches’ Association (NFHCA). At the conclusion of her final season with the Orange, Darcy was selected to the All-Big East Second Team.
