The Manhattan women’s soccer team enters the 2010 campaign prepared to make a strong run at the MAAC title. Returning a blend of skilled players at each position and a crop of talented newcomers head coach Brendan Lawler has reason to be optimistic for his first season in Riverdale.

The Lady Jaspers look to pick up where they left off last year after playing their best soccer during the final weekend at the MAAC Tournament in Orlando, Fla. Coming just a shootout shy of advancing to the 2009 semifinals, the Lady Jaspers feel they can build on the experience and make a claim for the program’s first MAAC championship.

“Everytime we speak with the players their excitement and passion is infections as they prepare to build on the successes of last season,” said Lawler. “The players put in a lot of work this summer. With the continued hard work, dedication, and a little bit of luck this group of returning players and incoming freshmen will be ready to make a strong run at each and every opponent on our schedule.”

Manhattan has 15 returning letterwomen and 10 newcomers who will rally behind the leadership of two-time team captain Kara Bucci. The senior from Newburgh, N.Y. will lead the Lady Jaspers from the back and anchor a defensive unit which helped generate six shutout victories a year ago.

The Lady Jaspers return their leading scorer in two-time All-MAAC selection Caroline Morse who finished with 20 points and eight goals last season, including four game winners which ranked as the third most in the MAAC. Fellow seniors Marissa Greco, Michelle Miyaki and Kristin Spiros offer the Lady Jaspers veteran leadership at the midfield, while MAAC All-Rookie goalkeeper Kara Davis looks to build on a successful campaign where she finished third in the MAAC with a 1.19 goal against average and five shutouts.

Lawler’s expectations for his program this season are simple, “We expect each player and coach to work hard and smart every second of training. I have no doubt that if we can maintain our focus for the entire season, we will be in position to challenge in the conference tournament.”

ATTACKThe Lady Jaspers have several weapons up front, including senior

Caroline Morse who has already engraved her name in the Manhattan record book with 45 points in her first three years with the program. Known throughout her career for ‘timely’ goals, half of her 16 scores went for game winners. Morse brings an aggressive attacking dimension to the field and an indisputable will to win.

Juniors Tara Gleason and Megan Lavecchia are also expected to bolster the Manhattan offense. Despite missing the first half of the 2009 season sidelined with injuries, the duo provided much of the offensive support during the Lady Jaspers stretch run. Combining for seven points in the last eight games, Gleason and Lavecchia represented one-third of the team’s offense.

Gleason was a star in the 2009 MAAC Tournament scoring the game winning goal in the Lady Jaspers’ opening round victory and assisting Manhattan’s goal in a double overtime draw in the quarterfinals. Manhattan will again look to Gleason to create scoring opportunities with her energetic attacking nature.

Lavecchia brings firepower to the forward position as she displayed in her first four games back last season by scoring two goals which helped Manhattan to three wins and a tie. Over her career, she has used her speed and elusiveness with the ball to record nine points, including four goals, over 25 matches.

Kayla Howden should be in the mix after playing in 18 games last year, starting in four as a freshman. She helps stretch opposing defenses with her quickness and versatility. The product of Monroe, Conn. lifted the Lady Jaspers’ last season with the game winning goal in a victory over Army.

“The speed and attacking mindset of our returning players will really allow us to get in behind our opponents and will be a great example for our incoming freshmen to follow,” explained Lawler.

The Lady Jaspers add four newcomers up front who can contribute and add depth to the lineup: Martine Diamond, Kathleen Jordan, Caroline Kaplan and Lauren Narode.

Diamond, a dynamic player from Island Park, N.Y., lettered all four years at Kellenberg Memorial High School. She creates well off the

dribble and makes tremendous runs off the ball.Jordan is a technically skilled forward with good quickness who

helped power Haddonfield Memorial High School (NJ) to two state championships. She is an intense player who brings a plethora of energy to the field.

The Lady Jaspers will also utilize Kaplan who is an All-Section I honoree from defending New York State Champion John Jay East Fishkill High School. Kaplan is a versatile forward who can excel either playing on the flank or more centrally.

Narode can help power the Manhattan offense from the midfield. The local product from Blauvelt, N.Y. is explosive, technically sound and can break down defenses in 1-v-1 opportunities.

“We have a great mix of returning upperclassmen and some new legs to make us really dangerous in the attack,” explained Lawler. “I strongly believe that we have terrific depth at forward and in the wide attacking positions that will provide diversity in how we make our attack harder for opponents to plan for.”

MIDFIELDManhattan returns an experienced midfield that will look to increase

its production and fill a void from the graduation of Courtney McMahon, the program’s all-time assist leader and two-time First Team All-MAAC selection. The Lady Jaspers’ veteran core of seniors Marissa Greco, Michelle Miyaki and Kristin Spiros, along with sophomores Brittany Egan and Allison Pfeiffer will likely take on the bulk of the work.

“Our midfield has a great mix of attacking flair and physical ball winners,” stated Lawler. “We have the capability to dictate the pace of play through our technical ability and tactical awareness, while also playing physical enough to make it difficult for our opponents to establish a rhythm in the center.”

Greco is one of the Lady Jaspers’ most consistent players at both ends of the field. She played in all 20 games last season and has 35 games under her belt since transferring to Manhattan two years ago. The Long Valley, N.J. native has a good vision of the field and uses her creativity on and off the ball to break down defenses. Greco finished with three points last season and tied second on the team with a .625 shots on goal percentage.

Miyaki is the most experienced among the Lady Jaspers midfielders as she enters the season with 49 games played during her career. She brings a good defensive presence to the midfield and excels playing in the air. Miyaki did not miss a game last season, appearing in all 20

matches. The Trumbull, Conn. native displayed she can also be a threat on offense posting three points, including a game winning goal.

Spiros can strengthen the Lady Jaspers’ offensive efforts with her good technical skills and ability to finish inside the box. She started 13 of 19 appearances last season finishing with three points.

Egan and Pfeiffer earned valuable experience last season coming off the bench in their rookie campaigns. Egan has good knowledge of the game, along with an explosive presence as she displayed in all 16 appearances. Pfeiffer brings a plethora of energy to the field and has a knack for creating scoring opportunities. She played in 17 games and scored a game winning goal.

Newcomers Claire Reinhard and Keara Hunt will compete for time at the midfield. Reinhard, a junior transfer from Southern Connecticut State, offers an excellent technical presence and excels playing in the middle of the field. With good composure, Reinhard knows how to control the tempo of a game. Hunt is a three-time All-Section I honoree from John Jay East Fishkill, the two-time defending New York State Champion. Hunt is a hard-nosed player with tremendous pace.

BACKThe Lady Jaspers will rely on upperclassmen Kara Bucci and Devon

Lutz to carry the bulk of the work in the back. Bucci, a returning team captain, is a confident player who beholds a natural ability to lead as she has shown in 51 career appearances. She was one of just two Lady Jaspers to start all 20 games last season, and will be looked upon to lead the way again this season.

“As a key defender organizing the team in front of her, Kara has proven through her career that she commands the respect of her teammates, leading through word and action on and off the field,” stated Lawler.

Lutz will also be a big part of the Lady Jaspers’ back field. The junior from Waterford, N.Y. started 31 of 37 appearances in her first two seasons in Riverdale. As one of the Lady Jaspers best attackers out of the back, Lutz has a reputation of generating offense at key times as her six career points include a game winning goal and three assists which set up game winners. Defensively, Lutz covers significant ground and displays great composure on the field.

Sophomore Nicole Landes will make the transition to the backline this season. She gained plenty of collegiate experience playing in 15 games, starting three, last year at the midfield and forward positions. The Stony Point, N.Y. native came on the scene strong posting her first career assist in a season opening victory. Landes led the team in shots on goal percentage (.833).

Sara Jones along with freshmen Shannon Barry, Alex Iovine and Janie Schlauder will also vie for a position in the backline. Jones saw limited action as a freshman appearing in eight games as part of a veteran-laden defense. The California native from Aliso Niguel High School adds depth at the flank. Barry, a 5-8 product from Lagrangeville, N.Y., is a versatile athlete who offers the Lady Jaspers a good presence in the air. Barry was a two-time All-Section honoree at Arlington High

School. Iovine comes to Manhattan from Canton, Conn. where she graduated as the all-time assist leader at Northwest Catholic High School. She is a technically superb player who is strong with both feet and plays with great composure. Schaulder, a product of Wallingford, Conn., is a creative player who has a true passion for the game. She offers Manhattan another attacking presence in the back.

“Our defenders are going to have a lot of responsibility placed on them as they will be asked to shutdown each and every opponent we face,” explained Lawler. “Luckily, though, we have terrific returning leadership and experience directing our defensive tactics.”

GOALKEEPERMAAC All-Rookie goalkeeper Kara Davis returns for her sophomore

campaign, and will compete with senior Alyssa Bachowski and freshman Maria Sanzari for the job between the pipes.

“The goalkeeper position is going to win us games this year,” emphasized Lawler. “Through preserving tight wins with their great ability to make saves, their intelligence in defensive organization, and starting attacking movements with their strong distribution, they will be vital to the success of the program.”

Davis started all 19 appearances in goal last season as a freshman continuously improved as the year progressed. She ranked third in the MAAC with a 1.19 goal against average and five shutouts. Davis, a product of Redding, Conn., is a terrific shot stopper who has great athleticism and brings explosiveness to the goal.

Bachowski, a 5-8 keeper from Garden City, N.Y., brings an energetic presence to the cage. Despite missing last season due to injury, she displayed her abilities in 2008 when she started the final 10 games of the season and notched three shutouts.

The Lady Jaspers welcome Sanzari to the goalkeeping mix. A 5-9 rookie who hails from North Haven, Conn. Sanzari lettered four years at North Haven High School. She is a tremendous athlete who possesses quickness, agility and toughness, which goes along with her terrific hands. Sanzari’s precise outlet throw can be a spark to counterattacks.

SCHEDULEThe Lady Jaspers competitive 19-game slate features non-conference

matches with members of the Colonial Athletic Association, Atlantic 10 and Patriot League. Manhattan will host nine home games on its state-of-the-art turf field at Gaelic Park.

The Lady Jaspers dive into the regular-season with their first seven games on the road, beginning with the season opener on Aug. 27 against Fairleigh Dickinson at Gaelic Park. Manhattan travels cross-town on Aug. 29 for its always highly anticipated contest with local rival Fordham.

Manhattan begins September with two of its first three games against Patriot League opponents. The Lady Jaspers travel to West Point, N.Y., to face off with Army (Sept. 5), which is two years removed from a Patriot League Championship and NCAA Tournament berth. The Lady Jaspers earned a 1-0 victory over the Black Knights last year on Senior Day. Manhattan will spend the next weekend in Maryland for matches at Towson (Sept. 10) and Navy (Sept. 12).

The Lady Jaspers travel to back-to-back America East Conference opponents playing at Albany (Sept. 17) and Stony Brook (Sept. 19). Manhattan returns to Gaelic Park on Sept. 24 for a match with Bryant under the lights. The contest with the Bulldogs jump starts a four-game homestand, which includes a contest with Cornell (Sept. 26) and conference matches against Siena (Oct. 1) and Marist (Oct. 3).

Manhattan hits the road again to face league members Fairfield (Oct. 8) and Iona (Oct. 10), before returning home for another four game stretch in Riverdale. The Lady Jaspers host Saint Peter’s on Oct. 15 as the second half of a Manhattan soccer doubleheader with the men’s squad. Manhattan also takes on Columbia (Oct. 18), and then completes its home slate with defending MAAC champion Loyola (Oct. 22) and Rider (Oct. 24). Manhattan eliminated Rider in the 2009 MAAC Championships, but fell to Loyola in a thrilling quarterfinal contest which came down to a shootout.

The Lady Jaspers spend the final weekend of the regular-season in Western New York when they visit Canisius (Oct. 29) and Niagara (Oct. 31). The top four teams in the conference will qualify for the 2010 MAAC Championships (Nov. 5 & 7) held on the Loyola University campus in Baltimore, Md. The league champion will receive an automatic bid to the 2010 NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament.

LAWLERHEAD COACH • FIRST SEASON

Brendan Lawler enters his first season as head women’s soccer coach at Manhattan College. Lawler brings seven years of coaching experience to the Lady Jaspers’ program, including collegiate coaching stints at the United States Military Academy and Marist College. A graduate of Saint Peter’s College, Lawler was a goalkeeper for the Peacocks’ men’s soccer program.

Lawler comes to Riverdale from Marist College where he served as an assistant for the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 seasons under head coach Elizabeth Roper. The Newburgh, N.Y., native was responsible for assisting with the coordination of training sessions, recruiting student-athletes and scouting opponents. During his time with the Red Foxes, Lawler mentored a goalkeeping unit which recorded eight shutouts and he helped develop four All-MAAC Rookie Team selections in his two seasons. Lawler also worked with the Marist men’s soccer team’s goalkeepers last season.

In three years at West Point working with former men’s head coach Kurt Swanbeck, Lawler primarily trained the goalkeepers and defensive unit from 2006-2009. In 2007, the Black Knights posted their highest win total in over 10 years.

Lawler has been a member of the goalkeeping coaching staff for the United States Soccer Federation Region I Olympic Development Program since 2007. Working within the Town of Wallkill Soccer Club in Middletown, N.Y. for five years, Lawler was the head coach of the girl’s under-18 Red Devils premier team. Since 2005, Lawler also served as a girls Olympic Development Program head coach within Eastern New York Youth Soccer.

At the high school level, Lawler was the head girls varsity coach at Pine Bush from 2003-2005. In 2005, he led the program to the school’s first-ever Section IX Championship.

Lawler played Division I soccer and graduated cum laude from Saint Peter’s College earning a bachelor’s of arts in political science with minors in secondary education and history in 2002. Lawler was a teacher at Pine Bush High School for four years before pursuing a master’s degree in political science.

Lawler holds a United States Soccer Federation A License and a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) advanced national goalkeeping diploma with distinguished pass. He currently serves as an instructor for the NSCAA Goalkeeping Academy.


ALICIA

TIRELLI ASSISTANT COACH • FIRST SEASON

Alicia Tirelli enters her first season as assistant women’s soccer coach at Manhattan College. Tirelli was a standout forward at Florida Atlantic University and has competed the last four years at the professional level within the USL W-League. She brings collegiate, high school and club coaching experience to Riverdale.

Tirelli spent the 2008 season as a Division I assistant coach at her alma mater where she helped Florida Atlantic advance to the Sun Belt Conference semifinals. During her one-year term with the Owls, Tirelli mentored three players who received All-Sun Belt honors, and 14 of her student-athletes were named to the Dean’s List.

Most recently, Tirelli has coached within the club level working for Quickstrike FC recreational and premier teams in New Windsor, N.Y. In 2006, she served as the head coach of the junior varsity team at Coral Springs High School in Florida before spending two years as an

assistant club coach in Boca Raton, Fla., for Team Boca’s U14-U15 premier teams.

Tirelli received All-Conference accolades in each of her four years as a student-athlete at Florida Atlantic. A two-time team captain, Tirelli was named First Team All-Sun Belt and Sun Belt All-Tournament Team her junior year, after leading the Owls in goals and helping the team advance to the conference semifinals. Tirelli repeated as a First Team All-Sun Belt selection as a senior and finished her career with 66 points on 27 goals and 12 assists.

The Tampa, Fla. native currently plays professionally for the Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues of the USL W-League. She started her career in the W-League playing two seasons with the Cocoa Expos (2006-2007) and played the following year with the Tampa Bay Hellenic (2008).

ANDERSON-WINCHELLASSISTANT COACH • FIRST SEASON

Aaron Anderson-Winchell enters his first season as an assistant coach for the Manhattan women’s soccer team. The native of Bloomingburg, N.Y., brings nine years of club and high school coaching experience to Riverdale, including his most recent positions coaching the Quickstrike FC and serving as an assistant coach for the Quickstrike Lady Blues of the Pro-Am W-League. Additionally, he spent seven years coaching the Town of Wallkill Soccer Club and coached Pine Bush High School for three seasons.

Anderson-Winchell played two years at the University of Rhode Island where he helped the Rams win consecutive

Atlantic 10 championships and NCAA College Cup berths. He completed his collegiate career at the State University of New York at Cortlandt leading the Red Dragons to back-to-back SUNYAC titles. As a senior, he received All-SUNYAC and All-Regional All-America honors. Anderson-Winchell was also a member of two Section IX championship teams at Pine Bush High School. He is a Certified Personal Trainer and Performance Enhancement Specialist through the National Academy of Sports Medicine. Anderson-Winchell holds a USSF “B” coaching license.

The Manhattan women’s soccer team saved its best perfor-mance of the season for the MAAC Tournament Quarterfinals as the Lady Jaspers battle top-seeded and eventual champion Loyola through two overtimes in a classic game, which was decided by a shoot out.

Finishing the season with an 8-9-3 overall record, the Lady Jaspers played some of their best soccer in mid-October. Man-hattan did not lose for a five game span from Oct. 4 through Oct. 17, a surge which featured a thrilling 1-0 overtime victory against local MAAC rival Iona, and then back-to-back shut-outs to Army (1-0) and Saint Peter’s (3-0).

The Lady Jaspers were led by one of the strongest senior classes to come through the program. Senior co-captain Courtney McMahon led the Lady Jaspers with five assists and will graduate as the program’s all-time assist leader (24) and ninth in points (44). McMahon represented Manhattan on the 2009 All-MAAC First Team and was selected as a top-30 final-ist for the prestigious NCAA Women’s Soccer Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award which honors the top student-athletes in the country for their accomplishments in the classroom and on the playing field.

SEASON REVIEW

Senior back Jill Beauchamp joined McMahon on the All-MAAC First Team receiving the honor for the third straight season. Beauchamp, a co-captain from Westerly, R.I., started all 20 games and anchored a defensive unit which posted six shutouts, the second most in the conference. Junior forward Caroline Morse represented the Lady Jaspers on the All-MAAC Second Team and freshman Kara Davis was named to the All-Rookie Team. Morse posted a team-high 20 points and ranked seventh in the MAAC with eight goals. Davis was a mainstay in net starting all 19 appearances to finish third in the league with a 1.19 goals against average. The Redding, Conn. native finished the year with seven wins, three ties and five shut-outs.

Manhattan was represented well on the All-Academic Team as nine members were recognized for their hard work in the classroom: Jill Beauchamp, Kara Bucci, Tracey Colantonio, Amanda Fischer, Alexandra Konneker, Megan Lavecchia, Courtney McMahon, Kristin Spiros and Laura Thurston.

With 10 institutions strongly bound by the sound principles of quality and integrity in academics and excellence in athletics, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference is in its 30th year of competition during the 2010-2011 academic year.

The MAAC was founded in 1980 by six charter members: the U.S. Military Academy, Fairfield University, Fordham University, Iona College, Manhattan College and Saint Peter’s College. Competition followed one year later in the fall of 1981 with members competing in the sports of men’s cross country and men’s soccer. On January 2, 1982, Army traveled to Iona for the first MAAC men’s basket-ball game and the MAAC story had begun.

Today, Conference members include: Canisius College, Fairfield University, Iona College, Loyola Uni-versity Maryland, Manhattan College, Marist College, Niagara University, Rider University, Saint Peter’s College, and Siena College. In addition, associate members include the University of Detroit Mercy, Jacksonville University and Virginia Military Institute in men’s lacrosse. St. Francis (N.Y.) College, Villanova University and Wagner College are all associate members of the MAAC Women’s Water Polo League. Drake University, Robert Morris University and Sacred Heart University compete in women’s rowing, while the University at Albany, Boston University and the University of Hartford began competition in women’s golf in the spring of 2010. The MAAC will support 24 sports and championships during the 2010-2011 academic year.

The MAAC Basketball Championships return to the Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Conn. for 2011, with Springfield’s MassMutual Center preparing to host the 2012-2014 championships. By having an excel-lent working relationship with various facilities, the MAAC has been able to attract a number of NCAA Championship events. Most recently, the MAAC, Canisius College and Niagara University successfully hosted the 2010 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship First and Second Rounds at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo, New York. All three parties hosted the event in 2004 and 2007. The MAAC and Rider University co-hosted the 2009 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship Regional at the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, N.J., after recording the third highest attendance figure for the women’s championship with the First and Second Rounds in 2006. The MAAC and Rider will work together to co-host the 2011 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pa.

MAAC ASSOCIATE SPORTSIn June of 1995, the MAAC continued to develop opportunities for

student-athletes as the conference announced the formation of the MAAC Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse Leagues. The men’s league began competition in the spring of 1996, while the women’s league commenced in the spring of 1997. The men’s league consists of four MAAC schools -- Canisius, Manhattan, Marist, and Siena – and three associate members – Detroit Mercy, Jacksonville and Virginia Military Institute. The women’s league consists of MAAC institutions Canisius, Fairfield, Iona, Manhattan, Marist, Niagara and Siena.

In 2002, the MAAC added the MAAC Women’s Water Polo League. The league is made up of three MAAC schools – Iona, Marist and Siena – as well as three associate members, St. Francis (N.Y.), Villanova and Wagner.

Sacred Heart started participating in MAAC Women’s Rowing in the spring of 2008. Drake University joined the league for the 2010 MAAC

Championship, while Robert Mor-ris will begin competition in the spring of 2011.

In the summer of 2009, the MAAC added three associ-ate members – Albany, Boston University and Hartford – to women’s golf, with the programs starting competition against MAAC members Fairfield, Ni-agara and Siena in 2009-2010.

Academics and AthleticsThe MAAC prides itself on the

accomplishments of its student-athletes in the classroom, as well as on the field. Mary Beth Riley, a 1991 graduate of Canisius, was the first recipi-ent of the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. In the fall of 1998, Erin Whalen, a member of the Iona women’s rowing team, was awarded one of the nation’s 32 Rhodes Scholarships for academic achievement and civic leadership. Jose Vargas, a Loyola student, was also awarded a Rhodes Scholarship in 1999. First-class facilities are the

rule with MAAC schools, as teams regularly play in top-notch arenas, such as Madison Square Garden, the IZOD Center, HSBC Arena, Times Union Center, the Arena at Harbor Yard and Sovereign Bank Arena. The other MAAC championships boast their share of outstanding locales as well, such as the Reverend Harold Ridley, S.J., Athletic Complex at Loyola, where both the men’s and women’s soccer championships will be contested in the fall of 2010, and Waterfront Park in Trenton, home of the 2011 MAAC Baseball Championship. This year, the MAAC will take its volleyball championship to Orlando, Florida, where it will conduct its post-season event at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The MAAC Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships will be held at Disney’s Magnolia Golf Course.

In the past several years, a number of the MAAC schools have also enjoyed success in NCAA Championships. MAAC schools have made a total of 75 NIT appearances and 45 NCAA appearances. In addition, Fairfield represented the league last season in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament while the Fairfield women participated in the Women’s Basketball Invitational. The MAAC currently possesses 13 automatic bids to NCAA Championships in men’s and women’s basket-ball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s lacrosse, and women’s water polo. In 2007, the Marist women’s basketball team advanced to the Sweet 16 before falling to the eventual National Champion, the University of Tennessee. Last fall, the No. 11 Iona men’s cross country team fin-ished tied for eighth place at the NCAA Championship race, extended the Gaels’ streak to eight straight Top 10 national finishes. Canisius softball, Manhattan track, Manhattan and Marist baseball and Loyola soccer and lacrosse have also flourished on the national stage.

The MAAC has also been a leader in the forefront of technology, ex-panding the notoriety of the league into cyberspace. In 2007, the league reached an agreement with JumpTV, Inc. to sponsor the MAAC web page. Launched in November 1999, www.maacsports.com has been a great success, providing fans with up-to-date contest results, multimedia content and an online merchandise store.

The MAAC President for the 2010-2011 academic year is Rev. Jeffrey von Arx, S.J., the President of Fairfield University. The Vice-President is Dr. Eugene J. Cornacchia, Ph.D., the President of Saint Peter’s Col-lege. Ed Laughlin, Director of Athletics at Niagara University, will chair the Committee on Athletic Administration, and Karin Torchia, Associate Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator at Rider University will serve as Vice Chair.

Dr. Brennan O’Donnell is the 19th president of Manhattan College, having assumed the

responsibilities of the position July 1, 2009.Dr. O’Donnell comes to Manhattan from

Fordham College at Rose Hill, Fordham University’s oldest and largest school. As dean of Fordham College, he was the chief

academic officer of a College of Arts and Sciences enrolling about 3,200 students under a

faculty of more than 200.Before coming to New York, Dr. O’Donnell spent 17 years at Loyola

College in Maryland (now Loyola University Maryland), where he served as a professor of English and, from 1999-2004, as director of the university-wide Honors Program. An active scholar, his teaching and research interests focus mainly upon poetry, especially of the British Romantic period, and on religion and literature, particularly contemporary American Catholic writers. He has authored two books on the poetry of William Wordsworth and co-edited The Work of Andre Dubus, a collection of essays published as a double issue of Religion and the Arts. In addition, Dr. O’Donnell has published articles, essays and reviews in some of the leading journals in his field. At Manhattan, he will continue to hold a faculty appointment, as he had at Fordham and Loyola, as professor of English.

As the first president of the College not to be a member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, Dr. O’Donnell is treading new ground at

Manhattan College. He has experience in such transitions, however, as he was also the first layperson to serve as dean of Fordham College at Rose Hill. His publications and lectures demonstrate a keen engagement in issues of faith and education, specifically Catholic higher education. From 1994–2000, he served as editor of the national magazine Conversations on Jesuit Higher Education, and he was a member of the National Seminar on Jesuit Higher Education from 1993–2000. In addition, he has served as a board member for the Lilly Fellows Program and for Collegium, a consortium of Catholic universities that strives to strengthen faculty understanding of and participation in the mission of Catholic higher education.

A native of Pennsylvania’s Wyoming Valley, Dr. O’Donnell earned his B.A. with highest distinction and Honors in English at The Pennsylvania State University in 1981, where he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He earned an M.A. and a Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in English and American Literature and Language. He is the recipient of numerous fellowships, grants, awards and honors.

Dr. O’Donnell is married to Angela O’Donnell (formerly Alaimo), a poet and writer who teaches at Fordham, where she serves as associate director of the Francis and Ann Curran Center for American Catholic Studies. The couple has three sons: Charles (a graduate of Saint John’s University, Minnesota, and a teacher in the St. Paul, Minnesota, public schools), Patrick (a 2009 graduate of Columbia University, currently pursuing graduate studies in philosophy in Leuven, Belgium), and Will (a senior English major at Fordham).

A 1968 graduate of Manhattan College, Byrnes enters his 23rd year as director of athletics.

Since his arrival back to Riverdale in May of 1988, Byrnes has presided over a renaissance period in Manhattan College athletics. During his tenure, the men’s and

women’s basketball programs have earned eight NCAA Tournament bids (four women, four men). Additionally, the Jaspers have appeared in five postseason and preseason National Invitational Tournaments (NIT). Women’s soccer and men’s and women’s lacrosse began competition at the Division I level under Byrnes, and 14 different teams have won conference championships-men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor track, men’s and women’s outdoor track, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, volleyball, men’s tennis, softball and baseball. In addition, to date, 26 student-athletes have received All-America honors for both athletic and academic achievements.

Before returning to Manhattan, Byrnes spent 13 years with the Morrison-Knudsen Company, one of the largest engineering and construction firms in the nation.

A native of Garrison, New York, Byrnes earned his undergraduate degree in physical education with a minor in biology. He also holds an M.B.A. from City University in Seattle, Washington.

As an undergraduate, Byrnes was a member of the Jaspers’ club

football team. Byrnes served as team captain and played both defensive tackle and offensive end. He spent one season as an assistant coach and helped guide Manhattan to a 6-2 overall record in 1969.

Upon graduation, Byrnes began a teaching and coaching career at Queen of Peace High School in North Arlington, New Jersey. He also served as the school’s director of athletics from 1970-73. Under his leadership, Queen of Peace registered state tournament appearances in baseball and basketball, while also capturing the Parochial “B” State Championship in football (1972).

In addition to his responsibilities at Manhattan, Byrnes served two stints (1997-99, 2004-06) as president of the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Basketball Association, at one time the sponsoring body of the NIT. He also served on the NCAA Championship Committee in 1999-2000. He is currently the chair of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Men’s Basketball Committee and the Committee on Athletic Administration, as well as a member of the ECAC Officials Negotiating Committee. In recognition of his years of outstanding contributions to Jasper athletics, Byrnes was inducted into the Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004.

Byrnes resides in Croton-on-Hudson, New York, along with his wife, Rosemary. He is the father of five children: Bob, Carolyn (Manhattan ’97), Brian (Manhattan ’99), Darren and Brigid.
