season outlook

In 2011, the Manhattan College volleyball team had its second consecutive winning season, putting together a 16-15 overall record. however, the Jaspers just missed out on a trip to the four-team Metro atlantic athletic Conference (MaaC) tournament after going 9-9 in conference play.

getting back to the MaaC tournament is one of fourth-year head Coach Mark Jones’s main goals heading into the 2012 campaign. ten letterwinners, including five starters, from last year’s team return this season. With seven talented newcomers, a combination of transfers and incoming freshmen, joining them on the roster, Manhattan has the personnel necessary to make a run at the MaaC title.

“this is the deepest team we’ve had since I’ve been here,” Jones said. “We’re at least two deep at every position, so more people will be able to get playing time or, more importantly, rest when they need it. We struggled in that area last season.”

outsiDe hitterthe Jaspers return all three of their

starting outside hitters from a season ago. Sophomore malia mcguinness is coming off a tremendous rookie campaign where she was named Second team all-MaaC in addition to earning a place on the MaaC all-Rookie team. Mcguinness led the Jaspers (and all MaaC freshmen) with 3.40 kills per set in 2011. She also finished third on the squad with 2.53 digs per set last season.

another player who was a major difference-maker during her first campaign in a Jaspers uniform last year is junior mariana Furquim. after one year at Unlv, Furquim transferred to Manhattan last season and ranked third on the squad with 2.50 kills per set. She had four double-doubles a year ago, including a spectacular 20-kill, 20-dig performance in a five-set home win over Marist on oct. 16. Furquim earned MaaC offensive Player of the Week honors for that effort. In addition, she tied for second on the team with 30 service aces last season and is the Jaspers’ top returning blocker, having recorded 72 stuffs in 2011.

Sophomore sarah haselhorst and freshman clare bozzo will also challenge for playing time. haselhorst saw action mostly in the back row last season, but was recruited to play all the way around and is more than capable of producing from anywhere on the floor. bozzo helped Santa Catalina high School reach the norCal State tournament for the first time ever in 2010. She also has the versatility to move into the middle.

“We’re definitely experienced at outside hitter,” Jones said. “a majority of our points came from the outside last season and the returners can play all six rotations, which brings some consistency to the offense.”

on the right side, three players will fight it out for the starting nod. Senior alexa lampasona is the incumbent starter. a member of Jones’s first four-year graduating class, she has improved each season since her arrival in Riverdale. last year, lampasona appeared in every set and averaged 2.21 kills per frame.

Junior ellie Wiekamp joined the program during the spring semester after missing all of 2011 with a shoulder injury. She was an honorable mention all-orange empire Conference selection after leading Irvine valley College in both kills and aces in 2010. Fellow newcomer sydney volovski also figures into the mix. volovski was named first team all-conference after leading oswego high School outside Chicago to the regional championship last season. In addition, she won Junior olympics and Pre-nationals titles while playing club volleyball for Sports Performance in 2011.

“all three right sides have good experience,” Jones said. “alexa’s been the starter for the last two years; Sydney has been consistent in practice; and ellie can play all the way around, which is something we haven’t had from this position in the past.”

miDDle blockerthe biggest void Jones needed to fill this

offseason was at middle blocker, where both of last year’s starters were lost to graduation. to ease the transition, Jones has brought in three talented transfers who are all capable of stepping in and contributing right away. they join a pair of returners to give Jones the deepest group of middle blockers he’s ever had.

“this is probably the most competitive position on the roster,” Jones said. “nothing is set in stone. We’ve got a lot of experience in the middle. that maturity will definitely help.”

the three junior transfers are Juliana behrens, katelyn nugent and karlee

season outlookanderson. behrens comes to Manhattan after two seasons at the University of Cincinnati, where she helped the bearcats win their first-ever big east tournament title last season. nugent was a First team all-nWaaCC Western Region selection last year at green River Community College in Washington after leading the team in both kills and hitting percentage for the second straight season. anderson averaged 1.84 kills and 0.61 blocks per set while leading San Diego Mesa College to a share of the Pacific Coast athletic Conference championship in 2011.

Senior maddie heck looks to bounce back after being limited by injuries during each of the past two seasons. She’s shown flashes of brilliance while on the floor, which will make it hard to keep her out of the lineup when healthy. Sophomore Deandra anderson is another viable option in the middle.

setterafter playing in every set during her first

season in Riverdale, sophomore hollegn henderson was recognized with a selection to the MaaC all-Rookie team. She handed out 1,141 assists last season, the eighth-highest single-season total in program history, and ranked third in the MaaC with 9.92 assists per set. With a year in the Jaspers’ system already under her belt, Jones has full confidence in henderson’s ability to run the offense.

Senior Jamie collareta also has experience running the Manhattan offense. She was the Jaspers’ starter in 2010 and should provide a smooth transition when called upon.

“We have two very good setters with game experience,” Jones said. “It’s nice to have two players who’ve really matured into the position and can both do the job. there might even be some situations when they’re both in the lineup.”

Freshman katie lang gives Jones a third option at setter. lang led Fontbonne hall academy to back-to-back brooklyn Diocesan Championships in 2009-10 and was a three-time First team all-brooklyn selection.

liberothe libero position is anchored by a pair

of senior captains, each of whom held down the role at some point last season. kelsey huntoon became the regular libero late in the season last year and ended up leading the team with 344 digs. one of the top servers on the squad, she tied for second in that category with 30 aces last year. huntoon was also second on the team with 42 assists in 2011.

Julie bies has never missed a set in her Manhattan career. bies enters her final season fourth on the Jaspers’ all-time list with 1,315 career digs. last season, she placed second on the squad with 332 digs while also posting 25 aces and 29 assists.

“Kelsey finished last year as the starter, but Julie will definitely have a spot on the floor,” Jones said. “Whoever passes and plays defense consistently will play.”

haselhorst also saw time at libero in 2011. She could figure into the plans at the spot again this season.

scheDulethe Jaspers begin the 2012 campaign

at the la Salle Invitational on aug. 25-26. Manhattan also plays in tournaments at William & Mary and harvard before its opening MaaC match at Iona on Sept. 15. Manhattan’s home opener is scheduled for Sept. 19 against lafayette.

the matchup with lafayette is the beginning of a season-high six-match homestand that also includes five straight MaaC contests from Sept. 22-30. Manhattan then goes back on the road for nine of its next 12 matches before ending the season at home against Saint Peter’s on nov. 10.

“this schedule allows us to be competitive with a variety of teams,” Jones said. “there are a few matches where we’ll be challenged, but I also know that we can be successful. I’m confident that we’ll have a great season.”

Manhattan was picked third in the MaaC Preseason Coaches Poll, its highest ranking since 2007. the top four teams at the conclusion of the 18-match, double round-robin conference schedule will advance to the MaaC tournament, which will be held at Fairfield on nov. 16-17.

“no. 3 is the highest preseason ranking we’ve had, which shows we’re getting that respect from the coaches,” Jones said. “It’s a long season and third place is a great goal, but we want to achieve more than that. With hard work, I think we can.”

Mark Jones enters his fourth season as Manhattan’s head volleyball coach, and his second in a full-time capacity. In 2010, he was named anaconda Sports Metro atlantic athletic Conference (MaaC) Coach of the year after leading the Jaspers to a school-record 11 MaaC victories and their first 20-win season in seven years. Manhattan followed that up with a 16-15 campaign in 2011, marking the program’s first back-to-back winning seasons since 2002-03.

Manhattan posted an 8-23 record in 2009, Jones’ first season at the helm, before notching a 20-14 mark during the 2010 campaign. It was Manhattan’s first winning season since 2005 and first 20-win campaign since 2003. the Jaspers were picked to finish ninth in the MaaC Preseason Poll, but ended up tied for third place with an 11-7 conference record. In 2010, the Jaspers snapped an 11-match losing streak against Fairfield and swept the season series with Siena for the first time in program history. Manhattan also put together a pair of six-match winning streaks and went an impressive 7-2 in five-set matches in 2010.

Jones came to Riverdale after a two-year stint as the top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Maine. Under his guidance, the black bears qualified for the america east Conference tournament in 2008. Prior to his time at Maine, Jones spent two seasons as an assistant at tennessee State University. the tigers posted back-to-back 20-win seasons and won the ohio valley Conference Championship in 2005. tennessee State went 26-6 against ovC opponents during his two seasons in nashville.

Jones began his coaching career at his alma mater, Washington State, during the 1994-95 athletic season. he served as a volunteer assistant with the Cougars’ women’s program during the fall and was head coach of the men’s squad in the spring. the women’s team qualified for the

nCaa tournament and finished the year ranked in the top 25 during each of his four seasons, including an appearance in the regional finals in 1996. Washington State went 27-6 that season, finishing second in the Pac-10 and earning a year-end national ranking of no. 7.

the Washington State men’s team went 99-22 during his four seasons at the helm. Jones’ teams went 46-4 in the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate volleyball association, including consecutive 13-0 campaigns in 1997-98. Jones led the Cougars to four straight PIva championships and a third-place finish in the 1998 national Collegiate volleyball Championships.

after one season as the top assistant with northwestern State’s women’s program in 1998, Jones moved on to William Woods University, where he was the top assistant with both the men’s and women’s programs in 1999-2000. he was named head coach of both programs in august 2000. the women’s team won at least 18 matches and finished third in the america Midwest Conference during each of his three seasons at the helm.

after going 13-13 during his first season as mentor of the owls’ men’s team, Jones was named Mid-america Men’s volleyball Intercollegiate Conference Coach of the year in 2002. that season, he led William Woods to a 31-4 record and the naIa national Championship. his 2003 squad finished the season ranked fifth in the nation with an 18-11 overall record. overall, Jones went 62-28 with the William Woods men’s team and 57-49 with the women’s program.

a 1995 graduate of Washington State, Jones won four varsity letters as a member of the Cougars’ men’s volleyball team. he received master’s degrees from William Woods in 2001 and tennessee State in 2007.

Competition followed one year later in the fall of 1981 with members competing in the sports of men’s cross country and men’s soccer. on January 2, 1982, army traveled to Iona for the first MaaC men’s basketball game and the MaaC story had begun.

today, Conference members include: Canisius College, Fairfield University, Iona College, loyola University Maryland, Manhattan College, Marist College, niagara University, Rider University, Saint Peter’s College, and Siena College. In addition, associate members include the University of Detroit Mercy, Jacksonville University and virginia Military Institute in men’s lacrosse. St. Francis (n.y.) Dr. brennan o’Donnell is the 19th president of Manhat-tan College, having assumed the responsibilities of the position July 1, 2009.

Dr. o’Donnell comes to Manhattan from Fordham Col-lege at Rose hill, Fordham University’s oldest and larg-est school. as dean of Fordham College, he was the chief academic officer of a College of arts and Sciences enrolling about 3,200 students under a faculty of more than 200.

before coming to new york, Dr. o’Donnell spent 17 years at loyola College in Maryland (now loyola University Mary-land), where he served as a professor of english and, from 1999-2004, as director of the university-wide honors Pro-gram. an active scholar, his teaching and research interests focus mainly upon poetry, especially of the british Romantic period, and on religion and literature, particularly contem-porary american Catholic writers. he has authored two books on the poetry of William Wordsworth and co-edited the Work of andre Dubus, a collection of essays published as a double issue of Religion and the arts. In addition, Dr. o’Donnell has published articles, essays and reviews in some of the leading journals in his field. at Manhattan, he will continue to hold a faculty appointment, as he had at Fordham and loyola, as professor of english.

as the first president of the College not to be a member of the brothers of the Christian Schools, Dr. o’Donnell is treading new ground at Manhattan College. he has experi-ence in such transitions, however, as he was also the first layperson to serve as dean of Fordham College at Rose hill.

his publications and lectures demonstrate a keen engage-ment in issues of faith and education, specifically Catholic higher education. From 1994–2000, he served as editor of the national magazine Conversations on Jesuit higher education, and he was a member of the national Seminar on Jesuit higher education from 1993–2000. In addition, he has served as a board member for the lilly Fellows Program and for Collegium, a consortium of Catholic universities that strives to strengthen faculty understanding of and participa-tion in the mission of Catholic higher education.

a native of Pennsylvania’s Wyoming valley, Dr. o’Donnell earned his b.a. with highest distinction and honors in english at the Pennsylvania State University in 1981, where he was inducted into Phi beta Kappa. he earned an M.a. and a Ph.D. at the University of north Carolina at Chapel hill in english and american literature and language. he is the recipient of numerous fellowships, grants, awards and honors.

Dr. o’Donnell is married to angela o’Donnell (formerly alaimo), a poet and writer who teaches at Fordham, where she serves as associate director of the Francis and ann Cur-ran Center for american Catholic Studies. the couple has three sons: Charles (a graduate of Saint John’s University, Minnesota, and a teacher in the St. Paul, Minnesota, public schools), Patrick (a 2009 graduate of Columbia Univer-sity, currently pursuing graduate studies in philosophy in leuven, belgium), and Will (a senior english major at Fordham).
