2013 SEASON OUTLOOK

The 2012 season was one of change for the Manhattan College softball team. After losing eight seniors from a squad that advanced to three straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournaments, Head Coach Tom Pardalis worked new faces into the lineup at almost every position and the Jaspers struggled to an 11-36 record.

However, that group also gained valuable experience, and this year’s roster features nine returning starters, including the entire pitching staff. For this reason, as well as the addition of seven talented newcomers, each of whom is capable of contributing in a big way, Pardalis is optimistic about his team’s chances in 2013.

“We have more options than last year,” Pardalis said. “We filled some holes with impact players who will be able to bring the program to a new level. We also have a lot of players who feel like they still have something to prove and a group of seniors with a wealth of experience. They’re excited to take that last step and bring home a MAAC Championship.”

PITCHERSIn just two years with the program,

junior Kate Bowen has already left her mark. Last season, she was named First Team All-Northeast Region and Second Team All-MAAC. The key piece of the Manhattan lineup, she was just as valuable in the circle, tossing a team-high 118.0 innings and leading the Jaspers with a 3.50 ERA. Bowen picked up five wins, including two shutouts last season, and earned MAAC Player of the Week honors after tossing a two-hit gem while also belting a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Manhattan a 4-0 victory over Fairfield on May 5.

Bowen, who plays second base when not pitching, also led the Jaspers in every major offensive category last season. She posted a .348 batting average, six home runs, 26 RBIs, eight doubles, 49 hits and 26 runs scored in 2012.

Senior Kelsi Redding transferred to Manhattan last season after two years at Scottsdale Community College and led the Jaspers in appearances (30). Redding recorded five wins in 2012, including a 5-0 shutout of Quinnipiac on April 18, and led the squad with 83 strikeouts. Sophomore Amy Bright was limited by injury to just 41.2 innings last season. Now fully healthy, Pardalis is looking for Bright to have a very successful 2013 campaign.

“We have three experienced pitchers, which will make us competitive in the MAAC,” Pardalis said. “They’ll all pitch; everybody will get the opportunity to prove themselves. The rotation’s not set, so there’s going to be a lot of competition.”

As a result of the injuries to the pitching staff, sophomore Mickayla Romero ended up seeing more time in the circle than expected as a freshman. She tossed 23 innings and made three starts in the circle a year ago. This season, Romero will revert back to her more-familiar role as a short-inning reliever while also serving as the Jaspers’ primary third baseman.

Pardalis has also brought in freshman Erin Hamm, who also figures to compete for significant innings. She earned first-

team all-conference honors as a senior at Perkiomen Valley High School in the Philadelphia area. Perkiomen Valley won the first conference championship in school history in 2012 behind Hamm’s perfect game in the final.

CATCHERSThe incumbent starter behind the plate

is senior Meghan McDevitt. One of the Jaspers’ top power hitters, McDevitt finished second on the squad with four home runs and 15 RBIs a season ago. If she’s hitting consistently, it’ll be hard to keep her big bat out of the lineup.

However, McDevitt faces stiff competition for the starting nod from freshmen Elena Bowman and Andi Stallard. Bowman was a three-time First Team All-League selection at Aragon High School in San Mateo, Calif., where she led the league in both home runs and RBIs. Stallard, meanwhile, earned two All-Greater Houston First Team selections while at Katy Taylor High School.

“We have three quality catchers,”

Pardalis said. “They all can hit, and they’re all excellent defenders. I can envision all three playing, even if they’re not necessarily catching.”

Pardalis expects to utilize at least two of the three at most times, with whoever’s not catching serving as the designated player. In addition, all three catchers are capable of playing other positions on the field. McDevitt can play first base, while Bowman will

compete for playing time at third base and Stallard figures into the mix in the outfield.

Senior Heather Leone has put herself in a position to have an impact. Leone does anything she can to help the team and has taken on much more of a leadership role. She’s one of the best bunters on the team and will likely see some at-bats as the designated player.

INFIELDERSAt first base, McDevitt will be fighting

with sophomore Sydney Weedon for the starting spot. McDevitt is better offensively, while Weedon has the stronger glove. However, she showed great improvement with the bat during the fall season and is primed to be a major contributor in the Jaspers’ lineup. Romero is another possibility at first base.

Bowen has been a key part of the Jaspers’ offense during her first two years in Riverdale, and 2013 should be no exception. On the days she isn’t pitching, Bowen will hold down second base. Sophomore Amanda Paxson got the call at second whenever Bowen was in the circle last season, while also working her way into the lineup as the designated player on 15 occasions, more than any other player on the roster. With her explosive bat and defensive versatility, Paxson should see plenty of at-bats again this season. Freshman Shannon Walsh made the team as a walk-on and provides the Jaspers with another option in the middle infield.

Another constant in the Manhattan lineup last season was shortstop Amanda Babcock. She started every game in 2012 and tied for the team lead with eight doubles. Babcock also ranked second on the squad in both hits (31) and runs scored (23) to go along with three home runs last season, and is very fundamentally sound defensively. Pardalis will once again look for Babcock to provide a steady presence, both on the field and in the lineup.

“Amanda is very steady and makes all the plays,” Pardalis said. “She has really stepped up as a leader and a captain, and she understands the system. She led the team in walks last season, but I’m looking for her to be a little more aggressive offensively and drive in runs.”

The fourth returning starter in the infield is Romero, who took over at the

hot corner late in the year last season and finished tied for third on the squad with 12 RBIs. She has a great glove to go along with a solid bat that produced a number of timely hits in 2012. Bowman will serve as the backup at third base.

“This is a really good group (of infielders),” Pardalis said. “They’ve matured together, and they’re ready to play together.”

OUTFIELDERSSenior Jen Keller, a team captain,

transitioned from right field to center last season and finished second on the squad with a .263 batting average while starting every game. A starter during each of her first three years in Riverdale, Keller is the projected starter in left field—her third different primary position in as many seasons.

Keller’s move to left field is necessitated by the arrival of freshman Emily Cutler, who should immediately step in as Manhattan’s starting center fielder. A switch-hitter, Cutler possesses all the attributes of your classic top-of-the-order table-setter. With her speed, Cutler will be a weapon on the base paths while also covering a lot of ground defensively.

After seeing limited playing time during her first two seasons, senior Jocelin Whitmore took over the right field job last year and thrived in a starting role. Whitmore is capable of hitting anywhere in the lineup. She was penciled into eight different places in the batting order last season before settling in as the Jaspers’ leadoff hitter late in the year. Also one of the top defensive outfielders in the MAAC, Whitmore didn’t commit an error and recorded nine outfield assists a season ago.

“Jocelin is primed for a breakout year,” Pardalis said. “To me, she’s one of the best outfielders in the league, and she adds an extra element with her ability to throw runners out.”

Fellow senior Anna Gallacher also figures to see significant time in the outfield. Gallacher appeared in 28 games last season, making 14 starts in left field, and is very strong defensively. Pardalis likes her confidence and mental toughness.

In addition to providing outfield depth, freshmen Audrey Avery and Zee Pierce give Pardalis a pair of valuable late-

game, left-handed pinch-hitting options. Stallard can also play the outfield.

SCHEDULEAfter opening the season with games

at Liberty (March 2) and Elon (March 3), the Jaspers begin their home schedule with a doubleheader against St. John’s on March 13. Manhattan then heads to the Stony Brook Tournament before heading to Kissimmee, Fla., for its annual appearance at the Rebel Spring Games. The Jaspers will also face Cornell in a twinbill before leaving the Sunshine State.

Manhattan begins a six-game homestand with a doubleheader against Columbia on March 26. After hosting Fairleigh Dickinson on April 3, the Jaspers conclude the homestand with their first MAAC twinbill of the season against Saint Peter’s (April 6). Manhattan plays its entire conference slate during the month of April, with Rider (April 13), Marist (April 27) and Siena (April 28) also visiting Gaelic Park.

The Jaspers will celebrate Senior Day against Siena on April 28, which will also serve as their final MAAC doubleheader of the season. Manhattan then concludes the regular season with a pair of non-conference twinbills. The Jaspers visit Sacred Heart on April 30, and return to Connecticut on May 4 to wrap up their 2013 slate against future MAAC foe Quinnipiac.

At the conclusion of the regular season, the top four teams in the MAAC will qualify for the MAAC Championships, which will once again be held at Marist’s Gartland Park from May 9-11. Manhattan is looking to get back to the conference tournament after missing out last season for the first time since 2008.

“We’ll have to be ready to play every day, but I feel this team will be very competitive in the MAAC,” Pardalis said. “Based on the experience we have back and the quality of the freshman class, Jasper fans need to be ready for an exciting season.”

TOM PARDALIS

Tom Pardalis enters his fourth season as Manhattan’s head softball coach. He posted a winning record and led Manhattan to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament during each of his first two seasons at the helm.

During his initial campaign in 2010, Pardalis led the Jaspers to a 25-23-1 record and their second straight MAAC Tournament appearance. The 25 wins were Manhattan’s highest total since 2006, which also marked the last time the Jaspers had finished above .500 prior to his arrival. In 2011, Manhattan finished above .500 again, going 25-23. The Jaspers defeated every team in the MAAC during the regular season, posting a school-record 12 conference wins en route to the No. 2 seed in the MAAC Tournament. It was Manhattan’s third straight postseason appearance, matching the feat of the 2004-06 squads.

Nine Manhattan players have been named All-MAAC in Pardalis’ three seasons, including two-time First Team All-MAAC choice Jaci Rahey. Rahey also earned a First Team All-Northeast Region selection in 2010. Kate Bowen was named First Team All-Northeast Region as a utility player in 2012 while also earning Second Team All-MAAC honors as an infielder. In addition, his student-athletes have found success in the classroom, earning a

total of 24 MAAC All-Academic selections. A 40-year coaching veteran, Pardalis came to

Manhattan after six seasons an assistant at Western Connecticut State University. He helped the Colonials win the 2007 ECAC Championship and advance to the NCAA Tournament in 2008. Also in 2008, he coached the Little East Conference Pitcher of the Year and four all-conference players.

Prior to his time at Western Connecticut State, Pardalis was an assistant coach at MAAC rival Marist for three seasons. He worked with the Red Foxes’ hitters and outfielders, while also handling duties in recruiting, film work and scheduling. In 2006, Marist posted a 33-13 overall record en route to the MAAC Championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance. That season, the Red Foxes ranked eighth nationally in home runs per game, belting 47 in 46 contests. Marist also ranked 19th nationally in slugging percentage (.458) and 21st in earned run average (2.52) in 2006. Four Red Foxes earned All-MAAC honors that season, including both the MAAC Player of the Year and MAAC Pitcher of the Year.

From 1992-2001, Pardalis was the head coach of the varsity softball team at New Fairfield High School in New Fairfield, Conn. New Fairfield won the 1999 Connecticut State Championship and produced six Division I softball players. Pardalis led

the Rebels to four straight division championships (1993-96) and twice earned conference Coach of the Year honors (1994-95).

He also guided three different club teams to the PONY Nationals. In 1997, he led the Connecticut Legacy to the state championship and a fifth-place finish at the PONY Nationals in the under-14 division. He also led the under-16 Connecticut Crush to Nationals in 1998, and the under-18 Connecticut Tradition to the 1999 PONY Nationals.

Pardalis spent 37 years teaching physical education and coaching in the Connecticut Public School system before retiring following the 2008-09 school year. He has also coached football, basketball and baseball during his career, and he was the varsity boy’s basketball coach at Danbury High School from 1996-2009. Pardalis spent time as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Western Connecticut State from 1992-96, helping the Colonials win the 1995 ECAC Championship and qualify for the 1996 NCAA Tournament.

A 1972 graduate of Saint Leo College, Pardalis earned a master’s degree from Western Connecticut State in 1978 and a degree in administration from Sacred Heart in 2002. He and his wife, Rosemary, have two children and two grandchildren.

BRIDGET HURLMAN

Bridget Hurlman enters her fourth season as an assistant coach for the Jaspers. She is also the assistant coach for the Manhattan volleyball team. A two-time All-MAAC selection at Marist, Hurlman served as team captain when the Red Foxes won the MAAC Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2006.

Hurlman earned Second Team All-MAAC honors following both the 2005 and 2006 campaigns. In 2005, she started every game at either catcher or designated player and posted a .331 batting average. Hurlman also led the Red Foxes with seven home runs, 33 RBIs and a .569 slugging percentage that season. As a senior in 2006, Hurlman drew a team-high 22 walks and posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. She also earned a place on the MAAC All-Tournament Team, as the Red Foxes won their first-ever MAAC Championship.

She began her coaching career as an assistant at SUNY Purchase in 2007. During her time at SUNY Purchase, she worked primarily with the pitchers and catchers, while assisting with offensive instruction. Hurlman was also involved in all other aspects of the program, including practice planning, budgeting, travel arrangements and recruiting.

Also a certified athletic trainer, Hurlman is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association. From September-December 2006, she worked as an athletic trainer at Walt Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex, where she provided medical care to athletes of all ages in a variety of sports. From August 2007-May 2009, she served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at St. John’s University, where she worked primarily with the women’s cross country and track and field teams,

as well as the men’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s soccer squads. Hurlman is currently employed at the Frozen Ropes Baseball/Softball Training Facility in Elmsford, N.Y., where she is an instructor and assists with administrative duties.

A three-time MAAC All-Academic selection, Hurlman graduated cum laude from Marist in 2006. She received a master’s degree in sports management from St. John’s in May 2012.

The daughter of Margaret and James Hurlman, she currently resides in Yonkers, N.Y.

2011: Selected to the MAAC All-Academic Team…Saw regular action at both middle infield positions, starting 18 games at shortstop and eight at second base…Tied for fourth on the squad with six doubles…Also scored nine runs…Scored the winning run in the Jaspers’ 6-4 win over Lafayette on March 18…Ripped a two-run double against Sacred Heart on March 19…Smashed a two-run double that proved to be the difference in a 6-4 victory in the second game of a doubleheader at Stony Brook on April 7…Notched a stolen base and eventually scored the only run of the game in a 1-0 victory over Rider in the opener of an April 30 twinbill.

With 10 institutions strongly bound by the sound principles of quality and integrity in academics and excellence in athletics, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference is in its 31st year of competition during the 2011-2012 academic year.

The MAAC was founded in 1980 by six charter members: the U.S. Military Academy, Fairfield University, Fordham University, Iona College, Manhattan College and Saint Peter’s College. Competition followed one year later in the fall of 1981 with members competing in the sports of men’s cross country and men’s soccer. On January 2, 1982, Army traveled to Iona for the first MAAC men’s basketball game and the MAAC story had begun.

Today, Conference members include: Canisius College, Fairfield University, Iona College, Loyola University Maryland, Manhattan College, Marist College, Niagara University, Rider University, Saint Peter’s College, and Siena College. In addition, associate members include the University of Detroit Mercy, Jacksonville University and Virginia Military Institute in men’s lacrosse. St. Francis (N.Y.) College, Villanova University, VMI and Wagner College are all associate members of the MAAC Women’s Water Polo League. Drake University, Robert Morris University and Sacred Heart University compete in women’s rowing, while the University at Albany, Boston University and the University of Hartford began competition in women’s golf in the spring of 2010. The MAAC will support 24 sports and championships during the 2011-2012 academic year.

The MAAC Basketball Championships move to Springfield’s MassMutual Center to host the 2012-2014 championships. By having an excellent working relationship with various facilities, the MAAC has been able to attract a number of NCAA Championship events. Most recently, the MAAC and Rider co-hosted the 2011 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. The MAAC, Canisius College and Niagara University successfully hosted the 2010 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship First and Second Rounds at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo, New York. All three parties hosted the event in 2004 and 2007. The MAAC and Rider University co-hosted the 2009 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship Regional at the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, N.J., after recording the third highest attendance figure for the women’s championship with the First and Second Rounds in 2006. The MAAC and Rider will work together to co-host the 2012 NCAA Rowing Championships at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, New Jersey.

MAAC ASSOCIATE SPORTSIn June of 1995, the MAAC continued to develop opportunities for student-

athletes as the conference announced the formation of the MAAC Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse Leagues. The men’s league began competition in the spring of 1996, while the women’s league commenced in the spring of 1997. The men’s league consists of four MAAC schools -- Canisius, Manhattan, Marist, and Siena – and three associate members – Detroit, Jacksonville and Virginia Military Institute. The women’s league consists of MAAC institutions Canisius, Fairfield, Iona, Manhattan, Marist, Niagara and Siena.

In 2002, the MAAC added the MAAC Women’s Water Polo League. The league is currently made up of three MAAC schools – Iona, Marist and Siena – as well as four associate members, St. Francis (N.Y.), Villanova, VMI and Wagner.

Sacred Heart started participating in MAAC Women’s Rowing in the spring of 2008. Drake University joined the league for the 2010 MAAC Championship, while Robert Morris began competition in the spring of 2011.

In the summer of 2009, the MAAC added three associate members – Albany, Boston University and Hartford – to women’s golf, with the programs starting competition against MAAC members Fairfield, Niagara and Siena in 2009-2010.

ACADEMICS AND ATHLETICS

The MAAC prides itself on the accomplishments of its student-athletes in the classroom, as well as on the field. Mary Beth Riley, a 1991 graduate of Canisius, was the first recipient of the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. In the fall of 1998, Erin Whalen, a member of the Iona women’s rowing team, was awarded one of the nation’s 32 Rhodes Scholarships for academic achievement and civic leadership. Jose Vargas, a Loyola student, was also awarded a Rhodes Scholarship in 1999.

First-class facilities are the rule with MAAC schools, as teams regularly play in top-notch arenas,

such as Madison Square Garden, the IZOD Center, HSBC Arena, Times Union Center, the Arena at Harbor Yard and the Sun National Bank Center. The other MAAC championships boast their share of outstanding locales as well, such as the Reverend Harold Ridley, S.J., Athletic Complex at Loyola, where the women’s soccer championship will be contested in the fall of 2011, and Joe Bruno Stadium in Troy, New York, home of the 2012 MAAC Baseball Championship. This year, the MAAC will take its men’s championship to Orlando, Florida, where it will conduct its post-season event at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The MAAC Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships will be held at Disney’s Magnolia Golf Course.

In the past several years, a number of the MAAC schools have also enjoyed success in NCAA Championships. MAAC schools have made a total of 77 NIT appearances and 47 NCAA appearances. In addition, Iona and Rider participated in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament, with the Gaels advancing to the championship game. The Manhattan women participated in the Women’s Basketball Invitational, reaching the semifinal round of the tournament. The MAAC currently possesses 13 automatic bids to NCAA Championships in men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s lacrosse, and women’s water polo. In 2007, the Marist women’s basketball team advanced to the Sweet 16 before falling to the eventual National Champion, the University of Tennessee. In the fall of 2009, the No. 11 Iona men’s cross country team finished tied for eighth place at the NCAA Championship race, extended the Gaels’ streak to eight straight Top 10 national finishes. Iona softball, Manhattan track, Manhattan baseball and Loyola lacrosse have also flourished on the national stage.

The MAAC has also been a leader in the forefront of technology, expanding the notoriety of the league into cyberspace. In 2007, the league reached an agreement with JumpTV, Inc., now NeuLion, Inc., to design the MAAC web page. MAACSports.com has been a great success, providing fans with up-to-date contest results, live and on-demand video and an online merchandise store. The MAAC, in conjunction with NeuLion, launched an iPhone app in February 2011. The league is looking to expand its offerings with Android and iPod apps, scheduled for release during the 2011-12 academic year.

The MAAC President for the 2011-2012 academic year is Rev. Jeffrey von Arx, S.J., the President of Fairfield University. The Vice-President is Dr. Eugene J. Cornacchia, Ph.D., the President of Saint Peter’s College. Jim Paquette, Director of Athletics at Loyola University Maryland, will chair the Committee on Athletic Administration, and Theresa Berg, Associate Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator at Niagara University will serve as Vice Chair.

METRO ATLANTIC ATHLETIC CONFERENCE


Brennan O’Donnell, Ph.D., is the 19th president of Man-hattan College, having assumed the responsibilities of the position July 1, 2009.

O’Donnell came to Manhattan after five years of service as the dean of Fordham College at Rose Hill, Fordham University. Before coming to New York, O’Donnell spent 17 years at Loyola College in Maryland (now Loyola University Maryland), where he served as a professor of English and, from 1999-2004, as director of the university-wide hon-ors program. An active scholar, his teaching and research interests focus mainly upon poetry, especially of the British Romantic period, and on religion and literature, particularly contemporary American Catholic writers. He has authored two books on the poetry of William Wordsworth and co-edited The Work of Andre Dubus, a collection of essays published as a double issue of Religion and the Arts. In ad-dition, O’Donnell has published articles, essays and reviews in some of the leading journals in his field. At Manhattan, he continues to hold a faculty appointment, as he did at Fordham and Loyola, as professor of English.

As the first president of the College not to be a member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, O’Donnell is tread-ing new ground at Manhattan College. He has experience in such transitions, however, as he was also the first layperson to serve as dean of Fordham College at Rose Hill. His publi-cations and lectures demonstrate a keen engagement in is-sues of faith and education, specifically Catholic higher edu-cation. From 1994–2000, he served as editor of the national

magazine Conversations on Jesuit Higher Education, and he was a member of the National Seminar on Jesuit Higher Education from 1993–2000. In addition, he is currently on the board of trustees at La Salle University and the Commis-sion on Independent Colleges and Universities (cIcu), and has served as a board member for the Lilly Fellows Program and for Collegium, a consortium of Catholic universities that strives to strengthen faculty understanding of and participa-tion in the mission of Catholic higher education.

A native of Pennsylvania’s Wyoming Valley, Dr. O’Donnell earned his B.A. with highest distinction and honors in English at The Pennsylvania State University in 1981, where he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He earned an M.A. and a Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in English and American literature and language. He is the recipient of numerous fellowships, grants, awards and honors.

O’Donnell is married to Angela O’Donnell (formerly Alaimo), a poet and writer who teaches at Fordham, where she serves as associate director of the Francis and Ann Cur-ran Center for American Catholic Studies. The couple has three sons: Charles (a graduate of Saint John’s University, Minnesota, and a teacher in the St. Paul, Minnesota, public schools), Patrick (a 2009 graduate of Columbia University, currently pursuing graduate studies), and Will (a graduate of Fordham).

Since his arrival back to Riverdale in May of 1988, Byrnes has presided over a renaissance period in Manhattan College athletics. During his tenure, the men’s and women’s basketball programs have earned eight NCAA Tournament bids (four women, four men). Additionally, the Jaspers have appeared in five postseason and preseason National Invitational Tournaments (NIT). Women’s soccer and men’s and women’s lacrosse began competition at the Division I level under Byrnes, and 14 different teams have won conference championships-men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor track, men’s and women’s outdoor track, men’s and women’s basket-ball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, volleyball, men’s tennis, softball and baseball. In addition, to date, 27 student-athletes have received All-America honors for both athletic and academic achievements.

Before returning to Manhattan, Byrnes spent 13 years with the Morrison-Knudsen Company, one of the largest engineering and construction firms in the nation.

A native of Garrison, New York, Byrnes earned his undergraduate degree in physical education with a minor in biology. He also holds an M.B.A. from City University in Seattle, Washington.

As an undergraduate, Byrnes was a member of the Jaspers’ club football team. Byrnes served as team captain and played both defensive tackle and offensive

end. He spent one season as an assistant coach and helped guide Manhattan to a 6-2 overall record in 1969.

Upon graduation, Byrnes began a teaching and coaching career at Queen of Peace High School in North Arlington, New Jersey. He also served as the school’s director of athletics from 1970-73. Under his leadership, Queen of Peace registered state tourna-ment appearances in baseball and basketball, while also capturing the Parochial “B” State Championship in football (1972).

In addition to his responsibilities at Manhattan, By-rnes served two stints (1997-99, 2004-06) as president of the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Basketball Associa-tion, at one time the sponsoring body of the NIT. He also served on the NCAA Championship Committee in 1999-2000. He is currently the chair of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Men’s Basketball Committee and the Committee on Athletic Admin-istration, as well as a member of the ECAC Officials Negotiating Committee. In recognition of his years of outstanding contributions to Jasper athletics, Byrnes was inducted into the Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004.

Byrnes resides in Croton-on-Hudson, New York, along with his wife, Rosemary. He is the father of five children: Bob, Carolyn (Manhattan ’97), Brian (Man-hattan ’99), Darren and Brigid.
