In 2009, the Manhattan College volleyball team was one in transition. Last season’s squad featured 10 newcomers and the program’s third different head coach in as many seasons: Mark Jones. As a result, the Lady Jaspers suffered from some predictable growing pains, and the young roster finished just 8-23 overall, including 3-15 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play.

Fortunately, most of the key names from the 2009 season are back in 2010, including Jones. And rather than the mostly inexperienced group he had in 2009, Jones will have a veteran team in 2010, as 13 of the 14 players on the roster have at least one season of collegiate volleyball under their belts. In addition to the consistency on the sidelines, the Lady Jaspers should also have a sense of familiarity on the court, with 10 letterwinners, including five starters, returning from last season’s squad.

“We needed this spring season, especially with such a young team” Jones said. “We had six players who were freshmen last year that got a chance to see a lot of playing time during the spring, which can only help.”

OUTSIDE HITTERSSeniors Diane Strutner and Jaci Rahey, the only four-year

players on this season’s roster, anchor the outside hitting corps. Strutner earned team MVP honors last season after leading the Lady Jaspers in both kills (315) and digs (403). A starter in each of her first three years, she notched her 1,000th career dig last season in the loss at Iona. Rahey became a full-time starter in 2009 and responded with her best season in a Manhattan uniform. One of just two Lady Jaspers to appear in all 117 sets last season, she placed second on the squad in kills (303) while also notching 100 digs for the first time in her career.

“I’m looking for them (Diane and Jaci) to be role models for this team,” Jones said. “If they can lead by example, it will help the coaching staff and we’ll be much better chemistry-wise. We need senior leadership to be successful.”

Fellow senior Aurore Kullak started at three different positions last season, her first at Manhattan after transferring from

Chattanooga, but she also missed 12 matches with a shoulder injury. When in the lineup, she was a valuable asset on both ends of the floor, tallying 207 digs to place fourth on the team. Now that she’s healthy, Kullak gives Jones a number of different lineup options because of her versatility.

Also in contention for a starting role is junior transfer Brittany DeGagne. A native of Penticton, B.C., DeGagne was the team’s leading scorer during both of her seasons at Garden City Community College in Kansas. Also in the mix at outside hitter are sophomores Alexa Lampasona and Keri Leigh Perrotto. Lampasona notched 17 kills in limited action last season, while Perrotto returns to provide depth on the outside after making the squad as a walk-on in 2009.

MIDDLE BLOCKERSPerhaps the biggest loss the 2010 edition of the Lady Jaspers

needs to overcome is that of four-year starting middle blocker Rita Welsh, who graduated as the second-leading blocker in program history. In her absence, big things are expected out of the middle from junior LaKell Havens, a transfer from Salt Lake Community College. Havens notched 116 blocks and averaged 1.98 kills per set en route to earning Second Team NJCAA All-Region honors last season. She should immediately step into the starting spot vacated by Welsh.

“I wanted to bring in somebody with a little more experience in the middle,” Jones said. “And LaKell has that experience of playing at a higher level. Coming in as a JUCO transfer, she also brings a level of maturity that I like.”

Havens will likely be joined in the starting lineup by sophomore

Maddie Heck, who was a starter for most of the 2009 season. Heck finished second on the squad with 52 blocks and fourth with 99 kills in 2009. Sophomore Kelsey Huntoon came through when called upon last season and is a quality option coming off the bench.

SETTERSAfter using three different starting setters during the 2009

campaign, Jones hopes to find some more stability at the most important position on the floor this season. Sophomore Jamie Collareta became the starter late in the 2009 season and ended up leading the team with 6.97 assists per set.

“The setter position is definitely up for grabs,” Jones said. “Jamie became the starter halfway through last season, and I expect her to be the starter. Others can challenge, but I expect her to pick up where she left off.”

Expected to challenge Collareta for the starting role is junior Jackie Aldrich, who joins the Lady Jaspers after two years at

Richard Stockton College in New Jersey. Playing in a 6-2 system (rather than Manhattan’s 5-1 alignment), Aldrich dished out 3.72 assists per set as Stockton won its second straight conference championship last season.

DEFENSIVE SPECIALISTS/LIBEROSThe defensive specialist/libero position should be one of the

team’s strengths in 2010. Sophomore Julie Bies immediately stepped in as the starting libero during her freshman campaign, playing in all 117 sets last season. Bies recorded double-digit digs 22 times in 2009, including the first 10 matches of her collegiate career. She ended up with an even 400 digs for the season, good for second on the team, while also notching 18 service aces.

“I’m really proud of Julie and what she was able to accomplish year as a freshman at an important position,” Jones said. “Others will want to compete for playing time at libero, but I expect her to be up to the challenge. It’s just a matter of who’s going to be the most consistent.”

Joining Bies in the back row is senior Jayne Timo. In her first season at Manhattan after two years at Suffolk County Community College, Timo finished fifth on the squad with 170 digs in 2009. Nikki Chamberlin, the only freshman on the roster, is a natural libero from San Diego, Calif. Chamberlin helped Torrey Pines High School reach the finals of the 2009 CIF state tournament. She also played for the San Diego Volleyball Club.

SCHEDULEJones has put together a challenging non-conference schedule

that should help the Lady Jaspers get ready for the MAAC campaign. Manhattan opens the season with a trip to California for the Cal Molten Classic, where the Lady Jaspers will play NCAA Tournament participant UC Santa Barbara and host California, which lost to eventual National Champion Penn State in the 2009 NCAA Tournament quarterfinals.

After returning to the East Coast, the Lady Jaspers play in tournaments at St. John’s and Bryant, as well as a non-conference match at Providence, before opening MAAC play at Rider on Sept. 18. Last season, Manhattan set a pair of NCAA records in its three-set win over the Broncs in New Jersey. The following day, the Lady Jaspers play their home opener against Saint Peter’s. Manhattan then plays its only non-conference home match against Lafayette on Sept. 22 before heading back on the road for MAAC showdowns with Fairfield and Iona.

Manhattan visits local rivals Columbia, Army and Fairleigh Dickinson before getting into the bulk of the MAAC schedule, which is highlighted by two separate three-match homestands. The Lady Jaspers host Loyola, Marist and Iona back-to-back-to-back in mid-October before wrapping up their home schedule against Siena (Oct. 31), Fairfield (Nov. 6) and Rider (Nov. 7). In all, Manhattan plays 10 matches in the friendly confines of Draddy Gymnasium before concluding the regular season at Saint Peter’s and Loyola on Nov. 13-14.

The MAAC Tournament will be held at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla., this season, meaning all 10 teams will qualify for the event, which takes place from Nov. 18-21. The winner of the MAAC Tournament receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.

“Knowing that everybody goes to the conference tournament gives us all a different perspective during the season,” Jones said. “Anything can happen. It’ll really come down to who’s playing the best at the end of the regular season. Everyone knows they have a chance to go to the NCAA Tournament, which is definitely exciting.”

MARK

JONESHEAD COACH • SECOND SEASON • WASHINGTON STATE '95

Mark Jones enters his first season as Manhattan’s head volleyball coach. A 13-year coaching veteran, Jones previously had

successful head coaching stints at William Woods University and Washington State University.

Jones comes to Riverdale most recently from the University of Maine, where he was the top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the past two seasons. Under his guidance, the Black Bears qualified for the America East Conference Tournament in 2008. Prior to his time at Maine, Jones spent two seasons as an assistant at Tennessee State University. The Tigers posted back-to-back 20-win seasons and won the Ohio Valley Conference Championship in 2005. Tennessee State went 26-6 against OVC opponents during his two seasons in Nashville.

Jones began his coaching career at his alma mater, Washington State, during the 1994-95 athletic season. He served as a volunteer assistant with the Cougars’ women’s program during the fall and was head coach of the men’s squad in the spring. The women’s team qualified for the NCAA Tournament and finished the year ranked in the Top 25 during each of Jones’ four seasons in Pullman. In 1996, the Cougars posted a 27-6 record and reached the regional finals of the NCAA Tournament. Washington State finished second in the Pac-10 that season and earned a year-end national ranking of No. 7.

The Washington State men’s club team went 99-22 during his four seasons at the helm. Jones’ teams went 46-4 in the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Volleyball Association, including back-to-back 13-0 campaigns in 1997-98. Jones led the Cougars to four straight PIVA championships and a third place finish in the 1998 National Collegiate Volleyball Championships.

After one season as the top assistant with Northwestern State’s women’s program in 1998, Jones moved on to William Woods University, where he was the top assistant with both the men’s and women’s programs in 1999-2000. He was named head coach of both programs in August 2000. The women’s team won at least 18 matches and finished third in the America Midwest Conference during each of his three seasons at the helm.

After going 13-13 during his first season as mentor of the Owls’ men’s team, Jones was named Mid-America Men’s Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference Coach of the Year in 2002. That season, he led William Woods to a 31-4 record and the NAIA National Championship. His 2003 squad finished the season ranked fifth in the nation with an 18-11 overall record. Overall, Jones went 62-28 with the William Woods men’s team and 57-49 with the women’s program.

A 1995 graduate of Washington State, Jones won four varsity letters as a member of the Cougars’ men’s volleyball team. He received master’s degrees from William Woods in 2001 and Tennessee State in 2007.

ASSISTANT COACH • FIRST SEASON • MARIST '06

Bridget Hurlman is in her first season as an assistant coach with the Lady Jaspers. She is also an assistant coach for the Manhattan softball team.

She played softball at MAAC rival Marist for four seasons, earning Second Team All-MAAC honors following both the 2005 and 2006 campaigns. In 2006, she earned a place on the MAAC All-Tournament Team, as the Red Foxes won their first-ever MAAC Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

Also a certified athletic trainer, Hurlman is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association. From September-December 2006, she worked as an athletic trainer at Walt Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex, where she provided medical care to athletes of all ages in a variety of sports. From

August 2007-May 2009, she served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at St. John’s University, where she worked primarily with the women’s cross country and track and field teams, as well as the men’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s soccer squads. Hurlman is currently employed at the Frozen Ropes Baseball/Softball Training Facility in Elmsford, N.Y., where she is an instructor and assists with administrative duties.

A three-time MAAC All-Academic selection in softball, Hurlman graduated cum laude from Marist in 2006. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in sports management from St. John’s.

The daughter of Margaret and James Hurlman, she currently resides in Yonkers, N.Y.

With 10 institutions strongly bound by the sound principles of quality and integrity in academics and excellence in athletics, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference is in its 30th year of competition during the 2010-2011 academic year.

The MAAC was founded in 1980 by six charter members: the U.S. Military Academy, Fairfield University, Fordham University, Iona College, Manhattan College and Saint Peter’s College. Competition followed one year later in the fall of 1981 with members competing in the sports of men’s cross country and men’s soccer. On January 2, 1982, Army traveled to Iona for the first MAAC men’s basket-ball game and the MAAC story had begun.

Today, Conference members include: Canisius College, Fairfield University, Iona College, Loyola Uni-versity Maryland, Manhattan College, Marist College, Niagara University, Rider University, Saint Peter’s College, and Siena College. In addition, associate members include the University of Detroit Mercy, Jacksonville University and Virginia Military Institute in men’s lacrosse. St. Francis (N.Y.) College, Villanova University and Wagner College are all associate members of the MAAC Women’s Water Polo League. Drake University, Robert Morris University and Sacred Heart University compete in women’s rowing, while the University at Albany, Boston University and the University of Hartford began competition in women’s golf in the spring of 2010. The MAAC will support 24 sports and championships during the 2010-2011 academic year.

The MAAC Basketball Championships return to the Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Conn. for 2011, with Springfield’s MassMutual Center preparing to host the 2012-2014 championships. By having an excel-lent working relationship with various facilities, the MAAC has been able to attract a number of NCAA Championship events. Most recently, the MAAC, Canisius College and Niagara University successfully hosted the 2010 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship First and Second Rounds at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo, New York. All three parties hosted the event in 2004 and 2007. The MAAC and Rider University co-hosted the 2009 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship Regional at the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, N.J., after recording the third highest attendance figure for the women’s championship with the First and Second Rounds in 2006. The MAAC and Rider will work together to co-host the 2011 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pa.

MAAC ASSOCIATE SPORTSIn June of 1995, the MAAC continued to develop opportunities for

student-athletes as the conference announced the formation of the MAAC Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse Leagues. The men’s league began competition in the spring of 1996, while the women’s league commenced in the spring of 1997. The men’s league consists of four MAAC schools -- Canisius, Manhattan, Marist, and Siena – and three associate members – Detroit Mercy, Jacksonville and Virginia Military Institute. The women’s league consists of MAAC institutions Canisius, Fairfield, Iona, Manhattan, Marist, Niagara and Siena.

In 2002, the MAAC added the MAAC Women’s Water Polo League. The league is made up of three MAAC schools – Iona, Marist and Siena – as well as three associate members, St. Francis (N.Y.), Villanova and Wagner.

Sacred Heart started participating in MAAC Women’s Rowing in the spring of 2008. Drake University joined the league for the 2010 MAAC

Championship, while Robert Mor-ris will begin competition in the spring of 2011.

In the summer of 2009, the MAAC added three associ-ate members – Albany, Boston University and Hartford – to women’s golf, with the programs starting competition against MAAC members Fairfield, Ni-agara and Siena in 2009-2010.

Academics and AthleticsThe MAAC prides itself on the

accomplishments of its student-athletes in the classroom, as well as on the field. Mary Beth Riley, a 1991 graduate of Canisius, was the first recipi-ent of the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. In the fall of 1998, Erin Whalen, a member of the Iona women’s rowing team, was awarded one of the nation’s 32 Rhodes Scholarships for academic achievement and civic leadership. Jose Vargas, a Loyola student, was also awarded a Rhodes Scholarship in 1999. First-class facilities are the

rule with MAAC schools, as teams regularly play in top-notch arenas, such as Madison Square Garden, the IZOD Center, HSBC Arena, Times Union Center, the Arena at Harbor Yard and Sovereign Bank Arena. The other MAAC championships boast their share of outstanding locales as well, such as the Reverend Harold Ridley, S.J., Athletic Complex at Loyola, where both the men’s and women’s soccer championships will be contested in the fall of 2010, and Waterfront Park in Trenton, home of the 2011 MAAC Baseball Championship. This year, the MAAC will take its volleyball championship to Orlando, Florida, where it will conduct its post-season event at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The MAAC Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships will be held at Disney’s Magnolia Golf Course.

In the past several years, a number of the MAAC schools have also enjoyed success in NCAA Championships. MAAC schools have made a total of 75 NIT appearances and 45 NCAA appearances. In addition, Fairfield represented the league last season in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament while the Fairfield women participated in the Women’s Basketball Invitational. The MAAC currently possesses 13 automatic bids to NCAA Championships in men’s and women’s basket-ball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s lacrosse, and women’s water polo. In 2007, the Marist women’s basketball team advanced to the Sweet 16 before falling to the eventual National Champion, the University of Tennessee. Last fall, the No. 11 Iona men’s cross country team fin-ished tied for eighth place at the NCAA Championship race, extended the Gaels’ streak to eight straight Top 10 national finishes. Canisius softball, Manhattan track, Manhattan and Marist baseball and Loyola soccer and lacrosse have also flourished on the national stage.

The MAAC has also been a leader in the forefront of technology, ex-panding the notoriety of the league into cyberspace. In 2007, the league reached an agreement with JumpTV, Inc. to sponsor the MAAC web page. Launched in November 1999, www.maacsports.com has been a great success, providing fans with up-to-date contest results, multimedia content and an online merchandise store.

The MAAC President for the 2010-2011 academic year is Rev. Jeffrey von Arx, S.J., the President of Fairfield University. The Vice-President is Dr. Eugene J. Cornacchia, Ph.D., the President of Saint Peter’s Col-lege. Ed Laughlin, Director of Athletics at Niagara University, will chair the Committee on Athletic Administration, and Karin Torchia, Associate Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator at Rider University will serve as Vice Chair.

Dr. Brennan O’Donnell is the 19th president of Manhattan College, having assumed the

responsibilities of the position July 1, 2009.Dr. O’Donnell comes to Manhattan from

Fordham College at Rose Hill, Fordham University’s oldest and largest school. As dean of Fordham College, he was the chief

academic officer of a College of Arts and Sciences enrolling about 3,200 students under a

faculty of more than 200.Before coming to New York, Dr. O’Donnell spent 17 years at Loyola

College in Maryland (now Loyola University Maryland), where he served as a professor of English and, from 1999-2004, as director of the university-wide Honors Program. An active scholar, his teaching and research interests focus mainly upon poetry, especially of the British Romantic period, and on religion and literature, particularly contemporary American Catholic writers. He has authored two books on the poetry of William Wordsworth and co-edited The Work of Andre Dubus, a collection of essays published as a double issue of Religion and the Arts. In addition, Dr. O’Donnell has published articles, essays and reviews in some of the leading journals in his field. At Manhattan, he will continue to hold a faculty appointment, as he had at Fordham and Loyola, as professor of English.

As the first president of the College not to be a member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, Dr. O’Donnell is treading new ground at

Manhattan College. He has experience in such transitions, however, as he was also the first layperson to serve as dean of Fordham College at Rose Hill. His publications and lectures demonstrate a keen engagement in issues of faith and education, specifically Catholic higher education. From 1994–2000, he served as editor of the national magazine Conversations on Jesuit Higher Education, and he was a member of the National Seminar on Jesuit Higher Education from 1993–2000. In addition, he has served as a board member for the Lilly Fellows Program and for Collegium, a consortium of Catholic universities that strives to strengthen faculty understanding of and participation in the mission of Catholic higher education.

A native of Pennsylvania’s Wyoming Valley, Dr. O’Donnell earned his B.A. with highest distinction and Honors in English at The Pennsylvania State University in 1981, where he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He earned an M.A. and a Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in English and American Literature and Language. He is the recipient of numerous fellowships, grants, awards and honors.

Dr. O’Donnell is married to Angela O’Donnell (formerly Alaimo), a poet and writer who teaches at Fordham, where she serves as associate director of the Francis and Ann Curran Center for American Catholic Studies. The couple has three sons: Charles (a graduate of Saint John’s University, Minnesota, and a teacher in the St. Paul, Minnesota, public schools), Patrick (a 2009 graduate of Columbia University, currently pursuing graduate studies in philosophy in Leuven, Belgium), and Will (a senior English major at Fordham).

A 1968 graduate of Manhattan College, Byrnes enters his 23rd year as director of athletics.

Since his arrival back to Riverdale in May of 1988, Byrnes has presided over a renaissance period in Manhattan College athletics. During his tenure, the men’s and

women’s basketball programs have earned eight NCAA Tournament bids (four women, four men). Additionally, the Jaspers have appeared in five postseason and preseason National Invitational Tournaments (NIT). Women’s soccer and men’s and women’s lacrosse began competition at the Division I level under Byrnes, and 14 different teams have won conference championships-men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor track, men’s and women’s outdoor track, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, volleyball, men’s tennis, softball and baseball. In addition, to date, 26 student-athletes have received All-America honors for both athletic and academic achievements.

Before returning to Manhattan, Byrnes spent 13 years with the Morrison-Knudsen Company, one of the largest engineering and construction firms in the nation.

A native of Garrison, New York, Byrnes earned his undergraduate degree in physical education with a minor in biology. He also holds an M.B.A. from City University in Seattle, Washington.

As an undergraduate, Byrnes was a member of the Jaspers’ club

football team. Byrnes served as team captain and played both defensive tackle and offensive end. He spent one season as an assistant coach and helped guide Manhattan to a 6-2 overall record in 1969.

Upon graduation, Byrnes began a teaching and coaching career at Queen of Peace High School in North Arlington, New Jersey. He also served as the school’s director of athletics from 1970-73. Under his leadership, Queen of Peace registered state tournament appearances in baseball and basketball, while also capturing the Parochial “B” State Championship in football (1972).

In addition to his responsibilities at Manhattan, Byrnes served two stints (1997-99, 2004-06) as president of the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Basketball Association, at one time the sponsoring body of the NIT. He also served on the NCAA Championship Committee in 1999-2000. He is currently the chair of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Men’s Basketball Committee and the Committee on Athletic Administration, as well as a member of the ECAC Officials Negotiating Committee. In recognition of his years of outstanding contributions to Jasper athletics, Byrnes was inducted into the Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004.

Byrnes resides in Croton-on-Hudson, New York, along with his wife, Rosemary. He is the father of five children: Bob, Carolyn (Manhattan ’97), Brian (Manhattan ’99), Darren and Brigid.
