At Allegheny, the “student” in student-ath-lete does more than merely precede “athlete” in the often-used phrase. At Allegheny, they are respected for wearing both hats, managing rig-orous academic challenges and meeting the de-mands of highly competitive athletic programs. This balancing act requires time management skills, careful planning and a strong sense of values, and it is accomplished year in and year out. Allegheny professors realize the special commitment required by athletics, and many faculty are among the most avid supporters of Gator teams. “Allegheny students epitomize the philosophy of Division III athletics. These are young men and women who combine the best elements of mind and body to achieve success in both the classroom and on the playing fields,” says professor of economics and faculty athletic representative Janine Sickafuse. Allegheny is especially proud to be a col-lege where students can compete and succeed in athletics and in other areas of campus life, while still excelling in the classroom. “What I realized about playing sports at Allegheny is how it complements what you do academically,” says 1991 Academic All-Ameri-can Molly Dietz. “Playing on the volleyball team taught me about time management and disci-pline.” The learning comes from the Allegheny philosophy of coaches being teachers. In the case of volleyball, head coach Bridget Sheehan believes academic achievement comes natu-rally. “Our players look at academics as being similar to the competitive environment they face on the court,” she says. “When you are working with a highly driven group, they are going to be that way in whatever they do. I recruit successful students.”

In a profession of change, Bridget Sheehan has been a mainstay at Allegheny College. Begin-ning her collegiate coaching career in 1986, this upcoming season will mark the start of Shee-han’s 25th year at the helm of the Gator volleyball program. In 2009 the Gators made a second consecutive trip to postseason play, finish-ing the year with a 16-18 overall record and a 10-6 mark in conference play. The consecutive NCAC Volleyball tournament appearances is the first time that the Gators have done so since their five-year postseason run from 1999-2003. The pro-gram as a whole has only missed making playoffs five times since the NCAC began in 1984. The 2010 Gators volleyball team will provide a unique challenge to the veteran head coach. A total of 13 freshmen will enter camp vy-ing for playing time in the rotation that has several spots to fill. The influx of youth will be met with the return of four letterwinners from a year ago including NCAC All-Conference Honorable Mention selection Jordan Leopold. Coach Sheehan acknowledges the challenges that a youth-laden team present, but remains confident and optimistic for the 2010 season. Leadership and team chemistry will be vital to how quickly the team comes together. Sheehan will be counting on the leadership of the returners to be strong and assist in transition of the incoming freshmen. Leadership on the team will not be restricted to the returners; any number of freshmen will have the opportunity to step into leadership roles both on and off the court. Sheehan points to an overall positivity, in terms of attitude and work ethic amongst the players in

order to develop the team chemistry needed to have success at the college level. With youth come peaks and valleys during the course of a season. The presence of Sheehan will help guide the team through the ups and downs with her experience and knowledge of the college game and atmosphere. Sheehan anticipates strengths of the team to be its work ethic and attitude. She also sees the youth of the team as an opportunity; a great opportunity for her freshmen to come in and make an impact early on in their playing careers. All of which will continue the winning tradition of the Gator volleyball program within the NCAC. Improving as a team on a day-to-day basis will be the primary focus of Sheehan and the Gators in 2010.

Allegheny Gators Since coming to Allegheny as the head volleyball coach in the fall of 1986, Bridget Sheehan has built one of the most successful NCAA Division III programs in the country, leading the Gators to regional and national recognition on multiple occasions. In her third decade at the school, Sheehan has high hopes of leading her team back to the top tier of the North Coast Athletic Conference and onto the national scene. Under the direction of the two time NCAC Coach of the Year (1987, 1990), the Gators have qualified for the NCAA Division III Tournament four times (1987, 1988, 1990, 1991) and compiled a remarkable 564-363 record, an average of nearly 24 wins per season. Allegheny has also been ranked among the nation’s top 20 four times and won four confer-

ence championships (1988-91). Perhaps Sheehan’s finest hour as Allegheny’s coach came in her second year at the helm when she led the 1987 squad to a 42-5 record, including a school-record 37 straight wins en route to the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance. For an encore, the 1988 team followed with a record of 44-9 and captured its first NCAC Champion-ship, which marked the beginning of a four-year reign at the top of the conference. Recent history has Sheehan’s squads producing achievement never before accomplished at the school. The 2003 team put to-gether an attack percentage of .317, ranking fifth in the nation at the season’s end and shattering the old school mark. That squad went on to set four team records, and setter Vicki Kajder was tabbed an All-American, the third national honor bestowed upon a player under Sheehan’s tutelage. In addition to national recognition, 66 all-conference certificates have been handed out to Gators, including three-time NCAC Player of the Year Molly Dietz (1989-91), and 1987 NCAC Co-Player of the Year Carol Frederick. In 2004, Allegheny had its first All-East Region Player of the Year selection in Rookie of the Year Traci Stoner, one of 13 all-region honorees during Sheehan’s tenure. Aside from coaching, Sheehan has been an active member in the volleyball community, serving as a member of several committees, including the American Volleyball Coaches As-sociation Division III National Ranking Committee, the NCAA Division III All-America Committee and the NCAA Regional Selection Committee. Currently, Sheehan serves on the AVCA Division III Head Coaches Committee. Prior to coming to Allegheny, Sheehan was a coach in the high school ranks, serving as an assistant volleyball coach at Maplewood High School from 1979-82 before she moved on to Cochranton High School where she served as a junior high basketball coach from 1980-84 and the head volleyball and basketball coach from 1984-86. A Slippery Rock graduate (‘77, ‘90), Sheehan was inducted into the Slippery Rock University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008. For The Rock, she was a four-year starter and captain in her senior season.

VolleyballAssistant Coach Jonathan Strub/2009 Stats

Jonathan Strub begins his first season on the Allegheny coaching staff after spending eight years as an assistant volleyball coach at Division II Gannon University. Most recently, Gannon carried a 22-10 record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1995. While at Gannon, Strub helped facilitate practices and drills, scouted opposing teams, helped develop game plans and was in charge of booking team travel. He also handled the video tape exchange, worked individually with players to improve their performance, and was in charge of the teams plyometric program. Strub began his coaching career as a student assistant for two seasons (2001-02) with the Golden Knights. During his first season as a full-time assistant in 2003, the Lady Knights posted a 21-9 record and advanced

to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) semifinals. In addition to volleyball, Strub served as the assistant softball coach for three seasons (2005-07) at Gannon University. In that span, the Knights went to the Division II NCAA Tournament three years in a row and won the GLIAC conference title in 2007. He also served as the head volleyball coach for the men’s club team from 2008-2010. This past season, Strub coached the Epic 17 Teal Junior Olympic Team and took the program from #59 ranking in the OVR (Ohio Valley Region) before the season started to #16 in the final ranking of the year. Strub graduated from Gannon University in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Manage-ment Information Systems and a minor in Athletic Coaching and Business.

Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of aca-demic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania ‹ Allegheny College, Denison University, Earlham College, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University and The College of Wooster ‹ the NCAC be-lieves that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards.

Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 276 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features champion-ship competition in 22 sports ‹ 11 for men and 11 for women. The 11 women’s sports are the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men¹s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart.

The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common al-legiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the edu-cational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference.

The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwav-ering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

The weight room houses contemporary fitness equipment, which includes the newest Galileo resistance machines and free weights, stairclimbers, stationary bicycles and other similar fitness machines. The sports forum encompasses most of the upper level of the Wise Center. It is primarily used for open recreation, intramurals and physical education classes. Its 27,000 feet of floor space is roughly three-quarters the size of a football field. A 210-meter, three-lane jogging track is suspended 14 feet above the perimeter of the sports forum. Also included in the Wise Center but not pictured: the Mellon Pool, three racquetball courts, an aerobics/dance room, the state-of-the-art athletic training room and all ath-letic department offices.

A complete athletic facility comparable to the best among colleges Allegheny’s size, the David V. Wise Sport & Fitness Center was opened in the 1997 volleyball season. The multi-million dollar building is the hub of all indoor athletic activities on campus. The 1,200-seat performance arena (right) is home to the basketball and volleyball teams. The Neo-Shok floor is used by several NBA teams, including the Miami Heat. The team locker rooms are located at court level and measure approximately 17-x-30 feet. Spectators enter the arena at street level on to a spacious concourse. The playing floor lies 15 feet below, creating a remarkable amphi-theater effect. The bleachers, which include three rows of chairback seating, can be elec-tronically compressed to create two full-length courts. The first Allegheny volleyball contest ever held at the Wise Center took place on Sep-tember 1, 1998. The Gators earned a come from behind 3-2 (12-15, 15-2, 11-15, 15-12, 15-9) victory over visiting Clarion. Bobbi Rud-dock paced the Blue and Gold with 34 assists and 14 digs. Wendy Turkovich totaled a team-best 23 digs that match.
