VOLLEYBALL • SEASON PREVIEW

The storyline for the 2009 Canisius College volleyball team is almost too good to be true – winning the program’s first MAAC Championship on your home floor in the Koessler Athletic Center .

But with that possibility comes a little bit of pressure – pressure the Golden Griffins recognize and embrace .

Canisius starts the 2009 season at the La Salle Invitational on Friday, facing Fairleigh Dickinson at 3 p .m ., the first of four matches in the season-opening tournament in Philadelphia . It’s the start of what the Griffs hope is a march to a MAAC Championship in the Koessler Athletic Center on November 22-23 .

“Last year we learned what it takes to get to a MAAC Championship and what it’s like to be there,” ninth-year head coach Cathy Hummel said . “It’s exciting to host the MAAC Championship this year and there is a little bit of added pressure because you want to qualify to be there .”

Canisius loses two starters (plus its libero) from a 2008 team that went 17-11 overall, 12-6 in the MAAC and advanced to a four-team MAAC Champi-onship for the first time since 1993 . While the loss of three key players from last year’s squad is a concern, it’s not one that has Hummel too worried .

“Our program is in the best state of affairs, player for player, since I’ve been here,” Hummel said . “My concern is the youth and inexperience . We are physically strong and talented, but have to keep our team emotionally in check because we have a young team .

“It’s not too much of a concern, but if you wanted to create one, that would be it — getting through the length of a college season .”

MIDDLE HITTERS/RIGHT SIDEIt’s not uncommon for a team to rely on its middle hitters, but it’s easy to look at the Griffs’ roster and personnel and know the middle of the court will get a lot of opportunities – opening up the rest of the court .

“We’ve emphasized that for nine years and now we have a good compliment of players to help those middles,” Hummel said . “When our ball control and passing is good – the middles will have success and our other players will benefit as well .

The leader of the middles is senior Michelle Godfrey, who has Hummel pointed out, could have a fairytale ending to her career . Godfrey came to Canisius as a walk-on and has developed into an all-league player, earning all-MAAC Second-Team honors as a junior in 2008 .

Godfrey led the team and ranked sixth in the MAAC in attack percentage ( .279) and blocks per set (1 .05), ranking third in the conference . As the only four-year senior on the team, the 6-foot-3 North Tonawanda, N .Y . native has the chance to put a stamp on this year’s team .

“This can be Michelle’s team . She’ll continue to show dominance above the net and we expect her offensive production and defensive production to be very good,” Hummel said . “She started as a walk-on, was all-conference last year and has the chance to have a great end to her career .”

Sophomore Layne Adams served as the No . 2 middle hitter for the Griffs this year and is shifting over to the right side . The position move for Adams started in the spring as the depth among the front line for the Griffs allowed the coaching staff to move the 6-foot, Newtown, Pa . native .

Adams averaged 0 .72 blocks per game last year, posting at least three blocks

in 16 matches and also had at least five kills in 19 matches during the 2008 campaign .

“Layne has embraced the position move and is going to be our starting right side, “ Hummel said . “She gives us the versatility of a quicker offense on the right side and a formi-dable block .”

Freshman Samantha Good will start as the secondary option middle hitter this season . The Rochester, N .Y . native was a three-time Team MVP and earned all-County First-Team honors on three separate occasions .

“Sam is the most explo-sive, fastest, athletic middle that we’ve seen in our pro-gram,” Hummel said . “We expect her to compliment Michelle with her style of play and continue our middle-focused offense .”

Junior Jasmine Brennan will fill in along the front line . She has played in the middle the past two years and has been working to be an option on the right side as well .

“Jasmine will be a role player, used on the right side and middle because of her ability to hit quick balls and be another strong right side block,” Hummel said .

OUTSIDE HITTERSThe area where Canisius is hit the most by graduation is at the outside hitter position, with Morgan Ammons, Nicole Fafard and Brittany Gerde moving on from Canisius . The Griffs will have two main options on the outside in junior Renee Lettow and sophomore Danielle Brawn .

Lettow played extremely well down the stretch when Ammons was suffer-ing from an injury . The Lindenhurst, N .Y . native averaged 3 .2 kills per set during the final 11 matches and raised her attack percentage by more than 40 points . She’ll be the number one option on the outside and has accepted that role .

“Renee is returning for her third year and having the experience from last season, she is driven to get to the conference championship and give her team a chance to win it at home,” Hummel said . “We expect nothing less from last year, see her being a leader as she will be playing all around the court .”

Brawn also took on more of an active role late in the season, starting seven of the final nine matches in the 2008 season . She was one the team’s top servers throughout her entire freshman campaign and has benefited greatly from offseason training .

“Danielle came back stronger, more confident and playing at the highest

Sophomore Layne Adams

level we’ve seen . Last year her weakest aspect was physical, but now the game has slowed down for her,” Hummel said . “She was a strong server last year as a freshman . With offseason workouts and preseason, she is where she needs to be and that’s giving her confidence .”

Freshman Emily Elek suffered an injury during the summer and will miss the entire 2009 season . Sophomore Joanna Burt is another op-tion off the bench for the Griffs .

“Joanna came back in stronger shape and her execution is getting bet-ter,” Hummel said .

DEFENSE/SETTERThe Griffs graduated one player from the back row in Sarah Podlesh, who served as the libero during the 2008 season .

Entering that role is freshman Allyson Severyn, who comes to Canisius after playing at St . Mary’s in Lancaster . The three-time all-Western New York First-Team selection won three state titles and has claimed the starting libero role during fall camp .

“Ally is one of our most athletic players and has the chance to be one of the best defensive players we’ve had,” Hummel said . “She’s as skilled in passing as she is defensively . I’m confident and excited in her being our starting libero .”

Two other Griffs will rotate in the back row in senior Kaela Glenn and sopho-more Carley Youngman . Glenn is in her second year at Canisius after two years at the University of Tampa and also serves as the team’s backup setter . She averaged 1 .51 digs per set last year while Youngman averaged 1 .77 digs per set .

“Kaela is having her best campaign and we expect her to show senior leadership on and off the court . She will be a contributor on the back row,” Hummel said . “Carley is always one of our hardest workers . She will be given more of a role in depth on the court and will be relied upon as a defensive player in the rotation

The fourth player in the Canisius back row is Emily Carpenter, who was a late addi-tion to the program during the summer months .

“Emily made a late decision to be a part of the Golden Griffin volleyball program . She’ll work in practice to push our defenders and right side players,” Hummel said .

The Griffs’ starting setter is sophomore Janelle Davis, who set a program-record with four MAAC Rookie of the Week awards in 2008 . She finished second in the Canisius record books for assists by a fresh-man (979) and is the only returning Golden Griffin to have played in all 113 sets last season .

“After a successful freshman year as our starting setter, Janelle is more confident and more physical . During preseason she is exponentially

better than she was last year,” Hummel said . “She will benefit the most from assistant coach Stephanie Jansma .

“Our offense is more diverse and quicker than it has been . The confi-dence Janelle gained during her freshman year has carried over to this season .”

OUTLOOKEarning the second MAAC Coach of the Year award in her career last season (Hummel also won the award in 2003), Hummel has built this program to a consistent level in the MAAC, being recognized as a pro-gram in the top half of the conference .

“During my previous eight years, it’s been a long journey to get this program to the level where we wanted it,” Hummel said . “We’ve had success for the past three years and can legitimately be known as a top-four team in the MAAC .

She’s joined on the sidelines by third-year assistant coach Randy Syra-cuse and first-year assistant Stephanie Jansma, who comes to Canisius after a four-year career at the University of North Carolina . Hummel also pointed out the significance of her athletic trainer, Melissa Do-nato, in being the “most important part of keeping our team healthy .”

Canisius will play on the road during the opening three weekends to develop a mentality away from home . The Griffs were 9-0 at home in conference matches last season and want to gain confidence early in the season .

“With a young team, the non-conference schedule will challenge us emotionally and physically . We’re on the road by design,” Hummel said . “We look to have a winning non-conference season, but mainly want to get confidence and prepare for a run at postseason .”

Canisius will find out quickly how it stands against the upper-echelon of the MAAC as the Griffs host Iona (tied for No . 3 in the MAAC preseason poll with Canisius) and Fairfield (co-preseason No . 1) on the opening weekend of the conference sched-ule . The Griffs will play five of seven conference matches at home from Oct . 15 (against Niagara) to Nov . 1 .

“The MAAC schedule played out as best we could – getting two of the top four teams at home on the first weekend,” Hummel said . “There are no easy wins in conference games and can be some

tight losses . It’s important to take it one match at a time .”

While keeping that mentality of one match at a time, the Griffs know 14 conference wins can make a team breathe easy in hoping to qualify for the four-team MAAC Championship .

A MAAC Championship the Griffs are hosting .

“What better way to get your first conference championship than to win it at home,” Hummel said .

Cathy Hummel enters her ninth season at the helm of the Canisius College volleyball team and is the program’s winningest coach with 101 career victories . During the past three seasons, Canisius has a 50-38 overall record ( .568), which is the best three-year stretch in program history . The Golden Griffins have recorded 36 victories against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponents as Canisius is one of three programs

in the conference to post double-digit victories in league play in each of the last three seasons .

Hummel earned the second MAAC Coach of the Year award of her career following the 2008 season when she led the Golden Griffins to a 17-11 overall record and 12-6 record in the MAAC, qualifying for a four-team MAAC Tournament for the first time since 1993 . Canisius played in the semifinals of the MAAC Championship for the second time in three seasons .

In 2006, Hummel helped lead the Griffs to a school record 22 wins, with 14 of those victories coming against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponents . She also guided the Blue and Gold to the team’s first appearance in the MAAC Volleyball Championship semifinal round since 1993 .

Hummel became the second coach in program history to be honored as the MAAC’s Coach of the Year after the Blue and Gold posted a 16-13 record in 2003, the program’s first winning season in 10 years .

Hummel has recruited a number of players to Canisius who have been honored by the league for their play on the floor and their work in the classroom, with 10 all-league selections, two MAAC All-Tournament pick, six preseason All-MAAC honorees, as well as four Defensive Players of the Year and a total of 30 MAAC All-Academic selections .

Hummel was named the 10th head coach in program history March 29, 2001, after serving as an assistant coach at the University at Buffalo . Her coaching career began in 1995 as assistant coach at Division II Dowling College in Oakdale, N .Y . After consecutive NCAA appearances in 1995 and 1996 with the Golden Lions, she joined the Buffalo staff in 1997 and aided in the Bulls’ progression into the Mid-American Conference .

A 1991 graduate of Hofstra University, Hummel was named Most Valuable Player at the ECAC Championships in 1988 and 1990 . Prior to playing at Hofstra, Hummel attended James Madison University for two seasons and was named the Colonial Athletic Conference MVP in 1987 . She was selected to the Wall of Fame at James Madison University in 2000 .

Hummel served as a head coach for the Cheetah Volleyball program from 1995-2003 . She won two gold medals at the 2003 Empire State Games in Buffalo, one as a coach and one as a participant . Hummel coached the Western scholastic team to a top finish, then went on to help the Western open squad bring home the tournament’s title as a player . She also accomplished this feat at the 2001 Empire State Games as well .

Cathy is married to Todd Hummel, the head coach of the Canisius College golf team . They reside in North Tonawanda with their son Jaxon and daughter Jordan .

Academic Services Canisius College Academic Services provides academic, personal and career support programs that foster the total development for the student-athletes. A comprehensive program on life skills provides student-athletes with educational experiences. Service programs preparing students for the demands of a well-balanced lifestyle are also provided. Academic Services for Student-Athletes offers the guidance and direction needed to prepare student-athletes for success beyond graduation.

Academic Advisor for Athletics ServicesThe Academic Advisor for Athletics provides the following support services to best serve the student-athletes at Canisius:

• Provide effective academic advising; conduct individual advising appointments with student-athletes who have concerns abut their major choice, progress toward graduation, grades, or any other aspects that may impede their success toward graduation and NCAA eligibility.

• Pay particular attention to the “at-risk” student-athletes and students who have not yet chosen a major course of study.

• Schedule meetings with designated student-athletes to assist in the monitoring of academic progress.

• Assist student-athletes with the development of academic recovery plans.

• Develop travel contracts for student-athletes to share with their course instructors.

• Provide assistant with scholarship and award applications.

Study Hall/ Tutorial ProgramIn order to assist student-athletes in achieving optimal academic performance, the Athletic Department provides a Study Hall Program. Study hall is open to all student-athletes and is an opportunity to do academic work at consistent time in a quiet place where tutors are available to answer questions and concerns.

Study hall is to be used for course work only. A total of six hours each week are required for all first semester freshmen and first semester transfers.

Tutoring Services The College offers free tutoring to all Canisius College students. If you have any questions regarding a tutor, or need assistance setting up a time to meet with someone from the College’s Tutorial Program, contact Danielle LaMarre, Academic Advisor for Athletics.

Department of AthleticsWhat is a Griffin?

The Griffin is a mythical creature of supposed gigantic size that has the head, forelegs and wings of an eagle and the hindquarters, tail and ears of a lion. They are well known for their speed, ability to fly and having eyes like an eagle as well as the strength and courage of a lion. Griffins have been known for centuries as symbols of strength and vigilance, have been called “The Hounds of Zeus” in Greek mythology and are said to have mastery of both the land and sky. They are thought to be from India, where the natives of the land made their talons and claws into drinking cups because the talon of a Griffin was said to detect poison in a liquid. Griffins would find gold in the mountains and line their nests with it and as a result, were forced to become great guardians of the nests to keep the hunters away. According to Charles A. Brady in Canisius College The First Hundred Years, “Though the problems of when and where the Griffin began his reign as King Herald of the Canisius College of Arms are not easily settled, the whence is simple to establish. Our Griffin flew to us from the prow of LaSalle’s lost Griffon, the Flying Dutchman of the Great Lakes, which disappeared after making a safe voyage from the Niagara River to the Strait of Detroit. LaSalle’s ill-fated caravel, the first ship ever built on America’s inland seas, with its 45 tons and five cannons, had its beakhead adorned ‘with a flying Griffin, and an eagle above it,’ in honor of the two heraldic beasts on the armorial bearing of the great Frontenac.” The Griffin became the symbol for Canisius athletics in the mid-1930s. Steve Weller wrote in The Buffalo News Jan. 22, 1962, “You can have your Chihuahuas, Piranhas, Horned Frogs and Iguanas. The best all-around athletic mascot in business today has to be the beast adopted by Canisius College – the Golden Griffin.”
