WOMEN’S LAX • SEASON PREVIEW

Every season, the Canisius College women’s lacrosse team looks to accomplish one ultimate goal - to win a MAAC Championship. However, in 2009 a string of unfortunate and unlucky injuries derailed the Golden Griffins’ championship hopes.

The 2010 season brings a fresh start for the Griffs and with a healthy team, Canisius once again envisions a season-ending run that results in a NCAA Tournament trip.

“Our goal every season is to win a MAAC Championship and earn an invitation to the NCAA Tournament,” said Canisius head coach Scott Teeter. “I feel like anything short of that is an unsuccessful season in my eyes.”

Despite losing 100 goals from last year’s team to graduation - nearly half of the team’s 205-goal total - Teeter has reasons to believe that this year’s squad will be able to reach its goal this season.

“It is definitely a challenge to get the 100 goals back that we graduated but the biggest obstacle that we face is staying healthy for the entire year,” Teeter said. “Despite a number of injuries last season, we still finished second in the MAAC and were a couple minutes away from reaching the conference championship. A number of young players received valuable playing time as a result and we hope that results in a experienced club this season that takes our program to the next step. We have more all-conference players returning than in any other season. So, I think that we are going to have a really successful year.”

A very deep and talented team returns this year as Canisius welcomes back 16 letterwinners and nine starters from last season’s club that qualified for the MAAC Tournament in back-to-back seasons for the first time in school history. Seven newcomers will also join the team in 2010 to add to an already talented squad.

“We are very strong in three areas this season,” Teeter said. “First, we are very deep and healthy in goal right now. Second, we have a real veteran senior-laden defense. Finally, we have a lot depth in numbers and talent in our midfield.”

GoaltendersThe goaltending is a position of strength for the 2010 season with All-MAAC honoree Allison Daley returning for her junior year.

Daley fought through injuries during her sophomore campaign to earn second-team All-MAAC accolades. With Daley back to being healthy, Teeter looks for her to anchor a strong defensive unit in 2010.

“A big key for us this year is having a healthy Allison Daley,” Teeter said. “Last year, she played with a really difficult injury but really showed her team commitment by playing through it. Her communication and her drive and will to win is contagious.”

More important for the Griffs is adding depth at the position with the addition of freshman Gina Molfetta.

“Gina had a very good fall,” Teeter said. “She got a lot of time in the crease to really adjust to the Division I level and we are really comfortable with either Allison or Gina in net.”

DefenseAnchoring the defense in front of Daley and Molfetta are four seniors. Returning starters Alyson Brown, Marissa Brown, Brett Poissant and Alison Rusak are all back and look to end their careers in style with a MAAC Championship.

“The strength of this year’s team is our defense,” Teeter said. “We have four key seniors leading the way that have started for us since their freshman year. They know our systems and they just need to execute them consistently and we will be very strong back there. The four of them are great leaders and our captains.”

Marissa Brown, Poissant and Rusak all earned second-team All-MAAC honors as juniors. Brown finished third in the country last season with 2.72 caused turnovers per game, in addition to a team-best 50 ground balls. She also recorded 20 points and ranked second on the team with 41 draw controls.

Poissant recorded 19 points, 25 draw controls, 24 ground balls and 14 caused turnovers with Rusak adding 24 ground balls and 18 caused turnovers. Alyson Brown rounded out the unit with 16 ground balls and eight caused turnovers.

“Marissa Brown brings the intensity level that we need back there,” Teeter said. “Alison Rusak is the true heart and soul of our defense and leads by example. Alyson Brown gives us size and intelligence on our defense, while Brett will play more on defense this year where she can really excel at.”

Sophomore Meagan Hurley also returns on the back line and is coming off a tremendous fall season. Last year, Hurley appeared in seven games. Senior Kathleen DiPasquale and junior Mary Butlak join the team in 2010 and will add depth at the position.

MidfieldA deep midfield unit will feature a number of talented players that will need to replace the production left by Ashley Gray and Chelsea Martinez. The duo combined for 95 goals last season, while Martinez also recorded a school-record 62 draw controls in 2009.

“Our midfield is probably the deepest it has ever been this season,” Teeter said. “All of our upperclassmen got valuable minutes last year. We are losing Ashley and Chelsea but I think this season, we will be a more balanced team. We will be more versatile and could have six players with 20-plus goals and draw controls.”

Junior Jackie Loson and sophomores Rachel Brand, Megan Oosting and Theresa Walton will anchor the unit and play on both ends of the field this season.

Loson, who played primarily on defense last season, earned second-team All-MAAC honors in 2009, posting seven goals, 37 ground balls and 14 caused turnovers. Oosting led all freshmen last season with 16 points and 11 goals, while Brand was close behind at 15 points and 10 scores. Walton, who frequently drew the opponent’s top offensive player on defense, also netted 10 goals.

“Our goal scoring should be more spread out with those four players,” Teeter said. “We will have more balance and it should keep us fresher to played a high-tempo offense.”

Kaitlyn Black adds depth at the midfield position. As a sophomore, Black played in 13 games with one starting assignment. Freshmen Kate Gosson and Lindsey Morgan will also see valuable playing time as rookies.

AttackThe attacking unit will benefit the most by a healthy team in 2010. Despite losing 100 goals of offense last season, a group compromising of juniors Ashley Curtis, Taylor Gray, Brianne Laffey and Carly Quinn has the potential to quickly fill the void.

Last season, Gray, Laffey and Quinn all missed a large amount of time due to injuries but along with Curtis, each has shown a great amount of promise.

“When you lose two 40-goal scorers, it tends to be a concern,” Teeter said. “With the group of players we have coming back on attack, if healthy, we know that they can come in and not miss a beat.”

As a rookie last season, Curtis finished third on the team behind Ashley Gray and Chelsea Martinez with 32 points, recording 19 goals and 13 assists. Curtis will fill a larger role this season and could become the leader of the unit.

“We are in search for a true leader on attack this season,” Teeter said. “Ashley Curtis has the potential to be that person and she will get that opportunity to do so. We expect good things out of her this season.”

In just nine games last season, Laffey finished fourth on the team with 28 points, registering nine goals and 19 assists. Gray played the final 10 contests of the season and recorded 19 points, three goals and 16 helpers. The two, along with freshman Abbie Gowen, will anchor the unit behind the net.

Quinn, sophomore Kristy Wilensky and freshman Meghan McGunigle round out the unit. As a rookie in 2008, Quinn totaled 15 points, seven goals and eight assists. Wilensky played in 12 games last season, scoring two goals.

ScheduleThe 2010 schedule is highlighted by nine home games, including a pair of games against teams that finished the 2009 campaign nationally ranked in Ohio State and Fairfield.

The Griffs opens the season on Feb. 13 at Longwood and will also play at Boston College and Connecticut before returning home for a March 6 contest against Robert Morris. In addition to hosting the nationally-ranked Buckeyes, the Griffs will also welcome Binghamton, St. Bonaventure, Detroit and Lehigh to the Demske Sports Complex in non-conference action, while traveling to play Albany and Duquesne.

“Our schedule is set up to challenge us in our non-conference season and to help us prepare for our MAAC games,” Teeter said. “We will need to be strong right from the beginning in MAAC games with two key contests at home to start things off.”

The conference season will be challenging right from the start, hosting the last two MAAC champions in Fairfield and Marist. Canisius will also host Niagara and play at Siena, Iona and Manhattan in conference action.

The top four teams during the MAAC regular season qualify for the conference’s postseason championship. Marist will host the 2010 Championship on April 30 and May 2.

Alison Rusak has started all 52 games during her career and earned second-team all-conference honors in 2009.

Ashley Curtis is the top returning scorer this season, posting 32 points and 19 goals in 2009.

Jackie Loson collected 37 ground balls and scored seven goals last season.

WOMEN’S LAX • COACH TEETER

The longest tenured head coach in the MAAC, Scott Teeter is in his eighth season leading the Canisius College women’s lacrosse team. Teeter has won 44 games since taking the reins of the Golden Griffin program, the second-most wins by a MAAC coach during that period.

In December 2009, Teeter added coaching responsibilities as the Canadian Under-19 National Team Head Coach and will guide his native country at the 2011 World Championship in Hannover, Germany.

Teeter has taken a team that only won 11 games and two conference matches before his arrival to new heights. In the last five seasons, the Griffs have won 43 games - no conference coach has won more matches - and reached the MAAC Tournament in 2006, 2008 and 2009, including a trip to the championship in 2006.

The 2005 MAAC Coach of the Year has built the program through recruiting and a strong leadership. Teeter has recruited and coached two players who competed in the most recent Women’s Lacrosse World Cup. He has also mentored 20 players to earn All-MAAC accolades, including a school-record seven selections in 2009.

Teeter has also guided three Griffs to Player of the Year accolades. Elise Crawford and Alana Chan were named MAAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2004 and 2005, respectively, while Whitney Card picked up MAAC Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2006.

Teeter was named the league’s Coach of the Year in just his third season after leading the Griffs to an eight-win improvement in 2005. He followed that year up with a school-record 12 wins, including six against MAAC foes, en route to the MAAC Championship.

After a one-year absence from the MAAC Championship, Teeter led the Griffs back to the tournament in 2008. Four Griffs were selected to the All-MAAC First Team that season, the most of any school in the conference. In 2009, Canisius matched its best regular-season finish by placing second in the conference standings.

Before coming to Canisius, Teeter served as an assistant women’s lacrosse coach at Buffalo State College in 2002, where he helped guide the program to its best finish ever at 5-6. Prior to his work at Buffalo State, he served as a student-assistant coach and team manager for the Canisius women’s lacrosse team for four years. He helped with instruction during practices and also assisted with game-day operations.

Teeter was a four-year letterwinner for the Canisius College ice hockey team, graduating from the school in 2002. He played field lacrosse for his high school in Shelburne, Ontario, while also playing box lacrosse for the Orangeville Northmen in Western Ontario.

Teeter graduated from Canisius with a degree in physical education in 2002 and earned his master’s degree in physical education with a concentration in sport psychology and coaching from Canisius in 2004.

Teeter and his wife, Jennifer, reside in Lakeview.

Ashley Wood is in her first season as assistant coach with the Canisius College women’s lacrosse program.

A two-time All-Atlantic 10 honoree, Wood graduated from Duquesne ranked fourth in the school’s record book with 139 career goals, seventh with 157 career points, third with 111 caused turnovers and eighth with 96 draw controls.

The 2009 Atlantic 10 Midfielder of the Year and second-team regional All-American, Wood set career highs with 56 points, 54 goals, 34 draw controls, 29 caused turnovers and 29 ground balls during her senior season. She led the conference with 1.71 caused turnovers per game and finished second with 3.18 goals per game.

Wood also participated in the US Lacrosse Women’s Division National Tournament as a defender, becoming one of 64 players to advance to the second round of tryouts.

Wood graduated from Duquesne with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. She will pursue her master’s in sport administration at Canisius.

Ashley WoodAssistant Coach • First Season • Duquesne ‘09

Andy Smith, a 1989 graduate of Canisius College, serves as the school’s head athletic trainer. Smith returned to Canisius in August 1996 after spending six years as an assistant athletic trainer at the United States Military Academy in West Point, N.Y. He also spent one year as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at the University of Illinois, where he received a master’s degree in kinesiology/athletic training in 1990.

As the head athletic trainer at Canisius, Smith oversees coverage for all 16 Canisius teams, working directly with the cross country and women’s lacrosse programs. He also administers and oversees the student-athlete accident insurance and NCAA and Canisius College Drug Testing programs. The western New York native also serves as an adjunct professor for athletic training curriculums through the Joint Review Committee on Athletic Training. His certifications include BOC Certification, Clinical Instructor Educator and National Safety Council Instructor of CPR, First Aid and AED.

Smith has offered a variety of regional and national presentations on several topics in sports medicine. He has also been involved with the United States Olympic Committee Sports Medicine Team and was a volunteer athletic trainer at the United States Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, N.Y. He worked the 1999 Summer World University Games in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, and helped coordinate athletic training services at the 2004 and 2007 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship First and Second Rounds in Buffalo. Smith has served in numerous capacities within the New York State Athletic Trainers Association (NYSATA), including treasurer, regional representative, webmaster and president from 2002-04, where he represented nearly 1,300 certified and student athletic trainers statewide. He was honored by the NYSATA with the Thomas J. Sheehan Sr., Award for outstanding service to the profession. He recently served as a member of the NATA’s Inter-Association Task Force on “Recomended Guidelines on How to Prepare for and Manhage Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) During High School and College Athletic Practices and Competitions,” which has been published in numerous journals.

Smith lives in Eggertsville, N.Y., with his wife, Carol, and their children, Grant and Ava.

Andy SmithAthletic Trainer • 14th Season • Canisius ‘89

Jon Rowan enters his second year as the head strength and conditioning coach for the Canisius College athletic department, joining the Golden Griffins in September 2008.

Rowan came to Canisius after serving as the head strength and conditioning coach at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for the past 10 years. At RPI, he was responsible for designing, teaching and implementing year-long training and conditioning for the Engineers’ 23 varsity sports programs while also working with various faculty, staff and students. He was the supervisor and fitness educator for a 30-person student staff and also assisted with the development for the school’s weight room and strength and conditioning equipment.

Rowan has served as a consultant for player performance for the Albany Conquest, an arena football team that competes in the AFL2. In addition to his strength and conditioning duties at RPI, Rowan spent five seasons as a defensive backs coach for

the school’s football program. He was also an assistant football coach at Methodist College in Fayetteville, N.C., and at West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, W.Va.

A 1994 graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College, Rowan has certifications with the National Strength and Conditioning Association and he is an IFA Certified Sports Nutritionist and an IFA Certified Senior Fitness Instructor.

Highlights Under Head Coach Scott Teeter• Won 43 games in the last five years after totaling

only 11 victories in the first seven seasons of the program. No coach in the MAAC has won more games in the last five seasons than Teeter.

• Earned the first three trips to the MAAC Tournament in the program’s history, including back-to-back invitations in 2008 and 2009.

• 20 Players have earned All-MAAC accolades, including a school-record seven selections last season.

• Three student-athletes have been honored with Player of the Year honors. Elise Crawford and Alana Chan earned Defensive Player of the Year accolades in 2004 and 2005, while Whitney Card was named the MAAC Offensive Player of the Year in 2006.

Academic Advisor for Athletics ServicesThe Academic Advisor for Athletics provides the following support services to best serve the student-athletes at Canisius:

• Provide effective academic advising; conduct individual advising appointments with student-athletes who have concerns abut their major choice, progress toward graduation, grades, or any other aspects that may impede their success toward graduation and NCAA eligibility.

• Pay particular attention to the “at-risk” student-athletes and students who have not yet chosen a major course of study.

• Schedule meetings with designated student-athletes to assist in the monitoring of academic progress.

• Assist student-athletes with the development of academic recovery plans.

• Develop travel contracts for student-athletes to share with their course instructors.

• Provide assistant with scholarship and award applications.

Study Hall/ Tutorial ProgramIn order to assist student-athletes in achieving optimal academic performance, the Athletic Department provides a Study Hall Program. Study hall is open to all student-athletes and is an opportunity to do academic work at consistent time in a quiet place where tutors are available to answer questions and concerns.

Study hall is to be used for course work only. A total of six hours each week are required for all first semester freshmen and first semester transfers.

Tradition of Excellence2008-09 Canisius Athletics Highlights• Natalia Tarasova of the synchronized

swimming team won the national championship in the solo event. As a team, Canisius finished third at U.S. Collegiate National Championship.

• The Canisius softball team captured its 12th MAAC Championship since 1990 to advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

• The women’s basketball team won a school-record 24 games and earned its second postseason invitation in the program’s history with a trip to the Women’s NIT.

• Three Griffs were drafted after graduating from Canisius. Matt Friedman of the men’s lacrosse team was taken by the Buffalo Bandits in the sixth round of the NLL Draft, while Kevin Mahoney and Kevin Mailloux were selected in the MLB Draft.

• Two former Griffs competed in the Women’s Lacrosse World Cup.

• Three Canisius coaches were named the MAAC Coach of the Year.

Department of AthleticsWhat is a Griffin?

The Griffin is a mythical creature of supposed gigantic size that has the head, forelegs and wings of an eagle and the hindquarters, tail and ears of a lion. They are well known for their speed, ability to fly and having eyes like an eagle as well as the strength and courage of a lion. Griffins have been known for centuries as symbols of strength and vigilance, have been called “The Hounds of Zeus” in Greek mythology and are said to have mastery of both the land and sky. They are thought to be from India, where the natives of the land made their talons and claws into drinking cups because the talon of a Griffin was said to detect poison in a liquid. Griffins would find gold in the mountains and line their nests with it and as a result, were forced to become great guardians of the nests to keep the hunters away. According to Charles A. Brady in Canisius College The First Hundred Years, “Though the problems of when and where the Griffin began his reign as King Herald of the Canisius College of Arms are not easily settled, the whence is simple to establish. Our Griffin flew to us from the prow of LaSalle’s lost Griffon, the Flying Dutchman of the Great Lakes, which disappeared after making a safe voyage from the Niagara River to the Strait of Detroit. LaSalle’s ill-fated caravel, the first ship ever built on America’s inland seas, with its 45 tons and five cannons, had its beakhead adorned ‘with a flying Griffin, and an eagle above it,’ in honor of the two heraldic beasts on the armorial bearing of the great Frontenac.” The Griffin became the symbol for Canisius athletics in the mid-1930s. Steve Weller wrote in The Buffalo News Jan. 22, 1962, “You can have your Chihuahuas, Piranhas, Horned Frogs and Iguanas. The best all-around athletic mascot in business today has to be the beast adopted by Canisius College – the Golden Griffin.”

AdministrationRev. Vincent M. Cooke, S.J.President

President of Canisius College since 1993, Rev. Vincent M. Cooke, S.J. has transformed Canisius College from a commuter college serving primarily the Western New York market into a residential comprehensive university drawing students from across the Northeast and beyond.

Under Father Cooke’s leadership, Canisius has invested nearly $142 million in 24 major capital projects on the Main street campus, including $85 million in eight major residence hall projects during this time. Plans to de-velop Science Hall, an interdisciplinary science center at the college, are underway.

Educating students for the demands of an ever-changing world is a high priority for Father Cooke. New majors in emerging fields such as bioinformatics, international business, accounting information systems, health and human performance and digital media arts have recently been added to Canisius’ comprehensive curriculum. Canisius faculty, students and staff are heavily involved in a wide variety of service learning and volunteer activi-ties throughout Western New York and beyond.

Father Cooke received high marks in a Buffalo News poll of Western New York leaders which ranked Father Cooke as the second most influential civic leader and the college as the second most influential institution overall in terms of their positive impact on the community. Father Cooke was also recognized by The Buffalo News as one of its Outstanding Citizens for 2001 and named the 2003 Renaissance Man by the Buffalo Renaissance Foundation (BRF). He received the 2005 Humanitarian Award from the Niagara Lutheran Foundation, and the National Federation for Just Communities (NFJC) of Western New York presented Father Cooke with a 2007 Citation Award for his community leadership.

In early 2008, Father Cooke served as a delegate at the Jesuits’ General Congregation 35 that elected Father Adolfo Nicolas as the new General of the Society of Jesus. Father Cooke was also a delegate at General Congrega-tion 33 in 1983 that elected Father Peter-Hans Kolvenbach as General.

Prior to joining the Canisius community, Father Cooke served as executive and academic vice president of John Carroll University. Born in New York and raised in Hoboken, NJ, Father Cooke received a bachelor of arts degree from Fordham University in 1960; a Licentiate in philosophy from Loyola Seminary, Shrub Oak, in 1961; master’s degrees in teaching and philosophy in 1962 and 1965; respectively, from Fordham; advanced theology degrees from Woodstock College in 1967 and Yale University in 1968; and a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Wisconsin – Madison in 1971. Fa-ther Cooke’s academic area of expertise focuses on ethics, the theory of knowledge and the philosophy of language.

Father Cooke is currently a member of the board of trustees of Fordham University, and a member of the finance committee of the New York Province of the Society of Jesus.

Dr. Ellen ConleyVice President for Student Affairs

Ellen O. Conley, PhD, a member of the Canisius Community since 1970, was named vice president for student affairs in 1998. One of her many accomplishments in her role as vice president includes spearheading the up-grade of the athletics program at the college.

Dr. Conley earned a bachelor’s degree from Slippery Rock State College (1967), advanced education degrees from the University of Pittsburgh (1968) and Buffalo State (1973) and a doctorate in higher education from the University at Buffalo (1981).

During her tenure as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Conley supported the formation of the School of Education and Human Services, developed a mentoring program for new faculty, initiated the development of majors in criminal justice and environmental science and guided the initiative to implement a Master of Sci-ence in Organizational Communication and Development. She also established the Fine Arts Department and facilitated the development of MusiCanisius, which has since evolved into the ArtsCanisius program.

While acting dean, she coordinated the promotion of the school’s graduate education program to the Canadian market and guided the implementation of the Master in Sport Administration.

From 1987-89, Dr. Conley was the assistant director of athletics for women’s sports and financial aid, and from 1987-90, she was the athletic scholarship coordinator. Under her direction, the women’s athletic program was formed and grew from one club level team to seven varsity teams. In addition, she implemented and monitored an athletic scholarship program for men’s and women’s non-revenue producing sports.

From 1982-1990 Dr. Conley served as chair of the undergraduate Physical Education Major Program and Coordinator of the Physical Education Gradu-ate Program. In 1989, she developed alternative curricular tracks for physical education majors to enhance enrollment, and in 1986, she co-wrote the New York State Professional Preparation Council’s position paper for “Strengthening Teaching in New York State.”

Bill MaherDirector of Athletics

Named Director of Athletics in May 2005, Bill Maher is in his fifth year back in the Blue and Gold.

Since taking over at Canisius, Golden Griffin athletic teams have won 18 conference or regional championships, with the soft-ball team advancing to the NCAA Tournament in each of the past three seasons and qualifying for the NCAA Tournament 11 times in the last 15 seasons. The 2008-09 women’s basket-ball team set the program’s Division I record with 24 wins and advanced to the Women’s NIT for the first time in program history. The 2008 women’s soccer team won a program-record six MAAC games and advanced to a four-team MAAC Tourna-ment for the first time since 1994. The synchronized swimming program won its 12th consecutive ECAC Championship in 2009

and also finished second at the U.S. Collegiate Championships for the second consecutive season.

The 2008 men’s lacrosse team advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program his-tory and won a share of the regular-season MAAC Championship for the second time in three seasons. The 2008 baseball program earned a share of the regular-season title for the first time in 14 years, set a program record with 41 wins and has advanced to the MAAC Tournament each of the past three sea-sons while qualifying for the MAAC Championship game for the first time in 2009. The 2006 volleyball team set a program record for victories, qualified for a four-team MAAC Tournament in 2008 for the first time since 1994 and during the past three seasons has had the most wins during any three-year stretch in program history. The hockey program has improved its standing in the Atlantic Hockey standings during each of the past three seasons.

During the past four seasons, 99 student-athletes have earned all-league honors, 20 have won conference player or rookie of the year awards and 45 were voted to all-tournament teams. On the academic level during the past four athletic seasons, 273 student-athletes were named to the MAAC All-Academic Honor Roll, while 75 hockey players made the Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team and 15 synchronized swimmers were honored as U.S. Syn-chro Academic All-Americans. During the past four years, Canisius has had 13 student-athletes recognized on the district level as ESPN The Magazine CoSIDA All-Academic, including six during the 2008-09 academic year. Canisius has claimed the Battle of the Bridge and won the Canal Cup in each of the past two seasons, which is an all-sports competition with rival Niagara University.

Maher has overseen renovations to the Koessler Athletic Center and the Demske Sports Complex. A new Center for Athletic Training opened in May 2007. New locker rooms were constructed for all female teams and finished in 2008 while the men and women’s basketball teams each received new locker rooms in the summer of 2008. The Demske Sports Complex received a $1.7 million facelift with the installation of new A-Turf as well as new scoreboards.

Starting with the 2007-08 academic year, Maher began a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Management Council.

A Canisius graduate and former assistant athletic director at the school, Maher spent seven years at the University at Buffalo and served as the Bulls’ interim athletic director from 2003-05.

During his tenure as the interim athletic director at Buffalo, Maher helped UB Athletics oversee $3.6 million in capital improvements to its athletic facili-ties, restructure the school’s Blue & White Club fund drive for athletics, which generated $1 million during the 2003-04 season, and develop marketing campaigns which increased attendance at athletic events.

He also oversaw the development of the men’s basketball program, which set a school record for victories and earned the first postseason bid in school history with an invitation to the 2005 National Invitation Tournament. Under his watch, the Bulls’ RPI increased from 284 in 2003 to as high as 34 during the 2004-05 season.

Maher was a four-year letterwinner on the Canisius College football team from 1985-88 and earned All-America honorable mention honors as a senior. He received his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Canisius in 1989 and his master’s degree in sport management from East Stroudsburg University in 1990. Following an internship with the New York Knicks, Maher returned to Canisius in 1991, becoming the assistant athletic director for compliance in 1994.

He became the director of compliance at the University at Buffalo in 1998, where he moved up the ranks and was named senior associate athletic direc-tor in 2002. In that role, he managed the day-to-day operations of the Division of Athletics, including the direct supervision of Buffalo’s football and men’s and women’s basketball programs, in addition to the office of compliance and the office of student-athlete services.

Maher resides in East Amherst with his wife, Kristin, and sons, Danny and David.

Traci MurphySenior Women’s Administrator/Associate Athletic Director

Traci Murphy is in her fifth year as Associate Athletic Director and Senior Women’s Administrator for the Golden Griffins. Murphy joined the Canisius staff af-ter spending seven seasons at the University of Loui-siana at Monroe.

Murphy is responsible for all NCAA rules enforcement of Canisius’ 16 Divi-sion I athletic programs in addition to all areas of student-athlete welfare. She supervises compliance, academic counseling, strength and conditioning and athletic training. She also oversees the CHAMPS/Life Skills program, and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Murphy is the sport supervisor for women’s soccer, men’s soccer, women’s cross country, men’s cross country, softball. She serves on MAAC commit-tees for Athletic Administration, Finance, Gender and Minority Issues, and chairs the MAAC Swimming and Diving Committee. She also organizes the annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) at Canisius and helped found the WNY Girls in Sports Program. The program, in collabora-tion with the City of Buffalo Public Schools, area colleges and universities, the Bills and Girl Scout Council, focuses specifically on young girls (ages 9-12) and their involvement in sports.

Murphy began her career in 1992 as associate head athletic trainer at St Mary’s and moved to ULM in 1998. She added the responsibility of senior woman administrator in 2001 which involved the monitoring of women’s sports and mentoring the SAAC.

In July 2003, she was promoted to the position of director of academics, compliance and student-athlete services. Murphy worked to develop and implement an enhanced academic development and compliance program for ULM’s student-athletes and the athletics department. Prior to ULM, Murphy served five years as the head athletic trainer at St. Mary’s College of Maryland.

She is a 1989 graduate of West Chester University with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education. In 1992, Murphy earned a master’s degree in health education from the University of Arkansas.

The Maryland native and her husband, Pat, have two children, Sean (8) and Sarah (4).

John MaddockAssociate Athletic Director - External Affairs

John Maddock is in his 29th year with Canisius Col-lege athletics and his 13th as associate athletic direc-tor for external affairs. Originally hired as the Golden Griffins’ sports information director, the native of Washington, Ill., was named an assistant athletic di-rector prior to the 1987-88 season and moved into

his current position in 1997. Maddock is responsible for corporate partner-ships, marketing and promotions, licensing, the Blue & Gold Club and ticket sales. Maddock is the sport supervisor for hockey, baseball, golf, swimming and diving and synchronized swimming.

The 54-year-old Maddock oversaw the operation of the department of ath-letics during Spring 2005 before Bill Maher was named the director of ath-letics. Maddock also assisted the MAAC with plans for its 25th Anniversary celebration during the 2005-06 athletic season.

He chaired the search committee for the Griffs’ head football coach in 2000 and men’s soccer coach in 1998. He serves on the Hall of Fame and the MLK Awards Selection Committees and oversaw the development of the athletic department’s current logo. He was also instrumental in planning the season-long 100-year anniversary celebration for men’s basketball in 2003-04.

Maddock arrived at Canisius in July 1981 after spending two-and-a-half years as the administrative assistant to the athletic director at Brockport State Col-lege. Prior to his job at Brockport, he was the ticket manager for the Atlanta Braves Triple-A farm club in Richmond, Va.

A graduate of Western Illinois University, Maddock received his bachelor’s degree in recreation and park administration in 1976 and his master’s de-gree in athletic administration in 1978. In addition to his duties at Canisius, Maddock is an active member of the National Association of Collegiate Mar-keting Administrators (NACMA) and the former chair of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Committee on Committees. He also served on the CoSIDA Academic All-America Committee.

Maddock spent two seasons as the public relations director for the North Atlantic Conference and served as the host for the 1990 ECAC-SIDA confer-ence at the Buffalo Hilton. He chaired the Baseball Committee for the 1993 World University Games and was the assistant media coordinator for the 2000 NCAA Division I men’s basketball opening round games played at Buf-falo’s HSBC Arena.

Maddock was honored in 1998 by ECAC-SIDA with the Irving T. Marsh Award for contributions, dedication and excellence in the field of collegiate sports information.

John and his wife, Priscilla, reside in Snyder with their daughters Mackenzie and Mikaela.
