WOMEN’S LAX • SEASON PREVIEW

When 11th-year head coach Scott Teeter first started to shape the Golden Griffin women’s lacrosse program, he envisioned starting a powerhouse program at Canisius.

The program reached its first goal of a MAAC Championship with a title in 2011. The Griffs then proved that they weren’t a one-year wonder and backed it up with a second-straight title in 2012.

In 2013, Teeter wants to the Griffs to go one step further. This season, Canisius has a chance to become the first team in the conference’s history to win three-straight MAAC Championships and after that is where Teeter really wants to move this program.

“A MAAC Championship is not really our goal anymore as much as it is an expectation,” Teeter said. “Our ultimate goal this season is to advance in the NCAA Tournament.

“Last year, it was important for our program to prove we weren’t a fluke and that we were here to stay in the MAAC. We are now here to prove that we can reload year after year and continue to be a dominant force not just in the MAAC but also at the national level.”

The pieces are there for Teeter’s next step of his plan to come to fruition. Canisius returns 15 letterwinners and seven starters from last year’s championship team. Add 10 talented newcomers to a lot of experience at every position and this could become the season where Canisius makes its name at the national level.

“We were playing our best lacrosse at the end of the season when it counted last year,” Teeter said. “Now we need to do it more consistently and the sky’s the limit for us. To advance the program nationally, we need to be more consistent from the opening whistle of the first game through to the last.

“We’re a deep squad this season. Our strength is once again in the midfield and we should be able to push the tempo through our transition game. We have multiple threats on offense and a much more experienced defense than in past seasons.”

AttackComing off the best offensive season in the program’s history – where the Griffs averaged a school-record 13.21 goals per game – the attacking unit will have a new look with the graduation of 2012 MAAC Offensive Player of the Year Carly Quinn. The Griffs, however, won’t have to look far to replace the program’s all-time points leader as Canisius is moving her sister, Tori Quinn, into the position Carly held for the last three seasons.

“We have a little bit of a different look this year with the loss of Carly Quinn to graduation,” Teeter said. “Carly’s sister, Tori, will move a similar move into that position that Carly made after her freshman season with a trio competing for the other feeding position.”

It also helps the Griffs ease the transition with Lindsey Morgan returning on attack. The senior placed fifth in the MAAC last season with 44 goals – the sixth-best mark in the program’s history. Morgan is now expected to lead the attacking unit and not have it miss a beat from a record-setting campaign a year ago.

“Lindsey Morgan is going to be the key component for us this season,” Teeter said. “She will be expected to put up big numbers again and lead our attacking unit. Lindsey is a great finisher and she will be surrounded by a lot of talent. As a whole, we are much more experienced up front this season then we were last year.”

Meghan McGunigle, Sr • 14gp, 8 pts, 6g, 2a, 3gb, 3dc, 1ct“We need to find a way get Meghan involved more on the offensive end,” Teeter said. “She has a great shot and we need to see it more this season so we can utilize her biggest strength.”

Lindsey Morgan, Sr • 19gp, 50 pts, 44g, 6a, 36gb, 21dc, 29ct“Lindsey will most likely draw our opposition’s top low defender,” Teeter said. “She needs to win that matchup for us to be our most successful. Lindsey is our leader up front and her cutting and finishing are keys to our offense.”

Whitley Perry, So • 18gp, 14 pts, 10g, 4a, 7gb, 4ct“We are looking for Whitley to make the big step this season and be a consistent threat in our offense,” Teeter said. “She has great size and can develop into a top attacker in our league.”

Tori Quinn, So • 19gp, 25 pts, 20g, 5a, 17gb, 20dc, 16ct“Moving to more of a feeding position this year from the midfield, Tori is doing a great job learning the ins and outs of our offense,” Teeter said. “We are relying on her to distribute the ball to our finishers and run our offense.”

Natalie Wagaman, So • 8gp, 2 pts, 1g, 1a“Natalie’s speed will help in our offensive transition game,” Teeter said. “She will also help in our redefending and we will look for her to contribute more on the offensive end this season.”

Caroline Ogden, Fr • Ridgefield, Conn.“Caroline is adjusting to the Division I game nicely,” Teeter said. “She has a great shot and should be able to contribute on the scoresheet this season.”

MidfieldersEven with the graduation of one of the best players in the program’s history, Megan Oosting, the midfield is once again a strength of the this year’s squad. The Griffs return two All-MAAC selections from a year ago in Morgan Leonard – who was also named MAAC Preseason Player of the Year – and Maria Kotas.

The Griffs will look for those two to continue to control the game both on the offensive and defensive sides, while also filling the void left by Oosting.

“Morgan and Maria need to be our best two players on the field and they certainly have the talent to do so,” Teeter said. “We graduated the most decorated player in our program’s history in our midfield. It leaves a hole but Morgan and Maria have the ability to step right in so we don’t miss a beat.

“Our midfield will have a different look but our new look will be tough for defenses to adjust. We are very athletic and we are able to pressure aggressively from riding and defending.”

Morgan Leonard, Sr • 19gp, 39 pts, 29g, 10a, 45g, 37dc, 40ct“Morgan Leonard is going to be counted on take the draw this season and build on her late-season MAAC Tournament MVP experience,” Teeter said. “We opened her role toward the end of the year and she was able to contribute on the offensive side more. This season, we expect her to be one of our main threats and dominate both ends of the field.”

Maria Kotas, Jr • 19gp, 31 pts, 23g, 8a, 40gb, 37dc, 23ct“This is really Maria’s year to shine,” Teeter said. “She has all the pieces to be a dominant player in our conference. She is a heart and soul player that leads by example. Her effort is second to none and it is contagious throughout our whole team.”

Meghan Cuddy, So • 19gp, 12 pts, 9g, 3a, 15gb, 5dc, 3ct“We’re hoping that Meghan takes a giant step forward this season to become a key contributor after a solid rookie season,” Teeter said. “She needs to play with confidence and believe in her ability to succeed at this level.”

Tori Greco, So • 13gp, 2 pts, 2g, 1gb, 1ct“Tori is working hard every day on her skill sets and is coming off a great fall,” Teeter said. “She will see increased playing time this year and will be able to contribute on both ends of the field.”

A two-time All-MAA selection, the Griffs look for Maria Kotas to take the next step in 2013.

SEASON PREVIEW • WOMEN’S LAX

Kali Baird, Fr • Williamsville, N.Y.“Kali is a depth player that gives us a lot of options in the midfield,” Teeter said. “If she is able to take advantage and make the most of opportunities, she will compete for playing time this season.”

Cody Kucharski, Fr • Watertown, N.Y.“Cody is a very talented player,” Teeter said. “She is still adjusting to the speed of the college game and learning our systems. Once she progresses, she will be a dominant force on both ends of the field.”

Brenna Murray, Fr • LaFayette, N.Y.“Brenna adds depth and has impressed the coaching staff this past fall,” Teeter said. “She is fine-tuning her game and increasing her lacrosse IQ. She just needs to gain some experience and she should be able to help our team this year.”

DefendersA unit that has been a concern in each of the past two seasons due to inexperience is now one of the most experienced positions on the field for the Griffs. Prior to both the 2011 and 2012 championship runs, Canisius was forced to replace each of its four defensive starters from the prior season.

Now, the Griffs return nearly everybody from a defensive unit that posted the second-best goals against average in the program’s history.

“I’m excited about our defense this season as we have a lot of experienced players returning from last year,” Teeter said. “We are athletic on the back end, we understand our team concepts and compete at a high level.

“We’re looking for Gabby Kotas and Casey Depauw to log a lot of time and really build on their strong seasons from last year.”

Gabby Kotas, Jr • 19gp, 27gb, 6dc, 12ct“We need Gabby to expand off her All-MAAC selection from last season,” Teeter said. “She is one of our leaders on the back end and has the capabilities to be one of the best defenders in the league this season.”

Stephanie Schmalz, Jr • 10gp, 4gb, 5dc“Stephanie has been working hard every day in practice,” Teeter said. “She will have a shot to make plays and contribute to our defense this season.”

Taylor Smith, Jr • 8gp, 2gb, 1dc, 1ct“Taylor is recovering from a knee injury and should be ready to go at the beginning of the season,” Teeter said. “She needs to continue to work hard and get into game shape and that will lead to her being a part of our defense this season.”

Casey Depauw, So • 19gp, 12gb, 7dc, 9ct“Casey needs to use her size and draw from her basketball abilities to make plays,” Teeter said. “She is coming off a solid rookie season and has put herself into the best shape of her career. That should help her take her game to the next level.”

Ari Anderson, Jr • Quinnipiac University“Ari is a transfer from Quinnipiac and is looking for a fresh start,” Teeter said. “She is rebounding from an ankle injury suffered last year. She is improving every day in practice and I see her being able to help us succeed this season.”

Ashley Bull, Fr • Langley, British Columbia“Ashley is our most talented freshman,” Teeter said. “She will be counted on to step in right away and win us the ball. Ashley has done a good job using her Under-19 Championship experiences to adjust to the Division I level very well.”

Carley DePasquale, Fr • Loveland, Ohio“Carley is a depth defender that is adjusting to the speed of the Division I game,” Teeter said. “She is a hard worker that never takes a play off.”

Sami Franco, Fr • Webster, N.Y.“Sami adds depth and aggressiveness to our defense,” Teeter said. “She is very good at pressuring the attacker and forcing them into mistakes.”

Alexis Roskovich, Fr • Salisbury, Md.“Alexis is a fearless, tough defender with great size,” Teeter said. “Opposing teams will automatically feel her presence on the field.”

GoaltendersOne of the few question marks remaining for the 2013 team are at the goaltending position. Similar to the 2012 campaign, the Griffs have multiple goaltenders that can lead the team to success.

Last season, rookie Kayla Scully won the starting position during the year and then anchored a defensive unit that was peaking at the end of the season to a MAAC Championship. The Griffs are taking a similar approach this season and Scully will battle with senior Gina Molfetta and freshman Claudia Coleates for the number one goaltending position.

“This is the one position that is still up for grabs,” Teeter said. “Throughout the fall, not one of the goalies could distance themselves and emerge as the starter. All three bring different qualities to the table and we will likely select which goalie to use based on their matchup and strengths.”

Gina Molfetta, Sr • 11gp, 11.58 gaa, .315 sv pct.“Being our senior goalie, we are hoping for Gina to leave her mark on the program,” Teeter said. “She has all the tools to be a top goalie in our conference and we just need bring it out of her and be more consistent.”

Kayla Scully, So • 14gp, 10.29 gaa, .441 sv pct.“Kayla was huge for us down the stretch last season after winning the job midway through the year,” Teeter said. “She needs to learn what it takes to be a Division I athlete away from the field and when she does, she will be able to reach her highest potential.”

Claudia Coleates, Fr • Stanley, N.Y.“Claudia is a very talented goalie that just needs to gain some game experience,” Teeter said. “She has all the tools to contribute right away.”

CoachesTeeter is in his 11th season leading the Golden Griffin program and is joined on the sideline by Allison Daley, Kate Faas and Janelle Stegeland. Daley and Faas are both in their seconds season with the Canisius coaching staff, while Stegeland joins the Griffs after a successful four-year career at Syracuse, including an appearance in the national championship game last season.

Lindsey Morgan earned first-team All-MAAChonors after totaling 44 goals in 2012.

Scully was named to the MAAC All-Rookie Team last season to help the Griffs to the 2012 MAAC title.

Gabby Kotas is the lone upperclassmen starting on defense in 2013 after earning All-MAAC honors last season.

WOMEN’S LAX • COACH TEETER

Since taking the reins of one of the nation’s worst programs, Scott Teeter has completely turned the fortunes of the Canisius College women’s lacrosse team. Now in his 11th season as Golden Griffin head coach, Teeter has guided Canisius from a team that averaged fewer than two wins per season to back-to-back MAAC titles in 2011 and 2012.

Teeter’s efforts were fully realized in each of the last two campaigns, leading the Griffs to the top of the MAAC. In 2011, Canisius won a school-record 14 games and capped the successful campaign with the program’s first conference

title. In 2012, the Griffs successfully defended their championship, becoming the first MAAC school to repeat in five years.

The Griffs have also made their mark on the national scene in the last two years. Canisius finished the 2011 campaign with a final RPI ranking of 24 and ahead of perennial powers Notre Dame, Johns Hopkins, Richmond and Boston University. The 2012 team battled three nationally-ranked opponents to tight contests, including a narrow 13-12 game against No. 8/15 Massachusetts in the NCAA Tournament.

Goalkeeper Allison Daley and midfielder Megan Oosting became the first two Canisius student-athlete to collect regional All-America honors, with Daley earning the distinction following the 2011 campaign and Oosting replicating the feat in 2012.

The success for the Golden Griffin women’s lacrosse team is even more remarkable knowing the rough starting position that Teeter was handed. Canisius won only 11 games and two conference matches in the program’s first seven seasons before Teeter made his mark. The 2005 MAAC Coach of the Year, Teeter is now the winningest coach in the conference’s history with 78 career victories and 34 MAAC wins.

To add to his successful 2011 and 2012 campaigns, Teeter also served as head coach of the Canadian Under-19 National Team for 22 months, leading the squad in the summer of 2011 at the IFWLA World Championship in Hannover, Germany. Named the team’s coach in December 2009, Teeter guided Canada to a bronze-medal showing, the team’s best finish in the tournament.

The achievements under Teeter are not limited to just the 2011 and 2012 campaigns. The highlights include:

• Teeter has recruited and coached two players who competed in the most recent Women’s Lacrosse World Cup. He has also coached 10 student-athletes who have participated in the Under-19 World Championship.

• Teeter has mentored seven Griffs to Player of the Year accolades, including three following the most recent 2012 campaign. Whitney Card was named the 2006 MAAC Offensive Player of the Year, while Carly Quinn earned the accolade in 2012. Megan Oosting won the inaugural Midfielder of the Year award in 2012, while Elise Crawford, Alana Chan, Allison Daley and Morgan Leonard were selected as the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2004, 2005, 2010 and 2012, respectively.

• A total of 41 players have earned All-MAAC accolades under Teeter’s guidance, including a school-record seven selections following the 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 campaigns.

• Teeter was named the league’s Coach of the Year in just his third season after leading the Griffs to an eight-win improvement in 2005.

• Overall, Canisius has qualified for 6-of-7 MAAC Tournament since the beginning of the 2006 season. The Classes of 2011 and 2012 became the first Griffs classes to qualify for all four conference tournaments during their careers, capping their runs with titles in their senior campaigns.

Before coming to Canisius, Teeter served as an assistant women’s lacrosse coach at Buffalo State College in 2002, where he helped guide the program to its best-ever finish at 5-6. Prior to his work at Buffalo State, he served as a student-assistant coach and team manager for the Canisius women’s lacrosse team for four years. He helped with instruction during practices and also assisted with game-day operations.

Teeter was a four-year letterwinner for the Canisius College ice hockey team, graduating from the school in 2002. He played field lacrosse for his high school in Shelburne, Ontario, while also playing box lacrosse for the Orangeville Northmen in Western Ontario.

Teeter graduated from Canisius with a degree in physical education in 2002 and earned his master’s degree in physical education with a concentration in sport psychology and coaching from Canisius in 2004.

Teeter and his wife, Jennifer, reside in Lake View.

ASST COACHES • WOMEN’S LAX

Allison DaleyAssistant Coach • Second Season • Canisius ‘11

One of the most decorated players in the program’s history, Allison Daley is in her second season as assistant coach with the Golden Griffin women’s lacrosse team.

In her first year on the sidelines, Daley helped the Griffs to their second-consecutive MAAC Championship, coaching the team’s defensive unit. Facing the task of replacing all five defensive starters from the team’s first title run, Daley led the unit to posting the second-best goals against average in the program’s history.

Under Daley’s watch in 2012, Morgan Leonard was named MAAC Defensive Player of the Year, while defender Gabby Kotas earned all-conference accolades. In addition, rookie netminder Kayla Scully made a quick adjustment to the collegiate game and collected MAAC All-Rookie Team honors.

In addition to her responsibilities of coaching the team’s defense, Daley serves as the team’s recruiting coordinator and is in charge of monitoring the team’s academic progress.

No stranger to winning during her tenure at Canisius, Daley completed one of the most successful playing careers in 2011. 2012 IN REVIEW • WOMEN’S LAX

In 2011, the Canisius College women’s lacrosse team reached the pinnacle of the MAAC for the first time in program history, winning the con-ference’s title with a 13-8 win over Fairfield. The Griffs were in no hurry to step down as the league’s premier program, repeating as champions in 2012.

The challenge of repeating as champions were nu-merous and the team didn’t obtain success easily. One of the biggest obstacles facing the Griffs was once again rebuilding its defense. Goalkeeper Alli-son Daley graduated following the 2011 title run as one of the most successful players to wear the Blue and Gold. In addition, all four starting defenders from 2011 were gone as well as Taylor Gray, who set the program’s single-season points record as a senior.

The team’s biggest concern proved to be a strength to start the year. Gina Molfetta anchored a strong Canisius defense to a 2-0 start - just the second in the program’s history. The junior netminder earned MAAC Defensive Player of the Week hon-ors after recording 10 saves in a one-goal win over Robert Morris in the season opener, including a point-blank stop with just 30 ticks remaining in the contest. Canisius followed with a win over Mon-mouth.

Following the initial success, however, the Griffs hit a rough patch to the season, coming up just short to some of the nation’s strongest competition. Canisius lost five-straight contests, which included narrow home losses to No. 7 Vanderbilt and No. 12 Ohio State by a combined five goals. The losing

streak dropped the Griffs to 2-5 on the season.

There were plenty of positives to take from the five-game slide, however, as senior midfielder Me-gan Oosting proved to be a dangerous weapon. In three-straight games against teams that spent the majority of the season in the national polls, Oost-ing emerged as a star with 11 points, 10 goals, 12 draw controls and six ground balls. She earned MAAC Offensive Player of the Week following her performance against some of the nation’s finest competition.

Another bright spot for the Griffs was the wel-comed performance of freshman goalkeeper Kayla Scully. The team’s eventual Rookie of the Year, Scully emerged in the Ohio State contest as a strong anchor to the team’s defense and would lead the Griffs the remainder of their champion-ship season.

Canisius quickly rebounded from its slide with a three-game winning streak to reach the .500 mark on the season. The Griffs earned a dominating 20-8 victory over local rival St. Bonaventure before beginning their defense of their 2011 MAAC title with conference wins against Manhattan and Sie-na. Oosting continued her strong senior campaign in a MAAC semifinal rematch with the Saints, to-taling a career-high seven goals in a 16-11 victory.

Next up for the Griffs was a rematch of the 2011 MAAC Championship against Fairfield. The teams battled back-and-forth and with the contest knot-ted at 10 in the closing seconds of regulation, Canisius had a golden opportunity to earn the victory. However, Fairfield saved a last-second free-position shot and outscored the Griffs, 2-1, in overtime for the 12-11 victory.

Canisius won its next game against Colgate, 13-5, behind a career-best 12 saves from Scully, but stumbled in its next MAAC contest at Marist, 13-11.

With a 6-7 overall record and 2-2 mark in confer-ence play, the Griffs knew they had to win their remaining MAAC contests to have a chance to defend their title. First up was local rival Niagara, where Canisius not only earned a dominating vic-tory but rewrote the record book in the process. The Griffs cruised to a 21-3 win against the Purple Eagles behind the strength of the Class of 2012 on Senior Night. Carly Quinn tied the program’s re-cord with 10 points, while establishing a new mark with eight assists. Her final assist of the night came on Oosting’s 141st career tally, setting the school record for most career goals.

Continuing its winning ways, the team traveled to Iona and beat the Gaels, 14-10, which saw Canisius punch its ticket to the MAAC Tournament. The Griffs finished the regular season with a narrow loss to perennial-power Boston University.

Standing in the way of their second-straight MAAC Championship were the only two teams that de-feated the Griffs during the regular season in third-

seeded Marist and top-seeded Fairfield. Canisius cruised to a 14-5 win against the Red Foxes in the semifinal, setting up a rematch with the Stags. Ju-nior midfielder Morgan Leonard led the Griffs with a season-best four goals in the semifinal victory.

With a second MAAC championship in grasp and only Fairfield in its way, Canisius wouldn’t be de-nied and avenged its early-season defeat to the Stags with a 15-11 victory. The Griffs took the lead for good late in the first half and dominated pos-session in the second stanza en route to the win. Leonard added five points and four goals in the title game to earn MAAC Tournament MVP and was joined on the all-tournament team by Oosting, Quinn, Maria Kotas and Lindsey Morgan.

From the first day of the season, the goal for the 2012 Canisius team was more than just winning its second-straight MAAC Championship, it was to take it a step further and compete for a bid to the 16-team NCAA Tournament. The Griffs faced nationally-ranked Massachusetts for the second-straight year for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Minutewomen entered the con-test ranked 15th in the country and had only one loss on the year to Northwestern.

In a battle to the very last second, UMass earned a 13-12 victory thanks to a tally with four seconds remaining in the game. Oosting led the Griffs with five points on three goals and two assists in her final collegiate game, finishing her career with school records in goals (154) and draw controls (201). Quinn also added three points for the Griffs and finished her career as the program’s all-time leading scorer with 203 points, surpassing the mark of 200 set by Lauren Walsh.

Oosting and Quinn finished as two of the most decorated players in the program’s history. Oost-ing earned the inaugural MAAC Midfielder of the Year, while Quinn became the second Griff to re-ceive the MAAC Offensive Player of the Year. In ad-dition, Leonard added a third individual accolade for Canisius, collecting the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year honor.

Overall, the Class of 2012 finished their careers as the most successful class in the program’s history, accounting for 42 wins, two conference titles and four trips to the conference tournament. Due to a redshirt season, Quinn saw action in 43 victories in a Canisius uniform, making her the most successful player in the program’s history.

Following the 2012 campaign, a number of Griffs were recognized for their strong seasons. Oosting became the second player in school history to earn regional All-America honors (Daley also earned the honor in 2011) and was joined on the All-MAAC First Team by Quinn, Leonard and Morgan. Both Maria and Gabby Kotas plus Tori Quinn earned second-team all-conference accolades.

The 2012 MAAC Defensive Player of the Year, Morgan Leonard also collected MAAC Tournament MVP honors after totaling nine points and eight goals in the two wins.

Department of AthleticsWhat is a Griffin?

The Griffin is a mythical creature of supposed gigantic size that has the head, forelegs and wings of an eagle and the hindquarters, tail and ears of a lion. They are well known for their speed, ability to fly and having eyes like an eagle as well as the strength and courage of a lion. Griffins have been known for centuries as symbols of strength and vigilance, have been called “The Hounds of Zeus” in Greek mythology and are said to have mastery of both the land and sky. They are thought to be from India, where the natives of the land made their talons and claws into drinking cups because the talon of a Griffin was said to detect poison in a liquid. Griffins would find gold in the mountains and line their nests with it and as a result, were forced to become great guardians of the nests to keep the hunters away. According to Charles A. Brady in Canisius College The First Hundred Years, “Though the problems of when and where the Griffin began his reign as King Herald of the Canisius College of Arms are not easily settled, the whence is simple to establish. Our Griffin flew to us from the prow of LaSalle’s lost Griffon, the Flying Dutchman of the Great Lakes, which disappeared after making a safe voyage from the Niagara River to the Strait of Detroit. LaSalle’s ill-fated caravel, the first ship ever built on America’s inland seas, with its 45 tons and five cannons, had its beakhead adorned ‘with a flying Griffin, and an eagle above it,’ in honor of the two heraldic beasts on the armorial bearing of the great Frontenac.” The Griffin became the symbol for Canisius athletics in the mid-1930s. Steve Weller wrote in The Buffalo News Jan. 22, 1962, “You can have your Chihuahuas, Piranhas, Horned Frogs and Iguanas. The best all-around athletic mascot in business today has to be the beast adopted by Canisius College – the Golden Griffin.”

AdministrationJohn J. HurleyPresident

John J. Hurley assumed his position as the 24th president of Canisius College on July 1, 2010. He is the first lay president in Canisius College’s 140-year history.

As president, he has led the college in the development of a new strategic plan ap-proved by the college’s Board of Trustees and entitled A Transformational Education: The Strategic Plan for Canisius College. He has begun the renovation of the former HealthNow building on Main Street into a comprehensive state-of-the-art interdisci-

plinary science center, a $68 million capital project that will be completed in phases. He has also started the conversion of the Rev. Andrew L. Bouwhuis, S.J. Library into a comprehensive technology-based learning commons. He has announced the Hamlin Park Initiative through which houses owned by the col-lege in the immediate neighborhood are being renovated and sold to buyers who commit to being owner occupiers. The college is also nearing its $90 mil-lion goal for the largest campaign in college history, A Legacy of Leadership: The Campaign for Canisius College.

A 1978 alumnus of Canisius, President Hurley served as executive vice president of the college from 2007 to 2010 and vice president for college relations from 1997 to 2010. In these positions, he oversaw the college’s ad-vancement and external relations and managed institutional strategic plan-ning, integrated marketing, and legal and compliance issues. He also served as secretary to the Canisius College Board of Trustees.

President Hurley has played a significant leadership role in the college’s invest-ment in the campus since 1994, which now totals more than $150 million. He was the architect of the college’s innovative Employer Assisted Housing pro-

gram, which offers employees grants in the form of forgivable loans to assist them with the purchase of homes near the college’s central Buffalo campus.

A native of Buffalo, President Hurley is a graduate of St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute in Kenmore; Canisius College (BA 1978 summa cum laude, English/history); and the University of Notre Dame Law School (JD 1981). He prac-ticed law for 16 years, including 13 years at the Buffalo firm of Phillips, Lytle, Hitchcock, Blaine & Huber, where he concentrated his practice in the areas of secured lending, bankruptcy and insolvency.

President Hurley serves on numerous educational associations and as the rep-resentative of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference’s representative on the NCAA’s President’s Advisory Group. He serves as Buffalo Bishop Edward U. Kmiec’s appointee on the board of Fidelis Care New York, a $2 billion health maintenance organization that serves the poor in New York State. He and his wife, Maureen, are chairs of the Bishop’s Council of the Laity for the Diocese of Buffalo. President Hurley is also a member of the Buffalo Philharmonic Board of Trustees.

Dr. Ellen ConleyVice President for Student Affairs

Ellen O. Conley, PhD, a member of the Canisius Community since 1970, was named vice president for student affairs in 1998. One of her many accomplishments in her role as vice president includes spearheading the upgrade of the athletics program at the college.

Dr. Conley earned a bachelor’s degree from Slippery Rock State College (1967), ad-vanced education degrees from the Univer-sity of Pittsburgh (1968) and Buffalo State

(1973) and a doctorate in higher education from the University at Buffalo (1981).

During her tenure as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Conley supported the formation of the School of Education and Human Services, de-veloped a mentoring program for new faculty, initiated the development of majors in criminal justice and environmental science and guided the initiative to implement a Master of Science in Organizational Communication and De-velopment. She also established the Fine Arts Department and facilitated the development of MusiCanisius, which has since evolved into the ArtsCanisius program.

While acting dean, she coordinated the promotion of the school’s graduate education program to the Canadian market and guided the implementation of the Master in Sport Administration.

From 1987-89, Dr. Conley was the assistant director of athletics for women’s sports and financial aid, and from 1987-90, she was the athletic scholarship coordinator. Under her direction, the women’s athletic program was formed and grew from one club level team to seven varsity teams. In addition, she implemented and monitored an athletic scholarship program for men’s and women’s non-revenue producing sports.

From 1982-1990 Dr. Conley served as chair of the undergraduate Physical Education Major Program and Coordinator of the Physical Education Gradu-ate Program. In 1989, she developed alternative curricular tracks for physical education majors to enhance enrollment, and in 1986, she co-wrote the New York State Professional Preparation Council’s position paper for “Strengthen-ing Teaching in New York State.”

Bill MaherDirector of Athletics

Named Director of Athletics in May 2005, Bill Maher is in his eighth year back in the Blue and Gold.

Under Maher’s watch, the Golden Griffins have enjoyed unprecedented success. In his seven seasons, Canisius teams have advanced to eight NCAA Tournaments in addition to a WNIT ap-pearance in 2009, marking the most successful seven-year run in the school’s history.

Most recently, the Canisius lacrosse pro-grams enjoyed the most successful year in conference history with both the men’s and

women’s teams winning MAAC Championships in 2012 and advancing to the NCAA Tournament. It marked the first time that one school swept both titles in the same season. In addition, the synchronized swimming team continued their dominance during the 2011-12 season, winning the program’s 15th-straight ECAC Championship.

Overall, the 17 Canisius squads have accumulated 29 conference or regional championships under Maher’s leadership, with a number of teams producing the best seasons in program history. The Canisius campus has also undergone a number of renovations, including upgrades to the Demske Sports Complex and Koessler Athletic Center.

During the past seven seasons, 34 student-athletes have won conference player or rookie of the year awards, including six in each of the past two seasons. Prior to Maher’s arrival, Canisius won 24 player or rookie of the year awards in the previous 10 seasons combined.

The achievements of Griffs go past graduation as well. Under Maher’s watch, 13 players have been drafted professionally. In 2011, Canisius was the only school in the country with two first-round selections in the National Lacrosse League Draft. In addition, former Griff John Axford pitches with the Milwaukee Brew-ers, while two hockey graduates have signed NHL contracts.

To go along with the school’s success on a team and individual level, Canisius has controlled the Battle of the Bridge series with local rival Niagara University. In four of the last five campaigns, the Griffs have claimed the Canal Cup, which is an all-sports competition between the two neighboring schools.

On an academic level during Maher’s tenure, Canisius has had 21 student-athletes recognized on the district level as Capital One CoSIDA All-Academic selections, including seven Capital One Academic All-Americans during the last three years.

Maher has overseen numerous renovations to the Koessler Athletic Center and the Demske Sports Complex. A new Center for Athletic Training opened in May 2007. New locker rooms were constructed for all female teams and finished in

2008, while the men and women’s basketball teams each received new locker rooms in the summer of 2008. The Demske Sports Complex received a $1.7 mil-lion facelift with the installation of new A-Turf as well as new scoreboards in 2008. New offices for head coaches and their assistants along with new locker rooms for all of the men’s teams were constructed in 2010.

GoGriffs.com, the official web site of Canisius athletics, has undergone two re-designs under Maher. The department has also developed a video webstreaming package for all home events in seven sports (men’s and women’s soccer, vol-leyball, men’s and women’s basketball and men’s and women’s lacrosse) and is a part of the MAAC.TV package.

Maher is the MAAC’s representative to the NCAA Legislative Council, which has one representative from each of the 31 Division I conferences. He chairs the MAAC men’s lacrosse committee and is also a member of the MAAC Technology Committee. Canisius has hosted eight MAAC Championships since 2005 and will also be hosting the 2013 Swimming and Diving Championships and the 2013 Women’s Lacrosse Championship.

A Canisius graduate and former assistant athletic director at the school, Maher spent seven years at the University at Buffalo and served as the Bulls’ interim athletic director from 2003-05.

During his tenure as the interim athletic director at Buffalo, Maher helped UB Athletics oversee $3.6 million in capital improvements to its athletic facilities, restructure the school’s Blue & White Club fund drive for athletics, which gen-erated $1 million during the 2003-04 season, and develop marketing campaigns which increased attendance at athletic events.

He also oversaw the development of the men’s basketball program, which set a school record for victories and earned the first postseason bid in school history with an invitation to the 2005 National Invitation Tournament. Under his watch, the Bulls’ RPI increased from 284 in 2003 to as high as 34 during the 2004-05 season.

Maher was a four-year letterwinner on the Canisius College football team from 1985-88 and earned All-America honorable mention honors as a senior. He re-ceived his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Canisius in 1989 and his master’s degree in sport management from East Stroudsburg University in 1990. Following an internship with the New York Knicks, Maher returned to Canisius in 1991, becoming the assistant athletic director for compliance in 1994.

He became the director of compliance at the University at Buffalo in 1998, where he moved up the ranks and was named senior associate athletic director in 2002. In that role, he managed the day-to-day operations of the Division of Athletics, including the direct supervision of Buffalo’s football and men’s and women’s basketball programs, in addition to the office of compliance and the office of student-athlete services.

Maher resides in East Amherst with his wife, Kristin, and sons, Danny and David.
