Since first arriving at Canisius as head coach of the women’s lacrosse program, Scott Teeter has always had one goal for the Golden Griffins – to win a MAAC Championship. Now that the Griffs finally tasted glory during their 2011 title run, the team has their eyes even further down the road now.

“Our goal has always been to win a conference championship and that has not changed this season,” Teeter said. “With our success though, that is now the expectation for us and our goal for this year is to get to the NCAA Tournament and advance through it.”

The pieces are there for the Griffs to continue their success of 2011 and take a step further in 2012. After winning the program’s first MAAC title last year, the Griffs return 13 letterwinners and five starters from their championship roster, including six of the eight players to tally at least 20 points in 2011.

Headlining the list of returning student-athletes are seniors Megan Oosting and Carly Quinn, who were each named to the All-MAAC Preseason Team after unanimous first-team all-conference selections in 2011. Oosting also received the added honor as 2012 MAAC Preseason Player of the Year by league’s head coaches, while the Griffs were named preseason favorites for the first time in the program’s history

“Both Megan and Carly have the ability to take over a game and lead us to victory,” Teeter said. “They work extremely well together and are one of the best scoring tandems in the NCAA. Both of them are coming off fantastic seasons and are very hungry to advance the program to higher levels.”

While the Griffs did lose a record-setting senior class to graduation, Teeter believes that this year’s leadership unit – led by captains Oosting, Quinn and junior Lindsey Morgan – have learned a number of valuable lessons from last year’s group of seniors.

“That senior class is going to be tough to replace but the one thing they left behind is that they taught the classes below how to set the bar high and never be satisfied when you reach the bar,” Teeter said. “Our captains need to be the voice this season that demands excellence and help move our program forward. All three players had big roles last season and they now need to expand their roles – both on and off the field.”

MidfieldersThe one position where Teeter can really lean on with their talent and championship experience is in the midfield unit. The Griffs return three all-conference performers in Oosting, Morgan and sophomore Maria Kotas and with even more talent arriving, own perhaps the deepest unit in the conference.

“The strength of our team this season is in the midfield unit,” Teeter said. “We are extremely deep and will be able to control the tempo by pushing at a fast pace. Our true leader in the unit is Megan Oosting but Maria Kotas has a year under her belt now and is ready to join Oosting as an elite-level performer.”

Oosting has earned All-MAAC First Team honors in each of her last two seasons, while Morgan and Kotas were both named to the second team following the 2011 campaign. Kotas, who peaked during the conference championship and also earned all-tournament accolades, was the first Canisius freshman to be named to the all-conference team since 2006.

Rachel Brand, Sr • 20gp, 13 pts, 7g, 6a, 7gb, 10dc, 5ct“Rachel is a coaches dream that you can play her anywhere on the field,” Teeter said. “We will use her versatility to make us stronger in the areas that are needed throughout the season.”

Megan Oosting, Sr • 20gp, 63 pts, 52g, 11a, 44gb, 81dc, 27ct“Megan is going to be counted on to be a dominant force on both ends,” Teeter said. “She has improved in each of her previous seasons and we still think that there is a lot more potential left in the tank.”

Theresa Walton, Sr • 20gp, 24 pts, 19g, 5a, 15gb, 14dc, 9ct“Theresa will be a top-six midfielder that will dominate on the defensive end,” Teeter said. “She will be counted on to lead our young defense but will also be able to contribute on the offensive end as well.”

Kate Gosson, Jr • 19gp, 24 pts, 21g, 3a, 22gb, 7dc, 6ct“Kate may be counted on to use her strength, size and leadership more on the defensive end this season,” Teeter said. “We are looking for her to play more consistent this season and think she can take that next step as a junior.”

Morgan Leonard, Jr • 17gp, 24 pts, 23g, 1a, 27gb, 24dc, 26ct (at Delaware)“The addition of Morgan makes us all-around better,” Teeter said. “When you’re fortunate enough to get a player of her talents, which is at the top of our conference on both ends, it will take us to the next level.”

Lindsey Morgan, Jr • 20gp, 22 pts, 15g, 7a, 31gb, 22dc, 19ct“Lindsey has to be a finisher for us this year,” Teeter said. “She is going to have ample opportunities and she needs to hit the scoresheet two or three times a game.”

Maria Kotas, So • 20gp, 21 pts, 15g, 6a, 30gb, 21dc, 20ct“Maria is a star in the making,” Teeter said. “She has a great chance to rank among the national leaders in a number of categories. We need her to use her lacrosse IQ, while her speed has the potential to dominate games.”

Meghan Cuddy, Fr • Baldwinsville, N.Y.“Meghan brings a lot of speed to our midfield,” Teeter said. “She has all the tools to put the ball into the back of the net through midfield transition.”

Tori Greco, Fr • Clarence, N.Y.“Tori is very athletic and may be used in key defensive matchups this season,” Teeter said. “Her work ethic is second to none.”

Tori Quinn, Fr • Orangeville, Ontario“Tori is a player that commits to getting every ground ball and draw control,” Teeter said. “She may be small in size but she is a pretty demanding defender that can excel on that side of the field.”

AttackWhile Oosting is anchoring a very experienced midfield unit, Quinn takes control of an attacking unit that needs to replace two starters. Taylor Gray and Brianne Laffey graduated after combining for 95 points, 63 goals and 32 assists during their senior campaign but the pieces are there for the Griffs to continue their dominance from the position.

“Our attack will once again be led by Carly Quinn, who is one of the best players in her position in the MAAC,” Teeter said. “After Carly, we need to see more production out of Kristy Wilensky and Meghan McGunigle to help fill the void left by Taylor and Brianne. Both players are very capable of being positive contributors

to our team. We also bring in two freshmen, who will gain valuable experience right away for us.”

The team’s leader up front, Quinn’s total of 65 points in 2011 are tied for the second most in the program’s history. She enters her senior campaign just 75 points shy of the program’s scoring record.

Carly Quinn, Sr • 20gp, 65 pts, 43g, 22a, 16gb, 17dc, 7ct“Carly needs to be the quarterback of our offense, really lead our younger feeders and distribute the ball to all of our top threats,” Teeter said. “Carly’s vision and lacrosse IQ are one of the best that I’ve ever coached.”

Kristy Wilensky, Sr • 15gp, 8 pts, 5g, 3a, 4gb, 1ct“Kristy needs to use her strengths to be a powerful player,” Teeter said. “If she finds ways to get open inside, she will be able to score goals this season.”

Meghan McGunigle, Jr • 13gp, 4g, 2gb, 5dc, 1ct (2010)“Meghan has an excellent shot and really excels at free positions,” Teeter said. “We need to find ways to get her more opportunities to shoot this season.”

Whitley Perry, Fr • Adams Center, N.Y.“Whitley gives us size and power from the feeding position,” Teeter said. “She is not afraid to take her defender 1-on-1 and has potential to develop into a premier attacker in our league.”

Natalie Wagaman • Penn Yan, N.Y.“Natalie is all about speed and transition,” Teeter said. “We are looking forward to seeing her add those skills to our depth this season.”

DefendersFor the second-straight season, the Griffs face the daunting task of replacing all four starting defenders from the previous year. The good news for Canisius is that the unit does return a number of players that received a lot of playing time and valuable playing experience in 2011 and the team’s depth in the midfield unit will bolster a young defense in 2012.

“In back-to-back seasons now, we have lost all our starting defenders,” Teeter said. “We are very young and there are a lot of playing minutes up for grab. We do have some options with our midfield being so strong to support with some upperclassmen and leadership on the defensive end.”

Mary Butlak, Sr • 5gp, 5gb, 1dc (2010)“Mary had a really good fall and was playing with a lot of confidence,” Teeter said. “We really need her to play with that confidence this spring. I’m hoping that she will take more of a leadership role this year.”

Meagan Hurley, Sr • 9pg, 1gb“If Meagan remains healthy and plays with confidence, she has the ability to make plays and defensive stops,” Teeter said.

Gabby Kotas, So • 14gp, 9gb, 1dc, 3ct“Gabby had a great fall and is progressing into a very tenacious defender,” Teeter said. “We will count on her a lot this season.”

Steph Schmalz, So • 12gp, 3gb, 3dc, 1ct“Steph is very effective when she keeps the game simple and lets her defensive instincts take over,” Teeter said.

Taylor Smith, So • 11gp, 1a, 2gb, 1dc, 1ct“Taylor excels at two-point plays and will start our transition to push the ball,” Teeter said.

Casey Depauw, Fr • Canandaigua, N.Y.“Casey has potential to be our top defender,” Teeter said. “She adds a lot of height to our defense and we will rely on her stick to help us move the ball to our midfielders.”

GoaltendersPerhaps the biggest challenge facing Canisius in 2012 is replacing Allison Daley in goal. For the first time since the 2007 season, a new player will be manning the circle for the Griffs this season. Looking to take over right where the three-time all-conference performer left off is junior Gina Molfetta.

“Losing Allison Daley in net, that is definitely some big shoes to fill that other teams think that we are not capable of doing,” Teeter said. “But I think we are going to surprise a lot of people in that area with Gina backstopping the team.”

Gina Molfetta, Jr • 10gp, 11.37 gaa, .383 sv pct.“Gina has been patient and has waited two years for this time to come,” Teeter said. “She has gained valuable experience by pushing Allison Daley to all-regional status. Now it is her time to show us what she has. Gina is not afraid to make plays. Her hand-eye coordination allows her to make up for her small stature.”

Kayla Scully, Fr • Rodman, N.Y.“Kayla is a completely different style of goaltender than Gina,” Teeter said. “She is more of a textbook-angle type of goalie and a true ball stopper.”

CoachesTeeter is in his 10th season leading the Golden Griffin program and is joined this season on the sideline by first-year assistants Allison Daley and Kate Faas. Daley moves to the coaching position after completing a successful four-year career as the Griffs’ goaltender, while Faas joins the program after playing for St. Bonaventure and Maryland, winning the 2010 NCAA Championship with the Terrapins.

“Any time you bring in a national championship winner like Kate Faas and a player with Allison Daley’s talents to your staff, it raises our level of play to new heights with those kind of voices in practice,” Teeter said.

WOMEN’S LAX • COACH TEETER

Since taking the reins of one of the nation’s worst programs, Scott Teeter has completely turned the fortunes of the Canisius College women’s lacrosse program. Now in his 10th season as Golden Griffin head coach, Teeter has guided Canisius from a team that averaged fewer than two wins per season to MAAC Champions in 2011.

Teeter’s efforts were fully realized during the 2011 campaign, leading the Griffs to the most successful year in program history. Canisius won

a school-record 14 games and capped the successful campaign with the program’s first conference title.

The Griffs also made their mark on the national scene, finishing the season with a final RPI ranking of 24 and ahead of perennial powers Notre Dame, Johns Hopkins, Richmond and Boston University. Goalkeeper Allison Daley became the first Canisius student-athlete to collect regional All-America honors, with a school-record seven Griffs earning All-MAAC accolades.

The success for the Golden Griffin women’s lacrosse team is even more remarkable knowing the rough starting position that Teeter was handed. Canisius won only 11 games and two conference matches in the program’s first seven seasons before Teeter made his mark. The 2005 MAAC Coach of the Year, Teeter is now the winningest coach in the conference’s history with 68 career victories.

To add to his successful 2011 campaign, Teeter also served as head coach of the Canadian Under-19 National Team for 22 months, leading the squad at the 2011 IFWLA World Championship in Hannover, Germany. Named the team’s coach in December 2009, Teeter guided Canada to a bronze-medal showing, the team’s best finish in the tournament.

The achievements under Teeter are not limited to just the 2011 campaign. The highlights include: • Teeter has recruited and coached two players who competed in the most recent Women’s

Lacrosse World Cup. He has also coached nine student-athletes who have participated in the Under-19 World Championship.

• Teeter has mentored four Griffs to Player of the Year accolades. Whitney Card was named the 2006 MAAC Offensive Player of the Year, while Elise Crawford, Alana Chan and Allison Daley were selected as the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2004, 2005 and 2010, respectively.

• A total of 34 players have earned All-MAAC accolades under Teeter’s guidance, including a school-record seven selections following the 2009, 2010 and 2011 campaigns.

• Teeter was named the league’s Coach of the Year in just his third season after leading the Griffs to an eight-win improvement in 2005.

• Overall, Canisius has qualified for 5-of-6 MAAC Tournament since the beginning of the 2006 season. The Class of 2011 became the first Griffs class to qualify for all four conference tournaments during their career, capping the run with the program’s first title in 2011.

Before coming to Canisius, Teeter served as an assistant women’s lacrosse coach at Buffalo State College in 2002, where he helped guide the program to its best-ever finish at 5-6. Prior to his work at Buffalo State, he served as a student-assistant coach and team manager for the Canisius women’s lacrosse team for four years. He helped with instruction during practices and also assisted with game-day operations.

Teeter was a four-year letterwinner for the Canisius College ice hockey team, graduating from the school in 2002. He played field lacrosse for his high school in Shelburne, Ontario, while also playing box lacrosse for the Orangeville Northmen in Western Ontario.

Teeter graduated from Canisius with a degree in physical education in 2002 and earned his master’s degree in physical education with a concentration in sport psychology and coaching from Canisius in 2004.

Allison DaleyAssistant Coach • First Season • Canisius ‘11

The most decorated player in the program’s history, Allison Daley is in her first season as assistant coach with the Golden Griffin women’s lacrosse team.

Daley anchored the Canisius defense during her career, serving as the team’s starting goalkeeper from 2008 to 2011. The MAAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2010, Daley earned all-conference accolades on three occasions, including two first-team selections. She also became the first player in the program’s history to earn regional All-America

accolades after being named to the IWLCA All-West/Midwest Second Team in 2011.

During her tenure, Daley set school records with 662 career saves and an 11.66 goals against average. She owns four of the top five single-season saves marks in the program’s history and also twice ranked inside the top 10 nationally in save percentage, placing seventh in 2011 and 10th in 2010.

The Peterborough, Ontario native finished her career with Canisius in style, earning MAAC Tournament MVP accolades and leading the Griffs to the program’s first conference championship in 2011.

Daley earned her bachelor’s degree from Canisius in psychology and is now pursuing her master’s in sport administration.

Kate FaasAssistant Coach • First Season • Maryland ‘10

A national championship winning player, Kate Faas is in her first season as an assistant coach with the Golden Griffin program.

A member of the Maryland Terrapins from 2008 to 2010, Faas capped her career by helping the team to the national title in her senior season. In 20 games, Faas recorded 21 points and 19 goals.

Prior to playing with Maryland, Faas spent two seasons with the nationally-ranked St. Bonaventure program, earning 2007 Atlantic-10

Player of the Year honors, while being named to the all-conference first team in both of her seasons. Overall, the West Henrietta, N.Y. native totaled 172 points, 142 goals and 30 assists during her four-year collegiate career.

After finishing her playing career, Faas spent the 2011 season serving as a volunteer assistant coach with Delaware.

Faas earned her bachelor’s degree in kinesiology in 2010. She is currently pursuing her master’s at Canisius in sport administration.

2011 IN REVIEW • WOMEN’S LAX

The 2011 season marked the most successful campaign in the history of the Golden Griffin women’s lacrosse program. The team set records and accomplished a number of firsts, highlighted by winning the MAAC Championship.

The success of the team did not come without challenges. Entering the year, the Griffs faced the daunting task of needing to replace the team’s leading scorer from the previous season in Ashley Curtis, who netted the third most goals in school history. In addition, all four Canisius defenders graduated from the 2010 season, leaving the Griffs with an inexperienced back line.

Right from the start Canisius was challenged with a difficult schedule, facing three nationally-recognized program. The Griffs opened the sea-son with No. 11 Vanderbilt and also faced No. 9 Stanford and Ohio State among their first four games. Against the Cardinal, Allison Daley recorded 13 stops and set the program’s career saves record.

The Griffs responded quickly from a 1-3 start to the season, tallying a school-record eight consecutive victories. The streak started with a 12-7 win against Binghamton before back-to-back one-goal victories versus Longwood and Robert Morris.

Canisius realized its full potential in its final weekend of non-conference play before starting MAAC action. Canisius hosted Connecticut and Duquesne, two teams the Griffs had never defeated.

Canisius opened the weekend with an 18-13 victory against the Huskies, marking not only the program’s first victory over Connecticut but also its first win against a Big East school. Taylor Gray set career highs with seven points and five goals, while becoming the fifth player in school history with 100 career points, to help the Griffs rally from an early three-goal deficit.

The Griffs then continued their winning ways with an 8-7 win against Duquesne. Daley stopped 15 shots to lead Canisius to victory, including 11-of-14 shots on goal in the first half.

The momentum carried over to the beginning of conference play as Canisius cruised to wins over Manhattan and Iona. Against the Jaspers, Carly Quinn matched a school record with eight goals to lead the Canisius offense.

The Griffs then stretched their winning streak to eight games, earning its first victory at defending conference champion Marist, 15-8. Quinn be-came the sixth player in school history to reach the 100-point plateau in the win.

All good things must come to an end and the team’s record-long winning streak ended as Canisius lost at Fairfield, 12-8. The Griffs led the Stags, who would tie a record for most consecutive MAAC regular-season victo-ries, in the second half but a late run gave the victory to Fairfield.

Canisius finished the regular season with a pair of dominating wins against conference rivals Siena (19-8) and Niagara (19-4) to clinch its fourth-straight MAAC Tournament bid. Megan Oosting joined Gray and Quinn in the 100-point club, while also setting the single-season draw controls record against Niagara. The Griffs also split a pair of non-conference games to finish the season, falling to No. 9 Albany and defeating local rival St. Bonaventure.

The most important weekend of the season for Canisius started a little shaky. In the MAAC Semifinals, Siena took a 4-1 lead over the Griffs but Canisius battled back and eventually earned an 11-9 victory to advance to its second MAAC Championship.

In the title game, Canisius never trailed en route to a 13-8 victory against Fairfield, winning the program’s first championship. Daley recorded 13 saves to anchor the victory and earned MAAC Tournament MVP honors. She was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Gray, Oosting, Theresa Walton and Maria Kotas.

The Griffs then had to face 20th-ranked and Atlantic-10 Champion Mas-sachusetts for the right to advance to the 16-team NCAA Tournament. The Minutewomen showed why they where nationally-ranked to start the game, jumping out to an early 5-0 lead but Canisius answered back and trailed by only one at the intermission, 6-5. Massachusetts, however, rebounded in the second half, taking advantage with a 5-0 run to earn the 16-8 victory.

Despite the loss to Massachusetts, Canisius set a number of school re-cords. The team’s 14 wins and .700 winning percentage are both the best in the program’s record book, while the Class of 2011 completed their careers with 41 victories, the most in school history. Gray also finished the season with a program-best 69 points, while Oosting’s 81 draw controls are the most in the school’s record book.

A number of Griffs also earned postseason recognition. Daley became the first player in the program’s history to garner regional All-America accolades, earning second-team IWCLA All-West/Midwest honors. She was also joined on the All-MAAC First Team by Oosting and Quinn, while Gray, Kotas, Jackie Loson and Lindsey Morgan all earned second-team selection.

Allison Daley led the Griffs during to their first conference title in 2011. The senior goaltender earned MAAC Championship MVP honors and

became the first Griff to earn regional All-America honors.

Highlights Under Head Coach Scott Teeter• Won the program’s first title in 2011.

• Won 67 games in the last seven years – including a school-record 14 wins in 2011 – after totaling only 11 victories in the first seven seasons of the program. No coach in the MAAC has won more games in the last seven seasons than Teeter.

• After playing at Canisius, two former players participated in the most recent Women’s Lacrosse World Cup.

• Earned the first five trips to the MAAC Tournament in the program’s history, including four-straight invitations from 2008 to 2011.

• Four student-athletes have been honored with Player of the Year honors. Elise Crawford, Alana Chan and Allison Daley earned Defensive Player of the Year accolades in 2004, 2005 and 2010, while Whitney Card was named the MAAC Offensive Player of the Year in 2006.

• 34 Players have earned All-MAAC accolades, including a school-record seven selections the last three seasons.

The Demske Sports Complex underwent a facelift during the summer of 2008, replacing the old AstroTurf with FieldTurf. The

A comprehensive program on life skills provides student-athletes with educational experiences. Service programs preparing students for the demands of a well-balanced lifestyle are also provided. Academic Advisor for Athletics ServicesThe Academic Advisor for Athletics provides the following support services to best serve the student-athletes at Canisius:

• Provide effective academic advising; conduct individual advising appointments with student-athletes who have concerns abut their major choice, progress toward graduation, grades, or any other aspects that may impede their success toward graduation and NCAA eligibility.

• Pay particular attention to the “at-risk” student-athletes and students who have not yet chosen a major course of study.

• Schedule meetings with designated student-athletes to assist in the monitoring of academic progress.

• Assist student-athletes with the development of academic recovery plans.

• Develop travel contracts for student-athletes to share with their course instructors.

• Provide assistant with scholarship and award applications.

Study Hall/ Tutorial ProgramIn order to assist student-athletes in achieving optimal academic performance, the Athletic Department provides a Study Hall Program. Study hall is open to all student-athletes and is an opportunity to do academic work at consistent time in a quiet place where tutors are available to answer questions and concerns.

Study hall is to be used for course work only. A total of six hours each week are required for all first semester freshmen and first semester transfers.

Tutoring Services The college offers free tutoring to all Canisius College students. If you have any questions regarding a tutor, or need assistance setting up a time to meet with someone from the College’s Tutorial Program, contact Tim Paul, Academic Advisor for Athletics.

Tradition of Excellence2010-11 Canisius Athletics Highlights• The women’s lacrosse team won its first MAAC

Championship with a 13-8 victory against rival Fairfield. Head Coach Scott Teeter also led the Canadian Under-19 National Team to a bronze medal at the World Championship.

• Shortstop Sean Jamieson of the baseball team earned 2010-11 MAAC Male Student-Athlete of the Year.

• Jamieson was also one of three Griffs selected in the 2011 MLB Draft. The Oakland Athletics picked Jamieson, while pitchers Chris Cox and Shane Davis were both selected by the Toronto Blue Jays.

• Adam Jones (third overall) and Dan Coates (eighth) of the men’s lacrosse team were both selected in the first round of the NLL Draft. Canisius was the only school in the country with two first-round selections.

• Cory Conacher of the hockey team earned Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award All-America First Team honors, leading all candidates nationally in a fan vote.

• A total of 24 Canisius student-athletes were named to the all-conference team, including a record-setting four Players of the Year.

• Drew Pettit and Jamieson of the baseball team were both named to the Capital One Academic All-America Team.

Department of AthleticsWhat is a Griffin?

The Griffin is a mythical creature of supposed gigantic size that has the head, forelegs and wings of an eagle and the hindquarters, tail and ears of a lion. They are well known for their speed, ability to fly and having eyes like an eagle as well as the strength and courage of a lion. Griffins have been known for centuries as symbols of strength and vigilance, have been called “The Hounds of Zeus” in Greek mythology and are said to have mastery of both the land and sky. They are thought to be from India, where the natives of the land made their talons and claws into drinking cups because the talon of a Griffin was said to detect poison in a liquid. Griffins would find gold in the mountains and line their nests with it and as a result, were forced to become great guardians of the nests to keep the hunters away. According to Charles A. Brady in Canisius College The First Hundred Years, “Though the problems of when and where the Griffin began his reign as King Herald of the Canisius College of Arms are not easily settled, the whence is simple to establish. Our Griffin flew to us from the prow of LaSalle’s lost Griffon, the Flying Dutchman of the Great Lakes, which disappeared after making a safe voyage from the Niagara River to the Strait of Detroit. LaSalle’s ill-fated caravel, the first ship ever built on America’s inland seas, with its 45 tons and five cannons, had its beakhead adorned ‘with a flying Griffin, and an eagle above it,’ in honor of the two heraldic beasts on the armorial bearing of the great Frontenac.” The Griffin became the symbol for Canisius athletics in the mid-1930s. Steve Weller wrote in The Buffalo News Jan. 22, 1962, “You can have your Chihuahuas, Piranhas, Horned Frogs and Iguanas. The best all-around athletic mascot in business today has to be the beast adopted by Canisius College – the Golden Griffin.”

John J. Hurley assumed his position as the 24th president of Canisius College on July 1, 2010. He is the first lay president in Canisius College’s 140-year history.

As president, he has led the college in the development of a new strategic plan approved by the college’s Board of Trust-ees and entitled A Transformational Education: The Strategic Plan for Canisius College. He has begun the renovation of the former HealthNow building on Main Street into a comprehensive state-of-the-art interdisciplinary science center, a $68 million capital project that will be completed in phases. He has also started the conversion of the Rev. Andrew L. Bouwhuis, S.J. Library into a comprehensive technology-based learning commons. He has announced the Hamlin Park Initiative through which houses owned by the college in the immediate neighborhood are being renovated and sold to buyers who commit to being owner occupiers. The college is also nearing its $90 million goal for the largest campaign in college history, A Legacy of Leadership: The Campaign for Canisius College.

A 1978 alumnus of Canisius, President Hurley served as executive vice president of the college from 2007 to 2010 and vice president for college relations from 1997 to 2010. In these positions, he oversaw the college’s advancement and external relations and managed institutional strategic planning, integrated marketing, and legal and compliance issues. He also served as secretary to the Canisius College Board of Trustees.

President Hurley has played a significant leadership role in the college’s investment in the campus since 1994, which now totals more than $150 million. He was the architect of the college’s innovative Employer Assisted Housing program, which offers employees grants in the form of forgivable loans to assist them with the purchase of homes near the college’s central Buffalo campus.

A native of Buffalo, President Hurley is a graduate of St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute in Kenmore; Canisius College (BA 1978 summa cum laude, English/history); and the University of Notre Dame Law School (JD 1981). He practiced law for 16 years, including 13 years at the Buffalo firm of Phillips, Lytle, Hitchcock, Blaine & Huber, where he concentrated his practice in the areas of secured lending, bankruptcy and insolvency. President Hurley serves on numerous educational as-sociations and as the representative of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference’s representative on the NCAA’s President’s Advisory Group. He serves as Buffalo Bishop Edward U. Kmiec’s appointee on the board of Fidelis Care New York, a $2 billion health maintenance organization that serves the poor in New York State. He and his wife, Maureen, are chairs of the Bishop’s Council of the Laity for the Diocese of Buffalo. President Hurley is also a member of the Buffalo Philharmonic Board of Trustees.

Inducted as a Distinguished Alumnus of Canisius College in 2002, President Hurley is also a recipient of the college’s LaSalle Medal (1996), which is the highest honor conferred upon an alumnus for service to alma mater. St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute inducted him into its Signum Fidei Society (1998) and the University of Notre Dame presented President Hurley with its Exemplar Award (1997). In 1990, and again in 1997, President Hurley received the HOME’s (Housing Op-portunities Made Equal) James Crawford and Director’s Awards for outstanding service to the cause of fair housing.

Dr. Ellen ConleyVice President for Student Affairs

Ellen O. Conley, PhD, a member of the Canisius Community since 1970, was named vice president for student affairs in 1998. One of her many accomplishments in her role as vice president includes spearheading the upgrade of the athletics program at the college.

Dr. Conley earned a bachelor’s degree from Slippery Rock State College (1967), advanced education degrees from the University of Pittsburgh (1968) and Buffalo State (1973) and a doctorate in higher education from the University at Buffalo (1981).

During her tenure as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Conley supported the formation of the School of Education and Human Services, developed a mentoring program for new faculty, initiated the development of majors in criminal justice and environmental science and guided the initiative to implement a Master of Science in Organizational Communication and Development. She also established the Fine Arts Department and facilitated the development of MusiCanisius, which has since evolved into the ArtsCanisius program.

While acting dean, she coordinated the promotion of the school’s graduate education program to the Canadian market and guided the implementation of the Master in Sport Administration.

From 1987-89, Dr. Conley was the assistant director of athletics for women’s sports and financial aid, and from 1987-90, she was the athletic scholarship coordi-nator. Under her direction, the women’s athletic program was formed and grew from one club level team to seven varsity teams. In addition, she implemented and monitored an athletic scholarship program for men’s and women’s non-revenue producing sports.

From 1982-1990 Dr. Conley served as chair of the undergraduate Physical Education Major Program and Coordinator of the Physical Education Graduate Pro-gram. In 1989, she developed alternative curricular tracks for physical education majors to enhance enrollment, and in 1986, she co-wrote the New York State Professional Preparation Council’s position paper for “Strengthening Teaching in New York State.”

Bill MaherDirector of Athletics

Named Director of Athletics in May 2005, Bill Maher is in his seventh year back in the Blue and Gold.

Since taking over at Canisius, the athletic teams have won 25 conference or regional championships, with a number of programs winning championships or setting records for most wins in a season. The Canisius College campus has undergone a number of renovations for its athletic facilities. The Golden Grif-fins have also achieved academic honors on the regional and national level.

• The women’s lacrosse team won the program’s first-ever MAAC Champion-ship, playing in the 2011 NCAA Tournament. The Griffs have qualified for the postseason five times in the last six years after never making the MAAC Tournament before the 2006 season.

• The women’s soccer team won the first regular-season title in program history in 2010, appearing in the champion-ship game of the MAAC Tournament, and set a program-record for wins (14) for the second consecutive year.

• The softball team has advanced to the NCAA Tournament three times in the last five years and 11 times in the last 17 seasons.

• The baseball program has won two MAAC regular-season titles since 2008 and ranks third in the Northeast in wins (142) in the last four seasons.

• The synchronized swimming program won its 14th consecutive ECAC Championship in 2011 and also finished third at the U.S. Collegiate Championships for the fourth consecutive season.

• The 2008-09 women’s basketball team set the program’s Division I record with 24 wins and advanced to the Women’s NIT for the first time in program history. • The 2008 men’s lacrosse team advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history and won a share of the regular-season MAAC Championship for

the second time in three seasons. • The 2006 volleyball team set a program record for victories, the 2008 team qualified for a four-team MAAC Tournament for the first five since 1994 and during the past

five seasons has had the most wins during any five-year stretch in program history. • The hockey program has advanced in the postseason each of the last two years, including a 6-3 win over rival Niagara last season. The program has graduated two of the

most successful classes in program history during the past two years, including the program’s first NHL signee. • At the 2011 MAAC Championships, the men’s swimming and diving team scored the most points in program history while the women’s team scored the most points since

1997. The Golden Griffin men won the program’s first individual titles since 1997. The men’s team beat Niagara in a dual meet in 2010 for the first time in more than 10 years while the Canisius women beat Niagara at the 2009 MAAC Championship.

• The Class of 2009 was the winningest class in program history for the men’s soccer program. • The men’s basketball program has won 15 games in back-to-back seasons for the first time since the 1995-96 and 1996-97 seasons. The class of 2011 earned its under-

graduate degrees by the end of its junior season. • The cross country teams have each won five consecutive Little Three Championships. The Golden Griffin women have taken second at the conference meet each of the

last two seasons. Both teams have beaten Niagara each of the last four years at the MAAC Championship. • The golf team has finished fifth at the MAAC Championships each of the past three seasons with Drew Creighton tying for first place at the 2009 MAAC Championship.

During the past six seasons, 28 student-athletes have won conference player or rookie of the year awards, including six during the 2010-11 season. On the academic level during that timeframe, Canisius has had 19 student-athletes recognized on the district level as Capital One CoSIDA All-Academic, including five Academic All-Americans during the last two years. Canisius has claimed the Battle of the Bridge and won the Canal Cup in three of the last four seasons, which is an all-sports competition with rival Niagara University.

Maher has overseen numerous renovations to the Koessler Athletic Center and the Demske Sports Complex. A new Center for Athletic Training opened in May 2007. New locker rooms were constructed for all female teams and finished in 2008 while the men and women’s basketball teams each received new locker rooms in the summer of 2008. The Demske Sports Complex received a $1.7 million facelift with the installation of new A-Turf as well as new scoreboards. New offices for coaches along with new locker rooms for all of the men’s teams were constructed in 2010.

Maher is the MAAC’s representative to the NCAA Legislative Council, which has one representative from each of the 31 Division I conferences.

A Canisius graduate and former assistant athletic director at the school, Maher spent seven years at the University at Buffalo and served as the Bulls’ interim athletic director from 2003-05.

During his tenure as the interim athletic director at Buffalo, Maher helped UB Athletics oversee $3.6 million in capital improvements to its athletic facilities, restructure the school’s Blue & White Club fund drive for athletics, which generated $1 million during the 2003-04 season, and develop marketing campaigns which increased attendance at athletic events.

He also oversaw the development of the men’s basketball program, which set a school record for victories and earned the first postseason bid in school history with an invitation to the 2005 National Invitation Tournament. Under his watch, the Bulls’ RPI increased from 284 in 2003 to as high as 34 during the 2004-05 season.

Maher was a four-year letterwinner on the Canisius College football team from 1985-88 and earned All-America honorable mention honors as a senior. He received his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Canisius in 1989 and his master’s degree in sport management from East Stroudsburg University in 1990. Following an internship with the New York Knicks, Maher returned to Canisius in 1991, becoming the assistant athletic director for compliance in 1994.

He became the director of compliance at the University at Buffalo in 1998, where he moved up the ranks and was named senior associate athletic director in 2002. In that role, he managed the day-to-day operations of the Division of Athletics, including the direct supervision of Buffalo’s football and men’s and women’s basketball programs, in addition to the office of compliance and the office of student-athlete services.

Maher resides in East Amherst with his wife, Kristin, and sons, Danny and David.

Traci MurphySenior Women’s Administrator/Associate Athletic Director

Traci Murphy is in her seventh year as Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman’s Adminis-trator for the Golden Griffins. Murphy joined the Canisius staff after spending seven seasons at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

Murphy is responsible for all NCAA rules enforcement of Canisius’ 16 Division I athletic programs in addition to all areas of student-athlete wel-fare. She supervises compliance, academic counseling, strength and con-ditioning and athletic training. She also oversees the Life Skills program, and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Murphy is the sport supervisor for women’s soccer, men’s soccer, volley-ball, women’s cross country, men’s cross country and softball. She serves on MAAC committees for Athletic Administration, Finance, Gender and Minority Issues, Women’s Basketball and chairs the MAAC Swimming and Diving Committee. She also organizes the annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) at Canisius and helped found the WNY Girls in Sports Program. The program, in collaboration with the City of Buffalo Public Schools, area colleges and universities, the Buffalo Bills, focuses specifically on young girls (ages 9-12) and their involvement in sports.

Murphy began her career in 1992 as associate head athletic trainer at St Mary’s and moved to ULM in 1998. She added the responsibility of senior woman administrator in 2001 which involved the monitoring of women’s sports and mentoring the SAAC.

In July 2003, she was promoted to the position of director of academics, compliance and student-athlete services. Murphy worked to develop and implement an enhanced academic development and compliance program for ULM’s student-athletes and the athletics department. Prior to ULM, Murphy served five years as the head athletic trainer at St. Mary’s College of Maryland.

She is a 1989 graduate of West Chester University with a bachelor’s de-gree in health and physical education. In 1992, Murphy earned a master’s degree in health education from the University of Arkansas.

The Maryland native and her husband, Pat, a vice-principal at Amherst Central High School, have two children, Sean (10) and Sarah (6).

John MaddockAssociate Athletic Director - External Affairs

John Maddock is in his 31st year with Canisius College athletics and his 15th as associate athletic director for external affairs. Originally hired as the Golden Griffins’ sports information director, the native of Washington, Ill, was named an assistant athletic director prior to the 1987-88 season and moved into his current position in

1997. Maddock is responsible for corporate partnerships, marketing, promotions and merchandise sales, licensing, special fund-raising events and oversees the op-erations of the ticket office and athletic communications. Maddock is the sport supervisor for hockey, baseball, swimming and diving and synchronized swimming.

The 56-year-old Maddock oversaw the operation of the department of athletics during Spring 2005 before Bill Maher was named the director of athletics. Mad-dock also assisted the MAAC with plans for its 25th Anniversary celebration during the 2005-06 athletic season.

He chaired the search committee for the Griffs’ head swimming and diving coach in 2008, head football coach in 2000 and men’s soccer coach in 1998. He serves on the College’s Hall of Fame and the MLK Awards Selection Committees and oversaw the development of the athletic department’s current logo. He was also instrumental in planning the season-long 100-year anniversary celebration for men’s basketball in 2003-04.

Maddock arrived at Canisius in July 1981 after spending two-and-a-half years as the administrative assistant to the athletic director at Brockport State College. Prior to his job at Brockport, he was the ticket manager for the Atlanta Braves Triple-A farm club in Richmond, Va.

A graduate of Western Illinois University, Maddock received his bachelor’s de-gree in recreation and park administration in 1976 and his master’s degree in athletic administration in 1978. In addition to his duties at Canisius, Maddock is an active member of the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Adminis-trators (NACMA) and the former chair of the College Sports Information Direc-tors of America (CoSIDA) Committee on Committees. He also served on the Co-SIDA Academic All-America Committee and is a Vice President for the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame and is a member of the MAAC Baseball Committee.

Maddock spent two seasons as the public relations director for the North At-lantic Conference and served as the host for the 1990 ECAC-SIDA conference at the Buffalo Hilton. He chaired the Baseball Committee for the 1993 World Uni-versity Games and was the assistant media coordinator for the 2000 NCAA Di-vision I men’s basketball opening round games played at Buffalo’s HSBC Arena.

Maddock was honored in 1998 by ECAC-SIDA with the Irving T. Marsh Award for contributions, dedication and excellence in the field of collegiate sports information.

John and his wife, Priscilla, reside in Snyder with their daughters Mackenzie and Mikaela.
