Season OutlookWith the 2009 season set to get underway, the Newberry College volleyball team is prepping to improve on last year’s marks and exceed expectations yet again.

The 2009 season will be Newberry’s second season with head coach David Nicholson at the helm. In Nicholson’s first season, he was able to lead the team to an impressive 18-13 record overall, despite losing three of the team’s top starters from the year before. The team finished 8-8 in conference play and placed fifth in the South Atlantic Conference.

“Our goal is to continue to grow as a team and improve on last year’s results,” Nicholson stated. “We want to continue to hone our strengths as well as work a little harder on some of our weaknesses.”

Nicholson and his team have high hopes of topping last season’s results.

“The players and I are getting increasingly comfortable with each other having been together for a year,” said Nicholson. “I am learning more and more about them and they are learning more and more about me. I’m getting a better idea of what their strengths are and how to play to them,” he concluded.

The scarlet and gray will have to work hard to fill the void left by outside hitter Priscila Sales. Sales set Newberry’s single season record in 2008 with 418 kills.

“I’m not going to focus on individuals,” Nicholson said. “We’re going to work together as a team and get contributions from everyone.”

Rising senior Lorena Maia looks to lead the team in 2009 and continue to build on the success that the team has seen since her arrival. The outside hitter from Belo Horizonte, Brazil, led the 2008 team in service aces and blocks and was second on the team in points and kills.

The team will also enjoy the return of Fernanda Frey, a team leader in 2007 who did not see action in 2008 due to injury. Despite being unable to compete, Frey stood by the team as an assistant coach during the 2008 campaign. Though her contributions were great, her teammates eagerly await her participation on the court.

Season OutlookBoth of these athletes were named to the Preseason all-SAC teams.

Also coming back in 2009 will be junior setter Brianna Blakely. The native Texan led the team in assists in 2007 with 643 and again in 2008 with 962, taking her from 10th in 2007 to fourth in 2008 in the Newberry record books. Blakely looks to climb even higher up Newberry’s all-time record book in 2009.

Newberry will also benefit from returning seniors Kember Lichtie, Niki Hroblak and Dani Hroblak along with juniors Nadia Andrade and Kara Harris. The scarlet and gray will return six starters in all. These experienced players will be joined by a recruiting class of nine newcomers who will add height and depth to the lineup.

The season kicks off on August 28, with the Tusculum Tournament in Greeneville, Tenn. Newberry College will also compete in the Limestone Labor Day Tournament in Gaffney, S.C., on September 4-5, and the Alabama-Huntsville Tournament in Huntsville, Ala., on September 11-12.

Newberry will enjoy hosting 10 home matches this season. In 2008, the scarlet and gray were extremely successful on cashing in on home court advantage, going an impressive 8-3 in Eleazer Arena. The home opener will be on September 25 against Mars Hill. Senior Night will be held on November 6 as Newberry plays host to North Greenville. The team will look to give the home-town fans even more to cheer about in the 2009 campaign.

“We’ve always had a big advantage when we play at home,” Nicholson claimed. “Our fans are great. Coaches tell me they don’t like coming here because of the loud crowds. It’s a tough place to play.”

Conference play opens on September 15 with the opener at Brevard, a team Newberry swept twice in 2008.

October 2-3 could well become the most important weekend of the season, with Newberry hosting Catawba and Wingate on consecutive nights. Wingate and Catawba combined to beat Newberry 15 sets to 2 in 2008 on their way to finishing first and second in the SAC, respectively. A solid performance in these matches could better position Newberry to contend for the conference in 2009.

“Sure, it may be a difficult schedule,” Nicholson said. “We’re excited for the opportunity though. I think we’re a tougher team and we’re eager to face the challenge.”

head coachDavid Nicholson enters his second season as the head women’s volleyball coach at Newberry College.

Nicholson saw succes in 2008, his first season with Newberry. He led the team to a 18-13 overall record and achieved eight conference wins, a first for Newberry since joining the South Atlantic Conference in 1997.

Nicholson came to Newberry in 2008 after a brief stint in the spring of 2008 as the head coach at the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College.

Prior to his time at UTB/TSC, Nicholson spent three seasons as the head coach at Union College in Barbourville, Ky. Under Nicholson’s tutelage, the Lady Bulldogs earned their highest win total in school history in the 2007 season with a 34-15 mark and an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) regular season championship.

Nicholson was named the 2007 Coach of the Year in both the AAC and NAIA Region XII. The 2007 squad boasted the AAC Player of the Year, Setter of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Region XII Player of the Year. The Bulldogs also had three first team and one second team all-AAC selections, with the three all-conference players also earning all-region accolades.

In 2006, the Lady Bulldogs recorded their sixth 20-win season in going 21-17 overall and 12-6 in Appalachian Athletic Conference play. Nicholson has had one player earn NAIA All-American Honorable Mention honors, two NAIA Setters of the Week nods, three all-conference first team selections, three all-region first team selections and two conference all-freshman team selections.

Nicholson came to Union after spending the previous two seasons as an assistant at Western Carolina (N.C.) University, a NCAA Division I program. During that time, the Catamounts went 28-33 overall.

Prior to his tenure at Western Carolina, Nicholson compiled an extensive high school coaching career. He first served as the head coach at Crescent High School, in Port Angeles, Wash., from 1992-95, taking over a program which had not seen a victory in over five years. In his third season as the coach there, the team was at the top of its conference.

From 1995-97, Nicholson served as the freshman volleyball coach at Rainier High School, in Rainier, Ore., and then was hired as the head coach at Clatskanie High School, in Clatskanie, Ore., in 1997. While there, he guided his team to a league championship and a sixth place finish in the state. He followed that up with a seventh place finish at the state level the following year.

In July of 2000, Nicholson served as the assistant volleyball coach at Murphy High School in Hayesville, N.C. After his stint with Murphy, Nicholson was appointed the athletic director and head volleyball coach of Hiwassee Dam High School, in 2001. He was involved with all aspects of the program in this new position from scheduling to transportation of the teams.

Nicholson graduated from Western Carolina in 2005 and received his master’s degree in Education from Union in December of 2006.

Nicholson is married to the former Jennifer Rogers of Murphy, N.C. They celebrated the birth of their first son, Jacob Reed Nicholson, on August 3, 2009.
