ADMINISTRATION

Dr. Mitchell (Mick) M. Zais has been president of Newberry College since August of 2000. He earned an Engineer-ing Degree from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point; a Master of Arts degree in military history from the School for Advanced Military Studies at Leavenworth, Kansas; and Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees in social psychology and organizational behavior from the University of Washington. He is also a graduate of the National Defense University, Washington, D.C., where he was a post-doctoral research fellow in national security affairs. Dr. Zais has been appointed by Governor Mark Sanford to represent the state’s 20 private colleges and universities on the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education and to represent South Carolina on the Southern Region Educa-tional Board. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Newberry Opera House Foundation and the Southeastern Region of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Dr. Zais has written and published extensively in the fields of organizational behavior, curriculum design, stress, military history and doctrine, and leadership and management, in such professional journals as the Journal of Applied Psychol-ogy, Armed Forces Journal International, Military Review, Parameters, etc. His opinion-editorial pieces, written while

President of Newberry College, have appeared in newspapers across the country. Before becoming Newberry College’s 20th president, Dr. Zais served his country for over 30 years as an officer in United States Army, attain-ing the rank of brigadier general. As an assistant professor at West Point, he taught management consulting, organizational behavior, and leadership. He has also served as an internal management consultant to the Army. A paratrooper and Ranger, Dr. Zais served in a wide variety of infantry units, in Vietnam, the United States, and Korea. He commanded two rifle companies, an infantry battalion, a light infantry brigade, and served as deputy commanding general, Fort Riley, Kansas. His staff experi-ence is primarily in military plans and operations, having worked as chief of operations, plans, and training for an infantry battalion and divi-sion; war plans officer for a corps; and Chief of War Plans for the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff. Dr. Zais was a White House aide and served in Panama as executive assistant to the four-star commander of all U.S. forces in Central and South America. In Kuwait, he was commanding general of U.S. and Allied forces. He also served as commanding general of Operation Pro-vide Refuge, the task force that cared for the 4000 Kosovo refugees who entered the United States. Prior to coming to Newberry College, Zais was the Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army Reserve Command, the headquarters that administers the �84,000 part-time Reservists, 9,000 civilian employees, and ��,000 full-time military members of the Army Reserve. Dr. Zais’s military awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Ranger, Airborne, and Combat Infantryman’s Badges, and the South Carolina Meritorious Service Medal. His wife, the former Susan Fincher, a graduate of the University of South Carolina, is from Columbia. Newberry College’s first graduate, James E. Houseal, class of �869, is Susan’s great-great-great uncle. Her great-great grandfather, William Houseal, founder and editor of the Newberry Observer, received an honorary degree from Newberry College in �9�6. The Zaises have two children. Bradley,24, is an infantry veteran of Iraq. Ashley, 22, is the former Miss South Carolina USA.

Brad Edwards was introduced as Athletic Director at Newberry College on May �8, 2009.Prior to coming to Newberry, he served as vice president of IMI Resort Holdings, Inc., after five years as associate ath-letic director at the University of South Carolina. He served as USC’s senior associate athletic director from July 2003 to March 2006. Edwards, who played free safety for the Gamecocks and played in the National Football League for nine sea-sons, is currently responsible for the recruiting, hiring and training of sales executives and sales directors for IMI’s resort properties across North America, Latin America and the Caribbean. He also assists with the IMI PGA Tour Player program and was responsible for the construction of IMI’s New York City office. In his time at South Carolina, he served as the athletic department’s chief financial officer and was responsible for the day-to-day oversight and management of all business functions. He oversaw the department’s budget, business operations for Williams Brice Stadium, the Colonial Center and Sarge Frye Field, new facility design, development, and construction, all venue concessions and food service, department advertising and multimedia rights, coordination of

bowl travel, and many other operational aspects of the department. He also assisted in securing major financial gifts and executive suite licenses. He joined the South Carolina athletic department as assistant athletic director for development in July �999 and was named associate athletic director in October 200�. He transitioned to senior associate athletic director in July 2003. Edwards played free safety in the NFL for nine seasons after being drafted in the second round of the �988 draft by the Minnesota Vi-kings. He also played with the Washington Redskins and Atlanta Falcons and was a starter with the Redskins’ Super Bowl XXVI championship team.

The Newberry women’s soccer team will enter the 2009 season with the focus of South Atlantic Conference success in the team’s second year under head coach Karrie Miller. Newberry finished tied for fifth in the SAC in Miller’s first year at the helm and they will look to climb up the ranks with a strong core of young talent and seasoned lead-ership.

“We’re more familiar with each other, in terms of the players knowing what they’re responsible for and my awareness of what they can each bring,” Miller said. “We’re one step closer to the process of the team coming together.”

With four seniors returning, the team will need to emphasize the balance of experience and youth to find success. Newberry has plenty of youth to go around: Nine freshmen will and �0 sophomores will wear the Newberry shield in 2009. A large recruit-ing class from 2008 has acclimated to the team and will be counted on to carry some of the load this season.

“My first class has become better,” said Miller. “They have a better sense of my expectations and the progression has become a lot more real and visible after last year.”

Though youth can give way to mistakes, Miller has begun building an accountability structure that promotes teamwork and responsibility. After one year as coach, that structure is starting to take shape.

“We’re young, but we have a comfortable re-lationship between the coaching staff and team and we have the added benefit of leadership from the upperclassmen,” Miller said.

The season begins on the road at Coker College on August 27 but the scarlet and gray will play the four of the first six matches at the Newberry Soccer Complex before opening the SAC season at Mars Hill on September �6.

“Our schedule sets us up to peak at the right time,” Miller said. “Each game prepares us for the next one, and that’s a big plus during conference play.”

Including the road game at Mars Hill, six of the next eight matches take place away from home. Those contests on the road will help prepare the team for what will literally be a home stretch: the final five games of the season take place at New-berry, capped with a Halloween test against unan-imous preseason SAC favorite Carson-Newman.

“We tend to be successful at home, people

don’t want to play here,” Miller said. “It’s a great place to play and hopefully we can capitalize on that advantage.”

The team will rely on preseason all-SAC first-team member Amberly Fowler (Taylors, S.C.) and preseason all-SAC second teamers Allie Johns (Lexington, S.C.) and Sara Geisman (Middleburg Heights, Ohio) to step up on both offense and de-fense. With three dedicated defenders graduat-ing in 2008, Newberry can find comfort in the fact that many players on the roster have the ability to play in different areas on the pitch.

“We have a lot of versatility,” Miller said. “That’s been another focus of mine in training and recruit-ing.”

Fowler had a productive season in the Newber-ry midfield and earned 2008 all-SAC first team hon-ors. She will be joined in the midfield and up front by experienced players in senior forward Lindsey Landgrebe (Springfield, Ill.), senior midfielder Mi-chaela Peach (Tadcaster, North Yorkshire, Eng-land) and senior midfielder Sara Griffith (Marietta, Ga.). Sophomore Lora Moore (Raleigh, N.C.) will likely help on the score sheet. Moore showed a knack for offense in her first year, tallying 10 points in 2008 as a true freshman.

Senior Sara Geisman will help lead the defen-sive effort. She brings plenty of game action knowl-edge, leading Newberry in minutes played last year. Goalkeeper Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.) will back up the line in net. Rhoades enjoyed one of the best seasons in Newberry goalkeeper history last year as a freshman, posting five shutouts and compiling a �.�9 GAA. She will be joined by sopho-more Megan Hrenchir (Lawrence, Kan.), who re-corded a �.47 GAA in four matches in 2008.

Miller’s recruiting class features nine freshman in 2009. Miller shows a strong interest and belief in the region’s talent, as eight hail from South Carolina and one from North Carolina. Though not all of the players will play up front, many have the ability to go after the goal–and all will have the opportunity to start.

“I tried to work toward a more attacking-orient-ed recruiting class this year,” Miller said. “I don’t mean attacking in terms of only scoring goals, but creating chances and scoring opportunities.”

Newberry may have a large number of under-classmen on its roster, but with a more familiar en-vironment and strong talent, the focus on SAC suc-cess remains steadfast.

Karrie Miller enters her second year as head coach of the Newberry women’s soccer team after a successful first sea-son. Miller led the team to a 8-9-� overall record and a 4-4 mark in South Atlantic Conference play in her first year as head coach, guiding three players to spots on the All SAC first and second teams. In 2008, Miller arrived at Newberry with eight seasons of NCAA Division I head coaching experience, all in the state of South Carolina. She was the inaugural head coach for the programs at Charleston Southern University and Coastal Car-olina University. Miller earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Behavioral Sci-ence from Erskine College in Due West, S.C., in �990 and then graduated from Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, N.C., with a Masters degree in Physical Education in �992. While at Erskine, she was a three-time NAIA All-American for the Lady Fleet and made the NAIA All-East Team four times. Miller was also selected to the NAIA All-Tournament National Team in �987 and �989. She was inducted into Erskine’s Ath-letic Hall of Fame during the fall of 200�. Miller began her college coaching career at Gardner-Webb, where she served as an assistant coach from �990 to �992. She then accepted the position of head coach at Charleston Southern.After spending the �992-93 academic year preparing the Lady Buccaneer program for competition, Miller led the squad to a combined 24-�3-� record over the next two sea-

sons. In Charleston Southern’s first year of competition and her first as a head coach, Miller was named the Big South Conference Co-Coach of the Year. After her success at Charleston Southern, Miller accepted an assistant coaching position at South Carolina and helped guide the Lady Gamecocks through their first three seasons of competition. She then moved to Alabama and helped the Crimson Tide to the Western Division Championship in the Southeastern Conference and a bid to the �998 NCAA Tour-nament. In �999, Miller returned to the Palmetto State to begin the women’s soccer program at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, S.C. She served as head coach through the 2005 season, earning a 47-50-�6 record in six seasons in charge of the Lady Chanticleers. She was also named Big South Conference Coach of the Year in 2000 and 2003 for a total of three BSC Coach of the Year awards. Her 2003 squad finished with a record of 10-9-2 overall and were the Big South regular season champions. Miller’s Coastal squads were named an Academic All-Ameri-can team by the NSCAA in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005. Throughout her coaching career, Miller has been heav-ily involved with the Olympic Development Program in both South Carolina and Alabama, serving as the Program Direc-tor in South Carolina from �995 to �998. She was the founder and director of the Karrie Miller Wom-en’s Soccer Camp from 2000 to 2006, and has served as co-director for multiple camps throughout the state.

Ashleigh Mayer enters her first season as an assistant coach for the Newberry women’s soccer team in 2009.

Mayer, a 2009 Newberry graduate with a degree in Business, played for the women’s team from 2005-2008, including a season playing for head coach Karrie Miller in 2008. Her experience and knowledge of the play-ers and coach will assist Newberry in improving on a competitive 2008 campaign that saw the team finish 8-9-1 overall and 4-4 in South Atlantic Conference play.

“Ashleigh comes in with an understanding of Newberry women’s soc-cer and the tradition behind it,” said Miller. “Her perspective as a player and season playing for me will make her a good fit for this team. Coupled with the strong leadership she provided on the field, she has the skills as a coach to help take us to the next level.” Mayer joins the coaching staff after starting in �7 matches on the defensive end in 2008, register-ing an assist in a 4-0 win against Anderson University on October 22. She started all �8 matches in

2006, tallying an assist in an ��-0 victory against Converse College on October 5. As a freshman in 2005, Mayer appeared in �8 matches with six starts, scoring a goal in a 2-0 win over Pfeiffer University on September � and recording assists against USC Aiken on September 28 and Lenoir-Rhyne University on November �. “I’m very excited to join the staff after my time here,” Mayer said. “I’m happy to be back and think my familiarity with the players and Coach Miller will translate into success on the field.”Mayer played four years of varsity soccer at Duchesne High School in St. Charles, Mo., near her hometown of St. Peters. While there she received All-Academic Team honors and helped her team to a district finals appearance. She also helped her club team win the state championship in 2005.

The Newberry women’s soccer team began the Karrie Miller era with a strong 2008 campaign, going 8-9-1 overall and finishing in a tie for fifth in South Atlantic Conference play with a 4-4 record, setting the stage for a chance at a conference crown in 2009. The season began with a tough 2-� loss in double overtime on the road to Palm Beach Atlantic University. A deadlocked second half pushed the team into an extra session, but PBA struck in the ��th minute to get the win. Newberry stayed in Florida but suffered an-other loss at Lynn University, 4-1. Newberry would look for its first win in its first game at home against Barry University but fell short, 2-0. The scarlet and gray then hit the road to take on North Alabama University. Senior in 2009 Lindsey Landgrebe (Springfield, Ill.) struck first for Newberry on a penalty kick in the 32nd minute and Lauren Car-bonell (Miami, Fla.) scored the goal in the 96th minute that earned the team its first win of the season. The team then fell to the University of West Georgia 4-1, but returning midfielder Lora Moore (Raleigh, N.C.) scored her first collegiate goal in the loss. Newberry returned home to kick off conference play against Mars Hill College and kicked off the SAC season with a bang on goals from Amberly Fowler (Taylors, S.C.), Lauren Carbonell and Meagan Heney (Ajax, Ontario) for a 3-0 win. Goalkeeper Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.) saved two shots for her first career shutout. Newberry dropped a �-0 SAC contest to Catawba College be-fore heading to North Carolina to take on Brevard College in another conference tilt. The team jumped out to an early lead in the third minute on a goal from Lora Moore and four more Newberry players would find the net for a 5-1 win. The victory, Newberry’s largest offen-sive output of the season, put the team at 3-5-0 overall and 2-�-0 in the SAC, putting them in first place. The scarlet and gray then traveled back to Newberry to take on Wingate University. Midfielder Allie Johns (Lexington, S.C.) would pro-vide all the offense the team would need, scoring a goal in each half and putting Wingate away 2-�, increasing Newberry’s lead in the SAC. The team continued its winning ways on the road against Clay-ton State University, with returner Sara Griffith (Marietta, Ga.) scoring in the second half and Emily Rhoades recorded another shutout to earn the �-0 win. With a winning streak at three and a 5-5-0 overall record, the team returned home for the first match of a three-match homes-tand against Tusculum College. The match followed the pattern of the Clayton State game, with Lauren Carbonell scoring in the second half and Rhoades making a career-high �� saves to earn the shutout, giving Newberry a �-0 victory. The four-game win streak helped give Newberry its first appear-ance in the NSCAA region poll, ranking ninth in the Southeast region. The team took that ranking into a home date with Georgia College & State University and although the offense failed to get on the board, Rhoades shut out the opponent for the third straight game, battling to a 0-0 tie after two overtimes. After a 2-� overtime loss at home to Lincoln Memorial at home and a 3-� defeat to Lenoir-Rhyne University, Newberry squared off

against Anderson University for its final home match of the season. The team struck early, with Amberly Fowler scoring in the sixth minute. The scarlet and gray would pour on three more goals in the next 26 minutes and Rhoades put up yet another shutout, giving her four and running Newberry’s record to 7-6-� overall, 4-3-0 in SAC play.Newberry then made up a rescheduled game with Lander University, with Allie Johns scoring in the 78th minute and Najla Bubtana (Miami, Fla.) scoring in the 88th minute to give Newberry the 2-0 win. Rhoades earned her fifth shutout. Unfortunately, Newberry would not find the win column again, falling to Carson-Newman College, 1-0, in the season finale and Ca-tawba College, 1-0, in the first round of the SAC tournament. Newberry saw Amberly Fowler and Elizabeth Jones (Anchorage, Alaska) named to the All-SAC first team after the season. Lauren Car-bonell was named to the All-SAC second team. Allie Johns lead the team in goals with five, while Lora Moore led in assists with four. Emily Rhoades’s five shutouts ranked second-best in school history and she enters 2009 with the second-best career goals against average with �.�9. Newberry can look forward to a familiar group returning in 2009, with seven starters coming back to don the scarlet and gray. Scorers Amberly Fowler and Lora Moore will return up front and Emily Rhoades will take her customary place in net, giving Newberry a well-deserved sense of optimism for 2009.
