Brad Edwards was introduced as Athletic Director at Newberry College on May 18, 2009.

Prior to coming to Newberry, he served as vice president of IMI Resort Holdings, Inc., after five years

as associate athletic director at the Uni-versity of South Carolina. He served as USC’s senior associate athletic director from July 2003 to March 2006.

Edwards, who played free safety for the Gamecocks and played in the Na-tional Football League for nine seasons, is currently responsible for the recruit-ing, hiring and training of sales execu-

tives and sales directors for IMI’s resort properties across North America, Latin America and the Caribbean. He also as-sists with the IMI PGA Tour Player pro-gram and was responsible for the con-struction of IMI’s New York City office.

In his time at South Carolina, he served as the athletic department’s chief financial officer and was respon-sible for the day-to-day oversight and management of all business functions. He oversaw the department’s budget, business operations for Williams Brice Stadium, the Colonial Center and Sarge Frye Field, new facility design, develop-ment, and construction, all venue con-cessions and food service, department advertising and multimedia rights, coor-dination of bowl travel, and many other

operational aspects of the department. He also assisted in securing major finan-cial gifts and executive suite licenses.

He joined the South Carolina athletic department as assistant athletic direc-tor for development in July 1999 and was named associate athletic director in October 2001. He transitioned to se-nior associate athletic director in July 2003.

Edwards played free safety in the NFL for nine seasons after being drafted in the second round of the 1988 draft by the Minnesota Vikings. He also played with the Washington Redskins and At-lanta Falcons and was a starter with the Redskins’ Super Bowl XXVI champion-ship team.

Newberry College announced on June 11, 2010, that Dr. V. Scott Koerwer, a senior business school administra-tor, entrepreneur and authority on leadership and strategy, will be-

come the College’s 21st president, effec-tive July 1. He follows Dr. Mitchell Zais, who has served as Newberry’s president since 2000. [Dr. John H. Hudgens II has been serving as acting president since February, while President Zais has been on a planned leave of absence.] The move begins a new era for the Col-lege, which has a long tradition of provid-ing educational opportunities for diverse populations of students from around the state and the nation. Newberry is known for the close, personal attention it offers to each of its more than 1,000 under-graduate students. In Dr. Koerwer, the board has selected an entrepreneurial leader who has closely studied the inter-connections of professional, business and liberal arts education and has de-

veloped innovative academic programs and strategic alliances across university campuses and with universities around the world. Currently Deputy Dean and Clinical Professor of Management at the Univer-sity of South Carolina’s Moore School of Business, Dr. Koerwer brings a broad range of educational perspectives to the Newberry presidency. He was educat-ed at a leading liberal arts institution, Muhlenberg College and went on to re-ceive his Master’s Degree from a lead-ing science and engineering university, Lehigh University. He was awarded his doctorate in education from the interna-tionally recognized University of Penn-sylvania. Dr. Koerwer is also an alumnus of the Advanced Executive Program at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. In addition to the Moore School, he has served as an executive at two leading schools of man-agement: the Wharton School of the Uni-versity of Pennsylvania and the Robert Smith School of Business at the Univer-sity of Maryland. In accepting the Board’s selection, Dr. Koerwer commented on his appoint-

ment. During the course of his 20-year career in business and higher educa-tion, Dr. Koerwer has established a no-table track record of collaboration and accomplishment at each institution he has served. Most recently at the University of South Carolina’s Moore School of Busi-ness, he managed a budget in excess of $50M, and led numerous redesign and development initiatives including the school’s first inclusive, comprehensive strategic planning process. Continuing his record of establishing international partnerships, he forged an alliance with the University of Tikrit in Iraq, laying his-toric groundwork for building a new edu-cation system for the nation as it works to establish a new education and social infrastructure. Dr. Koerwer co-launched three com-panies including a software company focused on knowledge management and back office operations for higher education clients and a boutique con-sulting and training firm. As a husband and father, he enjoys spending time with his family --including wife, Christine, and two daughters, Rachel and Julia.

Men’s Soccer

The Newberry College men’s soccer team will take to the field in 2010 looking to rejuvenate the school’s soccer program after a 3-14-2 (2-6 in South Atlantic

Conference play) 2009 season under sixth year head coach Sam Okpodu.

The Wolves will bring back All-Conference Freshman of the Year and second team All-SAC selection Adrian Ochoa. The sophomore led the scarlet and gray with six goals as a freshman. “The thing most people don’t think about with Ochoa is he is only a sophomore,” said Okpodu of his stand out for-ward. “But he did such great job for us last year and we’ll be expecting him to do big things for us again.” Also returning to the squad for the 2010 campaign are midfielder Nathan Arroyo, who sat out most of last year due to injury, and goalie Joel Johnson who has quickly risen to the top as the Wolves keeper. “I expect a lot from them (upper classmen) as far as help-ing out the younger guys,” said Okpodu of his veteran lead-ership. “Those guys really carried us last year and I expect them to do the same again this year.” Okpodu brings in a recruiting class of 25 freshman, all of which were high school standouts during their respective careers, in 2010 in hopes of regaining success at Newber-ry. The key to the season, according to Okpodu, will be

hinged on how quickly the younger and older players can mesh together as a team. And with over half of the squad consisting of freshman, it’s a likely scenario that most of this year’s starting line up will be made up of first year play-ers. “We’re going to be young,” said Okpodu. “But with the level of kids we’ve recruited, I expect to be playing among the top teams in our conference. The key is going to be how quickly we can blend the returners and the newcomers. The sooner we get them playing together the sooner I believe we can be successful.” The year kicks of on Sept. 3 with a home non-conference match up against Queens College. The Royals won last year’s meeting with a 1-0 score in Charlotte, N.C. Of the team’s 16 scheduled regular season games, just six will take place at home with the other 10 being played away from Newberry. Of the six team’s that finished ahead of the Wolves in last year’s standings, Newberry will only take on two at home this year. The scarlet and grey will face both the defending champs, Carson-Newman on Oct. 30, and the runner-up, Wingate on Oct. 6, on the road. “I’m really excited and looking forward to what this team will bring to the program,” added Okpodu. “And after speak-ing with all the guys new and old I can tell they’re excited and looking forward to the season starting too.”

In 2009 the men’s soccer team finished with a 3-14-2 overall re-cord and a 2-6 record in South Atlantic Conference play. The sea-

son ended on a shootout loss to Lenoir-Rhyne in the first round of the conference tournament.

Spencer Lewis enters his first year at Newberry with five years of previous coaching experience after spending the 2005-09 seasons as a men’s assistant varsity soccer coach at the Hammond School in Columbia, S.C., and has eight years of experience at numerous off sea-son soccer camps.

“I’m looking to get more serious about my coaching career and I feel the amount of responsibility that has already been given to me here at Newberry is pointing me in

the right direction,” said Lewis. “I’m really thankful to Brad Edwards for giving me the opportunity to kick off my college coaching career here.”

On the field, Lewis spent the 2005-09 seasons with the Univer-sity of South Carolina where he started in 27 matches for the Game-cocks and played in 49. He then spent the summer of 2010 with the Southern California Seahorses of the United Soccer Leagues Premier Development League. During his high school career Lewis helped lead Irmo High School to a 2004 state championship and was involved in the S.C. Olympic Development Program.

“What I like about Spencer is that he is coming to us from a very high caliber of soccer,” said Okpodu of his new assistant. “What I like even more is that he is still very involved in playing the game. I think that will help our players grow since they can gain knowledge from someone who’s still playing the game first hand.”

Lewis comes to Newberry after earning a bachelor’s degree from South Carolina in 2009.

Head Coach Sam Okpodu enters his seventh year at the reigns of the Newberry College men’s soccer program after six successful years as the Wolves’ head coach.

After hitting a high note in 2008, a year in which Okpodu led his team to a 5-2-1 (5-11-1 over-all) record and a third place finish in the South Atlantic Conference,

the highest in school history, The 2009 season ended with a 3-14-2 overall finish, putting the Wolves in seventh place at the end of the year.

During the 2009 campaign Okpodu led freshman Adrian Ochoa to receive the school’s third ever SAC freshman of the year award. Ochoa also went on to be named to the second team All-SAC squad.

Coach Okpodu led Newberry to a 9-10 record overall in 2006 and a 2-5 record in the South Atlantic Conference, finish-ing sixth. Three total players were placed on the all-SAC first and second teams.

In 2005, Newberry went 7-9-2 overall and 1-6 in SAC play. Okpodu led Newberry to a 9-7-2 overall record and a 3-3-1 South Atlantic Conference record in 2004, both tops in school history. The men also finished fifth in the SAC, what was then their highest conference finish ever.

The success found in 2004 included two all-conference selections and one all-region selection. Newberry finished the season ranked eighth in the National Soccer Coaches Associa-tion of America (NSCAA) Appalachian Region rankings, also a first for the program.

In addition to compiling the best overall and conference records in program history, the men also racked up an eight

match unbeaAten streak in 2004, another school best.Prior to his work with Newberry, Okpodu boasts 18 years

of coaching experience on the amateur, collegiate, semiprofes-sional, and international levels. He coached the Virginia Tech women’s Division I program for 10 seasons and he has served as a consultant for the Delta United Soccer Club, a professional men’s team in Nigeria. While overseas, he also guided the Nige-rian women’s national team to its third African Women’s Soccer Championship in 2002.

A graduate of North Carolina State University, Okpodu was a three-time All-American and still is the all-time Atlantic Coast Conference leading scorer with 193 points. He started all 77 games of his career, and participated in postseason play three of his four years.

After his professional career with the Orlando Lions (United States Soccer Federation) and a stint at the helm of the Ra-leigh United Soccer Club, Okpodu returned to the Wolfpack as an assistant coach before taking the reins of the Virginia Tech program. His Hokie squads graduated 95% of its players.

In 2002, Okpodu was recognized as one of 55 people to be selected to the ACC 50th Anniversary Team for his accom-plishments as a player at N.C. State. The team was voted on by seven league institutions that sponsor men’s soccer as decided by the league’s 50th Anniversary Committee.

Okpodu, a Nigerian-born U.S. citizen, holds licenses and di-plomas with the SSF and the NSCAA. He fills the role of advi-sor and consultant for the International Soccer Network, Inc., based in Blacksburg, Va.

2009 Newberry Men’s Soccer

The Newberry men’s soccer team struggled to find the success that the 2008 year brought in 2009, finishing with a 3-14-2 overall record (2-6-0 in conference) and placing seventh overall in the South Atlan-tic Conference. The scarlet and grey did manage to make the SAC post season tournament but fell 3-1 to eventual runner-up Wingate.

The men kicked of the 2009 campaign with a 3-2 double over time heartbreaker loss to the Anderson Trojans at home. Marvin Torvic scored one of his four goals of the 2009 season during the loss while senior Ben Mottel scored the other.

Game two brought Newberry it’s first of three victories on the year, traveling to Erskine and defeating the Flying Fleet 2-0. Adrian Ochoa, the eventual SAC freshman of the year and All-SAC second team se-lection, scored his first goal in a Newberry uniform during the win. Ochoa went on to lead the team in goals scored with six with a shot percentage of .231.

Newberry then dropped its next three games, 2-0 to Limestone, 1-0 to Queens (N.C.) and 3-2 in another overtime thriller to Clayton State.

The scarlet and grey then returned home after their four game road trip and played Montevallo to a 2-2 double over time draw with Ochoa and Torvic both scoring goals.

Newberry failed to capitalize on their homecoming success, drop-ping a 4-0 game to Lander before hitting the road once again. Kicking off conference play at Lincoln Memorial Newberry lost the opening match up 1-0.

It was another SAC road game and another Newberry loss as Mars Hill walked away with a 4-2 win before returning home for a non con-ference contest against USC Aiken. The home field advantage came into effect once again as Newberry played the Pacers to a 0-0 tie in yet another double overtime game.

It was rough sailing for Newberry after the draw, however, as the men dropped their next three matches, including losses to two SAC

foes in Tusculum (3-0) and Wingate (3-1).Newberry picked up its second win of the year and their first on the

road in game 14 of the season with a 4-2 win over Catawba. The scarlet and grey ended the year with a four game home stand

that resulted in losses to Lenoir-Rhyne (2-0) and Pfeiffer (4-1) before picking up their third and final win of the year with a commanding 4-1 win over Brevard. Newberry wrapped up the regular season playing conference champ Carson-Newman to a 2-1 overtime loss.
