Nicole Bird is entering her fi fth season as the head coach of the Boise State women’s golf team.

The team has shown marked improvement since her arrival prior to the 2007-08 season, winning their fi rst tournament title in nearly nine years. The victory in the 2008 Bronco Fall Invitational was the fi rst for Boise State since the 1999-2000 campaign.

Boise State’s fourth-place effort at the 2011 Western Athletic Conference Championships is tied for the third-best team fi nish at a conference tournament in school history, and Bird’s Broncos will try to improve on that as the team heads into the Mountain West for 2011-12.

On the course, Iris Ocariza earned the Broncos’ fi rst all-conference accolade in three seasons, garnering second-team honors in 2009. Her scoring average of 76.7 that season was the third-lowest in school history, and her six top-25 fi nishes in 2008-09 are tied for the sixth-most in school history.

Hayley Young earned second-team All-WAC accolades following the 2010-11 season, posting six top-25 fi nishes – tied for the sixth-most in school history – and recording four top-10 efforts, tied for the second-most by a Bronco all-time. Her scoring average of 75.8 is the lowest in school history.

In the classroom, the Broncos have combined for eight Academic All-WAC selections and

three NGCA All-American Scholars.

Bird joined Boise State after spending fi ve seasons as an assistant coach at TCU. Her duties as assistant coach included aiding in recruiting, organizing day-to-day operations of the program and helping lead team practices and workouts.

The Horned Frogs posted fi ve-straight NCAA Championships appearances and registered fi ve regular-season tournament victories during Bird’s tenure. The 2007 team won the MW Championship, and the program produced three All-America honorees in Catherine Matranga, Valentine Derrey and Brooke Tull. She also helped coach nine NGCA All-America Scholars, one Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-American and nine all-conference honorees.

Bird served as the assistant tournament director for the 2004 Conference-USA Women’s Golf Championships, as an intern with the American Junior Golf Association and as the AJGA’s Manager of Tournament Administration.

A native of Edmond, Okla., Bird attended Western New Mexico University from 1996-98 before transferring to Centenary (1998-2000), where she graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in communication and professional writing.

She and husband Steve were married during the summer of 2011.

Professionally, Bartels is a 12-year member of the Rocky Mountain Section of the PGA. He has been one of the leading golf instructors in the Treasure Valley for the last 11 years, based out of Eagle Hills in Eagle.
