Annie Pfeiffer Chapel, completed in 1941, was the first of Wright's designs at Florida Southern College.

Florida Southern is home to the world’s only Frank Lloyd Wright-designed planetarium.

Florida Southern College Frank Lloyd Wright's "Child of the Sun"

Founded by the United Methodist Church, Florida Southern College is one of the oldest private colleges in the state, tracing its beginnings to a small seminary in Orlando in 1885. The tie to its founding church has remained constant and is today, a proud part of the College's heritage and a bright beacon for the future. Florida Southern moved to Lakeland in the heart of Florida's citrus belt in 1922 and began the construction of a campus that would eventually become a national landmark. The beautiful 100-acre campus, on the north shore of Lake Hollingsworth, includes the world's largest collection of buildings by master architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Florida Southern’s West Campus, now known throughout the world, actually had its inception in the mind of Dr. Ludd M. Spivey, president of the college from 1925-1957.

In 1935 he conceived the idea of an ultra-modern campus, designed by the world's leading architect. Ground was broken two years later for the first building in the Wright collection, the Annie Pfeiffer Chapel. What Frank Lloyd Wright created on the campus is amazing. His original work is still as modern and exciting as the newest buildings still on many architect's drawing boards. It is, perhaps, symbolic that the greatest concentration of his genius should be located at a small, private institution of higher learning. Perhaps he describes it best, "...out of the ground and into the light, a child of the sun...the college of tomorrow."

The Thad Buckner Building is home to the FrankLloyd Wright “Child of the Sun” Visitor Center.

The Danforth Chapel is one of two chapels on campus designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

The Nina B. Hollis Wellness Center houses a full-sized basketball court, weight and aerobic rooms, and a student lounge and is adjacent to an NCAA regulation size swimming pool.

Frank Lloyd Wright often visitedFlorida Southern during his 20-year relationship with the college.

A grouping of three residence halls, thePublix Commons are close to just abouteverything on the Florida Southerncampus. All three buildings offer suite-style living in which six students each havetheir own rooms and share a living areaand bathroom. The Publix Commons alsois home to Florida Southern’s Greekorganizations.

Florida Southern’s recently renovated Water Dome, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, made its premiere performance on October25, 2007. The Water Dome features 74 jets powering streams ofwater 45-feet into the air. It took almost 260,000 gallons of waterto fill the basin of the dome and at full power 4,800 gallons arewater are pumped per minute.

All of Florida Southern College’sresidence halls offer wireless accessin the common lobby areas and everyroom offers cable TV and is wired forinternet access. In addition, wirelesshotspots on campus include the RouxLibrary, TûTû’s Cyber Cafe (whichoffers Starbucks products), Wynee’sBistro (our cafeteria), and the Nina B.Hollis Wellness Center and pool area.

As one of the four originalbuildings on the FSC campus,Joseph-Reynolds Hall (“JR”)offers one of the best views oncampus. It sits atop a hilloverlooking Lake Hollingsworth.Community life is big here - thewomen of JR form groups withinthe building as a whole and alsowithin the “wings” and smallerhallways. JR and its companionhall, Spivey, are located in thecenter of campus between EdgeHall and Ordway and serve mainlyas first-year female residencehalls.

Wesley Hall is the first of two new twin residence halls at FSCand opened in the fall of 2008. The second building, Nicholas Hall, is expected to be ready for occupancy in the fall of 2009.Each new residence hall includes 115 bedrooms with views of Lake Hollingsworth, meeting rooms, student lounges, kitchens, and study spaces.

Anne B. Kerr, Ph.D. College President Since her unanimous appointment as its 17th president in 2004, Dr. Kerr has provided Florida Southern College with extraordinary vision and leadership that is enhancing the student experience and increasing the College’s national prominence. Under her guidance, the institution

has renewed its commitment to educating the whole person - academically, socially, spiritually, and physically - so that students leave prepared to make a positive and consequential impact on our world. Early in her tenure, Dr. Kerr led a comprehensive Strategic Plan designed to enrich all facets of the College’s student-centered culture. She is dedicated to enhancing a student life culture that provides opportunities for active learning and leadership; promoting a scholarly environment where professors have outstanding records of achievement that support innovative, engaged, and personalized instruction; and to strengthening further the College’s outstanding scholar-athlete program that models the highest standards of NCAA Division II athletics.

As part of her quest for excellence, Dr. Kerr commissioned a master plan that outlines the College’s vision for the campus and includes numerous facility transformations. These include a soon-to-be completed residential life facility designed by world-renowned architect Robert Stern; a state-of-the-art center for the study of languages and literatures; an Internet café in the library and an addition to the library; the expansion of wireless Internet access and campus-wide technology upgrades; renovations to the student dining facility and residence halls; as well as a restoration of our world renowned Frank Lloyd Wright campus. Prior to assuming the presidency at Florida Southern, Dr. Kerr was Vice President for Advancement at both Rollins College and the University of Richmond. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Mercer University and her master’s and doctoral degrees from the Florida State University. She has held a number of community volunteer leadership roles and currently serves on the boards of SunTrust Bank Central Florida, The Lakeland Chamber of Commerce, Habitat for Humanity, The Polk Museum of Art and the Polk Arts Alliance. She and her husband, Dr. Roy Kerr, have a thirteen-year-old son, Eddie. Roy Kerr is the author of a recently-published book about baseball entitled “The Loving of the Game.”

Pete Meyer Athletic Director

Pete Meyer is in his first year as the Director of Athletics at Florida Southern College. Named to the position Feb. 21, 2008, he officially assumed his duties July 1, when Lois Webb retired. Since 1972, he is just the fourth person to occupy the position of athletics director at Florida Southern – following Hal Smeltzly (1972-2000), Mike Roberts (2000-01) and Webb (2001-08). ”Pete Meyer is the best person to carry forward the legendary success of Florida Southern’s athletic programs,” FSC President Dr. Anne Kerr said at the time of his appointment. “His strength of character, commitment to a model scholar-athlete program, administrative skill, knowledge of intercollegiate athletics, dedication to students and ability to work with the senior staff of the College to achieve the goals of our strategic plan position him as the best person for this key institutional position. He has an impressive record of accomplishments as both a coach and athletic administrator, and has demonstrated a deep commitment to Florida Southern. I am confident that he will be an outstanding leader for our program.” “I am extremely honored to become director of athletics at Florida Southern College,” Meyer said. “I want to thank Dr. Kerr, Lois Webb and the Board of Trustees for their support and for their trust in my leadership ability in this position. Lois was a wonderful source of guidance and leadership for me. I look forward to working with Dr. Kerr in bringing her vision to Florida Southern, while maintaining our championship athletics program.” Meyer, who has been at Florida Southern since 1998, had served as assistant athletics director for Webb since February of 2006, in addition to maintaining his baseball coaching duties. In his position as assistant athletics director, he was

responsible for acquiring major gifts for the athletic department that included funding and equipment for the athletics weight room and upgrading the baseball and men’s basketball locker rooms. He coordinated all of the athletic department’s fundraising efforts, coordinated athletic facilities and served as game administrator for various home events. He also served as Florida Southern’s representative on the Sunshine State Conference Marketing Committee. As baseball coach, Meyer spent six full seasons as head coach, keeping the Moccasin program among the elite in NCAA Division II. In 2005, he guided the Moccasins to their ninth NCAA Division II national title with a 51-11 record and was the American Baseball Coaches Association Division II Coach-of-the-Year. In addition to his national coaching honors from the ABCA, Meyer also was South Region, Sunshine State Conference and Florida Diamond Club (scouting organization) Coach-of-the-Year. His head coaching record at FSC was 257-111-1, while his overall record as a head coach was 296-141-1. Thirty-four Moccasin baseball players were drafted or signed professional contracts during Meyer’s tenure at Florida Southern. Before officially assuming the reigns of head coach, Meyer had served for over three years as Florida Southern's top assistant coach. He also was the program's recruiting coordinator. Prior to joining the FSC coaching staff, Meyer spent five seasons at Valdosta State, working under the legendary head coach, Tommy Thomas. Before his stint at Valdosta State, Meyer was head baseball coach at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, where he coordinated the start of the school’s Division III baseball program in 1991. He served as a graduate assistant at Valdosta State from 1988-90, while earning his M. Ed. in physical education. Meyer was a four-year baseball letterman at the College of Wooster in Ohio, graduating in 1987 with a B.A. in speech communication. Meyer is married to the former Julie Newnum. The couple has three children, 20-year-old Ross, 18-year old Mitchell and 17-year-old Megan.

2008-09 Florida Southern Women’s Golf Preview Florida Southern begins the 2008-09 season ranked #3 in the nation. Considering where they normally finish, that ranking might qualify the Moccasins for underdog status. However, it does nothing to alter the expectations, and in truth the thought of Florida Southern as anything but a postseason favorite is almost absurd. That’s even more obvious this year, as the NCAA has expanded its field at the national finals, and three teams from the powerful South Region will now advance to that level instead of two. Thus, no one will overlook Florida Southern when it takes the course this year. The Moccasins have a group of well-established golfers featuring two All-Americans, plus another player who beat both of them in three tournaments last spring. We’ll refer to them as three All-American caliber golfers, but even that might be misleading. There are several players on Florida Southern’s roster in any given year that would fall into that category, and the Mocs hope that trend continues this year. With the graduation of four-year starters Lindsey Bergeon and Jackie Barenborg, two spots in the regular lineup are wide open. Those are big shoes to fill, but the Mocs have plenty of qualified candidates. That lineup starts with senior Heather Burgner, the Mocs’ team MVP each of the last two years. That alone speaks volumes with the type of roster Florida Southern typically has put together. Burgner was named a First Team All-American in both of those seasons, owned a stroke average of 75.3 during that same span and only twice finished outside of the top 10. She continues to excel in the postseason where she finished second at both the regional and national tournaments last year. Burgner already owns the school record for lowest stroke average in a season, and that average has dropped each year she’s played at Florida Southern. Though Burgner is the only returning Moccasin who was an All-American last year, she was joined on the First Team by Kim Ulander in 2007. The two shared the team lead for

lowest stroke average that year, but it’s Ulander who holds the lead when in career scoring average (75.93). That figure ranks second in school history. The junior also has eight top-five finishes in her career and has been a dominant golfer since joining the Moccasins when she won the first college tournament she ever played. There are a few similarities between Ulander and sophomore Marianne Andersson. Both are from Sweden and both made a huge impact as freshmen. Though she didn’t become part of the regular lineup until the Mocs’ fourth tournament, Andersson’s play the second half of the season was amazing. She opened the spring with a second-place finish at the Tusculum Intercollegiate, followed that with a win at the Lady Moc Classic, and proved it was no fluke when she finished as the runner-up in a playoff at the Nova Southeastern Classic a month later. That was enough to land her a spot on the all-conference team, and only Burgner had a better stroke average during the spring portion of the season. Junior Connie Reed and sophomore Emily Flanigan both saw time in the starting five last year, and

both have some form of post-season experience. Reed especially is battle-tested, having played in the 2007 national finals when Florida Southern won its most recent national championship. She gave the Mocs a huge lift in the NCAA playoffs that year and they’re looking for her to play at that level again this year. While Reed did improve her scoring average, she still lost time to Flanigan, who had her moments to shine too last year. Both players averaged around 79. Flanigan was a team counter in every round she played during the fall and later turned in an 11th-place finish as an individual in the Nova Southeastern Spring Classic. She also played in the Sunshine State Conference Tournament where she helped the Mocs place second on their way to the NCAA Regional Tournament. The Moccasins have two seniors battling for more playing time too. Katie Jared and Stefanie Shaw each played in three tournaments during the ’07-’08 season and helped the Florida Southern “B” team finish in the upper half of the standings when they were part of the field. Jared has played in eight tournaments overall, with Shaw playing in five.

Junior Kim Ulander is one of seven returning players for Florida Southern andhas played in 21 tournaments the last two years. She had four top-five finishes last year and was a First Team All-American in 2007.

The Moccasins are hoping their two new freshmen perform as well as last year’s two rookies did. Both Andersson and Flanigan came to Florida Southern with impressive credentials, and the same can be said of this year’s newcomers, M.J. Audette and Silvie Dittertova. Audette finished either first or second in the district tournament three straight years at Lakeland’s George Jenkins High School, but she really stepped things up after that. She had a busy spring and summer before her arrival at Florida Southern, playing in the Callaway Golf PGA Junior Series. In her five junior tournaments, she placed in the top five in all of them, including a win at Penn State’s Blue Course. That helped earn Audette the Girls’ Player-of-the-Year award she received while playing in the Junior PGA Championships in Kentucky. Dittertova hails from the Czech Republic but she spent one year as an exchange student at Lakeland’s Kathleen High School. She competed for the Red Devils, but also won two of the three events she played with the Greater Tampa Junior Golf Association. Back home, Dittertova is a member of her country’s national team and took part in the 2007 International European Ladies Amateur Championship. Of course, she isn’t the first Moccasin golfer to come from the Czech Republic; the other was two-time NCAA Division II national champion Jana Peterkova, now a member of the school’s athletic hall of fame. The Lady Moccasins will once again compete against the best Division II teams in the country, and several Division I teams, in preparation for another run at a national championship. That’s the ultimate goal every year for a program that’s won four of them, finished as runner-up on four other occasions and is always in the running for the top prize in the country.

Head Coach Robbie Davis

Few coaches in the history of Florida Southern College have enjoyed as much success as Robbie Davis, who began his tenure in the spring of 1997. Now in his 13th year in charge of the women’s golf program, Davis has guided the Lady Moccasins to four national championships, four national runner-up finishes and nine trips to the NCAA Division II National finals. The Mocs have

now qualified for either the regional or national tournament 11 straight years, the longest current streak in the country. During Davis’ tenure, the Lady Mocs have won national titles in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2007; they’ve also finished as national runners-up four times (1998, 1999, 2003 and 2004), and placed third in 2005. During those years, the Lady Mocs had seven straight first- or second-place finishes from 1998-2004, a feat surpassed by only one other women’s golf team at any collegiate level. They’ve qualified for the national tournament nine of the last 11 years, and finished third or better in all nine. Only one other NCAA school (Division III Methodist College) has done better in the last 11 years. Even in the three seasons Florida Southern didn’t make it to the national finals, Davis still had at least one player qualify as an individual. Three did so in 1997 (leaving the Lady Mocs one shy of making it as a team), Lindsey Bergeon qualified in 2006, and Heather Burgner made it last year. Both Bergeon and Burgner finished as the individual runner-up, as did Shanna Nagy in 1997. Under Davis, the Moccasins have dominated the national poll never being ranked below #3 in the last 11 years. Even more recognition has come from Golf Digest as that publication has Florida Southern as one of only two Division II schools in the country ranked among its top 60 women’s golf programs, and one of only three in the top 100. That puts FSC in the top five percent overall. Last year’s team was ranked #1 in the country for most of the season and finished in the top three in all but one tournament they played. Although Florida Southern came up short in a bid for a second straight national title, it was more an indication of the strength of teams in the South Region, and more specifically in the Sunshine State Conference. The SSC boasted five of the nation’s top six ranked teams, and the Mocs went 16-9 against those schools in head-to-head meetings throughout the season. In fact, no team outside the SSC has finished ahead of Florida Southern in the last three years. Two years ago, Davis took Florida Southern to its fourth national championship, and it may have been the best team Davis has coached. Considering it was preceded by three other national championships, there’s at least room for debate. Nevertheless, the 2006-07 team finished first or tied

for first in eight of the 11 tournaments in which they played; they swept through the postseason and finished behind only three other Division II schools all season; and by the end of the year, four Lady Moccasins were named to the NGCA All-American team. Altogether, Davis has had 30 All-Americans, with Lindsey Bergeon, Heather Burgner, Kim Ulander and Jackie Barenborg all earning that status in 2007, and Burgner and Bergeon making it again last year. Of those 30, 20 have been First Team All-Americans, eight were Second Team and two were honorable mention. Five of them were named the NCAA Division II National Player-of-the-Year, most recently Pamela Feggans in 2005. Florida Southern has had five individual national champions under Davis (Shanna Nagy in 1998; Jana Peterkova in 2001 and 2002; and Lisa Cave in 1999 and 2000), and a Lady Moccasin has finished first or second at the national tournament in 10 of his 12 previous seasons as head coach. A total of 21 have finished in the top five. The individual honors don’t stop there. Rachel Bell was the 2001 National Freshman-of-the-Year in addition to the overall Player-of-the-Year, and was the Sunshine State Conference Female Athlete-of-the-Year as well. She’s one of four Lady Moccasins named the SSC Golfer-of-the-Year under Davis. Davis has been named GolfWeek Magazine National Coach-of-the-Year three times (2000, 2001, and 2002), as well as the NGCA National Coach-of-the-Year twice (2002 and 2007). He’s twice been the NGCA South Region Coach-of-the-Year (2002 and 2007), and his list of coaching honors also includes five SSC Coach-of-the-Year awards. He captured all three awards in 2007. The same year Davis won the coaching trifecta, he was also inducted into the Florida Southern Athletic Hall of Fame. He joined two of his former players, Shanna Nagy and Lisa Cave, and a third women’s golfer was inducted last year when Jana Peterkova became a member. Since Davis became head coach in 1997, Florida Southern has won 35 tournament titles, including 28 in the last eight years. Among those are four national, two regional, and three conference tournaments. A Lakeland native, Davis is a 1988 graduate of Lakeland High School. He played collegiately at the University of Kentucky where he received his B.A. in Finance in 1993. While at Kentucky, Davis was a two-time Academic All-American as a junior and senior, and a three-time member of the SEC All-Academic Team. He twice won the Kentucky Intercollegiate Golf Championship. Before coming to Florida Southern, Davis served as assistant golf coach at the University of Kentucky for one year before playing three years professionally on the Tommy Armour, Gary Player, Moonlight and Hooters Tours. He’s also served as a golf assistant at Lone Palm Golf Club, the home course of the Moccasins. Robbie and his wife Joy live in Lakeland and have three daughters: Perry (8), Lucy (5) and Susie (3).

Assistant Coach Norm Benn

Norm Benn is in his 13th year as assistant women’s golf coach at Florida Southern, but has been a part of the Moccasin athletic program for a total of 25 years overall. As a member of both the Florida Southern Athletic Hall of Fame and the Sunshine State Conference Hall of Fame, Benn has helped coach teams to conference titles, regional championships and national tournament appearances

in both women’s basketball and women’s golf. He’s the only coach in the school’s history to accomplish all three of those feats with two different teams. Benn first came to Florida Southern in 1984 as assistant women’s basketball coach and was elevated to head coach the following season. He guided the Moccasins to a 23-4 record that year (1985-86), at the time the best in team history. They compiled an 8-0 mark in the Sunshine State Conference, and won both the SSC regular season and tournament championships. He was named the SSC Coach-of-the-Year for his efforts, the first of four times he won that honor from the conference. The following year Benn coached the program’s first All-American in Kim Disbro, who at the time of her graduation was the team’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder. Disbro went on to become the first women’s basketball player in the Florida Southern Hall of Fame, but was later joined by two other players coached by Benn. One of those was three-time All-American Tarra Blackwell in 2004, and the other was All-American Kelly Charron in 2008. Blackwell was also inducted into the Sunshine State Conference Hall of Fame in 2004.

In his 12 seasons as head coach of the Florida Southern women’s basketball team, Benn won 20 or more games eight times. That was highlighted by the 1994-95 team which advanced to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight and went 28-4 to set a school record for wins that still stands today. Benn retired from basketball at the end of the 1996-97 season ranked among the top 20 active Division II coaches in career wins. His career record of 251-96 (a .725 winning percentage) makes him the winningest basketball coach in Florida Southern history for either the women or men’s programs. His teams won five Sunshine State Conference regular season titles, six SSC Tournament titles and one NCAA South Regional (1995), the first SSC women’s basketball team to ever win an NCAA regional tournament. He took the Lady Moccasins to the NCAA Tournament three times overall, was SSC Coach-of-the-Year four times and the South Region Coach-of-the-Year once. Benn was later inducted into the SSC Hall of Fame in 2003 (as only the second women’s basketball coach inducted), and the Florida Southern Hall of Fame in 2004. At the conclusion of his basketball career, Benn became the assistant women’s golf coach in the fall of 1997, joining a program started two years earlier. Since then, he’s been a part of all four national championships won by the Lady Mocs and all four national runner-up teams. A graduate of Drexel University in Philadelphia, Benn served as freshmen men’s basketball coach for six years at his alma mater, including two undefeated seasons. He was a three-year letterman in basketball and baseball at Drexel. In addition to his coaching duties at Florida Southern, Benn served as the NCAA Compliance Coordinator from 1992-2005, and was also the Assistant Athletic Director for Development and Special Projects. His wife, Kathy, is an instructor at Florida Southern College and the chair of the Physical Education Department.

Did You Know? Heather Burgner holds the season record for top-10 finishes, which she set with 10 as a sophomore, and equaled last year as a junior. The previous record of nine was set by Jana Peterkova in 2001-02, and matched by Pamela Feggans a year later. Burgner also has a chance to set the career record in that category, and has finished in the top-10 in nearly 75 percent of her appearances. By comparison, Peterkova did so in 82 percent of her tournaments (14-for-17), but played only two years for the Mocs.

WHY MOCCASINS? Florida Southern first used the nickname Moccasins in 1926, shortly after the college’s move to Lakeland in 1922. The water moccasin, or cottonmouth, was abundant in the nearby lakes and since the moccasin is one of the fiercest of all snakes, the college adopted the moniker for its athletic teams. A male water moccasin can grow up to 1.8 meters (74 inches) in length, and though its venom is considered relatively mild compared to other poisonous snakes, its bite is still extremely painful.

AN ACE IN THE HOLE! On May 4, 2004, Sarah Coleson made Florida Southern women’s golf history in Pace, Florida. The senior became the first, and so far only, Lady Moccasin to ace a hole when she needed just one shot on the par-three #5 in Stonebrook Country Club. It came in the first round of the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament, and eventually helped the Lady Mocs

to a second-place finish and a berth in the NCAA National Finals. Florida Southern earned that bid by finishing just one stroke ahead of third-place West Florida.

MOCCASIN MEN WIN SSC MAYOR’S CUP

Florida Southern finished first in the men’s division and third in the women's division for the Sunshine State Conference Mayor's Cup for all-sports competition last year. The award is sponsored by the mayors of the nine communities in which SSC schools are located. The Mayor's Cup recognizes competition in six sports for men: soccer, cross country, basketball, golf, tennis and baseball and nine sports for women: volleyball, softball and rowing, in addition to the men’s sports. Points in each sport are awarded by the number of schools sponsoring teams in the respective sports. The 2007-08 academic year marked the 22nd year of the Mayor's Cup competition. Florida Southern has won the women's division 10 times and the men’s division 10 times, more than any other school in both divisions.
