Athletic FacilitiesWillamette University Women’s Golf 2008-09

Illahe Hills Country Club has well-maintained fairways and beautiful surroundings. It is one oftwo primary courses used by Willamette University for practices and tournaments.

The ninth green at Creekside Country Clubfeatures water and multiple bunkers.

The Bearcat men’s and women’s golf teamsareabletopracticeattwoof thearea’stopgolfcourses:IllaheHillsCountryClubandCreeksideCountry Club. Both are located in Salem, Ore.IllaheHillsisamoretraditionalcoursewithlotsof maturetrees.CreeksidewasdesignedbyPeterJacobsenandfeaturesacontemporarystylewithmanyhazardsandbunkers.Eachcourseprovidesgolfers with different challenges, allowing theBearcatstoimproveanddiversifytheirskills. JohnLewisField is thehomeof WillametteBearcat baseball. The field is located at Roy S.“Spec” Keene Stadium at Bush’s Pasture Park.The stadium features chairback seating in partof thegrandstand.Overallcapacityis1,000. Willamette’sfootballteamplayshomegamesatMcCulloch Stadium, locatednear John LewisField. The football stadium is two blocks fromcampusandjustoneblockfromSalemHospital.The stadium seats 2,400, with lights for nightgames and an athletic training room, allowingathletestoreceiveon-sitetreatment.

McCulloch Stadium has a FieldTurf playingsurface, along with spacious locker rooms andmeeting rooms. It provides the atmosphere ofanoldstadium,butwithmodernconveniences. The Charles Bowles Track, located insideMcCulloch Stadium, is an all-weather facility

that showcases Willamette’s track and field and crosscountryteams,whichhostmeetseachyear. Theentire football, track, cross country andbaseball complex is atBush’sPasturePark.Theparkhostscrosscountrymeetsonitswidepathsandisknownforitsartexhibitsandrosegarden. ConeFieldHouseisthehomecourtfortheWillamette men’s basketball, women’s basketballandvolleyballteams.Thearenaholds2,500fans,

withplentyof seatingoneachsideof thecourt.There is a quality sound system, plus tables forscorekeepers,statisticiansandbroadcastmedia. Cone Field House is part of the Lestle J.Sparks Center, which houses offices for the Department of Athletics and the Departmentof ExerciseScience.Thebuildinghasbasketball,handball and racquetball courts, a weight liftingand fitness center, classrooms and locker rooms. Also connected to the Sparks Center is theWU natatorium, home of Bearcat swimming.The natatorium, with space for 200 fans, alsocanbeseenfromaviewingareainthelobby.

TheWillametteUniversitysoccer teamsplayhome games at Sparks Field, an artificial turffacility next to the Sparks Center. The field is equipped with lights for night games and seats500 spectators. The facility is one of the topcollege fields in the Northwest. Close to theSparksCenterandSparksFieldare six outdoor tennis courts. The men’s andwomen’s tennis teams host meets during thespringeachyear. WU’srowingteamshaveaboathouseonthewest side of the Willamette River. The Bearcatshost the Governor’s Cup Regatta each spring. Ontheeastsideof campusistheWillametteSoftball Complex. It includes covered dugouts,battingcages,ascoreboardandbleachers.

WU’s baseball team plays at John Lewis Field.

McCulloch Stadium and the Charles BowlesTrack are used by the football, track and fieldand cross country teams.

The Sparks Center includes offices for theDepartment of Athletics.

Creekside Country Club is nestled in a valleyand was designed by Peter Jacobsen.

Dr. M. Lee Pelton was appointed the 22nd president of WillametteUniversityinJuly,1999.UnderPelton’sleadership,theUniversityhasincreasedits academic profile, successfully employing strategies to attract the best faculty and the brightest students from the state, the nation and the world. Since2001,WillametteUniversityhasbeen ranked a top tier liberal arts collegebyU.S. News and World Report.PresidentPeltonholds adoctorate fromHarvardUniversity and an undergraduate degree in English and psychology fromWichita State University, where he graduated magna cum laude in 1974. Hisarea of academic focus is 19th century British prose and poetry. He served

asdeanof thecollegeatColgateUniversity (1988-91)andDartmouthCollege(1991-98).AtHarvard,hetaught in theEnglishDepartment andwas thedeanof oneof Harvard’s 13undergraduate colleges.HeteachesatWillametteinsubjectsrangingfrom1stcenturyAthenstopost-apartheidSouthAfrica.

Mark Majeski began his tenure with Willamette University in October of 2000, following five years as athletic director at the University of California, Santa Cruz and four years as assistant athletic director at Menlo College.He currently serves as the chairman of the NCAA Division III membershipcommittee,whichprovidesoversightof theDivision IIIprovisionalmemberprogram. Majeski previously served on the NCAA Division III men’s tennis committee,overseeingchampionshipsinthatsport.Aformerbasketball,trackand softball coach, Majeski also worked venue management and operationsfor the 1994 FIFA Men’s Soccer World Cup and the 1996 Atlanta Olympic

Games. At WU, Majeski oversees 20 varsity teams, with the Bearcats competing in NCAA Division III, the Northwest Conference and the Intercollegiate Rowing Association. He also is the basketball liaison between the NWC coaches and athletic directors. Majeski received an undergraduate degree in journalism from Menlo College and a master’s degree in higher education administration from San Jose StateUniversity.HelivesinSalemwithhiswife,Denise,andtheirson,JackHenry,age4.

Head Coach Tom Hibbard (7th year)Tom Hibbard is in his seventh season as head coach of the Willamette women’s golf team. Prior to becominghead coach, Hibbard was a professor of economics at WU for thirty years. He also served as Willamette’sregistrar twice during his career. Hibbard was coaching the Bearcats when Whitney Ueno finished 10th at the2006 NCAA Division III National Tournament. Ueno earned First Team All-NWC recognition all four yearsand helped WU win the team title at the NWC Fall Classic in 2006.

Hibbard was a high school golfer at Grant High School in Portland, Ore., where he participated in three StateChampionship Tournaments. He also played golf at Pomona College in California and participated in oneNCAA Tournament. He graduated from Pomona in 1959. Hibbard and his wife, Priscilla, live in Salem.

Willamette is a member ofNCAA Division III. The Bearcats compete in

the Northwest Conference,which includes teams inOregon and Washington.

Construction is now underway on FordHall, which will house Rhetoric and Media Studies, Computer Science, Math, DigitalArt, Film Studies and Music Technology.Funds for the 46,000-square-foot buildingincludean$8milliongiftfromHallieFord. Running through the WU campus is theMillStream.Itcreatesabeautifulsettingtowalk to classes, play games on the campus

quad or hang out with friends. Willametteisfortunatetohaveagreatcombinationofwonderful landscaping, beautiful trees andopen spaces. Students also interact with afriendlyandattentivefacultyandstaff. Willamette benefits from its location across the street from the Oregon State

Capitol and from being near other federal,state, county, and city offices. In particular,Willamette students are often chosen forinternships with government organizations.Students also participate in a wide varietyof volunteers service projects through theCommunityOutreachProgram. TheWillamettefootballteamisinvolvedwith the United Way Days of Caring eachyear. Other WU athletic teams also havebeenactiveinthesurroundingareathroughcommunityserviceevents. Salem, the state capital, is the second-largest city in Oregon, with a populationof about 147,000. Salem features a rangeof restaurants, theaters and other culturalopportunities ... many within easy walkingdistance. The Willamette River winds itsway through Salem’s historic downtowndistrict before flowing northward. The Pacific Coast is an hour to the west,theCascadeMountains are about the samedistance to the east andPortland is just 45minutestothenorth.Alsointheregionarethe Columbia River gorge and Mount Hood.

NWC Membership

Willamette is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and competes inDivision III, which has over425membersandisthelargestNCAA division. The colleges in Division III place a priorityon the overall quality of theeducational experience and on successfulcompletion of each student’s academicprograms. They seek an environment inwhich a student-athlete’s activities with anathleticteamareseenasanintegralpartof hisorhereducationalexperience.Membersin Division III must sponsor at least fivemen’s sports and five women’s sports.

Athletes in Division III donot receive financial aid related to athletic ability. Willametteand other NCAA Division III membersencouragestudents toparticipate by maximizing thevariety of athletic opportunities.Primary emphasis is placed on

conference and regional play. Willametteoften sends its teams to California, Idaho,WashingtonandTexasforin-regiongames. NCAA Division III members establishan environment with cultural diversity andgender equity among student-athletes andstaff. InDivisionIII, facultyandstaff careaboutthewell-beingof student-athletes.

NCAA Division III

Northwest Conference Thenineprivatecollegesand universities in Oregonand Washington that formthe Northwest Conference arebuildingareputationforthe NWC as one of the top NCAA Division III leaguesin the nation. The NWC isnationally competitive in abroadspectrumof sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 80 yearsold and is one of the oldest conferencesin the western United States. The NWC’s currentmembersinOregonareWillamette,George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington arePacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, WhitmanandWhitworth. Charter members included Willamette,the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was addedin1931,remainedforsevenyearsandthenreturnedin1949asLewis&ClarkCollege.

Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed byWhitworth in 1970. TheCollege of Idaho withdrewfromtheconferencein1978.Whitworth dropped out in1984 and returned in 1988.Menlo joined in 2006 as amemberinfootballonly.TheNWC offers championships

in18sports(ninemen’sandninewomen’s). The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, butjoinedforceswiththeWomen’sConferenceof Independent Colleges in 1984 to formthe Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges.Thenamewas shortenedback tothe original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC membersshifted affiliation from the NAIA to theNCAA. Members knew the move wouldfoster equity, sportsmanship and a genuineconcernforallstudent-athletes.
