ALABAMA MEDIA RELATIONSThe Alabama Athletic Media Relations Office is located on the ground level of Coleman Coliseum in room 170.

MEDIA SERVICESMembers of the media can obtain updated statistics as well as daily tournament results for the Crimson Tide women’s golf team during their season via e-mail and at Alabama’s official athletics website at www.rolltide.com. In addition, the Media Relations office will also provide the media with rosters and tee times for any event the Tide is scheduled to host. Credentials are usually not needed to cover an Alabama-hosted women’s golf event, but notification of your intent to cover is needed by the Media Relations Department.

INTERNETInformation about the University of Alabama’s athletics can be found on the world wide web on the Crimson Tide official athletics site: www.rolltide.com. For information about the Crimson Tide women’s golf program select that area from the main menu. Information on the web includes statistics, results, biographies and other historical information.

TELEVISIONThe University of Alabama, through the Crimson Tide Sports Network (CTSN), offers a weekly 15-minute satellite feed consisting of interviews with coaches and athletes, taped video highlights and narrated tape package from September through May. Occasionally the women’s golf team will be featured in this package. Please call the media relations office for more details. During the season, the golf team’s progress will be covered each week on “The Crimson Tide This Week,” a 30-minute regional sports show.

INTERVIEWSHead coach Mic Potter is available for interviews and can be reached through the Alabama sports information office, due to the extensive time the golf coaching staff spends outside on the course. Team practice sessions rotate times and locations daily depending on upcoming events and areas of practice emphasis. Because of this, we require you to make golf interview requests at least 24 hours in advance. We ask that golf interviews be arranged through Josh Maxson in the Media Rela-tions office at 205-348-7496.

FACILITIESAs part of the Crimson Tradition Fund facility upgrades, Alabama’s home golf course — Ol’ Colony — has some brand new additions that only serve to turn the course into the Tide’s real home. Con-struction took place in 2004 on the Jerry Pate Golf Center, UA’s private practice facility and club house that includes coaches’ offices, a fully furnished locker room and a team room. Ol’ Colony, a course designed by former UA men’s golf standout Jerry Pate, serves as the team’s home course. In addition to its “home” course, the Alabama women’s golf team benefits from the opportunity of being able to access several golf courses in the Tuscaloosa area for practice, including NorthRiver Yacht Club and Indian Hills Country Club.

Alabama’s success on the golf course has also car-ried over to the classroom. The Tide has had an impressive 11 golfers earn 20 Academic All-SEC honors over the past four seasons. During that time, four Alabama golfers have also garnered nine National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar honors. Four Tide golfers were selected as NGCA All-American Scholars in 2009 with Hel-ena Blomberg, Kathleen Ekey, Laura Goodwin and Brooke Pancake selected to the team. Goodwin was also named a 2008 CoSIDA/ESPN The Maga-zine Academic All-American. Goodwin made four appearances on the SEC Academic Honor Roll, was named to a NGCA All-American Scholar three times and has graduated with a perfect 4.0 grade point average and a degree in kinesiology. The Paul W. Bryant Academic Center gives golfers at Alabama all of the tools needed to excel in the classroom. The Bryant Center is a 55,000-square foot, state-of-the-art facility that includes a 48-seat computer lab with brand new equipment along with 25 lap-top computers that can be checked out for road trips. There are also math, English and writing labs as well as individual study rooms.

The Crimson Tide has also enjoyed its most exten-sive individual success with three different players earning five All-America honors over the past four seasons. Jenny Suh garnered All-America honors in 2006 and 2007 and Kathleen Ekey followed her with back-to-back All-America accolades in 2008 and 2009. Junior Camilla Lennarth was also recog-nized as an honorable mention All-American follow-ing the 2009 season. Potter has had 21 NGCA All-Americans during his illustrious coaching career.

The Alabama women’s golf team has reached heights of success over the past four-plus years never seen in the program’s history. Mic Potter has built the Crimson Tide into a national contender since his arrival prior to the 2005-06 season. Ala-bama has advanced to the NCAA Championships in each of Potter’s four seasons after the Tide had qualified for the NCAA Championships’ field just once in the program’s history before his arrival. Alabama’s NCAA finishes have improved every year to a point where the Tide is considered one of the nation’s elite. The Crimson Tide is now a top-10 mainstay in the rankings and a top destination for the nation’s best.

One thing that is still missing from the Crimson Tide trophy case after the success of the past four years is an SEC Championship. The 2010 SEC Champion-ships might be the perfect opportunity for Alabama with the Southeastern Conference descending on Tuscaloosa for the first time. The Tide will host the 2010 event at the NorthRiver Yacht Club on April 16-18. It is just the second time for Alabama to host its fellow SEC institutions, after finishing third in 1998 when the Tide hosted in Birmingham. Alabama is coming off of its highest SEC Championships fin-ish with a runner-up showing in 2009. The Tide has also turned out a number of All-SEC performers over the past four seasons with three golfers earn-ing five first-team All-SEC honors, including two first-team members in Kathleen Ekey and Camilla Lennarth in 2009. UA has also seen three golfers named to the SEC All-Freshman Team over the past two years, which gives the Tide its foundation for success this season. Tide coach Mic Potter was also selected as the SEC Coach of the Year in 2007.

GOLF 7

Entering head coach Mic Potter’s fifth season at the helm, the University of Alabama women’s golf team looks to build on the momentum cre-ated by two of the most successful seasons in school history, and solidify its place as one of the premiere programs in the nation. The Crimson Tide finished in the top five in nine of 12 events against a challenging schedule last season, including a team title at the First Market Bank Invitational and second-place fin-ishes at the SEC Championship and NCAA Cen-tral Regional. Despite losing the services of two-time All-American Kathleen Ekey, the Crimson Tide re-turns a wealth of experience from last year’s team that spent the entire season ranked in the top 10 and finished tied for 11th at the NCAA Championships. “You can’t say enough about the confidence and the momentum it builds being at the na-tional championships and being paired with teams like Southern Cal and Purdue in the first two rounds,” Potter said. “Playing with those teams that are always at or near the top, and realizing, we did this all year and that we’re as good as they are. We just need to believe that we’re as good as they are.” Junior Camilla Lennarth enters this season as Alabama’s most accomplished returner and boasts an impressive list of achievements in two seasons with the Tide, including honorable mention All-America honors last year from the National Golf Coaches Association. She led the team in scoring average last season at 73.70, the third-lowest total in school history, and fin-ished in the top 15 in nine of the 12 events she competed in. The Stockholm, Sweden, native has four top-five finishes in 23 career events. “(Camilla) is one that I see stepping up this year, and really feeling like she belongs,” Potter said. “Being named an All-American last year I think surprised her a little bit, but I think now she sees that she’s capable of not only honor-able mention but first team. When she stays fo-

cused and stays positive, she’s a great player.” Sophomore Brooke Pancake put together a dazzling freshman campaign, and will be re-lied on heavily in her second season. Pancake notched five top-10 finishes during her first year with the Tide and ranked as the nation’s best in fairways hit, driving the ball in the short grass 92 percent of the time. Seniors Helena Blomberg and Rhea Nair have competed in a combined 54 tournaments in three seasons with the Tide and both have proven themselves capable on the biggest of stages. Blomberg has six career top-10 finishes including a seventh place at the SEC Champi-onships her freshman year. Nair sat out the fall season last year with a wrist injury, but played all seven spring events and won her first colle-giate medalist honors at the First Market Bank Intercollegiate. “I think that Helena and Rhea coming in with more than three years of experience each com-peting with our team and at the intercollegiate level that we compete at now, it will all come together for them this season,” Potter said. Junior Courtney Harter has shown flashes of brilliance in her first two seasons at the Cap-stone showcased by her victory in her first col-legiate tournament, the Wildcat Invitational in the fall of 2007. Harter has played 20 events for the Tide, and last season she posted the team’s lowest 18-hole score with a 67 at the Cougar Classic. “How good your team is really comes down to depth more than anything else,” Potter said. “The fourth and fifth players are huge. So how they play will tell us how good of a team we’re going to have. All three are very capable; they’re all three capable of being All-Americans.” Adding to the depth of experienced per-formers for UA is incoming freshman Jennifer Kirby, who is currently dominating on the Cana-dian amateur circuit. The Team Canada mem-ber from Paris, Ontario, has won two straight national competitions, first at the Royale Cup

Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship fol-lowed by the Royale Cup Canadian Junior Girls Championship. “Jennifer has shot the scores that would indi-cate that she can step in and play for us and do well,” Potter said. “She’s the only person ever to win the Ontario Junior, Ontario Women’s Ama-teur, Canadian Women’s Amateur and Canadian Junior in the same year. I think the thing that I like best about her is that she seems to be in-credibly mature, incredibly self-reliant. It’s clear to me that she can play at this level.” The Crimson Tide fall schedule will have some familiar stops from past seasons along with a few new events. UA tees off first at the NGCA Match Play Championships in Daytona, Fla., Sept. 6-8, an event that the Tide took sec-ond place in last season. UA will also return to the Legends Golf Club in Franklin, Tenn., to play the Mason Rudolph Women’s Championship before playing the Tar Heel Invitational and the Landfall Tradition to wrap up the season. “We start out with the NGCA match play, and last year’s match play I think was a real spring-board for us when we made it to the finals,” Potter said. “Our team experienced some things in that tournament last year that they probably never experienced before competitively, so I think it’s good to have that in our first tourna-ment. It will be a good building block for us.” The highlight of the Tide’s spring schedule comes in April when Alabama hosts the SEC Championships for the first time since 1998. The tournament will be held at the NorthRiver Yacht Club marking the first time that the SEC champion will be crowned in Tuscaloosa as the last time UA hosted, the event was played in Birmingham. “We’re excited about hosting our fellow SEC members and doing a good job to make it the best SEC Tournament ever,” Potter said. “We hope to get the Tuscaloosa community involved too.”

ALABAMA8

Entering his fifth season at the helm of the Alabama women’s golf pro-gram, and his 28th overall in college golf, head coach Mic Potter has already established his own legacy. Potter, who came to the Capstone after a Hall-of-Fame career at Furman, led the Tide to its second NCAA Championship appearance in program his-tory in his very first year at Alabama and repeated the feat in 2007, 2008 and 2009, reaffirming his status as one of the prominent coaches in wom-en’s collegiate golf. The honors continue to pile up for Potter, who helped the Tide become a power to contend with in the ever-competitive SEC. The veteran coach won

his 10th Conference Coach of the Year award overall and his first in the SEC when he was named the league’s Co-Coach of the Year alongside Georgia’s Todd McCorkle in 2007. Potter’s 2008-09 team was a fixture in the top 10 nationally. The Crimson Tide finished the year 11th at the NCAA Championships and were ranked eighth nationally in the NGCA Coaches’ Poll and seventh in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index. The Tide captured their fifth tournament victory under Potter’s guidance in 2009 at the First Market Bank Intercollegiate. Alabama also finished tied for second at the SEC Championships and second at the NCAA East Regional.

Page 9: 2010 Women's Golf

UA had two players, Kathleen Ekey and Ca-milla Lennarth, earn first-team All-SEC honors in 2009 while rookie Brooke Pancake was selected to the league’s All-Freshman Team and awarded second-team All-SEC recognition. For the third consecutive season in 2009, Pot-ter produced All-Americans with Ekey and Len-narth garnering honorable mention accolades. In 2007 Potter helped two-time All-SEC performer Jenny Suh leave as an All-American. Potter fol-lowed that up when Ekey earned All-American honors in just her first season at Alabama. Ekey broke Suh’s school-record single season scoring average by posting a 73.30. Ekey, Lennarth and Pancake all earned NGCA All-East Region honors as well in 2009. The 2007-08 season saw Alabama put togeth-er its most successful season in school history. The Crimson Tide earned its third straight berth to the postseason and finished the season ranked No. 12 in the nation - a school record. Alabama won three tournaments on the sea-son, including the Crimson Tide Classic in record breaking fashion. Alabama turned in a school-record 54-hole score of 861 (-3) at the Ol’ Colony Golf Complex. UA shot a final round score of 279 (-9), also a school record to wrap up the Crimson Tide Classic. Five Tide golfers finished in the top 10 in the tournament to lead Alabama to a 42-stroke vic-tory over runner-up LSU at the par-72, 6,033 yard Jerry Pate designed course. Ekey shot a school record and women’s course record score of 65 (-7) to finish with a 54-hole score of 203 (-13) to win the tournament. At the NCAA Championship Potter led Ala-bama to its second-best result in school history. The Crimson Tide placed 12th overall and again improved on the previous year’s results - some-

thing Alabama has accomplished each season under Potter. The Crimson Tide also earned tournament ti-tles at the Wildcat Fall Invitational with a score of 889 and at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic. After the Classic, Sarah Sturm was named the Golf World Player of the Week. The legendary coach made an impact from the start. In his first season, Potter led his team to a tournament championship in his very first outing by winning Alabama’s own UA-Ann Rhoads Invi-tational in early September. The team set a school record that spring by shooting a 290 at the LSU/Cleveland Classic in March, and recorded two top-five finishes in the spring season. After qualifying for the East re-gional, the Crimson Tide put together an unlikely postseason run by defeating Virginia in a playoff to advance to the school’s second-ever NCAA Championship. Looking back on that resume, it comes as no surprise that Potter had his very first Tide team competing for a national championship. On June 17, 2005, the University of Alabama named 1994 NGCA Hall of Fame honoree Potter as its new women’s golf coach. By doing so, the Crimson Tide added one of the most illustrious names in women’s golf to its already rich golf heritage. Potter, one of the most experienced and suc-cessful coaches in the nation, has one of the most outstanding resumes in the nation, having guided Furman, a school competing in the Southern Con-ference, to national prominence in a long career with the Paladins. A 1994 National Golf Coaches Hall of Fame inductee, Potter spent 23 years coaching the Furman women’s team, including 10 years dur-ing which he served as the Paladins Director of Intercollegiate Golf.

During his two-decade tenure with the Pala-dins, Potter guided Furman to 15 NCAA Cham-pionship berths and six top-10 national finishes, including an NCAA runner-up finish in 1987. He has yet to coach a season in which his team has not reached NCAA Regional competition, a streak dating back to 1993, the first season in which the Regional format was established. Potter’s coaching accomplishments stand alone as an indication of the abilities of the 54-year old mentor. In addition to these outstand-ing achievements, his players have recorded as-tounding success, at both the intercollegiate level and in the professional ranks. The ability to build and maintain a program are certainly among Potter’s strengths when consid-ering the amazing run of success he had through-out his career at Furman. Potter took the school, with an enrollment of about 2,500 students, in to the upper tier of women’s golf schools, leading the Paladins to unprecedented heights. Potter was named Southern Conference Coach of the Year eight times and led his Furman teams to 36 tournament titles while his Tide teams have captured five tournament wins, which put him third among all active women’s golf coaches. To put that remarkable statistic in perspective, the Alabama women’s golf program had won 19 team titles through the beginning of the 2005-06 sea-son, a span of 31 years. The Paladins won 10 Southern Conference Championships since the tournament’s inception in 1994, including the 2004-05 championship. He has coached 21 NGCA All-Americans, 15 NGCA All-Scholar Team selections, 38 All-South-ern Conference selections, three players to five first-team All-SEC awards, 12 conference players of the year and four conference freshmen of the year.

One of the most important standards of success for any coach in major collegiate athletics is his or her ability to place players in the professional ranks while guiding them to a degree. Measuring Potter by these standards again places him among the very best in the na-tion. In 2004, Potter had seven of his former pupils on the LPGA tour, more than any other college coach from one school. In fact, only four schools: Arizona, Arizona State, Florida and Texas, had more than seven athletes on the LPGA player list in 2004. More importantly, each of the seven players coached by Potter had earned a degree. In the exceedingly competitive LPGA atmosphere, Potter’s former players have had long, successful careers in professional golf. Through the end of the 2004 season, former Potter pupils had amassed over 65 seasons on tour and over $8.5 million in career earnings. Leading that group is former Furman standout and Paladin Hall-of-Famer Dottie Pepper. Pepper had an illustrious LPGA career, win-ning 17 events, including the 1992 and 1999 Kraft Nabisco Champion-ships. She earned over $5 million in career winnings before ending her 20-year professional career in 2003. By any standard, Mic Potter has proven to be one of the best women’s golf coaches in the nation for more than two decades. He has built a successful program and maintained that by recruiting and cultivating talented players who advance to the professional ranks and obtain their degrees. A 1977 graduate of Cortland State University, Potter majored in physical education while earning four varsity letters: three in soccer and one in golf. He is married to the former Kim O’Branski of Ithaca, N.Y. The couple has two sons, Ryan and Corey.

Head coach Mic Potter is aided at the Capstone by assistant coach Susan Rosen-stiel, who is entering her seventh season on the Crimson Tide staff. A former collegiate golfer, she joined the Alabama coaching staff in the fall of 2003. Rosenstiel brings her vast and diversi-fied experience in women’s collegiate golf to the Tide’s program that has shown un-matched growth during her time at the University. Her wealth of SEC playing and coaching experience includes a playing ca-reer at Tennessee and Florida, time on the staff at the University of Florida and as an assistant golf professional. Rosenstiel assists Potter in all facets of developing the Crimson Tide players and program, including instruction, course management, coordination of golf opera-tions and recruiting. “Susan is a tremendous asset to this pro-gram,” head coach Mic Potter said. “Her ex-perience as a player and her ability to relate to our athletes make her an invaluable as-set. I’m thankful to have a coach with her ability in the program.” Rosenstiel, formerly Susan Conger, be-gan her collegiate playing career at the Uni-versity of Tennessee, playing two seasons

(1992-94) for the Lady Vols. She then trans-ferred to the University of Florida where she finished her playing career (1994-97) as a Gator. During her stay at UF, Rosenstiel gar-nered Academic All-America and Aca-demic All-SEC accolades. She earned her bachelor’s degree in agriculture, food and resource economics from the University of Florida in 1996 and received her master’s in exercise and sports sciences and sports management in 1999. While working on her master’s, Rosenstiel spent time as an assistant with UF’s College of Health and Human Performance. She also served as an intern to Florida’s Associate Athletic Director and Senior Women’s Ad-ministrator. After graduation, she worked as an assistant golf professional at the Tradi-tion Golf Club in Royal Palm Beach, Fla., and then at the Turtle Point Yacht and Country Club in Killen, Ala. The North Fort Myers, Fla., native was born on June 5, 1974, and is married to Dr. Tom Rosenstiel, a physician at Obstetrics & Gynecology of West Alabama. The couple has two children, Henry and Elizabeth.

ees of The University of Alabama officially dedicated the facility formerly known as The Football Building as the Mal M. Moore Athletic Facility.

Under Moore’s direction, Alabama’s athletic teams have produced several Southeastern Conference championships, winning titles in gymnastics, men’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s cross country, baseball and softball; taking SEC tournament titles in both base-ball and softball; and an NCAA gymnas-tics championship. Alabama athletes have earned some of the highest honors the SEC and NCAA have to offer, including SEC Ath-lete of the Year, SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, NCAA Top VIII, NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships and NCAA Sportsperson of the Year. These honors are over and above the individual conference and national titles that Alabama athletes continue to bring home to the Capstone on a regular basis.

In addition to making his mark on Alabama, Moore has also had a national impact as a key member of several prestigious NCAA and college football committees. Moore has served on the NCAA Division I Football Is-sues Committee, the SEC Athletic Directors Bowl Advisory Committee and the Big Six Conferences Minority Coaches Forum.

Moore’s distinguished record of service to UA began more than 50 years ago when he joined the Crimson Tide football squad as a scholarship player for Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant from 1958-62. Moore has the distinc-tion of being a part of seven national cham-pionship teams (1961, 1964, 1965, 1973, 1978, 1979, and 1992), 14 SEC championships, and 27 bowl trips during his career as a player and coach, the first as a member of the Crimson Tide’s 1961 national championship team. He is the only individual connected with the Tide program to be a part of seven national championships.

The University of Alabama’s Director of Athletics since 1999, Mal Moore has made an indelible mark on one of the nation’s most storied athletic programs, leading a department that has enjoyed tremendous success athletically and academically and has undergone an unprecedented period of growth during his tenure.

Through his guidance, Alabama’s athletic department remains focused on his vision of having all Crimson Tide athletic teams and student-athletes competitive at the highest level nationally while continuing to elevate athletic facilities at the Capstone to premier status nationally for all sports.

During his tenure as Director of Athletics, Moore has overseen more than $200 mil-lion of capital improvements to University of Alabama athletic facilities. Those proj-ects have encompassed the entire scope of all Crimson Tide athletic programs and have benefitted every Alabama student-athlete, coach, and administrator.

Throughout his multi-faceted career, Moore has worked with a diversified field of con-stituents, from fellow coaches and former players, to fans and the business commu-nity. All of those experiences and relation-ships - in addition to his ability to unify those many constituents - have made him the ideal person to lead Alabama athletics in the 21st century.

His leadership has been crucial in helping guide Alabama through a period that has been, at times, extremely challenging. His guidance and effort helped Alabama ath-letics weather the storm, while continuing to move in a positive direction toward a fu-ture that holds great promise.

Moore’s dedication to and love of the University of Alabama was recognized on March 28, 2007, when as a permanent tribute to his life-long contribution to The University of Alabama, the Board of Trust-

During a coaching career that spanned 31 years, Moore spent 22 of those at Alabama with stops at Montana State, Notre Dame and the NFL’s St. Louis and Phoenix Cardi-nals. At Alabama, Moore started as Coach Bryant’s graduate assistant in 1964, then as defensive backfield coach for five years beginning in 1965 before becoming quar-terbacks coach from 1971-82 and serving as the Tide’s first offensive coordinator start-ing in 1975. He would go on to coordinate all of the offensive plays for Alabama’s last four national championship teams.

A 1963 graduate of The University of Ala-bama, Moore holds both an undergraduate degree in Sociology and a 1964 Master’s De-gree in Secondary Education from the Cap-stone. Moore was born December 19, 1939, in Dozier, Ala. He has been married to the former Charlotte Davis of Tuscaloosa since July 20, 1968. They have one daughter, Mrs. Steve (Heather) Cook of Scottsdale, Ariz., a granddaughter, Anna Lee, and a grandson, Charles Cannon.

The Jerry Pate Golf Center at the Ol’ Colony Golf Complex provides the University of Alabama women’s golf team with one of the best practice and playing facilities in collegiate golf. The Pate Golf Center is a private facility that is only utilized by the Alabama golf teams. The Pate Golf Center provides plenty of space for both the men’s and women’s teams with the ability to conduct full practice sessions inside and out of any inclement weather. It has six indoor hitting bays and two indoor putting surfaces. The Pate Golf Center is also equipped with state-of-the-art teaching tools, including the V1 Swing Analysis System and Trackman, which aides the coaching staff in ball flight analysis using doppler radar and club fitting. The locker rooms inside the Pate Golf Center have tour-sized locker and all of the amenities while the lounge area includes comfortable seating and a large-screen television.

The Ol’ Colony Golf Course was named one of the “Top 5 Best New Public Courses in America” by Golf Digest in 2001. The Jerry Pate-designed course is considered one of the best public courses in the nation. It’s a test for even the most advanced golfer with large bunkers, mature trees and numerous water hazards, including a 25-arce lake that challenges almost every shot.

The practice range at the Pate Golf Center, which already provides the Crimson Tide golfers all of the practice components and tools needed to develop, is currently undergoing an expansion and renovation that will be completed by August of 2010. The practice facility currently includes a full practice range, putting greens, a chipping area and practice bunkers. The Jerry Pate Golf Center has already added a new putting green with an expanded chipping and hitting area under con-struction. The new chipping and hitting area is complete with new bunkers and practice tees that will allow players to hit their own golf balls up to 200 yards into six new target greens.

The University of Alabama women’s golf team will host the 2010 Southeastern Conference Champion-ship at the par 71, 5,963-yard NorthRiver Yacht Club. The Crimson Tide will play host to the SEC Women’s Championships for just the second time in school his-tory, and it will be the first time the event has been held in Tuscaloosa. The NorthRiver Yacht Club will serve as the perfect host site providing a challenging test of golf in a beautiful setting. Two highly regard-ed golf course architects have been involved in the shaping of the golf course at the NorthRiver Club. In 1978, the original Gary Player-designed Yacht course opened. Player routed the course through the beautiful undulating hills that grace the Tuscaloosa community called NorthRiver. In 1999, with the help of noted architect Bob Cupp, the course was rede-signed, adding bentgrass greens and modernizing the bunkering to challenge the expert player while providing forgiveness to the player still new to the game. NorthRiver is truly a course suitable for every category from accomplished player to novice.

Although the Alabama women’s golf team will only host the SEC Champion-ship in the 2009-10 season, the UA-Ann Rhoads Intercollegiate is an important aspect of the Crimson Tide program. The UA-Ann Rhoads Intercollegiate is a highly respected tournament that provides colle-giate golf teams from around the country a chance to play against a deep field of teams on a challenging golf course. The 2007 Ann Rhoads Intercollegiate marked the fourth time in five years that the Tide has hosted the tournament named for UA contributor Ann Rhoads. For the first time in the event’s history, the tour-nament was held at the NorthRiver Yacht Club, a par-71 course in Tuscaloosa that was originally designed by famed golfer Gary Player. Alabama tied for seventh place in the competitive field that featured three of the nation’s top-10 teams at the time. The tournament was the first that the Tide had hosted since the fall of 2005. Hel-ena Blomberg took sixth in the individual standings to lead the Tide. The Ann Rhoads Intercollegiate was also held in 2005, 2004 and 2003. The Crimson Tide won the 2005 Ann Rhoads Intercol-legiate at the Ol’ Colony Golf Complex. The Tide also finished third in 2004 and fourth in the inaugural tournament in 2003.

A CLOSER LOOK AT NCAA WOMEN’S GOLFMuch has changed in the way of collegiate golf since Alabama’s Eleanor Dudley won the first collegiate championship in 1941.

Most notably, there are now women’s collegiate golf teams. Alabama formed its first women’s team in 1974. World War II interrupted the women’s national championships from 1942-45, but in 1946 the tournament was begun anew and has continued uninterrupted, with an assortment of sponsors, every year since. The field of individuals competing has nearly tripled in those 54 years. In 1982, the NCAA, lured by the financial possibilities, finally got into the business of women’s athletics and hosting nationals, and that year there were two national team and individual titles, though Tulsa won both team titles. The NCAA took over the champion-ships in 1983 and has served as host since. Ohio State served as the host site for that final AIAW championship in 1982. Among the young women who make up the elite roster of national champions are some of the most famous names in profes-sional golf. The medalist roll call includes Nancy Lopez who won the national collegiate title as a Tulsa golfer in 1976, San Jose State’s Patty Sheehan who won in 1980, and professional golf’s latest golden girl, Annika Sorenstam, a U.S. Open champion who won the NCAA title in 1991 as an Arizona golfer.

Alabama’s women have had seven golf coaches, six of whom had a connec-tion with the University or state of Alabama.

• Ann Marie Lawler coached in 1974-75 and went on to become the women’s Athletics Director at Alabama. She also served as the Associate Athletics Director for Women’s Sports at the University of Florida.

• Conrad Rehling, the Tide’s first director of golf is honored in the NCAA Golf Coaches’ Hall of Fame, inducted in 1975, a year he led the Alabama men’s team to a third-place finish at nationals.

• Lynn Kurth Schafer, (1980-84), continued her career in the game of golf as a club professional, eventually ending up as the head golf pro at Bent Brook Golf Course in Bessemer. Schafer passed away in August of 2002 after bat-tling cancer.

• Dick Spybey, (1985-88), also coached the Tide men’s program and guided Alabama to consecutive NCAA Men’s Championship appearances in 1992, 1993 and 1994.

• Betty Palmer (1988-2005), not only grew up in Tuscaloosa playing on the University’s course, but lettered at Alabama from 1978-81. Palmer was named the SEC Women’s Golf Coach of the Year in 1993.
