One of the unique nicknames in all of intercolle-giate athletics belongs to The University of Akron. Originally Zippers, athletic director Kenneth “Red” Cochrane officially shortened the nickname to the Zips in 1950. Twenty-five years earlier a campus-wide contest had been conducted to choose a nick-name for The University’s athletics teams. Suggestions submitted by students, faculty, and alumni included Golden Blue Devils, Tip Toppers, Rubbernecks, Hillbillies, Kangaroos and Cheveliers. The winner, freshman Margaret Hamlin, received a prize of $10 for Zippers, a $6 pair of rubber overshoes and a brand name of the BF Goodrich Company. “Zippy” the kangaroo was officially declared the school’s mascot on May 1, 1953.

roSemoNT CoUNTry ClUb When the Zips hit the links, they have the benefit of playing at the Rosemont County Club, which serves as the official home course for The University of Akron women’s golf team. The championship course is located in nearby Fairlawn, Ohio, and is the site of the Zippy Invitational, an annual event that showcases some of the top col-legiate programs in the Midwest. The course, which was designed by the Hurdzan Design Group, features tree-lined fairways, subtle doglegs and bunkering.

Along with a renowned home golf course and an elite practice facility The University of Akron golf program recently acquired the K-VEST, a state-of-the-art game improvement system. As one of only a few schools with this training device, Akron joins the ranks of some of the top NCAA Division I golf teams, including Oklahoma State, Arizona State, Florida, Illinois and New Mexico. Usable for indoor facilities, driving ranges and on-course instruction, the K-VEST is a completely mobile, easy to use, interactive system that combines video analysis, 3-D analysis, and real-time feedback in one system. Different from current video systems, K-VEST uses three wireless sensors to provide coaches with a more accurate swing analysis and players with real-time visual and auditory feedback designed to help them see, hear and feel the instruction. The K-VEST enables players and coaches to accurately and consistently measure target alignment, posture, hip and shoulder rotation, hip movement at top, hip move-ment during swing and spine movement during swing. The University of Akron women’s golf team has played host to the Zippy Invitational in each of its three seasons as a varsity sport. Each year, the Zips welcome an exciting field of teams from across the country, including squads from the Mid-American Conference. Each Fall, the teams descend on par-72, 6,025-yard Rosemont Country Club, the home course for the Zips, for this three-round event. The 2010 edition of the Zippy Invitational will go down in program history as the Zips captured their first team title since the program’s beginning in 2008. Akron led wire-to-wire to post a four-stroke vic-tory with a three-round total of 950 (314-308-328). Before the victory, the Zips had posted four runner-up finishes. “The golf course played very tough, but our over-all play during both days of the event is what made the difference,” said UA head coach Jenny King. “I am very proud of how we dealt with the conditions and were able to come out with the win.” Junior Kristen Hill led the way for the Zips, tak-ing runner-up honors after posting a final-round 75 to finish with an 11-over 227 (79-73-75). In 2009, Akron posted a third-place finish at the Second Annual Zippy Invitational. The Zips recorded

a three-round score of 953 strokes behind strong play from Hill and Hanna ek. The Zips played host to their first home tour-nament in program history when they hosted the inaugural Zippy Invitational from Sept. 29-30, 2008.

The Zippy Invitational has played host to a number of programs, including MAC foes Ball State, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Ohio and Toledo. Other participants have included Bucknell, Cleveland State, Dayton, Detroit, Eastern Kentucky, Evansville, Marshall, Oakland, Robert Morris, Niagara, Youngstown State and others.

“Our inaugural event was a great success,” King said. “I was happy that most of the teams in the MAC came out to support the event in its first year. The course was in great shape and the members enjoyed seeing some great golf on their home course.”

Behind three top-10 performances, the Zips took advantage of their home course with a second-place finish with a two-day score of 943 (321-303-319). Eastern Michigan, which jumped out to a command-ing 20-stroke lead after the first two rounds, posted 315 strokes on the final day to win the 12-team tournament with a final score of 919 strokes (300-

The University of Akron’s indoor golf facility is one of the finest in the Midwest. In order to assist with each student-athlete’s play on the course, the indoor golf facility features a putting green, bunker and a video motion analysis system.

In addition to helping the players perform on the course, the golf facility also features offices for the coaching staff and a study lounge to help classroom performance.

The biggest advantage the facility gives the golf team is the ability to train year round. Along with the use of state-of-the-art technology for performance analysis, UA’s golf team now has an advantage over the nation’s top competition.

In addition to the indoor golf facility, the Stile Athletics Field House features a full 120-yard AstroPlay field and a 300-meter Mondo track.

Additional components of the building include specta-tor seating for approximately 1,200, a sports medicine center, varsity locker rooms and athletics equipment storage areas.

In 2006, additional offices were added to the facility, housing the coaching staffs for UA’s football, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, track and field, and cross country teams.

To help the team prepare for a long season on the course, the field house features a strength and condi-tioning center with over 8,000-square-feet of space, which includes both strength training and rehabilitation equipment.

This addition to UA athletics enables the women’s golf team and the rest of the University’s intercollegiate teams to have an advantage when it comes to recruit-ing the top student-athlete’s in the nation. All 19 of UA’s intercollegiate athletics teams have access to the area, both in season and for off-season conditioning workouts.

When it’s time to take prac-tice outside, the Zips are just a 10-minute drive away from their home course, the rosemont Country Club.

Since its inception in 1946, the Mid-American Conference has progressively grown and developed into one of the most aggressive Division I confer-ences in the country. One of only 11 football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) conferences, the MAC named Dr. Jon Steinbrecher as its eighth commissioner in the 64-year history of the league in March 2009. Steinbrecher came to the MAC after serving for six years as the commissioner of the Ohio Valley Conference.

The league has grown its commitment to cham-pionships by expanding to six its number of neu-tral site post season events – football (Detroit’s Ford Field), volleyball (Toledo’s SeaGate Centre), men’s and women’s basketball (Cleveland’s Quicken

Loans Arena), softball (Akron’s Firestone Stadium) and most recently baseball (Chillicothe’s VA Memorial Stadium). The MAC tied a league record in 2008 with five schools participating in bowl games – Buffalo (International); Ball State (GMAC); Central Michigan (Motor City); Western Michigan (Texas); and Northern Illinois (Independence Bowl). The 2008 season also saw the first MAC football team ranked in the Top 25 since 2003. Ball State was ranked as high as 12th in the BCS Standings, 12th in the AP and 13th in the USA Today Poll. The Cardinals were ranked in all three polls for 10 straight weeks. MAC football teams won a league record four games versus opponents from the Big Ten. Toledo became the first MAC team to ever beat Michigan in Ann Arbor; Ball State won its first-ever game against a Big Ten foe when the Cardinals beat Indiana; Central Michigan also defeated Indiana; and Western Michigan beat Illinois in a game played at Ford Field. In its partnership with ESPN, the MAC signed an eight-year rights agreement through the 2016-17 academic year for football, as well as men’s and women’s basketball. The deal will be the most extensive in the 63-year history of the con-ference. The new deal calls for a minimum of 25 events annually to be produced and aired on an ESPN platform including the men’s and women’s basketball championships, a regular-season MAC presence on ESPN, the Marathon MAC Football Championship and a minimum of 11 regular-season football games. Women’s athletics shined for the MAC this past year. For the first time in the history of the conference the MAC sent three teams to the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament (Miami, Ohio and Western Michigan). Western Michigan became only the third team to make it to the Sweet 16 (Ohio 2005 and Western Michigan 1983). In women’s basketball MAC Tournament Champion Ball State upset perennial national power Tennessee in the first round of the NCAA tournament, handing the Lady Vols their first ever loss in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. The victory was named “Pontiac Game Changing Performance” of the 2009 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament, while first-year head coach Kelly Packard was named Maggie Dixon Division I Rookie Coach of the Year by the WBCA. Akron continued its dominance of MAC men’s soccer with its 11 regular-season championship to go along with its sixth MAC Tournament title – both league records. The Zips were ranked as high as No. 2 during the season and reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament before falling to Northwestern, 1-0. Steve Zakuani, who helped guide the Akron men’s soccer program to a record-setting campaign in 2008, was the first overall pick of the 2009 Major League Soccer Super Draft. Zakuani earned 2008 MAC Men’s Soccer Player of the Year honors and was a finalist for the Hermann Trophy, which goes to the best men’s soccer player in the country. The conference now has national leadership positions on the following NCAA committees: Warde Manual, Buffalo (Academic Cabinet); Susan Lipnickey, Miami (Leadership Council and Infractions Appeals); Derrick Gragg, Eastern Michigan (Legislative Council); Dr. John Peters, Northern Illinois (Board of Directors); Tom Collins, Ball State (Amateurism Cabinet); Kelly Andrews, Toledo (Awards, benefits, Expenses & Financial Aid Cabinet); Stephanie Harvey-Vandenburg, Eastern Michigan (Recruiting & Athletic Personal Issues Cabinet); Brad Bates, Miami (Academic Performance); Eileen Jennings, Central Michigan (Infractions); Ted McKown, Kent State (International Students Records); Jim Klein, Toledo (Legislative Review & Interpretations); Karin Lee, Ball State (Minority Opportunities and Interest); Melody Reifel Werner, Eastern Michigan (Research); Catharine Marsszeky, Kent State (Student-Athlete Advisory); Lee Merserve, Bowling Green (Walter Byers Scholarship).

History of the mAC Based in Cleveland since July 1999 following a 15-year stay in Toledo, Ohio, the MAC has established historic measurements in both football and men’s and women’s basketball since moving to Northeast Ohio. The Mid-American Conference was founded as a five-school league on February 24, 1946 in Columbus, Ohio with Ohio, Butler, Cincinnati, Wayne State and Western Reserve admitted as charter members. The Mid-American Conference has 12 full-time schools and a 13th, Temple, for football only. Comprising the East Division is the University of Akron (joined in 1992), Bowling Green State University (1952), University at Buffalo (1998), Kent State University (1951), Miami University (1947), Ohio University (1946) and Temple University (2007). The West Division members are Ball State University (1973), Central Michigan University (1971), Eastern Michigan University (1971), Northern Illinois University (1975-86, 1997), University of Toledo (1950) and Western Michigan University (1947). In 1946 men’s basketball was the first competitive sport in the MAC, which now sponsors a total 23 sports. Women’s sports were brought into the confer-ence’s structure in 1980. For men, championships (11) are sponsored in football, basketball, baseball, cross country, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, wrestling, golf and tennis. For women, championships (12) are sponsored in basketball, softball, volley-ball, cross country, field hockey, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, gymnastics, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and tennis.

Jenny King, who has built The University of Akron women’s golf program from the ground up, is in her third competitive season at UA after being named head coach in April of 2007. In three seasons, the program has grown into a competitor for individual and team titles, against both non-conference competition and Mid-American Confer-ence foes. Through two-and-a-half seasons, the Zips have won one event, posted 12 top-five finishes and earned four individual tournament titles in 28 events. Additionally, individual honors have included two All-MAC selections (Kristen Hill, 2010 First Team, 2009 Second Team) and five MAC Golfer of the Week honors (Hill, 4; Hanna ek, 1). The fall 2010 season saw the Zips reach new heights as Akron won its first team title in program history at the Third-Annual Zippy Invitational (Oct. 11-12). Behind five top-25 performances, the Zips won the team title by four strokes. Ek earned the program’s fourth individual title in 28 events, taking 2010 MAC Preview individual honors (Oct. 18-19). UA finished in the top-10 in all five events. During the 2010 spring campaign, the Zips closed out the season on a strong note, posting four-consecutive top-five finishes. Akron just missed the program’s first team title at the First Market Bank Intercollegiate (March 19-20), finishing seven strokes behind the tournament-winner William and Mary. The slate saw then-sophomore Hill win two individual crowns, earn two MAC Golfer of the Week honors and First-Team All-MAC. After a pair of competitive showings in the first two tournaments of the fall 2009, Akron hit its stride – sparked by a third-place designation (among 15 teams) at the Second-Annual Zippy Invitational in early October. UA then cap-tured third place among a 16-team field at the Duramed MAC Preview (OCt. 12-13) the following week and capped off its impressive fall campaign with a fifth-place finish at the Ross Resorts Invitational (Oct. 26-27). As a team, the Zips not only showed great resolve for such a young squad but took a wave of confidence – based on those early successes during the fall – into the spring 2009 season, which was highlighted by the program’s third runner-up finish at the Tina Barrett Longwood Invitational (March 30-31) at the Manor Resort Golf Club in Farmville, Va. UA carded 971 strokes (326-326-319) to capture second place among the competitive 12-team field. First-year player Katie Jenior led a trio of top-20 finishers for Akron with a 12th-place designation at Longaberger Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio, as UA made an instant impact at its first ever league championship (April 24-26). The spring slate culminated with a tie for third place at the MAC Championship. For her con-sistent play all year long, first-year standout Hill not only became the program’s first MAC Golfer of the Week (Sept. 26) but also earned Second-Team All-MAC honors. Under King’s guidance, Hill captured her first collegiate win in just her second tournament as a collegian at the Cardinal Classic (Sept. 22-23, 2008) at The Players Club in Muncie, Ind.

Moreover, UA golfers were getting it done in the classroom as well as three standouts – Amanda butler, Ek and Tyler etcheberry – were named to the National Golf Coaches Association All-America Scholar Team. The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of collegiate athletics. The minimum cumulative Grade Point Average is 3.50 and student-athletes must have competed in at least 50 per-cent (Division I) and 66 percent (Division II and III) of the college’s regularly sched-uled competitive rounds during the year. Butler, a sports management major at UA, posted a 3.52 GPA in 2008-09 while teammates Ek, a civil engineering major, recorded a 4.0 GPA and Etcheber-ry, a business major, carried a 3.67 GPA. Just 410 women’s golfers were se-lected nationwide among Divisions I, II and III for the prestigious distinction. This academic excellence has continued through 2010 as the Zips entered the spring campaign with a lofty cumulative team GPA of 3.25. Hill’s development continued during summer when she qualified for the 2009 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship, which features some of the most talented female amateur golfers in the nation. With a handpicked, all-freshman starting lineup, UA hit the ground running in its inaugural season in 2008. The Zips burst on the scene with four top-10 finishes in five events during the fall, including back-to-back runner-up finishes.

coaches | heaD coach Jenny kinG/GraDuate assistant kirsty o’connor Prior to her arrival at Akron, King spent four seasons (2003-07) as an assis-tant coach at her alma mater, the University of Kentucky. Part of her role as an assistant with the Wildcats included her leading the junior varsity from 2003-05, assisting in the organization of the annual Wildcat Fall Invitational and practices, providing instruction and recruiting future student-athletes. King led the Kentucky JV squad to three tournament titles, winning team titles in 2004 and 2006, and tallied one runner-up finish with the varsity team. While at Kentucky, eight different players earned Academic All-SEC and four were tabbed National Golf Coaches Association Academic All-Americans, while Beth Felts was named 2007 SEC Co-Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Prior to returning to Kentucky, King was head coach at Transylvania University from 2001-03. During her first season as head coach, she led the Pioneers to a No. 23 national ranking in the NAIA. In 2002, the Pioneers climbed as high as No. 16 ranking in the NCAA Division III polls after their transition from the NAIA ranks. Under her direction, Transy claimed four team titles and five individual student-athletes won medalist honors. In addition, the Pioneers, who were HCAC conference runners-up, qualified for the 2002 NAIA National Championship, where the squad placed 16th and Pio-neer Catherine Benson finished runner-up individually, falling in a playoff. Benson would end her career as a two-time All-American, adding Academic All-America honors. Also under King’s leadership, Claire Baugh and Kendall Stivers were named HCAC All-Tournament, Megan Williams was the 2002 HCAC Freshman of the Year and Danielle Lahmers and Stivers were selected HCAC Academic Honor Students. King also has served as a PGA Apprentice and an assistant golf professional at the University Club of Kentucky in Lexington and as a golf operations assistant at Lexington Country Club. She additionally served as a golf operations assistant at Andover Country Club in Lexington. A four-year member of the Kentucky golf team, King served as team captain in 2000. During her collegiate career, she recorded one top-10 and three top-20 finishes, playing in 40 of the team’s scheduled 44 tournaments during her ca-reer. She was a member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll from 1999-2001 and was inducted into the University of Kentucky’s Frank G. Ham Society of Character in 2000. King, who lives in West Akron with her husband Jason, received her Bachelor of Business Administration from Kentucky in 2001 and her Master of Education - with an emphasis in Sports Leadership - from UK in 2006.

Kirsty O’Connor is in her first year as the graduate assistant for the Zips, joining Head Coach Jenny King’s staff after a success collegiate career at Ball State. A 2010 graduate of BSU, she was a four-year letterwinner for the Cardinals, posting eight top-five finishes, including two individual wins and two runner-up fin-ishes. Additionally, she posted 15 top-15 and 25 top-25 finishes and set school records for 18-hole (69) and 36-hole (143) scores. She completed her career with a 77.33 career scoring average, which ranks second in Ball State history. In 2009, she was named the Mid-American Conference Sportswoman of the Year. She also earned Second-Team All-MAC in 2008 and was named MAC Golfer of the Week on four occasions during her career. She earned her bachelor’s degree in German, with a minor in French. She earned NGCA Academic All-American Scholar and MAC Honor Roll status all four years, in addition to earning the MAC Commissioners and MAC Presidential awards. Born in Burnley, England, she was the 2008 Welsh Ladies National Champion and was a representative for Wales at the 2008 European Ladies Team Cham-pionships in Sweden.
