One of the unique nicknames in all of inter-collegiate athletics belongs to The University of Akron. Originally Zippers, athletic director Kenneth “Red” Cochrane officially shortened the nickname to the Zips in 1950. Twenty-five years earlier a campus-wide contest had been conducted to choose a nickname for The University’s athletics teams. Suggestions submitted by students, faculty, and alumni included Golden Blue Devils, Tip Toppers, Rubbernecks, Hillbillies, Kangaroos and Cheveliers. The winner, freshman Margaret Hamlin, received a prize of $10 for Zippers, a $6 pair of rubber overshoes and a brand name of the BF Goodrich Company. The evolution of Zippy, UA’s mascot, began 40 years ago when the student council decid-ed the University needed a mascot. “Zippy” the kangaroo was officially declared the school’s mascot on May 1, 1953. The first known printed reference to the mascot as “Zippy” was a 1965 Zip football press brochure. The Buchtelite’s first use of the name “Zippy” came Sept. 24, 1965, in an identification of a photo of the cheerleaders listing “Mascot - ‘Zippy’ - Charles Huettner.” In 2007, Zippy was named the Capital One National Mascot of the Year.

roSemont country club

When the Zips hit the links, they have the benefit of playing at the Rosemont County Club, which serves as the official home course for The University of Akron women’s golf team. The championship course is located in nearby Fairlawn, Ohio, and is the site of the Zippy Invitational, an annual event that showcases some of the top col-legiate programs in the Midwest.

The course features an award-winning design by the Hurdzan Design Group, features tree-lined fairways, subtle doglegs and bunkering. There are few wa-ter hazards and ravines to impede play. The course measures 5,260 yards from the women’s tees and 6,006 from the men’s tees. The championship blue tees course is 6,433 yards.

Rosemont Country Club began as the Montrose Club in 1920. In 1991, a new clubhouse was built, accompanied by a new swim and tennis complex, golf learning center and driving range.

The clubhouse is equipped with numerous amenities, including locker rooms for both women and men, steam room and sauna.

indoor PrActice fAcilityThe University of Akron’s indoor golf facility is one of the finest in the Midwest. In order to assist with each student-athlete’s play on the course, the indoor golf facility features a putting green, bunker and a video motion analysis system.

In addition to helping the players perform on the course, the golf facility also features offices for the coaching staff and a study lounge to help classroom performance.

The biggest advantage the facility gives the golf team is the ability to train year round. Along with the use of state-of-the-art technology for performance analysis, UA’s golf team now has an advantage over the nation’s top competition.

In addition to the indoor golf facility, the Stile Athletics Field House features a full 120-yard AstroPlay field and a 300-meter Mondo track.

Additional components of the building include spectator seating for approximately 1,200, a sports medicine center, varsity locker rooms and athletics equipment storage areas.

In 2006, additional offices were added to the facility, housing the coaching staffs for UA’s football, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, track and field, and cross country teams.

To help the team prepare for a long season on the course, the field house features a strength and conditioning center with over 8,000-square-feet of space, which includes both strength training and rehabilitation equipment.

This addition to UA athletics enables the women’s golf team and the rest of the University’s intercollegiate teams to have an advantage when it comes to recruiting the top student-athlete’s in the nation. All 19 of UA’s intercollegiate athletics teams have access to the area, both in season and for off-season condition-ing workouts.

Pnc wAgon wheel chAllengeOn Aug. 24, 2011, the athletics departments at The University of Ak-ron and Kent State University today announced participation in a new competition called “The PNC Wagon Wheel Challenge,” which further expands an intercollegiate athletics rivalry dating back more than a half-century between the two schools.

The PNC Wagon Wheel Challenge is based on a time-honored competi-tion for an historic wooden wagon wheel trophy awarded originally in 1945 to the winner of the annual Akron-Kent State football game. Start-ing with the 2011-12 academic year, the PNC-sponsored rivalry broaden the competition to include 15 NCAA varsity sports, with victories in each sport adding one point to the challenge standings.

Fans can learn more about the rivalry and follow the results and stand-ings via www.PNCWagonWheelChallenge.com.

“PNC’s new athletic challenge will spark more excitement in a broad range of sports between these rival schools,” said Kevin O. Thompson, PNC regional president for Akron, Canton and Wooster. “By showcasing the talents of student-athletes, we will further engage alumni and the community to support our schools.”

In keeping with tradition, the annual winner of the football contest will gain possession of the historic wooden Wagon Wheel trophy, while the school that accumulates the most total points in all varsity matchups for that academic year will receive an overall series trophy.

“The Akron-Kent State rivalry is a regional event and this partnership will help expand it to more sports and likewise more fans,” Akron direc-tor of athletics Tom Wistrcill said. “We’re excited to have PNC serve as sponsor of what is one of the more unique rivalries in college athletics. As members of the Mid-American Conference, the results of our compe-titions against one another are already very important, but the Wagon Wheel Challenge will increase the level of bragging rights around the community.”

According to legend, the “Wagon Wheel” trophy traces its beginnings to the spring of 1870 when Akron industrialist John R. Buchtel set out for the town of Kent in search of a site to establish a college. In the muddy Ohio fields, however, his wagon became bogged down in the area where Kent State University is currently located. When horses pulled the wagon, a wheel came loose and became buried until it was discovered in 1902 during the construction of a pipeline along the Western Reserve Trail.

The wheel eventually fell into the possession of Dr. Raymond Manches-ter, who as the Kent State Dean of Men in 1945, suggested the local his-toric artifact be offered as the trophy to the winner of the annual Akron-Kent State football game.

“College athletics is built on strong rivalries, and we’re fortunate to have one of the closest in the country with Akron,” Kent State director of ath-letics Joel Nielsen said. “We’re very appreciative of PNC’s support of the Wagon Wheel Challenge – this model has worked very well with other schools and it can only help grow this rivalry and make it even stronger.”

IMG College, the sponsorship and multi-media rights holder for both Akron and Kent State athletics negotiated the PNC Wagon Wheel Chal-lenge.

PNC Wagon Wheel Challenge - Rules and qualifying Sports• Each of the fifteen (15) sports will be worth one (1) point. For a school

to be the winner of The PNC Wagon Wheel Challenge, it must accumu-late at least eight (8) points.

• The point is awarded to the team that wins the season series in the head-to-head competition.

• If the teams play head-to-head once in a given season (e.g. football), then the school that wins will receive the point.

• All regular season games count toward the season series tally (in-cluding if non-conference games are played) with the school that wins more games (e.g., winning two of three in softball) receiving the point. If teams split the regular season matchups (e.g., in basketball), then each team receives a one-half (½) point for that sport.

• For men’s and women’s cross country, golf and indoor/outdoor track and field, one point is awarded to whichever school finishes higher in the MAC Championship for each of those sports. (For these sports, no other competitions – in-season or post-season – will count toward the series).

• MAC and/or NCAA Tournament games can count toward deter-mining the season series winner (e.g., the schools split the two regular season meetings in basketball and then meet in the MAC Tournament, whichever school wins that game is awarded the point).

• In the event of a 15-sports season tie, the school that won the trophy the previous year will retain possession.

the mid-AmericAn conferencethiS iS the mid-AmericAn conference

Providing leadership in education and diversity, the Mid-American Con-ference moves into its 66th year of service to the student-athlete.

Since its inception in 1946, the Mid-American Conference has progres-sively grown and developed into one of the most aggressive Division I conferences in the country. One of only 11 football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) conferences, the MAC named Dr. Jon A. Steinbrecher as its eighth commissioner in March of 2009.

The league has grown its commitment to championships by expanding to six its number of neutral site post season events – football (Ford Field, Detroit), volleyball (SPIRE Academy, Geneva, Ohio), men’s and women’s basketball (Quicken Loans Arena, Cleveland), softball (Firestone Stadi-um, Akron) and baseball (All Pro Freight Stadium, Avon, Ohio).

In 2011, the MAC set a conference record with a 4-1 record in bowl games and won the prestigious ESPN Bowl Challenge Cup for the best FBS conference record in bowl games. The MAC also tied a conference record for bowl invitations in a single season as the five bowl invitations marked the fourth time in conference history (2004, 2008, 2009, 2011). The five MAC programs that were extended bowl invitations included: Temple (Gildan New Mexico Bowl), Ohio (Famous Idaho Potato Bowl), Western Michigan (Little Caesars Pizza Bowl), Toledo (Military Bowl pre-sented by Northrop Grumman) and Northern Illinois (GoDaddy.com Bowl).

The 2011 season also witnessed Northern Illinois win the 2011 Mara-thon MAC Football Championship Game with a 23-20 win over Ohio. MAC programs were a combined 4-0 against Army last season (wins by Northern Illinois, Miami, Ball State and Temple), while Temple had an impressive 38-7 win at Maryland (ACC), Western Michigan’s 38-31 win at UConn (Big East), Ohio’s 44-7 win over Marshall (Conference USA) and Ball State’s 27-20 win over Indiana (Big Ten).

For the first time in its history, the MAC will have seven bowl relationships--three primary and four secondary. The three primary agreements are with the Little Caesar’s Pizza Bowl (Detroit, Mich.), GoDaddy.com Bowl (Mobile, Ala.) and Famous Idaho Potato Bowl (Boise, Ida.). In addition, the MAC has secured secondary agreements with the BBVA Compass Bowl (2012-2013), the Gildan New Mexico Bowl (2012-2013), the Beef O’Brady’s St. Petersburg Bowl (2012-13) and the TicketCity Bowl (2012).

In its partnership with ESPN, the MAC is in the fourth year of its eight-year rights agreement (through 2016-2017 academic years) for football, as well as men’s and women’s basketball. The deal is the most exten-sive in the 66-year history of the conference. The agreement calls for a minimum of 25 events annually to be produced and aired on an ESPN platform including the men’s and women’s basketball championships, a regular-season MAC presence on ESPN, the Marathon MAC Foot-ball Championship Game and a minimum of 11 regular-season football games.

Women’s athletics continued to shine for the MAC this past year. The MAC had a total of five women’s basketball programs invited to postsea-son tournaments. Eastern Michigan claimed the MAC tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, while Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Miami and Toledo all received at-large invitations to the WNIT Tournament. The Toledo Rockets were the defending WNIT champions and began the 2012 WNIT Tournament with wins over Detroit, Cincinnati and VCU before falling to Syracuse in overtime in the WNIT ‘Elite Eight’.

From two-time Super Bowl quarterback winning Ben Roethlisberger (Mi-ami University), NFL Defensive MVP James Harrison (Kent State Univer-sity), three NFL Pro Bowlers (Cleveland KR Josh Cribbs, San Diego TE Antonio Gates, Pittsburgh LB James Harrison), British Open winner Ben Curtis (Kent State University), World Series winning manager Bob Brenly (Ohio University) and Olympic bobsled team member Brock Kreitzburgh (University of Toledo), the Mid-American Conference continues to excel in producing leaders in the world of athletics.

hiStory of the mAcBased in Cleveland since July 1999 following a 15-year stay in Toledo, Ohio, the MAC has established historic measurements in both football and men’s and women’s basketball since moving to Northeast Ohio. The MAC was founded as a five-school league on February 24, 1946 in Co-lumbus, Ohio with Ohio, Butler, Cincinnati, Wayne State and Western Reserve admitted as charter members. The Mid-American Conference has 12 full-time schools and a 13th, UMass for football only beginning in 2012.

In 1946 men’s basketball was the first competitive sport in the MAC, which now sponsors a total 23 sports. Women’s sports were brought into the conference’s structure in 1980. For men, championships (11) are sponsored in football, basketball, baseball, cross country, soccer, swim-ming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, wres-tling, golf and tennis. For women, championships (12) are sponsored in basketball, softball, volleyball, cross country, field hockey, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, gymnastics, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and tennis.

mid-AmericAn conference commiSSionerdr. Jon A. Steinbrecher

Dr. Jon A. Steinbrecher enters his fourth year with the Mid-American Conference (MAC) after being named the league’s eighth commissioner on March 16, 2009.

Steinbrecher has expanded bowl opportunities for the conference and stabilized conference membership in football, increased national and re-gional television exposure, launched the conference’s first-ever digital network, renegotiated the conference marketing rights agreement with ISP/IMG College and enhanced neutral site conference championships in basketball, volleyball and baseball.

Specifically in football, Steinbrecher has stabilized and increased confer-ence membership with 13 programs as the MAC welcomes the addition of the University of Massachusetts (UMass) to begin as a football-only member in 2012. This provides the conference the opportunity to ex-pand the conference footprint into New England and into the Boston and Hartford/Springfield markets.

Steinbrecher has built upon the conference bowl agreements to a con-ference-best three primary (Little Caesars Pizza Bowl; GoDaddy.com Bowl and Famous Idaho Potato Bowl) and four secondary agreements (Gildan New Mexico Bowl, Beef O’Brady’s St. Petersburg Bowl, TicketC-ity Bowl and the BBVA Compass Bowl). These bowl agreements provide the MAC the opportunity to build on relationships with multiple bowl partners, expand national television exposure and broaden geographical opportunities to perform against other FBS conferences.

Steinbrecher directed a strategic planning process for the MAC, in-creased national exposure for the conference, as well as new opportuni-ties for the conference in the areas of a new regional television network deal, marketing and sponsorships and securing long-term partnerships for MAC neutral site championship events.

In the summer of 2010, the MAC entered into a three-year regional tele-vision deal with SportsTime Ohio to expand its television coverage in football and men’s and women’s basketball. This provides the MAC a regional television presence for programming throughout the year, and increases promotion and marketing opportunities for the conference.

He joined the MAC after serving six years as commissioner of the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC). Prior to the OVC, Steinbrecher served as com-missioner of the Mid-Continent Conference (the Summit League). He is the only person to serve as commissioner in all three NCAA Division I Subdivisions (FBS, FCS, DI).

head coach jenny kinG

Jenny King, who has built The University of Akron women’s golf program from the ground up, is in her fifth competitive season at UA after being named head coach in April 2007.

In four seasons, the program has grown into a competitor for four and team titles, against both non-conference competition and Mid-Amer-ican Conference foes. Through four seasons, the Zips have won three team titles, earned six individual tournament titles and posted 21 top-five finishes in 45 events. Additionally, individual honors have included four All-MAC selections (Kristen Hill – 2012 First Team, 2011 First Team, 2010 First Team, 2009 Second Team) and nine MAC Golfer of the Week honors (Hill, 6; Hanna Ek, 1; Katie Jenior 1).

For the fourth-consecutive season, three Zips under the watch of King – Amanda Butler, Sara Chaves and Laura Murray – earned National Golf Coaches Association All-America Scholar status. It was Butler’s fourth-straight honor and the first for Chaves and Murray. The team’s stellar performance in the classroom helped vault Akron into the top five in team GPA in the nation (3.766). UA finished with the fourth-best GPA in the nation, the highest finish in program history and the second-straight finish inside the top 10 (t10th, 2010-11).

The 2011-12 season will be remembered as the winningest season in program history. In all, the Zips captured two team and two individual tournament titles, including a sweep of the Fourth Annual Zippy Invi-tational. Jenior guided the Zips to a 24-stroke victory at the event, the second-consecutive title at the event for Akron, with a school-record two-round score of 145 (+3). The victory was the first for Jenior and earned her MAC Golfer of the week. In all, the Zips posted four top-10 finishes in five events in the fall of 2011.

The spring of 2012 saw the Zips post five top-10s in six events, including a wire-to-wire win at the EKU Colonel Classic and a fourth-career indi-vidual title for Hill. Hill’s clutch birdie on the 18th and final hole of the tournament secured the victory. At EKU, the Zips showed determination to hold onto a two-stroke advantage entering the final day, pulling away from the field to win by seven strokes. UA concluded the season with a fifth-place showing at the MAC Championships, highlighted by top-25 finishes by Jenior (13th), Hill (t14th) and Butler (t23rd).

In 2010-11, Ek, Butler, Tyler Etcheberry and Jenior were all named Aca-demic All-MAC, with Ek making the first team. Ek was also named to the Capital One Academic All-District® Women’s At-Large Second Team for District IV by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the first player in program history to earn that honor. Ek has a 3.973 cumulative GPA through the 2011-12 academic year while study-ing mechanical engineering.

After a successful 2010 fall campaign, the 2011 spring season saw the Zips break several school records as a team and by an individual. As a team, Akron broke the school record for a single-round team score (293) and three-round team score (891) at the Lumberjack Shootout at Wigwam (March 14-16, 2011). Their score of 293 during the final round came one day after the Zips tied the school record with a round of 296. The three-round score of 891 broke the previous program mark by 19 strokes. The season also saw Hill earn two MAC Golfer of the Week honors as the Zips would finish the year with five top-six finishes in six events, capped off with a tie for fourth place at the MAC Champion-

ships. Additional records for the season included Hill bettering her sea-son average (75.21) and career average (76.27) marks.

The fall 2010 season saw the Zips reach new heights as Akron won its first team title in program history at the Third-Annual Zippy Invitational (Oct. 11-12, 2010). Behind five top-25 performances, the Zips won the team title by four strokes. Ek earned the program’s fourth individual title in 28 events, taking 2010 MAC Preview individual honors (Oct. 18-19, 2010). UA finished in the top-10 in all five events.

During the 2010 spring campaign, the Zips closed out the season on a strong note, posting four-consecutive top-five finishes. Akron just missed the program’s first team title at the First Market Bank Intercol-legiate (March 19-20, 2010), finishing seven strokes behind the tourna-ment-winner William and Mary. The slate saw then-sophomore Hill win two individual crowns, earn two MAC Golfer of the Week honors and First-Team All-MAC.

After a pair of competitive showings in the first two tournaments of fall 2009, Akron hit its stride, sparked by a third-place designation (among 15 teams) at the Second-Annual Zippy Invitational in early October. UA then captured third place among a 16-team field at the Duramed MAC Preview (Oct. 12-13, 2009) the following week and capped off its im-pressive fall campaign with a fifth-place finish at the Ross Resorts Invita-tional (Oct. 26-27, 2009).

As a team, the Zips not only showed great resolve for such a young squad but took a wave of confidence, based on those early successes during the fall, into the spring 2009 season. The season was highlighted by the program’s third runner-up finish at the Tina Barrett Longwood Invitational (March 30-31) at the Manor Resort Golf Club in Farmville, Va. UA carded 971 strokes (326-326-319) to capture second place among the competitive 12-team field.

First-year player Jenior led a trio of top-20 finishers for Akron with a 12th-place designation at Longaberger Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio, as UA made an instant impact at its first ever league championship (April 24-26, 2009). The spring slate culminated with a tie for third place at the MAC Championship. For her consistent play all year long, first-year standout Hill not only became the program’s first MAC Golfer of the Week (Sept. 26, 2008) but also earned Second-Team All-MAC honors. Under King’s guidance, Hill captured her first collegiate win in just her second tournament as a collegian at the Cardinal Classic (Sept. 22-23, 2008) at The Players Club in Muncie, Ind.

Moreover, UA golfers were getting it done in the classroom as well as three standouts - Butler, Ek and Etcheberry - were named to the NGCA All-America Scholar Team.

head coach jenny kinG | GRaduate assistant amanda butleRThe criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of collegiate athletics. The minimum cumulative grade-point average is 3.50 and student-athletes must have competed in at least 50 percent (Division I) and 66 percent (Division II and III) of the college’s regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year.

Butler, a sports management major at UA, posted a 3.52 GPA in 2008-09 while teammates Ek, a mechanical engineering major, recorded a 4.0 GPA and Etcheberry, a business major, carried a 3.67 GPA. Just 410 women’s golfers were selected nationwide among Divisions I, II and III for the prestigious distinction.

This academic excellence has continued through 2010 as the Zips en-tered the spring campaign with a lofty cumulative team GPA of 3.25. Hill’s development continued during summer when she qualified for the 2009 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship, which features some of the most talented female amateur golfers in the nation.

With a handpicked, all-freshman starting lineup, UA hit the ground run-ning in its inaugural season in 2008. The Zips burst on the scene with four top-10 finishes in five events during the fall, including back-to-back runner-up placings.

Prior to her arrival at Akron, King spent four seasons (2003-07) as an as-sistant coach at her alma mater, the University of Kentucky. Part of her role as an assistant with the Wildcats included her leading the junior varsity from 2003-05, assisting in the organization of the annual Wildcat Fall Invitational and practices, providing instruction and recruiting.

King led the Kentucky JV squad to three tournament titles, winning team titles in 2004 and 2006, and tallied one runner-up finish with the varsity team. While at Kentucky, eight different players earned Academic All-SEC and four were tabbed National Golf Coaches Association Aca-demic All-Americans, while Beth Felts was named 2007 SEC Co-Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Prior to returning to Kentucky, King was head coach at Transylvania Uni-versity from 2001-03. During her first season as head coach, she led the Pioneers to a No. 23 national ranking in the NAIA. In 2002, the Pioneers climbed as high as a No. 16 ranking in the NCAA Division III polls after their transition from the NAIA ranks. Under her direction, Transylvania claimed four team titles and five individual student-athletes won medal-ist honors.

In addition, the Pioneers, who were Heartland Collegiate Athletic Con-ference runners-up, qualified for the 2002 NAIA National Championship, where the squad placed 16th and Pioneer Catherine Benson finished runner-up individually, falling in a playoff. Benson would end her career as a two-time All-American, adding Academic All-America honors. Also under King’s leadership, Claire Baugh and Kendall Stivers were named HCAC All-Tournament, Megan Williams was the 2002 HCAC Freshman of the Year and Danielle Lahmers and Stivers were selected HCAC Aca-demic Honor Students.

King also has served as a PGA Apprentice, an assistant golf professional at the University Club of Kentucky in Lexington and as a golf operations assistant at Lexington Country Club. She additionally served as a golf operations assistant at Andover Country Club in Lexington.

A four-year member of the Kentucky golf team, King was team cap-tain in 2000. During her collegiate career, she recorded one top-10 and three top-20 finishes, playing in 40 of the team’s scheduled 44 tourna-ments during her career. She was a member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll from 1999-2001 and was inducted into the University of Kentucky’s Frank G. Ham Society of Character in 2000.

King, who lives in West Akron with her husband Jason, received her bachelor of business administration from Kentucky in 2001 and her Mas-ter of Education – with an emphasis in sports leadership – from UK in 2006.

Amanda Butler is in her first season as the graduate assistant for the Zips, joining the Akron staff after completing her collegiate career at UA.

As a member of the Zips squad, she was a four-year letterwinner and part of the first senior class in Akron women’s golf history. She is the only Zip selected as a National Golf Coaches Association Academic All-American in four-straight seasons.

She competed in 44 career events, recording 13 top-25 finishes, includ-ing a career-best six during her senior campaign (2011-12). She helped the Zips to three tournament titles, including two as a senior, and carded a personal-best round of 72 as a senior.

Butler earned her bachelors degree in sports management in 2012 and is pursuing her masters degree in sports management.

Born in South Korea, Butler was a two-time Iowa High School State Champion and finished her senior year as the top-ranked golfer in the state by the Iowa High School Golf Coaches Association. She was also the 2008 Iowa High School Golfer of the Year after not playing golf until her freshman year of high school.
