One of the unique nicknames in all of intercollegiate athletics belongs to The University of Akron. Originally Zippers, athletic director Kenneth “Red” Cochrane officially short-ened the nickname to the Zips in 1950. Twenty-five years earlier a campus-wide contest had been conducted to choose a nickname for The University’s athletics teams. Suggestions submitted by students, faculty, and alumni included Golden Blue Devils, Tip Toppers, Rubbernecks, Hillbillies, Kangaroos and Cheveliers. The winner, freshman Margaret Hamlin, received a prize of $10 for Zippers, a $6 pair of rubber overshoes and a brand name of the BF Goodrich Company. The evolution of Zippy, UA’s mascot, began 40 years ago when the student council decided the University needed a mascot. “Zippy” the kangaroo was officially declared the school’s mascot on May 1, 1953. In 2007, Zippy was named the Capital One National Mascot of the Year.

AKRON ZIPSSEASON PREVIEW

Forwards Experience in the attacking third is something that University of Akron women’s soccer coach Chris Pfau will have plenty of in 2011. A trio of forwards that includes a potentially record-breaking senior and a pair of talented goal-scoring juniors will look to wreak havoc on opposing backlines this fall. The corps of veteran strikers begins with senior Rachel Phillip. One of the most prolific goal scorers in UA history, Phillip looks to build on a junior season where she found the back of net four times and added a pair of assists. Add those scoring totals to her five goal, two assist sophomore season and her three goal, one assist freshman campaign and Phillip sits in the top five in career points (third), goals (t-third), game-winners (t-fourth), assists (t-fifth) and shots (fifth) at UA. The drop-off in talent after Phillip is marginal at best, with talented juniors Katie Wise and Ashley Hughes also always posing an offensive threat. Wise scored four goals of her own 2010 – including a remarkable hat trick in which she scored three times in a span of 3:08 against Illinois State. Wise also has a nose for the important scores with four of her seven career goals being game-winners. Hughes also has the ability to put the ball in the back of the net, as she did twice last season. The Rochester, N.Y. native has started 2011 on the right foot, scoring twice in Akron’s exhibition shutout of Cleve-land State on Sunday. Hughes - who was also called to participate in a U19 U.S. Soccer Interregional Training Camp during the offseason – will be looking for a breakout year in 2011. Combined, the three strikers have played in 119 games and scored 19 times, a goal total that is sure to rise in 2011.

Midfielders A fifth-year senior and a 2010 Mid-American Conference All-Freshman Team performer highlight the pool of players controlling the midfield for the 2011 University of Akron women’s soccer team. Fifth-year senior Jordan Clark will lead not only the midfield, but the entire side in 2011. Clark – who missed the majority of her sopho-more season with a knee injury – has a chance to become the UA career games played leader in 2011. The Brecksville, Ohio native has scored six goals and added three assists in her UA career, playing most of her time in a holding midfield role. Clark also gained valuable experience this summer as a member of the Dayton Dutch Lions of the USL W-League. Columbus native Kelly DeNiro returns in 2011 and looks to build on a immensely successful freshman season where she scored once and dished out five assists. DeNiro’s five assists tied the UA record for the helpers in a season and helped her receive a nod on the MAC All-Fresh-man team. DeNiro also received some regional praise when she was called into the U19 Regional Olympic Development Camp this summer. DeNiro also saw action this summer with Ohio Premier Women’s SC of the Women’s Premier Soccer League. Sophomore Maggie Rusnak is also set to be a staple in Chris Pfau’s midfield this season after making 17 starts last season, with many of the starts coming as a part of Akron’s defensive unit. Rusnak did con-tribute on assist in 2010 and is expected to provide more offense from her new position in 2011.

Defenders & Goalkeepers Perhaps the most experienced set of players on the 2011 Univer-sity of Akron women’s soccer roster are the defenders and goalkeepers. Four starting defenders from 2010 and a goalkeeper who has made the most saves in program history anchor the defense for coach Chris Pfau in 2011. The strength of the defensive unit begins at center back with se-niors and co-captains Liz Cloutier and Kara Cooper. Cloutier has started every game of the past two seasons after transferring to UA from Toledo prior to her sophomore season and was a mainstay in the center of the defense last season, being subbed out in only four contests. She has also added two goals – both coming against Bowling Green – in her Akron career. Cooper was also a stalwart at center defender in 2010 – her first season in Akron after spending her first two years at Youngstown State – making 12 starts. Cooper’s time at YSU was spent as a forward and she showed some of her playmaking ability last season when she pushed forward to create offense from the back.

Sophomores Amber Kern and Gillian Gross make up the rest of the defensive unit after both seeing significant time at outside back during their freshman seasons. Kern appeared in all 19 matches in 2010 and made 17 starts – registering one assist. Gross played in 11 matches and made four starts before being sidelined with an injury but has returned to full strength for 2011. In goal for Pfau in 2011 is veteran keeper Jeny Wolbert. Wolbert is looking to cap off a spectacular collegiate career, having already broken the UA career record for saves (217). Wolbert has also posted 10 career shutouts and played nearly 4000 minutes in goal during her career as a Zip.

Newcomers Part of the growing success of The University of Akron’s women soccer team has been the solid recruiting classes brought in by Pfau. The crop of newcomers joining the Zips in 2011 is no exception. Pfau added nine freshmen to his roster for the 2011 season and fans can expect to see members of this group make an immediate im-pact on the pitch this fall. Two rookies – Hailey Kirkwood and Alexan-dra Frawley - expected to see themselves in the middle of the action at the onset of the season. Kirkwood, who is one of three fresh faces (Lexa Green, Meghan Brascia) from Las Vegas and Neusport FC, is penciled to make her first collegiate start in Friday’s season-opener at Michigan. Kirkwood scored 11 goals and added 29 assists as a defender during her career at Cimarron-Memorial High School and played for a Neusport side that was ranked 6th in the Rocky Mountain Region. Frawley, a Washington, Pa. native who finished her high school ca-reer at The Linsley School in Wheeling, W.Va., figures to factor into the Zips’ midfield plans when the season opens Friday. Frawley capped her impressive prep career by being named the Division Three Player of the Year in West Virginia and was ranked 9th in the region by TopDrawer Soccer. Kirkwood and Frawley, along with the rest of this year’s class of new players, are the latest student-athletes putting Akron women’s soc-cer on the map.

The Scedule Two trips to the state of Florida and home matches against Michi-gan State and five Mid-American Conference foes at Cub Cadet Field, formely Lee R. Jackson Soccer Field, highlight the 2011 University of Akron women’s soccer schedule, fourth-year head coach Chris Pfau an-nounced Thursday. The Zips will also play three sides that qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season. “Once again we have put together a schedule that will prepare us physically and mentally for our conference matches,” said Pfau. “Along with our two trips to Florida, we want to challenge our players against some of the best programs in the country.” Akron begins the season with the first of two Big Ten opponents when it travel to Michigan on Aug. 19. The Wolverines were an at-large selection to the NCAA Tournament in 2010. The Zips will then make the first of two trips to the state of Florida when they head south to take on Florida International for the first time in program history on Aug. 27. Akron will get its first chance to test the pitch at FirstEnergy Sta-dium - Cub Cadet Field the following weekend hosting Michigan State on Sept. 4. “We are very excited about bringing a Big Ten opponent, Michi-gan State, to our new stadium,” said Pfau. Participation in a tournament at the University of South Florida will comprise the squad’s second Florida trip. Akron will take on the host Bulls - who advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season - on Sept. 9 and Florida Atlantic two days later (Sept. 11). Akron’s final non-conference test will be a home match with Eastern Illinois on Sept. 17. The conference slate sees the Zips travel to Northern Illinois, West-ern Michigan, Ball State, Toledo, Kent State, and Buffalo. UA will play conference foes Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Bowling Green, Miami, and Ohio at home. The 2011 MAC Tournament begins with quarterfinal action at campus sites on Oct. 30. The semifinals and finals are slated for Nov. 4 and 6 at the campus of the highest remaining seed.

AKRON ZIPS

Entering his fourth season as the coach of The University of Akron women’s soccer team, Chris Pfau (pronounced Fow) continues to elevate Akron into one of the top women’s soccer programs in the Mid-American Conference and the entire Midwest. In his first three years, Pfau has taken a program that had produced just one winning season and no MAC Tournament appearances in its first seven years of existence, to a MAC East Division Championship (2009) and back-to-back MAC Tournaments (2009, 2010). Pfau’s side has dominated the MAC East during the last two seasons, going undefeated against fellow East Division foes in 2009 (5-0-0) and 2010 (4-0-1). After a slow start to the 2010 campaign, the Zips found their stride in the season’s second half, surging to the finish the regular season with four straight wins and falling one point shy of its second straight MAC East Division Championship. The side did secure a second straight MAC Tournament appearance, losing to number two seed Miami in the first round. Freshman Kelly DeNiro was named to the Freshman All-MAC Team after a stellar rookie season where she scored one goal and added five assists – tying her for the UA record for helpers in a season. Pfau’s mentoring also produced the breaking of the career saves record by Jeny Wolbert and the career assists record by Jordan Baranowski. The 2010 season also saw a pair of Zips earn CollegeSoccer360 Primetime Performer of the Week honors. Katie Wise received the nod after her hat trick in the season-opening win over Illinois State (Aug. 20) at FirstEnergy Stadium-Cub Cadet Field and Rachel Phillip took the hon-or after netting a pair of markers in the 2-1 overtime victory at Miami on Oct. 17. Both Wise and Phillip took home MAC Offensive Player of the Week awards for their efforts as did Leigh Cullen after she completed a hat trick in the win over Canisius on Sept. 3. The 2009 season was capped off by a six-game winning streak to finish the regular season. During that streak, the Zips conceded just one goal to finish the season 9-7-1 in the MAC and claim the first ever confer-ence title in just the ninth season as a varsity program. Pfau, whose resume boasts a wealth of collegiate and professional coaching and playing experience, made an almost immediate mark on the program in his first season and has the Zips poised to take another jump during their tenth year as a varsity sport.

In 2008, Akron went undefeated during its first five matches. In-cluded in the team’s exciting start was a 6-2 home win over Big East foe Pittsburgh in the season-opener. Other highlights of Pfau’s inaugu-ral campaign at UA included Britni Bäck earning All-Ohio and All-Mid-American Conference Honors. Back was also named to the Soccer Buzz National Elite Team of the Week (following the win over Pitt), marking the first time an Akron has earned that distinction. Additionally, five Zips were named Academic All-MAC Honorable Mention. Pfau’s student-athletes also excel in the classroom. The Zips hold a current cumulative team grade point average of 3.3 and the 2011 squad boasts four student-athletes with GPAs above 3.7. Prior to taking the reins of the Akron program, Pfau spent three seasons (2005-07) as head coach at Evansville, where he orchestrated an overhaul which resulted in the Aces being one of the nation’s most improved programs during that period. Pfau posted a three year record of 30-22-4 at Evansville, winning 10 matches each season and leading the Aces to the Missouri Valley Conference finals in 2006, and the MVC semifinals and a regional ranking in 2007. He inherited a program that had experienced down times, as the Aces went from league champions in 2001 to a Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) of 302 over the next three seasons prior to his arrival. In 2005, Pfau’s first season at the helm, the team had the seventh most-improved record in the nation and in 2007 pulled its RPI to 72. Much like at Akron, Pfau’s impact on the Evansville program was immediate as his first squad set a school record for non-conference win-ning percentage (.818), produced three All-MVC players and reached the semifinals of the league tournament. Also, newcomer Kayla Lam-bert was named First Team All-MVC, MVC Freshman of the Year, All-Great Lakes Region and Freshman All-American. In 2006, the Aces improved their league record to 3-3-0 and did even better in the conference tournament, reaching the title match. It took an overtime goal to keep them from making their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2001. At season’s end, Evansville had six players named All-MVC and three student-athletes finished among the NCAA’s top 50 in points for the season, while Lambert and Mia Tofano were each named all-region. Also that season, Pfau and his assistant coaches, Krista McKendree and Alison Weimer, were chosen by their peers as the MVC Women’s Soccer Coaching Staff of the Year.

Prior to joining the UA staff, he served as head men’s coach at Divi-sion II Chowan University (N.C.) during the 2005-06 season. Preceding his time at Chowan, he was assistant women’s coach at D-II Northwest Missouri State from 2003-05. In 2007, Evansville compiled a 10-5-3 overall record and went 3-1-2 versus league opponents. As a reward for their outstanding campaign, five players were named All-MVC, including four first-team picks. Lam-bert, a junior who played three seasons for Pfau, was named all-region and became just the second player in program history to make that honorary squad three times. In addition to his on-the-field success, Pfau’s teams have excelled in the classroom. A total of six Academic All-MVC honors were bestowed upon the Aces over his three years as mentor of the program, includ-ing a league-best three in 2007. Also in 2007, Evansville posted a team grade-point average of above 3.0, thereby earning the National Soccer Coaches Association of American (NSCAA) Team Academic Award. Pfau took over the Evansville program following two seasons (2003 and 2004) as the top assistant coach at Princeton. In 2004, the Tigers went undefeated in Ivy League competition en route to reaching the final four of the NCAA College Cup - making them the first women’s soccer program in that conference to reach the semifinal round. A 1989 graduate of Old Dominion, Pfau played professionally for 10 years in the APSL, NPSL and WSL. He began his coaching career while playing, serving as head coach of the Cincinnati United Soccer Club from 1995-99 and as assistant coach of the Cincinnati Riverhawks of the A-League from 1997-99. Shanna Caldwell is in her fourth season as an assistant coach at The University Akron, with her primary focus coming as goalkeeping coach and co-recruiting coordinator. She currently mentors two ‘keepers in-cluding senior Jeny Wolbert, who already holds the UA record for saves in a career. In addition to coaching Wolbert, Caldwell mentored graduated se-nior Michelle Smith, who kept goal during Akron’s successful late season push for a Mid-American Conference Tournament berth in 2010. Smith compiled a record of 4-1-1 last season and held a goals against average of 0.94 – a UA single season record. Caldwell’s arrival in Akron comes after spending two seasons at Bay-lor, one season at Alabama and three years at Oklahoma. In 2006, she helped guide Baylor goalkeeper Ashley Noah to First-Team All-Big 12 Conference honors. Under Caldwell’s guidance, Noah finished the season ranked third in the league in saves and second in the conference in saves per game. In her stint at Alabama (2005), Caldwell primarily served as goalkeep-er coach when the Crimson Tide net-minders posted an impressive .740 save percentage and a 1.40 goals-against average on the season. Prior to her arrival at Alabama, Caldwell was as an assistant coach at Oklahoma. In her three seasons (2002-05) with the Sooners, she helped mentor a team that advanced to the 2003 NCAA Tournament as OU finished the season with an 8-7-5 record and four shutouts. As a collegiate student-athlete, Caldwell proved herself to be one of the nation’s top goalkeepers. She spent three seasons at that position at Connecticut. In 2001 as a senior, she led the NCAA in goals-against average, reserving her spot among some of the legends of the game. Her efforts that season helped lead the Huskies to their third-straight Big East Northeast Division title and 20th-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. Before her collegiate career she was a member of the Olympic Devel-opment Program’s U20 National Pool. Caldwell also spent time in the W-League between 1999 and 2001, where she played for the Greensboro Sparks and the Virginia Beach Piranhas. Caldwell, who holds a NSCAA Goalkeeper I diploma and a USSF D License, earned her bachelor’s degree in sociology from Connecticut in 2002.
