FANTASTIC FALL SHOWS THAT KNIGHTS ARE ON THE RISE

GETTING BETTERSenior Victoria Tomko (below left ) entered the fall with a 79.63 career stroke average. She averaged 76.89 this past fall, including her fi rst career even-par round. Junior Kati e Detlefsen (below right) averaged 79.17 last year but dropped that by 2.5 strokes this fall to a 76.67 on the strength of her fi rst two career even-par rounds. Elisa Aoki saw similar results. She averaged 79.13 last spring as a mid-year enrolled freshman. Aoki improved to 76.56 in the fall, including two Top 10 fi nishes and three Top 20 placements.

Things are really starti ng to come together for the Knights. Not only did UCF have two top three team fi nishes at events, including Kentucky’s Betti e Lou Evans Fall Invitati onal (pictured above) but the Knights golfers excelled as individuals. All three of the team’s returnees signifi cantly improved their 2008-09 stroke averages during the fall. It all added up to great showings as four diff erent UCF golfers accounted for a total of six Top 10 fi nishes this fall. With balance like that, things are looking good on the Knights’ quest for a third consecuti ve NCAA Regional appearance and possibly beyond.

VALENTINA’S VALUEFreshman Valenti na Fontaine immediately showed her ability at the collegiate level this fall, posti ng a 74.56 stroke average with four of her nine rounds being at par or bett er. She placed second at the FIU/Pat Bradley Invitati onal (above). The 74.56 average is on pace to break the UCF seasonal record.

HOME COURSE ADVANTAGES

Orlando is perhaps America’s golf capital, home to most PGA and LPGA Tour stars during the winter. The city has some of the coun-try’s fi nest courses and the Knights enjoy playing ti me on many of them. This variety allows the Knights to prepare for diff erent types of courses during the season.

Section 1.indd 3 2/5/2010 10:27:28 AM

Page 6: 2010 UCF Women's Golf Yearbook

WHERE THE KNIGHTS PLAYThe UCF women’s golf team uti lizes several of the impressive courses in the Orlando area for practi ce and playing. Head coach Courtney Trimble’s Knights have access to some of the top country clubs in the golf-crazy region.

The North Shore Golf Club (top right) is one of the upscale, semi-private courses that UCF has unlimited access to for practi cing and playing. The front nine is a modern layout and the back nine features more of a classic style.

Located just minutes away from campus, the Twin Rivers Golf Club is the home of the UCF Practi ce Facility, which was completed in 2009. The Knights have ample opportunity to play on the picturesque course. Not far south of campus is Stoneybrook East, a course which will test golfers with an abundance of water hazards.

The Knights and many of the nati on’s premier women’s golf teams love playing in the UCF Challenge at the RedTail Golf Club. In additi on to the UCF Challenge, the Sorrento course has also served as home to the 2009 and 2010 men’s Conference USA Championship and also hosted men’s NCAA Regional play in 2009.

The Rio Pinar Country Club (left ) is another course for the Knights. The course previously served as the host site for the PGA TOUR’s Citrus Open. The country club is the home of the Rio Pinar Invitati onal.

One of the biggest advantages of playing for UCF is the access to many of the country’s top golf courses located right here in Orlando. That includes the Lake Nona Golf and Country Club (left ) and the Isleworth Golf Club (above). Minutes from UCF’s brand new medical school, the Lake Nona community is home to Ernie Els, Annika Sorenstam, Ben Curti s, Sergio Garcia, Reti ef Goosen and many other prominent players. Lake Nona’s annual cross-town challenge for the Tavistock Cup against Isleworth is broadcast nati onally. Isleworth residents include Tiger Woods, Mark O’Meara, Stuart Appleby and Paula Creamer.

UCF PRACTICE FACILITYMembers of the UCF men’s and women’s golf teams have the opportunity to enhance their games close to campus at the UCF Practi ce Facility. Located at the Twin Rivers Golf Club in nearby Oviedo, the facility was completed in 2009.

Constructi on on the 2,880-square foot teaching building at the locati on concluded in 2009. The building features hitti ng bays and a state-of-the-art video system to analyze each player’s swing. Also, the structure houses a player’s lounge, locker room and offi ces for the UCF coaching staff .

The facility is used exclusively by the UCF men’s and women’s golf programs.

The practi ce facility includes a six-acre short-game area, in additi on to a driving range. The short-game area has a pair of putti ng greens and target greens. The area was designed and constructed by McCumber Golf, which was founded by former PGA TOUR player Mark McCumber. Constructi on began in March 2007. Twin Rivers is managed by The Golf Group, an Orlando-based company that operates six courses in the area.

MORE THAN JUST GOLFCollege golf is about competi ti on and academics but camaraderie with your teammates is also a big part of the experience. The memories made at UCF last a lifeti me and they don’t all come on the golf course. Whether it is a team Halloween costume contest or a funny episode at a team dinner while on the road for a tournament, playing for the Knights is memorable.

Section 1.indd 8 2/5/2010 10:27:46 AM

ENJOYING THE RIDE TOWARDS THE TOPThe Knights also had a good ti me on the links in the team’s fi rst fall season under new head coach Courtney Trimble. UCF fi nished in the top three in two events. Individually, the Knights had six top-10 fi nishes with four diff erent Knights placing in the top-10 of at least one event. UCF also competed in the presti gious Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championships in Daytona Beach where the Knights were part of a 16-team fi eld that in-cluded 15 teams that were either ranked or received votes in the preseason top-25 poll.

UCF was second as a team at Kentucky’s Betti e Lou Evans Fall Invitati onal (left ). Freshman Valenti na Fontaine carded a 69-71-71=211 (-5) to place second at the FIU/Pat Bradley Invitati onal in Fort Myers (below).

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCEIn additi on to excelling on the course, women’s golfers at UCF are also succeeding in the classroom where the team’s combined cumulati ve GPA is well over a 3.0. UCF’s lone senior, Victoria Tomko, is on schedule to graduate this spring while junior Kati e Detlefsen, remarkably, had all ready earned her bachelor’s degree.

UCF student-athletes are supported by a nine-person professional staff of advisors and program coordinators from the Offi ce of Academic Services for Student-Athletes (ASSA). The ASSA mission is to support student-athletes’ academic development while exceeding sati sfactory progress toward their degrees.

ASSA advisors coordinate tutoring, mentoring, study sessions, and priority class regis-trati on for all current student-athletes and assist new Knights through the recruitment process. UCF student-athletes receive specifi c academic and athleti c informati on at ori-entati on as well as study skills and ti me management instructi on through out the year. More than 50 computers are available for student-athlete’s use anyti me during the aca-demic year.

During the 2008-09 academic year, UCF placed a league-record 224 student-athletes on the conference academic honor roll.

Graduati ng in two years with a 4.0 GPA, Kati e Detlefsen was an ob-vious choice for the Conference USA All-Academic Team and also a member of the NGCA All-American Scholar Team.

The UCF women’s golf team takes full advantage of ASSA’s expert academic support. Four out of six members of the team were named to the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll, just a part of UCF’s league-record 224 student-athletes on that list.

KEITH R. TRIBBLE • DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

TThe thread that has bridged together nearly three decades working in and around the collegiate community has been Keith Tribble’s history of building programs with strong foundati ons and

dynamic structure.

Since his start as Director of Athleti cs and Executi ve Vice President for the University of Central Florida Athleti cs Associati on on June 6, 2006, Tribble has quickly taken hold of the program’s blueprints and promised to lead with a principle that everyone associated with the program will also share - to “fi nish.”

In additi on, the other focal point of his concentrati on is the oversight of the constructi on, expansion and completi on of the noted UCF Athleti cs Faciliti es Master Plan. When fi nished, the plan will touch all areas of the student-athletes’ well-being, including residenti al housing, academic and mentoring support faciliti es and state-of-the-art performance venues where UCF fans and supporters can cheer on the Knights. To date, Tribble has overseen $150 million in new constructi on and improvements to UCF athleti c faciliti es since his arrival.

Through a renewed commitment, Tribble has been most proud of the record academic achievement of the UCF student-athletes during his fi rst two years in Orlando. The Knights, for the third straight year in 2008-09, placed the highest number of student-athletes on the Conference USA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll with 224 representati ves maintaining a 3.0 grade-point average or bett er.

Much of UCF Athleti cs went from transiti oning into Conference USA to competi ng for its ti tles in just a few short years. The football program has played for two

C-USA ti tles since 2005, winning the championship and coveted AutoZone Liberty Bowl berth in 2007. In 2007-08, other programs such as women’s soccer and soft ball, and members of women’s track and fi eld, claimed C-USA ti tles. In 2008-09, men’s golf reigned over the league, in additi on to a big Conference USA Tournament championship from women’s basketball. Over half of the programs have competed in NCAA postseason tournaments the past three years.

Successful student-athletes start with top-notch coaching and at UCF the commitment to coaching excellence has been evident. Among Tribble’s transacti ons so far has been the renewal of several successful veteran coaches, including Amanda Cromwell (women’s soccer), Renee Luers-Gillispie (soft ball), George O’Leary (football) and Kirk Speraw (men’s basketball).

Additi onally, Tribble was instrumental in the hiring of several new head coaches, including Becky Cramer (women’s rowing) Bryan Cunningham (men’s soccer), Todd Dagenais (women’s volleyball), Stephanie Nickitas (women’s tennis), Terry Rooney (baseball), Caryl Smith-Gilbert (women’s track and fi eld/cross country), Courtney Trimble (women’s golf), Bryce Wallor (men’s golf) and Joi Williams (women’s basketball).

Tribble att ended the University of Florida where he played off ensive guard for three bowl teams. He graduated in 1977 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism (public relati ons and marketi ng). Tribble and his wife, Terri, have a daughter, Carlyn, and a son, Kyle.

Keith Tribble is committ ed to the concept of the well-rounded student-athlete, emphasizing the importance of their academic prowess off the fi eld as well as championship results on.

From Bright House Networks Stadium to the UCF Arena, UCF student-athletes play and train in top-notch venues. The school’s always growing and improving athleti cs complex is part of UCF’s commitment to provide student-athletes with excepti onal and modern facili-ti es. In the past few years, this commitment has assured that the UCF athleti cs faciliti es are not only among the best in Conference USA, but across the nati on.

The 45,000-seat Bright House Networks Stadium, the home of the UCF program, shared its debut season on campus in 2007 with another brand new facility - UCF Arena. Home to the Knights’ men’s and women’s basketball programs, the 10,000-seat venue also opened in the fall of 2007. The arena, which also hosts concerts and UCF commencement ceremo-nies, includes luxury boxes and suites, open concourse areas and numerous concession opti ons.

Other faciliti es that have seen upgrades in recent years are Jay Bergman Field – home to the baseball program - and The Venue at UCF, the renovated previous arena which now houses exclusive modern practi ce faciliti es and offi ces for the men’s and women’s basket-ball programs, as well as an equally-spacious home facility for volleyball. Off campus, two new faciliti es opened in 2009 - the UCF Intercollegiate Rowing Center and the UCF Golf Practi ce Facility.

UCF’s Faciliti es Master Plan includes numerous facility enhancements in the coming years, including the planned constructi on of a new stadium and entrance structure at the UCF Soccer and Track and the expansion of Jay Bergman Field. The vision for a new academic services center is imminent, one which will provide student-athletes greater access to resources near their new Athleti cs Village residences, and further assist their progress towards their degrees and post-graduate success.

When UCF Athleti cs completes its Faciliti es Master Plan during the next decade, every sport and every student-athlete will have received the benefi t of an improved facility to practi ce, train and compete for championships in.

WELCOME TO ORLANDO

One of the area’s biggest att racti ons is its year-round mild weather. At the heart of the Sunshine State, the region’s average annual temperature is a comfortable 72.4 degrees.

UCF students have easy access to one of the world’s most vibrant citi es – Orlando. Looking for theme parks, att racti ons, museums, world-class shopping, great restaurants, golf courses, jogging trails and nature pre-serves? You can fi nd it all here in Orlando.

Orlando is one of the most popular vacati on desti nati ons in the world. In 2007, 48.8 million visitors trav-eled to the region. Walt Disney World, Universal Studios Orlando and Sea World are just a short drive away from the UCF campus. The Kennedy Space Center, state parks and sandy beaches off the coast of the Atlanti c Ocean are also all nearby.

Orlando is a frequent desti nati on for today’s top nati onal musical acts, who visit popu-lar venues like Hard Rock Live at Universal’s CityWalk and House of Blues, which is located at Downtown Disney. The city’s world-renowned theme parks have added a variety of new entertainment experiences, including Disney’s Cirque de Soleil and Uni-versal’s Blue Man Group performances.

Beyond the theme parks, downtown Orlando features an ever-changing skyline, fi ne dining opti ons and a newly developed arts district. Cultural desti nati ons in the city include the Orlando Museum of Art, the Orange County Regional History Center and Lake Eola Park.

ORLANDO SPORTING OPTIONSWith top-notch events occurring year round, Orlando is a premier desti nati on for sports fans. The region is home to professional franchises, college football bowl games, world-famous auto races, several professional golf tournaments and much more.

The Orlando Magic of the Nati onal Basketball Associati on brought excitement to the city last season with a tremendous run to the NBA Finals. The Magic will open the 2010-11 season in a new arena in downtown Oralndo.

The region’s sports calendar is busy with baseball each spring as Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex hosts the Atlanta Braves for Major League Baseball spring training. The Houston Astros train in nearby Kissimmee and the Washington Nati onals prepare for the regular season close to UCF in Viera.

The Florida Citrus Bowl, the former home of UCF football, hosts a pair of college bowl games each winter - the Champs Sports Bowl and the CapitalOne Bowl. The stadium has also been the site of World Cup and Olympic soccer contests. In 2006, the World Baseball Classic held part of its inaugural event in Orlando.

In additi on to UCF athleti cs events, the region also fea-tures the most prominent NASCAR race, the Daytona 500. Several other NASCAR races, PGA Tour golf tournaments and numerous acti on sports championships are also held in Central Florida.

The UCF women’s golf team has made two-consecuti ve NCAA Regional appearances and, aft er a strong fall where the Knights had a pair of top-three fi nishes, a return trip is not out of the questi on as UCF heads into its fi rst spring under new head coach Courtney Trimble. Trimble, who came to UCF over the summer aft er a successful career at Auburn, brought in a seasoned assistant in Mary Bryan, the program’s fi rst director of operati ons in Charlott e Campbell, and immediately set to work on improving the Knights. Helping the Knights along is their brand new practi ce facility, just minutes from campus at the Twin Rivers Golf Course in Oviedo. The team’s home gives the Knights access to a private driv-ing range, putti ng greens and short game area in additi on to a pair of video swing analyzers for the UCF men’s and women’s teams. “It’s a really exciti ng ti me to be here,” Trimble said. “The new facility is awesome. You can get bett er there, and that’s what I’m so excited about. It’s three miles from campus. You can go there anyti me and it’s just for the team. It’s a perfect practi ce facility for college golf as far as the build-ing itself and the practi ce areas, the chipping and putti ng greens, are excellent. You can get your short game incredibly good. We’ve seen the ben-efi ts already.” UCF brings back three players from the 2008-09 season, led by senior Victoria Tomko. The na-ti ve Belgian had by far a career-best 76.89 stroke average this fall, down from 80.38 last year. Her fall was highlighted by a third-place fi nish at Ken-tucky’s Betti e Lou Evans Fall Invitati onal, the fi rst top-fi ve placement of her career. One of the top student-athletes that UCF has ever had, Kati e Detlefsen is back for her junior year. Already into her second semester of mas-ter’s degree work with a 4.0 cumulati ve GPA, her stroke average was just as impressive this past fall where her 76.67 was exactly two and a half strokes bett er than her 79.17 clip from 2008-09. Detlefsen fi red the fi rst two even par rounds of her career during the fall and her 218 (+2) show-ing at the FIU/Pat Bradley Invitati onal is ti ed for

the fi ft h-best 54-hole performance in school his-tory, matching LPGA professional Liz Earley’s ca-reer-best mark while at UCF. Elisa Aoki joined the Knights in ti me for the spring semester last year and an up-and-down freshman campaign. She fi nished her fi rst fall strong though, ranking amongst UCF’s top-three fi nishers in each of the fi nal three events, topped by her fi ft h-place eff ort at the Betti e Lou Evans Fall Invitati onal. Aoki led the Knights with three top-20 fi nishes in the fall, including a pair of top-10 placements, and hopes to carry that momen-tum into the spring. UCF has four freshmen from four diff erent countries rounding out the lineup who could ulti mately decide the postseason hopes of the team. Chilean Nati onal Team member Valenti na Fontaine came to Orlando and made an instant impact. Her 211 (-5) at the FIU/Pat Bradley Invi-tati onal established a school record for a 54-hole

event on a par-72 course. Her 69-71-71 string also earned her Conference USA’s Women’s Golfer of the Week award. Fontaine’s 74.56 stroke average from the fall was two full strokes bett er than her closest teammate and she led the Knights with four par-or-bett er rounds. German freshman Carolin Pinegger also played in all four fall events and recorded a solid 78.11 average in her fi rst collegiate semester of acti on. Pinegger proved to be tough at the Hooters Colle-giate Match Play Championship, recording a 1-1-1 record. Sammy Vass, a nati ve of Scotland, played in three fall events as an individual to gain expe-rience and showed improvement with her best event being the team’s season fi nale at the FIU/Pat Bradley Invitati onal in Fort Myers. Pensacola’s Sunny Harris rounds out the freshman, joining the Knights as a walk-on but not competi ng during the fall season. The spring schedule will off er UCF both a glimpse at some of America’s top teams and also some events where the Knights will be amongst the favorites. UCF will head to LSU, Georgia and Florida for events while also playing host to the annual UCF Challenge at the RedTail Golf Club in Sorrento. The C-USA Championship will be hosted by Southern Miss this year. Last spring UCF placed second in the event behind only Tulane, its best fi nish since joining the league in 2005-06. With a good mix of veterans and freshmen and a new and energeti c coaching staff , the Knights have ample cause for opti mism heading into the spring with dreams of a third-straight NCAA Regional appearance in their collecti ve heads. A good February, March and April can put the Knights just where they’d like to be come May.

Immediately prior to UCF, Trimble spent three and a half years as an assistant coach at her alma mater, Auburn University, working under long-ti me Tigers head coach Kim Evans. The Ti-gers fi nished the 2008-09 season ranked eighth nati onally. Trimble also helped coach the Tigers to the 2006 and 2009 SEC Championships, four NCAA East Regional berths and three NCAA Championship appearances. The one-ti me All-American player helped mentor several other Tiger All-Americans, including fi rst-teamers Ma-ria Marti nez (2006), Cydney Clanton in 2008 and Candace Schepperle (2009), along with third-team pick Nicole Hage (2007) who also earned honorable menti on All-America accolades in 2006.

Trimble also worked with consecuti ve SEC Fresh-men of the Year in Schepperle (2007) and Clan-ton (2008). Clanton was also named the 2008 NGCA Nati onal Freshman of the Year.

Formerly Courtney Swaim, Trimble spent over two years on the Duramed FUTURES Tour, competi ng in 37 tournaments and posti ng four top-fi ve fi nishes. She qualifi ed for the 2004 U.S. Women’s Open and made the cut, fi nishing 61st.

Trimble played at Auburn from 1998-2002. Trimble’s senior season was the most success-ful in the program’s history as the 2001-02 team fi nished no worse than second in 12 tourna-ments, amassed fi ve victories and was nati onal runner-up at the NCAA Championships, the school’s best fi nish in the tournament.

Individually, Trimble is one of Auburn’s most decorated players. She played in 46 tourna-ments over the course of her career, more than any other Auburn golfer. She was an All-SEC se-lecti on in 1999 and 2001 and earned both All-SEC and All-America honors in 2002. Trimble was also a member of the 2002 victorious Curti s Cup team and played in the 2002 U.S. Women’s Open as an amateur.

A nati ve of Duluth, Ga., Trimble graduated from Auburn in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in business administrati on. She is married to Billy Trimble.

GETTING TO KNOW...COURTNEYCOURTNEY TRIMBLE

A proven winner who has experienced success at the collegiate level as both a coach and play-er, Courtney Trimble enters her fi rst season as UCF’s women’s golf coach.

It didn’t take long for UCF to see some of the im-provements that Trimble hopes to conti nue to bring. UCF fi nished in the top three in two out of its four tournaments during her fi rst fall in Orlando. Prior to this fall, UCF had just two top-three team fi nishes in the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons combined.

This fall, four diff erent Knights (Elisa Aoki, Ka-ti e Detlefsen, Valenti na Fontaine and Victoria Tomko) fi nished in the top 10 of at least one of the team’s fi nal three events with three of those placings being top-fi ve fi nishes. It is exactly how Trimble hoped things would happen - for a UCF team which has made NCAA Regionals each of the past two years to get even bett er.

“We are excited to name Courtney Trimble as UCF’s next women’s golf coach,” UCF Director of Athleti cs Keith Tribble said of her hiring. “Court-ney has seen the top of the collegiate golf world at Auburn and will be able to uti lize our new golf facility, the tremendous Orlando golf com-munity and this great University to get us to the top. We look forward to building on our NCAA Regional appearances the past two seasons and become a consistent nati onally-recognized pro-gram.”

“I am very excited to have this opportunity to be the head coach at UCF,” Trimble said. “UCF has the foundati on in place to be not only a suc-cessful program, but also to compete for a na-ti onal championship. The combinati on of a fi ne University and its proximity to world class golf makes UCF a recipe for success both on and off of the golf course. Having the school’s new prac-ti ce facility so close to campus is another great benefi t for our student-athletes. I am grateful to have this opportunity.”

Bryan played full-ti me on the LPGA Tour for 13 seasons from 1971-84 and has also played in LPGA Senior Tour events.

She att ended Eastern New Mexico in Portales where she earned a sociology degree in 1971. Bryan was the runner-up at the New Mexico State Amateur in 1968 while in college. The fol-lowing year she won the state ti tle back in her nati ve Michigan.

Bryan has been a fi xture on the broadcasti ng scene with over 300 nati onal broadcasts on ESPN, CBS, NBC, ABC, The Golf Channel and also the PGA Radio Network. Her broadcasti ng career also includes the NCAA Championships.

Bryan was the fi rst woman to ever broadcast a men’s major PGA Tour event when the PGA Championship came to the Riviera Country Club in Pacifi c Palisades, Calif.

Most recently, Bryan taught the great game of golf as an instructor at the Grand Cypress Acad-emy of Golf in Orlando. The Academy has been rated amongst the top 25 golf schools in Ameri-ca annually since 1999.

“Not everybody who can play can teach,” said Fred Griffi n, director of the academy and him-self considered one of the top teachers of the game in America. “Real skill and talent are re-quired to work eff ecti vely with someone who is just learning the game or wanti ng to improve. Mary has that ability.”

Now the Knights are able to benefi t from that ability each and every day.

MARY BRYAN

It’s hard to imagine that the Knights, or any school, could ever have a more perfectly quali-fi ed assistant coach than Mary Bryan.

Bryan brings a resume to UCF on a full-ti me ba-sis that includes LPGA Tour playing experience, an ESPN and CBS broadcasti ng career, and top-level instructi onal background at some of Orlan-do - and the country’s - fi nest golf academies. Packaged in an enthusiasti c and energeti c per-son and the Knights have an ideal coaching staff member.

“Mary brings years of experience in the whole golf industry,” UCF head coach Courtney Trim-ble said of Bryan. “She was a great player on the LPGA Tour. She’s been a commentator for ESPN and CBS for years and she’s also a very good teacher. She brings a lot of knowledge and years of great experience on and off of the golf course. She will help the team in a lot of ways. Her knowledge will really help the team develop their golf games. Off the course she has incred-ible positi ve energy and she knows a lot of the many golf courses in Orlando.”

HISTORYGolf success at UCF has been characterized by a long list of individual accomplishments as well as team success in recent years. In additi on to Liz Earley’s two appearances in the NCAA Finals, she was one of three women from UCF to compete in the 1993 U.S. Open. She was again invited to compete for the United States against Japan in the summer of 1996. Presently, the Knights have made two-consecuti ve NCAA Regional appearances, bring-ing the all-ti me total to eight.
