Trailing.first-place.UTEP.by.30.points.more.than.halfway.through.the.final.day.of.competition.and.sitting.in.sixth.place,.the.Knights.began.to.make.a.move.up.the.leader.board..On.the.strength.of.43.points.from.its.hurdlers,.UCF.moved.into.first.place.with.just.five.events.remaining.

With.the.home.crowd.behind.them,.the.Knights.were.able.to.hold.off.surging.UTEP.to.win.their.first-ever.C-USA.crown..In.doing.so,.UCF.posted.a.program.conference-best.114.points.in.capturing.its.first.league.title.since.2004.(A-Sun).

Now,.the.Knights.are.faced.with.the.daunting.task.of.returning.to.the.top.of.the.mountain.in.2011..With.the.return.of.C-USA.Coach.of.the.Year.Caryl.Smith.Gilbert.and.the.program’s.first-ever.USTFCCCA.All-American.in.junior.hurdler/sprinter.Jackie.Coward,.remaining.at.the.top.is.a.strong.possibility.for.the.near.future.

A.good.mix.of.youth.and.veteran.leadership.will.have.the.Knights.in.the.thick.of.competition.at.every.meet.this.season..Sophomore.Sonnisha.Williams.is.back.after.both.she.and.Coward.advanced.all.the.way.to.the.NCAA.Championships.a.year.ago..The.successes.of.Williams.and.Coward.are.examples.of.the.direction.UCF.is.headed.with.Smith.Gilbert.at.the.helm.of.the.program.in.2011.and.beyond.

Now in her fiourth season at the helm of the UCF track & field and cross country programs, Caryl Smith Gilbert has made it evident that her goal is to build a championship program. In 2010, that goal became a reality as she led her team to a Conference USA title.

In the spring of 2010, Smith Gilbert helped lead her team to a dramatic come-from behind finish to claim the program’s first-ever C-USA Championship in outdoor track. The Knights took the lead with three events remaining and held off a late-surge by UTEP to claim the conference title.

In a championship that had 21 total events, UCF athletes had 32 seperate season-best and 22 personal-best performances in the four-day meet.

One of Smith Gilbert’s runners during the 2010 season would go on to become the first NCAA Outdoor All-American. Jackie Coward finished fifth in the 100-meter hurdles in the NCAA Track & Field Championships at Historic Hayward Field at the University of Oregon.

The track and field program has risen at an intense rate. In 2009, in just her second season, UCF finished in second place at the C-USA Outdoor Championships and third at the C-USA Indoor Championships, the program’s highest finishes in either championship meet to date.

Under her tutelage, UCF sent a record five athletes to the NCAA Outdoor National Championships in 2009 and finished 35th at the NCAA Indoor Championships. The program also finished in ninth place at the NCAA Outdoor Regionals, its highest all-time finish.

The Knights also won the title and set a school record in the shuttle hurdles at the prestigious Penn Relays. The performance also gained the program the ACCUSPLIT/Nike Relay Award at the end of the season.

Individually, three Knights gained NCAA Indoor All-American distinctions in 2009 and four won C-USA individual event titles - two indoor and two outdoor.

In 2008, her first season in charge, it was obvious that Smith Gilbert had the program heading in the right direction.

The program finished third at the C-USA Outdoor Championships, broke 23 previous school records, had two C-USA event champions and one NCAA Indoor All-American.

In her two seasons at the helm of the program, her athletes have broken 30 of the school’s indoor and outdoor school records.

In August of 2009, Smith Gilbert served as the jumps and multi-events coach of Team USA at the 2009 IAAF World Outdoor Championships in Berlin, Germany.

She has also overseen the building of the UCF Cross Country Complex, giving the program an on-campus course to recruit to, host home meets and train on both in and out of season.

The cross country team has already seen a positive impact from this, winning four events over the past two seasons.

She took the helm of the UCF programs in the summer of 2007, and she brought with her extensive experience at the highest level of collegiate competition and a proven ability to transform her student-athletes into champions.

Smith Gilbert came to UCF after five seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Tennessee, where she was responsible for coaching sprints, hurdles and jumps. During her tenure with the Lady Vols, her athletes won three NCAA titles and seven Southeastern Conference championships and earned 53 NCAA Division I All-America honors. They also established 19 school records.

In 2005, Smith Gilbert was named U.S. Track Coaches Association National and Mideast Region Assistant Coach of the Year for sprints and hurdles.

Smith Gilbert was responsible for the development of Dee Dee Trotter, the 2007 USA Indoor and Outdoor Champion and a 2004 gold medalist in the 4x400-meter relay. She ranked among the top six in the world each of the past four years. She also coached Tianna Madison to the 2005 world championship in the long jump.

With a number of Smith Gilbert’s athletes playing pivotal roles, the Lady Vols won the school’s first NCAA Indoor Championship in 2005. That year, her group combined for 24 All-America honors and seven school records.

As a member of the Lady Vols’ staff, Smith Gilbert was instrumental in the development of several world-class athletes. Cleo Tyson won the 100-meter dash and helped the U.S. 4x100 relay team earn gold at the North America, Central America and Caribbean Athletic Association (NACAC) Championships. She also mentored Toyin Olupona, the 2005 Canadian National Champion in the 100-meter dash and the two-time NCAA runner-up in the 60-meter dash.

In addition to contributing to UT’s NCAA Indoor title in 2005, Smith Gilbert’s charges helped the Lady Vols win SEC Indoor Championships in 2005 and 2007 and an NCAA Mideast Regional outdoor crown in 2005. The Lady Vols also posted top-four finishes at the 2004, 2005 and 2007 NCAA Indoor Championships.

Prior to her appointment at Tennessee in 2002, Smith Gilbert was an assistant coach at the University of Alabama, where she spent three years guiding athletes in the sprints, hurdles and jumps. During her tenure with the Crimson Tide, she produced seven NCAA Division I All-Americans and four USA Olympic Trials qualifiers.

Smith Gilbert previously held similar responsibilities as an assistant at Penn State from 1997-99. While in Happy Valley, her results included athletes who accumulated four All-America honors and nine school records, and made the finals at the Big Ten Championships on 10 occasions. She also served the school as an instructor for the exercise science department.

HEAD COACH Caryl Smith Gilbert

Prior to becoming a collegiate coach, Smith Gilbert was the head coach from 1994-97 at her prep alma mater, George Washington High School in Denver. During her tenure, her program produced two state titles and three All-America selections. Under her tutelage, five of her athletes accepted full scholarships to NCAA Division I schools.

In addition to her experience at the high school and collegiate levels, Smith Gilbert was an assistant with Team USA during the NACAC Championships and was invited to coach the sprints at the 2005 Pan Am Junior Championships. She also was selected as an assistant coach for the 2007 World Championships in Osaka, Japan.

A former indoor national record holder in the 55- and 60-meter dashes, Smith Gilbert was a two-time Colorado state champion in the 200-meter dash and long jump and a three-time state champion in the 100-meter dash as a prep standout. She set state records in each of those three events and went on to become a three-time All-American at UCLA, where she was a Pacific 10 Conference champion in the 100-meter dash, 4x100-meter relay and 4x400-meter relay. She was part of an NCAA Championship runner-up 4x400-meter squad and was an All-American in the 4x100-meter relay in 1988 and 1989.

A 1991 graduate of UCLA, Smith Gilbert holds a bachelor’s degree in film and television production. She also holds master’s degrees in sport management and sport psychology from Tennessee. She is a 2006 USATF Level III Coaches Education Clinician.

She is married to former NFL linebacker Greg Gilbert. Their family includes sons Alex, Spencer and Osiris.

Jeff Chakouian was hired as an assistant coach with the UCF track & field program on July 6, 2009, and is in his second season in 2010-11.

In his first season at UCF, Chakouian helped lead the Knights to the first C-USA Championship in program history. The Knights entered the final day of competition sixth before mounting a comeback that would land them at the top of the podium on their home track as the 2010 C-USA Outdoor Track & Field Champions.

Under Chakouian, Lakendra Thames set four school records in 2010. Thames set new UCF records in the indoor shot and weight, while also setting marks in outdoor shot and discus. Her throws in those events were also All-Conference USA Performances.

Chakouian will be responsible for working with the throwers at UCF. He also serves as both the recruiting coordinator and the camps coordinator.

Prior to his time at UCF, Chakouian spent the previous three seasons at Illinois State University.

During his three-year tenure at Illinois State, Chakouian coached a pair of Missouri Valley Conference champions as well as 10 NCAA Division I Outdoor Regional participants and 13 all-conference performers.

Prior to his stint at Illinois State, Chakouian served as a volunteer assistant coach at both Kentucky and Brown. While at Kentucky in 2006, he helped coach one Southeastern Conference champion and four all-conference standouts. Serving in the same position at Brown from August 2005-March 2006, he coached one Ivy League champion and two all-conference performers.

Chakouian amassed an impressive resume of national and international competitive experience. A native of Seekonk, Mass., Chakouian was a six-time All-American in the shot put while a member of the track and field team at Kentucky. Chakouian, who received his undergraduate degree in education kinesiology and health promotions from Kentucky in May 2005, was a five-time SEC champion, an eight-time All-SEC selection in the shot put and was a team captain for three seasons.

Chakouian has competed in numerous international competitions in over a dozen countries. He finished fifth at the Junior World Championships (Santiago, Chile) in 2000 and first at the Junior Pan American Games (Sante Fe, Argentina) in 2001 while also being ranked No. 6 on the Jr. World Shot Put List.

Paul Brown enters his first season with the UCF track & field and cross country programs after joining the Knights’ coaching staff in the summer of 2010.

Brown comes to UCF after five years as an assistant track and cross country coach at Oak Ridge High School in Orlando. During his time at Oak Ridge, Brown assisted with the girls cross country team as it qualified for three consecutive 3A-State Championships (2007-2009), while helping to lead the girls track team to the 2007 and 2008 3A-State title. He also was a part of four consecutive regional championships, four consecutive district championships and four consecutive Metro Conference Championships.

Prior to joining the Knights’ staff, Brown has coached nine athletes to 24 top-eight finishes at the 2007-2010 Class 3A-State Championships. Brown’s athletes have garnered 13 All-America honors. In 2007 and 2010, his long jumper (Odeika Bent) and his triple jumper (Juna Esperance) won the Class 3A-State titles, respectively. Esperance was ranked in the Top 30 nationally among all triple jumpers.

A former University of Florida runner, Brown was a Junior All-American in 1999. Running in the 110-meter hurdles, he served as a sprints captain from 2001-03. Brown qualified for the National Championships in 2003 in his final season in Gainesville, while earning his B.A. in English.

Brown will serve as the primary coach for cross country and middle and long distance runners as well as jumpers during the track & field seasons.

Graduate ASSISTANT LaTonya LocheLaTonya Loche is in her third season as a graduate assistant at UCF.

Loche came to UCF after finishing a stellar career at Tennessee in 2008. While a student-athlete on the UT track and field team, Loche put herself in the record books on numerous occasions. She left as a 12-time All-American and four of the relay teams she participated on were school record holders upon her graduation.

Loche was born and raised in Bastrop, La., where she was a three-year member of the track and field team at Bastrop High School. While in high school, she claimed six individual Louisiana 4A state titles, including three in the 100-meter dash.

She graduated from Tennessee in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and criminal justice. Loche is currently pursuing her master’s degree in criminal justice from UCF.

UCF Atheletics and Track & Field SUPPORT STAFF

Keith Tribble Director of AthleticsUpon his hiring on June 6, 2006, Keith Tribble publicly shared his two core goals in taking the Director of Athletics position with the University of Central Florida - “To graduate our student-athletes and compete for championships”. Since that day, everything UCF has planned and accomplished over the last four years has fit within that mission.

Over three decades working in and around the collegiate community the consistency in Tribble’s background is his ability to build programs with strong foundations and dynamic infrastructure. Tribble, one of only seven African-American Director of Athletics in the Football Bowl Subdivision, has quickly taken hold of the burgeoning UCF athletics program’s blueprints and promised to lead with the two key principles that everyone associated with the program will also share.

Jessica ReoSenior Associate AD/SWA Track AdministratorJessica Reo was promoted to senior associate athletics director for student services in July of 2008. Along with other sports, she serves as the administrator for track and field.

Prior to coming to UCF, she spent seven years at the University of Miami.

Reo graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English from Florida State in 1993. She has worked in the media relations field for Florida State, the Atlantic Coast Conference and Miami.

Eric Coleman Coordinator of Academic Advising Services II Eric joined the Academic Services for Student Athletes staff as the Coordinator of Academic Advising Services in January 2009. He is currently the lead advisor for softball, woman’s track & field, and Cross Country, and oversees all aspects of ASSA Tutoring Services.

Prior to joining the ASSA staff, Eric spent one year at The University of Akron as the Coordinator of CHAMPS/ Life Skills and Tutoring Services. He also served as Coordinator of Multicultural Recruitment at Gustavus Adolphus College, Director of the Intercultural Student Center and Resident Director/Advisor for the McNair Scholars Program at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Scott Sinclair Assistant Director of Strength and Conditioning Scott Sinclair is in his seventh year at UCF as an assistant director of strength and conditioning. He works with the football program while also training the track and field program.

Sinclair came to UCF after working as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Georgia Tech from 2001-03. While with the Yellow Jackets,

Sinclair worked as the director of player development for Georgia Tech’s football squad. Prior to Georgia Tech, he served as an assistant at Wake Forest from 1999-01.

Ed Woodley Assistant Athletic Trainer Ed Woodley is in his second year at UCF after serving the previous two years as a graduate assistant at Southern Miss. Woodley was an intern with the Jacksonville Jaguars in the summer of 2008.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise science with an emphasis in athletic training

in 2004. Woodley also worked a semester with the United States Air Force Academy as a student athletic trainer.

UCF Track & field complexBuilt in 1991, the UCF Track & Field Complex serves as the home to all home track and field meets as well as men’s and women’s soccer games. The Knights also use the facility as the site of all of their practices. The complex features an eight-lane, 400-meter track that was resurfaced during the summer of 2004. The facility includes throwing areas for the hammer, discus and shot put, as well as recently improved long and triple jump pits.

The complex features bleacher seating with a capacity for 500 fans and numerous other spectator areas. In 2006, the bleachers were upgraded to feature more comfortable chairback seating. This season, the Knights hosted three meets at the facility which served as warmups to this weekend’s prestigious event, including the Black & Gold Challenge, the UCF Invitational and the UCF Twilight.

Renovations on the complex got underway in the summer of 2010. These renderings display plans to include a new section of bleachers which will provide expanded seating, a press box and a building to house concessions and restroom facilities.

The UCF Track & Field Complex is nestled between the 45,000-seat Bright House Networks Stadium and the 10,000-seat UCF Arena, which both opened in 2007 and house the Knights’ football and basketball programs, respectively.

TOWERS AT KNIGHTS PLAZA

Many members of the UCF track & field team reside on campus at the Towers at Knights Plaza. The new apartments on the north side of campus allow the student-athletes to live across the street from the UCF Arena, the UCF Practice Facility and Knightro’s cafeteria. The apartments feature single bedrooms with full-size beds, kitchens and living room areas. Each bedroom includes high-speed Internet access, cable television and local phone service. The Towers at Knights Plaza are also located near Bright House Networks Stadium, the Wayne Densch Sports Center and Nicholson Fieldhouse. The apartments are located above retail shops and restaurants, including Barnes and Noble and Tailgaters restaurant.

UCF DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS KEITH R. TRIBBLEUpon his hiring on June 6, 2006, Keith Tribble publicly shared his two core goals in taking the director of athletics position with the University of Central Florida – to graduate student-athletes and compete for championships. Since that day, everything UCF has planned and accomplished has fit within that mission.

In over three decades working in and around the collegiate community, the consistency in Tribble’s background is his ability to build programs with strong foundations and dynamic infrastructure. Tribble, one of only seven African-American directors of athletics in the Football Bowl Subdivision, has quickly taken hold of the burgeoning UCF Athletics program’s blueprints and promised to lead with the two key principles that everyone associated with the program will also share. Most importantly, Tribble is committed to the concept of the well-rounded student-athlete, emphasizing the importance of their academic prowess off the field as well as championship results on.

In addition, the other focal point of his concentration is the oversight of the construction, expansion and completion of the UCF Athletics Facilities Master Plan. When finished in 2020, the plan will have touched every-single area of the student-athletes’ well-being, including residential housing, academic and mentoring support facilities and state-of-the-art performance venues where UCF fans and supporters can cheer on the Knights. To date, Tribble has overseen $150 million in new construction and improvements to UCF athletic facilities since his arrival, and was recently approved to move forward with a $70 million facility development plan that will complete the UCF Athletics quadrant on campus.

Through a renewed commitment, Tribble has been most proud of the record academic achievement of UCF student-athletes during his time in Orlando. The Knights, for the fourth-straight year in 2009-10, led all public institutions in Conference USA with the highest number of student-athletes on the C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll with 221 representatives maintaining a 3.0 grade-point average or better. UCF’s 221 honorees represented approximately 60 percent of the school’s total student-athletes. For three-straight years, through 2009, UCF student-athletes had placed the highest number on the league honor roll for all schools, public or private.

UCF Athletics can now compete for C-USA championships in all sports, and has been progressing in this direction under Tribble since his first year at UCF. In recent years, the football program has played for two C-USA titles, winning in 2007. That same year, women’s soccer and softball and members of the women’s track and field squad first claimed C-USA titles. In 2008-09, C-USA Coach of the Year Joi Williams led a young women’s basketball program to a memorable conference championship and NCAA Tournament invitation.

Men’s golf won its first C-USA championship, while finishing among the top-10 teams nationally in 2009 and followed up in 2010 with another C-USA team title. Women’s track and field earned the school’s latest league title with a memorable finish at the 2010 C-USA Championship, helping Caryl Smith Gilbert earn conference coach of the year honors. Women’s soccer was ranked as high as No. 8 in the nation in 2009 and made its third-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance behind C-USA Coach of the Year Amanda Cromwell. In all, UCF Athletics has or will be competing in NCAA postseason tournaments in all of its programs in the coming seasons.

Tribble arrived at UCF following 13 years as the chief executive officer of the south Florida-based Orange Bowl Committee, where he was an integral part of reshaping the collegiate football bowl system into an acclaimed industry.

Tribble attended the University of Florida where he played offensive guard for three bowl teams. He graduated in 1977 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism (public relations and marketing). Tribble and his wife, Terri, have a daughter, Carlyn, and a son, Kyle.

Orlando is one of the most popular vacation destinations in the world. In 2009, nearly 50 million visitors traveled to the region. Walt Disney World, Universal Studios Orlando and Sea World are just a short drive away from the UCF campus. The Kennedy Space Center, state parks and sandy beaches off the coast of the Atlantic Ocean are also all nearby. Orlando is a frequent destination for today’s top musical acts, who visit popular venues like Hard Rock Live at Universal’s CityWalk and House of Blues, which is located at Downtown Disney. The city’s world-renowned theme parks have added a variety of new entertainment experiences, including Disney’s Cirque de Soleil and Universal’s Blue Man Group performances. Beyond the theme parks, downtown Orlando features an ever-changing skyline, fine dining options and a newly developed arts district.

With top-notch events occuring year round, Orlando is a premier destination for sports fans. The region is home to professional franchises, college football bowl games, world-famous auto races and several professional golf tournaments. The Orlando Magic of the National Basketball Association play in downtown Orlando at the new Amway Center. The region’s sports calendar is busy each spring as Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex hosts the Atlanta Braves for Major League Baseball spring training. The Houston Astros train in nearby Kissimmee and the Washington Nationals prepare for the regular season in Viera. The Florida Citrus Bowl hosts a pair of college bowl games each winter. Other events in the area include the Daytona 500 and PGA Tour tournaments.
