The UCF rowing team is ready to start the 2010 season with new changes. The veterans and the newcomers will take on top teams they have never competed against with a chance to win a conference championship.

Conference USA will sponsor women’s rowing as a sport beginning this year, which means the Knights will compete in their fi rst Conference USA Championship in May. This year, the results of the championship will be determined by the fi nal results of the South/Central Regional Row-ing Championships, but the league will conduct its own regatt a beginning in 2011.

The Knights are coming off a winning season in 2009, where they swept Duke at the inaugural home regatt a at the UCF Intercollegiate Rowing Center and also defeated teams such as Iowa, Kansas State and Texas. Becky Cramer will re-turn as head coach of the Black and Gold for her second season.

“We are a smaller team this season but that means that each person is that much more important and rowers have risen to that chal-lenge,” Cramer said. “As a team, we are pushing each other and holding each member account-able and it is raising the bar for everyone. We have a strong and talented group and everyone has an opportunity to make an impact.”

Cramer led her squad to 26 victories during the 2009 season and led the team to a third-place fi nish in the South Region and 10th place honors overall at the South/Central Rowing Champion-ships. Cramer also had two student-athletes, Chelsey Lauzon and Elizabeth Robinson, named to CRCA All-Region Teams. Lauzon, Christi na Bechtold and Samantha Sarff were also invited to women’s nati onal team camps.

In all, 14 women earned Conference USA Com-missioner’s Academic Medals with GPAs of 3.75 and higher and 56 were placed on the C-USA Commissioner’s honor roll with 3.0 GPAs and higher during Cramer’s fi rst season.

A new assistant coach, Joel Furtek, has been added to the staff as the novice coach. Furtek comes with a wealth of experience, as the head rowing coach for the University of North Caro-lina at Chapel Hill and the head novice coach at the University of Virginia. He also served as a rigger/boatman for the University of Miami in 2009, taking charge in the middle of the season when the head coach resigned.

“Joel has brought a lot of energy and excite-ment. He has a deep knowledge base with a lot of experience, which has helped the coaching dynamic,” Cramer said of Furtek.

Susan Cohen, who served as the novice coach for the 2009 season, is now the recruiti ng coor-dinator and varsity assistant for the Knights. The novice squad placed fi rst overall in the season-opening Metro Cup in 2009 and third overall at the South/Central Regional Championships un-der Cohen’s directi on.

The 2010 schedule is tough for the Knights, as they will race against nati onally ranked teams, No. 17 Iowa and No. 18 Louisville, as well as Mi-ami and will host Alabama.

“The tools to success in my opinion are incor-porati ng the excitement, the fi re and the drive. I want the team to not only be excited about racing, but also be excited about preparing to race,” Cramer said.

UCF Rowing Looks to Make a Statement at Inaugural Conference Championships

The Knights will conti nue to practi ce in the in-tercollegiate rowing complex, which opened in the spring of 2009. The facility consists of a traditi onal boathouse and team clubhouse with space for erg training and a locker room. The training has not been much diff erent from pre-vious seasons, focusing on communicati on and teamwork. Cramer and her staff have prepared the squad for the competi ti on by practi cing more in small boats and for longer distances.

“The dynamic of the team has changed a litt le. The freshmen from last year were integrated into the group so for the varsity there is not a huge transiti on. Everyone is on the same page,” Cramer said. “I expect them to build upon last year’s success because I think they have learned a lot.”

UCF will begin its journey to the C-USA Cham-pionships with the novice heading to the Metro Cup at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla., on March 6.

BECKY CRAMER

HEAD COACH • SECOND SEASON

Becky Cramer enters her second season as the UCF head rowing coach in 2009-10. Cramer was named UCF's head rowing coach in June 2008 aft er serving as the Knights' interim head coach during the 2008 spring campaign.

Cramer is no stranger to the UCF rowing program, however, having spent six seasons at UCF as either the head coach or as an assistant coach.

In her fi rst season as the Knights' head coach in 2009, Cramer led her squad to a third-place showing in the South Region and to a 10th-place overall fi nish at the Aramark South/Central Regional Championships.

During the event, Cramer's varsity eight boat fi nished in fourth place in the Varsity Eight Peti te Final aft er out-rowing Notre Dame and Kansas State.

During her fi rst three seasons with the Black and Gold, Cramer worked with the novice squad, guiding them to numerous victories, including wins over Clemson, Columbia, Miami, Syracuse, Tennessee and UCLA.

Cramer served as an assistant coach at the University of San Diego for two years prior to her arrival in Orlando. Her responsibiliti es there included training the nov-ice women's squad and acti ng as the primary recruiter.

Before her sti nt at USD, Cramer was the men's novice crew coach at the University of Notre Dame for a year, while she also worked as an intern with the University's Recreati on Services department. In recogniti on of her contributi ons to the Fight-ing Irish rowing program, the team gave her the Christopher J. Nye Award for in-tegrity, leadership and unselfi sh dedicati on - an honor traditi onally bestowed on a student-athlete.

As an undergraduate at Dartmouth College, Cramer rowed for the Big Green and competed in the 1997 and 1998 NCAA Rowing Championships. She was voted the team's most outstanding freshman in 1996. In 2000, while fi nishing her degree, she served as a student intern coach in charge of the varsity four.

From 1993 to 1995, Cramer trained at the Mount Baker Rowing and Sailing Center, where she was the stroke of the Junior Nati onal Championship eight crew. She also was invited to U.S. Junior Nati onal Team Selecti on Camp in 1994.

Cramer, who earned her bachelor's degree in psychology from Dartmouth in 2000, earned her USRowing Level III coaching certi fi cati on in 2003 and has been a mem-ber of USRowing since 1994.

The former Becky Frost, she married Andrew Cramer in July 2008.

SUSAN COHEN

ASSISTANT COACH • SECOND SEASON

Susan Cohen enters her second season as an assis-tant coach with the UCF rowing program in 2009-10. Aft er serving as the novice coach in her fi rst season, Cohen took over as the Knights' recruiti ng coordina-tor and varsity assistant coach for the 2010 season.

In 2009, Cohen guided UCF’s novice eight boat to a third-place fi nish in the Grand Final at the Aramark

South/Central Regional Championships, while the squad also won seven of its eight regular-season races under Cohen’s directi on.

Cohen was the novice coach for Connecti cut College beginning in 2007, where she helped with the development of an on-water training program as well as a weight circuit training program. Along with coaching the novice, she gained experience with the eights, fours and pairs.

The Camels' novice squad won a conference ti tle under Cohen, while the novice four earned the gold medal at last year's New England Fours Championship.

Before starti ng a career in coaching, Cohen was a member of the Ohio State row-ing team from 2002-06. With the Buckeyes, she won the Nati onal Buckeye Scholar-ship Award and also was an Academic All-Big Ten selecti on.

Cohen graduated from Ohio State with a bachelor's degree in linguisti cs.

JOEL FURTEK

ASSISTANT COACH • FIRST SEASON

Joel Furtek enters his fi rst year as the assistant coach for the UCF rowing team for the 2009-10 season.

Previous to becoming the newest additi on to the UCF rowing staff , Furtek spent one year as rigger/boatman and assistant coach at the University of Miami. During his ti me with the Hurricanes, Furtek led the second varsity eight team to its best fi nish in program-history at the ACC Championships with a

third-place showing.

Furtek originally launched his collegiate coaching career in 1993 as the head nov-ice coach at the University of Virginia. His guidance resulted in multi ple Southern and Central Champion crews and eight Nati onal Championship medals for the var-sity team.

Furtek eventually returned to Virginia in 2002 as the assistant coach. Throughout his seven years at Virginia, he took charge in designing and implementi ng training

plans and developing the fi tness, strength and skill of the second-ti er varsity row-ers. Furtek also assisted in recruitment eff orts.

In between his years with the University of Virginia, he held the positi on as head rowing coach at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1997-2002. During the fi ve-year period, Furtek directed the start-up and operati on of the row-ing team, put into acti on training and academic programs and recruited student-athletes and staff . Under Furtek’s guidance, the UNC Varsity 4+ won the bronze medal at NCAA Championships in 1998.

Furtek served as the sports equipment technician for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Ga. There, he installed and removed the rowing, canoe and kayak venue and provided on-call support to the Olympic venue during the games. He also as-sisted in planning the original bid packages for Olympic contract.

Furtek completed his bachelor’s degree in history at Yale University in 1990. While at Yale, Furtek coxed for four years and earned two varsity lett ers.

Two Knights Named All-South Region

UCF rowers Liz Robinson and Chelsey Lauzon both earned spots on the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Associati on (CRCA) All-South Region teams in 2009. Lauzon was named to the nine-member All-South Region First Team, becoming only the fourth Knight, and the fi rst freshman, in pro-gram history to earn the disti ncti on, while Robinson garnered a spot on the six-member second team. The CRCA selects athletes based on nomi-nati ons from coaches and by the strength of their teams’ regional fi n-ish. Nominees must be eligible student-athletes who have competed in their teams’ varsity boat in 75-percent of the season’s races. A nati ve of Rockford, Mich., Lauzon earned a seat in the varsity eight boat in all fi ve of UCF’s events last season, rowing in the fourth seat for the Longhorn Invitati onal and the sixth seat in the Knights’ fi nal four events. Coming out of Seatt le, Wash., Robinson started the season rowing with the second varsity-eight boat, before earning a seat in the varsity eight for the Vir-ginia Invitati onal on April 11. KEITH R. TRIBBLE • DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICSThe thread that has bridged together nearly three decades working in and around the collegiate community has been Keith Tribble’s history of building programs with strong foundati ons and dynamic structure.

Since his start as Director of Athleti cs and Executi ve Vice President for the University of Central Florida Athleti cs Associati on on June 6, 2006, Tribble has quickly taken hold of the program’s blueprints and promised to lead with a principle that everyone associated with the program will also share - to “fi nish.”

In additi on, the other focal point of his concentrati on is the oversight of the constructi on, expansion and completi on of the noted UCF Athleti cs Faciliti es Master Plan. When fi nished, the plan will touch all areas of the student-athletes’ well-being, including residenti al housing, academic and mentoring support faciliti es and state-of-the-art performance venues where UCF fans and supporters can cheer on the Knights. To date, Tribble has overseen $150 million in new constructi on and improvements to UCF athleti c faciliti es since his arrival.

Through a renewed commitment, Tribble has been most proud of the record academic achievement of the UCF student-athletes during his ti me in Orlando. The Knights, for the third-straight year in 2008-09, placed the highest number of student-athletes on the Conference USA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll with 224 representati ves maintaining a 3.0 grade-point average or bett er.

Much of UCF Athleti cs went from transiti oning into Conference USA to competi ng for its ti tles in just a few

short years. The football program has played for two C-USA ti tles since 2005, winning the championship and coveted AutoZone Liberty Bowl berth in 2007. In 2007-08, other programs such as women’s soccer and soft ball, and members of women’s track and fi eld, claimed C-USA ti tles. In 2008-09, men’s golf reigned over the league, in additi on to a big Conference USA Tournament championship from women’s basketball. Over half of the programs have competed in NCAA postseason tournaments the past three years.

Successful student-athletes start with top-notch coaching and at UCF the commitment to coaching excellence has been evident. Among Tribble’s transacti ons so far has been the renewal of several successful veteran coaches, including Amanda Cromwell (women’s soccer), Renee Luers-Gillispie (soft ball) and George O’Leary (football).

Additi onally, Tribble was instrumental in the hiring of several new head coaches, including Becky Cramer (women’s rowing), Bryan Cunningham (men’s soccer), Todd Dagenais (women’s volleyball), Donnie Jones (men’s basketball), Stephanie Nickitas (women’s tennis), Terry Rooney (baseball), Caryl Smith Gilbert (women’s track and fi eld/cross country), Courtney Trimble (women’s golf), Bryce Wallor (men’s golf) and Joi Williams (women’s basketball).

Tribble att ended the University of Florida where he played off ensive guard for three bowl teams. He graduated in 1977 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism (public relati ons and marketi ng). Tribble and his wife, Terri, have a daughter, Carlyn, and a son, Kyle.

Keith Tribble is committ ed to the concept of the well-rounded student-athlete, emphasizing the importance of their academic prowess off the fi eld as well as championship results on.
