2011 Season PreviewQuarterback Je Godfrey So. 5-11/182 159-for-238, 8 INT, 13 TD, 2,159 YDSBlake Bortles RFr. 6-4/223 Oviedo High SchoolRob Calabrese Sr. 6-2/213 25-for-39, 2 INT, 2 TD, 316 YDS

UCFs dual-threat quarterback, Je Godfrey, received plenty of preseason praise by being selected to the Davey OBrien Award and the College Football Perfor-mance Awards Quarterback Trophy Watch Lists. And why not since he was the C-USA Freshman of the Year as well as a Freshman All-American. The Miami na ve guided the Knights to a program-record 11 victories, a top-20 ranking, a C-USA tle and an AutoZone Liberty Bowl victory, and he accomplished those feats by leading all FBS freshmen with a 66.8 comple on percentage. Godfrey also rushed for a UCF quarterback single-season record 566 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Two solid arms anchor the quarterback posi on behind Godfrey. Redshirt fresh-man Blake Bortles racked up a Seminole County-record 5,576 career yards at Ovie-do High School, and received plenty of reps with the second team during spring ball. Meanwhile, Rob Calabrese has transi oned into a wide receiver for his senior year, but has thrown for 1,240 yards and 12 touchdowns during his UCF career.

    Wide Receiver Quincy McDu e Jr. 5-10/175 13 REC, 144 YDS, 2 TDKhymest Williams RSr. 5-10/179 5 REC, 73 YDS, 0 TD

    A.J. Guyton RSr. 5-11/198 28 REC, 353 YDS, 3 TDMarquee Williams RSo. 6-0/202 1 REC, 15 YDS, 0 TD

Godfrey did lose wide receivers Brian Wa ers (47 recep ons), Jamar Newsome (37) and Kamar Aiken (32) from last years championship squad. That only means that A.J. Guyton steps up as the veteran wideout for 2011. The senior is approach-ing his 100th-career recep on, bringing totals of 95 catches for 1,178 yards into his fi nal year with the Black and Gold. Godfrey found Guyton on a 44-yard scoring strike in a 16-point second quarter vs. Houston in what was his longest recep on of 2010.

Quincy McDu e maybe earning na onal publicity for his work as a kick returner, yet the junior s ll managed 13 recep ons and two touchdowns as a sophomore. Khymest Williams, Marquee Williams, Calabrese and redshirt freshmen Josh Re-ese and J.J. Worton all will be looked upon as well to become primary targets for the sophomore quarterback.

The do-it-all package for the Knights includes ght end Adam Nissley, H-back Bren-dan Kelly and fullback Billy Giovane . The trio appeared in all 14 contests in 2010, and add in former high school wideout Dontravius Floyd and o ensive coordinator Charlie Taa e will have a plethora of op ons in the playbook.

One of the most underappreciated players on the roster, Nissley con nues to just do his job. Protec ng the UCF signal-caller and holding down the end of the line since 2008, the Cumming, Ga., na ve has 17-career recep ons, highlighted by a three-yard touchdown haul at the end of the second quarter vs. Rice last year.

UCFs 2010 leading rusher. The AutoZone Liberty Bowl MVP and the C-USA Cham-pionship Game MVP. And the workhorse of the 2009 roster. This all sounds like the bio of one individual running back. In the Knights case, though, it is only a small glimpse into a highly-talented 2011 backfi eld.

Combined with Godfreys 10 touchdowns last year, Ronnie Weaver (14), Latavius Murray (14) and Brynn Harvey (15) have supplied UCF with a total of 53 rushing touchdowns since 2008. Murrays 10-yard fourth-quarter score to defeat Georgia, 10-6, in the Liberty Bowl may rank as the most-important rushing touchdown in UCF history as it was the Knights fi rst bowl-game victory.

Weaver has amassed at least 100 carries twice in three seasons as a Knight, rushed for six points three mes against Rice last year and was on the All-C-USA Second Team. And Harvey has recovered from a torn ACL su ered in the spring of 2010 to help make UCF one of the most dynamic teams in the na on at running back.

Paving the way for the o ense, UCFs returning linemen combined for 44 starts last season, and even though sophomore Chris Mar n earned just three starts at le tackle, one of those occurred in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl. The departure of Jah Reid to the NFL Dra and the Bal more Ravens le open the right tackle posi on, but simple readjustments by Theo Goins and Nick Pieschel will enable the Knights to pick up where they le o . And where they le o was a 2010 campaign in which they allowed just 1.43 sacks per game.

Two of the top defensive backs in C-USA, and possibly even the country, are more than ready for their junior seasons. Free safety Kemal Ishmael was the last player to touch a football in 2010, knocking down a Hail Mary a empt in the endzone by Georgias Aaron Murray for the AutoZone Liberty Bowl victory. He also capped o the year with a team-high 93 tackles.

The preseason a en on, though, has made its way over to cornerback Josh Rob-inson. The na ve of Sunrise, Fla., grabbed a spot on four na onal watch lists, in-cluding the Thorpe Award (Top Defensive Back) and Bronko Nagurski Award (Top Defensive Player). Robinson has collected eight intercep ons in two years, while he broke-up a staggering 13 passes in 2010.

And to replace Reggie Weams and Jus n Boddie, UCF will look to redshirt freshman Clay-ton Geathers at strong safety and junior A.J. Bouye, who has seen me in 22 games with 36 tackles, at the other cornerback posi on.

An area that head coach George OLeary has said he is constantly looking at, the linebacker corps has a senior leader in Josh Linam in the middle as he had a break-out junior year with 78 tackles and 9.0 tackles for loss. Linam will now be fl anked by two rela vely new faces due to the departure of Derrick Hallman, Lawrence Young and Chance Henderson.

A cousin of Godfrey, Ray Shipman is s ll adjus ng to the gridiron. Following one year of football at Monsignor Pace High School and a pair of seasons with the University of Florida basketball team, he spent me at safety with UCF in 2010 and appeared in one game with the special teams.

On the other side of Linam lies a li le more experience in Loren Robinson (10-ca-reer games) and Jonathan Davis, who served as a running back for UCF his fi rst two years and was the Georgia Class 4A State Defensive Player of the Year in 2008.

Victor Gray sits as the lone consistent starter on the D-line who returns for 2011. Defensive ends Bruce Miller and David Williams as well as right tackle Wes Tunuufi Sauvao were a bruising force, helping the Knights hold opponents to only nine rushing touchdowns, tying a UCF record. And Gray was right in the center of it all, star ng 11 contests at le tackle, registering 7.0 tackles for loss.

Two Knights already have made statements with their game and will be called upon to step up even further. Troy Davis totaled 5.5 sacks in 2010, and had fi ve more in UCFs Spring Game, while Darius Nall was an All-C-USA Second Team pick with 8.5 sacks o the bench. Also look for E.J. Dunston (three starts at right tackle) and junior-college transfers Toby Jackson and Jose Jose to see a lot of snaps as well.

Under Tim Salems guidance, UCF ranked as the No. 2 overall special teams unit in the na on, ranking fi rst in kicko returns and 12th in punt returns. Both McDu e and Robinson were tagged on the 2011 CFPA Watch Lists for their e orts during 2010. McDu e already has 1,813 yards and three kick return touchdowns, while Robinson posted 304 yards on 20 a empts in his fi rst season returning punts.

Nick Ca oi enters his fi nal campaign and worked relessly to improve his leg strength during the o season. His conversion of a fi eld-goal try to e Georgia be-fore hal ime of the AutoZone Liberty Bowl proved to be one of his most crucial makes of his career. And although Blake Clingan will no longer handle pun ng du- es a er carrying the workload from 2007-10, David Bohner was called upon dur-ing 2010, boo ng eight punts for a 37.6 average.

2009-10 season, Conference USA is s ll going strong. From the beginning, dedica on to excellence has been the leagues guiding principle and remains to-day a common thread for a promising future. C-USA is home to 12 na onally prominent, tradi on-rich members in East Carolina, Houston, Marshall, Mem-phis, Rice, SMU, Southern Miss, Tulane, Tulsa, UAB, UCF and UTEP. This combina on enhances men's and women's programs that are immersed in athle c suc-cess and academic prowess. Together, we are com-mi ed to excellence, integrity and leadership in ath-le cs, academics and in our communi es.

All C-USA ins tu ons sponsor Division I-A foot-ball, along with several other mens and womens athle c programs, many of which compete regularly for NCAA Championships. C-USA sponsors compe - on in 20 sports - nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and indoor and outdoor track and fi eld) and 11 for women (bas-ketball, cross country, golf, rowing, so ball, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and fi eld and volleyball).

George OLearyHead Coach - Eighth Season with the Knights

In his seven years at UCF, George OLeary has helped the Knights achieve dozens of historic fi rsts including games in front of sellout crowds on campus, individual accolades for student-ath-letes, two conference championships and trips to

pres gious bowl games. For OLeary, it has been business as usual.

Since taking over the program in 2004, OLeary has made sure that UCF has reached new heights. On and o of the fi eld, the veteran head coach has molded his program into a consistent winner.

His hard work contributed to the construc on of Bright House Networks Stadium. Interest in the program has never been higher. His student-athletes are enjoying record success in the classroom, and the Knights are winning on the football fi eld.

OLeary guided the 2010 Knights to the schools fi rst 11-win season, the Confer-ence USA Championship and an AutoZone Liberty Bowl win over Georgia. The Knights earned their fi rst-ever na onal rankings in 2010, fi nishing the year at No. 20 in the coaches poll, and OLeary was rewarded with the C-USA Coach of the Year award as voted on by his peers for the third me in six years.

For the college football world, the season was more evidence that OLeary has built the Knights into a powerful program.

The 2010 season surpassed even the 2007 year when OLeary guided the Knights to what was then arguably the fi nest campaign in program history. UCF won 10 contests that season, claimed the C-USA Championship and par cipated in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl where UCF fans helped set the bowls all- me a endance record.

There was li le suspense as to who would garner C-USA Coach of the Year honors that year either. For the Knights and their fans, 2007 was truly a year to remember.

And just two years later, OLeary and the Knights put together an impressive run at the end of the 2009 season to earn a bid to the St. Petersburg Bowl. UCF went 5-1 down the stretch and won six-straight C-USA contests to close out the regular season. That included the Knights fi rst win in school history over a na onally-ranked Football Bowl Subdivision program when they upset No. 13/12 Houston, 37-32, on Homecoming.

Helping UCF Arrive on the Na onal Scene OLeary has already le his stamp on the Knights program. When he arrived in Orlando in 2004, UCF was not a factor on the regional or na onal scenes.

OLeary rebuilt the program from the ground up. He lobbied for new facili es,

toured the state to gain publicity, restocked UCF with top recruits and made sure his student-athletes excelled in their studies.

The growth of the program was no more evident than in 2007. UCF posted a school-record seven-game winning streak during the season. The conference championship was the fi rst in program history.

The 10 wins during the year established a program record at the FBS level which UCF would eclipse in 2010.

OLeary helped tailback Kevin Smith post one of the most dominant single-season rushing performances. The junior rushed for 2,567 yards, good for second all- me in NCAA history, and 29 touchdowns in 2007. He became the only rusher in the state of Florida and the 12th all- me in the NCAA FBS to eclipse the 2,000-yard mark in a season.

The 2008 season saw Joe Burne also earn fi rst-team All-America honors as he sha ered the school and C-USA punt return records and graduated ranked 19th in NCAA history in career punt return yards.

In 2009, Josh Robinson was a fi rst-team freshman All-American and Bruce Miller won the fi rst of two consecu ve C-USA Defensive Player of the Year awards. In ad-di on to Miller, Je Godfrey was named the 2010 C-USA Freshman of the Year and a school-record fi ve Knights made the All-C-USA First Team during the memorable 2010 campaign.

Excellence o the Field OLeary has reshaped the UCF program in every facet, including improved results in the classroom. The Knights turned in a successful e ort in the classroom during the 2008 campaign, registering the highest in-season grade-point average in pro-gram history at 2.782. A total of 55 student-athletes recorded a GPA of least 3.0 during the fall 2008 semester.

Defensive lineman Keith Shologan became the fi rst player in school history to re-ceive ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America First Team honors in 2007. Rocky Ross picked up Academic All-America honors in 2009. Ross, Shologan, Share Ra-shad and Josh Linam have been selected to the C-USA Football All-Academic Team under OLeary. T.J. Harnden received UCFs highest honor, the Order of Pegasus, in 2009.

In 2008, Rashad was named to the league all-academic squad for the second-con-secu ve year. In 2007, he was named the UCF Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, becoming the second-straight football player to earn the honor. Rashad was twice named to the Na onal Football Founda on and College Hall of Fames Hampshire Honors Society. O ensive lineman Dan Veenstra was the award winner in 2006.

Guiding the Knights Toward Prominence The 2006 season featured several memorable moments for the Knights as they fi nished their fi nal campaign at the Florida Citrus Bowl. Wide receiver Mike Sims-Walker had a record-breaking season. The Orlando na ve broke the single-season

school record for recep ons with 90 and hauled in 1,178 receiving yards just a year removed from an ACL injury. He earned All-C-USA First Team honors and was one of fi ve Knights recognized for their strong play by the league o ce.

In 2005, OLearys second season at UCF, he engineered one of the top turn-arounds in the history of college football. Just one year removed from an 0-11 campaign, he guided the Knights to a historic season, complete with the programs fi rst bowl appearance.

OLeary led UCF to the fourth-best turnaround in NCAA history with a record of 8-5. The Knights went 7-1 in C-USA and claimed the leagues East Division tle. The squad became just the sixth team in NCAA history to go to a bowl game a year a er going winless as the Knights par cipated in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl.

The college football world took no ce of the turnaround. OLeary was named the C-USA Coach of the Year. Both CBSsports.com and SportsIllustrated.com named him the na onal coach of the year.

Facing an 11-game schedule with just four home games, his squad became just the fourth team in NCAA history to earn a bowl berth while playing seven road contests. Even more remarkable, the turnaround was made with a team of mostly underclassmen.

Pipeline to the Pros OLeary has experience coaching on the professional level and, as a result, has helped several Knights move on to the NFL. Nine Knights who played under OLeary have been selected in the NFL Dra .

Torell Troup went in the second round, 41st overall, to Bu alo in 2010, and the Knights had a pair of selec ons in 2011 in Jah Reid (third round by Bal more) and Bruce Miller (seventh round by San Francisco). Meanwhile, Burne was a fi h-round pick of Pi sburgh in 2009. Smith was one of three UCF players taken in the 2008 dra , as he was the fi rst pick of the third round by Detroit. O ensive lineman Josh Si on went to Green Bay in the fourth round and Kansas City selected ght end Mike Merri with its seventh-round pick.

A er his incredible senior season in 2006, Sims-Walker was selected by Jackson-ville in the third round. In the previous years dra , wide receiver Brandon Mar-shall was Denvers fourth-round selec on.

Other former Knights who played under OLeary, including defensive lineman Paul Carrington, tailback Alex Haynes, ght end Darcy Johnson and kicker Ma Prater, have also spent me in the NFL.

Success at Georgia Tech OLeary was the head coach at Georgia Tech from 1994-01 a er taking over as interim head coach for the fi nal three games of the 1994 season. During his seven-year s nt at Georgia Tech, OLeary guided the Yellow Jackets to a 52-33 record. The squad made fi ve bowl appearances under OLeary.

From 1995-01, Georgia Tech recorded fi ve winning seasons in six years. His 1998 squad won the Atlan c Coast Conference Championship and played in the Gator Bowl on New Years Day. OLearys Georgia Tech teams won at least seven games on four occasions , including a 10-win campaign in 1998 and nine victories in 2000. The 2000 Bobby Dodd Na onal Coach of the Year, OLeary was named the ACC Coach of the Year in 1998 and 2000.

One trademark of OLearys tenure as a head coach has been the quality of his coaching sta s. While at Georgia Tech, he had three assistants who later gar-nered head coaching jobs. Ralph Friedgen (Maryland), Randy Edsall (Connec cut)

and Ted Roof (Duke) all served under OLeary. Both Friedgen and Edsall led their schools to BCS conference tles.

NFL Experience Prior to coming to UCF, OLeary served on Minnesotas NFL coaching sta for two seasons. In 2003, he was the Vikings defensive coordinator. In his fi rst season with the team in 2002, he guided the defensive line into becoming the strength of the Minnesota defense. He also served as the squads assistant head coach.

OLeary also served as the defensive line coach for San Diego from 1992-93. In 1992, the defense had 51 sacks as the Chargers won the AFC West with an 11-5 record.

Moving Up the Ranks OLeary had the fi rst of two s nts at Georgia Tech from 1987-91. He served as the defensive coordinator/defensive line coach. The team fi nished 11-0-1 in 1990 and won the na onal championship, defea ng Nebraska in the Florida Citrus Bowl.

A Long Island na ve, OLeary received his fi rst coaching job at the collegiate level at Syracuse (1980-86). He coached the defensive line and was also the assistant head coach his fi nal two seasons.

He started his coaching career at the high school level. From 1968-76, he coached at Central Islip (N.Y.) High School. OLeary was the head coach at the school from 1975-76, before taking over as the head coach at Liverpool High School. He posted a 37-8-1 record in fi ve seasons as a prep head coach, including a perfect 10-0 campaign in 1979.

OLeary was born in Central Islip, N.Y., and a ended Central Islip High School. He a ended the University of New Hampshire and earned his degree in physical edu-ca on. OLeary and his wife, Sharon, have two daughters, Chris and Trish, and two sons, Tim and Marty. The OLearys welcomed their fi rst grandchild in 2006 as Tim and his wife Jennifer gave birth to a son named Tate. The couple had a second son, Cullen, in 2008 and a daughter, Maggie, in 2010.

The Knights concluded the year with an 11-3 mark, won the Conference USA Championship and picked up the programs fi rst bowl win with a 10-6 victory over Georgia in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl. UCF entered the na onal rankings for the fi rst me, and ended the year ranked in both of the top 25 polls.

Kellys wideouts thrived working with freshman quarterback Je Godfrey. Brian Wa ers, who led the squad with 47 catches for 651 yards, received all-conference honorable men on honors. He was one of four Knights who totaled at least 20 catches.
