Members of the UCF men’s and women’s golf teams have the opportunity to enhance their games close to campus at the UCF Practice Facility. Located at the Twin Rivers Golf Club in nearby Oviedo, the facility was completed in 2009.

Construction on the 2,880-square foot teaching building at the location concluded in 2009. The building features hitting bays and a state-of-the-art video system to analyze each player’s swing. Also, the structure houses a player’s lounge, locker room and offices for the UCF coaching staff.

The facility is used exclusively by the UCF men’s and women’s golf programs.

The practice facility includes a six-acre short-game area, in addition to a driving range. The short-game area has a pair of putting greens and target greens. The area was designed and constructed by McCumber Golf, which was founded by former PGA TOUR player Mark McCumber. Construction began in March 2007. Twin Rivers is managed by The Golf Group, an Orlando-based company that operates six courses in the area.

UCF GOLF PRACTICE FACILITY AND COURSES

The UCF women’s golf team utilizes several of the impressive courses in the Orlando area for practice and playing. Head coach Courtney Trimble’s Knights have access to some of the top country clubs in the golf-crazy region. It is one of the biggest advantages of playing for the Knights.

The Lake Nona Golf and Country Club and the Isleworth Golf Club are amongst these elite courses. Minutes from UCF’s brand new medical school, the Lake Nona community is home to Ernie Els, Annika Sorenstam, Ben Curtis, Sergio Garcia, Retief Goosen and many other prominent players. Lake Nona’s annual cross-town challenge for the Tavistock Cup against Isleworth is broadcast nationally. Isleworth residents include Tiger Woods, Mark O’Meara, Stuart Appleby and Paula Creamer.

The Knights and many of the nation’s premier women’s golf teams love playing in the UCF Challenge at the RedTail Golf Club. In addition to the UCF Challenge, the Sorrento course has also served as home to the 2009 and 2010 men’s Conference USA Championship and also hosted men’s NCAA Regional play in 2009.

The Rio Pinar Country Club is another course for the Knights. The course previously served as the host site for the PGA TOUR’s Citrus Open. The country club is the home of the Rio Pinar Invitational.

The North Shore Golf Club is one of the upscale, semi-private courses that UCF has unlimited access to for practicing and playing. The front nine is a modern layout and the back nine features more of a classic style.

Located just minutes away from campus, the Twin Rivers Golf Club is the home of the UCF Practice Facility, which was completed in 2009. The Knights have ample opportunity to play on the picturesque course. Not far south of campus is Stoneybrook East, a course which will test golfers with an abundance of water hazards.

Courtney TrimbleHead Coach - Third Season at UCF

In Courtney Trimble’s two years at UCF, the Duluth, Ga., native has developed a young program into a conference contender. Challenging the Knights with quality opponents, tough tournament fields and achieving academic excellence, Trimble is preparing the team for elite national recognition.

Success during the 2010-11 season not only came on the course (UCF defeated No. 21 Kent State head-to-head), but off as the Knights had six team members named to the Conference USA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll.

It didn’t take long for UCF to see some of the improvements that Trimble hopes to continue to bring. UCF finished in the top three in two out of its four tournaments during her first fall in Orlando. UCF had just two top-three team finishes in the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons combined. UCF’s 879 at the FIU/Pat Bradley Invitational in Fort Myers was a school record low by 10 strokes.

When Trimble’s first spring season rolled around, UCF opened it in historic fashion, winning the team championship at the Hurricane Invitational in Miami Lakes - the Knights’ first team title since 2002. UCF earned GolfWeek’s National Team of the Week honors for its efforts.

As the season progressed, three Knights, Katie Detlefsen, Valentina Fontaine and Carolin Pinegger, earned All-Conference USA honors. Detlefsen would go on to win a host of academic awards including ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America recognition and the LPGA’s Dinah Shore Trophy Award.

A proven winner who has experienced success at the collegiate level as both a coach and player, this success is nothing new to Trimble.

When UCF Director of Athletics Keith Tribble hired Trimble, he correctly saw a dynamic young coach who was poised to take UCF on a charge up the NCAA rankings. His words have proven prophetic so far.

“Courtney has seen the top of the collegiate golf world at Auburn and will be able to utilize our new golf facility, the tremendous Orlando golf community and this great University to get us to the top,” Tribble said at the time of her hire. “We look forward to building on our NCAA Regional

appearances the past two seasons and become a consistent nationally-recognized program.”

Immediately prior to UCF, Trimble spent three and a half years as an assistant coach at her alma mater, Auburn University, working under long-time Tigers head coach Kim Evans. The Tigers finished the 2008-09 season ranked eighth nationally. Trimble also helped coach the Tigers to the 2006 and 2009 SEC Championships, four NCAA East Regional berths and three NCAA Championship appearances. The one-time All-American player helped mentor several other Tiger All-Americans, including first-teamers Maria Martinez (2006), Cydney Clanton in 2008 and Candace Schepperle (2009), along with third-team pick Nicole Hage (2007) who also earned honorable mention All-America honors in 2006.

Trimble also worked with consecutive SEC Freshmen of the Year in Schepperle (2007) and Clanton (2008). Clanton was also named the 2008 NGCA National Freshman of the Year.

Formerly Courtney Swaim, Trimble spent over two years on the Duramed FUTURES Tour, competing in 37 tournaments and posting four top-five finishes. She qualified for the 2004 U.S. Women’s Open and made the cut, finishing 61st.

Trimble played at Auburn from 1998-2002. Trimble’s senior season was the most successful in the program’s history as the 2001-02 team finished no worse than second in 12 tournaments, amassed five victories and was national runner-up at the NCAA Championships, the school’s best finish in the tournament.

Individually, Trimble is one of Auburn’s most decorated players. She played in 46 tournaments over the course of her career, more than any other Auburn golfer. She was an All-SEC selection in 1999 and 2001 and earned both All-SEC and All-America honors in 2002. Trimble was also a member of the 2002 victorious Curtis Cup team and played in the 2002 U.S. Women’s Open as an amateur.

Trimble graduated from Auburn in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. She is married to Billy Trimble and the couple have a son, Owen, who was born in January 2012.

Mary BryanAssistant Coach - Third Season at UCF

Mary Bryan, who previously played on the LPGA tour for 13 consecutive seasons joined UCF in 2009.

Bryan brings a resume to UCF on a full-time basis that includes LPGA Tour playing experience, an ESPN and CBS broadcasting career, and top-level instructional background at some of Orlando - and the country’s - finest golf academies. An enthusiastic and energetic person, the assistant coach enjoys lending her talents to the women of the UCF golf team. Most recently Bryan instructed golf at the Grand Cypress Academy of golf in Orlando, which has been ranked among the top 25 golf schools in America annually since 1999.

“Not everybody who can play can teach,” said Fred Griffin, director of the academy and himself considered one of the top teachers of the game in America. “Real skill and talent are required to work effectively with someone who is just learning the game or wanting to improve. Mary has that ability.”

Bryans knowledge has helped young players including Jordyn Hage and Kaitlyn Price.

Prior to Bryans time playing on the LPGA tour from 1971-84, she attended Eastern New Mexico in Portales where she earned a sociology degree in 1971. Bryan was the runner-up at the New Mexico State Amateur in 1968 while in college. The following year she won the state title back in her native Michigan.

Bryan has been a fixture on the broadcasting scene with over 300 national broadcasts on ESPN, CBS, NBC, ABC, The Golf Channel and also the PGA Radio Network. Her broadcasting career also includes the NCAA Championships.

Bryan was the first woman to ever broadcast a men’s major PGA Tour event when the PGA Championship came to the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

Now the Knights are able to benefit from that ability each and every day.

HISTORYGolf success at UCF has been characterized by a long list of individual accomplishments as well as team success in recent years. In addition to Liz Earley’s two appearances in the NCAA Finals, she was one of three women from UCF to compete in the 1993 U.S. Open. HISTORY1999-00-ATLANTICSUNCHAMPIONSNCAAEASTREGIONAL Down by 19 strokes with a day to play, UCF overtakes Campbell University in the greatest comeback in A-Sun Women’s Golf Champion-ship history and claims its second consecutive A-Sun Title. Jill Fjelstul is named A-Sun Coach of the Year. Line Berg and Monica Gundersrud earn first-team All-A-Sun honors. Tanja Arnold and Olivia Hartley earn second-team recogni-tion. UCF finished 15th of 24 at the NCAA East Regional in Columbus, Ohio. Gundersrud fin-ishes the year ranked 87th in the MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings, while the UCF finishes ranked 38th.

2000-01-NCAACENTRALREGIONALHaving its best season since the 1995-96 Na-tional Championship qualifying team, UCF hit a wall at the frigid NCAA Central Regional in West Lafayette, Ind. UCF gained an at-large bid to the tournament after finishing second in the Atlantic Sun Tournament. The Knights started off the year with a bang, finishing 12th of 21 teams at the NCAA Women’s Fall Preview in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. Tanja Arnold earned At-lantic Sun Player of the Year honors. Arnold and Olivia Hartley were both named to the Atlantic Sun First Team, while Kim Tudor and Monica Gundersrud made second team all-conference. UCF won two tournaments during the year, the Ole Miss Lady Rebel Invitational and the third annual UCF Invitational.

2001-02-NCAASOUTHREGIONAL UCF once again made a trip to the NCAA Re-gionals, as the Knights earned a spot in the South Regional at LSU. UCF placed 15th in the regional after finishing second at the Atlantic Sun Championship. Freshman Federica Piovano was named the Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year, while also earning first-team all-Atlantic Sun honors. Olivia Hartley and Kim Tudor were named second-team All-Atlantic Sun while Tu-dor also finished ninth at the NCAA Regional.

2003-04 Senior Sarah Greene was named to the Atlantic Sun all-conference second team while Lauren Motyl was named to the Atlantic Sun all-fresh-man team.

2004-05 Freshman Ashley Grier posted five top-five fin-ishes, including a third-place finish at the At-lantic Sun Conference Championship, en route to earning second-team All-A-Sun honors. UCF challenges for the A-Sun title but falters late and finishes third.

2005-06 The addition of first-year head coach Emilee Klein in November provided instant benefits as the team finished runner-up at the Stetson In-vitational. It was the best team finish in more than three years. The squad picked up another second-place finish at the Waterlefe Invitational and tied for third at the Conference USA Cham-pionships. Ashley Grier earned third-team all-conference honors along with Holly Boot and Kristy McLaughlin. Grier also was named to the 2006 National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Team and the Conference USA Golf Scholar Athlete of the Year.

2006-07 The Knights end the season in a three-way tie for third place at the Conference USA Champi-onship behind a fourth-place finish by Stephanie Connelly, who was named to the all-tournament team as well as being named to the All-C-USA Third Team. Sara Hurwitch was named the C-USA Freshman of the Year and earned second-team All-C-USA honors.

2007-08-NCAAEASTREGIONAL UCF made its first trip to the NCAA Region-als since 2002, earning an at-large bid into the NCAA East Regional after placing fourth at the Conference USA Championship. Junior Mayule Tomimbang was named to the All-C-USA First Team, while fellow junior Stephanie Connelly earned All-C-USA honors for the second-consec-utive year after making the third team.

2008-09-NCAAEASTREGIONAL UCF made consecutive appearances in the NCAA Regionals as the Knights were selected to play in Gainesville. Stephanie Connelly was the top individual finisher (and second overall) at the regional with an even-par 210 and earned a spot at the NCAA Championships. Connelly had a great run at the NCAAs as she finished in a tie for 11th place overall in the most elite of fields, spending much of the 72-hole event in the Top 10. UCF, meanwhile, headed into the NCAAs with a full head of steam after placing second at the Conference USA Championship, its best-ever showing since joining the league in 2005-06. Connelly was named to the all-conference second team while Katie Detlefsen was named to the C-USA All-Academic Team, carrying a 4.0 cumulative GPA.

2009-10 In their first season of action under new head coach Courtney Trimble, the Knights accom-plished a feat that had not been achieved since 2002 in winning an event. UCF took overall team title at the Hurricane Invitational in February. The team earned UCF GolfWeek’s National Team of the Week honor. Three Knights, Katie Detlef-sen, Valentina Fontaine and Carolin Pinegger, earned All-Conference USA honors. Detlefsen also earned several academic awards including the LPGA’s Dinah Shore Trophy Award and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America At Large status. Detlefsen and Fontaine were named to the NGCA All-America Scholar team as well.

Fall2011LadyNorthernInvitationalChampions

Katie Detlefsen was named to Capital One Academic All-America At-Large First Team. Detlefsen also earned a spot on the Confer-ence USA Women’s Golf All-Academic Team for the third-straight year. Carolin Pinegger was named to the All C-USA third team.
