Kirk Nauman begins his eighth season as the men’s and women’s track & field coach in 2014-15. In his first seven years at CSS, Coach Nauman has had six NCAA Division III All-Americans and 21 NCAA qualifiers.

Nauman has guided the Saints to seven consecutive UMAC Women’s Outdoor Championships and four UMAC Men’s Outdoor Championships, including the last three years. His men’s and women’s teams have also won five consecutive UMAC Indoor Championships.

He has been named UMAC Women’s Outdoor Coach of the Year on five occasions and the women’s indoor coach of the year the past five seasons. He was also the UMAC Men’s Indoor and Outdoor Coach of the Year six times.

Between the indoor and outdoor seasons in 2014,

Nauman had four women earn All-America honors. During the indoor season, all three women competing came home with All-American accolades. Becky Huberty placed a program-best third in the hammer throw for her second consecutive outdoor All-American honor.

Prior to arriving at CSS, Nauman coached four seasons at Saint Mary’s University in Winona. During his four years at Saint Mary’s, Nauman’s success reached from the program level -- 72 Cardinal event records broken -- to the national level.

He landed at least one Cardinal athlete at an NCAA Division III Championship meet in each of his four years leading the program in Winona. Of the 17 NCAA participants from SMU, four achieved All-American status. Two Cardinal surpassed championship automatic qualifying standards while 37 more bettered provisional qualifying cuts. Eighteen of his athletes also were honored with USTFCCCA All-Academic Team selection.

Within the MIAC conference, Nauman coached 13 conference champions, three MIAC record-holders, 60 all-conference selections, and a pair of field athletes of the meet. He was also named the 2005 MIAC Indoor Coach of the Year.

Nauman resides in Duluth with his wife, current CSS Intramural Sports Coordinator/Assistant Burns Wellness Commons Facility Manager Jamie Nauman.

Todd Bouchie enters his fifth season as a full time track & field assistant in 2014-15. Bouchie had been a part-time assistant for the Saints since the 2005 season, coaching the throwers and high jumpers. Bouchie coached the women’s program’s first NCAA All-American in 2013 as Becky Huberty placed fourth in the hammer throw at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Huberty became the third St. Scholastica Athlete to earn NCAA All-American accolades three times, including a program-best third place finish in the hammer throw in 2014. Huberty also earned All-America honors in the Show Put at the 2014 NCAA Indoor Championships becoming the first CSS Men’s/Women’s Track & Field Athlete to earn All-America honors in both seasons in the same year. Bouchie also coached the first Decathlete to compete at the NCAA Championships in 2013, when Kevin Wagner placed ninth. Wagner also competed at the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the Decathlon, placing 14th. During the 2011-12 season, Bouchie had three throwers and one multi-event athlete qualify for the NCAA Championships, including thrower Alec Seeley, who became the first Saint to qualify for both the indoor and outdoor championships in the same season.

Prior to coming over to CSS, Bouchie coached for seven years (five as an assistant, two as a head coach) at Cloquet High School. As the throwing coach for the Lumberjacks, he guided his throwers to six qualifications for the Minnesota State Track & field Championship meet. At Cloquet, he also coached many individual conference champions, and one school record holder.

Bouchie was a member of the 1996 and 1997 University of Minnesota Duluth track & field teams that captured the indoor and outdoor Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) championships in both years. He was the indoor NSIC shot put champion in 1996. Bouchie graduated from UMD in 1998 with a Bachelors Degree in Physical Education Teaching.

He currently lives in Cloquet with his wife Jenny and daughter Alex.

Robb Winterfeld begins his fifth season as the assistant coach on the men’s & women’s cross country teams in 2014. Winterfeld also helps assist the distance runners on the CSS track & field teams. Winterfeld was a two-time steeplechase All-American at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Winterfeld was also the 2003 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Meet individual champion for the Bulldogs.

Caring for athletes is part of our bigger commitment to the community. Essentia Health

donates more than $600,000 of our sports medicine services to the region’s schools each year.

We are the official team physicians to the Duluth Huskies, UMD, UWS, Hibbing Community College,

Inline Marathon and company physicians for the Minnesota Ballet. And we’re certified athletic

trainers for high school athletes at Duluth Central, Duluth East, Esko, Hayward, Hermantown,

Hibbing, Marshall, Northwestern, Proctor and Superior.

To us, that’s what sharing expert orthopaedic care is all about.

Mid-America’s gateway to the sea, Duluth’s harbor hosts ships from dozens of nations each year. Duluthians enjoy the beauty and sport of four seasons. In close proximity to the College are beaches, biking and jogging trails, ski resorts, cross-country ski trails, boating and fishing sites and rinks for skating, curling and hockey. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is close enough for week-end visits.

Duluth offers a wide variety of cultural activities as well. Each year the city’s auditorium hosts a long list of popular entertainers. The Minnesota Ballet, Duluth Playhouse, and Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra provide exciting year-round schedules. Duluth’s many historical attractions include Glensheen, a 39-room neo-Jacobean style mansion built on the Lake Superior shore, the St. Louis County Heritage and Arts Center, and the Marine Museum at Canal Park.

Duluth’s low crime rate, high quality of life and natural beauty frequently earn it high rankings in “best places to live” surveys. Recently, the nonprofit American Institute for Economic Research ranked Duluth one of America’s best small metropolitan areas for college students.

In June 2014, Duluth was voted “America’s Best Outdoor City” by Outside Magazine

The Jerome Kruse Memorial Award was created in honor of Mr. Jerome Kruse, the long-time athletic director of Northwestern (Wis.) College and later Martin Luther College. Mr. Kruse’s life ended early, and the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) created the award to honor his dedication to the conference and its student-athletes. The annual award travels to the college that earns the most points, accumulated by the place-finishes of the college’s athletic teams in the final standings of the 17 conference-

(1) Most amount of points = Kruse Award Winner (2) Points are determined by the number of teams participating in that particular sport. First place points will be given equivalent to the number of teams competing in that particular sport. Second place, third place, etc. in descending order.EXAMPLE If there are 8 teams competing = 1st place gets 8 points, 2nd place gets 7 points, 3rd place gets 6 points, etc.If there are 5 teams competing = 1st place gets 5 points, 2nd place gets 4 points, 3rd place gets 4 points, etc.(3) Provisionary schools and associate members are not eligible for Kruse Award and are not considered in awarding points for regular season finishes(4) If two or more teams tie for the same regular season finish spot, the point value for their corresponding finishes are added together and divided by the number of teams tied, which is then awarded to all of the tied teams.Example - If there is a two-way tie for first place, you would add 8+7 and then divide by 2 so that each team receives 7.5 points.

Shea to lead the institution’s first varsity athletics program, Men’s Hockey. Genereau, a former Duluth Cathedral High School Coach who was retired prior to taking the St. Scholastica gig, quickly built up the men’s hockey program into prominence. He guided the Saints to the 1975 NAIA Men’s Hockey National Championships and a 1976 runner-up finish. He was 72-36-3 in four seasons as head coach. Genereau continued as Athletic Director through the 1977 school year. Genereau was inducted into the Minnesota Hockey Coaches Hall of Fame in 2003. Genereau passed away in 1988.

Randy Norgard – Men’s Hockey – 1973-77Norgard was part of two NAIA Men’s Hockey National Championship squads in his time at CSS. A defenseman from Duluth Central High School, Norgard was named a NAIA All-American in 1977 and a three-time All-Tournament team selection. The three-time All-Conference choice was named the team’s MVP for the program’s second championship run in 1976-77 and was also a two-year captain.

Jeanne Fleck – Women’s Cross Country – 1994-96Fleck was the first CSS runner to individually qualify for a national meet multiple times as she competed in three NAIA National Championship events. Fleck first competed on the CSS cross country team as a 29-year-old sophomore. She was the team’s Most Valuable Runner all three seasons and became the first to win the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Individual Title in 1996. Fleck was a recipient of the 1996-97 CSS Female Athlete of the Year award.

Jen Quale – Women’s Basketball – 1996-2000Quale was a two-time NAIA First Team All-Region selection in 1997 and 1998. Chris Lorentz – Softball – 1997-2001Lorentz holds numerous program records for the CSS Softball team. She is the only player in program history to record at least 100 hits, runs scored, RBIs and stolen bases in a career. Lorentz also played soccer at CSS where she was named all-conference in 1998.

Neil Runbeck – Men’s Soccer – 1998-2002Runbeck was the men’s soccer program’s career leader in points for over a decade until it was broke last fall by Joe Watt. Runbeck’s 157-point total is currently second overall. He led the team in scoring all four seasons. He holds the record for most shots in a game (14) and is tied for most assists in a game (4). His 20 goals and 15 assists during the 2001 season both rank in the top five. Runbeck was named NAIA First Team All-Region, Honorable Mention NAIA All-American, UMAC Player of the Year and Team MVP that season. Career goals was another record that Runbeck had to relinquish last fall to Andrew Jenkins. Runbeck has the second-most career goals (57) and assists (43) in program history.
