John Baggs #33From 1992-2009 John Baggs was the most successful coach in St.

Scholastica history. Baggs turned the Saints baseball program into a national powerhouse, all the while stressing the importance of being a great teammate, student and person before being a great player. Baggs developed a culture of family within the CSS baseball program, based on caring and support. He was always there for his players during the time in a Saints’ uniform and after their playing days had ended. Baggs passed away Feb. 24th, 2009, just one game into the 2009 season. While the Saints retired Baggs’ #33 jersey May 2nd, 2009, his spirit is with them every time they are together.

Corey Kemp enters his first season as the head coach of the St. Scholasti-ca baseball team. Kemp had served as one of the Saints’ top assistant coaches and pitching coach for the last eight years under the late John Baggs.

In his eight seasons as an assistant coach, Kemp has developed one of the top pitching staffs in all of Division III baseball. His Saints hurlers led the nation in ERA in both 2005 and 2006. In 2009, Kemp’s pitchers fin-ished fifth in ERA in the country and

third in winning percentage. In his eight seasons as a pitching coach, six of Kemp’s pitchers have gone on to sign profes-sional contracts, including Brett Nyquist who was taken in the 13th round of the 2002 MLB draft by the Montreal Expos and Adian Kummet who was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the June 2009 draft.

As a player, Kemp began his outstanding pitching career at Cherry High School where he led his team to the Class A State Championship in 1997. He completed his high school pitching career with a 21-4 record over three seasons of varsity baseball, including a 10-0 mark his senior year.

This winning tradition continued with the Saints as Kemp became one of the greatest and most dedicated players in CSS baseball history.

In the UMAC Tournament his junior season, Kemp sur-passed Ben Sickler (20 wins) to become the Saints all-time winningest pitcher and finished his career with 29 wins, still tops in Saints history. Kemp is also the career leader in innings pitched (233) and strikeouts (258). His 2.15 career ERA was also the program’s best upon Kemp’s graduation in 2001.

Kemp’s abilities didn’t go unnoticed, as he was named UMAC Pitcher of the Year in 2000 and an All-American fol-lowing his senior season. He also played professionally briefly in 2001 before becoming a coach at St. Scholastica. Kemp was inducted into the St. Scholastica Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002.

“As the new head coach of St. Scholastica Baseball it is my responsibility to continue the success this program has had on and off the field. We will continue to develop student-athletes into talented baseball players, excellent students, and first-class people in the community,” Kemp said. “I want to give each player the experience that Coach Baggs gave me and all the players who played for him. Many of the lessons that he taught me will continue to be shared with future Saints baseball players. As I enter into my first season as a head coach, I understand the value of being surrounded by loyal and knowledgeable assistant coaches. I am proud to say that I have exceptional assistants who have the same love for Saints baseball that I do, and together we will continue to build this program into one of the best in the country.”

Tim Anderson, a Two Harbors, Minnesota native enters his 18th year as an assistant at St. Scholastica.

TA graduated from St. Scholastica Summa cum Laude in 1992, earning academic All-America honors his senior season. He scored the win-ning run in the bottom of the 9th inning of St. Scholastica’s 9-8 vic-tory over Winona State in the 1992 NAIA playoffs.

He was an honorable mention All-Region pitcher for the Saints in

1992 and also started at second base. He earned four varsity letters at CSS after collecting four baseball letters at Two Harbors High School. After completing his playing career under the legendary coaching of John Baggs in ’92, An-derson joined Baggs’ coaching staff as a graduate assistant coach the following season. He became the top assistant in ’94 and quickly became one of the region’s most respected baseball coaches. His great contributions to Saints Baseball as a player and coach earned “TA” induction into the St. Scholastica Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999.

Anderson’s coaching duties include hitting instruction, video tape analysis, outfield play, offensive approach and recruiting. TA has coached well over 100 all-conference and all-region hitters during his coaching career at CSS. In 2009, Anderson’s hitters led the nation in walks, while plac-ing second in doubles and doubles per game. The Saints were also in the top-25 nationally for runs, scoring and batting average.

Coach Anderson is described by his players as a “highly knowledgeable, hands-on coach.”

“While helping this program grow to such a successful level has been satisfying for me, our program is much more than just winning,” Anderson said. “Teaching our players how to be successful and responsible on and off the field and watching them grow into quality individuals that we can be proud of is the best part. I consider all of the players and alumni to be friends, and I’m proud to be affiliated with them and the baseball program at Scholastica.”

Justin Harriman, an Interna-tional Falls, Minnesota native is in his sixth year as an assistant at St. Scholastica. Justin, a former power-hitting catcher for the Saints, was the first player in the program’s history to be selected as a first-team All-American following his senior season in 2000.

Justin ranks in the top five of four different offensive categories at St. Scholastica; his 178 RBIs rank first, 243 hits and 56 doubles rank

second, and his 23 home runs rank third. He also holds the team’s record for longest hitting streak, recording a hit in 42 consecutive contests through his junior and senior seasons.

Just as notable as his offensive prowess, Justin is also regarded as the program’s top defensive catcher. He was inducted into the St. Scholastica Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001.

Following his graduation in 2000, Justin spent one year as an assistant coach before leaving Duluth. He returned to the area and the coaching staff in 2006. His primary duties include working with both catchers and hitters.

“This program is about so much more than baseball and the success we’ve achieved on the field,” Harriman said. “When I think of the life-long friendships our players, coaches and our baseball alumni have with each other, it is clear that what we are doing is very unique and special.”

Tom Berrisford is in his fourth season as an assistant coach for the Saints. A 1998 Duluth East gradu-ate, “TB” led the Greyhounds to the state tournament his senior year. He was selected to the St. Paul Pioneer Press All-State Team and was also chosen as the Duluth News Tribune Player of the Year.

While starting at third base his freshman season, TB helped the Saints advance to the Midwest Re-

gional of the Division III National Tournament. He earned the team’s Rookie of the Year honors following the conclu-sion of the 1999 season.

TB was a captain for the Saints during his senior season of 2002. He helped lead the Saints to a then-record 145 wins during his four years at St. Scholastica and was named Academic All-American twice.

Tom’s coaching responsibilities for the 2010 Saints will include coaching first base, working with the Saints infield-ers and defensive position during games.

“Each season brings a new level of excitement for me and for our baseball family,” Berrisford said. “Not only do

we have a chance to compete for a national championship year after year, but we continue to develop great players, great people and great relationships every time our team is together.”

Joe Wicklund, in his fourth sea-son as an assistant with the Saints, is a former team captain who led St. Scholastica to the NAIA Regional Championship in 2000. The Solon Springs, Wisconsin native started the opening game of the 2000 Super Regional and helped the Saints to the win with his strong pitching effort.

While in a Saints uniform as a player, “Wick” was a great leader

and exemplified all the quality characteristics of a great cap-tain. He was a two-time captain and three-time Academic All-American.

Wick’s responsibilities as a coach include working with the Saints pitching staff and coordinating the program’s recruiting. His leadership, attitude and love for the Saints baseball program, along with his job as a St. Scholastica Admissions Counselor, make him a valuable asset to the program as a recruiter. Wick also brings more than a de-cade of radio experience to the broadcasts of Saints Baseball on ESPN Radio 560-WEBC as the voice of the Saints.

“While our on-the-field success is incredibly fulfilling, seeing the student-athletes in our program growing during their time as Saints is even better,” Wicklund said. “Often times I am the first person these players meet through our recruiting efforts, and it is wonderful to be able to bring them and their families into our baseball family.”

Kenny Kolquist enters his first season as an assistant on the Saints baseball team in 2010. Kolquist has served as the color commentator for St. Scholastica radio broadcasts for the last three seasons on ESPN Radio 560-WEBC.

Kolquist played for St. Scholas-tica from 2002-2005, garnering all-UMAC honors three times and being named all-region in his senior season. Kolquist is regarded as one of the best captains and people to

ever be involved in the St. Scholastica baseball program, leading to his induction into the Hall of Fame in 2008.

“Returning to this program as a coach is one of the great-est honors I have ever received,” Kolquist said. “I look back on my time as a player as some of the best years of my life. Now to be able to give back to our baseball family as a coach and help our program reach new heights is just as exciting.”

Peter Burg also joins the St. Scholastica coaching staff in 2010 as an assistant. Burg, who was an All-American in 2008, anchored the Saints pitching staff during his two years at St. Scholastica with a career record of 19-1. He earned all-region and all-conference hon-ors both seasons, as well as being named the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference’s top pitcher.

Burg, a left-hander, who trans-ferred from Valparaiso to St. Scho-

lastica, will work with the Saints pitching staff and assist in recruiting.

“I’ve always said that St. Scholastica baseball is even more than what people might expect from a ‘D1’ program, so I feel blessed to begin my coaching career here,” Burg said. “I’m excited to continue to add to our rich tradition as a coach.”

^ Spring Trip | $ HHH Metrodome

The St. Scholastica Saints earned their fifth-straight trip to the NCAA Regional in 2009, and battled through three tough games before being ousted by Wis.-Stevens Point and eventual Regional champ, St Thomas – a disappointing finish to the emotional roller coaster that was the 2009 St. Scholastica baseball season. With the passing of head coach John Baggs at the beginning of last season, Corey Kemp and the Saints assistants stepped up and performed admirably, earning UMAC Coach of the Year honors as well as earning Kemp the job as the new head man at St. Scholastica going into this season.Whatever the circumstances, the 2010 season will be the dawning of a new era in Saints baseball under Coach Kemp’s lead, though retaining all of his fellow assistant coaches, it appears that some things will stay the same. One thing that absolutely did not change entering this season is the strong recruiting that has been performed by the Saints staff in recent years, as Kemp and his assistants have commitments from 16 freshman recruits and three transfers entering the 2010 campaign. The 19 players will join a group of 25 returners in hopes of replacing a talented group of eight 2009 graduates, including pitchers Adian Kummet, who was selected in the 31st round of the Major League draft, Peter Burg, and Jake Gaub, Dan Lanari, Jake Wendland, and Garret Groebner who combined for over 160 innings last season. The Saints also lost designated hitter Nick Lee, who posted a career-high .963 OPS (on-base plus slugging) in his senior campaign, and four-year starting shortstop Kyle Wojtysiak, a back-to-back winner of the team’s John Giefer Gold Glove award.Still, the Saints return six seniors and seven underclassmen who appeared in at least 24 games last season. Even graduating what they did, the Saints have many of their key players returning in 2010.Who’s Back?Starting at the top, the Saints return one of their best offensive players in each of the past three seasons in first baseman Sean Claugherty (Sr.-Oakdale, Minn.). Claugherty has a career batting average of .397 and a stunning OPS of 1.179. The former All-American has already cracked the Saints’ Top 10s in career batting, slugging, and home runs, and is just on the outside in runs scored. Catcher Paul Kolodge (Sr.-Cloquet, Minn.)

is coming off his first season as a full-time starter with the Saints and posted career-highs in literally every important offensive category. His .357 batting average in ’09 ranks fifth among returning players, and he’s no slouch behind the plate either, making just two fielding errors and throwing out eight of 18 attempted base-stealers.Third baseman Steve Gerten (Sr.-West St. Paul, Minn.) also returns to the diamond after an impressive junior campaign where he posted career-highs in batting average, slugging percentage, RBIs, and runs scored. Gerten also pitched 40 quality innings for the Saints, good for a 4.91 ERA and a 5-1 record. His pitching numbers were down from his career-best 2008 campaign, but he still struck out 30 batters and should see a return to form in 2010.Pitcher Jeff Adams (Sr.-Two Harbors, Minn.) has 28 career innings, primarily coming out of the bullpen for CSS. He earned two saves in 2009 while throwing for a 5.19 ERA and a 1-2 record in 17.1 innings. Super utility man Jordan Sandstrom (Sr.-Silver Bay, Minn.) has just 22 at-bats in his CSS career, but set a career-high in slugging percentage last year as well as hitting his first collegiate home run.The Saints junior class has proven to be one of the strongest, led by speedsters Joe Link (Jr.-Woodbury, Minn.), Andy Manos (Jr.-White Bear Lake, Minn.), and Brian Marshik (Arden Hills, Minn.). Link became the team’s starting center fielder in 2009 with a .952 fielding percentage as well as a .468 on-base percentage. He earned career-highs in batting average, RBIs, and slugging percentage while stealing 26 bases in 28 attempts. Marshik entrenched himself in the lead-off spot for much of the 2009 campaign, batting for a .431 average and a 1.198 OPS. He had 70 total bases including 15 doubles while scoring a career-high 46 runs and knocking in 31 as well. Manos started just 10 games last season, finding himself as a late-inning defensive replacement as well as an emotional leader for the Saints. He has a .270 career batting average and gets on-base at a .365 clip.Chad Peterson (Jr.-New Brighton, Minn.) primarily played second base in each of the last two seasons, but will likely make the move to shortstop with the loss of Wojtysiak. Peterson batted for a career-high .391 average in 2009 while also setting career highs in runs scored (39) and RBIs (32).

On the pitching side, the junior class continues to shine with starters Josh Retka (Jr.-Apple Valley, Minn.) and Matt Lewis (Jr.-Erie, Pa.) at the top. Retka threw 37 innings in 2009 for a 4-1 record, posting a 2.19 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. Lewis continued to be a steady pitcher for the Saints, earning almost the exact same ERA as his freshman campaign (2.43 as opposed to 2.45), and now has an 8-1 career record at CSS. Josh Hawkins (Jr.-Woodbury, Minn.) proved himself in the playoffs last season as he shut down Bethany Lutheran in the UMAC Championship while throwing a career-high 6.1 innings and allowing just five hits and no runs for his first career victory. The Saints’ pair of super-freshman outfielders from last season are also returning in Tom Juberian (So.-Park Rapids, Minn.) and Brandon Peterson (So.-Burnsville, Minn.). The duo each played in at least 32 games with Peterson starting 31 in the outfield. Peterson’s .393 batting average put him third on the team in 2009, and he knocked in 31 runs while

scoring 33 himself. Juberian finished the season with a .337 average and scored 27 runs with 30 RBIs and also swiped eight bases in 11 tries last year.Other key returners include pitcher Matt Mikel (Jr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn.), first baseman Griffin Bell (Jr.-Oconomowoc, Wis.), utility outfielder Brian Peterson (Jr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) and catcher Kyle Moody (So.-Maple Grove, Minn.). All should see their playing time increase in the new year.Who’s New?In short, the largest recruiting class in Saints baseball history is “who is new,” but the new Saints are not only impressive in their numbers but also in their abilities on the diamond.Transfers Scott Greening (Jr.-Antigo, Wis.) and Kyle Peterschick (Jr.-Randall, Minn.), both from Mesabi Community College, will be expected to make an impact immediately. Greening, an outfielder, led Mesabi with 43 hits and 39 RBIs while posting a .406 batting average. Peterschick, a left-handed pitcher, posted a team-high 39 strikeouts for the Norse in just 32 innings of work. The third transfer, Jake Casareto (International Falls, Minn.) came to CSS in the middle of the school year from North Dakota State. Casareto was an All-State selection at Falls High School. The incoming freshmen are loaded with state-tournament participants, all-state performers and a great deal of top local talent.Chris Anderson (Fr.-Minnetonka, Minn.) and Kyle Jensen (Fr.-Wyoming, Minn.) were both named to the Lions All-Star series for the state’s top seniors. Anderson, a third baseman from Hopkins, helped lead the Royals to both the high school and legion state tournaments this season. The power hitter also garnered national attention when he hit for the cycle in home runs over a four-at-bat, two-game span. Jensen, a right-handed pitcher and infielder, also led Forest Lake to a fourth-place finish at the Minnesota State Tournament. Fellow Forest Lake hurler Michael Swenson (Fr.-Scandia, Minn.) also joins Jensen in the Saints’ recruiting class. Swenson, a righty control artist, picked up a win in the state tournament and was also an all-conference selection. Brian Gosz (Fr.-Minneapolis, Minn.), a pitcher from DeLaSalle, also dominated at the AA Minnesota state tournament for the Islanders and earned All-Tournament honors for his performance. Totino-Grace’s Jordan O’Neill (Fr.-Blaine,

Minn.) rounds out the all-state awards as the infielder earned his second-consecutive all-conference nod and was named to the Minnesota State High School Baseball Coaches Association (MSHSBCA) All-State team. Mark Harber (Fr.-Austin, Minn.), a lefty pitcher and first baseman, from Austin earned all-Big 8 honors the last two seasons for the Packers. Matt Hanse (Fr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn.), who has been in the starting lineup for Simley High School since eighth grade, again garnered all-conference honors for his work on the mound and at shortstop. Kyle Flagstad (Fr.-Hinckley, Minn.) has started four seasons for Hinckley-Finlayson and garnered all-conference honors for the Jaguars. David Vogelgesang (Fr.-Hastings, Minn.) led his team as both the team’s ace pitcher and top hitting outfielder, including posting a no-hitter against White Bear Lake. Brian Houdek (Fr.-Mahtomedi, Minn.) is also regarded as one of the top all-around shortstops in the state. Joel Wuorio (Fr.-Two Harbors, Minn.), a right-handed pitcher, led the Agates to a record-breaking season from his position on the mound and was named to the Duluth News Tribune’s All-Area team. Jake Snyder (Fr.-Duluth, Minn.), a pitcher/first baseman from Central, and Tom Jezierski (Fr.-Cloquet, Minn.), a pitcher/utility player joined Wuorio on the Duluth News Tribune’s All-Area Team and the Twin Ports All-Area All-Star game. Tyler Olin (Fr.-Duluth, Minn.), a pitcher/third baseman from East, was also a member of the Duluth Area team for the local all-star series. The class is rounded out by right-handed pitcher Jake Nystrom (Fargo, N.D.), Fargo North High School’s top pitcher and Tanner Viola (Fr.-Silver Bay, Minn.), a right fielder.“Each one of these players has a chance to see considerable playing time right out of the blocks,” Kemp said. “They each bring something different to our team, but collectively they very well may be the most talented class we’ve ever brought into Saints baseball.”The new players will have to contribute early, as the Saints start the season with quite possibly the toughest part of their season, beginning in March at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. The ScheduleThe season opens with a pair of doubleheaders against MIAC schools on the turf at the Dome as the Saints take on Hamline and long-time

rival St. Thomas (Minn.). The Tommies ousted the Saints from the NCAA Regional last season, coming back in the late innings, so CSS will undoubtedly have revenge on their minds. From there, the Saints head south on their yearly Spring Trip to Ft. Pierce, Fla. The competition does not let up, as the Saints will face off with some of the toughest competition from the Northeast region of NCAA’s Division-III. Manhattanville and Centenary Colleges return to the schedule from last season, as the Saints were 3-0 against them two times in 2009. Rutgers-Camden returns to the schedule, as the Saints are 2-0 against the Raptors with victories in 2001 and 2002. The Saints will also take on the College of Mount St. Vincent in Florida, a team that CSS defeated 7-1 in their first meeting back in the 2006 season.Rounding out the Florida schedule will be Stockton College and a couple of region opponents: Central (Iowa) and Wis.-Superior. The last day of the Florida trip will be the most important as they play both the Yellowjackets and Central in Vero Beach. The Saints return North for another double-dip at the ’Dome, this time against Augsburg, a team who the Saints have not beaten (0-2 all-time), but also have not played since 2001. The conference schedule gets underway on April 2nd against Northwestern College, and the Saints’ home-opener falls Apr. 13th with a doubleheader against conference rival Northland College. The Saints will also head to Northfield, Minn. for two games against St. Olaf on the 12th and take on St Thomas one last time to close out the regular season on May 9. Year after year, the Saints’ schedule looks tougher and tougher, but CSS answers the call and comes away looking better than ever, and that is one thing that Coach Kemp and his staff do not plan on changing in 2010.

The College of St. Scholastica is regularly recognized as one of the finest colleges in the Midwest. The 2009 “America’s Best Colleges” survey by U.S. News & World Report magazine ranks St. Scholastica in “Tier 1” of Midwestern Universities– Master’s level. The magazine’s rankings are based upon criteria that include academic reputation, student retention, class sizes, student-faculty ratio and alumni support.

St. Scholastica provides intellectual and moral preparation for responsible living and meaningful work. The College was founded in 1912 in the Catholic intellectual tradition and is shaped by Benedictine values. With a vision of sending forth thoughtful leaders – graduates who are committed to serving and transforming the world – St. Scholastica is an academic community that offers “learning to touch the world.”

The College has programs in the liberal arts and sciences along with professional career fields, in addition to 19 varsity intercollegiate athletics programs and more than 60 extracurricular opportunities. St. Scholastica has graduated more than 13,000 alumni; 97 percent of St. Scholastica graduates are typically in career fields or graduate school within six months of graduation.

loCation:One of the most distinctive aspects of the College is its location. Found in scenic Duluth, Minnesota, St. Scholastica’s 186-acre campus overlooks Lake Superior from a wooded ridge in a tranquil residential area. You are minutes from the region’s best shopping areas and a downtown that features plenty of cultural excitement. There are great opportunities in terms of internships and career contacts, as well as extraordinary social and recreational activities.

Size and faCulty:If personal attention is what you want, this is the right place. With a total enrollment over 3,500, the student to teacher ratio is 13 to 1. If you take the opportunity, you can get to know your professors and they will get to know you – usually on a first-name basis. Collectively, the faculty members’ experiences, education and teaching positions have taken them through decades and around the globe. Now they’re all right here for you.

reSourCeS and faCilitieS:St. Scholastica has well-equipped classrooms, computer labs, laboratories, and learning resource centers. The science center is packed with laboratories that you won’t find at many, if any, other colleges. In addition, the College offers a number of study abroad and service learning opportunities. The acoustically superb Mitchell Auditorium hosts dozens of speakers, bands and other events throughout the school year. A Wellness Center, which opened in autumn 2004 and grew in size the summer of 2008 due to additions, houses a six-lane indoor running track, four multi-purpose courts, a climbing wall, aerobic room, state-of-the-art locker rooms, and a new weightlifting facility, as well as other features for ensuring a healthy lifestyle.

finanCial aid:Of course, college costs money. But the smart money thinks of this as an investment that will pay personal and financial dividends for a lifetime. Over 3,500 students currently enrolled at The College of St. Scholastica believe that the quality and benefits of their education outweigh the costs. Over 98 percent of full-time undergraduate students receive financial aid. In fact, the average annual award in 2009-10 was $19,000. Plus, there are literally hundreds of need and non-need based scholarships available.

CamPuS Community:Spend any length of time on this beautiful campus and you can’t help but notice how friendly everyone is. With countless things happening on and off campus, boredom is not a problem at St. Scholastica. From the city’s Lakewalk near the shores of Lake Superior to its Skyline Drive along the hilltops, and from the College’s Reif Recreation Center and new Wellness Center to its classic Tower Hall, the combination of Duluth and St. Scholastica creates an exciting place to attend college.

The College of St. Scholastica’s Athletics Department has the goal of becoming a nationally-known NCAA Div.-III sports program. This goal reflects our deeply held view that strong and successful sports teams benefit everyone associated with the College. The positive image generated by winning teams frequently is the first impression prospec-tive students and their families have of our school. Winning teams give alumni and current students a source of pride and “bragging rights.”It is our commitment to keep our athletics program the best in the league and competitive with the best in the country. Our teams will always be a positive reflection of St. Scholastica’s past, present and fu-ture. We have taken many steps to strengthen our foundation and we are prepared to move forward. One step is the Saints Athletics Club, an organization dedicated to connecting supporters of CSS sports with each other and with current student-athletes while also generating the resources needed to supplement the Athletics Department’s traditional budget. As the College grows, there will always be widespread need for additional resources. The success of the Saints Athletics Club will al-low the Athletics Department some degree of independence as we fund initiatives we consider essential for our future growth. If you would like to join or would like more information regarding the Saints Athletics Club please contact:

2009 ReviewIt was written a decade earlier; a simple vision statement, but not a simple vision.

The College of St. Scholastica will be the winningest baseball pro-gram of the new decade.

John Baggs gave the St. Scholastica baseball program this vision, but the 2009 Saints had no idea what they would have to over-come to achieve it. And that they would achieve it without their legendary head coach there to finalize the vision.

The challenges for the 2009 Saints started well before the first pitch of the season, as Baggs was diagnosed with cancer in Octo-ber of 2008. Without their head coach in attendance, the Saints logged an opening game victory in the Metrodome over Mount Marty in early February.

In the early morning hours of Feb. 24th, before the Saints second contest of the season, the team received the most devastating news in the program’s storied history. John Baggs, just 43 years old, had passed away. That evening, the Saints played one of their most emotionally-challenging games, earning a 6-3 win over the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

“It was both an easy and unanimous decision to play,” assistant coach Joe Wicklund said. “There was no better way for us to re-member Coach Baggs than to be together on the baseball field.”

The heavy-hearted Saints continued playing through as they coped with the loss of their leader, splitting a key doubleheader at the Metrodome with the University of St. Thomas the day after Baggs’ funeral.

Ranked 12th in the country, the Saints continued their winning ways during their annual spring trip to Fort Pierce, Florida. Be-hind the bat of first-team pre-season All-American selection Sean Claugherty and the 1-2 pitching punch of Adian Kummet and Peter Burg, the Saints posted a 8-1 mark in the Sunshine State.

Highlights from Florida included an opening-game combined shutout by senior hurlers Jake Gaub and Dan Lanari over Hiram. The Saints then locked horns with two-time NCAA National Tournament participant Penn-State Behrend in an exciting back-and-forth battle that resulted in a 13-12 St. Scholastica victory, the final run coming on a pinch-hit RBI-double by Brandon Peterson in his first collegiate at-bat. The lone loss came by a 4-3 mark to Ursinus, but the Saints rebounded to post an impressive sweep over Centenary to close out the trip. Burg and Lanari teamed up for a shutout in the first game, while Kummet struck out 14 over seven innings in the second contest.

Weather helped St. Scholastica to a two-week break to close out March, but it didn’t slow down the Saints’ bats when they returned to the field in early April. Five consecutive victories over Crown and Northland to open the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference schedule came by a combined score of 73-11 and moved St. Scho-lastica’s record to 16-2.

Sitting at No. 9 in the national polls, the Saints ran their winning streak to nine games with a sweep of top conference rival Bethany Lutheran on the road. The Saints grabbed the opening game 9-7, despite a furious comeback from the Vikings. Burg worked six sharp innings for the win, but Jeff Adams had to come in to slam the door with the tying run at the plate in the seventh. The second game was all Saints, as Paul Kolodge homered, Brandon Peterson drove in four runs and Adian Kummet picked up the 11-1 win.

Before returning to action at Wade Stadium, the Saints posted a three-game sweep at Morris and moved to No. 6 in the national polls. The Saints opened a 12-game home stand to fin-ish the regular season with a three-game sweep of Presentation. Kummet again sparkled, tossing an 8-0 shutout in the second contest. Presentation battled the Saints in the final game, but St. Scholastica pushed ahead for a 4-3 win as both Kolodge and Gaub drove in a pair of runs.

The Saints’ win streak ran all the way to 20 games following a doubleheader sweep of Northland and a rare tripleheader sweep of Northwestern. A four-hit game by Nick Lee and four additional three-hit games by Chad Peterson, Brian Marshik, Tom Juberian and Gaub paced the Saints’ offensive attack.

St. Scholastica, now ranked a program-best No. 3 in the country, posted its 30th win of the season in a 14-2 rout of Martin Luther. It marked the 11th consecutive season the Saints have reached the 30-win mark.

The following day proved to be an emotional up-and-down doubleheader for the Saints. It began with a ceremony retiring Baggs’ No. 33 jersey and the 2009 senior class unveiling a banner on the right field wall of Wade Stadium. With a crowd of more than 50 CSS baseball alums and several hundred fans, mostly adorned in No. 33 Baggs’ T-shirts, the Saints fell short against Martin Luther and lost 4-3. With a 3-0 lead, the Knights took ad-vantage of two key errors in the top of the sixth to plate four runs and take the lead. The Saints rallied, but stranded two runners on the bases in the bottom of the seventh to see their 21-game win streak come to a close. In response to the loss, the Saints turned around and posted a program-record 34 runs in a 34-1 thrashing of Martin Luther. Marshik finished with four hits and four RBIs, while Brian Peterson knocked in five runs. It was the second time in as many seasons that the Saints’ lone UMAC regular season blemish came at the hands of the Knights. St. Scholastica’s 19-1 record in the conference gave the Saints their 13th consecutive title in as many tries.

The Saints finished the regular season with a key contest against fellow top-ranked Midwest Region foe, St. Thomas. The two teams traded a trio of runs early, but St. Thomas was able to push across a run in the eighth inning to secure the 4-3 victory.

St. Scholastica opened its postseason run at home with the UMAC Tournament. After a 12-2 victory over Northwestern in their opening contest, the Saints dropped their first UMAC post-season game in the 12 years of the tournament. Leading 8-2 after six in-nings, it looked as though the No. 8-ranked Saints were going to cruise to the tournament’s title contest. But Burg, the team’s start-ing pitcher, faltered, allowing three runs in the seventh. Josh Retka

2009 Season Review

worked a scoreless 1.1 innings, but closer Adams was touched up by the Vikings’ bats for three runs in the top of the ninth inning to tie the contest at 8-all.

The Saints loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but were unable to plate a runner. BLC then plated two runs in the top of the tenth to take the lead. The Saints again loaded the bases in the bottom of the tenth with less than two outs, but were only able to post one run. The Saints stranded an unlucky 13 runners in the 10-9 extra-innings loss.

“After all we had been through in the season, it was especially painful to lose our first-ever game in the UMAC tournament,” Wicklund said. “What was most painful was that we truly beat ourselves, but we still had the ability to pull ourselves up and do what was needed to win the conference tournament title.”

Forced to win three games on the final day, the Saints respond-ed in inspirational fashion. It was the pitching of Matt Lewis that set the tone in the first game, another 12-2 victory over Northwestern. Lewis worked a complete game seven-hitter and was helped by Chad Peterson’s three RBIs.

The Saints then exploded on Bethany Lutheran for 16 runs in the first three innings of the first championship game. Kolodge led the way with four hits and seven RBIs, while both Marshik and Gerten added four hits and Kyle Wojtysiak knocked in four runs. When the 30-4 onslaught finally ended, the Saints had posted their 30 runs on 29 hits and 29 RBIs.

It was much closer in the winner-take-all second title game, but the Saints offense stayed red hot. Freshman Tom Juberian posted four hits and knocked in three, while Marshik had five RBIs. Behind the strength of a 10-run second inning, the Saints held off the Vikings behind the 6.1 innings of shutout relief thrown by sophomore Josh Hawkins.

The victory moved the Saints record to 35-5, gave the team its 12th straight postseason tournament title, and more important allowed CSS to earn an invite to its fifth consecutive NCAA National Tournament.

In a year filled with emotional highs and lows, it was fitting that the NCAA National Tournament be no different. The Saints claimed an opening-game victory over St. Norbert 7-6, but it took 11 innings to secure the win. It started with a leadoff homer from Marshik, but took four solid innings of relief from Josh Retka to finalize the one-run victory. Marshik and Chad Peterson each finished with three hits in the win.

The Saints then took on St. Thomas for the fourth time in the 2009 season, and for six innings it was all about Adian Kummet. The senior righty didn’t allow a hit to the eventual national cham-pions until the sixth inning with the Saints leading 2-0. Two more innings and two runs later had the Saints on top 4-0. After plating a single run in the seventh, the Tommies struck for seven runs in the eighth inning to upend the Saints 8-4. Six hits and one critical error in the eighth left the Saints stunned and pushed them into the loser’s bracket.

After being five outs away from a 2-0 record in the Midwest Re-gional, the Saints were unable to recover the following day against the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The two teams traded a pair of runs in the second, but the Pointers took advantage of another critical Saints’ error to plate five runs in the fourth and post a 9-3 win.

Following the close of the season, the awards and accolades began piling up for the St. Scholastica players. Adian Kummet was named second-team All-American in the ABCA and garnered honorable mention All-American honors from D3baseball.com. Kummet’s performances drew the attention of Major League Baseball, and the Brainerd native became the second Saint ever selected in the MLB draft when the Cincinnati Reds took him in the 31st round.

Kummet also earned first-team All-Region honors, along with first baseman Sean Claugherty. Burg was also named a second-team All-Region selection and Marshik earned honorable men-tion.

The Saints again dominated the UMAC awards, landing seven players on the first-team All-Conference list. Kummet, Burg, Claugherty and Marshik were joined by Kolodge, Wojtysiak and Steve Gerten. Gaub, Lee, Retka, Brandon Peterson, Chad Peterson and Joey Link were named honorable mention.

The coaching staff of Corey Kemp, Tim Anderson, Justin Harri-man, Tom Berrisford and Joe Wicklund was also given the confer-ence’s Coach-of-the-Year award after picking up the reigns after Baggs’ passing.

The Saints finished at or near the top in several categories when the season finally closed. The patient Saints batters led the coun-try in base on balls (265), while finishing second in total doubles (128) and doubles per game (2.98). The Saints also placed in the top ten in scoring, at 10.3 runs per game. The pitching staff posted a 3.09 ERA, which was fifth best in the NCAA Division III ranks. Finally, the Saints .837 winning percentage was third best.

But more important than any single season statistic from 2009, was the winning percentage it took ten years to amass. The Saints closed the 2009 season with a .814 winning percentage over the last decade, making St. Scholastica the winningest baseball pro-gram in the entire country.

“The 2009 team may not be the most talented team of the decade and may not have had the longest post-season run,” Wicklund said. “But they stood in the face of the greatest adversity in our program’s history and finished a job other Saints teams started a decade earlier.”

It was a simple vision statement, but it was so far from being a simple vision. The 2009 St. Scholastica Saints made sure that vi-sion came true, even if the man who first had it was not there to see it.

The Jerome Kruse Memorial Award was created in honor of Mr. Jerome Kruse, the long-time athletic director of Northwestern (Wis.) College and later Martin Luther College. Mr. Kruse’s life ended early, and the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) created the award to honor his dedication to the conference and its student-athletes. The annual award travels to the college that earns the most points, accumulated by the place-finishes of the college’s athletic teams in the final standings of the 16 conference-sponsored sports. In 2006 and 2007, St. Scholastica won back-to-back Kruse Awards, their first outright victory since 1998 and first overall since 2000. The Saints won eight regular season conference titles in 2006 and nine in ’07 to claim their second straight title. In 2008, the Saints fell just eight points short of their third straight Kruse Award while getting beat out by perennial contender Northwestern College. The 2009 school year saw the Saints claim ten of the 16 regular season conference championships – including all six of the Spring sports – but they were still edged out by Northwestern by just one half of a point. Northwestern was propelled to victory thanks to regular season championships in Volleyball, Football, and Women’s Golf and seven second-place finishes. The second-straight near-victory by the Saints is even more remarkable given the fact that CSS does not yet field teams in men’s or women’s golf, compromising the points formula. CSS will look for continued success in men’s and women’s soccer, women’s cross country, volleyball, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s track and field, men’s and women’s tennis, baseball, and softball – all of which won their regular season championship in 2008-09 as well as the emergence football and women’s basketball teams as they look for their sixth Jerome Kruse Award in 2010.

2009 nCaa reGional Oshkosh, Wis.As in years past, the Midwest regional proved to be one of the toughest in the NCAA Division III National Baseball Tournament. The tournament featured four nationally-ranked teams, including St. Scholastica at 10th in the D3baseball.com poll. The University of St. Thomas held off elimination and edged St. Olaf twice on the final day to advance to the World Series, which they would eventually win and claim their second national title.Game 1: St. Olaf 2, Beloit 1 (11)Game 2: St. Thomas 5, Wis.-Stevens Point 4 (17)Game 3: St. Scholastica 7, St. Norbert 6 (11)Paul Kolodge laced an 11th-inning RBI single through the left side of the infield to push the Saints past the Green Knights of St. Norbert. CSS jumped on the board first, as Brian Marshik smacked a leadoff homer to start the bottom of the first inning and the Saints added another run. Three more runs on a pair of St. Norbert errors in the fourth frame gave CSS a 5-0 advantage. A Saints fielding miscue resulted in four Green Knights runs in the top of the fifth. The two teams traded runs, but a solo homer by St. Norbert in the top of the ninth sent the game into extra innings. Peter Burg worked the first seven innings, allowing three earned runs, before Josh Retka relieved and picked up the extra-innings victory.Game 4: Wis.-Stevens Point 8, Beloit 2 - eliminatedGame 5: St. Olaf 8, St. Norbert 4 - eliminatedGame 6: St. Thomas 8, St. Scholastica 4For six dazzling innings Adian Kummet dominated the Tommies of St. Thomas and staked the Saints to a 3-0 lead. Kummet allowed just one hit over the first six frames, while the CSS bats scored a pair of runs in the opening inning and posted a single run in the sixth. The Saints extended the lead to 4-0 on a Kyle Wojtysiak steal of home during a double-steal opportunity with Chad Peterson. The Tommies finally touched Kummet for a single run in the seventh, before exploding for seven runs in the bottom of the eighth. Nick Lee finished with a pair of hits to pace the Saints.Game 7: St. Olaf 5, St. Thomas 2Game 8: Wis.-Stevens Point 9, St. Scholastica 3 - eliminatedMatched up against each other for the sixth time in the NCAA tournament since 1999, the Pointers were helped to victory by five unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The two teams traded a pair of runs in the second inning, the Saints taking advantage of a pair of Pointer defensive errors and receiving RBI hits from Chad Peterson and Tom Juberian. Game 9: St. Thomas 6, Wis.-Stevens Point 0 - eliminatedGame 10: St. Thomas 11, St. Olaf 2Game 11: St. Thomas 5, St. Olaf 0 - eliminated

The Saints bashed out 16 hits, including four by Eller and two each from Claugherty, Gerten, Link, Kyle Wojtysiak and Mike Lewis.Game 9: St. Scholastica 7, St. Thomas 1 - eliminatedThanks to the continued hot hitting of Blake Eller, CSS advanced to the championship game of the NCAA Div.-III Oshkosh Regional Baseball Tournament with a 7-1 victory over the University of St. Thomas (Minn.).Eller totaled three hits, four runs batted in and two runs scored to lead the Saints. He hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning and a run-scoring single in the eighth. Both pitchers threw complete games, with Steve Gerten tossing nine innings for his fifth win in as many decisions. He allowed one run on seven hits while striking out four batters.Game 10: Wis.-Whitewater 21, St. Scholastica 13 - eliminatedUW-Whitewater pummeled the scoreboard with multiple runs in seven of eight innings to defeat CSS, 21-13, in the championship game. CSS counted seven runs in the fifth inning, three in the seventh, two in the first and one in the fourth. The Saints came back to tie the contest with seven unearned runs in the top of the fifth inning. UW-Whitewater tacked on three more runs in the fifth inning to regain the lead. 2007 nCaa reGional Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.Traditionally regarded as the strongest Regional Tournament in the NCAA Div.-III National Baseball Tournament, the 2007 NCAA Regional became a bit of a one-man show in UW-Stevens Point’s Jordan Zimmermann. The Pointers rode Zimmermann’s arm and bat to the World Series, despite being hit hardest by the St. Scholastica Saints. Zimmermann went on to be selected in the second round of the MLB Draft in July.Game 1: Wis.-Stevens Point 11 – St. Scholastica 3For the third consecutive season, the Pointers and Saints locked horns in the opening contest of the NCAA Midwest Regional Tournament. The Saints defeated the Pointers and Jordan Zimmermann 4-3 in 2006, but UWSP had downed CSS 7-6 early in the 2007 regular season. The Pointers plated single runs in each of the first three innings against Saints senior starter Mark Moriarty. Moriarty worked five strong innings with seven strikeouts. CSS touched up Zimmermann and tied the game with a solo homerun by Kyle Wojtysiak in the third inning and a two-run blast by Mike Lewis in the fourth. The game remained knotted at 3-3 until the bottom of the seventh, when the Saints’ defense uncharacteristically collapsed. Eight unearned runs in two frames pushed the Pointers to the victory and only two of UWSP’s 11 runs were earned.Game 2: St. Thomas 5, Wis.-Oshkosh 1Game 3: Ripon 4, St. Olaf 1Game 4: Wis.-Oshkosh 11, St. Scholastica 5 - eliminatedThe Titans took advantage of the long ball and the short fences of Witter Field with a pair of two-run homers in the early innings. The Saints, trailing 6-0 and held to one hit through four innings, scored three runs but left the bases loaded in the fifth inning. Poor defensive play haunted the Saints again, as CSS committed four more errors. The 10-error total through two tournament games accounted for nearly 20% of the team’s errors all season long.Game 5: St. Olaf 7, Wis.-Stevens Point 3Game 6: St. Thomas 9, Ripon 3Game 7: Wis.-Stevens Point 11, Ripon 10 - eliminatedGame 8: Wis.-Oshkosh 5, St. Olaf 4 - eliminatedGame 9: Wis.-Stevens Point 6, St. Thomas 3Game 10: Wis.-Oshkosh 5, St. Thomas 4, (11) - eliminatedGame 11: Wis.-Stevens Point 6 – Wis.-Oshkosh 0

2006 nCaa reGional Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.In arguably the strongest Regional in the 2006 NCAA National Baseball Tournament, the Saints edged the hottest team entering the tournament (Wis.-Stevens Point) before dropping their next two contests. The Pointers battled back through the loser’s bracket to advance to the World Series. St. Scholastica, who finished the regular season ranked fourth in the polls was awarded the No. 4 seed.Game 1: St. Scholastica 4 – Wis.-Stevens Point 3For the second consecutive year, St. Scholastica defeated Wis.-Stevens Point in the first round of the NCAA Div.-III tournament as the Saints edged the Pointers 4-3. The Saints took advantage of limited opportunities against the Pointers’ pitcher Jordan Zimmermann, scoring four runs on just four hits without leaving a runner on base. After spotting the Pointers a run in the opening frame, St. Scholastica tied the score in the bottom of the first inning when Chad Weiss led off with his third home run of the season. Offense was hard to come by, as Saints starter Mark Moriarty matched Zimmerman pitch-for-pitch for over six innings. Kyle Wojtysiak gave the Saints the lead for good with a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth inning. Moriarty, who allowed two earned runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts was relieved by freshman closer Adian Kummet, who earned his third save of the season.Game 2: St. Olaf 17 – Dominican 8Game 3: Coe 5, St. Thomas 4 (10)Game 4: Ripon 14, St. Scholastica 8Thirteen hours after downing the Pointers in a game featuring great pitching and little offense, the Saints fell in a shootout against Ripon. The Saints jumped on the board early, with two runs in the top of the first, but the Red Hawks answered with four runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. A Brandon Swartz RBI in the top of the second trimmed the lead to 4-3 and took a 6-4 lead in the fourth, but Ripon notched three runs to take the lead in the bottom of the frame. The Saints battled back, but the Hawks stood strong, adding five runs in the eighth to secure victory.Game 5: St. Thomas 22 – Dominican 3 (eliminated)Game 6: St. Olaf 8 – Coe 2Game 7: St. Thomas 13 – St. Scholastica 3 (eliminated)The Saints took an early 1-0 lead on a Swartz sacrifice fly in the first inning, but St. Thomas turned around and hit two home runs for four runs in the second. 2005 nCaa reGional Whitewater, Wis.The Saints battled in perhaps one of the toughest Regionals of the 2005 NCAA National Baseball Tournament, beating the region’s top seed, but falling to the eventual National Champion.Game 1: Wis.-Whitewater 7 – St. Thomas 4Game 2: St. Scholastica 5 – Wis.-Stevens Point 3St. Scholastica senior pitcher Jake Eiler had a stellar outing against top-seeded Stevens Point, earning a complete-game win after surrendering three runs on seven hits while collecting 11 strikeouts without a walk. Sophomore Brandon Swartz’s three-run home run in the top of the 2nd put the Saints ahead 3-1. Tied 3-3 enterting the top of the 6th, back-to-back two-out singles put the Saints ahead as Kenny Kolqusit batted in Mike Lewis. Tom Simonson scored an insurance run after a D.J. Lahti single in the 7th. Eiler allowed two harmless singles and a total of three baserunners over the final five innings, striking out nine of the final 17 batters.Game 3: Wis.-Stevens Point 2 – St. Thomas 0, eliminatedGame 4: Wis.-Whitewater 6 – St. Scholastica 0Whitewater kept the Saints offense at bay as Ryan Bruns, Mike Lewis, and Kenny Kolquist collected the only hits in the game for St. Scholastica. The Warhawks used a trio of extra-base hits to break out to an early advantage. A solo home run in the 1st put Whitewater on top, then a double and a two-run homer in the 2nd opened up a 3-0 lead that the Saints were never able to chip into. Joey Calaguire took the loss, allowing five earned runs on seven hits, three strikeouts, and no walks.Game 5: Wis.-Stevens Point 18 – St. Scholastica 3, eliminatedThe Pointers jumped on the Saints for seven runs in the top of the 1st and never looked back. St. Scholastica put runners on base eight of nine innings and stranded 11 in the game. D.J. Lahti was 1-4 with an RBI for the Saints while sophomore pitcher Mark Moriarty (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season.Game 6:Wis.-Stevens Point 13 – Wis.-Whitewater 5Game 7: Wis.-Whitewater 7 – Wis.-Stevens Point 3

1999 nCaa reGional Oshkosh, Wis.The 1999 NCAA National Baseball Tournament began with eight regional tournaments, and by Friday, May 21, only 24 teams in the country remained. While several regionals featured close games, only the Midwest Regional featured three extra-inning games. In fact, all but one of the games in the Midwest were decided by one run, making it one of the most exciting regional tournaments in recent history.Game 1: Wis.-Oshkosh 6 – St. Scholastica 5 (11)The Saints, who entered the tournament with a record of 34-10, had the toughest draw in the country. The Titans, ranked No. 1 in the country with a record of 33-2, enjoyed home field advantage as the host school. Wis.-Oshkosh jumped to a 5-0 lead, but St. Scholastica cut the lead to 5-4 behind a two-run homer by Jeff Lahti in the 8th inning. The Saints’ Derek Bilben blasted his 25th career homer in the top of the 9th to tie the game at 5. In the bottom of the 11th, Titan All-American catcher Casey Kopitzke singled over a drawn-in outfield to give Kevin Grater the victory. Grater pitched all 11 innings to raise his career record to 22-2. The Saints’ Dave Schlangen matched Grater for 10 innings, but saw his record fall to 9-3.Game 2: St. Thomas 6 – Wis.-Stevens Point 0 Game 3: St. Scholastica 4 – Wis.-Stevens Point 3 (10), eliminatedSt. Scholastica junior catcher Justin Harriman homered with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning to beat the Pointers who entered the

tournament ranked 13th in the country with a record of 31-8. The Saints again rallied from behind when Chris LePine blasted a three-run double in the bottom of the 7th to tie the game at three apiece. Sophomore pitcher Corey Kemp pitched eight innings of six-hit relief to earn the win and raise his record to 6-2. Harriman and Joey Wood each had three hits for the Saints while Jeff Lahti and LePine each added two hits.Game 4: St. Thomas 3 – Wis.-Oshkosh 2Game 5: Wis.-Oshkosh 5 – St. Scholastica 4 (11), eliminatedFor the third consecutive NCAA tournament game, the Saints rallied from behind making their mark as a team that would never quit. Justin Harriman’s two-run single in the 5th inning capped a three-run rally and gave the Saints a 4-3 lead. The Titans tied the game in the bottom of the inning and the teams remained scoreless for six innings as Oshkosh’s Jack Taschner and the Saints’ Adam Barta settled in for a pticher’s duel. The Titan’’s Casey Kopitzke scored an unearned run in the bottom of the 11th to send Oshkosh to its 18th consecutive Regional Championship game. Chris LePine and Jeff Lahti each had two hits for the Saints and Kopitzke had two hits for Oshkosh. 2000 naia reGional/SuPer reGional Sioux City, Iowa.Following a record-setting regular season, the Saints breezed through the UMAC Tournament to earn a berth in the NAIA Region 3 Tournament held in Sioux City, Iowa. The Saints wasted no time showing why they were on a 20-game winning streak by winning the first two contests of the tournament by a combined score of 22-2. CSS topped Sioux Falls University 13-1 behind a complete-game performance from Joe Wicklund. Wicklund allowed only four hits while striking out seven and walking none. Josh Lamppa led the Saints past Huron University 9-1, tossing a seven-hitter with five strikeouts. Chris LePine had six hits and six runs in the two games and Leland Swenson knocked in six runs. The Saints then sent ace pitcher Corey Kemp to face perennial power Mayville State (N.D.) University. Kemp battled, allowing four earned runs while striking out seven in 7 1/3 innings. The Saints scored three runs in the bottom of the second to break a 1-1 tie, including a solo homer by Nick Bjerken. CSS scored four more runs in the fifth inning, three coming on a triple by Greg Young. Young finished the day 4-for-5 with three RBIs. Freshman Brett Nyquist finished off the 12-6 victory with 1 1/3 innings of perfect relief. “The thing that was nice to see against Mayville State was that our younger guys played so well,” Saints coach John Baggs said after the game. “We expect our seniors to be playing well, they’re at the end of their careers. But the younger kids have been outstanding; we had two sophomores and two freshmen who were 11-for-19.”Riding a school-record 23-game winning streak, the Saints faced No. 2 seed and tournament host Briar Cliff University. The Saints fell behind 9-0 early and were never able to regroup as the Chargers’ bats never cooled off in an 18-11 victory.Staring season-ending elimination in the face, the Saints did the obvious … they switched uniforms, to their favorite gold with pinstripes; a uniform combination they’d never lost in.The new-look Saints took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a single by Young, a triple by Swenson and a sacrifice fly by Derek Bilben. CSS scored four more in the fourth, highlighted by Bilben’s homer, to extend their lead to 10-3. St. Scholastica never looked back, winning 15-9. Bilben finished the day with four hits, a school-record eight RBIs and a prolific homerun.Freshman left-hander Nick Bjerken started and Nyquist pitched five innings of relief to get the win, allowing eight hits and three runs. Sophomore Dan Birkholz went the last two innings to earn the save.Following the regional championship, the Saints hosted former national champion Bellevue (Neb.) University in the Super Regional at Wade Stadium in a best-of-three series.1,420 fans were on hand to see the opening game, one of the most memorable in St. Scholastica athletics history.Bellevue built a four-run lead, scoring two runs in the second on catcher Kevin Bratetic’s two-run homer and two more in the sixth on designated

hitter Nate Lueder’s two-run double. The Bruins made it 7-3 when Saints’ relievers Josh Lamppa and Nyquist struggled, walking in two of three runs in relief of starter Wicklund. The Saints battled back with five runs in the top of the eighth inning to take an 8-7 lead. The Bruins tied the score with a run in their half of the eighth, and a scoreless ninth In the tenth, following a Bilben triple, Justin Harriman ripped an RBI single to plate the Saints’ ninth run. Bjerken then slashed a triple down the right-field line to knock in three more runs. The Saints added another run to push the lead to 13-8. CSS again gave the ball to Birkholz and he delivered, slamming the door on the Bruins in the bottom of the inning. Birkholz worked 2 1/3 innings to pick up the win, strking out four of the seven batters he faced. The tournament-tested Bruins toppled the Saints in the second game by a 14-7 score, forcing a third and deciding contest. With a record-breaking 1,630 fans on hand, the Saints took on the Bruins for the fifth time in the 2000 season. CSS fell behind 4-0 in the second inning, but ignited the crowd with a four-run rally in the top of the third. Swenson, Harriman, junior Joey Wood and Bjerken each hit RBI singles. But it was all the Saints could muster against Bellevue, as the Bruins posted two more runs in the third and six runs in the fifth. The 13-4 victory sent Bellevue (49-26) to their fourth-straight NAIA World Series and ended the Saints season at 41-11. “I don’t know what is harder; seeing the seniors lose this game after all the hard work they’ve put in over the last four years, or knowing that next year I won’t have Justin Harriman catching,” Baggs said to reporters following the game. “And I won’t have Leland Swenson starting at shortstop or Chris LePine in centerfield – or Joe Wicklund or Josh Lamppa in the pitching rotation. That’s what’s going to be tough. I’ll miss these seniors like no other class.”

Sfl: the SaintS fall leaGueThe St. Scholastica baseball program takes full advantage of the fall non-traditional season by playing a four-week schedule that in the past has included games against outside competition. The Saints have competed in national and regional fall tournaments and traveled to the Midwest Fall Classic in Terre Haute, Ind. (1998), the Collegiate Baseball Classic in Columbus, Ohio (1996, 1997, and 1999), and the Muskie Invitational (1995).The Saints practice drills and systems and play a 30-game intrasquad season during the SFL. The intrasquad league breaks the CSS squad into three complete teams - the Gold Hawks, the Black Sox, and the Blues. The games are umpired, statistics are totaled, pitchers are charted and velocities are measured via radar gun. The annual SFL World Series wraps up the fall season. Fall Baseball at CSS allows the team’s newcomers to adjust to the college level quickly in a highly competitive environment. Positional players may get 60 at-bats and pitchers may work as many as 25 innings.

In past years, the Saints have worked with Neighborhood Youth Services, the Grant School reading program, the Damiano Center, the Salvation Army, the food shelf, the animal shelter, West Duluth Boys Club, the homeless of Duluth, Loaves and Fishes, area churches, and the elementary school reading programs. The Saints have also prepared and served meals at the soup kitchen and assisted at the Duluth Playhouse.
