Jen Walter enters her 15th season as the head coach of the St. Scholastica softball program in 2014. The seven-time UMAC Coach of the Year has guided the Saints to 13 UMAC Regular Season titles the past 14 seasons and 11 UMAC Tournament Championships. CSS has made three NCAA Tournaments under Walter.

Walter has had 11 winning seasons, including six with 30-plus victories. In 2009, she became the second-fastest coach in CSS history to reach the 300-win milestone.

Under her tutelage, the Saints received their first national ranking in 2004 when they appeared in the NAIA poll and were ranked as high as No. 13. Upon entering NCAA Division III competition in 2005, the Saints took just over a year to appear in the national poll, peaking at No. 15, just missing out on an NCAA tournament berth despite going 34-7 overall. The Saints earned their first NCAA postseason bid in 2006 as the No. 5 seed in the Midwest Regional, where they earned Coach Walter’s 200th career victory. She was the quickest Saints coach to reach that milestone.

The Saints are 195-16 against UMAC opponents in Walter’s tenure. CSS has earned NAIA or NCAA postseason berths in eight seasons under Jen Walter, and won the NAIA regional in 2004 to earn the program’s first ever NAIA National Tournament berth.

“What I love most about coaching at St. Scholastica are the players,” says Walter. “In my 14 years here, I have met some great student-athletes who have excelled both on the field and in the classroom and continue to excel beyond St. Scholastica.”

Entering 2014, Walter has coached three All-Americans, including two-time first teamer Laura Heise (2004, 2006), second team honoree Rile Dawson (2007), and third team honoree Erica Kozacek (2003). Her players have earned 40 All-Region nominations, 90 All-Conference selections, and nine conference player of the year awards. Walter earned conference accolades for her coaching in 2001, ’02, ’03, and ’04, ’09, ’10 and 2012.

After graduating from Wadena High School as a two-time All-State softball honoree, Walter went to Golden Valley Lutheran College in Minneapolis where she was named a Junior College All-American catcher and then Augustana (S.D.) College where she earned All-Region honors. She graduated from Augustana in 1986 with a degree in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation.

In the summer of 2010, Walter was inducted into the Minnesota Fastpitch Coaches’ Association Hall of Fame as a player.

Before joining St. Scholastica in 2000, Walter was the assistant softball coach at Armstrong High School in Plymouth, Minn. and also served as head softball coach at Perham High School from 1989-91. She also coached basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, and cross-country at Breck School in Golden Valley, Minn. while also teaching lower and middle school physical education from 1991-97.

In December 2006, Walter earned Master Coach status from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. She continues to grow as an educator and a coach by participating in the Women Coaches Academy, co-sponsored by the Winstar Foundation and the NCAA. She also serves on the Midwest All-Region Selection Committee.

“I have the greatest job in the world,” says Walter. “I get to be around young women who have the desire to become great softball players and along the way become great people. There are tons of frustrations and challenges, but in the end, the rewards, on the field and off, are so worth it.”

Mya Gordon enters her fourth season on the CSS Softball staff in 2014. Gordon played for the Saints during the 2008 and 2009 seasons.

Rilee Dawson enters her seventh season on the softball staff in 2014 after a successful four-year playing career. In her final season at CSS, Dawson was named to the NFCA All-American Second Team. She was also the UMAC Player of the Year. While at St. Scholastica, Dawson started 100 games including 46 as a pitcher. She holds a career .349 batting average with 13 home runs and 91 RBIs, along with a 2.34 ERA, 34-14 win-loss record and 300 strikeouts in 299 innings. During one, three-game stretch her senior season, Dawson hit a NCAA record six consecutive home runs. As a coach in the Saints program, Dawson works primarily with the pitchers. She is also the recruiting coordinator and assists with the Saints winter camps. Dawson, an Eveleth native, graduated in the spring of 2008 with her Doctoral of Physical Therapy degree. She is currently working at St. Raphael’s Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Darcy Roach enters her first season on Coach Walter’s staff in 2014. Roach is coming off a pitching career for the Saints, which saw her finish with 37 career wins, tied for second-most in program history. She finished with 329 strikeouts in her career, which ranks third all-time. Her 19 wins in 2012 are the fifth-most in program history. The two-time All-UMAC selection was also named Academic All-UMAC twice and a NFCA Scholar-Athlete in 2013.

The Jerome Kruse Memorial Award was created in honor of Mr. Jerome Kruse, the long-time athletic director of Northwestern (Wis.) College and later Martin Luther College. Mr. Kruse’s life ended early, and the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) created the award to honor his dedication to the conference and its student-athletes. The annual award travels to the college that earns the most points, accumulated by the place-finishes of the college’s athletic teams in the final standings of the 17 conference-sponsored sports.

(1) Most amount of points = Kruse Award Winner (2) Points are determined by the number of teams participating in that particular sport. First place points will be given equivalent to the number of teams competing in that particular sport. Second place, third place, etc. in descending order.EXAMPLE If there are 8 teams competing = 1st place gets 8 points, 2nd place gets 7 points, 3rd place gets 6 points, etc.If there are 5 teams competing = 1st place gets 5 points, 2nd place gets 4 points, 3rd place gets 4 points, etc.(3) Provisionary schools and associate members are not eligible for Kruse Award and are not considered in awarding points for regular season finishes(4) If two or more teams tie for the same regular season finish spot, the point value for their corresponding finishes are added together and divided by the number of teams tied, which is then awarded to all of the tied teams.Example - If there is a two-way tie for first place, you would add 8+7 and then divide by 2 so that each team receives 7.5 points.

2013 INDUCTION CLASSDan Seeler – Men’s Soccer/Men’s Hockey – 1978-82Seeler initially came to St. Scholastica because of the hockey program, but decided to also play soccer when the team was introduced in 1978. He was named the team’s MVP three times and still holds the men’s soccer program record for most goals scored in a game when he netted five against UMD in 1979. Seeler is only one of four players to record 10 points in a game in program history. He ranks second all-time in career goals (56) and third in points (130). He recorded the first hat trick in program history, scoring three against Mount Senario College (Wis.) in 1978. He ranks fourth on the program list with 19 goals during the 1981 season. While he was scoring goals for the soccer team, he was preventing goals for the hockey team as a goaltender. Seeler was named the team’s MVP for the 1981-82 season.

Greg Cane – Men’s & Women’s Soccer Coach – 1985-93Cane was part of the St. Scholastica men’s and women’s soccer programs for 15 years, coaching both programs and also as a player. He played for the men’s team from 1979-82 and was a three-year starter as a defender. He was a captain his senior season. However, even before he played for the Saints, Cane was the equipment manager of the CSS Hockey team, beginning when he was 15 years old and until his sophomore year of college. After his playing days, Cane then stepped in the coaching box as an assistant from 1983-84 before becoming head coach of the men’s team for nine years from 1985-1993. Cane accumulated a record of 104-55-12 in nine seasons and led the Saints to the 1988 and 1989 National Small College Athletic Association (NSCAA) National Championships. He was named the NSCAA Coach of the Year in 1988. He had just one losing season in his nine years as the men’s coach. In 1990, Cane became the first-ever coach of the CSS Women’s Soccer program. He coached both the men’s and women’s programs from 1990-1993 before becoming the first head coach of the University of Minnesota-Duluth women’s soccer program in 1994.

Jill Tribble Koszarek – Women’s Soccer – 1992-95Tribble was recruited to St. Scholastica by fellow Hall of Fame inductee Greg Cane in 1992. Tribble finished her soccer career third on the scoring list with 146 points. She ranks third all-time in goals scored (55) and fourth in assists (36). Tribble had an historic 1995 season for the Saints, setting program records for points (73), goals (26) and assists (21) in a season. She was named the team’s Most Valuable Player that season in leading the Saints to the program’s first winning season and first NAIA Regional appearance. Tribble is just one of two players in program history to record at least 10 points in a contest when she recorded 10 against Viterbo University (Wis.) in 1995. She is also tied for the program record for assists in a game as she recorded four assists in back-to-back games during the 1995 season. Tribble earned the NAIA Scholar-Athlete Award in 1994.

Leland Swenson – Baseball – 1997-2000Swenson was the first CSS baseball player to a sign a professional contract with a Major League Baseball organization when he signed with the Texas Rangers. Swenson is dubbed “the greatest shortstop” in the baseball program’s history. He was named the team’s Rookie of the Year in 1997 and was a four-time first team All-UMAC selection. In 1999, he was named a NCAA Division III All-American and a first team All-Midwest Region choice. In 2000, Swenson was named the NAIA Region 3 Player of the Year and a second team NAIA All-American. Swenson was also named the UMAC Player of the Year in 2000. The two-time team gold glove recipient is tied for the program record for most hits (83) and holds the program record for RBIs (77) in a season, doing so in 2000. Swenson ranks fourth in program history in career hits (225) and fifth in runs scored (173). Swenson was part of the 1999 NCAA Division III Tournament squad and 2000 NAIA Super Regional Tournament team.

1999 Baseball TeamThe 1999 CSS baseball team put the program on the map. Led by late head coach John Baggs, the Saints qualified for its first NCAA Division III baseball tournament. CSS would play three extra inning games at the regional, two with top-ranked and host University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and another with 13th-ranked UW-Stevens Point. The Saints would fall twice to the No.1-ranked Titans, both in 11 innings, but defeated the Pointers for the program’s first NCAA Regional Tournament victory on a Justin Harriman walk-off home run in the 10th. The squad featured eight All-UMAC first team selections. Kevin Kuklinski was named the UMAC Player of the Year and Dave Schlangen was the UMAC Pitcher of the Year. Schlangen, Harriman and Leland Swenson were first team All-Midwest Region choices, while Swenson was also named an All-American. The pitching staff set a single season program record with a 1.97 earned run average, which ranked third in the nation. The staff also tied a then-NCAA record with 13 shutouts. The team’s .965 fielding percentage ranked second in the country.
