Chad Salmela enters his ninth season as the St. Scho-lastica men’s and women’s ski team’s head coach in 2014-15. Salmela has been the only coach in the CSS Nordic program’s young history. Salmela has placed the St. Scholastica Nordic Ski Pro-gram on the national stage, despite regularly competing against scholarship programs. In 2014, Paul Schommer became the program’s first All-American, placing eighth in the 20km freestyle. Between the men and the women, the Saints had a program-best eight All-Region performanc-es. The third place finish between the two programs at the region championships was an all-time best. The 2014 season also saw the women’s program earn its first team win and individual win at Mount Itasca. Sarah Allen took home the first individual win for the program. The women finished a program-best second at both the CCSA Championships and the NCAA Central Region Championships. In 2012-13, Salmela coached Jeremy Hecker to his second consecutive NCAA Championships appearance and Hecker also became the first men’s skier to earn first team All-Conference laurels in program history. Hecker was the only skier on the first or second teams that was from a non-scholarship program. The men’s squad finished a program-best second at the conference championships, beating out three scholar-ship programs. At the NCAA Region championships, the Saints finished a program-best third, beating out two scholarship programs. Salmela also guided the first female in program history to the NCAA Championships in 2013. Not only did Sharmila Ahmed qualify for nationals, but she also became the first female to earn all-conference honors in program history with a first team selection. In 2011-12, the men’s team registered its first individual win, podium, and team win in program history, as well as qualified two skiers to the NCAA Championships for the first time in program history, where Jeremy Hecker and Paul Schommer posted three top-20 finishes out of four

races in Bozeman, Mont. Sharmila Ahmed also chalked up the Saints first ever individual Junior National Cham-pionship title, winning the 10km mass start freestyle at Soldier Hollow, Utah, after a regular season in which the Saints women as a team, placed their highest team plac-ing in every event of the season but one. As a junior competitor, Salmela was one of the Midwest’s top junior cross country ski racers, then switched to the sport of biathlon at age 19. After eight years of competing nationally and internationally as a member of the United States Biathlon Team, he moved directly into the assis-tant coach position for the U.S. Biathlon Team in 1998, while finishing his college degree at Middlebury College in Vermont.

After graduation, Salmela built and coached a national junior development program for biathlon, managed the 2002 Olympic Games biathlon competitions in Salt Lake City, served as assistant coach and wax technician for the U.S. junior world championship biathlon team, coached cross country running at the Marshall School in Duluth, and announced ski events across the country and on television. Salmela was the biathlon color commentator for NBC’s coverage of 2006 Torino Olympics and added cross country skiing and Nordic combined to his duties at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. At the 2014 Sochi Olympics, Salmela was the analyst of the cross country ski events, biathlon and the cross country skiing portion of the Nordic Combined. Salmela became a household name for his exciting calls of the action.

Kate Tesch enters her fourth season as part of the Saints ski team coaching staff in 2014-15. She was a top-10 Wisconsin State Meet skier for Wausau West in Wisconsin, and a four-year varsity scholarship athlete at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay as a Nordic skier and soccer player. With husband and Saints assistant coach, Josh, Kate continues to race on skis with her dog, Pontus J, with whom she is a past U.S. skijoring champion. Tesch brings with her a wealth of coaching experience. She has been the varsity soccer coach at three Wisconsin High Schools; Pulaski (girls), New Berlin (boys and girls), and Superior (girls).

She is the Bryant Elementary School Principal in Superior.

Josh Tesch enters his sixth season as assistant ski coach in 2014-15. During the 2014 season, when head coach Chad Salmela was at the Sochi Olympics, Tesch filled in and led the women’s team to runner-up finishes at the CCSA Championships and the NCAA Central Region Championships. Tesch walked on as a skier at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and was the first of two Phoenix skiers in program history to qualify four consecutive seasons for the NCAA Skiing Championships. His highest finish at the NCAA Championships was 13th during the 2000 season. Tesch assisted current U.S. National Ski Team Development coach, Bryan Fish, at UWGB after graduating.

Tesch is a full-time faculty member at Lake Superior College.

Andre Watt begins his fifth season as assistant coach in 2014-15 after volunteering with the Saints from the team’s inception in 2007. Watt was a skiing prodigy, winning the Minnesota State High School meet as a sophomore for the Duluth East Greyhounds. As a junior competitor, he was one of the top skiers his age in the United States, finishing second to Kris Freeman at the USSA Junior Olympics as a J1. Watt trained under respected Russian coaches Nikolai and Antonina Anikin as an independent racer before moving onto the CXC Elite Team in 2005. Watt continues to train and race, splitting his time with the Saints coaching staff while racing for the Rossignol Marathon Team. His father, Adrian, was a 1968 US Olympic Team member in ski jumping. Watt is the store manager for Continental Ski and Bike in Duluth.

Mid-America’s gateway to the sea, Duluth’s harbor hosts ships from dozens of nations each year. Duluthians enjoy the beauty and sport of four seasons. In close proximity to the College are beaches, biking and jogging trails, ski resorts, cross-country ski trails, boating and fishing sites and rinks for skating, curling and hockey. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is close enough for week-end visits.

Duluth offers a wide variety of cultural activities as well. Each year the city’s auditorium hosts a long list of popular entertainers. The Minnesota Ballet, Duluth Playhouse, and Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra provide exciting year-round schedules. Duluth’s many historical attractions include Glensheen, a 39-room neo-Jacobean style mansion built on the Lake Superior shore, the St. Louis County Heritage and Arts Center, and the Marine Museum at Canal Park.

Duluth’s low crime rate, high quality of life and natural beauty frequently earn it high rankings in “best places to live” surveys. Recently, the nonprofit American Institute for Economic Research ranked Duluth one of America’s best small metropolitan areas for college students.

In June 2014, Duluth was voted “America’s Best Outdoor City” by Outside Magazine

ABoUTThe Central Collegiate Ski Association (CCSA) is the premier collegiate cross country skiing conference in the United States, consistently producing podium finishes at both the U.S. National Championships as well as the NCAA National Championships. In the past five seasons at the NCAA Nationals, the CCSA has won three gold medals and four silvers, and produced over three dozen NCAA All Americans.

The CCSA is comprised of one division I team, four division II teams, and three division III teams. CCSA competitors race head-to-head with some of the best skiers in North America, as the CCSA/NCAA qualifying events are combined with the NorAm SuperTour FIS races. The season culminates with the CCSA Regional Championships in mid-February. The top individuals, based on US Nationals, four SuperTour FIS races and Regionals, compete in the NCAA National Championships in March.

Shea to lead the institution’s first varsity athletics program, Men’s Hockey. Genereau, a former Duluth Cathedral High School Coach who was retired prior to taking the St. Scholastica gig, quickly built up the men’s hockey program into prominence. He guided the Saints to the 1975 NAIA Men’s Hockey National Championships and a 1976 runner-up finish. He was 72-36-3 in four seasons as head coach. Genereau continued as Athletic Director through the 1977 school year. Genereau was inducted into the Minnesota Hockey Coaches Hall of Fame in 2003. Genereau passed away in 1988.

Randy Norgard – Men’s Hockey – 1973-77Norgard was part of two NAIA Men’s Hockey National Championship squads in his time at CSS. A defenseman from Duluth Central High School, Norgard was named a NAIA All-American in 1977 and a three-time All-Tournament team selection. The three-time All-Conference choice was named the team’s MVP for the program’s second championship run in 1976-77 and was also a two-year captain.

She was the team’s Most Valuable Runner all three seasons and became the first to win the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Individual Title in 1996. Fleck was a recipient of the 1996-97 CSS Female Athlete of the Year award.

Neil Runbeck – Men’s Soccer – 1998-2002Runbeck was the men’s soccer program’s career leader in points for over a decade until it was broke last fall by Joe Watt. Runbeck’s 157-point total is currently second overall. He led the team in scoring all four seasons. He holds the record for most shots in a game (14) and is tied for most assists in a game (4). His 20 goals and 15 assists during the 2001 season both rank in the top five.
