Jen WALTER, Head Coach, 11th SeasonIn her 10 seasons as Head Softball Coach at St. Scholastica, Walter has brought stability and a tradition of winning to the Saints program. Having won 20 or more games in eight of her 10 seasons and 30 or more games in five seasons the program is well on its way to becoming a force in NCAA Division III softball. “What I love most about coaching at St. Scholastica are the players,” said Walter. “In my ten years here I have met some great student-athletes who have excelled both on the field and in the classroom and continue to excel beyond St. Scholastica.” Under Walter, the Saints received their first national ranking in 2004 when they appeared in the NAIA poll and were ranked as high as No. 13. It took them just over a year to appear in the NCAA Division III poll where they peaked at No. 15 and ended the season ranked No. 21.The Saints had won eight consecutive Upper Midwest Athletic Conference championships under Walter with a combined record of 67-3, before finishing third in 2008. They have reached either the NAIA or NCAA post season in six of her 10 seasons. During the 2004 season the Saints won the regional tournament, earning a bid to the NAIA National Tournament for the first time in school history. In 2005 the Saints were 34-7 overall in their first season of NCAA Division III play but failed to receive a bid to the post-season. During the 2006 season the Saints earned their first NCAA post-season bid as the #5 seed at the Midwest Regional where they went 1-2. Their lone win was Walter’s 200th career victory. Walter became the quickest Saints coach to reach that milestone and is currently the winningest coach in Saints softball history with a .646 (275-151) winning percentage.Walter has coached three All-Americans, including two-time first teamer Laura Heise (2004, 2006), second team honoree, Rilee Dawson (2007), and third team honoree Erica Kozacek (2006). Her players have earned 32 All-Region and 47 All-Conference first team honors, as well as seven conference player of the year awards. In 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2009 she was named UMAC Coach of the Year.

Walter graduated from Wadena High School where she was a two-time All-State softball player. Following high school, she went to Golden Valley Lutheran College in Minneapolis where she was a JUCO All-American catcher and then went on to be an All-Region catcher at Augustana (SD) College. She graduated from Augustana in 1986 with a degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation.Prior to St. Scholastica, Walter was the assistant softball coach for three years at Armstrong High School in Plymouth, Minn. From 1991 to 1997 she coached basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, and cross-country along with teaching lower and middle school physical education at Breck School in Golden Valley, Minnesota. She also served as Head Softball Coach at Perham High School from 1989-91.Walter continues to grow as an educator and coach. In December 2006, she earned Master Coach status from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). She also participated in the Women Coaches Academy, co-sponsored by the Winstar Foundation and the NCAA. Walter currently serves on the Midwest All-Region Selection Committee.“I have the greatest job in the world. I get to be around young women who have the desire to become great softball players and along the way become great people. There are tons of frustrations and challenges, but in the end, the rewards, on the field and off, are so worth it.”

The St. Scholastica softball team is com-ing off one of its most prolific offensive seasons to date. The Saints scored a team record 351 runs and had a program-best .373 batting average and .561 slugging percentage.

On top of that, the Saints captured their 12th Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season championship and 13th UMAC Postseason title. CSS did not lose a conference game all season with its closest contest a 1-0 victory at Northland College.

The Saints are not only poised to win the conference outright once again in 2010, but they are also gunning for an NCAA Tournament bid.

The Saints finished the season hot last year, winning 26 of their last 28 games, including wins over 2008 NCAA National Champion UW-Eau Claire and 2009 third-place finisher Gustavus Adolphus.

According to head coach Jen Walter, this year’s squad is one of the deepest teams she has had at St. Scholastica. Walter believes she can go five pitchers deep in her rota-tion with all bringing something different to the table.

There is a lot of optimism surrounding the CSS softball program with a talented recruiting class and 10 returning players from last year’s squad, including second team all-region selections Kristin Swartz (Sr.-Hermantown, Minn.) and Theresa Tauer (So.-Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata). Plus, first team All-UMAC pitchers Jen Falk (Jr.-Altona, Man.) and Kayla Jenkins (Jr.-Esko, Minn.) also return.

Who’s Back

The Saints return 10 players from last year’s 31-12 squad.

The Saints will be led by 2009 UMAC Player of the Year Kristin Swartz. The senior second baseman finished second in the conference with seven triples, and was second on the team with six home runs and 37 RBIs last season. In conference play, she posted a .525 batting average and had 32 hits. Swartz also made just five errors in 114 chances at second base. She was named to the All-UMAC Defensive team for the third straight year.

Joining Swartz in the middle infield will be senior shortstop Erika Solin (Sr.-Duluth, Minn./Central). In her first full season at the position last year, Solin was steady as she led the team with 81 assists and fielded a team-high four double plays.

Solin was also patient at the plate as she drew a team-high 19 walks and was fourth on the team with a .441 on-base percent-age.

Also back in the infield is sophomore Theresa Tauer. Tauer had a phenomenal freshman campaign as she was first team All-UMAC selection and led the confer-ence with a .487 batting average, 47 RBIs, nine home runs, and 100 total bases. Her .870 slugging percentage and her 47 RBIs are the fourth and third-most, respectively, in a season in CSS history. Tauer joined Swartz in being selected to the Louis-ville Slugger/NFCA All-Midwest Region second team. Tauer, who predominantly played third base last season for the Saints, may see more action at first base this season.

The Saints return five outfield-ers from last year’s team. Sophomore Merryssa Tiedeman (So.-Zumbrota, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa) saw the major-ity of action playing in 40 games, including 34 starts. Tiedeman finished the season on a high-note by driving in seven runs at the UMAC Tournament and belting two home runs in the championship game. Junior Betsy Wehseler (Jr.-Ironton, Minn./Crosby-Ironton) started 16 games last season and batted .357 at the plate. Sophomore Kali Carlson (So.-Duluth, Minn./Central) start-ed in 10 games last season. Even though she started in just 10 games, Carlson got a lot of experience, playing in 29 games.

Junior Jenn Shaw (Jr.-Northfield, Minn.) and sophomore Sam Quenette (So.-Spoon-er, Wis.) also return and will be in search of more playing time in 2010. Shaw has split time the last two seasons pitching and in the field. In her freshman season, Shaw pitched a perfect game against Crown College.

Speaking of perfect games, junior Jen Falk had one of the more dominating per-formances of 2009 as she struck out 14 of 15 Northwestern batters that she faced to complete perfection. Falk did not join the team until after its spring trip last season, due to her obligations to hockey. That won’t be the case this season as Falk will be with the team the entire season. Falk went 15-3 last season and led the UMAC with a 2.20 earned run average, a .183 opposing batting average, and was second with 136 strikeouts. At one point during the season, Falk did not allow a run in 32.1 consecu-tive innings.

Joining Falk on the rubber is junior Kayla Jenkins. Jenkins finished the season

strong last year winning 12 of her last 13 decisions. Jenkins is the perfect compli-ment to Falk as she uses more finesse than power. Jenkins finished second in the conference with a 2.25 earned run average and .275 opposing batting average. She was second in the UMAC with 109 innings pitched and 20 starts in 2009.

Who’s New

In what Coach Walter describes as the deepest recruiting class since 2002, the Saints have added pitching depth and needs at catcher. Many of the newcomers are versatile and add depth for the Saints as a whole. This year’s class includes seven incoming freshmen and two junior college transfers.

The two transfers are Rachel Perushek (Jr.-Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert) from Mesabi Range Community College and Brittni Johnson (Jr.-Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) from Northland Commu-nity College. Perushek will play at third base, while Johnson will be a utility player.

Leading the incoming freshmen are a pair of All-State players in catcher Bonnie Kowalczyk (Fr.-Menomonee Falls, Wis.) and pitcher Darcy Roach (Fr.-East Grand Forks, Minn./Sacred Heart).

Kowalczyk, a native of Menomonee Falls, Wis., was a second team All-State choice this spring. She led the Indians to a state tournament appearance and was named to the 2009 Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association (WFSCA) All-Star Team.

Roach, a native of East Grand Forks, was also a second team All-State selection this spring. She was an academic All-State choice and was named to the 2009 Min-nesota All-Star series.

Another pitcher, Shannen Schmidt (Fr.-De Pere, Wis.), was a first team all-confer-ence selection in 2008 and a second team choice this past season.

Other incoming freshmen include catch-ers Jenny Marinaro (Fr.-Nashwauk, Minn./Nashwauk-Keewatin) and Leah Hettwer (Fr.-Andover, Minn./St. Francis), third baseman Jannon Stewart-Garcia (Fr.-Min-neapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle), and outfielder Allison Spiering (Fr.-Mounds View, Minn./Irondale). Marinaro was an all-area selec-tion this spring and Stewart-Garcia made all-conference in 2008 and 2009.

Schedule

Once again the Saints will play one of the tougher non-conference schedules in the country. The season gets underway Febru-ary 16th just like last year in Rosemount, Minn. against UW-Stout. The Saints then won’t play again until their Spring Trip, which is in Tucson, Ariz. this year. In Arizona, the Saints will have eight of their 10 games against regional opponents. CSS will face UW-La Crosse three times on its spring trip.

Upon returning to the Midwest, the Saints will take part in the Coe College Invitational. There the Saints will open with 2009 National Runner-up and host Coe College. Also in Iowa, the Saints get into UMAC action and will have their home opener April 6th when they host Northland College at Kenwood Field. CSS steps back out of conference on April 12th when it travels to Ashland, Wis. and faces 2008 National Champion UW-Eau Claire at Northland College.

This year St. Scholastica will host the UMAC Crossover at both Kenwood Field and Junction Avenue Field on the campus of Minn.-Duluth on April 30th and May 1st. All eight teams will be involved with a total of eight games being played each day.

The Saints will conclude their regular season on May 3rd when faces Gustavus Adolphus in a non-conference double-

header in Minneapolis at the University of Minnesota’s Jane Sage Cowles Stadium. Gustavus finished third nationally in 2009.

The UMAC Postseason Tournament will take place in Aberdeen, S.D., hosted by Presentation College. The tournament will take place May 7th and 8th.

The College of St. Scholastica is regularly recognized as one of the finest colleges in the Midwest. The 2009 “America’s Best Colleges” survey by U.S. News & World Report magazine ranks St. Scholastica in “Tier 1” of Midwestern Universities– Master’s level. The magazine’s rankings are based upon criteria that include academic reputation, student retention, class sizes, student-faculty ratio and alumni support.

St. Scholastica provides intellectual and moral preparation for responsible living and meaningful work. The College was founded in 1912 in the Catholic intellectual tradition and is shaped by Benedictine values. With a vision of sending forth thoughtful leaders – graduates who are committed to serving and transforming the world – St. Scholastica is an academic community that offers “learning to touch the world.”

The College has programs in the liberal arts and sciences along with professional career fields, in addition to 19 varsity intercollegiate athletics programs and more than 60 extracurricular opportunities. St. Scholastica has graduated more than 13,000 alumni; 97 percent of St. Scholastica graduates are typically in career fields or graduate school within six months of graduation.

loCation:One of the most distinctive aspects of the College is its location. Found in scenic Duluth, Minnesota, St. Scholastica’s 186-acre campus overlooks Lake Superior from a wooded ridge in a tranquil residential area. You are minutes from the region’s best shopping areas and a downtown that features plenty of cultural excitement. There are great opportunities in terms of internships and career contacts, as well as extraordinary social and recreational activities.

sizE and FaCulty:If personal attention is what you want, this is the right place. With a total enrollment over 3,500, the student to teacher ratio is 13 to 1. If you take the opportunity, you can get to know your professors and they will get to know you – usually on a first-name basis. Collectively, the faculty members’ experiences, education and teaching positions have taken them through decades and around the globe. Now they’re all right here for you.

rEsourCEs and FaCilitiEs:St. Scholastica has well-equipped classrooms, computer labs, laboratories, and learning resource centers. The science center is packed with laboratories that you won’t find at many, if any, other colleges. In addition, the College offers a number of study abroad and service learning opportunities. The acoustically superb Mitchell Auditorium hosts dozens of speakers, bands and other events throughout the school year. A Wellness Center, which opened in autumn 2004 and grew in size the summer of 2008 due to additions, houses a six-lane indoor running track, four multi-purpose courts, a climbing wall, aerobic room, state-of-the-art locker rooms, and a new weightlifting facility, as well as other features for ensuring a healthy lifestyle.

FinanCial aid:Of course, college costs money. But the smart money thinks of this as an investment that will pay personal and financial dividends for a lifetime. Over 3,500 students currently enrolled at The College of St. Scholastica believe that the quality and benefits of their education outweigh the costs. Over 98 percent of full-time undergraduate students receive financial aid. In fact, the average annual award in 2009-10 was $19,000. Plus, there are literally hundreds of need and non-need based scholarships available.

CaMPus CoMMunity:Spend any length of time on this beautiful campus and you can’t help but notice how friendly everyone is. With countless things happening on and off campus, boredom is not a problem at St. Scholastica. From the city’s Lakewalk near the shores of Lake Superior to its Skyline Drive along the hilltops, and from the College’s Reif Recreation Center and new Wellness Center to its classic Tower Hall, the combination of Duluth and St. Scholastica creates an exciting place to attend college.

The College of St. Scholastica’s Athletics Department has the goal of becoming a nationally-known NCAA Division III sports program. This goal reflects our deeply held view that strong and successful sports teams benefit everyone associated with the College. The positive image generated by winning teams frequently is the first impression prospec-tive students and their families have of our school. Winning teams give alumni and current students a source of pride and “bragging rights.”It is our commitment to keep our athletics program the best in the league and competitive with the best in the country. Our teams will always be a positive reflection of St. Scholastica’s past, present and fu-ture. We have taken many steps to strengthen our foundation and we are prepared to move forward. One step is the Saints Athletics Club, an organization dedicated to connecting supporters of CSS sports with each other and with current student-athletes while also generating the resources needed to supplement the Athletics Department’s traditional budget. As the College grows, there will always be widespread need for additional resources. The success of the Saints Athletics Club will al-low the Athletics Department some degree of independence as we fund initiatives we consider essential for our future growth. If you would like to join or would like more information regarding the Saints Athletics Club please contact:

The Jerome Kruse Memorial Award was created in honor of Mr. Jerome Kruse, the long-time athletic director of Northwestern (Wis.) College and later Martin Luther College. Mr. Kruse’s life ended early, and the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) created the award to honor his dedication to the conference and its student-athletes. The annual award travels to the college that earns the most points, accumulated by the place-finishes of the college’s athletic teams in the final standings of the 16 conference-sponsored sports. In 2006 and 2007, St. Scholastica won back-to-back Kruse Awards, their first outright victory since 1998 and first overall since 2000. The Saints won eight regular season conference titles in 2006 and nine in ’07 to claim their second straight title. In 2008, the Saints fell just eight points short of their third straight Kruse Award while getting beat out by perennial contender Northwestern College. The 2009 school year saw the Saints claim ten of the 16 regular season conference championships – including all six of the Spring sports – but they were still edged out by Northwestern by just one half of a point. Northwestern was propelled to victory thanks to regular season championships in Volleyball, Football, and Women’s Golf and seven second-place finishes. The second-straight near-victory by the Saints is even more remarkable given the fact that CSS does not yet field teams in men’s or women’s golf, compromising the points formula. CSS will look for continued success in men’s and women’s soccer, women’s cross country, volleyball, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s track and field, men’s and women’s tennis, baseball, and softball – all of which won their regular season championship in 2008-09 as well as the emergence football and women’s basketball teams as they look for their sixth Jerome Kruse Award in 2010.

If defense wins championships, it was lost on the St. Scholastica Saints softball team in 2009. Not because their .946 team fielding percentage wasn’t the best in the league or because their 2.43 combined ERA was over two runs lower than their nearest competitor. No, the reason why defense became secondary to the 2009 UMAC Regular Season and Postseason Champions was because they showed off one of the most prolific offenses that have come through St. Scholastica in quite some time.Led by 2009 UMAC Player of the Year and NFCA All-Midwest Regional Selection Kristin Swartz (Hermantown, Minn.), the Saints pummeled opponents for 351 runs, the most ever in UMAC Coach of the Year Jen Walter’s tenure with the team.Swartz, who started all 43 games for the Saints in her junior season, scored 36 runs while knocking in 37 and slugging .725 with six home runs. She also played a superior second base for CSS, with a .956 fielding percentage in over 100 chances. Swartz was named to the UMAC All-Defensive team for her third straight season.Joining her on the 2009 All-Conference first team was a pair of freshman players who also had outstanding seasons for CSS. Theresa Tauer (Plymouth, Minn.) led the Saints in nearly every offensive statistical category, with a .487 batting average, 56 hits, nine home runs, 47 runs batted in, and a massive .870 slugging percentage while earning her own NFCA All-Midwest Regional Selection. She played in nearly ever game for CSS, with 42 starts. Brynn Wollak (Hugo, Minn.) started 27 games and scored 31 runs and knocked in 35. She also led everyday players in on-base percentage at .534 and slugging percentage at .895. Also named to the All-UMAC team were the Saints’ pair of sophomore starting pitchers, Kayla Jenkins (Esko, Minn.) and newcomer Jen Falk (Altona, Man.) Jenkins earned the honor for the second straight year while posting a 2.27 ERA and a 14-7 record for CSS. In her 108 innings, she struck out 62 batters and allowed opponents to hit just .277 against her. Falk had just a 2.15 ERA in 2009 and allowed less than one base runner per inning (0.96 WHIP) in her 104 innings. She also struck out 135 batters and allowed opponents a slim .182 BAA. Two additional Saints were named All-UMAC Honorable Mentions for their contributions to Scholastica’s stellar offense. 2008 All-Region Second Team selection Michaela Carlson (Alexandria, Minn.) had another outstanding offensive season with a .433 batting average and a .993 OPS (on-base plus slugging), and fellow outfielder and senior captain Chelsey Weiss (Brainerd, Minn.) scored 37 runs while getting on-base at a .426 clip out of the lead-off position. She also stole 18 bases in 2009.After starting the 2008 season winless through twelve games, the Saints won five of their first seven games before embarking on their Spring Trip to Irving, Texas. Inclement weather forced the team’s six games to be played in the team’s final two days and they struggled, being dealt three shutouts by Nebraska Wesleyan (two) and Colorado College. After falling to 5-10 upon their return to the northern Midwest, the Saints finally got back on the winning track with a 29-1 victory over conference opponent Crown College. They then reeled off nine straight victories before splitting a doubleheader with Wis.-Eau Claire, a team that CSS had not defeated since the 2006 season.

The Saints began their winning streak anew with their win against the Blugolds, surpassing their previous streak with 14 straight victories. The streak was highlighted by Jen Falk’s 8-0 perfect game victory against Northwestern College on April 21 and three games in which the Saints dropped at least 20 runs on their UMAC opponents. The Saints lost their final game of the regular season against Gustavus Adolphus, but it did not matter as their perfect 21-0 record against conference opponents made them the top-seed in the UMAC Tournament. They again proved why they were tops in the conference by sweeping the tournament, defeating Minn.-Morris, Northland, and Northwestern by a combined 23-6 score, while allowing just 12 hits in the two games. Freshman Merryssa Tiedeman (Zumbrota, Minn.) played like a veteran in the tournament, going seven-for-nine with three homers and seven RBIs.With the conclusion of an outstanding season, the Saints had to say farewell to four seniors. Weiss, who finished 2009 with a .412 OBP as a three-year starter in centerfield for the Saints, had 141 hits and 44 walks while striking out just 74 times in over 400 plate appearances in her career. She was also named to the UMAC All-Defensive Team in 2007.Mary Jo McNamee (Escanaba, Mich.) was a two-way player for the Saints, pitching for a 13-12 record with a 3.95 ERA over 33 appearances. While her time on the mound decreased this season, she was an invaluable member of the Saints rotation in 2008, pitching over 100 innings with a 3.92 ERA. On the offensive side, she had her best season in 2009 while batting .349 to bring her career BA to .255.Robin Lake (Tamarack, Minn.) played first base and catcher over her career for the Saints, providing an impressive .403 OBP and .308 BA over her career, but she truly shined in 2009, scoring a career-high 23 runs while knocking in 16 and slugging .514.Despite playing just two seasons for Coach Walter, Mya Gordon (Duluth, Minn.) knocked in 21 runs and scored 33 in her career while posting a .310 career batting average. She also slugged .389 with five doubles in 2009.Thanks to the leadership of their veterans, the young Saints team now has plenty of experience – as well as UMAC Regular and Postseason Championships – and reason to be excited about the future.

MISSION - The St. Scholastica softball program will be known for teaching the fundamental skills of softball and developing players to their highest potential who are students of the game. We will produce players, who embrace their role in the continued development of the Saints softball program and who will continue to give back to the game of softball beyond their collegiate years.

Who We Are:

A Saints post game and practice handshake is more than just a simple, insignificant hand slap. It is a firm handshake, along with a look in the eye and a meaningful “good game.” Our handshake has become a symbol of the St. Scholastica Softball Program. To all Saints players and alumni the handshake signifies our respect for the game, our op-ponents and each other. It is an acknowledgment that we are thank-ful for the opportunity to compete in the greatest game in the world.
