Chad Salmela enters his eighth season as the St. Scholastica men’s and women’s ski team’s head coach in 2013-14. Salmela has been the only coach in the CSS Nordic program’s young history.

In 2012-13, Salmela coached Jeremy Hecker to his second con-secutive NCAA Championships appearance and Hecker finished a program-best 11th in the freestyle, finishing one spot shy of All-American honors. Hecker also became the first men’s skier to earn first team All-Conference laurels in program history. Hecker was the only skier on the first or second teams that was from a non-scholarship program.

The men’s squad finished a program-best second at the confer-ence championships, beating out three scholarship programs. At the NCAA Region championships, the Saints finished a program-best third, beating out two scholarship programs.

Salmela also guided the first female in program history to the NCAA Championships in 2013. Not only did Sharmila Ahmed qualify for nationals, but she also became the first female to earn all-conference honors in program history with a first team selection.

In 2011-12, the team registered its first individual win, podium, and team win in program history, as well as qualified two skiers to the NCAA Championships for the first time in program his-tory, where Jeremy Hecker and Paul Schommer posted three top-20 finishes out of four races in Bozeman, Mont. Sharmila Ahmed also chalked up the Saints first ever individual Junior National Championship title, winning the 10km mass start freestyle at Soldier Hollow, Utah, after a regular season in which the Saints women as a team, placed their highest team placing in every event of the season but one.

As a junior competitor, Salmela was one of the Midwest’s top junior cross country ski racers, then switched to the sport of bi-athlon at age 19. After eight years of competing nationally and internationally as a member of the United States Biathlon Team, he moved directly into the assistant coach position for the U.S. Biathlon Team in 1998, while finishing his college degree at Middlebury College in Vermont.

After graduation, Salmela built and coached a national junior development program for biathlon, managed the 2002 Olym-pic Games biathlon competitions in Salt Lake City, served as assistant coach and wax technician for the U.S. junior world championship biathlon team, coached cross country running at the Marshall School in Duluth, and announced ski events across the country and on television.

Salmela was the biathlon color commentator for NBC’s cover-age of 2006 Torino Olympics and added cross country skiing and Nordic combined to his duties at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

Kate Tesch enters her third season as part of the Saints ski team coaching staff in 2013-14. She was a top-10 Wisconsin State Meet skier for Wausau West in Wisconsin, and a four-year varsity scholarship athlete at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay as a Nordic skier and soccer player. With husband and Saints assistant coach, Josh, Kate continues to race on skis with her dog, Pontus J, with whom she is the reigning U.S. skijoring champion.

Tesch brings with her a wealth of coaching experience. She has been the varsity soccer coach at three Wisconsin High Schools; Pulaski (girls), New Berlin (boys and girls), and Superior (girls).

She is the Bryant Elementary School Principal in Superior.

Josh Tesch enters his fifth season as assistant ski coach in 2013-14. Tesch walked on as a skier at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and was the first of two Phoenix skiers in program history to qualify four consecutive seasons for the NCAA Skiing Championships. His highest finish at the NCAA Championships was 13th during the 2000 season. Tesch assisted current CXC Elite Team coach, Bryan Fish, at UWGB after graduating and has continued to assist Fish from time to time for CXC.

Tesch is a full-time faculty member at Lake Superior College.

Andre Watt begins his fourth season as assistant coach in 2013-14 after volunteering with the Saints from the team’s inception in 2007. Watt was a skiing prodigy, winning the Minnesota State High School meet as a sophomore for the Duluth East Greyhounds.

As a junior competitor, he was one of the top skiers his age in the United States, finishing second to Kris Freeman at the USSA Junior Olympics as a J1. Watt trained under respected Russian coaches Nikolai and Antonina Anikin as an independent racer before moving onto the CXC Elite Team in 2005. Watt continues to train and race, splitting his time with the Saints coaching staff while racing for the Rossignol Marathon Team. His father, Adrian, was a 1968 US Olympic Team member in ski jumping.

Watt is the store manager for Continental Ski and Bike in Duluth.

ABoUTThe Central Collegiate Ski Association (CCSA) is the premier collegiate cross country skiing conference in the United States, consistently producing podium finishes at both the U.S. National Championships as well as the NCAA National Championships. In the past five seasons at the NCAA Nationals, the CCSA has won three gold medals and four silvers, and produced over three dozen NCAA All Americans.

The CCSA is comprised of one division I team, four division II teams, and three division III teams. CCSA competitors race head-to-head with some of the best skiers in North America, as the CCSA/NCAA qualifying events are combined with the NorAm SuperTour FIS races. The season culminates with the CCSA Regional Championships in mid-February. The top individuals, based on US Nationals, four SuperTour FIS races and Regionals, compete in the NCAA National Championships in March.

2013 INDUCTIoN CLASSDan Seeler – Men’s Soccer/Men’s Hockey – 1978-82Seeler initially came to St. Scholastica because of the hockey program, but decided to also play soccer when the team was introduced in 1978. He was named the team’s MVP three times and still holds the men’s soccer program record for most goals scored in a game when he netted five against UMD in 1979. Seeler is only one of four players to record 10 points in a game in program history. He ranks second all-time in career goals (56) and third in points (130). He recorded the first hat trick in program history, scoring three against Mount Senario College (Wis.) in 1978. He ranks fourth on the program list with 19 goals during the 1981 season. While he was scoring goals for the soccer team, he was preventing goals for the hockey team as a goaltender. Seeler was named the team’s MVP for the 1981-82 season.

Greg Cane – Men’s & Women’s Soccer Coach – 1985-93Cane was part of the St. Scholastica men’s and women’s soccer programs for 15 years, coaching both programs and also as a player. He played for the men’s team from 1979-82 and was a three-year starter as a defender. He was a captain his senior season. However, even before he played for the Saints, Cane was the equipment manager of the CSS Hockey team, beginning when he was 15 years old and until his sophomore year of college. After his playing days, Cane then stepped in the coaching box as an assistant from 1983-84 before becoming head coach of the men’s team for nine years from 1985-1993. Cane accumulated a record of 104-55-12 in nine seasons and led the Saints to the 1988 and 1989 National Small College Athletic Association (NSCAA) National Championships. He was named the NSCAA Coach of the Year in 1988. He had just one losing season in his nine years as the men’s coach. In 1990, Cane became the first-ever coach of the CSS Women’s Soccer program. He coached both the men’s and women’s programs from 1990-1993 before becoming the first head coach of the University of Minnesota-Duluth women’s soccer program in 1994.

Jill Tribble Koszarek – Women’s Soccer – 1992-95Tribble was recruited to St. Scholastica by fellow Hall of Fame inductee Greg Cane in 1992. Tribble finished her soccer career third on the scoring list with 146 points. She ranks third all-time in goals scored (55) and fourth in assists (36). Tribble had an historic 1995 season for the Saints, setting program records for points (73), goals (26) and assists (21) in a season. She was named the team’s Most Valuable Player that season in leading the Saints to the program’s first winning season and first NAIA Regional appearance. Tribble is just one of two players in program history to record at least 10 points in a contest when she recorded 10 against Viterbo University (Wis.) in 1995. She is also tied for the program record for assists in a game as she recorded four assists in back-to-back games during the 1995 season. Tribble earned the NAIA Scholar-Athlete Award in 1994.

Leland Swenson – Baseball – 1997-2000Swenson was the first CSS baseball player to a sign a professional contract with a Major League Baseball organization when he signed with the Texas Rangers. Swenson is dubbed “the greatest shortstop” in the baseball program’s history. He was named the team’s Rookie of the Year in 1997 and was a four-time first team All-UMAC selection. In 1999, he was named a NCAA Division III All-American and a first team All-Midwest Region choice. In 2000, Swenson was named the NAIA Region 3 Player of the Year and a second team NAIA All-American. Swenson was also named the UMAC Player of the Year in 2000. The two-time team gold glove recipient is tied for the program record for most hits (83) and holds the program record for RBIs (77) in a season, doing so in 2000. Swenson ranks fourth in program history in career hits (225) and fifth in runs scored (173). Swenson was part of the 1999 NCAA Division III Tournament squad and 2000 NAIA Super Regional Tournament team.

1999 Baseball TeamThe 1999 CSS baseball team put the program on the map. Led by late head coach John Baggs, the Saints qualified for its first NCAA Division III baseball tournament. CSS would play three extra inning games at the regional, two with top-ranked and host University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and another with 13th-ranked UW-Stevens Point. The Saints would fall twice to the No.1-ranked Titans, both in 11 innings, but defeated the Pointers for the program’s first NCAA Regional Tournament victory on a Justin Harriman walk-off home run in the 10th. The squad featured eight All-UMAC first team selections. Kevin Kuklinski was named the UMAC Player of the Year and Dave Schlangen was the UMAC Pitcher of the Year. Schlangen, Harriman and Leland Swenson were first team All-Midwest Region choices, while Swenson was also named an All-American. The pitching staff set a single season program record with a 1.97 earned run average, which ranked third in the nation. The staff also tied a then-NCAA record with 13 shutouts. The team’s .965 fielding percentage ranked second in the country.
