Wells Patten begins his 19th season as St. Scholastica’s head men’s and women’s tennis coach in 2015.

Patten and the Saints men competed in the NAIA Regional Tournament each of Patten’s first 10 years with the team, taking first in 2001 and being tournament runners-up six of the remaining nine years. The Saints women made four NAIA National Championship appearances (1999, 2002, 2004, 2006), and have made three NCAA Division III National Tournament appearances (2007, 2008, 2009).

Under Patten’s direction, the Saints men’s tennis team has won 18 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference regular season titles and has earned 14 UMAC Tournament championships. In addition, the team has compiled a record of 125-2 against UMAC opponents for a .984 win percentage in conference play. Since 2004, Patten has produced 51 All-UMAC athletes including six individuals who have been named UMAC Player of the Year. Patten is a 13-time recipient of the UMAC Men’s Coach of the Year honor, claiming the award in each of the last six seasons. On the women’s side, the team is 120-1 in regular season play against UMAC competition under Patten since 1997. Patten’s Saints have won 17 UMAC regular season and tournament titles. Coach Patten has produced nine UMAC Player of the Year athletes in the past 11 years in Emily Jackola, Steph Miettenun, Stephanie Sparby, Jessica Rich, Paula Beckermann, Ploy Suthijindawong, Katie Motley, Callee Conda and most recently Hillary Bungarden. In 2009, the Saints captured their first NCAA Division III Tournament victory with a 5-2 triumph over Luther College. Caring for athletes is part of our bigger commitment to the community. Essentia Health

donates more than $600,000 of our sports medicine services to the region’s schools each year.

We are the official team physicians to the Duluth Huskies, UMD, UWS, Hibbing Community College,

and The College of St. Scholastica. We’re medical directors for Grandma’s Marathon, the NorthShore

Inline Marathon and company physicians for the Minnesota Ballet. And we’re certified athletic

trainers for high school athletes at Duluth Central, Duluth East, Esko, Hayward, Hermantown,

Hibbing, Marshall, Northwestern, Proctor and Superior.

To us, that’s what sharing expert orthopaedic care is all about.

Tom has been at The College of St. Scholastica since August 2002 and is presently working with Football and Baseball. He also has worked on call for SMDC (St. Mary’s Hospital-Duluth). Mid-America’s gateway to the sea, Duluth’s harbor hosts ships from dozens of nations each year. Duluthians enjoy the beauty and sport of four seasons. In close proximity to the College are beaches, biking and jogging trails, ski resorts, cross-country ski trails, boating and fishing sites and rinks for skating, curling and hockey. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is close enough for week-end visits.

Duluth offers a wide variety of cultural activities as well. Each year the city’s auditorium hosts a long list of popular entertainers. The Minnesota Ballet, Duluth Playhouse, and Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra provide exciting year-round schedules. Duluth’s many historical attractions include Glensheen, a 39-room neo-Jacobean style mansion built on the Lake Superior shore, the St. Louis County Heritage and Arts Center, and the Marine Museum at Canal Park.

Duluth’s low crime rate, high quality of life and natural beauty frequently earn it high rankings in “best places to live” surveys. Recently, the nonprofit American Institute for Economic Research ranked Duluth one of America’s best small metropolitan areas for college students.

In June 2014, Duluth was voted “America’s Best Outdoor City” by Outside Magazine

The Jerome Kruse Memorial Award was created in honor of Mr. Jerome Kruse, the long-time athletic director of Northwestern (Wis.) College and later Martin Luther College. Mr. Kruse’s life ended early, and the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) created the award to honor his dedication to the conference and its student-athletes. The annual award travels to the college that earns the most points, accumulated by the place-finishes of the college’s athletic teams in the final standings of the 17 conference-sponsored sports.

(1) Most amount of points = Kruse Award Winner (2) Points are determined by the number of teams participating in that particular sport. First place points will be given equivalent to the number of teams competing in that particular sport. Second place, third place, etc. in descending order.EXAMPLE If there are 8 teams competing = 1st place gets 8 points, 2nd place gets 7 points, 3rd place gets 6 points, etc.If there are 5 teams competing = 1st place gets 5 points, 2nd place gets 4 points, 3rd place gets 4 points, etc.(3) Provisionary schools and associate members are not eligible for Kruse Award and are not considered in awarding points for regular season finishes(4) If two or more teams tie for the same regular season finish spot, the point value for their corresponding finishes are added together and divided by the number of teams tied, which is then awarded to all of the tied teams.Example - If there is a two-way tie for first place, you would add 8+7 and then divide by 2 so that each team receives 7.5 points.

2014 INDUCTION CLASSDel Genereau – Men’s Hockey Coach/Athletic Director – 1972-1977Genereau was hired by fellow St. Scholastica Athletics Hall of Famer President Father Francis X. Shea to lead the institution’s first varsity athletics program, Men’s Hockey. Genereau, a former Duluth Cathedral High School Coach who was retired prior to taking the St. Scholastica gig, quickly built up the men’s hockey program into prominence. He guided the Saints to the 1975 NAIA Men’s Hockey National Championships and a 1976 runner-up finish. He was 72-36-3 in four seasons as head coach. Genereau continued as Athletic Director through the 1977 school year. Genereau was inducted into the Minnesota Hockey Coaches Hall of Fame in 2003. Genereau passed away in 1988.

Randy Norgard – Men’s Hockey – 1973-77Norgard was part of two NAIA Men’s Hockey National Championship squads in his time at CSS. A defenseman from Duluth Central High School, Norgard was named a NAIA All-American in 1977 and a three-time All-Tournament team selection. The three-time All-Conference choice was named the team’s MVP for the program’s second championship run in 1976-77 and was also a two-year captain.

Jeanne Fleck – Women’s Cross Country – 1994-96Fleck was the first CSS runner to individually qualify for a national meet multiple times as she competed in three NAIA National Championship events. Fleck first competed on the CSS cross country team as a 29-year-old sophomore. She was the team’s Most Valuable Runner all three seasons and became the first to win the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Individual Title in 1996. Fleck was a recipient of the 1996-97 CSS Female Athlete of the Year award.

Jen Quale – Women’s Basketball – 1996-2000Quale was a two-time NAIA First Team All-Region selection in 1997 and 1998. She currently ranks second all-time in the St. Scholastica Women’s Basketball program with 1,574 career points.
