Th e Detroit Titan men’s soccer team

fi nished the 2010 season with an overall

record of 8-9-2. Th e main emphasis for

this year’s club will be to push the win

total to 10. “We are looking to record 10

wins this season,” Head Coach Nicholas

Deren explained. “I believe it’s realistic

and it will be looked at as one of our key

goals for the upcoming season.”

Winning 10 games in 2011 isn’t out of the

question due to the solid mix of players

that will be returning to Detroit. A highly

skilled senior class will lead the Titans in

hopes of reaching, and advancing in the

Horizon League Tournament.

“Another goal that I have come to expect

for this team is to fi nish in the top third

of the Horizon League,” Deren added. “I

think that can be done with the players

that we have. It is something that we

must address as one of our main goals for

the season.”

Th e Titans reached the Horizon League

Tournament in 2010, yet they were

narrowly defeated at Cleveland State by

the fi nal score of 2-1 in the fi rst round.

“Anything can happen in the playoff s,”

Deren said. “If we can play well during

the regular season and get a good seed,

then it is possible to be successful in the

Horizon League Tournament. Th at will

lead us to our ultimate goal which is to

receive an NCAA bid.”

Th e 2011 schedule is similar to last year’s

version. Aside from the Horizon League

teams that appear year in and year out,

the Titans will face Michigan, Bowling

Green, Western Michigan, and Oakland

for the second straight year. One game

that is sure to catch the attention of Titan

fans will be the season opener against

Michigan State. Th e Titans have not

faced the Spartans since 1999.

Th e home opener for 2011 will be

played on Sept. 4. Detroit will host the

Buff alo Bulls at 1:00 p.m. on Titan Field.

Additional marquee matchups that will

be played on Titan Field include games

against the Michigan Wolverines (Sept.

14) and the Butler Bulldogs (Oct. 29).

“I’m excited about the 2011 season for

many reasons,” Deren explained. “First

of all this team has a lot of experience.

We have seniors that have been here

before, and they have performed at a high

level over the last couple of years. Th ey

have proved to me that they will be able

to lead our team.”

Leading the off ensive attack for Detroit

will be seniors Ya Ya Toure, Otieno Victor,

and Sam Seppo. Toure put together a

fantastic junior season and therefore was

honored as the 2010 Horizon League

Newcomer of the Year. He led the team

with nine goals and he recorded two

assists giving him a team-high 20 points

on the year. Toure was recognized by his

peers as he was a First Team All-Horizon

League selection. “Hopefully Ya Ya can

score goals for us like he did last year,”

Deren said. “He might actually be able to

bring that goal total up a little bit, which

would be excellent for us.”

Otieno Victor is a former team MVP

that had his 2010 campaign cut down to

10 games due to a season-ending injury.

“It is going to be great to have Victor

back healthy for us this year,” Deren said.

Although he missed some playing time,

Victor managed to score two goals and

record two assists during the 2010 season.

Th e fi nal member of this trio only started

in six games last season yet he came up

with six goals, three of which were game

winners. “You can’t leave out Sam Seppo

when talking about the senior class,”

Deren said. “Seppo was our second-

leading goal scorer last year and I think

he is going to do even more this year.”

Nate Robinson is another senior that

gets the off ense moving for Detroit.

Robinson was third on the team a year

ago with three assists. “We will look for

Nate Robinson to get on the scoreboard

a bit more this year,” Deren added. “Th at

would be a tremendous help to the team.”

Th e Titans will have a two-time team

captain in charge of the defense as Mike

Chiandussi returns for his senior season.

“Mike is very important to this team,”

Deren explained. “He will be the leader

of our back line.”

Pat Lepera and Kevin Pinkos highlight

the junior class. Each player started in

17 games, and each recorded seven points

for the Titans a year ago. Lepera was

second on the team with fi ve assists while

also scoring one goal, while Pinkos found

the back of the net three times while

recording one assist.

Moustafa Bazzi, Jeremy Stoychoff , Chris

Kobayashi, Tom Allott, Joey Krizanek,

and Schoolcraft College transfer Tevin

Wynter round out the group of juniors.

Matt Nedwicki and Adam Philp are

listed as seniors due to their academic

status, yet they have junior eligibility.

Nedwicki chose not to play during the

2009 season, and Philp was granted a

medical redshirt after only appearing in

the fi rst six games of the season in 2010.

A majority of the sophomore class made

an impact on the team as freshmen.

Adam Bedell, Patrick Soltys, Kevin

Gill, and Mike Pugh all played in at

least 10 games in 2010. Bedell was the

team leader in assists with eight. He

moved into a tie for 10th place all-time

at Detroit for assists in a single-season.

Pugh scored one goal as a freshman while

Soltys and Gill spent a majority of their

time on the defensive side of the fi eld.

“Our sophomores and juniors have been

here and this is just another year for them

to solidify themselves into the lineup and

take our team to the next level,” Deren

said. “Th ey will be working with the

freshmen and showing them the path

that they have been through.”

A large freshmen class will join the men’s

soccer program with a chance to earn

playing time. “I think our youth will be

an asset for us this year,” Deren said. “We

have some freshmen that I am expecting

to get big minutes out of this year. Th ey

will have the chance to make an impact

on this team.”

Th e freshmen class is a mix of athletes

that will play midfi eld or defense. A

goalie was also brought in with a chance

to win the job.

Th ere will be an open competition for

playing time as the Titan goalkeeper this

year. Th ree players will be in the mix as

junior Martin Robertson enters 2011

with the most experience. Robertson

played in fi ve games with four starts

in 2010. He ended the year with 24

saves, and held a save percentage of

.706. Robertson was in goal for the

overtime thriller against Michigan in the

season opener, and he helped Detroit tie

Cincinnati the following game.

Sophomore Anthony Shepherd also got

some playing time last year as he was

able to start two games for Detroit. A

freshman is also in the mix to see minutes

at goalkeeper as Nathan Steinwascher

will get a chance to prove himself.

“Overall I would say that we have

a good group of players, and more

importantly just a good group of kids,”

Deren explained. “I think their heads are

screwed on straight and I think they have

the right mind frame coming into the

season. Expectations are high this year

for the men’s soccer team.”Junior - #9 Kevin Pinkos

Nicholas Deren guided the 2010 Titans to an overall record of 8-9-2 in his fi rst full season at the helm of the men’s soccer team. After six seasons as the lead assistant coach, Nicholas Deren was named head coach at his alma mater, the University of Detroit Mercy, on Dec. 8, 2009.

After the resignation of former head coach Morris Lupenec, Deren took over as the interim head coach for the remainder of the 2009 season. He guided the Titans to a 4-4 record to end the year. During that stretch the Titans scored 17 goals, and won two of their last four conference games.

Deren continued to fi nd success in 2010 as the club fi nished fi fth in the Horizon League standings with a record of 4-4. After a rocky start the Titans won their fi rst game of the year over Duquesne on Sept. 18 by the fi nal score of 3-2. Detroit kept the momentum rolling as they went 5-2-1 during the month of October.

Detroit improved from 5-12-1 overall in 2009 to a fi ve-seed in the Horizon League Tournament. Th e Titans faced Cleveland State in the fi rst round which created an intriguing matchup as Detroit defeated the Vikings 2-0 during the regular season at Titan Field. After 90 minutes of non-stop action, the Vikings escaped with a 2-1 win putting an end to the season for Detroit.

Deren’s coaching style allowed Ya Ya Toure to receive multiple postseason awards. Toure was a First Team All-Horizon League selection, he made the HL All-Newcomer Team, and he was voted as the Horizon League Newcomer of the Year. His fi nal accolade was being selected as a Th ird Team All-Great Lakes Region player.

Deren’s fi rst season as an assistant coach was in 2004. Th e team was very successful during his fi rst two years with the program. Th e 2004 team tied the school record with 14 wins. Th ey were able to rattle off eight straight wins, another UDM record. Th e 2005 team fi nished close behind managing 12 victories on the year. Deren has worked with numerous recruiting camps across the state of Michigan. He left the corporate world to follow his passion in soccer, and started coaching club soccer in 2001 with the Vardar Soccer Club. Nearly a year later, Deren created a soccer school and provided training for individuals, small groups, and teams as a camp director. Deren has attended multiple symposiums, and special topic courses. He worked with the Troy Soccer Club from 2003 to 2006, and he was also on the Olympic Development Program coaching staff for the state of Michigan for four years (2005-09). Deren still works as a Director of Coaching for the Michigan Rush. He began working with the Rush in 2006.

“I’ve always enjoyed working with young players because I feel like a part of their technical foundation,” Deren said. “I believe that coaches can have a big impact on young players. A positive infl uence can play a large role in the development that occurs. Good coaching will give players the fundamentals that they need to make the transition to the next level.”

As a player, Deren left Livonia Stevenson High School as the second leading goal scorer in the program’s history. He also fi nished third in the voting for Mr. Soccer in the state of Michigan as a forward in 1995. Deren’s playing career also includes winning a club national championship with Vardar at the U-18 level.

Deren enrolled at Oakland University after a stellar high school career, but transferred to Detroit after two seasons. He was the leading goal scorer for Oakland during his freshman season with 13 goals. Deren also played for the Detroit Dynamite and the Michigan Madness during this time. Th e Dynamite and Madness were formerly in the USISL, but now they are recognized in the PDL.

Deren transferred to Detroit in 1997, but suff ered an injury that forced him to take a medical redshirt for the 1998 season. He bounced back however and was named as a team captain in 1999. With Detroit, Deren netted seven goals, while dishing out fi ve assists at the midfi eld spot.

Deren graduated from UDM in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in history. He holds a USSF “A” License, as well as an Advanced National Diploma from the NSCAA.

Deren and his wife Jeanne (a former UDM assistant track coach) reside in Northville, MI, and have two daughters, Evelyn and Amelia, and a son Eli. Deren’s hobbies away from soccer include golf and running.

Head Coach Nicholas Deren will have a new face on the sidelines this season as James Tyers has been named as an assistant coach for the men’s soccer team.

Th e former professional soccer player brings 20 years of international coaching experience with him to Detroit. He holds many professional licenses including the USSF “Y”, USSF “D”, UEFA “C” and the Australia “B”.

Tyers began his career in England playing as a young professional for the Peterborough United Football Club, which was then in the English First Division. His next opportunity brought him to play professional

ball in the United States before moving his playing career on to Australia.

Th e former player-coach now dedicates all of his time and eff orts to coaching. He was appointed as the Director of Coerver Coaching (Michigan) in 2004. Coerver Coaching is an international organization highly regarded as one of the best coaching methodology for player training and development. 2004 was a busy year for Tyers as he was also selected as the Director of Coaching and Player Development for the Birmingham Bloomfi eld Soccer Club.

Additional experience includes working with Michigan’s Olympic Development Program (ODP) from 2004-07, spending two years as the Head Girls’ Varsity Coach at Andover H.S., and helping coach multiple organizations in Norfolk (UK).

Tyers earned his Sports Industries Degree in 1990 from the Norfolk College of Art and Technology (now known as the University of Anglia). He resides in Ferndale.

Th e UDM athletic department proudly

unveiled its on-campus soccer/track facility

in October of 2007. Th e facility is on the

site of the old natural-grass Titan Field,

and includes an A-Turf fi eld, along with a

six-lane polyurethane track and areas for the

steeplechase and fi eld events. Th e Titans

most recently added a new scoreboard to

the facility in the summer of 2011.

Th e fi rst event held in the facility was a

women’s soccer match against Wright State,

which ended in a 1-1 tie. Trina Kochanski

scored the fi eld’s fi rst goal just 20 minutes

into the contest for the Titans. Two weeks

later, the women would post the fi rst Titan

victory in the updated facility with a 4-0

blanking of Youngstown State. Th e fi eld

is utilized by the men’s soccer program as

well as the UDM men’s and women’s track

and fi eld program as well as the men’s and

women’s lacrosse teams, the only Division I

programs in the state of Michigan.

Phase 2 of the project, when completed

in the future, will include stadium seating

for 2,500-3,000 fans, concession stands, rest

rooms, a press box, lights and a building with

space for offi ces, locker rooms and storage.

“Th e construction of our synthetic fi eld

and track is another big step forward for

the Titan Athletics Program. I am excited

that our student-athletes and coaches, who

work so hard day in and day out, will have

the on-campus facilities they need to train

and compete,” Titans athletic director Keri

Gaither said. “Th e University’s substantial

commitment for the new facilities is a critical

component of our sport expansion plans.”

Keri Gaither was appointed as University of Detroit Mercy’s Director of Athletics in May of 2007, less

than six months after being asked to serve as Interim Director of Athletics. Soon after taking the helm of

Titan athletics, Gaither announced the expansion of the Detroit Titans Division I sports program from 16

to 19 teams with the addition of men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse and men’s tennis, all of which began play in

2008-09. In her fi rst two years, Gaither also expanded the athletic staff by adding eight full-time positions to

the department, directed the building and completion of a new $1.6 million all-purpose synthetic turf fi eld and

track, and was responsible for the hiring of men’s basketball coach Ray McCallum, women’s basketball coach

Autumn Rademacher, and softball coach Sunny Jones. Gaither recently completed a successful fundraising

campaign for the renovation of the men’s basketball offi ce suite and recently completed tennis complex that

includes eight new tennis courts, a tennis pavilion and a new grass fi eld to accommodate the lacrosse and soccer

teams.

Gaither was recognized for her strong leadership as UDM’s Director of Athletics when she was appointed to

the University of Detroit Mercy’s (UDM) senior leadership team as a member of the Associate Vice President’s

group in June of 2007. For the three years preceding her appointment as A.D., Gaither served as second in

command for the Detroit Titans Athletic Department and also supervised nine Titan women’s varsity sports

as the Senior Associate Athletic Director. During her tenure as Senior Associate A.D., Gaither played an instrumental role in the planning and

implementation of women’s golf in 2004 when it became UDM’s 16th varsity team. Prior to her selection as A.D., Gaither had served in several

key administrative roles for the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics including stints as Senior Woman Administrator and Director of Business

Operations.

Gaither Chaired the Detroit Local Organizing Committee (DLOC) for the 2009 NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four which was played in front

of a record-setting crowd of 72,922 at Ford Field in Detroit as the University of Detroit Mercy served as the host institution. As the DLOC Chair,

Gaither provided strong leadership for the DLOC and maintained ultimate responsibility for the local operations of the Final Four event. Gaither held

the same position, in addition to being designated Tournament Director, for the 2008 NCAA Men’s Basketball Midwest Regional.

As a current member of the Horizon League’s Executive Council, Gaither is actively involved with League operations. She currently serves on the

League’s Men’s Basketball Strategic Planning Committee and has served on both the fi nance and television committees. In July of 2010, Gaither was

appointed a new member of the Executive Committee of the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association. She is one of just 13 members serving

on the Executive Committee, which works on behalf of the membership of the D1-AAA, in addition to its President and fi ve other offi cers.

Gaither was also appointed to the NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee (MOIC) in September of 2009. As one of six Division

I members on the 15-person committee, Gaither is currently in year two of a four-year term. Th e MOIC was formed to review issues related to

the interests of ethnic minorities and women with a focus on education and welfare of minority student-athletes, as well as the enhancement of

opportunities for ethnic minorities and women in coaching, athletics administration, offi ciating and the NCAA governance structure.

In March of 2008, Gaither was presented with the Phenomenal Women’s Ashley Gray Legacy Award by the University of Detroit Mercy’s Student

Programming Board. Th is award was presented for her outstanding contribution toward the growth and development of students as the Director of

Athletics at UDM. Gaither was also honored in September of 2008 when she was named one of Crain’s Detroit Business’ “2008 Women to Watch” for

her goals and initiatives in the Detroit Titans athletics program and her leadership in serving as chair of Detroit’s Local Organizing Committee for

the 2009 NCAA Final Four.

While a member of the 2006 UDM Self-Study Steering Committee for NCAA Athletic Certifi cation, Gaither also served on the Equity and

Student-Athletic Welfare Sub-Committee and was designated the campus liaison during the certifi cation process. Shortly after the University received

its full certifi cation in April of 2007, Gaither was asked by the NCAA to serve as a Peer-Review Team Member.

Past University appointments include chairing UDM’s prioritization sub-committee and serving on various search committees. She is a past Board

Member for the University of Detroit Mercy’s Women’s Studies Program and served on the Women’s Studies Program Development Sub-committee.

She also participated as a member of the Tourism Action Group (TAG) Hospitality Committee, a group organized by the Detroit Metro Convention

& Visitor Bureau dedicated to training the hospitality industry for Detroit-area events such as the 2005 MLB All Star Game, Super Bowl XL, as well

as future major events.

In 2006, the Titan AD completed the NCAA’s inaugural Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minority Females, a leadership development program

sponsored by the NCAA Offi ce for Diversity and Inclusion and the Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee. Th e Leadership Institute,

designed to address the critical shortage of senior-level minority administrators at NCAA member institutions and conference offi ces, prepares diverse

leaders through a 12-month leadership training and skills development experience.

Gaither served as a past steering committee member of the Women’s Leadership Symposium for Intercollegiate Athletics and recently assisted in

coordinating its national leadership conference. Gaither is also a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA),

the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA), the Minority Opportunities Athletic Association (MOAA),

and the Black Coaches Association (BCA).

Graduating magna cum laude from the University of Detroit Mercy, Gaither earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. During her

undergraduate studies, she was a two-time recipient of the College of Liberal of Arts’ Economics Student of the Year Award. Gaither and her husband,

Brad Trombley, reside in Pleasant Ridge with their two children, Elliott (19), a junior at the University of Detroit Mercy majoring in Engineering, and

daughter Kennedy (13).

BYRNE WINS BIG BREAK

Former Titan David Byrne made Detroit proud as he won the Golf Channel’s reality television show Big Break Indian Wells in July of 2011. Th e victory gave Byrne a number of prizes, with the best of all a chance to play on the PGA Tour giving him an automatic exemption to the 2012 Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Along with the opportunity to play in the 2012 Zurich Classic, he took home over $70,000 in cash, a paid trip for two back to the Indian Wells Golf Resort, an Adams golf endorsement deal and a $10,000 shopping spree to Dicks Sporting Goods. Byrne outperformed 10 other contestants on the 10-episode series that was shot at Indian Wells Golf Resort in Indian Wells, Calif. When he competes at the Zurich Classic, he will be the fi rst Titan in school history to play on the PGA Tour.

RAY McCALLUM TO REPRESENT USA BASKETBALL

Sophomore Ray McCallum continued to fi nd himself in the national spotlight. Over the summer, he participated as a counselor in the LeBron James Skills Academy and was one of 10 collegiate point guards invited to the Deron Williams Skills Academy. Th en in August, he received an invitation to attend USA Basketball’s World University Games training camp, where he eventually made the fi nal 12-man roster. Th e squad practiced and trained in Colorado Springs, Colo., before embarking to China on Aug. 8 to begin competition. Despite being the youngest athlete on the US squad, and a late addition to the original invitees to the training camp, he impressed coaches enough to make the team and represent the US as the red, white and blue looked for its 14th all-time medal in the competition. McCallum teamed with players from national powerhouses like Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan State, Notre Dame and Syracuse. Th e team was coached by Matt Painter of Purdue, while Cuonzo Martin of Tennessee and Butler’s Brad Stevens served as assistants.

APR REPORT HAS TITANS RATED HIGH

Th e NCAA honored more than 900 Division I sports teams for their high marks academically last spring, including a pair of University of Detroit Mercy teams that achieved perfect scores. Th e Titan men’s golfers and men’s fencing teams each earned perfect 1000’s in the latest edition of the NCAA’s Public Recognition Awards, released in May. Th e NCAA announcement showed that 909 teams have earned the awards, based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rates. Th ese awards are given each year to teams scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport with their APRs. Th rough its innovative APR, which provides an annual scorecard of academic achievement, the NCAA tracks the classroom performance of student-athletes on every Division I sports team. A week later, Detroit brought home high marks in the NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate as 16 Titan teams were at or above the NCAA’s minimum standard (925) for the entire seven years since the association instituted the APR system (men’s and women’s lacrosse and men’s tennis are all entering their third year of varsity status at the school). Th e Detroit men’s fencing and men’s golf team each scored perfect multi-year 1000 APR scores, while women’s basketball, women’s golf and women’s tennis were all cited with perfect 1000 scores in the 2009-10 academic year.

DETROIT TITAN ATHLETICS TO NAME COURT IN HONOR OF

DICK VITALE

Dick Vitale received a tremendous honor from Detroit as the Titans announced that they will rename its basketball court in Calihan Hall after the legendary college basketball fi gure. Th e Dick Vitale Court at Calihan Hall will be dedicated in conjunction with a nationally-televised men’s basketball game against Big EAST foe St. John’s on December 5, 2011 on ESPN2. Vitale will be celebrating his 32nd anniversary of calling games for ESPN at the event having started on the sports television outlet on Dec. 5, 1979.

Vitale coached at the University of Detroit (1973-77), compiling a winning percentage of .722 (78-30), which included a 21-game winning streak during the 1976-77 season when the team participated in the NCAA Tournament. Included in the streak was a victory in Milwaukee over Al McGuire’s eventual national champion Marquette team. In April 1977, Vitale was named Athletic Director at Detroit and later that year was named the United Fund’s Detroit Man of the Year.Th e Dick Vitale Court at Calihan Hall project will feature a brand new, state-of-the-art hardwood fl oor for the home of the Detroit Titans men’s and women’s basketball teams. Fundraising for the project will include several other key improvements to the facility, including men’s basketball “Phase II” renovations, which began with new offi ces and upgraded locker room accommodations.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT A PRIORITY FOR DETROIT

Th e University of Detroit Mercy Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) did a great job as always in trying to help out the local community. Th roughout the school year, SAAC got together for a number of community initiatives, including the highly successful Sandwich Bus. Th e event gives Titan student-athletes a chance to come together in preparing a lunch and distributing it to the local community. SAAC also helped raise money for the Michigan Special Olympics with a Pie In Th e Face Fundraiser during a men’s lacrosse game as well as hosting a coat drive during a men’s basketball game for Nardly Human Services, Inc. Other student-athletes were involved outside of the fi eld and classroom too as men’s lacrosse players Brandon Davenport, Matt Lining and Adam Parrottino participated in a Habitat for Humanity project near Grosse Pointe, while men’s basketball standouts Eli Holman and Ray McCallum greeted attendees and showed support of the United Way and downtown Detroit at the annual Blocktoberfest. UDM also partnered with the Southeastern Michigan “Toys for Tots” during Th anksgiving Weekend where the Titans played host to the Legend’s Classic.

At the University of Detroit Mercy, the sports medicine staff is committed to providing the best care to all Titan athletes. Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine Michael Miller coordinates and oversees the sports medicine services at UDM for over 250 student-athletes.

Th e sports medicine staff is responsible for assessing athletic injuries and illnesses, administering fi rst aid and CPR care, making medical referrals, and preventing and rehabilitating athletic injuries that occur during the school year.

Th e sports medicine department is under the guidance of Dr. Michael Workings, a family practice physician from the Henry Ford Health System. Dr. Workings also acts as the Team Physician for the Detroit Tigers. Dr. Terrence Lock is back as the team orthopedic, while joining the staff for the 2010-11 season is Dr. Rehal Bhojani and Dr. Patrick Jean-Pierre, who will provide clinic and game coverage.

Th e athletic training facility is located at Calihan Hall. Th is training facility is equipped with a taping and fi rst aid station, treatment and modality tables, hydrotherapy whirlpools, and rehabilitative equipment.

Th e goals of the University of Detroit Mercy Sports Medicine Department are to prevent athletic injuries as much as possible through eff ective injury prevention programs, and to return injured athletes to their previous competitive status in the safest and quickest manner possible.

Th e main goal of the Strength and Conditioning Department is to help the student-athlete improve physically and mentally in their respective sport. Th is will be accomplished in such a way that is safe and effi cient for each individual athlete. As the student-athlete participates in these activities we will work to lessen the possibility of injury or re-injury. If an injury should occur, we will work with the Sports Medicine Staff and the student-athlete to complete rehabilitation.

Each team will have an individualized program based on their particular sport. Each program takes into account the intensity level, the physical demands, and skill involved in each individual sport and also each individual student-athlete. All teams and individuals will be subject to performance tests that will help design each program and also will help to determine the success of the program.

Th e Strength and Conditioning Staff will work with each individual coach at all times. Each coach will receive updated attendance, evaluation, and comments on a regular basis about each student-athlete. Communication is the key to success in the weight room and on the playing fi eld.

Th e Titans condition and train in the Larry Bleach Weight Room, located in Calihan Hall. All UDM student-athletes are trained under the supervision of two full-time certifi ed strength and conditioning coaches, as well as two intern assistants. Every member of the Titan strength and conditioning staff is assigned a team, which allows daily interaction between the athletes and the coaches. Such interaction is a tremendous asset when developing a program that best serves the athlete and the team.

In the past three years, the weight room expanded by over 400 square feet. Olympic style platforms, squat racks, stretch and other auxiliary speed equipment have also been added, all designed and implemented to improve the Titans’ speed and power. Th e center also features the ONS Performance nutritional shake, which is designed to help every athlete recover from training and conditioning with a supplement increase in their protein and carbohydrate intake.

Th e Detroit Titan strength and conditioning coaching staff has not only helped the Titan student-athletes, but professional athletes as well. UDM graduate and current New Orleans Hornets guard Willie Green comes back to use the facilities during the off season.

When talking about students who compete in a varsity sport, the term typically used is “student-athlete.” Th e word “student” comes fi rst, and that’s the way the University of Detroit Mercy approaches all of its athletic team members. Although performance in competition is important, they are students fi rst, and athletes second, with their performance in the classroom plenty important in Titan Territory.

UDM’s Center for Student-Athlete Development, one of the fi rst of its kind, off ers programs for academic classes, drug education, student enhancement and works to improve communication skills. All 19 varsity teams are encouraged to take full advantage of the programs off ered at the center. Th e center also heads up the NCAA Life Skills Program, which focuses on the student in student-athlete and how to deal with issues that all student-athletes today must face. Th rough seminars, guest speakers and NCAA videos, student-athletes are made aware of issues such as gambling and drug and alcohol abuse, and how to deal with these concerns.

Th e center is made possible, in part, by a grant from the NCAA. In conjunction with the staff of the University Learning Center, members of the center’s staff teach UAS 107, “Athletes in Transition,” each year. All freshman and transfer student-athletes must take this course during their studies at UDM. Th e course deals with how student-athletes can make the transition from high school to college. Th is important class teaches student-athletes to deal with time and stress management, study skills and the importance of good nutritional habits.

Another example of Detroit’s commitment to its student-athletes’ academic excellence is the Athletic Academic Coordinator’s post. Since the position was created, UDM’s graduation rate for student-athletes has steadily risen. Assistant Athletic Director For NCAA Compliance Steve Corder, no stranger to collegiate athletics as he played soccer for Detroit from 1994-98, and his staff carefully track each Titan’s academic

progress to make sure they are on the right path toward graduation. In addition, student-athletes are helped with their tutorial needs through the use of the student-run Learning Center, where professors and students donate their time as tutors.

Th e student-athletes’ academic progress is closely monitored and study table is set up to assist the Titans with any and all academic areas, including providing tutors and a writing lab. Th e center is open daily and also has evening hours to work around a student-athlete’s busy schedule. All freshmen must take part in the study table, as well as other student-athletes who have not yet achieved a 2.75 GPA.

Th e University of Detroit Mercy is committed to the principles of institutional control in operating our athletic department. We are responsible for adhering to the rules, regulations and spirit of the NCAA, Horizon League and the University.

Th e University of Detroit Mercy Compliance Offi ce directs this eff ort and acts a primary resource concerning NCAA rules, regulations and compliance issues. We ensure that our institution complies with all NCAA standards and we are responsible for monitoring all athletic programs to assure compliance.

UDM established its Sports Hall of Fame in 1977 in order to honor those student-athletes, coaches and administrators who have helped develop the successful tradition of Titan Athletics. Th e Hall of Fame now has 112 members, following the 10 latest additions made on Homecoming Weekend on Jan. 26, 2010.

Th e 2002 induction dinner was truly one to remember. Th e inductees included two of the Titans’ former basketball All-Americans, Terry Tyler and John Long – or Th under and Lightning, as they were aff ectionately known during their playing days – as well as the 1960 Titan football team as a unit. Additionally, the beautiful new Hall of Fame display in the Calihan Hall lobby was unveiled that night for a crowd which would fi ll the arena’s main fl oor during the induction dinner.

Long and Tyler were part of one of the winningest eras of Titan basketball, having helped their team to an 86-25 record over their four years combined. Th ey helped the Titans to an NCAA Tournament berth in 1977, and an NIT appearance one year later.

Long was the only player ever to lead the Titans in scoring for four straight varsity seasons, and he’s still the second-leading point producer in school history. Tyler, meanwhile, is the all-time Detroit leader for blocked shots in a game, a season and a career. He is also second in career fi eld goal percentage and sixth in scoring.

Th e pair’s old coach, none other than Dick Vitale, was the keynote speaker at his former players’ induction dinner. Th e present-day ESPN/ABC telecaster kept the audience captivated for more than an hour with his memories of coaching the Titans.

Th e 1960 football squad became the fi rst team ever to be inducted into the Hall of Fame en masse. Th at team fi nished the season 7-2 – the winningest U-D record of the post-World War II era. Two of those victories, over Cincinnati and Xavier, came by shutout. Future pro stars Larry Vargo, Bruce Maher, Steve Stonebreaker and Jerry Gross were all part of the 1960 Titan roster.

Th e most recent induction class included four former basketball players – Joe Kopicki, Jermaine Jackson, Rashad Phillips and, from the women’s team, Cassandra Pack – as well as former stars from baseball (Pat Adams and Mike Pesci), cross country/track and fi eld (Ken Dubois and Kim Jess), golf (Adam Walicki) and tennis (Maria Pandele).

In its 33rd season of operation in the 2011-12 academic year, the Horizon League continues to aspire toward its goal of being one of the nation’s leading athletics conferences while being recognized as a leader in the development of student-athletes as leaders and role models.

Th e Horizon League membership features ten public and private institutions that have impressive academic reputations and a storied tradition of broad-based athletic programs. Membership includes Butler University, Cleveland State University, the University of Detroit Mercy, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Loyola University Chicago, Valparaiso University, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Wright State University and Youngstown State University.

Th e Horizon League’s primary focus is on adding value to the educational experience through its four platforms: athletic performance, academic achievement, community outreach, and personal responsibility and accountability. It is the League’s belief that athletics is a powerful and visible resource tool that can be used to enhance student-athletes’ collegiate experience. Th e Horizon League’s goals are to enhance the holistic university experience for the student-athlete, to create an affi liation of institutions with similar athletic goals, and to adhere to the principals of integrity, diversity, excellence and growth. Th e Horizon League sponsors competition in 19 sports - nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and fi eld, outdoor track and fi eld and tennis) and ten for women (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, indoor track and fi eld, outdoor track and fi eld, tennis and volleyball).

Th e League receives automatic bids to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s volleyball, and for the fi rst time in League history, women’s golf. Th e Horizon League is headquartered in Indianapolis, the “Amateur Sports Capital of the World,” with offi ces in the Pan American Plaza (201 S. Capitol

Avenue), located a block from Lucas Oil Stadium and just minutes from Conseco Fieldhouse, the State Capitol Building, Victory Field (home of the Indianapolis Indians) and the NCAA national offi ce.

A PROUD HISTORYFounded on June 16, 1979, as the Midwestern City Conference with six charter members, the League changed its name to the Midwestern Collegiate Conference in 1985 and added women’s sports for the 1986-87 academic year. Charter members of the conference included current members Butler and Loyola as well as the University of Evansville, Oklahoma City University, Oral Roberts University and Xavier University. Among other current members, Detroit joined in 1980, and Cleveland State, UIC, Green Bay, Milwaukee and Wright State came aboard in 1994 (along with Northern Illinois University) in the largest non-merger conference expansion in history. Youngstown State joined in 2001 and Valparaiso in 2007. On June 4, 2001, the Horizon League unveiled its current name and ushered in a new dynamic direction that has brought the League closer to its stated goal of being one of the nation’s top ten collegiate athletic conferences with a focus on enhancing the student-athletes’ experience by upgrading the League’s market and competitive positions.

ATHLETIC SUCCESSIn the past few years, the Horizon League has enjoyed unprecedented success on the national stage, highlighted by Butler’s second consecutive appearance in the NCAA men’s basketball championship game appearance where the Bulldogs fell to Connecticut, 53-41. Th e Horizon League has compiled a 19-11 record in the past nine years in the NCAA tournament, ranking seventh among all collegiate conferences for winning percentage. Green Bay’s women’s basketball team became the league’s fi rst team to reach the Sweet 16 in 2011, knocking off Michigan State in the second round before going toe-to-toe with No. 1 seed Baylor in the regional semifi nals. Th e Phoenix earned a No. 5 seed in the tournament, going 34-2 on the year and holding a perfect 16-0 mark in Horizon League play. Men’s soccer has tasted victory in seven out of the last nine years (Milwaukee 2002-05,

UIC 2006-08), with UIC just one win away from the College Cup in 2007. In 2011, Butler was consistently ranked in the top 10 of the nation, earning the No. 13 national seed after becoming the last unbeaten team in the country. In softball, League teams won a game in the national tournament four straight years earlier in the decade (UIC 2002, 2004; Wright State 2003; Green Bay 2005) while advancing into the second round in women’s soccer three of the last six seasons (Detroit 2004, Milwaukee 2005-06). Butler’s Victoria Mitchell became the League’s fi rst NCAA individual champion when she won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

ACADEMIC SUCCESSHorizon League student-athletes also excel in the classroom as more than 500 have been named to the Academic Honor Roll each of the past nine semesters for carrying a grade-point average of 3.2 or better, including more than 700 for the last four semesters. 24 student-athletes were named to ESPN Th e Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District teams in 2010-11, while six earned Academic All-America honors.

COMMUNITY SERVICEIn addition to its athletics success, the Horizon League has secured a well-earned reputation for its community service initiatives. Each January, member institutions partner with local elementary schools for an art, music and essay contest highlighting the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with winners recognized at League games on the weekend of MLK Day. Th e Horizon League Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) also has continued a tradition of working with youth in Indianapolis during its annual summer meeting. In addition, SAAC is partnering with Special Olympics, putting on events for Olympians in each community. Several League men’s basketball coaches coached barefoot to support Samaritan’s Feet and Coaches vs. Cancer initiatives, and the League’s schools and fans donate to Komen for the Cure for breast cancer awareness during its annual women’s basketball championship. On campus, student-athletes have raised money and awareness for such causes as breast cancer, diabetes and hurricane relief, while hosting blood drives, neighborhood clean-ups, Big Brother/Big Sister programs and more.

SPORTSMANSHIPOne of the Horizon League’s points of emphasis is fostering collegial environments for competition among student-athletes, coaches, administrators and fans in a pro-active approach. Among

the vehicles is the Ethical Conduct Pledge, which is signed each season by student-athletes, coaches, offi cials, and campus and League administrators. Its purpose is to make all the involved groups aware of the Horizon League expectations of behavior during conference events.

DEMOGRAPHICSHorizon League institutions boast a combined enrollment of more than 130,000 plus nearly a quarter-million living alumni centered in the League’s Midwest footprint. League media markets include fi ve of the nation’s top 35 in Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Indianapolis and Milwaukee, covering more than ten million television households and encompassing more than nine percent of the nation’s television audience.

GOVERNANCETh e Horizon League is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of the ten member institutions’ chief executive offi cers. Dr. Ronald Berkman, President of Cleveland State, serves as Board Chair through June 30, 2012. John Parry, Director of Athletics at Cleveland State, serves as chair of the Executive Council, and Beth Goetz, Associate Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator at Butler, is the Vice Chair and Shelia Patterson of Cleveland State serves as chair of the Faculty Athletics Representatives.

LEADERSHIPJonathan B. ( Jon) LeCrone is in his 20th year as Commissioner of the Horizon League, having been named to the position on May 11, 1992, and is the fi fth-longest tenured commissioner among the 31 Division I conferences. He is the fi fth commissioner in League history, succeeding Daniel B. “Tucker” DiEdwardo (1989-92), James W. Shaff er (1984-89), Cecil N. Coleman (1980-84) and James J. McCaff erty (1979-80). LeCrone is in the fi nal year of a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Leadership Council after completing a fi ve-year term on the Division I Men’s Basketball Committee.

VISIBILITYTh e Horizon League has enhanced its media visibility with a number of initiatives. Th e League is in a three-year agreement with ESPN that includes selected regular-season men’s basketball action (ESPN2) and the men’s championship game (ESPN) and features increased exposures each year on ESPNU plus inclusion in the annual O’Reilly ESPNU BracketBusters, one of college basketball’s premier in-season events.

HORIZON LEAGUE NETWORKHaving streamed more than 2,000 free, live events in the last fi ve years, the Horizon League is a recognized leader in video streaming, through the Horizon League Network (HLN). HLN takes viewers inside the conference, featuring student-athlete profi les, weekly highlight shows, comprehensive coverage of all 19 Horizon League championships and other special programming. In 2010-11, HLN and HorizonLeague.com experienced unprecedented growth as more than 300,000 unique visitors across 149 countries/territories watched HLN coverage. Th rough the League’s partnership with WebStream Productions, Horizon-League.com integrated both HorizonLeagueNetwork.tv and HorizonLeague.org, leading to record visitors to the new site.
