Jackie MacMillan leads the St. Scholastica women’s hockey program into its fifth season in 2014-15. The Saints have made gradual improvements in each of the program’s first four seasons under MacMillan. The 2013-14 season saw the Saints come within one game of capturing the NCHA Regular Season Championship. It also saw the program produce St. Scholastica first Olympic Medalist in Nina Waidacher, who took home the bronze for Team Switzerland at the 2014 Sochi Games. In 2012-13, the Saints won their first postseason games and series, sweeping Lake Forest to advance to the NCHA O’Brien Cup semifinals. That season also saw the program’s first AHCA All-American First Team selection in Nina Waidacher. In the team’s second season, the Saints tied fourth in the NCHA and qualified for their first O’Brien Cup playoffs. The Saints more than doubled their win total in conference play and nearly doubled it overall. CSS was 8-2 in one-goal games and were a perfect 7-0 when leading after two periods. In the Saints’ inaugural season, the Saints won their first-ever game with a 3-0 defeat of Augsburg College in front of 1,246 fans. With a squad of 26, 21 of which were freshmen, the team was highly competitive, losing 10 of their 16 games by just one goal.

Prior to coming over to CSS, MacMillan spent two years as the head coach at Division III New England College, guiding the Pioneers to 15 wins in her first full season, which tied a single-season program record and led them to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East Championship game for the second time in school history. During her three seasons at NEC, she accumulated a 31-26-3 record.

Prior to moving to New England, MacMillan spent three seasons as the assistant coach at Division I Union College. Other coaching experience for MacMillan includes serving as an assistant coach at St. Olaf College and as an assistant coach for Shattuck-St. Mary’s Prep. She was also an instructor for numerous camps and hockey schools including, USA 18-Under Development Camp and NCWHL Hockey Clinic.

MacMillan is very familiar with first-year women’s

hockey programs as she was part of the first recruiting class for the University of Wisconsin in 1999.

“I was extremely blessed to be a part of the inaugural team at the University of Wisconsin,” MacMillan said. “What I remember are many of the first moments: the first practice, game, road trip and all of my teammates who were a part of those first four years. I hope to help the first women’s hockey players at St. Scholastica realize how truly unique they will be in the first years of the program.”

As a starting goalie for the Badgers, MacMillan led the nation in goals against average in 2002. She was a first team all-Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) selection in 2000 and was a second team choice in 2002. She was named WCHA Player of the Week six different times during her career and was on the WCHA All-Academic Team in 2002 and 2003.

During her four years MacMillan had 75 wins in between the pipes. She still holds numerous goaltending records for the Badgers. She also played for the United States under-22 national team in 2000.

MacMillan, who grew up in Buffalo, Minn., played with boys teams since she was five years old. She was a captain on the Buffalo High School Boys varsity team her senior year. She was inducted into the Buffalo Hockey Hall of Fame in 2005. MacMillan’s father, Mike, played goaltender at the University of Wisconsin-Stout.

Jessi Flink enters her fifth season as an assistant on the women’s hockey staff in 2014-15. Flink was a key member of the inaugural UMD women’s hockey team and was a part of the NCAA Division I National Championship teams in both 2001 and 2002. She was also on the WCHA All-Academic Team 2001 and 2002.

“Jessi has been a part of building a National Championship program at UMD and her expe-rience will be instrumental for helping build a successful program here at St. Scholastica,” head coach Jackie MacMillan said.

After her playing days, she was an assistant at Duluth East High School from 2003 to 2005. Just prior to taking the CSS assistant job, Flink worked as an Engineering Technician at Golder Associates Inc.

During the summer of 2011, Flink coached at the USA Hockey Select 16/17 Player Development Camp and also at the University of Minnesota-Duluth Hockey Camp. She was an evaluator at the Minnesota Reebok High Performance 17s.

Caring for athletes is part of our bigger commitment to the community. Essentia Health

donates more than $600,000 of our sports medicine services to the region’s schools each year.

We are the official team physicians to the Duluth Huskies, UMD, UWS, Hibbing Community College,

and The College of St. Scholastica. We’re medical directors for Grandma’s Marathon, the NorthShore

Inline Marathon and company physicians for the Minnesota Ballet. And we’re certified athletic

trainers for high school athletes at Duluth Central, Duluth East, Esko, Hayward, Hermantown,

Hibbing, Marshall, Northwestern, Proctor and Superior.

To us, that’s what sharing expert orthopaedic care is all about.

Tom has been at The College of St. Scholastica since August 2002 and is presently working with Football and Baseball. He also has worked on call for SMDC (St. Mary’s Hospital-Duluth). Mid-America’s gateway to the sea, Duluth’s harbor hosts ships from dozens of nations each year. Duluthians enjoy the beauty and sport of four seasons. In close proximity to the College are beaches, biking and jogging trails, ski resorts, cross-country ski trails, boating and fishing sites and rinks for skating, curling and hockey. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is close enough for week-end visits.

Duluth offers a wide variety of cultural activities as well. Each year the city’s auditorium hosts a long list of popular entertainers. The Minnesota Ballet, Duluth Playhouse, and Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra provide exciting year-round schedules. Duluth’s many historical attractions include Glensheen, a 39-room neo-Jacobean style mansion built on the Lake Superior shore, the St. Louis County Heritage and Arts Center, and the Marine Museum at Canal Park.

Duluth’s low crime rate, high quality of life and natural beauty frequently earn it high rankings in “best places to live” surveys. Recently, the nonprofit American Institute for Economic Research ranked Duluth one of America’s best small metropolitan areas for college students.

In June 2014, Duluth was voted “America’s Best Outdoor City” by Outside Magazine

Significant changes to the membership and leadership of both the Men’s and Women’s Northern Collegiate Hockey Association took place in 2013.

The Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association, which added the St. Norbert and St. Scholastica men’s programs, moved forward as the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association.

The landscape of the Men’s Conference was drastically changed when the University of Wisconsin state school members departed at the end of the 2012-13 season.

Along with the changes in membership, the NCHA Men’s and Women’s leagues utilize common executive leadership while having separate administrative structure, constitutions and bylaws. Dr. G. Steven Larson serves as Commissioner of both conferences, having previously served as Commissioner of the MCHA.

Jim Olson, who served as the Director of Officials for the MCHA, will serves in the same role for both the NCHA Men’s and Women’s Conferences.

Chris Zills and Brian Monahan, who previously worked behind the scenes for the MCHA and NCHA to publicize their respective leagues, moved into similar, but different roles moving forward for the NCHA. Monahan serves in the role of Director of Public Relations, taking an active role in promoting, social media, blogging and other “faces” of the media. Zills is the Director of Sports Information, maintaining the behind-the-scenes aspect of the communications department.

“Moving the eight current MCHA men’s programs forward as the NCHA brings together our men and women under one umbrella,” Adrian president & chair of the MCHA/NCHA president’s council Jeff Docking said. “We can now work on promoting growth on both fronts, while keeping 30-plus years of combined championship tradition alive.”

Speaking of championships, the regular season winner in both conferences now receive a trophy named after a significant leader in the growth of hockey. The Peters Cup - formerly given to the Men’s NCHA playoff champion - will now be given to the regular season champ. The Men’s playoff champ will win the Harris Cup, named after MSOE Director of Athletics Dan Harris, who served as the first president of the MCHA and helped get the league up and running.

“I am really excited about the coming together of the two leagues and about both the synergy and energy that will result from having our men and women compete under the same name,” Slaats said. “I am also honored and humbled to have the new league playoff championship bear my name. It’s hard to believe how quickly, and how much, women’s hockey has grown since the initial formation of a women’s division in the spring of 2000. I honestly could not be happier or more proud of the outcome.”

“Those of us at Concordia University are very excited to be a part of the new direction and strategic vision for our hockey conference,” MCHA DASC Chair Rob Barnhill said. “The level of competition in our new conference will be rigorous and the student-athlete experience will be greatly enhanced by participating with student-athletes from likeminded and like-missioned institutions.”

The online home of both the NCHA Men’s and Women’s Conferences will be www.nchahockey.org.
