Members of inaugural recruiting class who will be seniors this season


Taking the next step is something that all teams need to do in order to become an elite program. The challenge a team faces is to keep building toward goals and never settling for anything less than perfection. The Adrian men’s hockey program has set the bar very high in their first three years of existance. They have built a program that others want to follow. The Bulldogs are now looking toward the next step in their progression and that is winning another conference title, winning an NCAA Tournament game and competing for the Division III National Championship.

The first three years have been built around a very talented and committed recruiting class that are now entering their senior year. Each year has been culminated in the raising of the Harris Cup as champions of the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association (MCHA). The team’s record during the first three seasons is 77-8-1 and they have gone 59-1 in regular season MCHA contests. The two records are staggering enough if you are an established program, but to do it from scratch makes it even more remarkable. There are 17 players from the inaugural recruiting class that want to leave a lasting legacy at Adrian College.

“The opportunity to be part of a brand new program is what first drew me to Adrian College,” said captain Mike Towns. “To start an entire program from scratch, create tradition, and build such strong relationships has been an unbelieveable experience. We want to leave a legacy of a strong program, a winning tradition and the ability to compete at the national level year after year. Winning a national championship would be extremely difficult. To achieve such an accomplishment requires endless amounts of dedication, character, and commitment. We as a team are excited about the opportunity to compete for that ultimate prize.”

The national championship hardware is the team’s ultimate goal but it is also important to stay grounded and take each game as a learning experience.

“The objectives change each year but we can not take a night off,” said head coach Ron Fogarty entering his fourth year on the bench. “We need to make every game important and not look ahead too far. We have to be ready for anything other teams will throw at us. The MCHA is getting better and has great coaches who know hockey. Our schedule has gotten tougher each year and those battles prepare you for March.”

The usual suspects are back at forward with seniors Shawn Skelly, Mike Dahlinger and Eric Miller. Skelly is a

former MCHA Player of the Year (‘08-’09) and is the all-time point leader in school history (181). He has the ability to create space and has one of the hardest slapshots in

Division III. Skelly enters his senior season with 81 goals and 100 assists.

He has also scored 38 career power play goals, including 28 in MCHA play which is a league record.

Dahlinger is the reigning MCHA Player of the Year and has seen his

production increase each season with the team. He was named Second Team

All-American by the American Hockey Coaches Association after leading the MCHA in points and assists.

He finished the year with a career-best 41 assists including 36 helpers in MCHA action which set a league

record. Dahlinger formed a line with seniors Sam Kuzyk and Brad Houston last year which

proved to be the top scoring line

for the Bulldogs.Miller was fighting through

injuries last season and saw his production dip from his first two seasons. He finished with 36 points, which is very good by most standards, including 12 goals and 24 assists. Miller has had a stellar three-year career with 156 points including 70 goals and 86 assists. The forward spots also include junior Jeff Young and junior transfer Jordan Watts, who comes to Adrian from Division I member RPI.

Adding depth at forward will be freshman Josh Cousineau. The Penetang, Ontario native played junior hockey with Couchiching of the OJAHL and posted numbers of 65 points in 49 regular season games in 2009-10. He had an even better 2008-09 campaign in which he finished with 78 points including 11 points in 10 playoff games.

Sophomore Andrew Dovey will return for the Bulldogs after a fine rookie season. Dovey scored five goals and added 14 assists as a freshman. Towns is a steady team player who has served as captain for two years. He set a career-best with nine goals a year ago and also had nine assists. Houston is a quite offensive force who seems to creep up on opposing teams who are geared to stopping the other Adrian playmakers. He has scored at least 17 goals in all three seasons and has 58 career goals and 58 career assists. Houston has scored 12 career power play goals and served 175 penalty minutes.

Kuzyk, sophomore Zach Graham and senior Kyle Watson feature a good balance of scoring and toughness. Kuzyk scored a career-best 20 goals a year ago and ranked second on the team with 44 points. Graham was one of Division III’s best freshmen in 2009-10. He ranked 11th in Division III in points per game (1.61) and finished the year with 16 goals and 29 assists. He also ranked second in Division III in points by a freshman.

The defense will be spearheaded by four seniors who have a combined 290 games on the blueline for the Bulldogs. It looks like the defense will be without senior Chris Stansik, who will likely sit out this season recovering from an injury and be ready to play his final season in 2011-12. Senior Jeremy Klaver and senior Eric Roman will be a defensive pairing while senior Bobby Hineman and senior Quinn Waller will be a combo as well. Klaver and Waller have played more games than any other Bulldogs and bring experience and knowledge to the table. They quarterback a power play that has been sensational since their arrival. Klaver had 28 points including a career-best eight goals a year ago while Waller is one assist shy of the MCHA career record for a defenseman which is held by Stansik.

The goaltending situation has received a depth boost with the addition of freshman Mike Morissette to compliment senior Brad Fogal. Morissette hails from LaSalle, Ontario. He played junior hockey with Oakville of the OJAHL in 2009-10 and went 25-7 in goal in 35 games.

Fogal has logged a majority of the minutes over the last three seasons and could get a break when the time is right. He has never lost a game between the pipes in MCHA action going 52-0. He has a 68-7-1 record all-time with 12 shutouts and a 1.95 goals against average. In addition, he has a .922 save percentage and has made 1,653 saves.

HEAD COACH

Ron Fogarty begins his fourth season behind the bench as the architect of the successful men’s hockey program at Adrian College. The Bulldogs needed a leader to begin a program and found the right man in Fogarty. In 2009-10, the Bulldogs posted a

record of 24-4 (20-0 MCHA) and won their third straight Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association (MCHA) regular season and Harris Cup titles. The automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament by winning the Harris Cup allowed Adrian to play their first tournament game at St. Norbert (Wis.). The Bulldogs fell 4-3 to the Green Knights nearly rallying from a 4-1 deficit. The team has compiled a 77-8-1 record under his watch, which is the best three-year beginning in NCAA Division III history. Last season marked the third straight year that Adrian led NCAA Division III in scoring (6.71 gpg). In addition, they led Division III in scoring margin (4.25) and penalty killing (90.5 percent) and ranked second on the power play (29.9 percent). The team finished the season ranked 10th in the USCHO.com national poll.

Adrian posted a 27-1-1 record in 2008-09 while going a perfect 20-0 in the MCHA, which had never been done before in league history. The team once again was the top scoring team in Division III averaging 6.52 goals per game. In addition, the team ranked second in scoring defense allowing 1.69 goals per game. The Bulldogs led the nation in penalty minutes per game (26.6) and also had the best power play (35.9 percent). AC had the fourth-best penalty kill (88.3 percent) and had the most wins in Division III. At the conclusion of the season, Adrian was ranked seventh in the USCHO.com national poll.

The Bulldogs had unprecedented success in 2007-08 as they set an NCAA single-season record for wins by a first-year program (26-3). Adrian College captured the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association (MCHA) regular season and tournament titles in convincing fashion. The Bulldogs concluded the regular season with a 19-1 conference record which was nine points better than second place Marian. In the conference tournament, held in Milwaukee, the Bulldogs needed overtime in the championship game against a pesky Finlandia squad but survived for the 1-0 win. Along the way, the Bulldogs were ranked as high as eighth in the national polls and set numerous statistical records. Adrian set 17 conference records in 2007-08 and ranked first in Division III in scoring offense (7.59 goals per game), scoring margin (5.34 goals per game), and power play percentage (.357).

Prior to Adrian College, Fogarty served as assistant coach at Bowling Green State University (Ohio) in the Division I CCHA Conference and served as the top assistant coach at Clarkson University (New York).

Fogarty was a four-year member of the Colgate ice hockey team before graduating in 1995. He was named to the 1992 ECAC All-Rookie team and received the Colgate Coaches’ Award

in 1994. He participated in the Senior All-Star game following his senior season and upon graduation ranked 20th on the Red Raider’s all-time scoring list with 141 points. He remained at Colgate for three years as a member of the coaching staff.

A native of Sarnia, Ontario, Fogarty played professional hockey for the Memphis Riverkings of the Central Hockey League during the 1995-96 season. He was voted to the All-Rookie team and was honored with the team’s Mr. Hustle Award.

Fogarty gained valuable coaching and recruiting experience from 1991-93 when he worked with the Bluewater Sharks (Bantam) of the Summer AAA. During his tenure, the Sharks compiled a 57-19-3 record and Fogarty was named the Coach of the Year after just one season.

Fogarty and his wife, Monica, reside in Adrian and have three children, Jordan, Rachel and Emma.

Stavros Paskaris begins his second year as assistant coach for the men’s hockey team at Adrian College. Paskaris came to Adrian after a one-year stint as the assistant coach at Ohio University for their ACHA Division I program. The Bobcats were CSCHL playoff champions and ranked eighth nationally by the ACHA. His responsibilities included coaching defensemen, coaching the penalty killing unit, recruiting coordinator and video analysis. The Bulldogs led Division III in penalty kill percentage in 2009-10.

Paskaris has also been busy coaching in a couple of different venues. He is a certified USA Hockey Level 3 coach and has been a guest speaker at several youth clinics.

Paskaris recently completed his playing career for the Wayne State University Warriors in Detroit, Michigan. WSU was home for Stavros from 2004-08 and he was named First Team All-CHA in 2008. In addition, he was a four-time All-Academic selection by the CHA and was named to the 2005 All-Rookie Team and was CHA Rookie of the Year.

After his collegiate days, Paskaris played in 2008 for the Dayton Bombers of the ECHL. Paskaris earned a Bachelor of Science in business administration at Wayne State in 2008. He also completed his Master of Recreation and Sport Science degree in coaching education from Ohio University in 2009.

Jay McCabe returns to the Bulldogs for his fourth year as one of the team’s assistant coaches. McCabe helps with practices and during games communicates from the press box with the coaching staff on the bench.

Born in nearby Toledo, Ohio, McCabe split his collegiate playing career between D-I Western Michigan (CCHA) and D-III Salem State College. As a member of the Broncos from ‘97-’99, McCabe recorded two goals and four assists for six points and 16 penalty minutes in 36 games. After transferring to Salem State College during the 2000-01 season, McCabe put up totals of 18 goals and 28 assists for 46 points with 54 penalty minutes in 53 games.

McCabe earned a bachelors’ degree in general studies and upon graduation played one year professionally with the Jacksonville Barrracudas in the SPHL. With the Barracudas, McCabe teamed up with his cousin, John, and recorded 39 points with 22 goals and 17 assists. He also had 35 penalty minutes in 46 games.

McCabe resides in Hudson, Mich. and works for Auto Owners Insurance Company as a claims representative.

Chris Clarke returns to the Bulldogs for his fourth year as one of the team’s assistant coaches. Clarke helps with practices and during games communicates from the press box with the coaching staff on the bench.

Born in Arnprior, Ontario, Clarke was a 10th round draft choice of the Washington Capitals, the 204th selection in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft. Beginning in the fall of 1987 to the spring of 1991, Clarke was a member of the CCHA’s Western Michigan Broncos. An offensive defenseman, Clarke skated in 170 games as a Bronco while recording an impressive 16 goals and 97 assists for 113 points while serving 238 penalty minutes.

Upon graduating with a business finance degree, Clarke spent the next nine seasons playing pro hockey in North America and Germany. He spent time in the AHL, ECHL and the German 1st and 2nd Divisions.

Clarke resides in Tecumseh with his wife, Jennifer, and their three sons, Cameron, Carter and David. Clarke is assistant vice president for business banking at United Bank and Trust.

MCHA YEAR IN REVIEW


ADRIAN COLLEGEAdrian College evolved from a theological institute founded by the Wesleyan Methodist denomination at Leoni, Michigan, a small town east of Jackson, in 1845. In 1855 this institute united with the Leoni Seminary, a Methodist Protestant institution, to establish Michigan Union College.

Legend states that members of the College became concerned about the environment at Leoni, which was nicknamed “Whiskey Town.” In 1859, this concern and other circumstances made it advisable to relocate or close. In the same year, Dr. Asa Mahan, pastor of the Plymouth Congregational Church in Adrian and a well-known educator, was encouraged by citizens of the community to establish a college. Mahan had served as the first president of Oberlin College and, before that, as an officer of Lane Theological Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Dr. Mahan and his colleagues invited the officials and supporters of the closing Michigan Union College to join in establishing the new college at Adrian. After the invitation was accepted, the story says, the library holdings were loaded on an ox-cart in March 1859, and transported 60 miles to the new campus site on the west side of Adrian.

On March 28, 1859, Adrian College was chartered by the Michigan legislature as a degree-granting institution with Dr. Mahan as its first president. Through a series of consolidations and denomination unifications, the College has maintained its relationship with The United Methodist Church.

For almost 100 years, the campus consisted of several brick buildings stretching along Madison Street. Most of today’s campus was woods and fields. In the mid-1950s, the College, encouraged by the generosity of Ray W. Herrick, embarked in a building program that established the basis for the current campus.

Today, when students walk in the area bounded on the east by Madison Street and edged by Downs Hall, Valade Hall, Cornelius House and Herrick Tower, they tread on the same ground that students hurried across in 1859 as they rushed to classes, meals and social events. Now, however, the campus consists of 100 acres, over 20 academic and service buildings and 10 residence halls, plus apartments and themed housing.

Adrian College is pleased to announce that it is included in this year’s version of G.I. Jobs 2011 list of Military Friendly Schools. The list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools which are doing the most to embrace America’s veterans as students.

“Adrian College is honored to be selected as a Military Friendly School,” said Dr. Jeffrey Docking, president of Adrian College. “While our efforts to assist veterans are small compared to their efforts to defend our country, we appreciate being recognized as a college that believes in patriotism and service to our country.”

Schools on the list range from state universities and private colleges to community colleges and trade schools. The common bond is their shared priority of recruiting students with military experience.

Dr. Jeffrey R. Docking, 17th president of Adrian College, earned a doctorate in social ethics from Boston University, a Master of Divinity degree from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, and a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University. He became president July 2005.

Before coming to Adrian, he held positions at Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, Penn., most recently as vice president and special assistant to the president, and as vice president of student affairs and dean of student affairs. He also has experience teaching and working in residence life. He and his wife Elizabeth have four children.

ARRINGTON ICE ARENAArrington Ice Arena was officially dedicated and

opened for business on October 19, 2007 as the men’s varsity hockey team squared off in their inaugural game against Potsdam State. The Bulldogs christened the new facility with a resounding 9-1 win in front of a packed crowd, who were also in attendance to see Lord Stanley’s Cup on loan from the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.

The facility is home to Adrian College’s men’s and women’s varsity Division III hockey teams as well as the ACHA Division I and III men’s hockey teams and the synchronized skating team.

The arena is named after Dr. Robyn Arrington, Jr. and his brother, fellow Adrian alumnus Col. Harold Arrington. The brothers donated $3 million on behalf of their family. The $5.5 million project is also a place where local residents can use the facility for recreational activities. The operating schedule includes open skates for the community, learn-to-skate programs for children and adults and hockey programs for people of various ages and abilities.

The arena consists of a single sheet of ice, 550 chair-back seats, a media press box, a president’s seating area, concession stand, pro shop with skate rental, offices for ice sports coaches and personnel and locker rooms. Arrington Ice Arena has already been praised as one of the best hockey venues in Division III. The arena has hosted such events as a Detroit Red Wing Alumni Game and the 2009 and 2010 MCHA Harris Cup Final Four. In addition, Arrington Ice Arena has played host to the 2010 ACHA Division I All-Star Game and will host the MCHA Harris Cup for the third straight year in 2011.
