The Michigan Tech cross country teams enter the 2008 season with a solid core of returners as well as a talanted group of incoming freshmen. The team also welcomes a new assistant coach to the program, Jason Cork. Cork, a native of Fairbanks, Alaska, joins the Huskies after serving as the head coach of the Durango (Colo.) Nordic Ski Club. Cork led the team to three state championships and qualifi ed 19 athletes to the Rocky Mountain Junior National Team. Of those 17 athletes, seven obtained All-American status a total of 33 times. Under his leadership, one athlete claimed a junior national title and another competed in two World Junior Championships. “I’m really excited to be joining Michigan Tech and being back in the Midwest,” said Cork. “I’m looking forward to working with all the teams and transitioning to working with NCAA athletes. I’m hoping to help these athletes achieve their goals, both individually and as teams.”

MenThe Michigan Tech men’s cross country team returns the majority of last year’s squad as it looks to improve upon last season’s success after fi nishing eighth at the GLIAC Championships, tying its best fi nish in the past fi ve seasons. The Huskies enter the 2008 season without its number one runner from a year ago Adam Airoldi (Everson, Wash.) due to graduation. The team will also be without Ryan Kruger (Negaunee, Mich.) who also graduated. The team will look to a pair of seniors and a junior, Chris Harvey (Eden Prairie, Minn.), Stuart Kramer (Marquette, Mich.) and Ken Gilkerson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) to lead the team. Kramer rejoins the team this season after attending forestry camp in Alberta a year ago. The sophomore class will be looked upon for strong results and depth this season after a year of training with the team. Sophomore Brian Stetter (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) was named the team’s Rookie of the Year last season after fi nishing second on the team and 29th overall at the GLIAC Championships a year ago.

WomenThe Michigan Tech women’s cross country will look to a group of underclassmen in 2008 to replace it’s top three runners from last season. Senior Laura Kangas (Chassell, Mich.), who was

named the team’s most valuable runner a year ago, returns to lead the Huskies in 2008. She posted three top-fi ve fi nishes last season and led the team with her 49th place fi nish at the NCAA Regionals. The Huskies will also look to the rookie of the year from last season, junior Catie Cogger (Washburn, Wis.) to compete for top honors on this year’s squad. Her constant improvement throughout the season saw her fi nish the season as the team’s number-two runner. Junior Jenna Klein (Ely, Minn.) returns to the team after a redshirt season. She wasn’t away from training completely though as she qualifi ed for the NCAA Skiing Championships for the second straight season. Klein will also be joined by senior Karen Jarvey (Calumet, Mich.), sophomore Kristen Monahan (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and sophomore Christina Mischica (Hancock, Mich.) who all return from the 2007 squad. The team will also welcome a trio of incoming freshmen to the team. Lauren Rantala (Eden Prairie, Minn.) was a member of the 4x800 meter relay team that fi nished fourth at the Minnesota State High

School Track Meet. Melanie Hoffman (Sobieski, Wis.) comes to the team after a standout career at Pulaski High School where she led the Raider cross country team to a conference championship and a runner-up fi nish at the state meet. Darcy Mundahl (Winona, Minn.) the younger sister of Erik Mundahl will also join the team, along with a number of other newcomers.

ScheduleThe Michigan Tech cross country teams will once again use a tough schedule to prepare through out the season for the GLIAC Championships and NCAA Regionals. The Huskies will open the season with a low-key meet at home before getting a preview of the GLIAC Championship course a week later in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. After a week off, the team will face stiff competition during back to back Saturdays competing at the Midwest Collegiate Meet hosted by UW-Parkside and the Roy Griak Invitational hosted by the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Tech will use one more tune-up meet at Northern Michigan before they take part in the GLIAC Championships hosted by Lake Superior State. Ferris State plays host to this year’s Great Lakes Regional Championship as the Huskies compete for a spot at the NCAA Championships hosted by Slippery Rock University.

The Michigan Tech track and fi eld teams enjoyed another successful season breaking four school records. Junior Erin Ballun (Oswego, Ill.) bettered her own record in the high jump at the Hillsdale Relays with a leap of 5-7. She also earned All-GLIAC honors in the high jump with a second place fi nish with a height of 5-6. She was also the fi rst Husky to ever compete in the heptathlon fi nishing 12th at the GLIAC Championsips with 3,565 points. Senior Andrea Metz (Marathon, Wis.) capped off her career at Michigan Tech by winning the GLIAC title in the 1,500-meter run in a school record time of 4:38.33. She picked up many awards following the season including the GLIAC Commisioners Award, an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Region selection and an All-GLIAC Academic selection. The men’s team also broke one school record on the year in the 4x100-meter relay. Freshman Jonathon Folse (Detroit, Mich.), freshman Akeem Cason (Benton Harbor, Mich.), freshman Stephen Worthy (Detroit, Mich.) and junior Robert Haynes (Lansing, Mich.) ran a 42.17 to break the previous mark of 42.45 set in 1986.

Award winners for 2008 were announced at Michigan Tech’s all-sports awards luncheon in late April. Ballun walked away with most valuable athlete honors and Metz was named most improved. Freshman Beth Geerer (Harrison Twp., Mich.), who posted the team’s best performance in the 400-meter hurdles (1:14.19), was named the rookie of the year. Junior Laura Kangas (Chassell, Mich./forestry), freshman Samantha Stam (Negaunee, Mich./mathematics) and freshman Alison Springer-Wilson (Dearborn, Mich./chemical engineering) were all honored with the scholastic achievement award with identical 4.0 GPA’s. Sophomore Ken Gilkerson (Brooklyn Park, Minn) was named the most valuable athlete for the men’s team after he ran a personal best in the 800-meter run in 1:54.91, only .51 off the school record. Freshman Luke Wyzlic (Ironwood, Mich.) picked up most improved honors and freshman Aaron Knopp (Gaylord, Mich.) was named rookie of the year. Gilkerson (mechanical engineering) and freshman Joseph Anhalt (Brainerd, Minn./chemical engineering) shared the scholastic achievement award with a perfect 4.0 GPA.

Campus Life and the Keweenaw

There are many ways to stay active and get involved at Michigan Tech. On-campus, the 600-acre recreational forest and Tech Trails have been upgraded with lights and additional terrain for skiing, bikingand jogging. Nearby, the University’s 18-hole golf course and lighted ski hill challenge university and community members. With more than 180 student organizations, there’s something for everyone, and many students choose to give back via Habitat for Humanity, Engineers Without Borders and other groups. Michigan Tech traditions include K-Day, which is an afternoon to celebrate the Keweenaw Peninsula and enjoy McLain State Park on the shores of Lake Superior, the world’s largest freshwater lake. TheParade of Nations is a celebration (including food) of the nations of the world that have students, faculty and staff members at Michigan Tech. At Homecoming, students dress in their worst attire and paradethrough campus in dilapidated vehicles that barely run. Students also enjoy a football game, a Hobo Mixer and various special events. The biggest annual event is Winter Carnival, when massive snow statues emerge on campus and in the towns. Skits, a queen competition, fi rst-class entertainment, ice hockey and thousands of visitors make this a great experience. Broomball is a popular game on campus and students slide around on ice rinks chasing a volleyball toward the net. All the action is on our webcams! The entire area is great for outdoor enthusiasts, with easy access to rivers, lakes, woods and trails. Also, downtown Houghton and Hancock (combined population 14,000) offer coffee shops, theaters, stores, restaurants and more. Major retailers are just outside of Houghton, a short drive or bus ride from campus. Houghton was included in the book The 100 Best Small Townsin America. Men’s Journal ranked Houghton as one of the top-10“healthiest, safest and most fun places to live,” and NationalGeographic Adventure Magazine ranked our setting as one ofAmerica’s top-10 summer sports destinations. All in all, it’s a great combination: a world-class education in abeautiful location.

The University

Michigan Technological University prepares students to create the future. More than 7,000 Michigan Tech students from all 50 states and more than 80 nations are engaged in discovery-based, experiential education in beautiful Upper Michigan. The campus, situated along the Keweenaw Waterway, is small enough to walk across in a few minutes, and most classrooms are located close to the residence halls. The campus is completely wireless and features state-of-the-art facilities that are constantly being upgraded. Michigan Tech offers more than 120 degree programs in arts, humanities and social sciences; business and economics; computing; engineering; forestry and environmental science; natural and physical sciences and technology. Michigan Tech has top-10 enrollments in environmental, mechanical and geological engineering programs and one of the nation’s largest programs in scientifi c and technical communication. US News & World Report has ranked Michigan Tech in the top tier of national universities, and our environmental engineering department is ranked 13th. We also rank in the top 25 nationally in least amount of debt incurred by our graduates. US News ranked four of our graduate engineering programs in the top 50 nationally. We are also rated among the nation’s best universities and received high marks for our library, computing facilities, and career services by The Princeton Review. Most recently, Reader’s Digest has rated MichiganTech the third-safest campus in the nation.
