The Titans have a number of training courses available to them as they pursue the Horizon League Championship with two main courses that they run on throughout the year.

One course is Cass Benton Park in Northville, the site for the Annual Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invitational, located just off I-96 and a short drive from campus. The course provides an extensive challenge as it is one of the oldest and hilliest areas of the park.

Detroit also utilizes Kensington Metro Park in Milford, where UDM hosted the 2009 Horizon League Championships and the 2008 Michigan Intercollegiate. Kensington covers 4,481 acres featuring a wooded hilly terrain that surrounds beautiful Kent Lake. Each year more than two and a half million visitors will make their way to Kensington.

The Titans also train nearby at Palmer Park, Heritage Park, Martin Road Park and Belle Isle.

Palmer Park is located on 7 Mile and Woodward. The property includes Palmer Woods and the Detroit Golf Club. The area is home to some of Detroit’s premier neighborhoods, including Palmer Woods, Sherwood Forest, University District and Green Acres.

Heritage Park in Farmington Hills is a 211-acre park with more than four miles of trails for hiking and cross-country skiing, a large picnic area, playground, sand volleyball courts, and an in-line hockey rink.

Martin Road Park in Ferndale is the city’s main recreation area. Parks and Forestry is responsible for the maintenance of 11 neighborhood parks in Ferndale along with three mini-parks comprising 81 acres.

Belle Isle is a 982 acre island park on the Detroit River managed by the Detroit Recreation Department. It is connected to the rest of the city by the MacArthur Bridge. It is the largest island park in the United States and the third largest island in the Detroit River after Grosse Ile and Fighting Island.

DIRECTOR OF CROSS COUNTRYDIRECTOR OF CROSS COUNTRYGuy Murray enters his 19th season at the University of Detroit Mercy where he serves as the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country for both the men and women. A Titan fan from his day as a standout runner, Murray has already accounted for nine conference championships in the Titan trophy case.

Murray most recently guided the men’s cross country team to a fi fth place fi nish at the Horizon League Championship. A strong senior class that included Patrick Liederbach, Alex Harris, Ryan Ayala, Kevin Smalley, Kevin Wozniak, and Brian Greenhoe helped lead the Titans to a successful 2010 season.

Patrick Liederbach was a four time All-League performer under Murray’s direction. He became just the fi fth Titan in school history to receive multiple conference honors. Liederbach also fi nished in the top 100 at the regional four times making him just the third Titan harrier to reach that achievement.

The men’s team wrapped up the 2010 campaign with a trip to the NCAA Great Lakes Regional where they placed 22nd overall with a score of 639.

The women’s team placed eighth at the 2010 Horizon League Championship. Murray had his young team peak at the perfect time as fi ve UDM runners came up with their 5k PR at the event. Detroit ended the year by taking 32nd place at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional.

A four-year letter winner on the Titan cross country and track teams from 1985-89, Murray graduated Magna Cum Laude from Detroit with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science in May of 1989. At Detroit, he won the Dominick Taddonio Cross Country MVP award in 1988 and the University of Detroit’s President’s Award, the athletic department’s highest honor, for the top senior student-athlete in 1989. He was named to the All-Midwestern Collegiate Conference (MCC) Cross Country Team in 1986 and the All-MCC Track and Field Team in 1989.

GUY MURRAYGUY MURRAYHe was an Olympic Trial Qualifi er in the marathon in 1999 after he fi nished 19th at the Grandma’s Marathon with a personal best time of 2:21:18. At the Olympic Trials in 2000, Murray placed 57th, with a mark of 2:35:16.

Following graduation he joined the coaching staff of Earl Clark Jr. and Kevin Donner as an assistant before being elevated to his current title in 1993. For the next two years, he was the head coach for the men’s and women’s track and fi eld program and the women’s cross country team, while overseeing the men’s unit until Detroit Hall-of-Fame coach Earl Clark stepped down in 1995.

As an assistant coach, he was responsible for coaching fi ve MCC individual track and fi eld event champions as well as two MCC track and fi eld Most Outstanding Performers, all while completing his master’s degree in sports administration at nearby Wayne State University.

As a head coach, his teams have accrued many honors and championships, The men’s and women’s teams swept the 1996 indoor MCC titles. The women’s squad also won back-to-back indoor crowns in 1998 and ‘99, and took home the outdoor titles in 1999 and 2000. The men’s team took home a share of the indoor title in 2000, with the women bringing home another indoor crown in 2002 and the men’s success in 2003 winning the outdoor title. In 2005, the Titan women were Horizon League runners-ups and the men were most recently Indoor Horizon League runner-ups in 2011.

Teams that have been coached by Murray also excel in the classroom as the men’s squad was honored in 2004 by the USTFCCCA as it brought home the highest combined grade point average in the country. The trend continues as the men were honored for the ninth-straight year in 2011, as one of the nation’s All-Academic Teams. Their 3.41 GPA was the highest among the four Horizon League teams on the academic list as well as the highest GPA of any Division I team in the state of Michigan that was honored.

The women’s team was also recognized as an All-Academic Team for the third year in a row, after recording a 3.39 GPA. The GPA was the third highest out of the fi ve conference teams honored and was also the second best out of the fi ve Division I Michigan schools that made the mark.

Individually, eight different Titans have been selected Academic All-America by the USTFCCCA: Kim Hemstreet (2002), Kim Jess (1995), Andrea Karpala (2003, 2004, 2005), Ryan Byrne (2005, 2008), Krista Switzer (2006), Sinisa Simic (2007) and Amanda Smith (2008).

Two Murray-coached athletes have qualifi ed for the NCAA National Championships in Hemstreet (2002, cross country) and Paul Caraballo (1997, Track and Field). Caraballo was named an NCAA All-American in 1997 after he placed seventh in the high jump. In all, four athletes have provisionally qualifi ed for the NCAA Championship. Since its inception in 2003, the Titans have had a qualifi er for the outdoor regional championship each year.

In addition to his team’s successes, Murray has been named league Coach of the Year for women’s outdoor track twice (1999, 2000), men’s outdoor once (2003) and seven times for his indoor success (women’s in 1994, ‘96, ‘98, ‘99 and 2002 and men’s in ‘96 and 2000).

Murray and his wife Patricia live in Redford with their ten-year-old daughter Kaitlin Renee and four-year old son Colin.

ASST. COACH EMILI JACKSONASST. COACH EMILI JACKSON Emili Jackson returns for her fi fth season as an assistant coach for track and fi eld and cross country. At UDM, Jackson works primarily with the women’s distance runners in track as well as the women’s cross country team.

In her fi ve years with the cross country program, Jackson has helped tremendously, as the Titans’ capped off the 2008 season with fi ve runners in the Great Lakes Regional for the fi rst full scoring squad (32nd) since 2004. In 2009, UDM placed 29th with 882 points at the GLR, and sixth overall at the Horizon League Championship with a score of 150.

She began her coaching career in strength and conditioning at Wayne State in 2004. She then added two years (2005-07) of track and fi eld/cross country coaching experience at Salesian High School in Richmond, CA. There, she coached two state meet qualifi ers, including one state champion.

In July of 2007, she was certifi ed as a USA Track & Field Level Two coach. She continues to run in her off time recently helping a team comprised mostly of UDM Alumni, staff and current Titans take ninth at the Great Lakes Relay in the summer of 2009.

Jackson graduated from Central Michigan in 2003 after running both cross country and track. She lives in Royal Oak along with her husband Matthew and their newborn daughter Emerson.

The 2011 team will have some big shoes to fi ll as the graduating class from a year ago put their stamp on the program. “This will be a very interesting year as we replace a talented senior class,” Head Coach Guy Murray said. “It is hard to project what will happen, but I hope that our guys respond to the opportunity they have. We could have a very good pack. The big question will be how to replace the low number that Patrick Liederbach provided each meet.”

This year’s senior class includes Bob Radlich, Matt Mahler, Derek Hoerman, and Erik Westbrook. Radlich made a solid contribution to the team during his junior season. He set his 8k personal record at the Louisville Classic with a time of 26:46. Radlich also fi nished the year strong by setting his 10k PR at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional with a time of 35:09. Additional highlights from the 2010 season include taking 11th at the 2010 Golden Grizzly Open (19:55 – 6k) and placing 36th at the Titan Invite (22:05).

“Bob has been steady over the past two years and I believe he is in line for a good year.” Murray said. “He has trained well and therefore has improved.”

Erik Westbrook had an up-and-down junior campaign as he dealt with an injury. Westbrook started the year strong with a 39th place fi nish at the Golden Grizzly Open (21:34 – 6k). He followed that performance fi nishing 59th overall at the Detroit Titan invite (23:04 – 4 Mile). Westbrook’s fi nal race of the season was at the Horizon League Championships. He took 63rd overall with a time of 27:32.

“Erik continued to get better after injuries slowed his progress on a good sophomore year,” Murray added. “He is coming off a solid track and fi eld season and I look for him to be a contributor this year.”

Matt Mahler and Derek Hoerman were limited in 2010 with injury issues. Mahler only competed in the Detroit Invite. He fi nished 47th with a time of 22:37. “Matt has the ability to help this team,” Murray said. “He is healthy and ready to go.” Hoerman set his four mile PR at the Detroit Invite clocking in at 22:26. He also ran at the HL Championships taking 81st overall with a time of 28:33.

“In order to move up from fi fth in the Horizon League, we will need someone to fi nish in the top-20 at the HL meet,” Murray added.

UDM has two juniors on the roster. Edwin Gay and Chris Smalley are each poised for a good season. “Edwin is an experienced runner who has shown the potential to be ready for a good year,” Murray said. Gay participated in fi ve races during the 2010 season and set three personal records. He posted his fastest four mile time at the Titan Invite placing 19th overall (21:18). Two weeks later, Gay set his 8k PR at the Louisville Classic crossing the fi nish line in 25:57 for 37th overall. Gay ended his season at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional by setting his 10k PR with a time of 33:47.

Smalley was active for Detroit a year ago as he competed in all but two races in 2010. “Chris has potential and should improve this season,” Murray said. Smalley set his 8k PR at the Louisville Classic last year with a time of 28:07. He also ran well at the HL Championships, where he fi nished 79th overall with a time of 28:31.

Martin Nelkie and Sam Felton make up the sophomore class. Nelkie ran very well for UDM as a freshman. He placed 12th at the Golden Grizzly Open (19:56), and 20th at the Titan Invite (21:22) to start the year. Midway through the season he set his 8k PR at the Louisville Classic with a time of 26:28. He fi nished the year as well as he started by setting his 10k PR at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional. Nelkie placed 154th clocking in at 33:42. “Martin had a strong fi nish to his freshman track and fi eld season as well,” Murray said. “Knowing what is ahead for him will help.”

Felton improved throughout the 2010 season and eventually set his 8k PR at the Horizon League Championships with a time of 27:14. Additional standout performances for Felton include placing 17th at the Golden Grizzly Open (20:20), and fi nishing 35th at the Detroit Titan Invite (21:58). “Sam ran well as a rookie,” Murray said. “I think he will be able to step in and impact the team after gaining experience during last season.”

A group of six student-athletes will make up the freshmen class for the Titans. Ylli Alla, Caleb Cox, Colin Creagh, Ryan Hofsess, George Holman, and Tony Rote will all compete for Detroit with the opportunity to impact the squad. “The freshmen class will have to adjust to the longer college race and keep up with the daily training pace,” Murray said. “Alla and Creagh have the chance to be impact runners on this team as freshmen. They have run well in longer races and we will need them in the mix for the year to go well.”

It would be huge for the freshman class to perform well as Detroit only has two juniors and two sophomores on the roster. It can be challenging for newcomers, but Murray thinks his rookies will improve in time. “Rote and Cox are also fi t for longer races,” Murray said. “It will depend on how quickly they can adjust to see if they can challenge for varsity spots. Hofsess and Holman might be more middle distance type runners. Hofsess may be able to adjust a bit easier because of his time at Milford. George comes to Detroit with only a couple years of experience under his belt.”

SEASON OUTLOOKSEASON OUTLOOKDetroit will look to improve on last year’s eighth place fi nish at the Horizon League Championships with a core group of upperclassmen returning to the program. Kirstin Mooney and Kristie Ferrans make up the senior class, while Sarah Martinez, Katrina Oberski, and Katie Weishaar all return as juniors.

“We have potential to improve this season,” Head Coach Guy Murray explained. “We won’t have much room for error. All of our runners will need to be at their best in order to move up the Horizon League standings.”

Mooney claimed 29th place at the Horizon League Championship with a time of 19:31. Mooney also set a 6k personal record at Penn State by clocking in at 24:20. She ended the season at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional with a time of 24:30 which landed her in 192nd place.

“Kirstin ran well for us last year, and she is coming off a big breakthrough after a successful track and fi eld season,” Murray said. “I think Kirstin should be there as one of our top runners this fall.”

Ferrans was very limited in 2010 due to an injury. She ran at the National Catholic Championships last September and fi nished in 20:52. “Kristie is able to come back after suffering an injury last season,” Murray explained. “She is an experienced runner, and I am sure that she will be making a contribution at the end of the season.”

Four juniors are in the mix to improve the team in 2011. Sarah Martinez will look to take a step forward after competing in every single race a year ago. “The team needs Sarah to have a big year as an upperclassman after showing potential her fi rst two years,” Murray said.

Martinez set her 5k PR at the Horizon League Championships with a time of 20:30. Her second best time of the 2010 season came at Louisville when she clocked in at 20:34. Martinez ended the year with a time of 25:56 at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional (6k).

Katrina Oberski peaked at the right time as she set her 5k PR at the HL Championships with a time of 19:40 for 33rd place. She broke the 20 minute barrier two other times while competing at the Running Fit Detroit Titan Invite (19:57 – 14th) and the Louisville Classic (19:42 – 83rd). The junior ended the year running 24:53 at the 6k Regional course.

“Katrina has continually improved and I believe that she is ready to be at the front of the group,” Murray said.

Katie Weishaar and Olivia Smid will try to add depth to the junior class. “Olivia could be a pleasant surprise,” Murray said. “She worked hard this summer and has the chance to move up which would help us. We are also looking for Katie to get healthy so that she can get back to her best.”

Two Titans make up the sophomore class in 2011. Torrie Eger and Rachel Hofsess earned valuable experience by competing heavily as freshmen.

SEASON OUTLOOKSEASON OUTLOOK“Torrie got some good experience last year and if she can get healthy I think that she could move up and make the pack very strong,” Murray said.

Eger posted her best time of the season at the Horizon League Championships with a time of 20:55 which put her in 66th place overall. She was also close to that pace at the National Catholic Championships as she fi nished in 20:58 for 155th place.

Hofsess set her 5k PR at the Louisville Classic last year. She crossed the fi nish line at 19:46 to earn 89th place. “Having a year of experience will help Rachel,” Murray said. “We need her to run like she did at the Louisville race last year.”

Hofsess placed 22nd at the Running Fit Detroit Titan Invite (20:51), and 24th at the Golden Grizzly Open (16:06 – 4k).

“We should have a good pack,” Murray said. “The team will need a front runner to emerge, or the pack will have to be very tight while moving up.”

The Titans will have three freshmen on the team looking to gain experience in 2011. “Making a quick adjustment to the collegiate level is critical for our newcomers,” Murray said.

The 2011 schedule is similar to the slate in 2010. Detroit will host the 25th Annual Running Fit Detroit Titan Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 10 this year. Action will begin at 11:15 a.m. The Horizon League Championships will take place on Oct. 29, and the NCAA Great Lakes Regional will held in Toledo, Ohio on Nov. 12.

25th Annual Running Fit-Detroit Titan Cross Country Invitational

One of the best traditions and the longest running events hosted by Detroit is the Annual Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invitational. The 2011 edition marks the 25th straight year UDM has hosted the event, which is held in a beautiful setting at Cass Benton State Park in Northville. The course provides a challenge for all runners as Cass Benton is one of the oldest and hilliest areas of Hines Park.

Besides the men’s and women’s college race, the day also includes two open races for men and women as well as a special Tommy Titan Future Legends Kid’s Race , which allows kids the opportunity to race the happy UDM mascot up the fi nal hill of the course.

TITAN LEGENDSTITAN LEGENDS

Bonnie (Fitzpatrick) Wood2007 Titan Hall of Fame InducteeIn 2007, Bonnie (Fitzpatrick) Wood became the fi rst female cross country and track and fi eld star to be inducted into the Titan Hall of Fame. Wood, whose husband Bill is a former Titan basketball player, was the most decorated individual on UDM’s fi rst women’s cross country and track teams. Between 1984 and ‘87, she earned All-Conference recognition in cross country in all four of her varsity seasons. She led U-D to the MCC Championship in 1986 and again a year later as a senior. She also won the conference individual championship in 1987.

Kim Hemstreet (Top)2002 NCAA Cross Country Qualifi erKim Hemstreet graduated from UDM in 2002, but her legacy lives on as she still remains the only women’s cross country or track and fi eld athlete to compete at the NCAA Division I Championships. Her decorated career included three All-Horizon League accolades, as well as the magical 2002 season that saw her win the Horizon League Championship in 17:33, taking home HL Athlete of the Year honors. She moved onto the NCAA Great Lakes Regional fi nishing 12th in 21:45 and then earned a top 100 fi nish at the NCAA Division I Championships with a time of 21:13. She capped off that season showing her true Titan student-athlete character by being named to the USTFCCA All-Academic team.

Overall, he earned a top 65 fi nish in all four of his regional appearances, with his best place of 26th in 1999. A four-time All-MCC honoree, McPhee claimed fourth in 1999 and 2001, seventh in 1997 and eighth in 1998. He won the Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invitational twice (1999, 2001) and still holds the Cass Benton course record of 20:04 in 1999. In 2001, he became the fi rst Titan harrier to win the Michigan Intercollegiate, establishing a course 8k record of 25:37 at Kensington Metropark.

Ken Dubois (Top)2010 Titan Hall of Fame InducteeA CoSIDA Academic All-American in 1987 and ’88, Dubois was inducted into the Titan Hall of Fame in 2010. He ended his career by fi nishing runner-up at the 1987 MCC cross country championship and 31st at the Great Lakes Regional. He placed in the top 100 at the regional four times, including three times in the top 40. His best fi nish was in 1985 when he claimed 23rd in 32:53. A three-time All-MCC cross country runner, Dubois also excelled on the track setting the school record in the 5,000 meters. The Detroit Titans cross country and track & fi eld program has always maintained a strong relationship with alumni. At the 2009 Horizon League Cross Country Championships, hosted by Detroit at Kensington Metropark, a group of well-decorated Titan harriers were on hand and presented the fi nal awards at the conclusion of the event.

Patrick Liederbach earned second team All-League honors in 2009 and his award was presented by former Titan and All-Horizon League performer Jim Furkis.

The Titans have plenty of support from family, friends and student-athletes, demonstrated here by UDM women’s lacrosse players Emily Boissonneault and Megan Wallace, who came out to cheer on Detroit at the 2009 Horizon League Championships.

Membership includes Butler University, Cleveland State University, the University of Detroit Mercy, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Loyola University Chicago, Valparaiso University, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Wright State University and Youngstown State University.

Th e Horizon League’s primary focus is on adding value to the educational experience through its four platforms: athletic performance, academic achievement, community outreach, and personal responsibility and accountability. It is the League’s belief that athletics is a powerful and visible resource tool that can be used to enhance student-athletes’ collegiate experience. Th e Horizon League’s goals are to enhance the holistic university experience for the student-athlete, to create an affi liation of institutions with similar athletic goals, and to adhere to the principals of integrity, diversity, excellence and growth. Th e Horizon League sponsors competition in 19 sports - nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and fi eld, outdoor track and fi eld and tennis) and ten for women (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, indoor track and fi eld, outdoor track and fi eld, tennis and volleyball).

Th e League receives automatic bids to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s volleyball, and for the fi rst time in League history, women’s golf. Th e Horizon League is headquartered in Indianapolis, the “Amateur Sports Capital of the World,” with offi ces in the Pan American Plaza (201 S. Capitol

Avenue), located a block from Lucas Oil Stadium and just minutes from Conseco Fieldhouse, the State Capitol Building, Victory Field (home of the Indianapolis Indians) and the NCAA national offi ce.

A PROUD HISTORYFounded on June 16, 1979, as the Midwestern City Conference with six charter members, the League changed its name to the Midwestern Collegiate Conference in 1985 and added women’s sports for the 1986-87 academic year. Charter members of the conference included current members Butler and Loyola as well as the University of Evansville, Oklahoma City University, Oral Roberts University and Xavier University. Among other current members, Detroit joined in 1980, and Cleveland State, UIC, Green Bay, Milwaukee and Wright State came aboard in 1994 (along with Northern Illinois University) in the largest non-merger conference expansion in history. Youngstown State joined in 2001 and Valparaiso in 2007. On June 4, 2001, the Horizon League unveiled its current name and ushered in a new dynamic direction that has brought the League closer to its stated goal of being one of the nation’s top ten collegiate athletic conferences with a focus on enhancing the student-athletes’ experience by upgrading the League’s market and competitive positions.

ATHLETIC SUCCESSIn the past few years, the Horizon League has enjoyed unprecedented success on the national stage, highlighted by Butler’s second consecutive appearance in the NCAA men’s basketball championship game appearance where the Bulldogs fell to Connecticut, 53-41. Th e Horizon League has compiled a 19-11 record in the past nine years in the NCAA tournament, ranking seventh among all collegiate conferences for winning percentage. Green Bay’s women’s basketball team became the league’s fi rst team to reach the Sweet 16 in 2011, knocking off Michigan State in the second round before going toe-to-toe with No. 1 seed Baylor in the regional semifi nals. Th e Phoenix earned a No. 5 seed in the tournament, going 34-2 on the year and holding a perfect 16-0 mark in Horizon League play. Men’s soccer has tasted victory in seven out of the last nine years (Milwaukee 2002-05,

UIC 2006-08), with UIC just one win away from the College Cup in 2007. In 2011, Butler was consistently ranked in the top 10 of the nation, earning the No. 13 national seed after becoming the last unbeaten team in the country. In softball, League teams won a game in the national tournament four straight years earlier in the decade (UIC 2002, 2004; Wright State 2003; Green Bay 2005) while advancing into the second round in women’s soccer three of the last six seasons (Detroit 2004, Milwaukee 2005-06). Butler’s Victoria Mitchell became the League’s fi rst NCAA individual champion when she won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

ACADEMIC SUCCESSHorizon League student-athletes also excel in the classroom as more than 500 have been named to the Academic Honor Roll each of the past nine semesters for carrying a grade-point average of 3.2 or better, including more than 700 for the last four semesters. 24 student-athletes were named to ESPN Th e Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District teams in 2010-11, while six earned Academic All-America honors.

COMMUNITY SERVICEIn addition to its athletics success, the Horizon League has secured a well-earned reputation for its community service initiatives. Each January, member institutions partner with local elementary schools for an art, music and essay contest highlighting the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with winners recognized at League games on the weekend of MLK Day. Th e Horizon League Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) also has continued a tradition of working with youth in Indianapolis during its annual summer meeting. In addition, SAAC is partnering with Special Olympics, putting on events for Olympians in each community. Several League men’s basketball coaches coached barefoot to support Samaritan’s Feet and Coaches vs. Cancer initiatives, and the League’s schools and fans donate to Komen for the Cure for breast cancer awareness during its annual women’s basketball championship. On campus, student-athletes have raised money and awareness for such causes as breast cancer, diabetes and hurricane relief, while hosting blood drives, neighborhood clean-ups, Big Brother/Big Sister programs and more.

SPORTSMANSHIPOne of the Horizon League’s points of emphasis is fostering collegial environments for competition among student-athletes, coaches, administrators and fans in a pro-active approach. Among

the vehicles is the Ethical Conduct Pledge, which is signed each season by student-athletes, coaches, offi cials, and campus and League administrators. Its purpose is to make all the involved groups aware of the Horizon League expectations of behavior during conference events.

DEMOGRAPHICSHorizon League institutions boast a combined enrollment of more than 130,000 plus nearly a quarter-million living alumni centered in the League’s Midwest footprint. League media markets include fi ve of the nation’s top 35 in Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Indianapolis and Milwaukee, covering more than ten million television households and encompassing more than nine percent of the nation’s television audience.

GOVERNANCETh e Horizon League is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of the ten member institutions’ chief executive offi cers. Dr. Ronald Berkman, President of Cleveland State, serves as Board Chair through June 30, 2012. John Parry, Director of Athletics at Cleveland State, serves as chair of the Executive Council, and Beth Goetz, Associate Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator at Butler, is the Vice Chair and Shelia Patterson of Cleveland State serves as chair of the Faculty Athletics Representatives.

LEADERSHIPJonathan B. ( Jon) LeCrone is in his 20th year as Commissioner of the Horizon League, having been named to the position on May 11, 1992, and is the fi fth-longest tenured commissioner among the 31 Division I conferences. He is the fi fth commissioner in League history, succeeding Daniel B. “Tucker” DiEdwardo (1989-92), James W. Shaff er (1984-89), Cecil N. Coleman (1980-84) and James J. McCaff erty (1979-80). LeCrone is in the fi nal year of a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Leadership Council after completing a fi ve-year term on the Division I Men’s Basketball Committee.

VISIBILITYTh e Horizon League has enhanced its media visibility with a number of initiatives. Th e League is in a three-year agreement with ESPN that includes selected regular-season men’s basketball action (ESPN2) and the men’s championship game (ESPN) and features increased exposures each year on ESPNU plus inclusion in the annual O’Reilly ESPNU BracketBusters, one of college basketball’s premier in-season events.

HORIZON LEAGUE NETWORKHaving streamed more than 2,000 free, live events in the last fi ve years, the Horizon League is a recognized leader in video streaming, through the Horizon League Network (HLN). HLN takes viewers inside the conference, featuring student-athlete profi les, weekly highlight shows, comprehensive coverage of all 19 Horizon League championships and other special programming. In 2010-11, HLN and HorizonLeague.com experienced unprecedented growth as more than 300,000 unique visitors across 149 countries/territories watched HLN coverage. Th rough the League’s partnership with WebStream Productions, Horizon-League.com integrated both HorizonLeagueNetwork.tv and HorizonLeague.org, leading to record visitors to the new site. Th e 2010-11 season featured the 2,000th live event streamed by the League.

Th e main goal of the Strength and Conditioning Department is to help the student-athlete improve physically and mentally in their respective sport. Th is will be accomplished in such a way that is safe and effi cient for each individual athlete. As the student-athlete participates in these activities we will work to lessen the possibility of injury or re-injury. If an injury should occur, we will work with the Sports Medicine Staff and the student-athlete to complete rehabilitation.

Each team will have an individualized program based on their particular sport. Each program takes into account the intensity level, the physical demands, and skill involved in each individual sport and also each individual student-athlete. All teams and individuals will be subject to performance tests that will help design each program and also will help to determine the success of the program.

Th e Strength and Conditioning Staff will work with each individual coach at all times. Each coach will receive updated attendance, evaluation, and comments on a regular basis about each student-athlete. Communication is the key to success in the weight room and on the playing fi eld.

Th e Titans condition and train in the Larry Bleach Weight Room, located in Calihan Hall. All UDM student-athletes are trained under the supervision of two full-time certifi ed strength and conditioning coaches, as well as two intern assistants. Every member of the Titan strength and conditioning staff is assigned a team, which allows daily interaction between the athletes and the coaches. Such interaction is a tremendous asset when developing a program that best serves the athlete and the team.

In the past three years, the weight room expanded by over 400 square feet. Olympic style platforms, squat racks, stretch and other auxiliary speed equipment have also been added, all designed and implemented to improve the Titans’ speed and power. Th e center also features the ONS Performance nutritional shake, which is designed to help every athlete recover from training and conditioning with a supplement increase in their protein and carbohydrate intake.

Th e Detroit Titan strength and conditioning coaching staff has not only helped the Titan student-athletes, but professional athletes as well. UDM graduate and current New Orleans Hornets guard Willie Green comes back to use the facilities during the off season.

When talking about students who compete in a varsity sport, the term typically used is “student-athlete.” Th e word “student” comes fi rst, and that’s the way the University of Detroit Mercy approaches all of its athletic team members. Although performance in competition is important, they are students fi rst, and athletes second, with their performance in the classroom plenty important in Titan Territory.

UDM’s Center for Student-Athlete Development, one of the fi rst of its kind, off ers programs for academic classes, drug education, student enhancement and works to improve communication skills. All 19 varsity teams are encouraged to take full advantage of the programs off ered at the center. Th e center also heads up the NCAA Life Skills Program, which focuses on the student in student-athlete and how to deal with issues that all student-athletes today must face. Th rough seminars, guest speakers and NCAA videos, student-athletes are made aware of issues such as gambling and drug and alcohol abuse, and how to deal with these concerns.

Th e center is made possible, in part, by a grant from the NCAA. In conjunction with the staff of the University Learning Center, members of the center’s staff teach UAS 107, “Athletes in Transition,” each year. All freshman and transfer student-athletes must take this course during their studies at UDM. Th e course deals with how student-athletes can make the transition from high school to college. Th is important class teaches student-athletes to deal with time and stress management, study skills and the importance of good nutritional habits. Another example of Detroit’s commitment to its student-athletes’ academic excellence is the Athletic Academic Coordinator’s post. Since the position was created, UDM’s graduation rate for student-athletes has steadily risen. Assistant Athletic Director For NCAA Compliance Steve Corder, no stranger to collegiate athletics as he played soccer for Detroit from 1994-98, and his staff carefully track each Titan’s academic progress to make sure they are on the right path toward graduation.

In addition, student-athletes are helped with their tutorial needs through the use of the student-run Learning Center, where professors and students donate their time as tutors.

Th e student-athletes’ academic progress is closely monitored and study table is set up to assist the Titans with any and all academic areas, including providing tutors and a writing lab. Th e center is open daily and also has evening hours to work around a student-athlete’s busy schedule. All freshmen must take part in the study table, as well as other student-athletes who have not yet achieved a 2.75 GPA.

Th e University of Detroit Mercy is committed to the principles of institutional control in operating our athletic department. We are responsible for adhering to the rules, regulations and spirit of the NCAA, Horizon League and the University.

Th e University of Detroit Mercy Compliance Offi ce directs this eff ort and acts a primary resource concerning NCAA rules, regulations and compliance issues. We ensure that our institution complies with all NCAA standards and we are responsible for monitoring all athletic programs to assure compliance.

DETROIT TITAN HALL OF FAMEDETROIT TITAN HALL OF FAME UDM established its Sports Hall of Fame in 1977 in order to honor those student-athletes, coaches and administrators who have helped develop the successful tradition of Titan Athletics. Th e Hall of Fame now has 112 members, following the 10 latest additions made on Homecoming Weekend on Jan. 26, 2010.

Th e 2002 induction dinner was truly one to remember. Th e inductees included two of the Titans’ former basketball All-Americans, Terry Tyler and John Long – or Th under and Lightning, as they were aff ectionately known during their playing days – as well as the 1960 Titan football team as a unit. Additionally, the beautiful new Hall of Fame display in the Calihan Hall lobby was unveiled that night for a crowd which would fi ll the arena’s main fl oor during the induction dinner.

Long and Tyler were part of one of the winningest eras of Titan basketball, having helped their team to an 86-25 record over their four years combined. Th ey helped the Titans to an NCAA Tournament berth in 1977, and an NIT appearance one year later.

Long was the only player ever to lead the Titans in scoring for four straight varsity seasons, and he’s still the second-leading point producer in school history. Tyler, meanwhile, is the all-time Detroit leader for blocked shots in a game, a season and a career. He is also second in career fi eld goal percentage and sixth in scoring.

Th e pair’s old coach, none other than Dick Vitale, was the keynote speaker at his former players’ induction dinner. Th e present-day ESPN/ABC telecaster kept the audience captivated for more than an hour with his memories of coaching the Titans.

Th e 1960 football squad became the fi rst team ever to be inducted into the Hall of Fame en masse. Th at team fi nished the season 7-2 – the winningest U-D record of the post-World War II era. Two of those victories, over Cincinnati and Xavier, came by shutout. Future pro stars Larry Vargo, Bruce Maher, Steve Stonebreaker and Jerry Gross were all part of the 1960 Titan roster.

Th e most recent induction class included four former basketball players – Joe Kopicki, Jermaine Jackson, Rashad Phillips and, from the women’s team, Cassandra Pack – as well as former stars from baseball (Pat Adams and Mike Pesci), cross country/track and fi eld (Ken Dubois and Kim Jess), golf (Adam Walicki) and tennis (Maria Pandele).

Th e 2010 Titan Hall of Fame Class is inducted at halftime of the men’s basketball game against Wright State on Jan. 26.

ATHLETIC DIRECTORATHLETIC DIRECTORKeri Gaither was appointed as University of Detroit Mercy’s Director of Athletics in May of 2007, less

than six months after being asked to serve as Interim Director of Athletics. Soon after taking the helm of

Titan athletics, Gaither announced the expansion of the Detroit Titans Division I sports program from 16

to 19 teams with the addition of men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse and men’s tennis, all of which began play in

2008-09. In her fi rst two years, Gaither also expanded the athletic staff by adding eight full-time positions to

the department, directed the building and completion of a new $1.6 million all-purpose synthetic turf fi eld and

track, and was responsible for the hiring of men’s basketball coach Ray McCallum, women’s basketball coach

Autumn Rademacher, and softball coach Sunny Jones. Gaither recently completed a successful fundraising

campaign for the renovation of the men’s basketball offi ce suite and recently completed tennis complex that

includes eight new tennis courts, a tennis pavilion and a new grass fi eld to accommodate the lacrosse and soccer

teams.

Gaither was recognized for her strong leadership as UDM’s Director of Athletics when she was appointed to

the University of Detroit Mercy’s (UDM) senior leadership team as a member of the Associate Vice President’s

group in June of 2007. For the three years preceding her appointment as A.D., Gaither served as second in

command for the Detroit Titans Athletic Department and also supervised nine Titan women’s varsity sports

as the Senior Associate Athletic Director. During her tenure as Senior Associate A.D., Gaither played an instrumental role in the planning and

implementation of women’s golf in 2004 when it became UDM’s 16th varsity team. Prior to her selection as A.D., Gaither had served in several

key administrative roles for the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics including stints as Senior Woman Administrator and Director of Business

Operations.

Gaither Chaired the Detroit Local Organizing Committee (DLOC) for the 2009 NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four which was played in front

of a record-setting crowd of 72,922 at Ford Field in Detroit as the University of Detroit Mercy served as the host institution. As the DLOC Chair,

Gaither provided strong leadership for the DLOC and maintained ultimate responsibility for the local operations of the Final Four event. Gaither held

the same position, in addition to being designated Tournament Director, for the 2008 NCAA Men’s Basketball Midwest Regional.

As a current member of the Horizon League’s Executive Council, Gaither is actively involved with League operations. She currently serves on the

League’s Men’s Basketball Strategic Planning Committee and has served on both the fi nance and television committees. In July of 2010, Gaither was

appointed a new member of the Executive Committee of the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association. She is one of just 13 members serving

on the Executive Committee, which works on behalf of the membership of the D1-AAA, in addition to its President and fi ve other offi cers.

Gaither was also appointed to the NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee (MOIC) in September of 2009. As one of six Division

I members on the 15-person committee, Gaither is currently in year two of a four-year term. Th e MOIC was formed to review issues related to

the interests of ethnic minorities and women with a focus on education and welfare of minority student-athletes, as well as the enhancement of

opportunities for ethnic minorities and women in coaching, athletics administration, offi ciating and the NCAA governance structure.

In March of 2008, Gaither was presented with the Phenomenal Women’s Ashley Gray Legacy Award by the University of Detroit Mercy’s Student

BYRNE WINS BIG BREAK

Former Titan David Byrne made Detroit proud as he won the Golf Channel’s reality television show Big Break Indian Wells in July of 2011. Th e victory gave Byrne a number of prizes, with the best of all a chance to play on the PGA Tour giving him an automatic exemption to the 2012 Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Along with the opportunity to play in the 2012 Zurich Classic, he took home over $70,000 in cash, a paid trip for two back to the Indian Wells Golf Resort, an Adams golf endorsement deal and a $10,000 shopping spree to Dicks Sporting Goods. Byrne outperformed 10 other contestants on the 10-episode series that was shot at Indian Wells Golf Resort in Indian Wells, Calif. When he competes at the Zurich Classic, he will be the fi rst Titan in school history to play on the PGA Tour.

RAY McCALLUM TO REPRESENT USA BASKETBALL

Sophomore Ray McCallum continued to fi nd himself in the national spotlight. Over the summer, he participated as a counselor in the LeBron James Skills Academy and was one of 10 collegiate point guards invited to the Deron Williams Skills Academy. Th en in August, he received an invitation to attend USA Basketball’s World University Games training camp, where he eventually made the fi nal 12-man roster. Th e squad practiced and trained in Colorado Springs, Colo., before embarking to China on Aug. 8 to begin competition. Despite being the youngest athlete on the US squad, and a late addition to the original invitees to the training camp, he impressed coaches enough to make the team and represent the US as the red, white and blue looked for its 14th all-time medal in the competition. McCallum teamed with players from national powerhouses like Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan State, Notre Dame and Syracuse. Th e team was coached by Matt Painter of Purdue, while Cuonzo Martin of Tennessee and Butler’s Brad Stevens served as assistants.

APR REPORT HAS TITANS RATED HIGH

Th e NCAA honored more than 900 Division I sports teams for their high marks academically last spring, including a pair of University of Detroit Mercy teams that achieved perfect scores. Th e Titan men’s golfers and men’s fencing teams each earned perfect 1000’s in the latest edition of the NCAA’s Public Recognition Awards, released in May. Th e NCAA announcement showed that 909 teams have earned the awards, based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rates. Th ese awards are given each year to teams scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport with their APRs. Th rough its innovative APR, which provides an annual scorecard of academic achievement, the NCAA tracks the classroom performance of student-athletes on every Division I sports team. A week later, Detroit brought home high marks in the NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate as 16 Titan teams were at or above the NCAA’s minimum standard (925) for the entire seven years since the association instituted the APR system (men’s and women’s lacrosse and men’s tennis are all entering their third year of varsity status at the school). Th e Detroit men’s fencing and men’s golf team each scored perfect multi-year 1000 APR scores, while women’s basketball, women’s golf and women’s tennis were all cited with perfect 1000 scores in the 2009-10 academic year.

DETROIT TITAN ATHLETICS TO NAME COURT IN HONOR OF

DICK VITALE

Dick Vitale received a tremendous honor from Detroit as the Titans announced that they will rename its basketball court in Calihan Hall after the legendary college basketball fi gure. Th e Dick Vitale Court at Calihan Hall will be dedicated in conjunction with a nationally-televised men’s basketball game against Big EAST foe St. John’s on December 5, 2011 on ESPN2. Vitale will be celebrating his 32nd anniversary of calling games for ESPN at the event having started on the sports television outlet on Dec. 5, 1979.

Vitale coached at the University of Detroit (1973-77), compiling a winning percentage of .722 (78-30), which included a 21-game winning streak during the 1976-77 season when the team participated in the NCAA Tournament. Included in the streak was a victory in Milwaukee over Al McGuire’s eventual national champion Marquette team. In April 1977, Vitale was named Athletic Director at Detroit and later that year was named the United Fund’s Detroit Man of the Year.Th e Dick Vitale Court at Calihan Hall project will feature a brand new, state-of-the-art hardwood fl oor for the home of the Detroit Titans men’s and women’s basketball teams. Fundraising for the project will include several other key improvements to the facility, including men’s basketball “Phase II” renovations, which began with new offi ces and upgraded locker room accommodations.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT A PRIORITY FOR DETROIT

Th e University of Detroit Mercy Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) did a great job as always in trying to help out the local community. Th roughout the school year, SAAC got together for a number of community initiatives, including the highly successful Sandwich Bus. Th e event gives Titan student-athletes a chance to come together in preparing a lunch and distributing it to the local community. SAAC also helped raise money for the Michigan Special Olympics with a Pie In Th e Face Fundraiser during a men’s lacrosse game as well as hosting a coat drive during a men’s basketball game for Nardly Human Services, Inc. Other student-athletes were involved outside of the fi eld and classroom too as men’s lacrosse players Brandon Davenport, Matt Lining and Adam Parrottino participated in a Habitat for Humanity project near Grosse Pointe, while men’s basketball standouts Eli Holman and Ray McCallum greeted attendees and showed support of the United Way and downtown Detroit at the annual Blocktoberfest. UDM also partnered with the Southeastern Michigan “Toys for Tots” during Th anksgiving Weekend where the Titans played host to the Legend’s Classic.
