The Kentucky track and field and cross country squadsbenefit from some of the finest facilities in intercolle-

giate track, including the impressive indoor facility NutterField House—the host site of the 2009 SEC Championships.

The field house is an $8.5 million climate-controlledstructure that is used for winter conditioning and indoortrack and field meets.

The facility features an artificial turf football playing fieldof 108,000 square feet, surrounded by a six-lane, 290-metertrack. One of the most unique features of this 132,000-squarefoot, multi-million dollar showplace is the electronic nettingsystem. The system allows for different combinations of sportsto practice safely and simultaneously by dividing the playingfield into multiple practice areas.

In addition to the indoor facilities, the University of Ken-tucky’s Shively Track has been a fixture on the UK campussince 1959, when the site was developed and later named inhonor of former Director of Athletics Bernie Shively.

The Kentuckytrack and field

and cross countryteams call ShivelyTraining Centerhome for strengthand conditioning. The 2,000-squarefoot complex isunder the directionof Coach StephanieTracey-Simmons

and features a variety of free weight equipment, which comple-ments the training philosophy of the Shively staff.

The primary focus of the facility is the development ofcore strength using ground-based, multi-joint lifting throughuse of the Olympic lifts. By incorporating this explosive styleof lifting, athletes become more powerful, resulting in anincrease in speed. The core of the athlete’s body also istrained and complemented with a variety of lifts, includingsquats, lunges, plyometrics, presses, pulls, trunk rotation andabdominal exercise. Through the combination of these exer-cises, the athletes are better able to reach their goals.

Another major focus of the strength staff is the develop-ment of sport-specific speed, agility and conditioning. Thisfacet of training is organized through different types of foot-work patterns, drills and linear fitness. While nearly all ofUK’s Olympic sports teams train at Shively, they also take partin “Speed School,” a twice-weekly seven-week training sessionin Nutter Field House.

The Shively Sports Complex and Nutter TrainingCenter are multi-million dollar training facilities for

the UK track and field and cross country programs.

I n collegiateathletics, there

is no substitute forproper health careand medical treat-ment.

Kentucky isblessed to haveone of the finesttraining staffs inthe nation, whichincludes six full-time athletic train-ers as well as grad-uate assistants andstudent assistants.

The trainers also work closely with team physicians and avariety of consultants that cover every medical specialty.

Altogether, the medical staff handles the needs of athletes inall 22 sports at Kentucky.

The UK athletic trainers work in an outstanding facility. The Nutter Center training room covers more than 5,000square feet and includes ample space for taping and treat-ment. Inside the training room is a modern rehabilitationarea and whirlpool therapy area, as well as physicians’ andtrainers’ offices.

The latest addition to the Nutter training room is the“Swim-Ex,” a state-of-the-art aquatic therapy system that isused for the rehabilitation of injuries.

2009 CROSS COUNTRY OUTLOOK

I n 2008 Kentucky cross country ended theyear the where they wanted – competing at

the NCAA National Championships – and leftthe meet with a goal to repeat that feat andimprove in 2009.

The UK women wrapped up last season atthe NCAA Team Championships for the firsttime since a National Runner-Up finish in 1989.The 2008 Wildcats placed 31st overall in theirtrip to the Championships and finished the yearreceiving votes in the final USTFCCCA Nation-al Poll. A gutsy, second-place performance at theNCAA Southeast Regional in Clemmons, N.C.,propelled the Wildcats to their fifth NCAAappearance in school history.

Kentucky will miss the services of departedseniors Jenna and Jessica Ortman, both 2009All-Southeast Regional selections, and the veter-an leadership of Andrea Halasek a 2008 All-Southeast Regional runner. However, the Wild-cat women return four harriers from theirNCAA appearance last season.

On the men’s side, Adam Henken returnsafter becoming the first Wildcat man to run atthe NCAA Cross Country Championships since2003 when UK competed as a team. A fewweeks earlier, Henken placed fifth overall at theNCAA Southeast Regional to automaticallyqualify for the Championship Meet as an indi-vidual, while earning his first All-SoutheastRegional honor. The Wildcat men are an experi-enced team after losing just one of their top six

runners at the Regional a year ago.UK head coach Don Weber is confident that

the recent progression of both teams will contin-ue this season.

“We anticipate both teams will be better thanwe have been in the past, so we are eager to seewhere we are at the beginning of the season andhopefully everyone will be eager and encouragedabout where we go from there,” Weber said.

WOMEN’S TEAM PREVIEWThe story on the women’s team may not be

just the four returning NCAA veterans from lastseason but the influx of nine talented newcom-ers, some of which could contribute to the teamimmediately.

Junior Katherine Peterson and senior LindsayPetri were two of the five women who scored ineach meet they ran in 2008, including theNCAA Championship meet. Peterson consis-tently ran towards the front of the UK field, never finishing below fourth on the team lastyear. Petri could not have picked a better time torun her personal-best 6K run than at the 2008NCAA Southeast Regional. There Petri’s 36th-place finish as the fifth Wildcat across the finishline sealed UK’s trip to the NCAA Champi-onships by securing a second-place team finishand an automatic bid.

Senior Claire Laverty and junior SuzanneHolt also return with NCAA experience. Holtran in every meet in 2008 while Laverty com-

peted in the final four races of the year after bat-tling early-season injuries. Both ladies are healthyand confident going into the 2009 season.

Sophomore Audrey Holbrook will add depthto the squad after competing in three early-seasonraces a year ago.

Incoming freshman Chelsea Oswald comesto Lexington fresh off of a Nike Indoor NationalChampionship in the 5,000m run and an All-American cross country performance in theFootlocker National Qualifier in her final year ofhigh school.

Classmate Jessica Zangmeister is anotherincoming freshman that ran at the national levelin the Footlocker National Championships. Zang-meister shattered her high school record books inmiddle distance and distance events. As a highschool junior the new Wildcat claimed the3,200m run indoor state championship in hernative Ohio.

Three additional newcomers also hold statehigh school individual event championships.Altogether, five of the nine new Wildcats haveregional and national meet experience.

“We have had steady improvement inmy tenure at UK in the last two years goingfrom ninth in the region to fourth to second

and qualifying for the national championships,”said UK assistant coach for cross country JohnMortimer. “I feel really good about this squadcoming in because we have a youthful squadthat is heavy with talent including nine fresh-man women and a couple of key returners.Assuming that our upperclassmen can lead andour talented freshmen live up to their billing, Ithink it’s going to be a pretty successful year.”

Kentucky native Suzanne Holt returns in 2009 as one offour Wildcat women with NCAA experience.

UK freshmen (from left) Cally Macumber, JessicaZangmeister and Chelsea Oswald are expected to makea major contribution to the 2009 women’s team.

MEN’S TEAM PREVIEW

The UK men’s team returns five of its top sixrunners from a team that finished 13th at the2008 NCAA Southeast Regional.

Junior Adam Henken finished first for theWildcats in six of the seven meets he ran lastseason. After qualifying as an individual at theNCAA Championships, the All-SoutheastRegional honoree should provide a strong build-ing block for this year’s team.

Newcomer Luis Orta might be new to thecross country team but not to Wildcat trackfans. Orta set three freshman records during the2009 track season, just weeks after joining UKin January. A native of Venezuela, Orta ran forhis national cross country team in international

competition. In 2007 he finished 80th overall atthe World Cross Country Championships.

Mortimer cites Henken and Orta as keys tothe Wildcats’ success this season.

“We had a youthful team last year and theyear before and now that youthful team is start-ing to mature and become a more experiencedteam,” said Mortimer. “We’re led by AdamHenken who qualified for the national champi-onships as an individual and Luis Orta. Theirability to contribute on the cross country courseis going to be really important to us.”

Sophomores John Luttrell, Colin Heenan alongwith senior Will Rover also return from theSoutheast Regional team in addition toHenken. Luttrell and Heenan ran in everymeet for the Wildcats last season whileRover missed one race. Luttrell scored infour meets while never placing belowsixth on the team. Heenan placed firston the team at the opening meet lastseason and placed three more timesfor the Cats. Rover ran his best raceas a Wildcat at the SEC Champi-onships, finishing second onthe team with a personal-best10K time.

A pair of state high schoolcross country champions will add depth to theexperienced UK squad as freshmen. Matt Son-nenfeldt, the 2008 Tennessee state cross countrychampion, and Patrick McGregor, the 2007Alabama state cross country champion, shouldcontribute to the team immediately.

MEET THE WILDCATS

Mitch Barnhart isin his eighth

year at the University ofKentucky, with unpar-alleled accomplishmentsin his past and unprece-dented goals for thefuture.

When he arrived in2002, Barnhart’s firstmove was to totally

support all 22 varsity sports with the maximumnumber of scholarships and coaches, along withthe facilities, equipment and support staff neededto make those teams successful.

The commitment to fully fund every sportproduced never-before-seen successes in UK ath-letics, with first-ever Southeastern Conferencechampionships in baseball, men’s golf andwomen’s tennis.

Perhaps the biggest on-field turnaround hasbeen in football, where Barnhart’s hire of RichBrooks has led the Wildcats to bowl wins in three

consecutive years, the first time that has beenaccomplished in UK’s 117 seasons in the sport.

In order to make the dreams a reality, Barn-hart spearheaded record-breaking growth in phil-anthropic giving, ticket sales and a comprehen-sive multi-media rights agreement.

Barnhart’s connection to UK student-athletes isevident by his individual interaction and dedica-tion to provide the support services necessary tomeet their needs. UK Athletics spends more than$1.5 million annually on its nationally renownedCenter for Academic and Tutorial Services. Healso began the CATSPYs, an annual awards pro-gram that honors the best of UK Athletics.

Additional initiatives begun under Barnhart’sleadership include the UK Athletics Hall of Fameand the Joe Craft Center, a $30 million facilitythat includes new practice and administrativespace for a variety of sports.

Barnhart’s influence reaches far beyond thefields of competition. Despite athletics’ urgentfinancial needs, Barnhart initiated a $1.2 millionannual contribution to the University’s scholar-ship program, a contribution that is beingincreased to $1.7 million this year.
