There will be a distinctly different look to the SaintJoseph’smen’s lacrosse teamwhen it takes the field in2012withanentirelynewcoachingstaff.LedbyheadcoachTaylorWray, a formerDefensive Player of the Year in theNationalLacrosseLeague,theHawkswilllooktoreboundafteratoughfirst season in theColonialAthleticAssociation. JoiningWrayare assistants and former college teammates from DukeUniversity,DanKeating andMichaelKeating.

Wrayisrevveduptostarttheseason,saying,“Ourteamisexcitedandeagertoget2012underway.Theyhaveputatonofworkinthisoff‐seasonandtheycan'twaitfortherealcom‐petition tobegin.”Thisyounganddeterminedgroup iscom‐petinginaconferencethatsawthreeteamsrankedinthefinalUSILApollin2011.

Leading theattack for theHawks this seasonwill besophomore RyanMcGee andjuniorKyleWilliams.McGeehasemergedasaleaderandahardworkerafterastrongoff‐sea‐son,competingeverydayandtryingtomakethissquadbetter.Therangyleft‐handedattackmanWilliams,returnsforhisjun‐iorseasonafterleadingtheHawksinscoringwith26pointson17goalsandnineassists.

The third spot in the attacking zone is still up for grabsbetweenseniorAugustusQuinzani,juniorKyleMahoney andfreshmanMattSarcona.Quinzaniismakingthemovefromthemidfieldtoattackashenettedthreegoalsandaddedanassistin 2011. Mahoney shined during the fall scrimmages as hecame off a strong year scoring eight goals. Sarcona, aNorthport, N.Y. native, has impressed the coaches with hisworkethicandskillset,ashebrings105goalsand45assistsfromhishighschoolcareeratNorthporttoHawkHill.

In themidfield, seniorBobbyHurley has showcasedhisspeedthroughouthiscareerandworkedhimselfintoareli‐ablemidfielder.Agiftedtwo‐waymiddie,sophomoreJohnnySimanski isreadytotakeonabiggerrolein2012withhisopenfieldspeed.FreshmenRobertWatts andJoshCavanaughhavestoodoutwiththeirathleticplayandlooktoearnkeyminutesonthefield.

AccordingtoWray,theface‐offspotisstillupintheairasseniorChrisJenkins returnsasthetoprunneralthoughhehasbeen battling an injury this off‐season. Sophomores WillAbbott andBillAnnesley havebeentakingtheirshareofdrawswiththeinjurytoJenkins.TedHospodar,thejuniorlongpole,hasbeeninthemixtakingrepsduringpracticeaswell.

LSMJustinRogers isacompetitorwhoisvocalandgoodofftheground.HospodarandfreshmanRichO’Neill willalsocompeteandpushfortimeatLSM.

“The team’s leadership lies in senior SSDM’sPat SinnottandDanielLieb,bothgritty,athleticplayers”saidWray.“Theyhavespentalotoftimeworkingtoperfecttheirgamesonthefieldandinthegym.”

Onthedefensiveend,seniorMattGermain andfresh‐manWill Farrell are tall, rangy defensemenwho canhandlethe ball and push in transition. Senior Colin Roemer can becounted on for his fundamentally sound position play as helookstobeakeyfactorinthesuccessthisseason.Thetough,physical play of juniorBill Bonner and stay at‐home style ofdefensewillhavehimearning timeon the field,while fresh‐manKevinBarrow willearnsometimevaluabletimeaswell.

In net,Griffin Ferrigan has shown a command over thedefenseenteringhisseniorseason.Ferriganneeds24savestomove into sixth place on the all‐time saves list with 233.

FreshmanDustinKeen wasanAll‐AmericanatDowningtownWesthighschoolandsophomorePatKurowski impressedattheHEADstrongfallballevent,showinghecanbecountedonbetweenthepipes.

“Thecoachingstaffhasdoneatremendousjobofprepar‐ing the team and laying the foundation for future success,”saysWray.“Thisteamhasworkedhardintheoff‐season,mak‐ingsureallthelittlethingsaredoneright.”

The2012slateisachallengingone,featuringsevenhomegames and five against USILA top 20 teams and one morereceivingvotes.AstheHawksgearupfortheirsecondseasonintheColonialAthleticAssociation,theyrealizetheywillfacesomeofthetoughestcompetitioninDivision1.

“Wefeelthatour2012scheduleisgoingtobeextremelycompetitive; seven home games, eight on the road,” saidWray.“Westartandfinishtheseasonathome,whichisgreat.Our conference schedule is as toughaseverwith five teamsrankedinthetop20.Wehavegreatout‐of‐conferencerivalriesalready established andwe are excited to have added threemoregames to the schedule toplaya full 15 regular seasonslateofgames,”Wraycontinued.”Wehavetwoverydifficultstretchesof threeweekendsontheroad,whichwill testourability to dealwith adversity and certainly help us build ouridentity along the way. In Division 1 lacrosse every game isgoingtobeabattle,ourteamhasworkedveryhardtopreparefor the upcoming season and we look forward to the chal‐lengesahead."

Forthesecondconsecutiveseason,SaintJoseph’swillplayLehigh to kick off the season, as the Mountain Hawks visitFinneseyFieldonSaturday,February11.

ThemenwillthenhittheroadfortheirnextthreecontestsastheyvisitBryantonFebruary18,whichisreceivingvotesintheUSILAtop20poll.TheBulldogsweretoomuchtoomuchtohandlefortheHawkslastseasonwhentheyhandedSJUitssecondlossoftheyear.

TheywillthenvisitVMIonFebruary25,ateamthattheyhaveanall‐timerecordof7‐4againstandwontheir lasttwomeetings. Saint Joseph’s will open up the month of MarchagainstWagneronthe3rdastheyhaveanall‐timerecordof11‐0versustheSeahawks.

Drexel(20)willcometoFinneseyonMarch6,toopenupconference play and a four game home stand for SJU. Justthreedaysapartfromeachother,BrownwillvisitonMarch10,andQuinnipiacwillcometoHawkHillforaMarch13meeting,the first since 2007. Conference and instate opponent PennState(17),willcomecloseoutthehomestandonMarch24.Infourall‐timemeetings,theHawkshaveyettobeattheNittanyLions.

ThetoughestpartoftheschedulefollowswhentheHawksgo on the road to face three ranked opponents inMassachusetts (11), Hofstra (14) and Delaware (19). TheHawkswill try to gain some redemption from last season astheydroppedeachgametothesequalityprograms.Theywillthen return home to end the stretch of ranked competitionagainstcityrivalPenn(15)onApril17.

AfterPenn,SJUwilltakeitslongesttripoftheseasonwhenittravelstoMacon,Ga.,toface‐offagainstMercerbeforetrav‐elingbackuptoPoughkeepsie,N.Y.justthreedayslatertotakeonMarist.

TaylorWray wasnamedtheheadmen'slacrossecoachatSaintJoseph'sUniversityonAugust1,2011.Hebecamethefourthcoachintheprogram'shistory.HecomestoSaintJoseph'safterserv‐ingasanassistantcoachatLehighUniversityforthepastfouryears.

Wraypossesses awealthof high‐level playing and coachingexperience, havingplayed colle‐giatelyatDukeUniversityandprofessionallyintheNationalLacrosseLeague.

WrayjoinedtheLehighstaffinSeptember2007andservedasthedefensivecoachandrecruit‐ingcoordinator.TheMountainHawksmadegreatstridesduringhistenureandin2011,registeredasthenation'seighthbiggestimprovementaccordingtoLaxPower'scomputerratings.Lehighqual‐ifiedforthePatriotLeagueTournamentforthefirsttimesince2006,whilethedefenselowereditsgoalsagainstaveragebyalmostonegoal.

From2003to2006WraywasanassistantcoachatQueensUniversityofCharlotte(N.C.)andthenservedasthelacrossecoach,academiccoordinatorandstrengthandconditioningspecialistattheNationalSportAcademyforoneyearin2007.

Heenjoyeda successfulplayingcareeratDuke,helping theBlueDevils to threeconsecutiveNCAATournamentappearancesandwinningACCTournamenttitlesin2001and2002.Servingastheteamcaptainin2003,heearnedtheEricTylerHardyDefensivePlayeroftheYearawardandwasafour‐timeselectiontotheACCAcademicHonorRoll.

Upon graduating from Duke in 2003 with abachelor'sofsciencedegree,hewasdraftedsec‐ond overall by the Calgary Roughnecks of theNationalLacrosseLeague.Hemadeanimmediateimpact,beingnamedthe2004RookieoftheYear,theDefensivePlayeroftheYearandaFirstTeamAll‐Star while helping Calgary to the NLLChampionship. A three‐timeNLLAll‐Star, he cur‐rentlyplaysforthePhiladelphiaWings,andservedasteamcaptainin2011.

AnativeofEdmonton,Alberta,Wrayhasalsoexcelled internationally. He is currently an assis‐tantcoachfortheCanadianNationalTeam,andisthedefensivecoordinatorforthe2012U‐19Teamandthe2014Men'sNationalTeam.Heservedinthesameroleforthe2010NationalTeam,whichfinishedsecondatthe2010WorldChampionships.As a player, he was a member of the NationalTeam which captured the International LacrosseFederationWorldChampionshipforfieldlacrossein 2006 and for indoor lacrosse in 2007.HewasnamedtotheAll‐WorldTeamin2007.

Wray receivedamaster's degree in teachingfromQueensUniversity in2006.Hiswife,Lauren(neeGallagher),wasanAll‐Americanlacrosseplay‐er at Duke and is currently the head women’slacrosse coach at Haverford College. They havetwosons,JacksonandRyan.

TheHawk,whichcelebrateditsgoldenanniversaryin2005‐06,isbestknownforstayinginconstantmotionbyflappingitswingsthroughouteverybasketballgameandrepresentingtheSaintJoseph'smotto,"TheHawkWillNeverDie."

SaintJoseph’sathleticteamshavebeenrecognizedwiththenickname“Hawks”since1929.Atthattime,theschool’syearbookeditorinitiatedacontestamongthestudentbodyforasym‐bol.Morethan100submissionswerenarrowed,with“Hawks”winningoutover“Grenadiers”byaslimmargin.Thenamewasappropriatebecauseittypified“thefightingspiritofourcrimsonand gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attackwhichhasmadeour football teamfamous.”Football,ironically,wasdiscontinuedatSJUfollowingthe1939season.

TheHawkmascothasgarnerednumerousaccoladesinits56‐yearhistory.Ithasbeenselect‐edasthenation’stopmascotbyTheSportingNews,SportsIllustrated,SportsIllustratedforKids,Street&Smith’sBasketballYearbook,ESPNCollegeBasketballmagazineandwasnominatedfortheMascotHallofFamein2008.

Mike Keating joins the 2012 coaching stafffrom the University of Pennsylvania where hewasanassistantcoach.

Prior to joining the Quaker's staff, Keatingserved as the associate head coach anddefen‐sivecoordinatoratMalvernPrep.From2006‐08,

Keatingwastheassociateheadcoachanddefensivecoordinatorat St. Joseph’sPrep inPhiladelphia. In2008,Keatingearned theEastern Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association's AssistantHighSchoolCoachoftheYearhonor.KeatingwasrecognizedastheDukeUniversityDefensiveMVPin

during his junior year. In 2001, he graduated with a bachelor'sdegreeinhistory.Aftergraduation,Keatingwasselectedasoneof150playersinvitedtotryoutforTeamUSAaswellasparticipateintheMLLChallenge.MikeandhiswifecurrentlyresideinPhiladelphia.

DanKeatingentershisfirstseasonasanassis‐tantwiththe2012SaintJoseph’smen’slacrossestaffandwillserveasboththeoffensivecoordi‐natorandrecruitingcoordinator.He isalsocur‐rentlytheownerofKeatingLacrosseClinics,LLC,which focuses on teaching the fundamentals of

thegametoaspiringyouthlacrosseplayers.Before coming to Hawk Hill, Keating spent one season as an

assistant at Lehigh after two seasons as the head coach at St.Joseph’sPrepinPhiladelphiaandoneseasonastheheadcoachatMalvernPrep.The1999graduateofDukeUniversitywasamemberof three

NCAATournamentteams,includingthe1997squadthatreachtheNCAAFinal Four.AnACCAcademicHonorRollmember,Keatingearnedhisbachelor’sofartsdegreeandwentontoearnamas‐ter’sdegreeinsecondaryeducationfromSaintJoseph’s.HecurrentlyresidesinPhiladelphiawithhiswifeKristen.

scored131 goalswhile adding101 assists in 60games for StonyBrookUniversityand finishedhis careeramongthebesttoplayattheinstitution.Additionally,CrowleyisoneofthreeplayersinAmericaEasthistorytobeafour‐timeAll‐Leaguefirst team selection and in 2010, he earned the USILA EnnersAward,giventothenation'sMostOutstandingDivisionIPlayer.The New Westminster, B.C. native was chosen number‐one

overall in the 2011 National Lacrosse League draft by thePhiladelphiaWingswherehewillhelpbolstertheoffensiveattack.

Finnesey Field, currently inits83rdyear,hasbeenhometo10 different varsity squads atSaint Joseph’s. Opened in 1929as home to the SJU footballsquad, the field has undergonenumerous changes over theyearsandhasbeenhometoovera thousand SJU varsity games,matchesandtrackmeets.

The most recent upgradeoccurred in 2008 when theAstroTurf,laiddownin2001,wasreplacedwithnew, state‐of‐the‐artTigerTurf.

Home to the men’s andwomen’s lacrosse teams, men’sand women’s soccer teams, thefield has seen other modifica‐tionssince its inception in1929.The prospect of a 70,000‐seatbowledstadiumfor footballwasdashedwhen the sportwas dis‐continuedfollowingthe1939season.

Baseball re‐occupied the space in 1947, calling Finneseyhomeuntil1959.SaintJoseph’smen’ssoccerbeganin1958andplayedeveryseasonbutone(1960)atFinnesey.In1960,theorig‐inal grandstand, as well as the hillside seating near OverbrookAvenue,wereeliminatedasVilliger(nowPost)HallandtheBluettTheatrewerebuilt.Intheprocessofthe1960construction,thefield’selevationwasraisedfivefeettoitscurrentlocation.

In1990,artificialturfreplacedthegrass,makingFinneseyatruemulti‐purposefacility.In1994theinstallationoflightsfur‐theredtheuseof thegrounds,whilenewbleachers in2003onthehillnexttoMandevilleHallwereanothertouchofrenovationtoahistoricstadium.

Themen’slacrosseteamhascompiledanoverall53‐74markin19seasons,thebestofwhichwasa6‐2campaignin2000.SJUopeneditsplayinggroundswitha9‐2losstoWesleyCollegeonMarch3,1993.

Thewomen’slacrossesquadis59‐86in19seasonsonHawkHill.Thebestseasoncamein2004whentheHawkswent5‐2enroutetoan8‐6campaign.ThefirstgamewasplayedonMarch23,1993whenSJUdefeatedGwyneddMercy,18‐4.

Thelocationhasalsobeenhometomen’ssoccersince1958and women’s soccer since 1996 while the field hockey teamwrappedupitslastseasononFinneseyin2007.

Overall, the site has seen1,161 gamesentering 2012, andSJUteamshaveputtogetheratotalrecordof526‐586‐49in82years.

The Saint Joseph’s men’s lacrosse team played its firstseasoninthehighly‐competitiveColonialAthleticAssociationin2011.TheHawks'toughslateconsistedofsixteamsrankedin the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Associationcoaches' preseason poll, including fourth‐ranked MarylandandBrown(20) innon‐conferenceplayandfourconferenceopponents ‐Hofstra (9),Massachusetts (16),Delaware (17),andDrexel(18).AtoughrebuildingyearfortheHawks,theyfinishedwith an overall record of 0‐12 andwere 0‐6 in theconference.

ThesquadopenedtheseasonagainstLehighanddespiteleading scorer Kyle Williams scoring four goals in the roadgame,fell16‐7.TheHawksscoredtwogoalstogetwithinone,6‐5,athalftime,buttheMountainHawksnettedseventhird‐quarter goals and outscored the Hawks, 3‐2, in the fourthquarterforthewin.

TheHawksfelltoBryant,14‐3,intheirhomeopenerthefollowingSaturdayandaftertwoweeksoff,droppedan11‐1matchtoRutgers,despitegoalkeeperChrisMoffa’seffortsinnetwith12saves.

Theteamthenwentonafour‐gameroadswing,openingconferenceplaywitha10‐5losstoDrexel.TheHawkswereup5‐4athalftimebutafterascorelessthirdquartertheDragonsscoredsixstraighttotakethewin.Moffatallied11saves ingoalwhile freshman Johnny Simanski scoredhis first careergoalinthematch.

JanetGreder andKenKrimmelmonitoracademicprogressofthestudent‐athletesincompliancewithSJUandNCAArulesandregula‐tions.Theofficeisaliaisonbetweentheathleticdepartmentandthefaculty, while serving as a secondary academic advisor to the stu‐dent‐athletes,helpingwithregistration,amongotherissues.

The office also assists student‐athletes in career developmentand runs timemanagementandstudyskillsworkshops throughouttheacademicyear.

All freshmanstudent‐athletes,alongwithselectupperclassmen,arerequiredtoattendstudyhallfournightsaweek.Theoffice,locat‐edintheScienceCenter113,haseightindividualstudyrooms,eachequippedwithacomputer.

Coordinated through theOfficeofEducationalSupportServicesforStudent‐Athletes, Saint Joseph’s student‐athletesutilizenumer‐oussupportprogramsavailablethroughtheUniversity. Thosepro‐grams include the Learning Resource Center, Career Services, theCounselingCenterandtheWritingCenter.Theservicesavailabletostudent‐athletes; career choice assistance, academic skills work‐shops,individualtutoringandpersonaldevelopment,allowforsuc‐cessinthepresentwhilepreparingforthefuture.

Theofficeisawareofthechallengestoday'sstudent‐athletesfaceboth on and off the playing field. To prepare them, the Office ofEducational Support Services for Student‐Athletes organizes andfacilitatesaLifeSkillsProgram.This isdesignedtoprovidestudent‐athleteswitheducationalexperiencesthatwillassisttheminbridg‐ingthegapfromhighschooltocollegeandfromcollegetoprofes‐sional life. The program is designed to reach each student‐athletebasedonhisorherindividualneeds.TheLifeSkillsProgramfocuseson the individual as awhole–academically, athletically, andemo‐tionally–andonthechangingneedsandskillsofthat individual intheyearsduringandaftercollege.Amongthewiderangeoftopicscoveredaretimemanagement,stressmanagement,resumewritingand interviewing, alcohol and drug awareness, and financial plan‐ning.

TheofficealsooverseestheStudent‐AthleteAdvisoryCommittee(SAAC),whichactsasliaisonbetweentheUniversitycommunityandthe student‐athlete body. Members are selected by respectivecoachesorteammembersatthebeginningofeachacademicyear.SAACworks toencourageandpromotestudent‐athletes tobestu‐dent leaders that represent individual varsity teamsand theentireathletic department as a vocal, integral part of the greater SaintJoseph'scommunity.

KenKrimmel is inhisfourthyearasassistantdirector after serving an internship in the depart‐mentin2008.A2003graduateofPennStatewithadegree in elementary education, he received hismaster’sofeducationdegreefromTemplein2008.
