Defiance College, founded in 1850, is a private liberal arts col-lege affiliated with the United Church of Christ, providing out-standing academic programs and co-curricular activities for a student body of nearly 1,100 students. Building on a strong foundation of more than a century of educating citizens for lives of leadership and service, Defi-ance College provides opportunities for its students to make a meaningful impact on society in the twenty-first century with an educational experience of engagement.
The Princeton Review features Defiance College in Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Com-munity Involvement. Defiance College has been named for five-consecutive years to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to commu-nity service, and for the past two years DC has been named a Military Friendly School for providing significant benefits and services to veterans. Defiance College is also one of 119 U.S. colleges and universities selected by The Carnegie Founda-tion for the Advancement of Teaching to receive its Commu-nity Engagement Classification.
The McMaster School for Advancing Humanity was created to provide opportunities for DC undergraduate students and faculty to more closely examine global issues and how they affect the human condition. Faculty and students conducted projects during the 2010-2011 year in Belize, Cambodia and New Orleans. The School serves as the umbrella for the Ser-vice Leadership Program developing leadership communica-tion, conflict resolution and cultural awareness; the Carolyn M. Small Honors Program providing opportunities for stu-dents to participate in an honors curriculum; and Project 701, a student-run nonprofit organization.
Defiance College offers students a world of opportunities to enhance their academic experience, from cultural visits in world-class cities across the continent, to international trips through the DC Global program, all of which open minds to new ideas and cultures and provide insights to help in compe-tition for jobs and graduate school placement.
Defiance College is also home of the Hench Autism Studies Program, an innovative, multi-faceted program designed to specifically address the late adolescent years and the transi-tion of individuals with autism to adulthood.
Student life is an important part of a Defiance College edu-cation. Activities include student government, musical and theater groups, religious organizations, intercultural organi-zations, honor societies, special interest groups, intramural athletics, and four Greek chapters including a service frater-nity.
As a national leader in the field of service learning and en-gagement, DC teaches students to take the knowledge they have gained and use it to change lives for the better – in their communities, in distant villages, and in their careers. The entire Defiance College family joins me in welcoming you to our campus and to today’s game.
We hope that while you are with us today, you will have the opportunity to explore as many parts of Defiance College as possible and that you will share in the excitement about DC continuing to grow around the nation. This year’s entering freshman class is the largest in recent memory. During the past year, we have seen significant increases in applications, with particular increas-es in applications from outside Ohio, as we become more and more a college with national reach and scope. In fact, this past year, more than half of the students applying to DC came from outside Ohio, represent-ing 48 states and territories.
Why are students traveling from all around the United States (and other countries as well) to attend DC? I think it is because Defiance College offers students the best of all worlds. At DC, students get the individual-ized benefits of a student-centered, small college, but they also get a world of opportunities beyond. Let me explain.
As a small college, DC works to help students grow as people, provid-ing individualized attention in the classroom, the guidance of Personal Success Plans, mentoring, and assistance geared to the challenges and potential of each student. DC provides this in a rural, caring, and sup-portive setting, thereby enabling students to challenge themselves in new ways and grow as individuals, leaders, and citizens committed to service.
At the same time, however, through a broad array of curricular and extra-curricular activities, DC opens to students an entire world of opportuni-ties, helping students to develop a distinctive Defiance College Resume that will enable them to stand out in the job market and when applying to graduate schools. From a broad-based liberal arts education; innovative programs that link what goes on in the classroom with the realities of the outside world and give students distinctive hands-on experience in their relevant fields; international and domestic travel opportunities; exposure to diverse cultural experiences; the use of technologies to bring the world into the classroom in Defiance; and unique service and research oppor-tunities, DC aims to give students the tools they need to become life-long learners and to make distinctive contributions to a changing world.
While you are enjoying today’s events on campus, I hope you will have an opportunity to get to know some of our students individually. They are a wonderful group, with incredible potential. I very much enjoy being part of the Defiance College family with them, as they bring excitement, energy, fresh perspectives, and commitment to service – to name just a few of their many attributes.
I want to thank our entire team, including players, coaches, trainers and staff, for the great work they do every day and the numerous ways in which they go “above and beyond” on a regular basis. I also want to thank our alumni, the parents of our athletes, and the various organiza-tions, all of whom donate generously to our athletic programs. Members of the Defiance College Board of Trustees, the Purple and Gold Club, and the Alumni Varsity “D” all contribute immeasurably as well, both as individuals and through their organizations. And the incomparable fac-ulty at DC, together with extremely dedicated administrators and staff, all combine to make DC the special place that it is.

The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience an extra-curricular educational and physical activity that fits within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person.
The student-athlete will be exposed to a variety of opportunities for personal growth in the areas of intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social and physical dimensions as it relates to each individual and their respective sport. The student-athlete, as a team member, will be involved in a learning community that will strive for excellence both on the field and in the classroom while maintaining a dignity of fair play and continued emphasis on positive sportsmanship. Jointly, the coaches and student-athletes will build an engaged environment that will accentu-ate the learning process not only within the competitive arena but also within the college cam-pus and the community as a whole. An emphasis will be placed on the impact of participation and personal growth, rather than scoreboard success, in a balanced sports program where equitable sports opportunities will be available to both genders.
The student-athletes of Defiance College choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletics program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related financial aid or the promise of financial security through professional athletic stardom. Through participation in the intercollegiate athletics program, a student-athlete continues to compete for the love of sport, the thrill of competition and the fulfillment of countless intrinsic values.

The Defiance College men’s lacrosse team hosts all of its games at the newly-turfed Justin F. Coressel Stadium. The 4,000-capacity facility was construct-ed in 1994 and boasts a full working press box with internet capabilities for webcasting events. The field received a major facelift this past fall, as Defiance completely removed the old surface and installed brand new field turf. Another newly constructed facility that will aid in the success of all DC athletic programs is the George M. Smart Athletic Center. The failility houses a weight room specifically con-structed for athletes to be able to accomodate each sport’s needs. The SMART Fitness Center has also moved to the George M. Smart Athletic Center. This features a wide variety of workout equipment from cardiovascular machines to free weights. All DC students and faculty have access to the SMART Fitness Center. The new facility also has an indoor track and three basketball courts that will be spe-cifically used for recreational activity.

Ryan Kuhn joins the Defiance program from the College of Mount Saint Vincent, where he served as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Dolphins for the past four seasons. During that time, Kuhn also worked on staff as an
assistant varsity coach at Copiague High.
Prior to his time at MSV, Kuhn acted in the same position at Hendrix College, helping launch the men’s lacrosse program for the Warriors and playing a key role in the recruiting process.
Kuhn started his coaching career at Suffolk Community College in 2007 and gained key coach-ing experiences at a host of college, high school and club camps.
As a collegiate lacrosse player, Kuhn earned a pair of Skyline Academic All-Conference honors from Manhattanville, before graduating in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in history.

Routt brings plenty of coaching experience with him to De-fiance, after serving as the head coach for the Cincy Royals summer club program from 2007-2011. Routt was also the head coach at a pair of high schools in the Cincinnati area,
leading Turpin High in 2009 and Seven Hills High during the 2011 campaign.
Prior to beginning his coaching career, Routt played collegiately at NCAA Division II Saint Leo for one season before transferring to the University of Cincinnati. During his time with the Bearcats, Routt started at the goalie position on the club team for three seasons.

The Yellow Jacket men’s lacrosse program is set to embark on its opening season as a varsity sport at Defiance College. Head Coach Ryan Kuhn is excited to get the season underway.
“As a staff we have been looking forward to this for a very long time and we are excited to get out on the field and show everyone what Defiance Lacrosse is all about,” said Kuhn. “We have a fantastic group of young men, and we are very lucky to coach such a wonderful group.”
Being a first year program, there are many challenges that the Yellow Jackets face in the up-coming season. Kuhn has instilled expectations and a vision for the young Defiance squad that will help the team get better day in and day out.
“As a staff we have many short term and long term goals,” stated Kuhn. “As a program we view every single day as a challenge and have adopted a ‘Win the Day’ attitude. Every day we want to get better and win the day, and if you can win the small battles during the week it’ll definitely put you in a good position to win the battle on gameday. We want to have a successful season this year and success can be defined in many different ways.”
One of the major difficulties for every first-year program is recruiting and bringing in quality players. The head coach thinks he and his staff have assembled a solid core of players who will play a factor in the building of the program.
“I think we have a good base to build on in the future,” Kuhn said. “We have some guys at key positions that will definitely help us progress as the season goes along.”
On the defensive side of the field it is of the upmost of importance to have a solid shot-stopper in a goalie and Kuhn believes he has found one in Chris Smith.
“Chris has developed into an even better stopper since he’s gotten here,” stated Kuhn. “He’s gotten into tremendous shape and it has helped in all facets of his game. He has big game ex-perience coming from one of the toughest high school divisions in the country, and we know it will translate into the college game for our squad.”
While the goalie position is a huge factor, the game is controlled by the midfielders and reliable goal-scorers in the attack are crucial to a team’s success. Kuhn highlighted two of many players that will have an opportunity to step up and make a difference in the upcoming season.
“Midfielder Chase Mallory is also someone who has come a long way since he has arrived at DC,” said Kuhn. “He a strong, athletic midfielder, who has all the tools to be a great player at this level. We are going to lean on him to lead us from the midfield. Attacker Jesse Bailey is some-one that really has adapted well to the college game and really excelled in the preseason. He is a tough, shifty player that can be a real offensive threat this year. We look at him as someone that will be a big leader on the offensive side of the ball for the next four years.”
The sport of lacrosse is one of the newer sports that is sweeping across the country. Coach Kuhn describes the sport to people who are unfamiliar with lacrosse.
Lacrosse is a great game to watch because it combines a lot of the best qualities from all sports,” stated Kuhn. “It combines the physicality of football and hockey with the speed and fitness of soccer, and also the up-and-down tempo of basketball. It is a great sport with a lot of history and all of these factors are definitely a driving force behind why this game is the fastest growing sport in the country.”
