THE DEEP SOUTH CONFERENCE The Moccasins compete in the Deep South Confer-ence which is a lacrosse-only conference consisting of six schools with Florida Southern, Rollins and Saint Leo belonging to the South Division and Catawba, Mars Hill and Wingate (all located in North Carolina) making up the Northern Division. The first and second rounds of the Deep South Conference Tournament are held April 13 and 15 with the #2 seed in each divi-sion hosting the #3 seed with the winner advancing to face the #1. The two division winners would then compete in the DSC Championship game on April 18 at Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina.

“Child of the Sun”

Annie Pfeiffer Chapel. What Frank Lloyd Wright created on the campus is amazing. His original work is still as modern and exciting as the newest buildings still on many architect’s drawing boards. It is, perhaps, symbolic that the greatest concentration of his genius should be located at a small, private institution of higher learning. Perhaps he describes it best, “...out of the ground and into the light, a child of the sun...the college of tomorrow.”

Founded by the United Methodist Church, Florida South-ern College is one of the oldest private colleges in the state, trac-ing its beginnings to a small seminary in Orlando in 1883. The tie to its founding church has remained constant and is today, a proud part of the College’s heritage and a bright beacon for the future. Florida Southern moved to Lakeland in the heart of Florida’s citrus belt in 1922 and began the construction of a campus that would eventually become a national landmark. The beautiful 100-acre campus, on the north shore of Lake Hollingsworth, includes the world’s largest collection of buildings by master architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Florida Southern’s West Campus, now known throughout the world, actually had its inception in the mind of Dr. Ludd M. Spivey, president of the college from 1925-1957. In 1935 he conceived the idea of an ultra-modern campus, designed by the world’s leading architect. Ground was broken two years later for the first building in the Wright collection, the

Dr. Anne B. KerrCollege President Since her unanimous appointment as its 17th president in 2004, Dr. Kerr has provided Florida Southern College with extraordinary vision and leadership that is enhancing the student experience and increasing the College’s national prominence. Under her guidance, the institution has renewed its commitment to educating the whole person -- academically, socially, spiritually, and physically -- so that students leave prepared to

make a positive and consequential impact on our world. Early in her tenure, Dr. Kerr led a comprehensive Strategic Plan designed to enrich all facets of the College’s student-centered culture. She is dedicated to enhancing a student life culture that provides opportunities for active learning and leadership; promoting a scholarly environment where professors have outstanding records of achievement that support innovative, engaged, and personalized instruction; and to strengthening further the College’s outstanding scholar-athlete program that models the highest standards of NCAA Division II athletics.

As part of her quest for excellence, Dr. Kerr commissioned a master plan that outlines the College’s vision for the campus and includes numerous facility transformations. These include the newly completed Barnett Residential Life Center and the soon-to-be completed state-of-the-art Christoverson Humanities Building, both designed by world-renowned architect Robert A. M. Stern; TuTu’s Cyber Café in the Roux Library and the adjacent McKay Archives Center; the expansion of wireless Internet access, campus-wide technology upgrades, and the Rinker Technology Center, currently under construction; renovations to the student dining facility and residence halls; as well as a restoration of our world renowned Frank Lloyd Wright designed campus. Prior to assuming the presidency at Florida Southern, Dr. Kerr was Vice President for Advancement at both Rollins College and the University of Richmond. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Mercer University and her master’s and doctoral degrees from the Florida State University. She has held a number of community volunteer leadership roles and currently serves on the boards of SunTrust Bank Central Florida and All Saints’ Academy. An avid supporter of the arts, she is the current president of the Board of Trustees of the Polk Museum of Art. She is in the first year of her term as president of the Sunshine State Conference. She and her husband Dr. Roy Kerr have a fifteen-year-old son Ed. Roy Kerr has authored two books about baseball entitled “The Loving of the Game” (2007) and “Sliding Billy Hamilton: The Life and Times of Baseball’s First Great Leadoff Hitter” (2009).

Pete MeyerDirector of Athletics In 2008-09, Pete Meyer served his first year as the Director of Athletics at Florida Southern College. Named to the position Feb. 21, 2008, he officially assumed his duties July 1, 2008, when Lois Webb retired. Since 1972, he is just the fourth person to occupy the position of athletics director at Florida Southern - following Hal Smeltzly (1972-2000), Mike Roberts (2000-01) and Webb (2001-08). Meyer was the Moccasins’ head basebal l coach f rom 20 02

through 2008. In the fall of 2008, Meyer was given the additional title of Dean of Wellness, as the operation of the Hollis Wellness Center as well as the the water ski program and campus intramurals also fall under his direction. Meyer, who has been at Florida Southern since 1998, had served as assistant athletics director for Webb since February of 2006, in addition to maintaining his baseball coaching duties. In his position as assistant athletics director, he was responsible for acquiring major gifts for the athletic department that included funding and equipment for the athletics weight room and upgrading the baseball and men’s basketball locker rooms. He coordinated all of the athletic department’s fundraising efforts, coordinated athletic facilities and served as game administrator for various home events. He also served as Florida Southern’s representative on the Sunshine State Conference

Marketing Committee. As baseball coach, Meyer spent six full seasons as head coach, keeping the Moccasin program among the elite in NCAA Division II. In 2005, he guided the Moccasins to their ninth NCAA Division II national title with a 51-11 record and was the American Baseball Coaches Association Division II Coach-of-the-Year. In addition to his national coaching honors from the ABCA, Meyer also was South Region, Sunshine State Conference and Florida Diamond Club (scouting organization) Coach-of-the-Year. His head coaching record at Florida Southern was 257-111-1, while his overall record as a head coach was 296-141-1. Thirty-four Moccasin baseball players were drafted or signed professional contracts during Meyer’s tenure at FSC. Before officially assuming the reigns of head coach, Meyer had served for over three years as Florida Southern’s top assistant coach under Chuck Anderson. He also was the program’s recruiting coordinator. Prior to joining the FSC coaching staff, Meyer spent five seasons at Valdosta State, working under the legendary head coach, Tommy Thomas. Before his stint at Valdosta State, Meyer was head baseball coach at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, where he coordinated the start of the school’s Division III baseball program in 1991. He served as a graduate assistant at Valdosta State from 1988-90, while earning his M. Ed. in physical education. A four-year baseball letterman at the College of Wooster in Ohio, Meyer graduated in 1987 with a B.A. in speech communication. Meyer is married to the former Julie Newnum. The couple has three children, 21-year old Ross, 19-year old Mitchell and 18-year old Megan.

Starting his second season at Florida Southern in 2009-10, Rory Whipple looks to continue to build the men’s lacrosse program into a successful one, as he did at three other colleges. In theMoccasins’ first seasonof NCAA competition in 2008-09, Whipple guided his non-scholarship program to a 4-6 record and was just one win away from making the Deep South Conference Tournament. Whipple officially began his duties at Florida Southern on June 1, 2008, after coaching the previous year at Vero Beach High School. He

has an overall collegiate coaching record of 224-165 in 27 seasons as a head coach. Whipple was men’s lacrosse coach at Bryant University (R.I.) for seven seasons, starting the program in 2000 and producing a 75-39 record during that time. Fifteen Bryant players earned All-America honors during his tenure. After posting a 7-7 record in its inaugural season, Bryant went on to enjoy six straight winning seasons under Whipple’s direction. His teams were nationally ranked in Division II each of his seven seasons there. Before going to Bryant, Whipple was the men’s lacrosse coach at Hartwick College (N.Y.) for 12 years. He took over that program in 1987 and became the most successful coach in the program’s history, producing 10 straight winning seasons and an overall record of 114-65.HetookHartwicktoitsfirstNCAAtournamentberthin1995. Prior to taking over the Hartwick program, Whipple coached the Clarkson University (N.Y.) men’s lacrosse team for seven seasons, setting the school record for wins with a 10-5 record in 1986. At the same time, he also was the head wrestling coach at Clarkson. Whipple also has had extensive international lacrosse experience. In 1993 he traveled to Japan with a group from the U.S. to work devel-opment programs in that country. In 1994 he was named head coach oftheIroquoisNationalTeamandledthesquadtoafifth-placefinishat the World Lacrosse Championships in England. He also coached the team at the Commonwealth Games in Vancouver that year. He returned to Japan in 1996 as a coach of the Iroquois National Team for the Under-19 World Championships. In 1999 he coached the Under-19 Iroquois Junior National Team to a bronze medal in the World Games in Australia. In 2002, he was an assistant coach for the Iroquois National Team that placed fourth in the 2002 World Championship in Australia. A 1976 graduate of Cortland State (N.Y.), Whipple played on the Cortland State 1975 NCAA Division II championship lacrosse team. He also earned All-America honors in wrestling at Cortland State and twice was named the team’s most valuable wrestler. He and his wife, Judy, have one daughter, Kristie, and two sons, Max and Conor.

ASSISTANT COACHMARTY WARD

Marty Ward, a two-time All-America selection at Limestone College, is in his first season as assistant lacrosse coach at Florida Southern College. He will be the top assistant to head coach Rory Whip-ple. Ward was a goalkeeper for four sea-sons at Division II power Limestone, which compiled a 55-9 record during his career. He was an honorable mention All-America selection in 2005 and 2007. Limestone reached the NCAA semifi-nals all four years of his career. Twice the Saints lost in the semifinals to eventual champion Lemoyne (2006 and 2007)

and twice they lost in overtime in the title game (11-10 to Lemoyne in 2004 and 14-13 to New York Tech in 2005). A graduate of Corcoran High School in Syracuse, N.Y., Ward was a two-time team captain for Limestone and a three-time all-con-ference selection. In 2006 he was the MVP of the Deep South Con-ference Tournament. Also in 2006 he was the starting goalkeeper for the Iroquois Nationals program that finished fourth at the 2006 World Lacrosse Championship and he was rated second in the nation in saves. In 2007 he was named Player of the Year in the Carolinas Virginia Athletic Conference. “I’ve known Marty since he played in the 2006 World Champi-onship,” Whipple said. “I also watched him play when he was at Lime-stone. He’s a person of strong character and will bring a lot of energy and outstanding knowledge of goal tending and defensive concepts to our program. He’s going to do an excellent job as our defensive coordinator.”

Max Whipple is in his first season as assistant lacrosse coach at Florida Southern College. He will be work-ing with head coach Rory Whipple, his father, and top assistant coach Marty Ward. Whipple began his collegiate career at Bryant University, which compiled a 21-11 record during his career there. Whipple played midfielder for the Bulldogs and did face-offs and has the second highest face-off winning per-centage at Bryant University with .757. He graduated from Bryant University in

2008. With one season of eligibility remaining, Whipple was a member of the inaugural lacrosse team at Florida Southern last year, where he helped the team to a 4-6 record. He started all 10 games for the Mocs and finished the season with a face-off percentage of .601, which is the highest in school history. He also led the team with 63 ground balls. His efforts earned him an All-Deep Southern Honorable Mention Award in 2009. Whipple is currently pursuing his master’s degree in business administration at Florida Southern College.

Justin Brown had a team season-high 5 assists in the Mocs’ 18-9 win over Medaille on March 16, 2009. The 18 goals scored and the 9-goal margin of victory were also team season best totals.

Fan support was enthusiastic for the Mocs at their first-ever game on Feb. 4, 2009 despite an uncharacteristic game-time temperature of 40 degrees.

Coach Rory Whipple is the winningest coach in NCAA Division II Men’s Lacrosse with 224 victo-ries. His winning percent-age of .576 is eighth best amongst active coaches.

John Freda scored eight goals and had four assists for the Mocs in 2009.

Bryan Sbriglia notched five goals and had one assists last season for the Mocs.

The Moccasins play their home matches at the Thomas W. Bryant Stadium located three miles from the Florida Southern College Campus. The stadium is adjacent to Henley Field which serves as the home ballpark for the Moccasin baseball team. Who was Thomas Bryant? ... Thomas Bryant started Lakeland High School’s football program in 1907. He served three terms in the Florida State Legistature and spent 14 years on the Board of Control (which later became the Board of Regents) overseeing the state university system. As part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Works Prog-ress Administration in the 1930s, Bryant sought funding to build a new football stadium for the city of Lakeland. The funding was first approved in 1936 but later canceled. After several years of disappointing trips to Washington, Bryant finally secured $65,000 in federal funds, the stadium was built next to Henley Field, and on Sept. 26, it was dedicated and named in his honor. Florida Gov. Spessard Holland, a graduate of Summerlin Institute in Bartow made the dedi-cation speech at halftime. Along with Moccasin Lacrosse, Bryant Stadium still hosts the Lakeland Dreadnaughts’ home games. Its press box has since been renovated and named in honor of Eric Murray.

Go 1/2 mile to Ingraham Avenue and turn right. Go to McDonald and turn right. Parking lot is on the left, just past Barnett Field.

From Orlando Airport ... Take 417 South (toll road) to I-4 West and follow directions above.

From Tampa/St. Petersburg/Fort Myers ... Follow I-4 East to Exit 27 (570E, Polk Parkway exit). Go approximately 6.1 miles to Exit 7 (South Florida Avenue - toll: 50 cents). Turn left onto 37N (South Florida Avenue) and go to McDonald Street. Turn right on McDonald and turn go seven blocks to the campus. Park in the second parking lot on the right (Barnett Field).

From Palm Beach/Fort Lauderdale ... Take Florida Turnpike north to Yeehaw Junction (Hwy 60). Take Hwy 60 to 98 North to Lakeland. Watch for Grove Park Shopping Plaza and turn left at Crystal Lake and go to Lake Hollingsworth Drive. Turn right and go to Ingraham and turn right. Go to stop sign (McDonald) and turn left. Parking lot will be on the left, just past Barnett Field.
