2015 SAINT JOSEPH’S WOMEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GuIDE3

Sweeney Field, formerly known as Finnesey Field, has beenhome to 10 different varsity squads at Saint Joseph’s University inover 80 years of use. Opened in 1929 as home to the SJU footballsquad, the field has undergone numerous changes over the years andhas been home to over 1,200 SJU varsity games, matches and trackmeets. The pitch is the current home of the varsity men’s andwomen’s soccer and lacrosse teams.

The field was renamed Sweeney Field in Fall 2013 upon comple-tion of an extensive expansion project. The venue has significantlyincreased the seating capacity for SJU’s varsity lacrosse and soccerprograms. The new name recognizes the contributions of Sean S.Sweeney ’94 (MBA), a member of the University’s Board of Trusteesand the lead benefactor to the renovation project. Sweeney Field wasblessed in conjunction with Hawktoberfest on October 12, 2013 whilea formal dedication was held on April 5, 2014.

The current expansion included the addition of 1,200 permanentseats to the hillside nearest to the University’s iconic Barbelin Hall aswell as the addition of 1,100 portable seats on the opposite side ofthe field, increasing total seating capacity to 3,000, while adding anew state of the art press box and enhanced sound system.Additionally,Sweeney Field’s turf and track were updated in 2015.

Opened in 1929 and planned as the centerpiece to a 70,000-seatfootball stadium, SJU was forced to eliminate the field’s originalgrandstand and hillside seating in 1960 due to the construction ofVilliger (now Post) Hall/Bluett Theater. Since 1990, the field hasundergone a number of upgrades and enhancements designed toexpand usage and functionality, including installation of AstroTurfartificial surface prior to the currently TigerTurf surface, lights (1994),and bleachers (2003). Additionally, the track received a new coat ofrubber material in 2009 to better suit the athletes who use it for allseasons.

Finnesey Field was named after the late James T. Finnesey. Anative of Wyncote, Pa., parishioner at the Gesu and president of alocal auto manufacturer, he was a member of SJU’s FoundationCommittee, which was established in 1922 to raise support for theCollege’s relocation to Philadelphia’s Wynnefield neighborhood.Finnesey was a lead donor to the stadium project in 1927. Legend hasit that a 1777 Revolutionary War skirmish took place on the site.

Currently the home of SJU men’s and women’s varsity soccer andlacrosse teams, Sweeney Field has also served as the home venue forHawk baseball, field hockey, football and softball, in addition toperipheral usage by the men’s and women’s track teams, along withcountless club, intramural and recreational activities.

Lane Davis is starting his third season as an assistant coach at Saint Joseph's.Working extensively with the goalkeepers, Davis has helped the Hawks develop into one of the top

backlines in the Atlantic 10. Last season, under his guidance, goalkeeper Allison Ebling set the programrecord for wins in a season (11), while tallying eight shutouts en route to helping SJU to an A-10Championshipappearance.

In his first year at Saint Joseph’s, Davis helped the squad finish tied for fifth in the Atlantic 10 inshutouts (six) and sixth overall in saves (86) and goals-against-average (1.34). Individually, Lauren Jancuskaranked third in the conference in saves per game (4.56) and in the top 10 for save percentage, goals-against-average and shutouts.

Davis came to Hawk Hill after serving as an assistant at UMBC. In the fall of 2012, he helped goal-keeper Lauren Kadet earn America East All-Conference Second Team honors and defender Amira Walcott

In 2004, Kansas won its first Big 12 title, made its second-straight NCAAappearance and achieved a #6 ranking during the year.

Following Kansas' success in 2004, Davis took over as an assistant at Missouri State. Focusing on goalkeeper and defensive improvement,he helped the Bears' goalkeeper Jackie Jasper to a First Team All-Missouri Valley Conference selection, while defender Kate Hercules wasnamed Defensive Player of the Year in the MVC.was named Defensive Player of the Year in the MVC.

After his successful stint with Missouri State, Davis joined U.C. Riverside as recruiting coordinator and goalkeeper coach for two seasons. While with the Highlanders, he helped goalkeeper Brittany Goetz lead the Big West and set the team's single-season record for saves (135) in2008.

The Saint Joseph’s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for more than a half a century. One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant

motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph’s motto,“The Hawk Will Never Die”.

Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At thattime, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name wasappropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive ofthe aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJUfollowing the 1939 season.

The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its 57-year history. It has been selected as thenation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’sBasketball Yearbook and ESPN College Basketball magazine and was a nominee for the 2008 Mascot Hall ofFame.
