Gerry Quinlan is in his 14th season as head women’s rowing coach at Saint Joseph’s University and has developedthe Hawks into one of the East’s most competitive programs. Including his tenure at Saint Joseph’s, Quinlan hasamassed two decades of collegiate head coaching experience.

The Hawks were in a rebuilding mode in 2011‐12 after losing its most successful four‐year class to graduation, butthe crew posted solid results to build upon in the future. Saint Joseph’s medaled in three events at the Atlantic 10Championships, and at the Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta,the defending champion Second Varsity 8 earned a bronzemedal for its third consecutive medal in the prestigious event. At the 2012 Dad Vails, he was presented with theMatthew Ledwith Coach’s Award, which is given to the outstanding coach from the previous year’s regatta.

Quinlan’s 2011 crew had one of the best seasons in school history, highlighted by two firsts for the program ‐ agold medal at the Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta and the team title in the Atlantic 10 Championships. The Hawks’ SecondVarsity 8 captured the program’s first Dad Vail gold medal and the Varsity 4 took home a silver, to help SJU finish sec‐ond in the team standings. Saint Joseph’s won the Freshman 8 at the conference meet, and earned top‐three finish‐es in three other events to give the Hawks the league’s team crown for the first time ever. In 2010, the Hawks main‐

tained their status as one of the top teams in the Atlantic 10 Conference, turned in medal‐winning performances (onesilver, two bronze) at the Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta, and ended the year with a trip to the prestigious Henley RoyalRegatta for the second time in school history. SJU’s Varsity 8 also set a record in becoming the only team to advanceto the Grand Final at the Dad Vail Regatta for six consecutive years.

The 2009 Hawks earned a number of firsts for the program. Saint Joseph’s won its first‐ever Atlantic 10 titles as theVarsity 8 and Quad boats earned the gold medals at the conference championships. Quinlan was recognized as theAtlantic 10 Coach of the Year for the first time in his career, while the Hawks matched their best‐ever team result witha third‐place finish. The Hawks earned a bronze medal, which gave them the most medals of any team in the previousfour years. SJU’s Freshman 8 also advanced to the Grand Final for the seventh consecutive season.

In 2008, Quinlan’s charges placed a then best‐ever third as a team at the Atlantic 10 Championship. The Varsity 8boat earned its first‐ever medal at A‐10s, placing second, while also taking first at the Jesuit Invitational and the KellyCup. The rest of the Hawks also dominated at the city‐wide Kelly Cup races, taking first place in every contest.

Quinlan guided the Hawks to victory in the Varsity 8 at the 2006 Dad Vail Regatta while that crew earned the school’s first‐ever trip to the Henley RoyalRegatta in England. The Hawks rowed to a silver‐medal finish in the Dad Vail Varsity 8 in 2007 while the Freshman 8 took silver in 2008.

During his tenure the Hawks have won three gold medals, six silvers, and five bronze medals at the Dad Vail Regatta. SJU has finished second in thewomen’s point trophy standings twice and combined with the Hawks’ men’s team to win the Dad Vail Overall Points Trophy in 2005, 2006 and 2010.

Since his arrival at SJU in 1999, Quinlan has been one of the driving forces behind the growth of both the women’s and men’s rowing programs, nearlydoubling participation during his tenure. Quinlan has been active in the development of the Robert M. Gillin, Jr. Boathouse, which opened in 2002, while main‐taining alumni support and coordinating several local regattas, including the Jesuit Invitational Regatta.

Quinlan’s résumé includes a six‐year stint as the head coach of Northwestern University’s men’s and women’s programs and a three‐year stretch as the headwomen’s coach at the University of Notre Dame. His teams have won medals at the Dad Vail Regatta, the Champion International Collegiate Regatta and the Headof the Charles, and have competed in the Henley Royal Regatta and the Mexico City International Championships.

A 1991 graduate of Notre Dame, Quinlan spent his prep career rowing at Monsignor Bonner High School in Drexel Hill, Pa. He and his wife Linda, a Hawks’assistant coach, reside in Philadelphia with their daughter, Maeve.

Gerry Quinlan was named the 2009 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Yearafter guiding the Hawks to wins in the Varsity 8 and the Quad atthe league championship.


Linda Quinlan is in her 13th season as an assistant coach at Saint Joseph’s and works primarilywith the freshman squad.

Under her guidance, the Hawks’ Freshman 8 has experienced great success, most recently with agold‐medal winning performance in the 2011 Atlantic 10 Championships. Over the years, the Freshman 8has earned four silvers and two bronze medals at the Dad Vail Regatta, as well as gold medals at the ECACMeet and the Jesuit Invitational.

Quinlan, a 2000 graduate of Loyola College, teaches math and science at the Philadelphia HighSchool for Creative and Performing Arts, and is completing her master’s of education at Saint Joseph's. Sheand husband Gerry, the Hawks’ head coach, reside in Philadelphia with their daughter, Maeve.

Former Saint Joseph’s standout Brianna Kearns, a 2006 graduate, is in her third season as assis‐tant coach with the Hawks’ staff.

Kearns was a member of the Varsity 8 for three years, including the boat which won the goldmedal at the 2006 Dad Vail Regatta and made the Hawks’ first‐ever trip to the Henley Royal Regatta. In2003, she rowed for the Freshman 8 that earned silver medals at both the Atlantic 10 Championships andthe Dad Vail Regatta.

She returned to SJU after serving as an assistant coach at Barry University for two seasons andprior to that, worked on the staff at Philadelphia University.

Kearns, a native of Northfield, N.J. who rowed for Mainland Regional High School, earned a mas‐ter’s of science degree from Barry University in 2010.

One of the most honored women's rowers at Saint Joseph's, Debbie Bateman joins the coaching staffin 2012‐13.

Bateman was a member of the Hawks' Varsity 8 that captured the title at the 2006 Dad Vail Regattaand competed at the Royal Henley Regatta. She also helped SJU take second in the Varsity 8 at the DadVail Regatta in 2007, earn silver in the 2008 Atlantic 10 Championships and win the Kelly Cup in 2007 and2008. As a senior, she was named to the A‐10 All‐Conference Second Team.

She excelled in the classroom and was named the Atlantic 10 Women's Rowing Student‐Athlete of theYear in 2008, as well as being named to the conference's All‐Academic Team for two consecutive years.Bateman, a native of Longport, N.J., was selected to ESPN the Magazine Academic All‐District Team andwas named the Philadelphia Inquirer's Academic All‐Area Performer of the Year for women's rowing fortwo years in a row.

GILLIN BOATHOUSE

The Robert M. Gillin, Jr. Boathouse was dedicated in June 2002 as thehome of the Saint Joseph’s University men’s and women’s rowing teams.

The 15,540 square foot state‐of‐the‐art boathouse includes four heatedboat bays with capacity for 42 eights, 14 fours/quads, and 14 small boats.

The boathouse sits on 20,381 square feet of land at the 1,000‐metermark of the famed Schuylkill River race course. The boathouse serves as SJU’shome base for all of its home regattas, including the Dad Vail Regatta, MurphyCup, and various dual races. The 750‐square foot deck is a perfect viewingarea for families, fans, and alumni.

The second floor of the boathouse includes locker rooms, showers, etc aswell as a large common area for ergs, team meetings, and video review.

The Gillin Boat Club joined the Schuylkill Navy on September 20, 2004, byunanimous vote of the delegates of the Schuylkill Navy's 10 member clubs.

In addition to serving as the home of Hawk rowing, the Gillin Boathousealso hosts several summer camps including the Saint Joseph’sUniversity/Fairmount Park Commission's Community Rowing Program.

Fairmount Park Community Rowing ProgramIn addition to serving as the home of Hawk rowing, the Gillin Boathouse

also hosts the Fairmount Park Commission's Community Rowing Program. Thefirst step in a long‐term partnership between the University and theFairmount Park Commission, the program is designed to provide an experi‐ence for youth in the city of Philadelphia who have not had the opportunityto experience the sport of rowing.

2011‐12 YEAR IN REVIEW


The Saint Joseph's women's rowing team was in a rebuildingmode in 2011‐12 after losing its most successful four‐year class tograduation. It became a season with less success than the Hawks havebeen accustomed to, but still with solid results to build upon.

The Hawks achieved a season with a number of wins, but experi‐enced a few ups and downs at the high‐profile events of the season ‐the Atlantic 10 Championships and the Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta.Overall, the team competed to the best of its ability, but was over‐powered at the end of some of the key races.

The Varsity 8 got off to a good start with a victory over Delaware,Drexel and La Salle, to mark the seventh consecutive year in which thetop boat opened the season with a decisive win. In the JesuitInvitational hosted by SJU, the Varsity 8 suffered its first defeat in anumber of years, but all of the other boats took second place on theCooper River course that had a stiff headwind.

SJU advanced four boats to the Grand Finals at the Murphy Cup,in what was the largest field ever for that event. The Second Varsity 8would pull through with a silver medal, finishing behind a strong Navycrew. The freshmen shouldered a heavy load throughout the day,competing in the Eight and then breaking into the Freshman 4, wherethey recorded the fastest time in the heat. But due to a mixup by therace officials, the Hawks didn't get a chance to compete for a medalin the finals.

The Varsity 8 returned to the San Diego Crew Classic after a two‐year hiatus, with only one rower who had previously competed there.The Hawks finished sixth in a competitive heat and ultimately tooksecond in the Third Final.

After a solid weekend at the GW Invitational, which is a series ofdual races, the Hawks returned home to compete for the city cham‐pionship in the Kelly Cup. SJU's novices led the way as the Freshman8 ‐ also split into the Freshman 4 ‐ each won their races convincingly,while the Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 finished second intight contests.

At the Atlantic 10 Championship, which was moved a week laterin the schedule, the defending champion Hawks medaled in threeevents, but finished sixth in the team standings. The Freshman 4 cap‐tured a gold medal, the Quad took silver and the Varsity 4 finished inthird place, but the traditionally‐strong Eights did not earn anymedals. Senior Ariana McDevitt earned A‐10 All‐Conference FirstTeam honors.

The Hawks would culminate the season at the Aberdeen Dad VailRegatta, hoping to continue the success of recent years. And althoughthe Varsity 8's seven‐year streak of advancing to the Grand Final cameto an end, the defending Dad Vail champion Second Varsity 8 earneda bronze medal for its third consecutive Dad Vail medal.

Head coach Gerry Quinlan was honored at the 2012 Dad VailRegatta with the Matthew Ledwith Coach’s Award, recognizing thetop coach from the previous season.

JESUIT INVITATIONAL

Saint Joseph’s Rowing established the Jesuit Invitational in 1999 and it has become a major race in the collegiate rowing season, featuring solely Jesuit col‐leges. The Jesuit Invitational is held every year in March on the Cooper River in Pennsauken, N.J. The Casey Ferrone Memorial Trophy is awarded to the Men’s Varsity 8 champion, while the Robert Gillin, Jr., Memorial Trophy is awarded to the Women’s

Varsity 8 winner. The Cannonball Trophy is given to the overall team champion. It is named in honor of Saint Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus, who had his

leg shattered by a cannonball while defending Spain from an attack by France. The Cannonball Trophy serves as a reminder that all good things start with pain.The glory of winning is only possible by withstanding the mental and physical pain of the 2000‐meter race course. The trophy is awarded to the school withthe highest combined points in the day’s races. It is a traveling trophy which the winner returns every year. The winning team receives a small cannonball thatis theirs to keep as a reminder of their championship performance.

The Hawks’ Varsity 8 crew cap‐tured the Jesuit Invitational in2008 and started a run of fourconsecutive Jesuit titles.

The Saint Joseph’s rowing programs have a proud history of success onthe water, but a number of alums have achieved a great amount of post‐grad‐uate success in the sport as well. Mike Teti ’78, Teresa Zarzeczny Bell ’88 andRenee Hykel ’01 are three SJU legends that have gone on to even greater suc‐cesses since their days on Hawk Hill. All three have taken their rowing careersto the highest levels of international competition, making the SJU rowing pro‐gram a cradle of champions.

Arguably the best‐known oarsman in America, Mike Teti was a top Hawkrower, graduating from SJU with a sociology degree in 1978.

“Saint Joseph’s gave me the opportunity to compete and also the oppor‐tunity for a great education,” Teti says. “I owe SJU a great debt for all of theopportunities I received.”

From 1977‐93, Teti rowed on 11 national teams, including three trips tothe Olympic Games. He won 24 national championships, a gold medal in themen’s eight at the 1987 World Championships and a bronze medal in thesame event at the 1988 Olympics. He was named the 1987 United StatesRowing Male Athlete of the Year.

Teti achieved even greater notoriety as a coach, guiding the U.S. men’sopen eight squad to an unprecedented three straight world championships.He also coached the men’s four with coxswain to world championship gold.In 1996 he led the lightweight men’s four to an Olympic bronze medal beforebeing named USRowing’s Head Men’s Sweep Coach, the highest coachinghonor in the country, in October of that year.

Teti became the U.S. Olympic coach following the 2000 Games, and ledthe men’s eight boat to gold in Athens in 2004, a feat that the United Stateshad not achieved since 1964 when another coach with Hawk ties, AlRosenberg, led the Americans to victory. He also guided the U.S. Men to thebronze medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

Teti is currently the head coach of the men’s crew team at the Universityof California and was inducted into the National Rowing Federation’s Hall ofFame in 2010.

Teresa Bell is no stranger to success on the international level, either.Her Olympic dream began in the fall of 1992 when the International OlympicCommittee announced that her event, the lightweight double sculls, wouldbe a part of the Olympic Games in 1996.

In truth, Bell’s journey really began back in 1985. In that year the soph‐omore joined the Saint Joseph’s women’s rowing club team. By 1988, she wasa part‐time member of the varsity squad, and her Hawk Hill career culminat‐ed in victory in the women’s singles event at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta.Bell later went on to be a member of both the Crescent Boat Club and theFairmount Rowing Club, for whom she still rows when she is in Philadelphia.

In 1996, Bell was preparing for Olympic competition with intense work‐outs three times a day. She put in most of her work in Tennessee, the home

of the United States Women’s RowingCenter. She also spent time training inGeorgia in preparation for the OlympicTrials. Before the Olympic Games, shespent a month rowing in Europe beforereturning home for the Atlanta games.

This exhausting routine helped pre‐pare Bell for the rigors of the highest levelof international competition, but all of thework paid off in the end as Bell and herpartner, Lindsay Burns, took the silvermedal in the lightweight double sculls.

From Hawk Hill to the Olympic medalstand, Bell never forgot her roots. “Ienjoyed my experience at Saint Joseph’s,”Bell says. “It made me who I am today.Besides rowing, Saint Joseph’s taught me tobe open‐minded and that has really helpedme.”

Following the Olympics, Bell placed fifth in the same event at the 1997World Championships. She was inducted, along with Teti, as a member of theinaugural class on the Saint Joseph’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 1999.

SJU’s influence is still being felt in the rowing community as Class of oneof the top names in the sport. She is a five‐time member of the U.S. NationalTeam and competed at the World Championships every year from 2003 to2006. In 2005, the former Saint Joseph’s walk‐on took silver in the light‐weight double sculls at the World Championships in Gifu, Japan. In 2007,Hykel was the U.S. National Champion in the lightweight single sculls.

The year 2008 marked Hykel’s first trip to the Olympic Games as shetraveled to Beijing to compete in the lightweight double sculls event, thesame event Teresa Bell took silver in at the 1996 Games. Hykel and her part‐ner, former SJU assistant rowing coach Jen Goldsack, just missed the medalfinal after reaching the A/B semifinal.

Teti, Bell and Hykel are just three of more than a dozen Hawks to com‐pete internationally, as athletes such as Sean Drea and the Flanigan brothers,Donald and Richard, have done Saint Joseph’s proud at the highest levels ofthe sport.

In addition to these individuals, the Saint Joseph’s rowing program con‐tinues to write new chapters in its ever‐expanding legacy. Since 1999, theHawk men’s and women’s teams have combined to finish first or second inthe race for the coveted Jack Bratton Trophy, awarded to the Dad VailRegatta’s overall points champion, four times, most recently in 2010.

The women’s program, meanwhile, has developed into one of theregion’s most formidable.

The 2006 season was a banner one for the Hawk program as a whole, asSJU turned in its then‐best‐ever finishes at the San Diego Crew Classic andAtlantic 10 Championships, and winning gold in the Varsity 8 at the Dad VailRegatta. The 2006 team also competed in the prestigious Henley RoyalRegatta in the United Kingdom, a first for Saint Joseph’s.

In 2009, the Hawks’ Varsity 8 set a record in becoming the only team toadvance to the Grand Final of the Dad Vail Regatta for five consecutive yearsand increased that mark to six straight in 2010. SJU’s Freshman 8 alsoadvanced to the Grand Final for eight years in a row. The 2010 season culmi‐nated with Saint Joseph’s competing at Henley for the second time in schoolhistory, while in 2011, the Hawks won their first Atlantic 10 Conference teamchampionship.

The Hawks have made two trips to the Henley Royal Regatta, with the mostrecent being in 2010.

Teresa Bell was a silver medalistin the 1996 Olympic Games.

The Saint Joseph’s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for more than a half a century. One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant

motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph’s motto,“The Hawk Will Never Die”.

Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At thattime, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name wasappropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive ofthe aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJUfollowing the 1939 season.

The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its 56‐year history. It has been selected as thenation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’sBasketball Yearbook and ESPN College Basketballmagazine and was a nominee for the 2008 Mascot Hall ofFame.

A HISTORY OF SERVICEThe students of Saint Joseph’s University

are dedicated to making today’s world evenbetter. A natural spirit of volunteerism hasenabled the University’s community serviceprograms to become the most popularextracurricular activities on campus. In addi‐tion, a Service Learning program allows stu‐

dents to receive academic credit for theirwork outside the classroom.

SJU students take frequent advantageof the artistic and cultural resourcesPhiladelphia offers, as well.
