Returning the core of last year’s starters and adding a trio of new-comers that will contribute immediately, the Saint Joseph’s women’stennis team is set to accomplish big things in 2012-13. Led by fifth-year head coach Ian Crookenden, the Hawks bring back five starters, and eight veterans in all, as they look to prove they belong amongstthe top teams in the expanded 16-team Atlantic 10.

Arguably the top player in SJU history through her first three sea-sons, redshirt junior Casey Robinson enters the season within reachof the program record for career singles wins. The only Hawk to earnAtlantic 10 All-Conference honors twice, she enters this season fourthall-time in career singles wins (41). An All-Conference First Teamselection last year, Robinson is coming off a career year in 2011-12 asshe set the SJU single-season mark for singles wins, finishing the sea-son with a 23-6 mark and an 8-14 record in doubles play.

Sharing time between the second and third singles flights, juniorDevi Jadeja and sophomore Aurora Davis add success and experienceto the top of the Hawks’ lineup. Combining for 23 singles wins over-all, Jadeja has posted 24 singles wins over her first two seasons at SJU,while Davis finished second on the team last year with 14 singles vic-tories. Serving as a captain this year, Esposito went 3-4 in singles match-es last year, while Procyk and Vona each split time between No. 6 sin-gles and No. 3 doubles.

Opened in the Fall of 2009, the Saint Joseph’s tennis program moved to theSJU Tennis Complex at the Maguire Campus. The new Tennis Complex adds six newcourts as well as new offices and locker rooms for both the women’s and men’stennis teams. Under head coach Ian Crookenden, Saint Joseph’s has mapped out aplan to extend the program’s reach on campus, regionally and nationally, startingwith the Hawks’ new home.

The long-time home of the Episcopal Academy, the 38-acre James J. MaguireCampus adds 52 classrooms, eight full laboratories, 113 offices, and 14.5 acres ofsports fields to Saint Joseph’s University's current 65-acre footprint.

Prior to moving across campus to the new SJU Tennis Complex, the Hawksplayed their matches on Finnesey Courts. Adjacent to Finnesey Field, the FinneseyCourts were home to the Hawk women’s and men’s tennis teams since the late1940s.

After briefly disappearing in the late 1990s due to Mandeville Hall’s construc-tion, the Finnesey Courts were refurbished in the summer of 2000 to provide a bet-ter playing facility for the athletes. The Saint Joseph’s women’s tennis team com-piled a record of 82-134 on Finnesey Courts from 1983-2009.

Saint Joseph’s began competition playing its home matches at the nearbyNarberth courts. When courts were first built on campus, they were located whereBellarmine Hall now stands. Due to Bellarmine’s construction in the summer of1960, however, the Finnesey Courts were torn down and rebuilt in their currentlocation.

With the addition of the SJU Tennis Complex, the Hawks now offer 10 courtsand year-round state-of-the-art training facilities for student-athletes.

A two-time national collegiate champion, a highly-successful professional player and a talented coach,Ian Crookenden enters his fifth year as the director and head coach of the women's and men's tennis pro-grams at Saint Joseph’s.

Coming to Hawk Hill in August of 2008, Crookenden has quickly transformed the Saint Joseph’s tennisprogram into one of the up-and-coming clubs in the region. Crookenden has switched the focus of SJU’sschedule to a year-round format, adding several invitationals and the ITA Regionals to the slate. In additionto the scheduling upgrade, he also helped spearhead the recently-constructed SJU Tennis Complex at theMaguire Campus.

In his first season at Saint Joseph’s in 2008-09, Crookendenhelped the Hawks surpass expectations, finishing tied for 11th atthe Atlantic 10 Championships. Despite not having a full roster formost of the season due to injury, he guided four Hawks to double-digit victories. Jhennifer Kedzierski and Krysta Contino’s 12 winsapiece tied for the seventh most in a single-season at SJU, whileMaggie Mullaney’s 10 wins at No. 2 singles was the second most ina year in that flight.

The 2009-10 season saw Saint Joseph’s continue to excel underCrookenden as Kedzierski and freshman Casey Robinson becamethe first set of Hawks to compete at the ITA Regionalsin decades.Kedzierski would go on to finish her career second all-time in pro-gram history with 42 singles wins, 26 of which came underCrookenden’s guidance. Additionally, SJU tied for 11th place at theAtlantic 10 Championships, with several Hawks challenging thehigher-seeded opponents in earlier matches.

Fighting through an injury-ravaged season in 2010-11, the Hawks still had several standout performanc-es under Crookenden’s guidance, highlighted by Robinson becoming just the third Hawk to garner Atlantic10 All-Conference honors. Robinson, Mullaney and freshman Devi Jadeja all capped the year with double-digit singles wins that finished amongst the top 10 in program history.

Competing with its most talented squad in recent years, the 2011-12 team posted its most wins in fiveyears and had several standout individual performances throughout the season. Behind a record-setting 23singles wins from Robinson and 32 combined wins from the freshman trio Aurora Davis, Kelly Mulquin andLauren Roy, the Hawks won nine matches in total. Individually, Robinson became the first SJU player in teamhistory to earn A-10 All-Conference honors multiple times as she garnered First Team accolades.Additionally, Kate Dowd added her name to the SJU record books, finishing with the third-most wins at No.6 singles with 10.

Prior to Hawk Hill, Crookenden began his collegiate coaching career at Wake Forest. Starting in 1984, heserved as head men's tennis coach and indoor tennis club director at Wake Forest University for 12 seasons.Playing in the competitive Atlantic Coast Conference, Crookenden posted a 160-180 record and helped nineplayers earn All-ACC honors from 1984 to 1996. In just his third season, Crookenden coached ChristianDallwitz and Marco Lucioni to No. 4 and No. 6 ACC Singles Flight titles – just the fifth and sixth Demon

Deacon players to have done so at that point. In 1988, Crookenden earned another first in Wake Forest program history as he coached the doubles pair of Dallwitz and Mark Greenan to

All-American honors. After guiding the pair to the ACC No. 1 Doubles Flight title, Crookenden lent his experience to the duo as they surprisedthe field and advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Doubles Championships.

Adding to his stellar coaching streak, Crookenden’s ability to recruit on an international level shined in 1990 as Frenchman Gilles Amelinebecame the first Demon Deacon to compete in the NCAA Singles Championships and earn All-American honors.

One of the top players in the illustrious history of UCLA tennis, Crookenden was a standout from 1965 to 1967, helping the Bruins to theNCAA team title in 1965 and to second place in 1966 and 1967.

As a rookie, Crookenden made a major impact with his new team, helping UCLA to an 11-0 overall record and the national championship.Teaming with the legendary Arthur Ashe, the pair claimed the fifth NCAA doubles title in program history.

The following season, Crookenden became just the second player in UCLA history to claim two NCAA doubles titles. Teaming with Charlie

2011-12 YEAR IN REVIEW

Competing with its most talented squad in recent years, the 2011-12Saint Joseph’s women’s tennis team posted its most wins in five years andhad several standout individual performances throughout the season.

Coming off an Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team selection the pre-vious season, junior Casey Robinson turned in arguably the best single seasonin Hawk history. Setting a new Saint Joseph’s record for singles victories in ayear (23), Robinson became the first player in program history to earn con-secutive Atlantic 10 All-Conference honors, earning First Team distinction thisyear.

Playing at the top singles flight, Robinson posted a 23-6 record and in theprocess set a new single-season mark for wins on Hawk Hill. Among the vic-tories, she went 8-3 against A-10 foes and 17-5 at No. 1 singles. Robinson's 17wins at first singles set a new single-season record for the flight, while her.793 winning percentage is the second best for a single year. Amassing a 41-17 record through her first three years, Robinson will enter next seasonfourth all-time in career wins (41) and second all-time in wins at No. 1 singles(32).

Earning the start at the second flight for most of the season, sophomoreDevi Jadeja finished fourth on the squad in singles wins (nine) and tied fresh-man Aurora Davis for the most wins in doubles matches (nine).

Davis and fellow rookies Kelly Mulquin and Lauren Roy made immediateimpacts for Saint Joseph’s, combining for 32 singles wins.

Playing between the top three flights, Davis had an extremely produc-tive season, finishing second on the team in overall singles wins (14) and lead-ing SJU in wins at the second flight (five) and third flight (six). Additionally,Davis teamed with Robinson for five wins at No. 1 doubles and finished theyear with eight of her doubles victories at the top flight.

Proving to be a versatile player who could play anywhere from third tothe sixth flight, Mulquin posted 12 singles wins in her rookie campaign withthe Hawks, ranking third on the team. Like Mulquin, Roy also gave SJU depthand flexibility to its roster as the French-born newcomer tallied six singleswins between the third and fifth flights.

Additionally, the Hawks’ three seniors - Laura Matz, Tara Walsh and KateDowd - helped usher in a new era of SJU tennis. Starting with the addition ofthe SJU Tennis Complex, the senior class saw the team improve steadily overeach season.

A four-year letterwinner, Matz capped her career with 17 singles wins, adding versatility to the lineup with her ability to play each singles flight.

Walsh, serving as team captain, posted her best season on Hawk Hill, winning five singles matches and finishing her career with 12 victories.

Finishing with the third most wins all-time at sixth singles with 10, Dowdfinished the year with a 7-2 mark, with six coming at the sixth flight to tie forfifth most in a year.

Also competing during the year were junior Jenna Procyk and sopho-more Michele Vona.

As a team, the Hawks started slow despite being competitive in nearlyevery match. A few wins in Florida helped SJU getting going in the right direc-tion, as the team flourished at the end of the regular season, winning four ofits last five matches, including a win over Villanova.

Seeded 11th in the A-10 Championship, the Hawks put forth a strongeffort against higher seed George Washington. Saint Joseph’s had two play-ers at match point when the contest was called in the Colonials’ favor.

Even though the season came to a close for the Hawks, the strong per-formances, both as a team and individually, has Saint Joseph’s poised tobecome one of the top teams in the A-10 and the region.

The Saint Joseph’s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for more than a half a century. One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant

motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph’s motto,“The Hawk Will Never Die”.

Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At thattime, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name wasappropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive ofthe aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJUfollowing the 1939 season.

The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its 56-year history. It has been selected as thenation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’sBasketball Yearbook and ESPN College Basketball magazine and was a nominee for the 2008 Mascot Hall ofFame.

THE JESUIT TRADITIONOF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognized aca-demic reputation is confirmed by ongoingacknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News &World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tra-dition of intellectual inquiry and personalconcern manifests itself in small, challengingclasses taught by a caring faculty. Graduateassistants do not teach, so undergraduatescan be sure they are receiving the very besteducational experience from trained experts.One-on-one interaction between studentsand faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s.

A solid liberal arts curriculum providesacross-the-board learning for every student.Supporting that curriculum are comprehen-sive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that preparesstudents not only for employment and grad-uate school, but for life itself.

In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which hous-es the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, theCenter for Food Marketing and the region'sfirst "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms."An 87,000-square-foot international academ-ic center featuring state-of-the-art distancelearning technology, it is located near thecorner of 54th Street and City Avenue.

A HISTORY OF SERVICEThe students of Saint Joseph’s University

are dedicated to making today’s world evenbetter. A natural spirit of volunteerism hasenabled the University’s community serviceprograms to become the most popularextracurricular activities on campus. In addi-

tion, a Service Learning program allows stu-dents to receive academic credit for theirwork outside the classroom.
