Coming off arguably the best season in program history, SaintJoseph’s enters the 2013-14 season prepared to build off its successand prove it is one of the better teams in the Atlantic 10. Picked to fin-ish eighth, the Hawks want to prove prognosticators wrong and finishamong the top schools in the conference.

“We want to live up to our preseason ranking and exceed that,”said head coach Ian Crookenden. “Other people’s expectation of ourprogram doesn’t live up to ours, so we use that incentive. Beingpicked eighth in the preseason is an increase, but we believe we arebetter than that.”

Returning its top six singles players, and nine letterwinners intotal, Saint Joseph’s will rely on its upperclassmen to set the tone forthe season.

Backed by A-10 All-Conference performers redshirt senior CaseyRobinson and junior Aurora Davis, the Hawks recorded 13 victories aseason ago as the pair set the single-season record for singles winswith 25 apiece. A three-time All-Conference honoree, Robinson holdsthe career record for singles wins (66) and wins at No. 1 singles (52).

After two productive seasons moving up the singles flights, Davishas provided stability at the second flight and will challenge for thetop position this season. Currently fifth all-time in career singles vic-tories (39), she set the single-season record for wins at No. 2 singleslast year (18) and is tied for first in all-time wins at No. 2 singles (23).

Senior Devi Jadeja, juniors Kelly Mulquin and Lauren Roy andsophomore Kristina Eisenbrand gave the Hawks a boost in the thirdthrough sixth singles flights and look to do so again this year.

Tied for sixth all-time in career singles wins (37), Jadeja enters herfinal season fourth all-time in career victories at No. 2 singles flight(15) and tied for fifth in all-time wins at No. 4 singles (11).

Having her best season to date last year, Mulquin posted thefourth most singles wins in a single season (17) and set the single-sea-son record for wins at No. 5 singles (14).

Ranking four on the team in singles wins, Roy finished with a 14-10 record overall and 10-7 mark at No. 6 singles, while Eisenbrandposted a strong rookie campaign winning the Second Singles Flighttitle at the SJU Invitational, winning a team-best seven matches at No.3 singles and finishing with 13 singles wins overall.

Adding depth to the lineup and challenging for starting spots aresenior Michele Vona, sophomores Anne Marie Devlin and AriannePolatnick and newcomers Sarah Contrata, Mary-Margaret Ewens,Claire Minnoe and Alex Zachem.

“We are at the point in the program where we have it sorted outthat we are losing and bringing in two good players every year,” saidCrookenden. “We lose our seniors, but the juniors can fill in the tophalf and we have some excellent talent in our underclassmen.”

Playing another competitive schedule, the Hawks will face someof the top competition in the area this year as they look to contendfor an A-10 title in April. In the fall, SJU faces some of the best playersin the region as the Hawks compete at the Towson Tiger Classic, theannual Saint Joseph’s Invitational and the ITA Atlantic Regionals.

Saint Joseph’s begins match play in January with eight matchesslated against A-10 opponents. Competing in 21 matches over athree-month period, the Hawks want to improve upon their early sea-son selection come the conference tournament in late April.

“The schedule works out well as we face tough teams that willchallenge us early,” Crookenden said. “We will have an interestingweekend when we play Massachusetts, Fordham and Rhode Island. Two of those teams were picked ahead of us, but we feel at that stagewe will be hitting our stride and can really challenge them. And hope-fully move up a little in the seedings before the tournament.”

Blending veteran experience, talented newcomers and a chal-lenging schedule, Saint Joseph’s is again set to challenge for theAtlantic 10 crown this season.Junior Kelly Mulquin (left) and senior Devi Jadeja

Opened in the Fall of 2009, the Saint Joseph’s tennis program moved to theSJU Tennis Complex at the Maguire Campus. The new Tennis Complex adds six newcourts as well as new offices and locker rooms for both the women’s and men’stennis teams. Under head coach Ian Crookenden, Saint Joseph’s has mapped out aplan to extend the program’s reach on campus, regionally and nationally, startingwith the Hawks’ new home.

The long-time home of the Episcopal Academy, the 38-acre James J. MaguireCampus adds 52 classrooms, eight full laboratories, 113 offices, and 14.5 acres ofsports fields to Saint Joseph’s University's current 65-acre footprint.

Prior to moving across campus to the new SJU Tennis Complex, the Hawksplayed their matches on Finnesey Courts. Adjacent to Finnesey Field, the FinneseyCourts were home to the Hawk women’s and men’s tennis teams since the late1940s.

After briefly disappearing in the late 1990s due to Mandeville Hall’s construc-tion, the Finnesey Courts were refurbished in the summer of 2000 to provide a bet-ter playing facility for the athletes. The Saint Joseph’s women’s tennis team com-piled a record of 82-134 on Finnesey Courts from 1983-2009.

Saint Joseph’s began competition playing its home matches at the nearbyNarberth courts. When courts were first built on campus, they were located whereBellarmine Hall now stands. Due to Bellarmine’s construction in the summer of1960, however, the Finnesey Courts were torn down and rebuilt in their currentlocation.

With the addition of the SJU Tennis Complex, the Hawks now offer 10 courtsand year-round state-of-the-art training facilities for student-athletes.

A two-time national collegiate champion, a highly-successful professional player and a talented coach,Ian Crookenden enters his sixth year as the director and head coach of the women's and men's tennis pro-grams at Saint Joseph’s.

Coming to Hawk Hill in August of 2008, Crookenden has quickly transformed the Saint Joseph’s tennisprogram into one of the up-and-coming clubs in the region. Crookenden has switched the focus of SJU’sschedule to a year-round format, adding several invitationals and the ITA Regionals to the slate. In additionto the scheduling upgrade, he also helped spearhead the recently-constructed SJU Tennis Complex at theMaguire Campus.

In his first season at Saint Joseph’s in 2008-09, Crookenden helped the Hawks surpass expectations, fin-ishing tied for 11th at the Atlantic 10 Championships. Despite not having a full roster for most of the sea-son due to injury, he guided four Hawks to double-digit victories. Jhennifer Kedzierski and Krysta Contino’s12 wins apiece tied for the seventh most in a single-season at SJU, while Maggie Mullaney’s 10 wins at No.2 singles was the second most in a year in that flight.

The 2009-10 season saw Saint Joseph’s continue to excel under Crookenden as Kedzierski and freshmanCasey Robinson became the first set of Hawks to compete at the ITA Regionalsin decades. Kedzierski wouldgo on to finish her career second all-time in program history with 42 singles wins, 26 of which came underCrookenden’s guidance. Additionally, SJU again tied for 11th place at the Atlantic 10 Championships, withseveral Hawks challenging the higher-seeded opponents in earlier matches.

Fighting through an injury-ravaged season in 2010-11, the Hawks still had several standout performanc-es under Crookenden’s guidance, highlighted by Robinson becoming just the third Hawk to garner Atlantic10 All-Conference honors. Robinson, Mullaney and freshman Devi Jadeja all capped the year with double-digit singles wins that finished amongst the top 10 in program history.

Competing with its most talented squad in recent years, the 2011-12 team posted its most wins in fiveyears and had several standout individual performances throughout the season. Behind a record-setting 23singles wins from Robinson and 32 combined wins from the freshman trio of Aurora Davis, Kelly Mulquinand Lauren Roy, the Hawks won nine matches in total. Individually, Robinson became the first SJU player inteam history to earn A-10 All-Conference honors multiple times as she garnered First Team accolades.Additionally, Kate Dowd added her name to the SJU record books, finishing with the third-most wins at No.6 singles with 10.

Backed by A-10 All-Conference honorees in Robinson and Davis, Saint Joseph’s posted a 13-11 overallrecord in 2012-13, setting the single-season mark for wins in the process. Additionally, Robinson, Davis andMulquin, Roy and Michele Vona all set new career-records for wins, while Robinson and Davis tied for themost wins in a season with 25.

Prior to Hawk Hill, Crookenden began his collegiate coaching career at Wake Forest. title, Crookenden lent his experience to the duo as they surprised the field and advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Doubles Championships.Adding to his stellar coaching streak, Crookenden’s ability to recruit on an international level shined in 1990 as Frenchman Gilles Ameline

became the first Demon Deacon to compete in the NCAA Singles Championships and earn All-American honors. One of the top players in the illustrious history of UCLA tennis, Crookenden was a standout from 1965 to 1967, helping the Bruins to the

NCAA team title in 1965 and to second place in 1966 and 1967.As a rookie, Crookenden made a major impact with his new team, helping UCLA to an 11-0 overall record and the national championship.

Teaming with the legendary Arthur Ashe, the pair claimed the fifth NCAA doubles title in program history. The following season, Crookenden became just the second player in UCLA history to claim two NCAA doubles titles. Teaming with Charlie

Pasarell, the duo earned the sixth national doubles title for the Bruins. Serving as captain in 1967, Crookenden earned his third straight All-American accolade, leading UCLA to a 12-2 mark and a runner-up finish at the NCAA Championships.

The Saint Joseph’s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for more than a half a century. One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant

motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph’s motto,“The Hawk Will Never Die”.

Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At thattime, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name wasappropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive ofthe aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJUfollowing the 1939 season.

The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its 56-year history. It has been selected as thenation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’sBasketball Yearbook and ESPN College Basketballmagazine and was a nominee for the 2008 Mascot Hall ofFame.

THE UNIVERSITY

Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is anindependent, Catholic, Jesuit universityteaching disciplined reasoning, effectivecommunication and a love of learning. FromWillings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to StilesStreet in North Philadelphia to its currentlocation on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s hascontinued to grow and change with thetimes. The University combines the Jesuit tra-dition of academic excellence, a history ofservice and an ideal campus location to pro-duce successful students who strive to makea good world even better.

Full-time, undergraduate day enrollmentcomprises approximately 4,670 students.Graduate, evening and executive programspush total enrollment to more than 8,500students.

THE JESUIT TRADITIONOF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognized aca-demic reputation is confirmed by ongoingacknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News &World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tra-dition of intellectual inquiry and personalconcern manifests itself in small, challengingclasses taught by a caring faculty.
