The Saint Joseph’s men’s soccer team returns 16 letterwinners, including five starters and six offensive players that combined for 68percent of last season’s scoring, in 2014. Despite the loss of sixstarters from the 2013 squad, the Hawks will look to continue on lastseason’s momentum of making the Atlantic 10 Championship post-season for the first time since 1994 and for just the third time in pro-gram history. Under the direction of fifth-year head coach DonD’Ambra, the Hawks return seven upperclassmen and a core group ofsophomores and add 11 newcomers this fall. Senior tri-captainsTommy Brooks, Mike Glazer, and Jake Nelson will lead the Hawksinto the 2014 campaign.
"Our staff is excited about the upcoming season,” said D’Ambra.“We have a great mix of older and younger players who have thepotential to have great seasons. The team has worked extremely hardthis preseason and I hope their hard work pays off during the season."
OFFENSEA two-time Philadelphia Soccer Six All-Star selection, junior Tim
Lazorko returns for his third season of patrolling SJU’s midfield in2014. Lazorko owns 27 career points on nine goals and nine assistsand is SJU’s returning leader in both categories, tallying four goals andfour assists in 2013.
"Timmy is one of our most talented players, and he has anextremely high Soccer IQ on the field,” said D’Ambra. “There are areasof his game that still need improvement, and he has the potential tobecome a top player in the Atlantic 10 Conference.” A pair of seniors in senior tri-captain forward Mike Glazer and
redshirt senior midfielder Jake Mulinge will also be expected to bol-ster the Hawks’ offensive attack this season. Glazer tallied one goaland one assist in 16 starts last season and has proven that he can cre-ate his own offensive opportunities; the senior boasts 79 career shotsand posted a .444 SOG percentage last season. Mulinge adds a phe-nomenal speed element on the wing and was a catalyst in five startsand 13 appearances off the bench last season.
"Mike and Jake our two of the team’s hardest workers,” saidD’Ambra. “They lead by example and set the standards high. Theyboth have the potential to make impact plays on the field, and I hopetheir hard works pays off."
Saint Joseph’s will look to mesh this veteran experience with atrio of sophomore midfielders that boasted phenomenal rookie cam-paigns last season in Bliss Harris, Sam Irvin, and Eric Jordan.
Harris, a Philadelphia Soccer Six All-Rookie selection proved to bea versatile force in his freshman season; after opening his collegiatecareer by earning a spot as a starting defender, Harris then went onto take on the role of an attacking midfielder against George Masonat the Atlantic 10 Championships. Harris played the full 110 minutesof the match and took a team-best two shots in the contest.
A fellow Philadelphia Soccer Six All-Rookie selection, Irvin wasextremely consistent as a defensive midfielder in 13 appearanceswith seven starts and could also be utilized as a scoring threat thisseason.
Jordan provided SJU’s spark of energy off the bench as heappeared in all 19 games, averaging 44 minutes per match, andreturns as SJU’s third-leading returning scorer from last year’s squad.
"Bliss, Sam and Eric are young but have the skill set to make dif-ference-making plays,” said D’Ambra. “All three players have madetremendous strides in their development and have high ability, and Iexpect great things from them.”

Junior forward Emmanuel Temeh and sophomore forward MoriDiane also delivered notable speed and fervor off the bench for theHawks last season and will join sophomore midfielder Mike Stuski inadding to Saint Joseph’s depth on the attack this fall.
Two of the biggest impact incomers to the offensive end of thefield will be Mark Colville, a junior transfer out of Manor College, andfreshman Mike Akinkoye.
“Mark will be a big scoring threat in the attacking third,” saidD’Ambra. “He is able to score a lot of goals and we will be able to uti-lize him as an attacking midfielder. Mike has a lot of potential and isvery athletic.”
Saint Joseph’s additional newcomers, including sophomore MaxPozzessere and freshmen Matt Crawford, Liam Stenson, and BenZambetti, will round out the Hawks’ offense in 2014.
DEFENSESenior tri-captain Tommy Brooks will anchor Saint Joseph’s
defensive unit this season. Brooks has started all 52 games of hiscareer, and after making the change from a defensive midfielder to asole defensive player for the 2012 season, he has led SJU’s back line.
"Tommy is a natural leader, hard worker, and strong defenderand will battle with the top players in the country,” said D’Ambra. “Hehas a heart of a lion and will be the on-field team leader as a seniorthis year.”
Fellow senior tri-captain Jake Nelson and classmate BrandonStevis will also lock down the veteran defensive unit. Nelson madethe switch from an offensive-minded midfielder to a defender for A-10 action last season and played full matches in the A-10Quarterfinals in addition to wins over nationally ranked VCU,Fordham, and George Washington.
"Jake is very talented and smart on the field,” said D’Ambra. “Heis extremely calm under pressure and has very good field vision andpassing ability. He will be a major attacking threat out of the back thisyear, and I am excited to see him play this year."
Stevis adds additional veteran experience and understanding onthe defensive end of the field and made 10 starts in 13 appearancesin 2013.
The graduation of Brendan Reilly vacates the center back posi-tion, and sophomore Coupar Lipp has been playing extremely wellduring preseason and is the front runner to win the starting centraldefender spot. Lipp made eight appearances on the back line last sea-son and could break through to a starting position alongside the sen-ior veterans.
Sophomore Ted Foley impressed in the spring exhibition seasonwhile classmate Chris McCrea and freshmen Chris DiSabatino andTom Santilli will compete for minutes of SJU’s back line in 2014.
“Chris has the fight like Tommy Brooks,” said D’Ambra of therookie DiSabatino. “He is a versatile and aggressive player.”
GOALKEEPERSThe graduation of three senior netminders, including starter
Andrew D’Ottavi, from last year’s squad opens the goalkeeper posi-tion for the 2014 Hawks. Throughout preseason camp, sophomoreJay Higbee and freshman Bobby Edwards have been competing forthe starting spot between the pipes. Higbee saw 45 minutes of actionlast season in the second half at Siena, where the then-rookie allowedjust one goal and made three saves in his first collegiate appearance.
“Jay is a great athlete, solid shot stopper and makes good deci-sions when to come out for balls,” said D’Ambra. “He had a strongspring season and looks good in camp."

One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk has beenflapping its wings for 58 years. The Hawk, which celebrated its golden anniversary in2005-06, is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughoutevery basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph's motto, "The Hawk Will NeverDie."
Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks”since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the stu-dent body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” win-ning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typ-ified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aeri-al attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontin-ued at SJU following the 1939 season.
The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its over 50-year history. It hasbeen selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, SportsIllustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook, ESPN College Basketball maga-zine and was nominated for the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2008.

Sweeney Field, formerly known as Finnesey Field, hasbeen home to 10 different varsity squads at Saint Joseph’sUniversity in over 80 years of use. Opened in 1929 as hometo the SJU football squad, the field has undergone numer-ous changes over the years and has been home to over1,200 SJU varsity games, matches and track meets. Thepitch is the current home of the varsity men’s and women’ssoccer and lacrosse teams.
The field was renamed Sweeney Field in Fall 2013 uponcompletion of an extensive expansion project. The venuehas significantly increased the seating capacity for SJU’s var-sity lacrosse and soccer programs. The new name recog-nizes the contributions of Sean S. Sweeney ’94 (MBA), amember of the University’s Board of Trustees and the leadbenefactor to the renovation project. Sweeney Field wasblessed in conjunction with Hawktoberfest on October 12,2013 while a formal dedication was held on April 5, 2014.
The current expansion includes the addition of 1,200permanent seats to the hillside nearest to the University’siconic Barbelin Hall as well as the addition of 1,100 portableseats on the opposite side of the field, increasing total seat-ing capacity to 3,000. In addition, the facility will includes anew state of the art press box and enhanced sound system.
Opened in 1929 and planned as the centerpiece to a70,000-seat football stadium, SJU was forced to eliminatethe field’s original grandstand and hillside seating in 1960due to the construction of Villiger (now Post) Hall/BluettTheater. Since 1990, the field has undergone a number of
upgrades and enhancements designed to expand usage andfunctionality, including installation of AstroTurf artificialsurface prior to the currently TigerTurf surface, lights, andbleachers. Additionally, the track received a new coat ofrubber material in 2009 to better suit the athletes who useit for all seasons.
Currently the home of SJU men’s and women’s varsitysoccer and lacrosse teams, Sweeney Field has also served asthe home venue for Hawk baseball, field hockey, footballand softball, in addition to peripheral usage by the men’sand women’s track teams, along with countless club, intra-mural and recreational activities. Legend has it that a 1777Revolutionary War skirmish took place on the site.
Finnesey Field had been named after the late James T.Finnesey. A native of Wyncote, Pa., parishioner at the Gesuand president of a local auto manufacturer, he was a mem-ber of SJU’s Foundation Committee, which was establishedin 1922 to raise support for the College’s relocation toPhiladelphia’s Wynnefield neighborhood. Finnesey was alead donor to the stadium project in 1927.
The Saint Joseph’s men’s soccer program was startedin 1958 and played every season but one (1960) atSweeney. The squad has compiled an overall mark of 168-194-34 in 54 seasons at Hawk Hill, the most victories of anyprogram on Sweeney Field. SJU opened its playing groundswith a 6-0 victory over Rutgers-South Jersey in October 24,1958.
In 1990, artificial turf replaced the grass, makingSweeney a truly multi-purpose facility. In 1994 theinstallation of lights furthered the use of thegrounds, while new bleachers in 2003 on the hillnext to Mandeville Hall were another touch of ren-ovation to a historic stadium.
Baseball called Sweeney home from 1947 to1959. The field hockey team played on SweeneyField until 2007 and now practices and hostsgames on Ellen Ryan Field on the Maguire Campus. The location has also been home to women’s soc-cer since 1996 and the field hockey team wrappedup its last season on Sweeney in 2007. Thewomen’s lacrosse squad is 74-104 in 21 seasons onHawk Hill while the men’s lacrosse team has com-piled an overall 66-88 mark in 21 seasons onSweeney Field.
Overall, the site has seen 1,259 games enteringthe 2014-15 academic year, and SJU teams puttogether a total record of 570-633-56.

On March 2, 1975, the idea of what isnow the Atlantic 10 Conference was con-ceived. What started as an eight-school,men’s basketball-only affiliation has growninto a 14-university, 21-sport league that isuniversally hailed as one of the best confer-ences in the country.
That growth and prominence is a directresult of the ideals and commitments of themember institutions of the Atlantic 10 –Davidson College, The University of Dayton,Duquesne University, Fordham University,George Mason University, The GeorgeWashington University, La Salle University,University of Massachusetts, University ofRhode Island, University of Richmond, St.Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph'sUniversity, Saint Louis University and VirginiaCommonwealth University.
The Atlantic 10 was proactive in navigat-ing sweeping conference realignment, adding George Mason University for 2013and Davidson College in 2014. The additionsfollow a very successful first year by VirginiaCommonwealth University, which began fullmembership on July 1, 2012. The league con-tinues to draw national praise for its deci-sions during conference realignment inselecting institutions driven by academicsand basketball. The league was deemed the“winner” of conference realignment in 2011-12. The three additions were guided by thefive-year Strategic Initiative Plan that wasadopted during the 2010-11 academic year.
The 14 member institutions of the A-10are united and strengthened by their diversi-ty. Each is extraordinary in its educationalmission, whether of a Catholic faith, a privateuniversity or a land grant institution. Thevaried pursuits of each member prove thatthere are many threads that weave the fabricfor a great conference.
The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a totalpopulation of over 76.5 million people withinits geographic footprint of eight states andthe District of Columbia, will crown champi-ons in 21 sports this year: baseball, men'sand women's basketball, men's and women's
cross country, field hockey, men's golf,women’s lacrosse, men's and women'sindoor and outdoor track & field, women'srowing, men's and women's soccer, softball,men's and women's swimming & diving,men's and women's tennis, and women's vol-leyball.
The presidents and chancellors ofAtlantic 10 institutions, in conjunction withAtlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V.McGlade, have made a strong commitmentto making the academic and athletics equa-tion a successful one. Over the years, theleague membership has strived to better rec-ognize the academic accomplishments of itsstudent-athletes. The Commissioner's HonorRoll, which cites every Atlantic 10 student-athlete with a 3.5 grade point average or bet-ter, recognized 2,653 student-athletes in2013-14.
The league sponsors Academic All-Conference teams in each of its sports andhonors two student-athletes as the A-10Student-Athletes of the Year. Moreover, theAtlantic 10 provides 10 postgraduate scholar-ships with $7,000 grants to selected student-athletes. In 2013-14, nearly 200 student-ath-letes earned Academic All-Conference recog-nition.
The Atlantic 10 Conference annuallyearns high marks in the NCAA Academic met-rics. This includes ranking fifth among all 32Division I Conferences in the AcademicProgress Rate (APR) and in the GraduationSuccess Rate (GSR) in the past year’sannouncements.
Success on the playing field has mirroredthe A-10’s classroom prowess, with theleague earning NCAA postseason bids in eachof its 21 sports, including two men’s soccerbids and a record 13 men’s and women’sbasketball bids. Men’s basketball in theAtlantic 10 saw a record six teams earn NCAATournament berths and for the seventhstraight year an A-10 team advanced to thesecond weekend of play when Dayton madea run to the Elite Eight.

JACK DUNNLegendary Jack Dunn, the first-ever coach of the Saint Joseph’s soc-
cer team, has done more for the Hawk program than any one individ-
ual. The team’s head coach from 1958 through 1975, Dunn compiled
a career record of 120-57-23 (.658) in his 18 years at the helm, leading
SJU to the NCAA Tournament in 1966, 1971 and 1972.
The 76-year-old Dunn played on the 1952 U.S. Olympic team and
went on to a long playing career in the old German-American
Professional League.
Dunn, who also served as an assistant coach with the Hawks in the mid-90s, was one of
20 inaugural inductees to the Saint Joseph’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 1999.

Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is anindependent, Catholic, Jesuit universityteaching disciplined reasoning, effectivecommunication and a love of learning. FromWillings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to StilesStreet in North Philadelphia to its currentlocation on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s hascontinued to grow and change with thetimes. The University combines the Jesuit tra-dition of academic excellence, a history ofservice and an ideal campus location to pro-duce successful students who strive to makea good world even better.
Full-time, undergraduate day enrollmentcomprises approximately 4,670 students.Graduate, evening and executive programspush total enrollment to more than 8,000 stu-dents.
THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCESaint Joseph’s nationally-recognized aca-
demic reputation is confirmed by ongoingacknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News &World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tra-dition of intellectual inquiry and personalconcern manifests itself in small, challengingclasses taught by a caring faculty. Graduateassistants do not teach, so undergraduatescan be sure they are receiving the very besteducational experience from trained experts.One-on-one interaction between studentsand faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s.
A solid liberal arts curriculum providesacross-the-board learning for every student.Supporting that curriculum are comprehen-sive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that preparesstudents not only for employment and grad-uate school, but for life itself.
In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which hous-es the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, theCenter for Food Marketing and the region'sfirst "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms."An 87,000-square-foot international academ-ic center featuring state-of-the-art distancelearning technology, it is located near thecorner of 54th Street and City Avenue.
A HISTORY OF SERVICEThe students of Saint Joseph’s University
are dedicated to making today’s world evenbetter. A natural spirit of volunteerism hasenabled the University’s community serviceprograms to become the most popularextracurricular activities on campus. In addi-tion, a Service Learning program allows stu-dents to receive academic credit for theirwork outside the classroom.
SJU offers local, national and internation-al opportunities for student service. FromNorth Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from
New Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains,Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuitmission of serving those in need. TheThanksgiving Dinner Dance for area seniorcitizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival forthe handicapped are two annual student-runevents that draw thousands of special visitorsto campus for fun and friendship.
IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATIONSJU’s City Avenue location combines the
best of dynamic Philadelphia with the subur-ban, residential setting of the elegant MainLine. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two coun-ties, allowing students to literally enjoy thebest of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cul-tural, social and athletic attractions, is easilyaccessible, while the safety, serenity andgreenery of a suburban campus are right athand.
The friendly atmosphere and close-knitcampus ensure that students don’t get lost ineither the literal or the figurative sense atSaint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computerand athletic facilities add a big-time “feel” tothis growing university.

prepared. The University boasts an excellentrecord of placing its graduates in first-timejobs, professional schools and otheradvanced degree programs. Part-time work
and internships provide real-world experi-ences, the kind which delight future employ-ers. And with its many diverse student organ-izations, SJU offers ample opportunities toassume leadership positions.
An extensive on-campus recruitmentprogram provides graduates with a headstart in their employment search. Regularmeetings with faculty advisors, along withadvisory programs in the health professionsand in pre-law, assist students who wish to fur-ther their schooling.
PHILADELPHIASJU’s Philadelphia location gives students
access to two worlds. The campus resemblesa park, surrounded by the stately homes ofPhiladelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs.Yet students have access to the cultural, commercial and recreational activities ofdowntown Philadelphia -– only a short rideaway.
