Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium, home of Widener’s football team since 1994, is in its eighth year as home of our men’s and women’s soccer programs. The move was made following the installment of a new FieldTurf surface in 2005. The stadium also had a new scoreboard installed and the locker rooms were refurbished that year. Seating for over 4,000 spectators is available. The stadium also serves as home for Widener’s conference championship men’s lacrosse and track & field squads.

COACHING STAFF

Brian Sheehan • Head Coach Brian Sheehan is in his seventh season as Widener’s women’s soccer coach. The program has enjoyed im-mense success during his time with five straight seasons posting double-digit wins from 2006-10 and he hopes a new run begins. A 14-6-1 record in 2007 fashioned a second consecutive trip to both the

Commonwealth Conference and ECAC South Tournaments. The Pride hosted an ECAC Tournament game and ended one victory shy of tying the school record. The 2008 season saw Widener close second in the league and host a conference tournament game for just the second time in school his-tory. The year also saw him become the program’s winningest coach with his 35th triumph, a 3-0 victory at Lebanon Valley on October 18. Sheehan enjoyed a solid five-year run at Rutgers-Camden, record-ing a 51-31-10 record from 2000-04. He averaged over 11 wins a season his final three years, including a 12-6-2 mark in 2004 in which his team established school records with 65 goals and 188 points. That group saw one of its players named second team CoSIDA Academic All-America. The 2003 squad was one which made great progress, notching a program-best 13-4-3 record to clinch the school’s first appearance in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament. Rutgers-Camden defeated two ranked schools that season (The College of New Jersey and Richard Stockton). The Lady Raptors in 2002 posted a 10-6-3 mark, advancing to the ECAC Metro Tournament for the program’s first postseason appearance.

Sheehan arrived at RU-Camden following one year at Paul VI High School in Haddonfield, NJ. His 1999 squad won the South Jersey Parochial A championship, closing with a 20-2-2 record. Paul VI was named the Philadelphia Inquirer Team of the Year as well as the Camden Courier Post Cup champions. Sheehan was tabbed Coach of the Year by the Philadelphia Inquirer. Prior to serving as an assistant coach at RU-Camden in 1998, Sheehan’s first collegiate head coaching job took place at Gloucester County College from 1996-97. He guided the 1997 team to the Region 19 Tournament for the first time in school annals. Sheehan also coached Bishop Eustace High School from 1993-95, earning Philadelphia Inquirer honors as Coach of the Year in 1994.

Art Staerk is in his seventh season as an assistant coach with the Pride. No stranger to working with head coach Brian Sheehan, Staerk served four seasons as an assistant at Rutgers-Camden from 2001-04. That included the Lady Raptors first appearances in the ECAC Metro Tournament in 2002 and the New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament in 2003. Staerk since 1996 has served as head coach of the Willingboro Terror, a U-18 girls’ squad. The team has won multiple championships in the South Jersey Soccer League and in 2003 captured the NJ State Cup. He also guided the U-19 Willingboro Nomads boys’ team from 1991-2001, winning nine conference titles over 11 years. Staerk also led the South Jersey Select All-Star U-14 girls’ team in 2002 and coached the NJ ODP girls’ U-16 squad in South Jersey. He holds a national “D” license from the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) and an advanced diploma from the NSCAA.

Sam Baer, coming off a phenomenal career with the Pride, is in her third year as an assistant coach for her alma mater. Baer proved her versatility by being named All-Commonwealth Conference four times at three different positions. She was second team all-league as a defender in 2006, first team all-conference as a forward in 2007 and first team as a midfielder the last two years. Baer also was second team All-Mid Atlantic Region in 2008 and third team in 2009. Named Widener’s Female Athlete of the Year in 2010, Baer graduated first in school history with 40 assists, second with 29 goals and second with 98 points. She graduated in 2010 with a degree in Psychology.

Brittany Balentine is in her first year as an assistant coach for Widener. Balentine enjoyed a stellar career for the Pride at forward, ending fifth in school history with 28 goals, tied for fifth with 19 assists and sixth with 75 points. She was tabbed second team All-Com-monwealth Conference in 2009 after closing fourth in the league with 28 points, third with 11 goals, third with four game-winning goals and tied for sixth with six assists. The two-year captain also is a three-time member of the Middle Atlantic Conference Academic Honor Roll. Balentine graduated Widener with a degree in Physical Therapy.

Rochele Jacobs is in her first year as an assistant coach for the Pride. She will be working primarily with the goalkeepers. Jacobs competed four years in goal, helping Widener reach both the Commonwealth Conference and ECAC Tournaments her first two seasons. Jacobs graduated Widener in 2011 with a degree in Education.

Middle row (L-R): Nicole Repetto, Stephanie Dickinson, Nicole Foschini, Ashley Petrosky, Victoria Batter, Casey Pelican, Karen Thomas, Kaitlyn Taylor, Rebecca Schukraft, Patty Squicciarini. Back row (L-R): Head coach Brian Sheehan, Martha Lowitz, Julia Flower, Kelly Buckley, Valarie Perretti, Vanessa Hejnas, Olivia Pfautz, Alyssa Scala, Olivia Yoh, Jenna Pedrick, assistant coach Art Staerk.

Plenty was accomplished last season for Widener’s women’s soccer team as it continued the march toward its first Commonwealth Con-ference title. The squad returns eight starters and is ready to go in hopes of continuing its charge toward being among one of the region’s elite teams. Every soccer team needs a solid goalkeeper and Widener has that in senior Vanessa Hejnas. A gifted athlete and one who is the quarter-back of the defense, she hopes to finally get some well-overdue all-conference recognition. She closed last season second in the conference in save percentage, second in saves, third in goals against average, third in saves per game and tied for fourth in shutouts. Junior Valarie Perretti, who last season started five matches, is back to provide the squad with a solid backup. Another strength for the Pride is their defense, which last season posted seven shutouts last season and returns many key players. Senior Nicole Repetto has been a great competitor in the back and was one of five for Widener to start all 16 contests last season. Junior Julia Flower has given the Pride two strong years on defense, including eight starts last year, and hopes to be even more of a factor this season. Junior Amanda Doran has been a valuable asset to the defense and has battled through injury to make her mark on the team. Sophomore Stephanie Dickinson came in last year to make an immediate impact and that same presence will be expected this season. Sophomore Kerri Shaw also returns on defense. With Widener losing its top three scorers from last season, many players will be counted on and one is sophomore Jenna Pedrick. She ended tied for third on last year’s squad with five points and looks to continue her strong play. Junior Karen Thomas dealt with injuries last season, but is ready to go this year and hopes to show the same form from her freshman campaign. Senior Patty Squicciarini has been a tremendous player the last three seasons and seeks to continue making an impact on the team at midfield. Junior Kelly Buckley is another midfielder who should give the team a huge lift. She hopes to find the same play from her freshman campaign in which she dished six assists. Junior Victoria Batter scored five goals in 2010 and she too looks for more this year. Senior Daria Porretta along with sophomores Ashley Petrosky and Krista Colarusso also return to help the midfield. Junior Olivia Yoh and senior Alyssa Scala are back to provide offense at forward. Yoh started 10 games and should see that number increase this year. Scala primarily has been one of the first players off the bench, but she easily could see a plethora of starts. Also returning at forward are sophomores Jaclyn Miller and Martha Lowitz. Widener plays its first five games away from home, beginning August 31 at Rowan. The Pride then compete September 7 and 8 at the Scarlet Raider Soccer Classic in Newark, NJ, in hopes of winning this tournament for the second time in three years. League play begins September 29 at Hood and Homecoming is October 6 under the lights against Lycoming. The regular season ends at home October 27 against Elizabethtown. The league’s top five teams compete in the conference tournament from October 29-November 3.
