Young Sabres Look To Build On 2010 Season

Season Preview

The 2011 Marian University Women’s Soccer team begins the season with eleven returning players from the 2010 campaign. The Sabres return four of their five top points leaders and five of their top six scorers from 2010. Also, returning are eight of the teams starters from last season. At forward, the Sabres return senior Hailey Wisner (Sussex, WI) and sophomores Jade Koeune (Winneconne, WI) and Danielle Donnermeyer (La Grange, IL). Koeune was second on the team in goals with eight in 2010. Donnermeyer and Wisner had six and two goals, respectively. Returning in the midfield is All-Conference honoree and starter senior Taylor Hozeska (Hartford, WI). In addition, three more starters return in senior Mollie Tennessen (Kaukauna, WI), sen-ior Kate Koffman (Eden, WI), and sophomore Shayni Paul (Menasha, WI). Hozeska led the team in as-sists with nine helpers. Paul had nine points, Tennessen had five points, and Koffman had two points. At defense, the Sabres return three starters in senior Cailtin Stumpner and sophomores Kelsey Lightfield (Appleton, WI), who was on the Conference All-Freshman team, and Jenny Brandt. These three were part of the stingiest defense in Sabre history allowing only 25 goals all season. In goal, returning for the 2011 season is junior goalie Jordan Dykstra. Marian University 2011 Women’s Soccer Media Guide 2010 in Review

2010 Season Was a Step In The Right Direction

The Marian University Sabres season ended at the hands of Edgewood College in the quarterfinals of the Northern Athletics Conference tournament. After taking the meeting earlier in the season 2-0, the Sabres fell 2-1 to the #3 seed in Madison. Just like during the first meeting, the Sabres took an early lead off a Danielle Donnermeyer goal in the 3’ of the match. However, the Eagles were able to score twice in the 2nd half to avenge the result from the regular season. The Sabres up-and-down season ended with an overall record of 9-8-1 and a NAC record of 7-4-1, which earned them the sixth seed in the conference tournament. In 2010, the Sabres allowed the least amount of goals in school history by conceding only 25 all season. This also puts our goals-against-average as best in school history at 1.36. The Sabres had 14 different players start and everyone saw minutes in at least seven contests. The Sabres also saw three very accomplished seniors end their careers in 2010. Kim Kriese, forward, leaves Marian as the school’s all-time goals and points leader. In addition, she leaves Marian as the Northern Athletics Confer-ence’s all-time points and goals leader. She was named Conference Offen-sive Player of the Year. Tiffany Erdman, goal-keeper, who will graduate with a double major in May 2012, ended her career with a wonderful season. She started all 18 matches in goal and allowed only 22 goals for a 1.47 goals-against-average, which is second best in school history. Mariel Bartolutti, central defender, graduated after a career of anchoring the center of defense and playing for three different head coaches. She was second on the team with seven assists. All three seniors started every match, were great leaders, were All-Conference selections, and will be greatly missed. The Sabres were again honored by the NSCAA with the Team Academic Award, for the work in the classroom. The Sabres had four players on the All-Conference team with Kriese (1st), Bartolutti (2nd), Erdman and Talyor Hozeska (HM). In addition, Kelsey Lightfield was named to the All-Freshman team. Kriese was named to the Co-SIDA/ESPN Academic All-District team and as Marian University’s Female Student Athlete of the Year.
