TO THE MEDIAThe 2010 Mercer University Women’s Soccer Media Guide is intended to provide you with general information about the Mercer women’s soccer team. This information should assist you in your coverage of the team throughout the season.--Should you need additional information or assistance, please contact Sports Information softball contact Jeff Gra-ham, at (478) 301-5209 with any requests.--He can also be reached via e-mail at [email protected] or via fax at (478) 301-5350.

CREDENTIAL REQUESTSThe Sports Information Office will issue credentials to working press only. All credential requests should be made in writing at least 24 hours in advance of the scheduled game.

PRACTICESAs a general rule, all practices are open to the media and the public. There may be instances, however, when all or part of a practice session is closed. Please contact the Sports Infor-mation Office in advance if you plan on attending a practice session so an escort can be made avaliable.

INTERVIEW POLICYMedia interviews of players and coaches are encouraged, and every effort will be made to accommodate media requests. In-person interviews are preferred, but telephone interviews can be arranged through the Mercer Sports Information Of-fice. Under no circumstances will student-athletes’ residence numbers be supplied to the media.

INTERVIEWSAll interviews with Mercer student-athletes should be coor-dinated through the Sports Information Office. Players are generally avaliable for interviews up to 30 minutes prior to the start of practice and directly afterward. Head coach Grant Serafy is generally available in the morning.

POST-GAME INTERVIEWSFollowing a 10-minute “cooling-off” period, coaches and players from both teams will be made available to media members outside each team’s respective dugout. The Sports Information Office will poll the media prior to the end of the game to determine any player requests.

MERCER SPORTS NETWORKMercer University Athletics has announced that it has renewed its contract with Clear Channel Broadcasting Inc. to serve as the flag-ship radio network for the University’s men’s basketball games in 2010-11. The broadcaster’s sister FM stations of Peach 96.5 & 102.5 (WPCH and WZCH ) will serve as the flagship stations for all broad-casts this season.

MU will also broadcast selected Bears’ women’s basketball, baseball and softball games. Plans for the expanded coverage to include those sports are currently being formulated, but have not yet been finalized.

Mercer’s Atlantic Sun Conference games will be among the broad-casts, including the 2011 A-Sun Basketball Championships, to be played once again this year on the Mercer campus at the University Center.

Rick Cameron, “Voice of the Bears” for the past four seasons, will continue to call the play-by-play. Mercer’s senior assistant vice president for marketing communications returned to the broadcast booth in 2006 after originally doing radio play-by- play in the late 1970s.

2010 SEASON PREVIEWFor the 2010 Mercer Bears women’s soccer team the

mission is simple: win and you’re in. With the ultimate goal of making the 2010 NCAA Soccer Championship,

head coach Grant Serafy believes on keeping his philosophy clear and simple – play hard, win the Atlantic Sun Championship and punch your ticket to the big dance.

The Bears began their 2010 march to that goal opening fall practice two weeks ago in preparation for the regular season – a home contest against Georgia Southern on August 22.

Serafy is in his seventh season with the Orange and Black and admits as close as the Bears have come in recent seasons there is still room to improve as he looks to establish the Bears’ program as one of the nation’s elite.

“I think we felt a little disappointment last season,” Serafy said. “We outshot a lot of teams, but just couldn’t get the ball into the back of the net and came up just short in the A-Sun tournament.”

After winning the Atlantic Sun regular season title in 2008, Mercer struggled at times last season, yet were able to finish on a high note losing only one game in its final seven matches. The Bears finished the year 8-6-4 and qualified for their fourth consecutive A-Sun conference tournament – their longest stretch in team history.

“We want our championship back,” Serafy added. “Our motivation is simply to win the Atlantic Sun and qualify for the NCAA tournament. With the talent and experience coming back I think we have a good shot to do that.”

The Bears return 17 letter winners from last year’s team, including ten with significant starting experience. Highlighting the returners are All-Atlantic Sun performers junior Olivia Tucker, senior Kacie Hudson and All-Freshman P.A. Upson.

Losing only three seniors to graduation provides the Bears with a wealth of depth and experience at every position on the field. All top six goal scorers from last season return and of the ten players who scored a goal, nine will be uniform come August 22.

“I am confident in the players we have coming back,” Serafy said. “We will have a lot of experience and throw in the mix of the newcomers and I think we will have a very competitive fall camp at many positions.”

Nine freshmen have made their way to Macon this season and Serafy maintains that all positions are up for grabs going into fall practice hoping to drive competition throughout the preseason. Serafy

“I hope we get to that point where all of our players are fighting and working for their spot on this team,” Serafy said. “Building a competitive nature is just part of what we want to accomplish as a program.”

Another aspect that Serafy has implemented since his time at Mercer has been to retool the types of talent and competition he schedules from year-to-year. To achieve that national exposure the Bears have squared off in recent seasons against some of the top programs in the nation including conferences like the SEC and ACC. That has not changed this season as the Bears will see some terrific

teams including Florida State and Georgia.

“The goal behind playing top notch programs is to set up ourselves up the best we can for conference play,” Serafy said. “It will be a great test for our team and will better prepare us for what we hope to accomplish this season.”

Mercer will host the preseason No. 6 ranked Seminoles and Georgia on Labor Day Weekend at Bear Field. Among the Bear other non-conference foes include: Colonial Conference

member Georgia State on Sept. 3, Xavier of the Atlantic-10 Conference and Mountain West Conference member Air Force.

Among the other new additions to Serafy’s program are two welcomed assistant coaches in Jason Russell and Peter Davis. Russell brings in a wealth of coaching and professional playing experience and will run a majority of the recruiting responsibilities and Davis will have an immediate impact with the goalkeepers after graduating from USC-Upstate in 2009.

Russell played professionally with a number of different organizations including the Milwaukee Wave of the National Professional Soccer League. He also had stints with teams in the United Soccer League and most recently has served as the head coach of the girls U-10 and U-14 Tophat Soccer Club in Atlanta.

mixture of experience and young talent at the forward position in 2010. Senior Lauren Johnson and juniors Emily Milone and Emerald Phillips return and two highly regarded freshmen are expected to make a push for playing time throughout the year. Johnson and Phillips tied for second on the team with four goals apiece last season and provide a dose of leadership at the forward position.

Casey Barrett and Nadja Kolliesuah, both from Ohio and teammates on the Ohio Club Premier Eagles club team are quick on the ball and Serafy said both have a great shot at seeing the field this year.

“Nadja and Casey both look sharp,” Serafy said. “They have come in ready to compete and could see some significant playing time this year. We have a good mix of talent up-front with our returners and the freshmen so we are expecting a lot from them this season.”

Midfielders – A strong suit for the Bears last fall were a number of highly capable players at the midfield position. First Team All Atlantic Sun player Olivia Tucker begins her junior campaign as the Bears leading scorer the past two seasons. Tucker scored 8 times and had two assists moving her career totals to 18 goals and four assists – tying her for eighth place all-time in goals.

Senior Kaelyn Horton returns to her defensive midfield position where she has started every game of her career - a stretch of some 58 games. Junior Ali Meek was named to the A-Sun All Freshmen Team a year ago and provides an offensive threat from the midfield as she recorded two goals and three assists last season. However, she is recovering from off-season ACL surgery and hopes to make it back sometime this season.

Senior Sara Elliot assumed a starting role last season

and made good on the opportunity by being named an A-Sun Second Teamer. She netted four goals and two assists splitting time as a forward and will again look to be a major contributor this season. Serafy noted that sophomore Danielle Hesse and four freshmen add depth to the position and expects several of them to see the field in 2010.

Defense – The Bears pride themselves in maintaining one of the more dominant defenses in the A-Sun the past several years and it will be no different in 2010. All four of the Bears starters from last season return in seniors Kacie Hudson, Raschelle Riley, Lizzy Shaughnessy and sophomore P.A. Upson.

Hudson leads the talented group of defenders and is a three-time All A-Sun player and Upson was named to the All-Freshmen team a season ago. A deeper look at the stats proved that Bears defense made up a large difference as Mercer had the league’s lowest save percentage and yet had the third best goals against in the A-Sun.

Juniors Kate Alderman, Jessie Kupstas, and Vanessa Breslin will work in nicely in the backfield as well. Freshmen Nicole Young, whose brother Ryan plays for the men’s team, and Kristen Hagaman will compete and gain experience in the first year.

Goalkeepers – The graduation of three-year starter Jean Worts has left a huge hole in net this year, yet Serafy said he has three highly capable keepers on the 2010 roster that will compete hard for the starting role come August 22. Juniors Cagney Valloch and Cristina Guilarte have over twenty games in goal seeing plenty of time in a backup role the past two seasons and freshman Nikki Atkinson comes highly recruited out of McIntosh High School in Peachtree City, Ga.

Grant Serafy enters his seventh season at the helm of the Bears. In 2009, the Mercer women’s soccer program sustained their longest successful run in Atlantic Sun Conference play under Serafy, having put together three consecutive winning campaigns and qualifying for the conference tournament in each of the last four seasons. In fact, the 31 wins over the past three seasons are the most ever for a Mercer squad in the program’s 26-year history.

Serafy led the Bear s to their first-ever NSCAA Regional Ranking in 2009 – distinguishing the team amongst other

Division I programs in the southeast including the ACC and SEC.

Last season Serafy became the program’s all-time leader in games coached with 113 matches to his credit with the Orange and Black. He is only the second coach in Mercer history to reach the 100-game plateau and will be the longest tenured women’s soccer head coach at Mercer in 2010. (7th season)He is also the program’s all-time leader in total wins with 49.

In 2008, he led Mercer to the A-Sun regular season conference title, the first in the program’s history. He became the first coach in Atlantic Sun history to win back-to-back Coach of the Year awards and saw five of his players make either first or second team All A-Sun and two others place on the All-Freshman squad. Senior Heather Manting was named A-Sun Defensive Player of the Year. The 2008 squad tied for most overall season victories (11) in school history, yielded only 10 goals, four in conference play, and played in the A-Sun Tournament championship game, losing a heartbreaker to Kennesaw State, 2-1. Under his tutelage, Mercer has experienced new levels of success. The 2008 team set records including most conference wins (9) in a season, tied for the most overall victories (11) with the 1991 squad, and became the first Mercer women’s soccer team to win an A-Sun tournament match. They also advanced to the A-Sun Championship final. A breakthrough campaign for Serafy and the Bears came in 2006 as Mercer notched a pair of feats that had not been achieved since 1998. Among the accomplishments, Mercer reached the Atlantic Sun Tournament and finished with a winning conference record. The Bears also had a player earn first-team all-conference honors for the first time since 2001. Perhaps more important than the team’s results, Serafy has brought in high-caliber players. His hard work on the recruiting trail has revitalized the program as Mercer’s 2005 and 2008 recruiting classes were ranked first in the conference by Soccer Buzz and earned regional recognition. Serafy’s 2006 class was ranked second in the Atlantic Sun by Soccer Buzz. Not only has Serafy had success on the recruiting trail, but those recruits have turned in all-conference performances. An unprecedented 12 players have been named All-Conference selections in Serafy’s seven years in Macon. Catie Marshalek was named to the 2004 Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team, leading the team in points and goals. Meghan Castaldo followed in Marshalek’s footsteps and led the squad in points, goals and assists while earning A-Sun All-Freshman honors in 2005 along with defender Heather Manting. Castaldo’s play in 2006 earned her a spot on the All-Atlantic Sun First Team while defender Erin Theobald and goalkeeper Jean Worts were named to the 2006 A-Sun All-Freshman squad. In 2007, Kacie Hudson became the first Mercer women’s soccer player to earn both First-Team All-Conference and All-Freshman recognition after leading the team in goals and points. That theme continued in 2008. Current junior, Olivia Tucker was named the A-Sun Freshman of the Year after leading

Mercer in goals scored, points and shots. She ranked in the top 10 in seven conference categories. Manting finished her distinguished career the A-Sun Defensive Player of the Year. Last season in 2009, Serafy helped guide the most players ever (4)to all-conference teams including first-teamer Olivia Tucker, second-teamers Kacie Hudson and Sara Elliot and all-freshman performer Patricia-Anne Upson. Serafy also emphasizes excellence in the classroom, where 75 players have earned Atlantic Sun All-Academic team honors since his first season, including an amazing 23 selections in 2007. Additionally, Courtney Maxey earned a spot on the 2006 NSCAA/adidas College Women Scholar All-South Region Honorable Mention Team, was a finalist for the 2007 Georgia Sportswoman of the Year Award, and was named the 2008 Atlantic Sun Female Student-Athlete of the Year. As a team, the Bears have received the NSCAA Tea m Academic Award five years under Serafy and eight times in the past nine seasons. “We seek student-athletes who are talented soccer players, that are strong academically and demonstrate effort in the classroom, and that have good character,” said Serafy. “Those are also the qualities we try to emphasize while our players attend Mercer. We want them to have the best four years of Division I soccer they can have, we want them to graduate in four years with a solid GPA with the degree of their choice, and we want their character to have developed further.” The fifth women’s soccer coach in the program’s history, Serafy came to Mercer on March 17, 2004, after spending the previous 16 years at Stratford Academy in Macon where he developed both the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams into dominant forces, winning a total of 16 state championships. After taking over the Stratford boys’ soccer program in 1988, Serafy quickly built the program into a GISA power, guiding the Eagles to a third-place finish in 1989, their highest finish ever in the state playoffs. The Eagles followed up on their success the next season as Serafy guided Stratford to its first state championship. The Eagles would be no stranger to success for the remainder of Serafy’s tenure. Stratford went on to win six more boys’ state championships under Serafy’s leadership and he would finish with an overall boys’ record of 215- 64-13. Serafy’s stay at Stratford was the beginning of one of the most dominant girls’ soccer teams in the state. In that first season, the girls’ team went 10-5-1. Success for the girls’ program continued as the Eagles continued to win state championships throughout the ‘90s. In 1996, Stratford received its first national ranking, coming in 17th in the Umbro/NSCAA girls’ high school Top 20 poll. The 2000 squad was ranked 25th in the Fab-50 rankings by Student Sports Magazine. The undefeated 2002 squad was ranked 17th by that same publication. Serafy’s nine years of guiding the girls’ soccer program at Stratford resulted in nine consecutive state championships and an overall record of 153-14-4. Serafy holds a class “A” license from the United States Soccer Federation and a Premier Diploma from the NSCAA, the two highest forms of coaching credentials in the country. He has been a staff coach for the Georgia State Soccer Association and a coach for the Georgia Olympic Development Program. Originally from Atlanta, Serafy starred at the Westminster Schools, playing on two state championship teams before playing at Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y., for two seasons. He completed his collegiate career at Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C., where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in physical education. Serafy earned a master’s degree in sport management from Springfield College in Massachusetts and served as a graduate assistant for the men’s program. He is single and resides in Macon.

Jason Russell will join head coach Grant Serafy’s coaching staff in the fall of 2010 as an assistant and will serve as the team’s recruiting coordinator among other on the field responsibili-ties. Russell comes to the Bears’ program while serving as the head coach of the storied Tophat Soccer Club in Atlanta, Ga. where he guided the U-10 and U-14 girls programs since 2006.

Russell has been coaching since 1995 at numerous youth levels across the U.S. including head coach positions with the

Milwaukee Rampage Soccer Club in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and the Richmond Kickers Soccer Club in Richmond, Virginia. He has also served as a youth academy director and been an instructor in a number of clinics in the past 10 years. Russell holds a National “D” coaching license from the USSF and with strong ties in the state of Georgia will provide a wealth of knowledge serving as the team’s recruiting coordinator.

During that time Russell also maintained a position on a number of professional soccer clubs in the United Soccer League and National Professional Soccer League. From 1999-2001 he played with the Milwaukee Wave and was apart two NPSL Championship teams with the Wave. He also played for the Richmond Kickers, Milwaukee Rampage and New Orleans Storm of the UPL A-League.

Russell also had a prolific collegiate career at Georgia Southern, helping the program gain national recognition as a play-er before graduating with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 2004. While in Statesboro, Russell notched 30 goals and 30 assists in his career and remains as the Eagles second all-time points leader. Georgia Southern was ranked as high as No. 13 his junior season.

Peter Davis joins the Mercer coaching staff in the fall of 2010 as a graduate assistant. Davis comes to the Orange and Black by way of Pfeiffer University where he served as an assistant and goalkeeper’s coach for the men’s team in 2009. At Pfeiffer, Davis helped guide the team to their best record in program history and aided in two all conference honors for both the men’s and women’s goalkeepers.

Davis played two seasons in goal at fellow A-Sun member USC Upstate after transferring from Spartanburg Method-ist College (junior college). He was named a captain for his team’s in three of his four years as a player. Davis also holds several coaching licenses through the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and was heavily involved in the North Carolina Olympic Development Program. His responsibilities will include coaching and mentoring the goalkeep-ers and serves as the team’s coordinator of community and alumni relations.

Jesse Kolodziejski enters his first season as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Mercer University. Kolodziejski will work primarily with the women’s soccer team at Mer-cer while providing support at all home events.

Kolodziejski comes to Mercer after graduating from Salis-bury University with a B.S. in Athletic Training in May 2010. While at Salisbury, Kolodziejski worked with a variety of sports including men’s soccer, women’s basketball, foot-ball and women’s lacrosse.

During his senior year at Salisbury, Kolodziejski completed an internship at nearby John’s Hopkins University working with the baseball team who was ranked as high as num-ber one in all of Division III.

A native of Baltimore, Md., Kolodziejski is a National Ath-letic Trainers Association member and is BOC certified. He will be pursuing a master’s degree in education while a Mercer.

Paul Bohr was hired as the first full-time strength and conditioning coach in 2007. Bohr came to the Bears after spending the previous two years as an assistant strength coach at the College of Charleston.

While at C of C, Bohr designed and implemented strength and conditioning programs, along with speed programs for men’s basketball, volleyball, softball, men’s soccer, golf, cross country, track & field, swimming and equestrian.

The Winter Park, Fla., native began his collegiate career as an assistant strength coach at UC Riverside in August 2004 prior to joining the UCLA athletics program in Janu-ary 2005. While at UCLA, Bohr worked with the Bruins’ football program assisting with speed development while also teaching and monitoring exercise techniques and developing weight management and nutrition training for student-athletes. Bohr is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS). He is also a member of the International Sports Science Association (ISSA) and is a Certified Fitness Trainer (CFT), Specialist in Sports Conditioning (SSC) and a Certified Sports Perfor-mance Nutritionist (SPN). He also is a certified member USA Weightlifting (USAW) as a Level 1 Club Coach.

Paul has been coaching and working with athletes since 1993, designing fitness and speed development pro-grams. Paul worked with numerous professional athletes from teams such as the Miami Dolphins and Orlando Magic.

A 1989 graduate from UCF with a bachelor’s of business administration, Bohr later received his master’s degree in physical education from Cal State – Dominguez Hills.

The University is comprised of the College of Liberal Arts, the Walter F. George School of Law, the School of Phar-macy and Health Services, the School of Medicine, the Eugene W. Stetson School of Business and Economics,

the School of Engineering, the James and Carolyn McAfee School of Theology, the Tift College of Education, the Georgia Baptist Col-lege of Nursing, the College of Continuing and Professional Studies, and the Townsend School of Music. The University also operates the Mercer University Press in Macon and the Mercer Engineering Research Center in Warner Robins.

Mercer’s enrollment is nearly 8,100 students. While many students come from the Southeast, more than 38 states and 30 countries are represented among the student body. The average class size at Mercer is 21, with a student/faculty ratio of 13:1 - unusually low for a major university.

The benefits of campus living are numerous - the development of life-long friendships, a sense of community, enhanc-ing campus involvement and higher academic performance. For many new students, this is the first time they have lived away from home, and the community that develops on campus and in residence halls becomes a second family.

All freshman and sophomores (first-year and/or transfer students) are required to live on campus, with the exception of married students, students above the age of 21, students with children and/or students who live at home with a parent or guardian within reasonable commuting distance. In each of Mercer’s residence halls, safety comes first and foremost. The exterior doors are locked at all times, and students use their identification cards to gain ac-cess into their residence hall.

Macon, Georgia is the host of the annual International Cherry Blossom Fes-tival, a 10-day event commemorating the beautiful Yoshino cherry trees that bring color to the Macon landscape each spring. Macon boasts more Yoshino cherry trees than even Washington, D.C. The annual festival features special performances and activities and draws thousands of people from literally all over the world. Through the revitalization of Macon’s historic downtown area, local business owners host events like Taste of Downtown, where downtown food vendors - from gourmet to down-home cooking - display their specialties and First Friday, where businesses unite to bring suburban residents into downtown for a night of fun, food and entertainment. The Georgia Music Hall of Fame is home to memorabilia and informa-tion on all the recording art-ists from Georgia, including R.E.M., the Black Crowes, James Brown, Otis Redding, Travis Tritt and many more.

Macon, Ga. is also home to Mercer’s Law School. The Walter F. George

School of Law, founded in 1873, is one of the oldest law schools in the

country. Named for Walter F. George, a 1901 graduate of Mercer’s law school who went on to become a justice of the Georgia State Su-

preme Court and later a U.S. Sena-tor, the law school has a rich and

distinguished history.

The Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, the state’s official sports museum, fea-tures exhibits, interactive fun areas and information about professional and amateur Georgia athletes, such as Hank Aaron and Bobby Jones. The Grand Opera House is a historic landmark theatre operated by Mercer University. It presents a wide variety of national touring Broadway shows, plays and concerts. Mercer University’s theatre and music departments also hold many of their productions in this beautiful theatre. From fine dining to fast food ... from elegant shops to outlet malls ... from classical to country music concerts, in Macon, Georgia, there is always some place to go and something to do.

GEORGIA SPORTS HALL OF FAME

Located in Macon, Georgia, the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame is the country’s largest state sports muse-um at 43,000 square feet. Created in 1956 as the Georgia Prep Sports Hall of Fame, the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame has been in existence for more than 50 years. It was ex-panded in 1963 to encompass prep, college, amateur and professional sports. In 1999, it moved into a per-manent new home in Macon.

GEORGIA MUSICHALL OF FAME

The Georgia Music Hall of Fame, located in downtown Macon, Georgia, preserves and interprets the state’s rich musical heritage through programs of collection, exhibition, education and performance. The museum fosters an appreciation for Georgia music and stimulates economic growth through a variety of dynamic partnerships and initiatives statewide.

The University Center houses all 15 of Mercer’s NCAA Division I ath-letics offices, training rooms and team rooms. Opened in 2004, it is a state-of-the-art facility that can hold up 3,200 spectators for basketball and volleyball.

UNIVERSITY CENTERMercer broke ground on the centerpiece of the Macon campus in the fall of 2001. The

University Center has become one of the premier venues in the nation for college bas-ketball and volleyball. The $40 million facility has become the focal point for almost all

campus activities, providing students with an area for study, a food court, and a coffee shop.

The “Street” is a tree-lined, sunlit indoor patio, providing students with an area to study, so-cialize, and dine on cuisine from the food court, including Chic Fil-A, Subway, Burger Studio, and Sushi Hot Bowls. Bear Rock Cafe is a coffee shop and internet café for students to use either with high-speed connections throughout the floor area with the wireless internet connections, or with Bear Rock’s computers. Students can also relax and watch either of two flat screen televisions, or relax outside on the Patio overlooking the Greek Village and campus.

Both students and athletes have state of the art fitness facilities, with weight train-ing equipment and cardiovascular theater, as well as a 1/8 mile indoor track. The track overlooks the lower level, which has three full-size basketball and volleyball courts for intramural and recreation use.

Another distinguishing feature of the University Center is the 25-meter indoor swim-ming pool for use by both students and teams for lap swim and water strength and speed drills. Athletes have a separate weight room for use during team workouts with

Mercer’s comprehensive therapeutic setting provides medical coverage for all student-athletes. It is staffed by

two full-time athletic trainers and five graduate assistants that are licensed and certified to practice.

The University Center is also home for Mercer University Athletics, with offices for all the athletics administra-tion and coaching staff. These offices allow potential student-athletes to see first hand the facility that will be their home base for their career at Mercer.

The University Center, on top of all the other amenities, is the home for Mercer basketball and volleyball. There are two full courts, one designated as the practice court, and the main floor in the center of the arena in the University Center. The main court is surrounded by 3,200 seats for basketball and volleyball, but can be ex-panded for up to 4,080 with floor seating for concerts. Three skyboxes at mid-court provide a birds-eye view of the action on the floor.

The main entrance into the Arena at the University Center is Mercer’s Heritage Hall. This is a collection recogniz-ing some of Mercer’s most important alumni, faculty and staff. Another state-of-the-art addition to Mercer, the weight room is home to power lifting stations, abundant free weights and state-of-the art cardio equipment.

The Bears sports also have an up-to-date locker room in the University Center. The locker rooms were developed with full showers, bathrooms and personal lockers for each player.

The indoor pool at the University Center is a collegiate size lap pool that is utilized for aqua-therapy for rehabilitation of student-athletes.

WILLIAM D. UNDERWOODPresident Underwood has led Mercer during a period of dynamic growth and develop-ment for the University. Since his arrival as Mercer’s 18th President in 2006, enrollment has increased by 18 percent to more than 8,200 students. Mercer has launched a second medical school campus (in Savannah), initiated a mas-ter’s-level physician assistant program and a doctoral-level

program in physical therapy and added Ph.D. programs in Educational Leadership, Curriculum and Instruction, and Nursing.

Reflecting an increased emphasis on research, Mercer in 2009-10 met the criteria established by the Carnegie Foundation for reclassification as a research-doctoral university. Over the past three years, the number of Ph.D. students has increased from fewer than 25 to approximately 200, while the amount of externally funded research expenditures has grown to nearly $25 million. In addition to increased levels of funding from the National Institutes of Health and the National Sci-ence Foundation, Mercer scientists have for the first time been funded as eminent cancer scientists by the Georgia Cancer Coalition, while other Mercer scientists are now receiving funding to support their research through the Georgia Research Alliance.

ment to service-learning and community engagement under President Underwood’s leadership. During the spring of 2009, Mercer announced a $5 million grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to sup-port continued revitalization of the College Hill Corridor between campus and downtown Macon. The ground-breaking Mercer On Mission program, launched in 2007, has been recognized by the Clinton Global Initiative as “an exemplary approach to addressing a specific global challenge.” Mercer earned the highest federal recogni-tion for community engagement by the Corporation for National and Community Service in 2009, and in 2008 became the only university in Georgia to receive the Carnegie Foundation’s designation for “Curricular En-gagement and Outreach and Partnerships.”

Prior to joining Mercer, President Underwood served at Baylor University as Interim President and held the pres-tigious Leon Jaworski Chair at the Baylor School of Law. President Underwood is an accomplished educator and scholar. He was designated a Master Teacher at Baylor in recognition of extraordinary classroom teaching over an

extended period. He is an elected mem-ber of the American Law Institute and the American Bar Foundation.

President Underwood was awarded the J.D. degree summa cum laude by the University of Illinois College of Law in 1985, where he graduated as class salutatorian and was an editor of the University of Illinois Law Review. Following graduation, he clerked for the Honorable Sam D. Johnson of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, prior to practicing law for several years with a large law firm in Dallas. He also holds an undergraduate degree from Oklahoma Baptist University, where he met his spouse, Lesli. They have two children, Jessica and William.

DIRECTOR OFATHLETICS

JIM COLEJim Cole assumed the duties of Director of Athletics for Mercer University on July 1, 2010. Prior to that, he served as MU’s Senior Associate Director of Athletics for External Affairs, heading up the Mercer Athletics Foundation (the fund-raising arm for Bears’ athlet-ics) concurrent with his time as a State Representative in Georgia.

A native of Augusta, Cole en-tered Mercer on an academic scholarship in 1990 and lettered

in baseball from 1990 to 1993. He was recipient of the Charles C. Morgan Outstanding Student-Athlete Award and gradu-ated with honors from the University in 1993.

Cole was drafted as a pitcher by the Milwaukee Brewers in 1993 and was named the franchise’s “Organizational Player of the Year” and a finalist for the TOPPS Minor League “Player of the Year Award” in 1994.

After an injury ended his professional baseball career, he returned to Mercer in 1997 to earn his MBA while serving as a graduate assistant and pitching coach for the baseball team. In 1998 he served as pitching coach for the Madison Black Wolves minor league team in Madison, Wis. Cole then entered private business before being elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 2004 (and serving in that capac-ity until 2010).

Cole served as the legislative voice under the Gold Dome for the constituents of House District 125 - which includes Jasper County and parts of Monroe, Jones and Lamar Counties. His legislative duties included membership on the Appropria-tions Economic Development Sub-Committee (to oversees

important areas of the budget that deal with agriculture, community affairs, economic development and transporta-tion). In addition, Cole served on the Rules, Judiciary Non-Civil and State Planning and Community Affairs Committees.

Gov. Sonny Perdue appointed Cole to serve as senior admin-istration floor leader in early 2009, having served formerly as assistant floor leader from 2007-2008.

Cole is an active community leader throughout the state. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Georgia Chamber of Commerce. A graduate of Leadership Georgia, he is a member of Forsyth United Methodist Church.

Cole is married to the former Gaylyn Lawson of Forsyth, where they live with their two children, Caroline and Lawson..

The Mercer Athletics Foundation was created in 2007 as the fundrais-ing arm for Mercer University Athletics. Members of the Foundation annually set goals to raise funds which have been used to undertake such projects as hiring a full-time strength and conditioning coach, enhancing recruiting budgets, providing additional scholarships and to help increase salaries to attract and retain outstanding coaches.

Strength and ConditioningThe strength and conditioning program at Mercer has three primary goals. These goals are to maximize athleticism, minimize injuries and increase mental/physical toughness. The way this is accomplished is by primarily utilizing ground based, multi-joint, triple extension, explosive exercises. Athletes will perform exercises of all types but focus is put on three main exercise styles: Olympic lifting, power lifting and plyometrics. The goal is to try and replicate the movements, velocities and forces that are experienced during competition of the athlete's sport.

Served by a professional full-time strength and conditioning coach as well as an assistant coach, Mercer Athletics provides a full range of weight training and exercise equipment to assist Mercer’s approximately 226 student-athletes in reaching their athletic potential through strength training and conditioning.

Easily accessible from anywhere in the University Center, the equipment includes the following:• three top of the line power lift full racks• over 3,000 pounds of plates • a line of variable resistant machines• three sets of Iron Grip dumbbells • five free standing adjustable benches

Sports Medicine DepartmentThe Mission of the Sports Medicine Department is to provide quality comprehensive healthcare to student-athletes. The health and well-being of student-athletes is the number one priority. Student-athletes have access to therapeutic services such as ultrasound, electrical stimulation, hydrotherapy, rehabilitation, nutritional counseling and preventative physical medicine.

The Mercer Sports Medicine department utilizes a state-of-the-art athletic training facility in the university center. The athletic training room consists of a treatment, taping and rehabilitation area. The rehabilitation area is equipped with a treadmill, exercise bikes in addition to a variety of weights, resistance bands, medicine balls, and other rehabilitation equipment which can be used to facilitate injury rehabilitations.

The athletic training area also has an enclosed hydrotherapy room with an eight-person cold whirlpool and smaller extremity whirlpools. There are also offices for the staff and a physician exam room. The athletic training room also has easy access to the weight room and the University Center pool.

The facility is staffed by two full-time certified athletic trainers and six graduate assistant certified athletic trainers, a family practice physician and an orthopedic surgeon. The staff works with other group of health-care providers to bring a comprehensive care to the student-athletes and acts as a liaison with nutritionists, dentist, cardiologists, and many other specialists.

BUILDINGContinuing a tradition of academic achievement, a record 60 percent of all student-athletes earned All-Academic status during the 2009-10 academic year. Lipscomb edged out Belmont, the seven-time winner of the All-Academic Trophy, to win its first such trophy with close to 72 percent of its the student-athletes achieving All-Academic status with grade point averages of a 3.00, or better.

Several Bisons teams received national recognition for their success in the classroom. Both the men’s and women’s track & field teams posted team GPAs among the top five in the nation - the only school in the country to boast that distinction. Jacksonville’s women’s track team received their ninth straight USTFCCCA All-Academic honor. Lipscomb’s women’s basketball team posted the ninth best GPA in the country and the conference champion volleyball team led five A-Sun schools in receiving an AVCA Team Academic Award. The Stetson men’s tennis team led the nation with nine student-athletes earning the honor of Scholar Athlete from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. A total of five A-Sun schools and 24 student-athletes received recogntion from the ITA. Stetson and Belmont joined only 16 other Division I schools considered an All-Academic squad in both men’s and women’s tennis.

For the first time the NCAA released single-year APR for Division I head coaches in six sports dating back to 2003-04, the beginning of the program. All 11 A-Sun schools produced a coach who had a year of a perfect score of 1000 and the league produced a total of 25 seasons with scores of 1000. Seven of the conference’s men’s and women’s basketball recorded at least one score of 1000 and five teams had a score of 1000 in 2008-09, the most recent year recorded by the NCAA.

WINNERSFour A-Sun teams received Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association All-Sports Trophies in recognition of their performances in NCAA postseason play. Lipscomb’s softball team, ETSU’s men’s tennis squad plus UNF’s men’s golf team and women’s tennis carried the conference to the third-highest total by any one conference.

Golf continued to boom in the conference as three league members on the women’s side advanced to NCAA play for the first time in conference play. Women’s golf became the first sport in the conference to produce three NCAA participants since baseball in 2003. At the NCAA Regionals, ETSU’s Nina Muehl opened with an 8-under 64, the single lowest round carded in all of Division I golf and became just the second golfer from the A-Sun to earn a spot in the NCAA Championships

The Ospreys’ men’s golf team spent the year ranked among the top programs in the country alongside ETSU. Both advanced to NCAA postseason play and the Ospreys made the nationals for the first time as a conference member. Sophomore Sean Dale earned All-America honors and qualified for the US Amateur, as did his teammates Kevin Alywin and Kevin Phelan. Phelan opened his summer by qualifying for the US Open at Pebble Beach. ETSU’s Rhys Enoch tied for the individual title at the NCAA East Regional and his play carried into summer as he made his second Palmer Cup team and advanced all the way to the quarterfinals of the British Amateur.

Individual performances stood out on the diamond as FGCU’s Chris Sale became a consensus All-America en route to becoming the conference’s fourth first-round pick in the last two years. ETSU’s Paul Hoilman contended for the national triple crown and burst onto the national scene by winning the first-ever home run derby competition - contested at historic Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb. Mercer’s Jacob Tanis finished one RBI shy of the national lead in pacing the Bears back to the top of the A-Sun for the first time in more than 25 years.

In softball, two hurlers established themselves among the best in the nation. Lipscomb’s Whitney Kiihnl and USC Upstate’s Morgan Childers each topped the 30-win mark - a first for the conference. The two traded the national lead in ERA throughout the season and when the year came to a close, Kiihnl finished with the best mark in the nation with Childers taking a close second. Kiihnl and Childers ranked second and third in the country in fewest hits allowed per seven innings.

For the first time in league history, the conference’s last remaining charter member, Mercer, hosted the General Shale Brick Basketball Championships. The hosts advanced to the final of the men’s event setting up a standing-room-only event at the University Center against ETSU. In the end the Buccaneers won back-to-back titles. Jacksonville advanced to the NIT for the straight second year and provided the league’s first win in the event since 1996 when Ben Smith connected on a game-winning 3-pointer in the final seconds to stun top-seeded Arizona State.

On the women’s side ETSU became the third A-Sun school to win three straight titles, FGCU advanced to the WNIT for a third consecutive year and USC Upstate registered its first 20-win season as a Division I program.

FOR LIFEAlums from the Atlantic Sun, both recent and historic continued to excel at the highest levels. Within the span of three days, FGCU produced its first two major league baseball players. Two pitchers of the Eagles’ 2008 A-Sun Championship squad, Casey Coleman and Sale, took their talents to Chicago as Coleman broke in with the Cubs and Sale soared through the White Sox system after spending less than two months in the minors. In late June, former Stetson All-American Chris Johnson returned to the Astros lineup and hit over .380 his first two months as a regular.
